The auspicious evening was graced with the presence of YAB Tun Dato’ Musa Hitam who is the Patron of IMSHA as well as Datuk Ismail Ibrahim, Chief Executive of Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).

To identify winners, Frost & Sullivan created a research methodology that includes not only desk research, but input from the community as well. Every nominee will then be vetted by the research team with their relevant data and crunched through the Social Impact Rating (SIR) system; an index that identifies winners based on the judging criteria. The results are then presented to the IMSHA Leadership Council consisting of eminent local personalities who would support the findings and vote for the winners.

Conceptualised as Iskandar Malaysia’s premier community service award, IMSHA recognises and celebrate individuals, organisations and groups who make a difference within the local communities. The award also intends to increase the awareness that the responsibility of making a more inclusive, compassionate and effective society falls on the hands of everyone alike. A total of 20 award recipients comprising of individuals and organisations were given recognition for their contributions in making a difference in Iskandar Malaysia. The biggest award of the night was the Iskandar Malaysia Tun Musa Hitam Social Hero Award going out to Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk Committee who reactivated businesses along the street, together with more than 300 multi-cultural activities organised. This year saw over 200 nominations for both individuals and

ery frequently we hear news of missing children, child abuse, child marriage, baby selling and other related issues, but only a few cases are solved while others remain uncertain. In conjunction with the recent Iskandar Learning Festival (ILF), Johor Women’s League (JEWEL) hosted a talk on “‘Child Rights in Malaysia: Current Issues”, discussing the seriousness of cases related to (local) children in Malaysia, at Le Grandeur Palm Resort, Senai. The four hour public talk was presented by Dr. Hartini Zainudin, co-founder of Yayasan Chow Kit and Voice of the Children together with Shaney Cheng, Case Management and Treatment Services Manager

at Protect and Save the Children (P.S The Children), who shared their thoughts on cases such as baby selling, child marriage, Amendments to the Child Act, gaps in the system in child protection, prevalence of child sexual abuse in Malaysia, and more. “One of the big issues occurring in the country is Malaysian or nonMalaysian children with no proper documentation being subjected to same immigration control measures including detention, deportation, and restrictions on basic social rights, without considerations of its impact on children, their rights, well-being and development either during short or long term,” said Dr. Hartini during the talk.

Johor Budget 2017 Highlight

RM1.609 billion for a progressive Johor

he state government announced an allocation of RM1.609 billion for the Johor Budget 2017, to get closer to the theme of a progressive Johor that will benefit the welfare of the people. Menteri Besar Dato’ Khaled Nordin said the allocation is based on the projected revenue collections of the state, where next year’s has been increased by 12.86 % compared to the estimated revenue in the 2016 Budget. He explained that with the increase in revenue, the 2017 budget has a surplus of RM1.3 million, something that the

state government has recorded happening for the seventh time in a row since 2011. Khaled added that the total budget; 47% of RM763.3 million is provided for development and the rest for operating expenditures. Khaled added that the budget is designed with three main missions, which is to develop material prosperity, social welfare as well as the empowerment of human potential, explaining that it is the result of much serious thought collected from various parties when considering proposed initiatives. “The state government

has taken a stand, a firm fiscal discipline and prudence is essential in managing the economy of the state successfully,” he said. Through the budget, the state government will ensure that the economy grows rapidly, inclusively and intelligently, creating thousands of job opportunities for the people. Khaled said the state government also pledged that this budget can handle the gap and the rising cost of living as well as creating public infrastructure for the common good, explaining that the quality of life must grow hand in hand with the state’s economy. he third quarter of 2016 saw Iskandar Malaysia securing RM10.85 billion in new investments, bringing the total cumulative committed investment secured to RM218.84 billion from 2006 until 30th September 2016. Of the total cumulative committed investments, RM113.36 billion or 52% represents investments that have been realised as projects on the ground. Datuk Ismail Ibrahim, Chief Executive of Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) said from January 2016 until 30th September 2016, Iskandar Malaysia has made tremendous ground in getting new investments and we are not far from our annual target of RM25 billion for this year. “Iskandar Malaysia continues to do well despite the challenges facing the global economy on the back of this economic region’s resilience and strength in its nine promoted sectors namely Electrical and Electronics; Petrochemical and Oil & Gas; Food & Agro Processing; Logistics; Tourism; Healthcare; Education; Creative; and Business Services. “Domestic investments makes up RM132.13 billion or 60% of the total cumulative committed investments to date,” said Ismail. He added that these investments in turn, create plenty business opportunities for local

entrepreneurs and SMEs as well as job opportunities. This simply means that the investments continue to benefit the Rakyat of Johor and Malaysia. Since 2007, a total of 682,169 jobs have been created in Iskandar Malaysia, both in the nine promoted economic sectors, as well as other sectors such as property, construction and retail of which 15% of these are skilled jobs. Johor has also enjoyed an increase in average household monthly income – from RM4,658 in 2012 to RM6,207 in 2014. T h e F e d e r a l Government has allocated RM2.1 billion for infrastructure and socio-economic development in the economic corridors including Iskandar Malaysia in the 2017 Budget announcement recently. Iskandar Malaysia has reached ten years in November 2016. This economic development region is proud to boast of many notable achievements. Combating Zika and Dengue on a Different Level

