Michelangelo’s Restaurant

IT’S A PETTING AFFAIR @ PET WORLD JOHOR BAHRU

O

ur constant food fetish bring us to our latest discovery, Michelangelo’s Restaurant, an Italian restaurant located at Jln Merah Saga, Chip Bee Gardens Holland Village, Singapore. The food prepared in authentic Italian flavour comes with a posh ambience to soothe the mind. Our appetizers led by a Caeser Salad romaine served with poached eggs and parmesan followed by a Calamari Fritti which transported us to the lands of Florence.

P

et World Johor Bahru, the 1st Southern Pets and Aquatics Exhibition embarked the shores of the Southern region of the Peninsular Malaysia on the 8th and 9th December 2012 at EXPO @ Danga City Mall . Organized by Fairs & Events Management Sdn. Bhd., Pet World Johor Bahru is a new expansion from the Pet World Malaysia series (2008 – 2012) in Mid Valley held annually. Due to high demand from pet lovers and the suppliers, the organizer has finally decided to expand Pet World Malaysia and thus; Pet World Johor Bahru was born.

The main course was Pasta Linguine infused with Tandoori chicken and Crème rose sauce, a well balanced fusion. The Pesce Nel Vino, a barramundi white meat with white wine, cream sauce and a side of mash potatoes looks and taste just as exquisite as it’s name itself. Desserts in the form of homemade cheesecake doesn’t say comfort food any better and the Tiramisu Trodizionale teases the palates to put aside the diet and pamper on. The staff are delightful making Michelangelo’s a sure win and a regular ‘go-to’ restaurant.

Having the same passion for pets, the organizer believes that exhibitions of such will be able to help boost the pet industry to be more competitive and on par compared with Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and even Japan. There were many activities lined up and fantastic prizes that were given away during the two days event. More than 100 exhibiting brands for pets covering dogs and cats’ foods, accessories, toys, collars, leashes, and even exotic pets like snakes, geckos, iguanas and many more were also showcased. Aquatic pets such as the Guppy and Betta fish were also not left out.

Italian cuisine brought closer to home and to heart by Michelangelo’s Restaurant

“We see a high growth potential in the pet industry and become a more developed industry like those in Japan and Taiwan. Therefore, as pet lovers, we decided to use exhibitions to promote our pet industry in hope of gaining more recognition worldwide. Not only exhibitions could help the industry, it could also generate awareness and fun time for all pet lovers. All we want is to see happy faces”, concluded the organizer.

RONAN KEATING Brand New Studio Album - ‘Fires’ is here to Sizzle! Ronan Keating the Irish Boyzone hottie recording artist, singer-songwriter, musician, and philanthropist was in Singapore late last November to the delight of his fans and media. His brand new studio album ‘Fires’ was released through Polydor Records on 3rd September 2012, and features some of the best songs of Ronan’s career, teaming rousing, exhilarating guitar anthems with yearning, heart-rending ballads that showcase Ronan’s voice at its very best. It’s also his first album of original material in 6 years!

I

t is the sound of an artist reinvigorated and beginning a new phase, returning to the music he is passionate about with stunning results. To a building soundtrack of crashing guitars, the single conveys a wistful, fervent assurance to a loved one, spurring them on with the promise of solace and protection.

The new album sees Ronan reunited with song writing partners Greg Alexander and Rick Nowells for the first time since 2003. Previously, the songwriting dream team penned some of Ronan’s biggest hits including ‘Life Is a Rollercoaster’ and ‘Lovin Each Day’. Ronan has also worked with some old friends including Steve Lipson (‘Last Thing On My Mind’), Brian Rawlings at Metrophonic and Don Mescall, plus hot new Swedish producers Electric and the writing team of Paddy Dalton & Mathias Wollo. Ronan said, “The album is back to proper pop again and I’ve been working with the guys behind ‘Life Is a Rollercoaster’ again. I’ve been spending my time getting this album just right and I’m excited about people hearing it.” The album is even more hotly-anticipated as it is Ronan’s first collection of original songs in six years. His previous three albums - ‘Songs For My Mother’, ‘Winter Songs’ and ‘When Ronan Met Burt’ – all saw Ronan rework some of his favourite songs from the past and gave him the rare opportunity to team up with the legendary Burt Bacharach for an entire album together. Ronan has since sold over 25 million records worldwide as a solo artist and has notched up multiple Number 1 Albums and Singles. For now, the focus is on Fires, and the world tour planned for 2013 – his 20th anniversary of making music. “I really am hungry for it,” Keating says, positively jumping out of his seat. “I wanna be back on the radio – six years away is a long time for me.

