H
ow much time do you spend choosing a new surfboard? Do you ponder it for weeks, poring over online reviews, weighing up the pros and cons of tail shapes, rocker, concave and dimensions? Do you spend hours debating whether a performance shape is going to cost you more in wave count than you’ll gain in ability? How about the amount of time you spend on the internet, keeping an eye on the surf forecast; watching the charts, calculating whether the direction of the swell, its height and the prevailing winds are going to combine to light up your favourite surf spot next weekend? Time is important in surfing. In cold water, it becomes even more important. The right wetsuit can keep you warm enough to surf until your arms turn to jelly; but the wrong wetsuit could cost you the session of the season. Wetsuit technology has come a long way in recent years, advances in materials and construction have helped surfers to explore more inhospitable waves than ever, creeping further into the Arctic Circle to find surf. The two key words in the wetsuit game are Warmth and Flexibility. A super flexible suit is great for competition surfers, but not for endurance; and an endurance suit might prove too restrictive for every day surfing. A good cold-water surfer’s wetsuit has to feel like a second layer of skin; it has to flex in the same places your body does but at the same time keep you insulated. You’ll want it to last more than a season, so work out how much you want to spend on a suit based on how much you want to be in the water this winter.