hen it comes to combating critical illness such as Zika and Dengue, the whole community of Flat Jalan Tasek 64 Seri Alam geared up with their children by participating in a “Gotong-Royong ‘Search & Destroy’ Against Dengue and Zika” programme conducted by Seri Alam Properties Sdn Bhd with Rotary Club District 3310, Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Johor Health Department and Communication for Behaviourial Impact (COMBI) team from Ministry of Health. Approximately 100 students from SMK Bandar Seri Alam participated in

the gotong-royong cum contest. The participants were divided into 12 groups and each group was tasked to collect garbage, empty tires, empty bins and other disposed waste cans that lead to mosquito breeding. A group that had collected 28 plastic bags of wastage, and individuals who found the most number of mosquito larvae were awarded with prizes. “ The community is urged to hold educational programmes in raising awareness and finding other ways to help the local authorities in curbing Dengue and Zika. Until June this year, local authority in Pasir Gudang recorded the lowest number of Dengue cases which is 1348 cases compared to MPJBT with 1371 cases and MBJB recorded 2851 cases,” said Dato’ Hajjah Normala Abdul Samad, Pasir Gudang Member of Parliament during the launch of the programme. Normala also added that programmes such as gotong-royong should be continued from time to time and not be conducted in an annual basis as it will not ‘destroy’ or curb the issue. Nur’ain Afisha who was a first timer to participate in the gotong-royong was the winner as she caught two mosquito larvae at a time at one of the flats. She added that based on her studies and involvement in such cases; most of the missing children ended up in child trafficking cases. Shaney Cheng on the other hand talked more on issues of sexual grooming and child sexual

abuse which falls into three different categories such as from verbal, visual, and physical in Malaysia. A child victim who underwent between those three abuses was commonly affected and experienced the same amount of trauma in the long term towards their development process. “Wander-able” child; a kid who lacks attention from their parents or caretaker are the easiest target for child sexual perpetrators in selecting their victims. Even though the Child Act (Amendment) 2016 was recently introduced, the amendments gazette were only on child registry, community service order (CSO), family based care, and heavier penalties for offences under Section 31. Most of the talks or campaigns related to Child Rights

or issues were without the presence of the children themselves and therefore, Dr. Hartini and Shaney urged that the society should start to act now by involving their children to participate in conferences or meetings and ask them to share their opinions on this matter. They also urged the Government to consider a ban on whipping child perpetrators and put them under community services and educate them properly while protecting them especially if they are under the age of 18. If any child is violently abused by either of his parents, then one of the parents should lodge a report to the police to protect the child instead of remaining silent. nstitute of Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) made a stop in Johor Bahru for a public forum entitled ‘The many faces of corruption in Malaysia: What are we going to do about it?’ in discussing on how youths’ view corruption in business and ways on mobilising public awareness and support in combating corruption in Malaysia together with its campaign #NyahKorupsi. “1904 corruption cases involving individuals were recorded and investigated by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission from 2013 to 2015, and 1405 of these cases involved the youths in Malaysia. It seems that youth nowadays see corruption as a necessity for them to succeed in life. It is a grey matter that made them confused,” said Danni Rais, speaker from the Organisation for National Empowerment during a public forum on corruption. Corruption is not a new issue that is wandering in Malaysia but widely happening almost everywhere and in every situation of our lives. The perception of each action determines either it is a corruption or not. Alongside Danni Rais, the public forum also invited Vice President of Malaysian AntiCorruption Foundation, Mohd Rafee Md Aris

and Chief Operating Officer of IDEAS, Tricia Yeoh. Danni representing the voice of youth continued expressing to discover and comprehend the subject nature behind every corruption done especially involving the youth whether it is out of desperation to survive life or any other related matters before they were sentenced by the authority. Mohd Rafee on the other hand pointed out that corruption occurred prior to the base of greediness and opportunities available in one’s self. An attitude change is essential and needed in urging the public to combat corruption. “The youth also should have an open mind to think about the future of the country and the generations ahead of us and find a way to fight corruption that is happening today,” said Mohd Rafee. You’ve gone from being an educator to a successful entrepreneur, what’s your secret mantra of success? Life-long learning has been my long-held attitude and I believe that there is still room for improvement. So, instead of talking about my personal secret mantra of success, I would rather talk about entrepreneurship as a whole. I think success belongs to people who have faith and plans, and success will not be realised if people are only showing interest and not taking any action yet. Many people often listen and believe negative comments or discouragements that cause them not to be able to move ahead.

How has Iskandar Malaysia changed the education sector in the region? 20 years ago, being a Johorian, we did not have much choice to further study in our own state. Most of us had to part with our families and travelled to other states or overseas to pursue our dreams. But nowadays, universities not only locally but also from overseas have set up campuses in “EduCity” at Iskandar Puteri. This has resulted in a significant increase in the size of Johor’s talent development in the region. Changes have been apparent and the goal of becoming a “strong and sustainable metropolis of international standing by 2025” does not look so unrealistic.