Ronan’s debut feature film ‘Goddess’ also premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2012. The film sees Ronan co-star alongside Laura Michelle Kelly (Sweeney Todd, Mary Poppins). He also continues to be a judge on the Australian X Factor. www.waveslifestyle.com

W

orldwide superstar Rihanna, winner of the Video Of The Year for “We Found Love,” opens the next chapter of her reign as this century’s Queen of the Billboard Hot 100 with her new single “Diamonds.” Live Nation also announced the Rihanna Diamonds World Tour 2013. “Diamonds” is the first single released last September from Rihanna’s upcoming seventh studio album on Island Def Jam. “Diamonds” was produced by Norwegian hitmakers Stargate, whose track record of worldwide Top 10 hits with Rihanna stretches back to 2006’s “Unfaithful,” and includes “Don’t Stop the Music,” “Take A Bow,” “Rude Boy,” “Only Girl (In the World),” and “What’s My Name” (featuring Drake), and “Talk That Talk.” Rihanna Diamonds World Tour 2013 is slated to open at the Niagara Center in Buffalo on 8th March 2013, with North American dates scheduled through 4th May at the new Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. Rihanna’s Video Of The Year at the MTV VMA’s capped a near year-long campaign in support of her sixth studio album, Talk That Talk (released November 21, 2011). The album’s string of global hits spanned over a year, starting with the worldwide #1 smash, “We Found Love” (featuring Calvin Harris). The song spent 10 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, beating Rihanna’s personal best of 7 weeks

What’s New?

On 29th November 2012, the first LEGOLAND Park in Asia got into the Christmas spirit with another first – Asia’s tallest LEGO Christmas tree. LEGOLAND Malaysia unveiled the nine metre tree at a special lighting ceremony. Created from more than 400,000 LEGO DUPLO bricks, it towers over The Beginning area of the 76 acre Park and decorated with 260 LEGO ornaments. The tree was lit by Siegfried Boerst, General Manager of LEGOLAND Malaysia.

at #1 in 2007, for “Umbrella” (featuring Jay-Z). Rihanna made history as “We Found Love” became her 11th #1 hit on the Hot 100, and her 20th Top 10 hit. She collected her 20 Hot 100 Top 10 singles faster than any other solo artist, as reported by Billboard.com, and placed Rihanna second only to the Beatles. In the ‘20-and-over’ Top 10 hits race, Rihanna enters a very rarefied field as just the fifth woman to earn the honour.

The spectacular tree took approximately 10 weeks to build and was designed with an advanced computer programme, and took a team of nine people to complete the assembly. Visitors and media were also treated to carol singing by youths from the Calvary Teenage Girl’s Home from Johor Bahru.

The recipient of six Grammy Awards and seven Billboard Music Awards, Rihanna has sold over 37 million albums and 146 million digital tracks worldwide, and currently holds the record for top-selling digital artist of all time. A member of the TIME 100 most influential people in the world, Forbes named Rihanna the world’s #1 social media star with over 2.7 billion views on YouTube/VEVO, the most ever for any female artist, over 60 million Facebook fans, and over 26 million Twitter followers. In addition to her 11 Hot 100 #1 singles and overall 22 Top 10 singles, she also has 18 #1 singles on the Billboard Dance Club Song Charts. We at WAVES Lifestyle absolutely love her Diamonds single and give it a 5 out of 5 WAVES! Source: Universal Music Singapore

