Our Vision
Waverley Care’s vision is that everyone affected by HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis C in Scotland should receive the highest standards of care and support to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Our Mission Our mission is to make a significant and meaningful difference to the lives of people affected by HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis C. We do this through the provision of high quality supportive services, and by campaigning for excellence in blood borne virus treatment and care, and for an end to stigma and discrimination surrounding these conditions.

About Waverley Care Waverley Care is Scotland’s leading charity providing care and support to people living with HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis C and to their families, carers and children. Established in 1989 the support offered by the charity has helped thousands of people cope with the practical and emotional challenges that an HIV diagnosis brings with it. Over the years our services have expanded to help people affected by Hepatitis C and have most recently focused on providing specialist support to groups already discriminated against by society such as Africans, gay men and drug users; individuals who, once diagnosed with HIV, face double discrimination.

Introduction One of the advantages of producing an annual review is that it helps to focus on just how much happens during the course of a year. New services, reaffirming African links, completing the review of our future strategy, increased numbers of volunteers, and some famous faces helping with our fundraising, certainly made it a busy year for Waverley Care. More details of our work over the past year are summarised in the following pages. The coming year will continue to see challenges as council funding is squeezed, services are stretched and rates of HIV infection remain high. Waverley Care will continue to work with all our partners to ensure that our HIV services offer quality information, care and support. We would like to thank all of Waverley Care’s Trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters for their hard work and dedication to making a real difference to the lives of people living with HIV in Scotland.

2007/08 Highlights and Achievements
New Services We were delighted to receive BBC Children in Need funding this year for a new post within our children and families service. The new work is with young people in Scotland who are themselves living with HIV. The positive response from paediatricians has been overwhelming. In response to the rising level of HIV infection amongst gay men and the lack of support services available to them, we extended our gay men’s work, including peer support. Through sharing experiences and discussing issues such as disclosure there have been real benefits for the men who have used the service to build self confidence and optimism. We have already seen service users going back to work, improving personal relationships with friends and family and living healthier lifestyles. Finally in terms of new services, we extended the reach of our African work to cover NHS Lanarkshire. This fitted perfectly with part of our future strategy which is to extend the reach of our services to support more people across Scotland.

African Links We strongly reaffirmed our links with Africa this year. Martha Baillie, our Senior Manager - Community Projects, visited Zambia in August to help a women’s project there to develop capacity. Her trip also allowed her to learn new techniques for working with people from African communities living in Scotland. Her visit was filmed as part of the BBC’s Songs of Praise programme. In June we were visited by 3 staff from Malawi’s largest voluntary sector HIV agency MANASO. The trip was organised by Interact Worldwide. The quality of our African work was recognised in March when we won the Best Practice in Empowering African Communities award at the bi-annual African HIV Policy Network awards. At an evening dominated by individual awards we were the only organisation to receive recognition. Immigration is a key issue within our work with Africans and HIV and Human Rights was the subject of a seminar we organised in Glasgow in October. It sparked such interest that it became the topic of a BBC Radio Scotland documentary.

Crusaid Hardship Fund for Scotland This year saw us take over the administration of the Crusaid Hardship Fund for Scotland and, with Crusaid and colleagues from HIV Scotland, we published the first ever report on ‘HIV and Poverty in Scotland’. Launched by Sarah Boyack MSP in the Scottish Parliament, the report graphically illustrates the realities of living with HIV for many people – the stigma and discrimination surrounding the illness, the loss of opportunities and the very real financial poverty experienced by some people.

Fundraising The fundraising team had an exciting year of events and activities. In the eleventh year of our award winning come and sing events. Rupert Forbes, Bob Chilcott and Stephen Doughty all kindly conducted concerts and workshops with a wide range of music. Thanks to them and to our wonderfully loyal band of singers. The summer saw our usual success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with our bucket shakers out in force and benefit events taking place including the Pleasance Tartan Ribbon Comedy Benefit, Off the Kerb Comedy Gala and Loud and Proud concert. Following our longstanding relationship with the Pleasance, we said thank you by presenting the Tartan Ribbon Award to Christopher Richardson and Anthony Alderson at the Arts and Business Scotland Awards. Our major event of the year was our World AIDS Day Ball on 1st December which raised £34,000. We’re particularly grateful to our main sponsors Joseph Bonnar Jewellers, Harvey Nichols and Plaisir du Chocolat. We are always delighted by the ongoing support of our patrons and this year have additionally enjoyed support from a number of other well-known individuals including Ian Rankin, Frank Skinner, and Alan Carr.