Do Singaporeans fancy crossing the border to study here?

Our Johor Sultan has been quite vocal about re-establishing the use of the English language. Do you think this will catch on and as an educator, what’s your opinion on this?

English is an international language used in the education and business sectors. Many of the best MBA programmes are taught in English, so speaking it well can put you in a position for better advancement. English was the medium of instruction in Malaysian schools in the 1950s and 1960s with a compulsory pass in Bahasa and Mathematics. The medium of instruction was however changed to Bahasa in the 1970s but in 2003, the Policy of Teaching Science and Mathematics in English was introduced, but it was discontinued seven years later. There was a trend in the 90’s that students would enrol themselves in 3 months Intensive English tuition programme while waiting for their SPM results. Yet in 2010s, the age of those attending tuitions have become younger as many primary school children were rushing for many tuition classes after school. I believe if English is re-established as the medium of instruction, it will surely help our students. With more than 350 million people around the world speaking English as their first language and more than 430 million speaking it as their second language. I fully agree as per what was mentioned by our Johor Sultan that Singapore has done well because of their adoption of English. He said Malaysia can learn from how Singapore has forged national unity through their education system, which I quote has not only helped develop their country but it has also brought their people together regardless of race and religion.

What would Shirley be doing if you didn’t go down the education path? I would be doing charity work and run an orphanage. I am passionate about it and would have loved to do it. Nevertheless, I’m glad that we manage to channel part of the profits from our UBA fees to help sponsor free education to some refugee camps. 10 free English schools in India have benefited and now we are having an education fund for children in India for every student that enrols in our MBA programme. JB Hospital Nostalgia

This was the façade of the Johor Bahru General Hospital in 1946

s news and photos of the fire at Hospital Sultanah Aminah were shared on social media on 25th October 2106, I was filled with sadness and empathy for everyone affected, and grieved with the families who lost loved ones in the tragedy. The Johor Bahru government hospital was once called the Johor Baru General Hospital or GH, in short. In 1977, it was renamed Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) after Sultanah Aminah, the first wife of Sultan Ismail. The earliest hospital in JB was a wooden building used since 1882 and was replaced by the original 5-storey structure with a red brick finishing, designed in a symmetrical layout with East and West wings. Construction of the hospital on a site which commands a panoramic view of the Johor Straits started in 1938 and was completed in 1941. The layout of the hospital was such that wards located in the East and West wings were naturally cooled by sea breezes. JB’s Teochew community fondly refers to the hospital as ‘puay kee lau’ that literally translates to “airplane building” because the aerial view of the building layout resembles an airplane! Senior medical practitioners will fondly recall how their skills were honed in the first post-graduate medical centre in Malaysia established in the JB GH by three medical pioneers, Datuk Dr Lim Kee Jin, Datuk Dr T Sachithanandan and Datuk Dr Sam C E Abraham, in 1969. In 1928, the residence of Ungku Khatijah, the sister of Sultan Abu Bakar, was completed on Bukit Cengkih, a hill behind the hospital that earned its name from the clove (cengkih) plantation here. After her demise, this palace was renovated and used as the hospital’s

This building is now used as the Hematology Ward and part of the Monash University campus while the first-class ward moved to the new extension of the main building in 2009. The hospital compound is bordered by Jalan Mahmoodiah and Jalan Skudai/ Jalan Abu Bakar while Jalan Datuk Wilson which meanders around the main hospital building, was once lined by staff quarters. As patients’ needs increased, these

The government hospital is close to my heart not only because I was born here but also because this was where my parents met each other. While dad, who was from Ipoh, trained and qualified as a hospital assistant here, mum qualified in midwifery. From them, my siblings and I learnt a great deal about the hospital, its wards, interesting cases and the strict rules by which they

were trained under the British medical system. After they were married, my parents were posted to Kota Tinggi Hospital where they were based for several years. On their transfer back to JB GH, their home was the staff quarters at Jalan Datuk Wilson. When dad was on night duty, he and his team would finish their duties quickly and to stay awake until the next round of medicine dispensing, he would spend the time learning Tamil from Indian colleagues. This was how dad acquired a working knowledge of the language and it proved useful to make Indian patients feel more comfortable as dad spoke to them in their own tongue. It was uncanny that on the day I was born, all three of us – my parents and I – were lying in the same hospital but in different wards! Mum recalls that she was still working that day and when she felt the onset of labour, she went home to shower and admitted herself to the ward. In those days, the maternity ward was in a separate building next to the hospital. Later the maternity ward moved to level four of the main building before it shifted into the new extension along with the first-class and royal wards. Recently we discovered dad’s old diary noting the dates he was admitted for jaundice, a day before my mother was also admitted to deliver me! So the first home I knew was my parents’ staff quarters in the hospital compound. One unforgettable childhood memory here was a Christmas Day when the monsoon rain coincided with a super high tide and the hospital compound was flooded by the backflow from the sea, washed up to our front steps! Dad, who enjoyed photography, captured a wide collection of photos of himself and his hospital colleagues – on duty and off duty – and even shots of patients meeting a friendly zebra which had escaped from the nearby zoo and wandered into the hospital compound! HSA continues to provide affordable quality healthcare to the public and when the polyclinic could no longer cope with the volume of patients, an out-patient