SSK - Bintang Rap Tanah Melayu Serious Selamba Krew, more popularly known as SSK - have come a long way since gaining success with their debut EP – RM (Rap Melayu) in 2009. From gaining fame on TV3’s Muzik-Muzik live show to nominations in JUNK’s Best Breakthrough Act of 2009, VIMA, and AVIMA, SSK have gained bragging rights the hard way and have proven that you can’t knock the hustle indeed. For you guys who are still in the dark, SSK is a trio made of three hip hop rappers; NBE, Saph, and turntablist DJ Jocular. Formed in 2007, SSK is also part of Malaysia’s respected underground hip hop collective known as Rogue Squadron which was formed by The Rebel Scum as a platform for likeminded acts. SSK’s new offering to the listeners is RTM (Rap Tanah Melayu), a heavy hitting hip hop album which will be etched in Malaysian hip hop as one of the best efforts put forth. The album kicks off with the title track RTM, a lyrically impeccable track which brings the essence of battle tracks and ‘ill’ crafted lyrics. Saiko is a feel good track which jibes love tales of today; “Dulu mereka bercinta bagai

nak rak, Sekarang bergaduh sampai balingbaling rak, Bila berjumpa bertekak, bertikam lidah, Hati terluka, semakin dipendam semakin parah”-NBE Altimet lending his vocals for Bapakku Kahwin Lagi makes the track a sure hit with its funny intonations; “abah aku kahwin lagi, Dulu ada mama saja sekarang sudah tambah mummy” – Altimet. Enam Penjahanam featuring The Rebel Scum has a beat and turntable scratches that will induce goose bumps and lyrics that will make you keep this track on constant rotation! The underground vibe of the track proves that SSK are still keeping to their roots regardless of their mainstream fame; “ada aku kesah aku tak amik pusing walau hip hop tak musim kita tetap buat bising” – HQA (The Rebel Scum) Jin Hackman’s featuring on Lagu Tajuk Lagu and Sayla on Kuala Berlumpur are among the highlights on this heavily highlighted album. Overall, the album is a hit with no misses. All the tracks gel perfectly and the beats and lyrics on each track makes this album a star studded affair.

WASSUP 2013? B

elieve it or not, most of us have a curious bone in us and topics such as zodiacs or predictions often raise an interest because we just want to know what is out there for us. 2013 is a year where some feared because of the No.13 and many purchased homes, completed renovations and undertook major projects by 2012 simply to avoid stepping

into 2013. Should we really be that afraid? So what do the soothsayers say for 2013? of hostility will reduce considerably. A new sense of peace will fill the year. Countries will display better diplomacy and goodwill among each other, with more friendly coalitions and cooperations taking place. Pisces Pisces people may look forward to see plenty of positive changes in their lives. You may buy or build your own house this year. Aries The year 2013 holds many possibilities and promises. It, however, depends on how you choose to leverage these opportunities. You will also need to be vigilant about your health. Taurus Need to be very careful, almost walking on a tightrope, in order to keep things sorted. The year may be full of challenges, especially on the social front. Gemini Gemini people shall be happy and experience good times. Both your health and wealth will be enriched. You may experience changes in your social circle. www.waveslifestyle.com

Virgo The year would be smooth and you will take all the decisions weighing pros and cons carefully. Matters related to finances, especially joint accounts should be taken care of judiciously. Libra The year sees a healthy mix of financial status, progressive career and peaceful life. Some domestic issues need to be sorted out. Scorpio The year 2013 may prove to be especially challenging for Scorpio people as they feel cramped for space and this leads to frustrations. However, around the middle of the year it will give you a lot of relief in all areas of your life. Sagittarius 2013 will bring both positive and negative experiences. Fame is most likely on the cards. If there is litigation going on, you will most probably win the case. Personal and professional partnerships are likely to develop.

Beauty & Fashion

A sneak peek into

F-A-S-H-I-O-N By: Sugenya Manogaran

Fashion in the 60s Sexiness took on a whole new level in the 60s - the well-known bikinis, miniskirts, fake eyelashes and stiletto heels were introduced. People were also starting to dress in crazy prints and bright neon colours. Towards the end of the 60s, the famous bell-bottomed trousers came into trend. These unique cut trousers were usually complimented with chiffon blouses or roll neck sweaters. Fashion in the 70s The 60s look continued to stay distinctive in the 70s – miniskirts and bellbottomed trousers. In the late 70s, the platform shoes materialized. With soles ranging from two to four inches thick, both men and women wore it. The fitted blazer, which broadens slightly at the hip, was another notable trend. It covered different types of fabrics, ranging from wool to leather. Fashion in the 80s The 1980s was clearly the era of revolution. We could also say that it was the era of expressive dressing. Everyone was looking for ways to express themselves through the clothes they wore. Men grew long hair and even wore heavy make-up, while women were clad in layers of