My dad and his three daughters [inside car] parked in front of our home in the staff quarters at Jalan Datuk Wilson, adjacent to the hospital clinic was opened at Jalan Mahmoodiah in 2005. The advancements in HSA’s specialists and cardiac departments are so impressive that many patients opt to seek treatment here. So this public hospital is often over-crowded but there is a system to meet patients’ needs. After my parents’ retirement, I accompany them for regular check-ups and also collect their prescriptions from the polyclinic and Mahmoodiah clinic. As a frequent visitor in the wards, I’m familiar with the hospital and saw how space is maximized with new wards created by partitions. Internal renovations must also include electrical extensions to support the lighting and equipment there. And over decades, records of countless renovations in the old building may be too sketchy for hospital administrators to review original or updated floor and electrical wiring plans now. It’s a hard lesson to learn but the recent catastrophe proved how important it is to have a disaster plan and trained safety personnel who are vigilant about conducting strict maintenance checks regularly to guard against fire and similar emergencies in buildings with large numbers of people. Besides hospitals, disaster plans must be put in place in shopping malls, commercial and industrial buildings, movie theatres, hotels, schools, hostels and dormitories. TI

Almost 9000 bamboo sticks harvested from Pontian, Johor were used to complete 15 sculptures which took two weeks in development for each art. ohor Islamic Corporation (PIJ) marked its third year in helping young entrepreneurs by allocating approximately RM115,500 of funds to 69 youth entrepreneurs from Pasir Gudang Parliament via ‘Youth Entrepreneur Aid’ and ‘Hawker Aid’, recently. 18 recipients received an aid worth RM5000 via the Youth Entrepreneur Aid while 51 other recipients were allocated RM500

from the Hawker Aid as an incentive to drive forward in developing their businesses. “Greater involvement of entrepreneurs in the field will also contribute to the economic growth of Johor which leads to people’s welfare. Entrepreneurial culture needs to be further enhanced to ensure that the country will continue to develop and the benefits can be enjoyed by the

public,” said Menteri Besar Johor, Dato’ Mohamed Khaled Nordin when gracing the distribution ceremony at Der’ Cabin Bistro Seri Alam. petite young assistant secretary was crowned Winner for the female category of Tony Roma’s ‘World First Lamb Ribs Eating Contest’ that was held recently in Komtar JBCC with no preparations despite the fact she had spaghetti for breakfast! “This is actually my first time eating lamb ribs from Tony Roma’s and I decided to join in when my sister told me about the contest since last week. Besides, the lamb ribs are pretty tender to eat,” said winner Siti Farhana Azmi who wolfed down a set of lamb rack in four minutes. As for male category, technician Muhd Reza Putra Salam who was also a first timer chomped two racks of lamb ribs within 5 minutes 28 seconds and bagged home the Winner title competing among other seven contenders with last year’s winner as well. “My friend entered the ribs eating challenge last year and I decided to join in this year. I just came back from night shift work and prepared my empty stomach for the contest. In fact, I’ve dined once in a while

awareness about the importance of creating a clean environment that is beautiful, comfortable and safe through the development of landscape. “The programme recognises the contributions of all those who have helped the realisation of the national landscape development policy,

including the provision of public parks and quality recreational facilities.” “It also gives exposure to the public regarding the importance of landscape in improving the quality of life and landscape industry’s contributions to the national economy,” he said during the launch event.

Urging Doctors to Unite against Cancer

he National Cancer Society of Malaysia was in town recently, calling all general practitioners in the state to help spread the word against the growing concerns of cancer. The two day forum was held at Tropical Inn Hotel, JB saw a healthy response from both the public and those from the medical field. President and Medical Director of the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM), Dr. Santhari

Somasundaram said that medical professionals should help people realise the early warning signs of cancer as well as educating the public on cancer prevention and assisting patients on managing their treatment and disease. “We need every medical professional to protect the public. Studies also show that cancer patients do want their primary care physicians to be actively involved in their follow up care.” “It can be

managing other diseases that the patient may have apart from cancer. The physicians also help patients relieve chronic pain, refer them to hospices and provide advice on diet and sexuality”, said Dr. Santhari. She added that this type of care is important in helping patients manage their cancer and get through their days. The roles of different medical professional in cancer control should be provided through Malaysia’s National Cancer Control Plan, which the Federal Government has yet to disclose. “So more than ever, we need primary care physicians and oncologists to support and complement the work of each other: the oncologists treat the cancer, while the physician treats the person,” added Dr. Santhari. - by Amin Khairuddin TI

New Look for PwC Johor Bahru

The three months long renovation work updated the look of their working space which was established there in 1998. Utilising trendy colours from PwC’s corporate colour palletes, the office featured an open office concept with a “hot desking concept” where employees are not assigned to any particular permanent spot or table in the office. The pantry was also revamped with comfortable sofas and loungers to provide a more relaxing space for the staffs.

Rocking it out with the Return of Rockaway!

Malaysia’s premier rock music festival returned with not one, but two BIG BANGS!

fter three years of silence, the local music scene was rocked at its core with the return of Rockaway, surprising fans with not one, but two full concerts that left concert goers gasping for more. The first date, known as The Rockaway Malaysia MotoGP Weekend Festival, brought several renowned international and local acts to Hillside B of the Sepang International Circuit. Skip a month later at Bukit Jalil, the second date dubbed Rockaway the Saga Continues truly kept fan expectations high as thousands flocked the grounds as early as 2pm, checking out the three stages of pure rocking music. The day saw nostalgic performances by local legends, David Arumugam and the Alleycats, Zainal Abidin, as well as a special performance by Kyoto Protocol featuring Man Bai. ‘The Get Up Kids’ then wowed the

crowd with their high pumping set of classic hits. Local heroes Deja Voodoo Spells did a special performance featuring Bumblefoot and the 11 Piece Book of Spells Orchestra that impressed the likes of any onlooker. The boys from One Buck Short gave the crowd their money’s worth with a string of singalong hits that resonated with fans across ages. 90s alternative rock band, Third Eye Blind took the night to another level when the audience sang to favourites including ‘Semi Charmed Life’, ‘Never Let You Go’ and the slow number ‘How it’s Gonna Be’. American Post Hardcore-Punk band, Taking Back Sunday clearly left their mark after a show stopping performance that got the crowd into a frenzy, complete with twirling microphones and on stage antiques

that left the audience screaming for more. The night closed with the 20th anniversary show of iconic band, Butterfingers that saw a huge crowd of all ages gingerly waiting to hear them after an almost seven year hiatus. Loke, Emmet and Kadak showed Rockaway and adoring fans a teaser of what’s to come. n 2nd December 2016, The Rolling Stones will release ‘Blue & Lonesome’, their first studio album in over a decade. Recorded in just three days in London, United Kingdom, ‘Blue & Lonesome’ takes the band back to their

roots and the passion for blues music which has always been at the heart and soul of The Rolling Stones. ‘Blue & Lonesome’ is available in various formats and will be released by Polydor Records. It was produced by Don Was and The Glimmer Twins. The album was recorded over the course of just three days in December last year at British Grove Studios in West London, just a stone’s throw from Richmond and Eel Pie Island where the Stones started out as a young blues band playing pubs and clubs. Their approach to the album was that it should be spontaneous and played live in the studio without overdubs. The band - Mick Jagger (vocals & harp), Keith Richards (guitar), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ronnie Wood (guitar) were joined by their

s women age, relaxing of the vaginal wall can lead to vaginal relaxation syndrome (VRS), which is exacerbated by childbirth, especially from multiple pregnancies and deliveries, and the vaginal atrophy associated with menopause-related hormonal changes. VRS can lead to a number of problems, both physical and psychological, a major one of which is lessening of sexual satisfaction for both the female and her partner, often referred to as “loose vagina”. With improvement of socio-economy and health status, more women are voicing their concern about their ‘intimacy’ problem in the bedroom and how it affects their self-confidence. Where health, beauty and intimacy are perhaps interconnected, demand for treatment of vaginal relaxation syndrome for improvement of sexual performance and aesthetic appearance to boost confidence is increasing.

Female genitalia suffer physiological modifications with the passing of time especially after repeated childbirth. Structural changes in the vaginal mucosa and underlying connective tissue occur because of excessive stretching by the baby passing through the birth canal and the instrumentation. Excessive tension of vaginal skin at the introitus, often result in a deep vaginal tissue tear. Due to rich blood supply, the perineum often heals well without much noticeable scar but if the repair is suboptimal or after a repeated episodes of childbirth, the vaginal opening may become distorted due to underlying scar and the overall outlook of the vagina may change permanently. The phenomenon of loss of collagen fibre’s firmness in the vagina and urethral area is due to excessive stretching from childbirth can cause reduction or loss of vaginal tone, and bring about reduction in sexual fulfilment and stress urinary incontinence. In some women, the vagina can remain irreversibly dilated after childbirth.