12

clothing and were seen in short hair. As funny as it sounds, this was also the time when the underwear became a significant fashion accessory. Both sexes were wearing those, which were modelled by celebrities. Women tend to go for a wide array of pale colours, with delicate embellishments, while men went for the colourful ones and ‘tapered’ boxers. Fashion in the 90s Tight-fitting trousers became popular among the women in the 90s. Bodysuits were often worn as tops with these trousers. The ever famous cowboy boots was a common accessory during this period. Other accessories include the headscarves, leggings and oversized sweaters. During those days, if you take a trip to the streets, you will be surprised to find mothers dressed in oversized sweaters and black leggings together with their daughters. How cute! Fashion as a cycle It is indeed amazing to see how many of these trends always finds its way from the past, re-emerging again in the future. Many are now seen seeking vintage, old-school or in other words RETRO fashion into their wardrobe and I don’t think we will have it any other way! www.waveslifestyle.com

Read on to learn more of retro fashion culture and maybe it’s time to check out their collection and give yourself and the wardrobe a 360° change! Beauty & Fashion

Up close & personal with home-grown beauty, KimberlEy Leggett or KimmyLeggs as she is fondly known as How did modeling come about? After I joined the Estee Lauder Model Search 2010 and was in the top 10 at the age of 17, a local modeling company in Penang asked me to join them. I was studying my IB diploma at that time which is a rigorous program and only did catwalk shows or a handful of photoshoots for small malls or brands in Penang (my hometown). It was something I did on the side because I was focused on school and its fun to ‘strut your stuff’, ha..ha..! Your feelings when your name was called out as Miss Universe Malaysia 2012? Can someone pinch me? It seemed too unreal… I had dreamt about it, but to actually have it happen is a different story.

18

You also won three subsidiary titles of Miss Photogenic, Best Bikini Body and Nestle Fitness Award. Were you surprised to win so many titles in one night and which award is dear to you? I was surprised because I had never put so much thought into the subsidiary titles as I felt all the girls were equally as deserving for them. I am honoured to have won all of them but if I had to choose, the Best Bikini Body award holds the most emotional value to me. The Gala Night was the first time I had worn a bikini in public, not even my friends (besides my few close girlfriends) have seen me in a bikini! I had always struggled with feeling confident in my own skin or with my body as I had been overweight before. I went on that stage feeling the best I had ever felt and confident, which meant a lot to me, especially

as it’s now a reminder for me to feel good about myself. When not modeling, what do you like doing? I love to go to the gym and am a bit of fitness nut! It’s my little escape from the world, to be in the zone while running; and I love it because you can listen to music or watch T.V while you’re on the treadmill. It’s a great stress relief! Besides that, I love to watch movies at the cinema with my friends, or watch T.V series box sets with my girlfriends! There’s cooking and baking which is always fun too; the eating part especially and I guess I’m pretty much the average teenager. I like to ‘lepak’ in malls, go shopping, talk about boys with my friends and get our nails done - that type of stuff! www.waveslifestyle.com

KIMBERLEY LEGGETT MISS UNIVERSE MALAYSIA 2012 Do you consider yourself as a shy person? Only sometimes, if I’m in an unfamiliar situation or I am meeting people for the first time. You get over that though, and I think it’s the first impression jitters, but they go away eventually. What is your best asset? I believe I wear my heart on my sleeve and I always stay true to who I am. No matter how hectic or crazy things may get, or what expectations people have of you- you should always remain who you are and stay loyal to your own morals and beliefs. You participated in “Relay for Life” event where you walked the whole night to signify an ongoing battle against cancer. Why is this important to you? I participated in Relay for Life during my last year at high school with my friends. It was www.waveslifestyle.com

important to me because it was all of us as a group, not only walking continuously in a relay to walk the whole night but a reminder to all of us that cancer is an ongoing battle. It was my first time having such an experience and it was a great event where I felt that no matter what age or race you were, the only thing that mattered was that we are all shedding light on the cause together. If you win the Miss Universe 2012 pageant, what is the one change you would make in this world? A lot of things that I would like to try to change would probably require superpowers! Realistically, I would try to get the world to be a more informed and healthier place - to know what nutritious and good foods are so that we live longer, make proper, nutritious food choices and improve the statistics of how many mouths are being fed in the world.