Effects of repeated childbirth on sexual function

Menopause and sexual performance After menopause, women’s sexual experience

is often affec ted by loss of libido and vaginal dryness due to loss of oestrogen hormone support. Loss of oestrogen production during menopause is often accompanied by thinning of the vaginal mucosa and elasticity. The process of vaginal atrophy begins in which vaginal mucosa becomes pale and its surface becomes flat and lifeless due to loss of its volume and folds. Vaginal atrophy together with loss of lubrication causes dryness and lack of elasticity, making sexual relations extremely difficult. It also invites frequent vaginal infection and vaginitis. Option of treatment of Vaginal Relaxation Syndrome A variety of VRS treatment options exists from non-invasive approaches to invasive surgical procedures. For the non-invasive approaches, behavioural training such as Kegel exercises

can tighten up relaxed musculature in the pelvic floor and to a lesser extent in the vaginal wall. “ Tightening c r e a m s ”, hormonal creams, and other pharmacological approaches are also available. However, although these are non-invasive, the effectiveness is somewhat limited and temporary, requiring continuous application in the case of the pharmacotherapies. Surgical procedures, in which vaginal and associated tissues are incised and rearranged, can offer a much better and longer lasting result. The results of surgical vaginal repair surgery however have to be balanced against the much greater risks involved in any surgery performed on the extremely sensitive vaginal tissues. Downtime for recovery is longer, and there are recognised risks associated with scar formation or nerve damage leading to loss of sensation on G-Spots area and reduced sexual pleasure. TI

I know I am a good doctor; in fact I’m passionate about my job. I love to see patients walk out of the ward healthily and smiling again. But there was some emptiness that I felt because of the treatment I received from my unemployed ex-husband. There were never whispers of love or sensual touches from him. I could never offer my opinion or defend my rights. His repetitive statement was “Hormat suami! Syurga di bawah tapak kaki suami”! From his point of view, a woman needs to respect her husband by being passive and let him have full control in the relationship. I was constantly in sorrow and I knew that I could do more than just prescribe Paracetamol. Suffering from financial and emotional abuse from early marriage had turned me into an anxious woman with multiple scars in my soul. He often belittled my potentials and believed that I needed to stay at home and just serve my role as a wife and a mother. I couldn’t engage in my own interest or explore my potentials. For example, I’ve always loved telling stories through my writings but had to do it secretly when he wasn’t home or when he was asleep. When he discovered that my manuscript was rejected from a publishing company, he was the happiest man on earth. He also frequently blamed me for his failures from minor to major issues. He blamed me that he had become obese because he had lost the determination to stay fit as I was not slender enough for him. He controlled my finances and w hene ver I brought up the topic, he would become aggressive. His strong physique obscured the fact that he had internal conflicts stemming from a low self-esteem. It was 3pm on 16th June 2015, we had an argument. It was the same issue of me being a bad wife. The usual slapping and screaming occurred but what made my survival instincts into action was when the intensity of the beating had gone from bad to worse. This time it involved kicking, multiple punching on my face and finally he stepped on my abdomen while I was lying helplessly on the floor. Even though I didn’t have ruptured bowel or fractured bones, I suffered pain and bruises. I was terrified and knew that he was unpredictable and was turning into a monster. I waited patiently for the right moment to escape. During this critical moment, I remembered a girl named ‘Spice’ whom I knew many years ago. She was a young ambitious girl who knew what she wanted in

life. She was a good leader and always made firm decisions. At 19, Spice met a handsome young man and became foolishly in love. She looked forward to be his bride and build a family. She became an unhappy wife who struggled to keep the marriage for the sake of the children. She became submissive but the abuse continued. She lost her self-worth and forgot who she was. The unhappy wife lodged a police re p o r t and subsequently received the justice she deserved. The escape re introduced her to Spice again. Spice was me. It was a nickname given to me when I voiced out my disagreement to a chauvinist man who mocked on women’s ability during my high school. I was only 16 but I was strong, vibrant and vocal with my opinions. That was the woman I dreamed to be – to be Spice again. My life after the escape has turned into an exciting journey with blooming opportunities. My role in the society has expanded from just serving Paracetamol into a women’s activist. I have regained my self-worth and dignity by empowering women through my writings. I realised Spice did not disappear but waited for the right moment to shine again… I am now the woman I dreamed to be. However, you should now reallocate whatever you’ve been saving towards your own retirement funds. Never think that you have more disposable income now and could blow it all on a round-the-world cruise or finance a brand new car. Channel all these savings into a retirement fund to supplement your EPF savings for the years to come. Re-assess – Before you can put a realistic retirement plan in place, you have to do an assessment of the

financial risks that can have an impact on your retirement: - Consider the effects of inflation on future purchasing power of your money today. You may end up having only half a loaf of bread with the same amount of money that you’re spending on a loaf today. - Relook into the asset allocation of your investments. An overly conservative asset allocation may put you at risk for not being able to outpace inflation. - Be disciplined on the amount you are withdrawing from your retirement funds so that it does not deplete your retirement assets too quickly. - Take into consideration of the rising health care expenses too. As one ages, health care expenses tend to rise in tandem and can considerably affect your savings if you don’t have a comprehensive health insurance plan. Consider which risks you may be most susceptible to and take the necessary steps to minimise the impact. Re-calculate – After having considered the above, you may want to do

a recalculation of your retirement funding needs by following the steps listed below. You may either seek the help of a financial planner or browse the internet for a retirement planning calculator, which is aplenty: Step 1 : P r o j e c t the first year desired retirement income. Step 2 :Estimate the lump sum retirement funds needed (inflation-adjusted). Step 3 :Determine current and future resources of income needed for retirement funding. Step 4 :Convert these current value of resources to their future value at retirement. Step 5 :Determine the Retirement Gap, if any. Step 6 :Determine the funding needed during the pre-retirement period to close the retirement gap.

It is important to note that your retirement planning should include debt reduction, no new debts, diversifying investments and above all, maintaining good health through proper diet and regular exercise. The question of health is vital during old age as health care can be a major expenditure and may drain your retirement savings. Even if you have medical and critical insurances that cover your hospitalisation & surgical bills and critical illness and disability, this may not include or suffice to cover all the procedures and prescriptions that you actually need to have. Fourth Iskandar Malaysia Eco-Life Challenge saw a participation from 231 primary schools

n its fourth year, the Iskandar Malaysia EcoLife Challenge (IMELC) 2016 which was held at Dewan Seminar, Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Johor saw the participation from 231 primary schools involving 28,000 students. This initiative is a collaboration between IRDA, UTM, JPNJ and Medini Iskandar Malaysia Sdn Bhd (MIM). IMELC 2016 finals was officiated by Tuan Haji A. Rahim Bin Haji Nin, Johor Bahru City Mayor.

IRDA Chief Executive Datuk Ismail Ibrahim said IMELC is more than just an environmental education agenda and a social innovation project as it places importance on activating volunteers, promoting greater public, private and people (3P) partnership, and increasing citizen ownership over social issues. “IMELC has a lot of potential in income generation and cost savings for schools and households in Iskandar Malaysia,” said Ismail. For IMELC 2016, the total carbon reduction recorded among the participating

schools is 290,219.3kgCO2 equivalent, while the amount of money saved and earned is RM42,386.3. In the Recycling category, a total of 77 schools submitted entries and proofs which amounted to 98,414 kg and total income reported from the recycling is RM27,281.33. For Electricity saving, 83 schools submitted the monthly bills and reported a total reduction in 1 month is 9,283.19kWh or RM4,641.60 money saved. For Water saving, 94 schools submitted the monthly bills and total reduction in 1 month is 3,170.72m³ or RM10,463.38 money saved during the competition. IMELC 2016 started on 20th September 2016 and consists of three categories namely Recycling Module, Utility Module and Final Presentation. The Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Kuo Kuang won the first prize for Recycling Module Category with 12,618 kg total of

recyclable items. They received RM1000 cash prize, and Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Kota Kulai won the second place with 6,900 kg total of of recyclable items which brought back RM700 cash prize. Third place won by Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampong Sawah with 6,286 kg of recyclable items and received RM500 cash prize. For the Utility Module (Electricity and Water Saving), Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Bukit Tiram won the first place with 52.5% reduction based on monthly bills and they received RM1000 cash prize. Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Gelang Patah at the second place with 50.5% reduction and received RM700 cash prize. n order to create a better awareness and understanding of recycling, SWM Environment Sdn. Bhd. (SWM Environment) organised “Jelajah Kitar Semula” a recycling tour programme that primarily focused on school children, recently. In conjunction with the end of Ujian Pernilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and the end of this year’s schooling session, SWM Environment started their journey at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJK (T)) Jalan Yahya Awal, Johor Bahru. Mohd Zan Arris, the Regional Manager of South Johor SWM Environment said that the organisation of the tour was dedicated to the education process and enlightenment about recycling practices in line with the enforcement of the Solid Waste Isolation at the Source back in September 2015. The inaugural programme included a briefing and an exhibition on recycling,

a recycling based game and recycling drive initiative in the form of a competition between classes, and eventually schools in the state. It also provided an opportunity for SWM Environment and SJK (T) Jalan Yahya Awal to exchange knowledge and ideas about recycling. 4 students from four secondary schools in Johor participated in the second De’Fermi Debate Challenge Cup in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai. Organised by Nuclear Engineering Students Association of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (NESSUTM), the competition promoted nuclear energy awareness along with energy security and sustainability to the public especially the students. Sekolah Menengah Sains Sembrong won the challenge, bringing home the coveted trophy and RM700 cash while Sekolah Menengah Sains Muar emerged second winning RM500. Ahmad Arief Hakimi from Sekolah Menengah Sains Muar was

crowned best speaker at the tournament. “I’m thankful for the award as we had prepared a lot since a couple of weeks back, but the competition was tough since all of them were good teams,” said Arief. The three day programme also involved participants from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Desa Skudai and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Tun Aminah. Aside from the competition, the organisers also conducted debate workshops and group discussions on nuclear energy. Seafood lovers may feast on the ‘Ikan Goreng Berlada’, a spicy fried Mackerel dish along with Malaysian favourite ‘Sambal Udang’ or shrimps cooked in spicy chilli paste that certainly gives the dish its hot touch. As for the greens, they have ‘Sayur Goreng Jawa’ which is essentially the Javanese version of stir fried vegetables with fermented soy cake or tempeh as its main ingredient. Also try their aromatic ‘Gulai Lemak Labu dan Nenas’, a combination of pineapple and pumpkin cooked in coconut milk which is part of the set. There is also ‘Ubi Kentang Berlada’ or fried potatoes in chillies

and ‘Sira Ikan Bilis dan Kacang’ which is made of spicy fried anchovies and ground nuts. Choose between the salted fish or coconut floss as your condiments or even have them together. Mix those dishes together with the mound of white rice along with the fried noodles; sharing it in a big tray completing the authentic taste and experience of Nasi Ambang. Trump, a real estate business tycoon, has emerged as the winner over Hillary Clinton, to be the 45th president of the world’s strongest nation. Stock markets across continents fell drastically only to rise again a few days after digesting the news. However, Asian currencies continue to fall such as the Malaysian Ringgit, Thai Baht, Chinese Yuan and Japanese Yen. Confidence levels have dipped from Australia to Japan. Uncertainties have caused jitters in investors, and until the situation becomes clearer as to how much Asian economies will be negatively impacted

from the reversal of globalisation, we are in for a period of downward pressure. During the campaign, Trump had repeatedly emphasised that he will withdraw from international trade pacts including the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) which exportoriented countries like Malaysia had hoped for. The next few months will prove to be a very tense period for Asian countries as they wait out the new administration’s directions. There isn’t much good news in the horizon apart from the warm reconciliation that President Obama has extended to ensure a smooth and successful transition to President-elect Trump. The United States has had many successful nonpoliticians turn presidents which include the very much respected President Ronald Reagan. The success of Trump to have listened and responded to the people who were marginalised by the loss

of jobs to developing countries has wide implications for the continued presence of manufacturing jobs in Asia. If, for example, there are disincentives for US multinationals to relocate to Asia, the economies of many Asian countries will suffer. I believe that this reversal of liberal pro-business climate will happen. However, it will take time for companies to relocate back to the USA. The upside of Asia is that we are no longer so-dependent on American companies as we used to. Malaysia for

example has deepened its trade relations with China and Japan. The future of manufacturing in Asia will then rely more on the ability of these leading nations to replace the TPP with a Pan Asia-Europe pact. I have strong confidence that Asia, India, China and Japan will coalesce a new spirit of cooperation with the European countries and Britain. The final analysis of whether the world economy will spin down for a prolonged period depends on stability of the region and the new leadership of the USA continuing to engage Asia. I have deep confidence that Trump, being a very smart business leader, knows that a strong global economy is good for Americans and vice-versa. Besides, he knows how real estate works and I personally hope we can attract Trump to have more American companies to invest in Malaysia especially in Iskandar Malaysia. “What separates the winners from the losers is how a person reacts to each new twist of fate” – Donald Trump. Investors in Iskandar Malaysia ought to take that advice seriously and continue working with changes rather than surrendering. TI

The new school is expected to be completed in 2018 and will have 18 classrooms as well as basic facilities including four science labs, multimedia centre, and a library among others. 5 Things Missing from Budget 2017 – Part One Opinion

arket watchers had waited in anticipation for announcements relating to the budget which they hope will help kick-start the otherwise quiet property market in Malaysia. We list down five things missing from Budget 2017. Bandar Malaysia What: For the uninitiated, this Sungei Besi military camp will be developed into an iconic mixeduse development called Bandar Malaysia with a GDV of RM150 billion, housing the HSR station and two MRT stations - Bandar Malaysia North and Bandar Malaysia South. The latter will be the interchange station connecting the MRT Circle Line to the HSR Line. Bandar Malaysia will also be built by a Chinese consortium - China Railway Group. The site area is around 196 hectares and will comprise 27,000 quality and affordable homes. There will also be a dedicated commercial district to support new startups as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Why: Market watchers had waited in anticipation for announcements relating to Bandar Malaysia as this will kick-start the otherwise quiet property market in Kuala Lumpur. While nothing has been announced, Malaysia and China has signed the Framework Financing Agreement and Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) Contract for the East Coast Rail Line project. According to Malaysia’s SecretaryGeneral to the Treasury, Dr Irwan Serigar Abdullah, China will finance and construct the RM55 billion project that will connect Port Klang, ITT Gombak, Bentong,

High Speed Rail What: In July 2016, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with his counterpart Dato Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The deadline for the HSR project completion has since been pushed back from 2020 to 2026. There are altogether eight stations for the Singapore-KL leg - one in Singapore and seven in Malaysia. The HSR terminus in Singapore will be located in Jurong East, within Jurong Lake District while the stations in Malaysia will comprise Iskandar Puteri, Batu Pahat, Muar, Ayer Keroh, Seremban, Putrajaya and Bandar Malaysia. Why: The High Speed Rail (HSR) project is closely tied with Bandar Malaysia and will cut down commute time from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in 90 minutes flat. Market watchers had expected more details to be announced with regards to the timeline and execution of the project. Like Bandar Malaysia, budget announcements for the HSR project will help reignite the property market from Iskandar Malaysia all the way to Kuala Lumpur. However, nothing was announced.