What is your beauty and fitness mantra? When it comes to beauty, I keep the regime simple but consistent - cleanse, tone and moisturize daily. One thing I swear by is to always take off your makeup before you go to sleep no matter how tired you are. Trust me, it makes a big difference. Fitnesswise, I’m a gym junkie (literally!) as I exercise everyday but I would recommend anyone to try exercising for at least 30minutes everyday or try to exercise every other day. Switch up the exercises you do and keep it interesting. Do yoga or go for a spin class. Any final words to aspiring models? Never be afraid to follow your dreams, but don’t lose yourself in the journey. No matter how many doors close, you will eventually find the key to the right one, so don’t be discouraged and take it as your motivation to prove the ones who said ‘NO,’ wrong.

CURSED by Jennifer L. Armentrout CURSED is the story of one Ember Williams, brought back to life by her little sister, Olivia. With a new life comes a new catch: every living thing that Ember touches dies immediately. That simple explanation is enough to move the story beyond the hook, towards the conflict and consequences that come with such ability. It’s been said that humans make connections not only through conversations, but through the physical aspects. In Ember’s case, that fact meant she was unable to form friendships or relationships for fear of causing their deaths through an accidental touch. The previously cheerful, popular teenager chooses to keep to herself and shun other people, leading to a particularly lonely existence in school, hidden within the depths of her hoodie. It feels sadistic to say that the emotional trauma was well done, and such a pleasure to read as Ember fought to find her own happiness. Hayden, the love interest, is a call-back to Armentrout’s original leading man (Aiden from the Covenant series) - compassionate and gracious, more subdued and less wisecracks. His personality and gentle approach kept Ember’s unwilling trust in him and character-wise, Hayden’s conflict stemmed mainly from the fact that he was the son of Ember and Olivia’s kidnapper. Though Ember was drawn to Hayden, she was level-headed enough to realise how sick it was to feel attracted to him. The resolution felt a bit clumsily done, with the reasons feeling tacked on so as to show the parallels between the two families and complete the circle. More could be fleshed out about the main antagonist; as it was, he happened to be mysterious and evil for the sake of keeping Ember’s suspicion alive.

THE CASUAL VACANCY by J. K. Rowling THE CASUAL VACANCY is a book that was, and is not, meant to reach Harry Potter heights. It feels more like a calculated measure, a breather of sorts as Rowling plans to follow TCV with a children’s series. I’m of the mind that it is a slow-burning page-turner and stands perfectly well on its own merits. Set in the little town of Pagford, this tragicomedy (an amalgamation of tragic and comedy) revolves around the mundane everyday lives of the Pagford villagers. Their little world gets shaken up with the death of a beloved town council member, and from there chaos ensues as allegiances shift and relationships stumble in the town’s effort to appoint a new member. Issues of nepotism and a small town mindset are tackled, with the ruling family’s foundation being further shaken with the unconventional self-appointed nominees. It’s a tangled web of relationships within Pagford, as the smallest action or gossip propels the town into frenzy. At the start, the various characters may be hard to keep track of, as we navigate the lives of grandparents, parents and children. Once the threads start lining up in place and weave together, it makes for a compelling page turner, one that details the inner turmoil and mundane, petty concerns of every Pagfordian. The pacing was constant, which at times makes for a boring read, though the little spikes in tension kept me reading on. Though the ending didn’t leave me breathless or pining with parting sorrow, I finished feeling oddly satisfied. One thing that might surprise readers and long-time Harry Potter fans is the fact that none of the characters are clear cut protagonists or antagonists. The characters’ humanity comes through, and the ambiguity in their characterization makes this book a winner for me. www.waveslifestyle.com

Romantic Films for Valentine’s Once again Cupid strikes on 14th February and for those who aren’t interested in splurging on dozens of roses or couple’s dinner meal, we are here to suggest some romantic films which you and your loved one can snuggle up to in the comfort of your home. Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012) Okay not necessarily highly romantic but who can miss out ogling at Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) for the final time. This grand finale released late last year was a highly anticipated film of the Twilight saga and it did not disappoint. We think this film is something the guys wouldn’t mind indulging with their girlfriend or wife as its action-packed where Bella and the Cullens, together with any allies they can assemble are preparing to fight a crucial, ultimate battle, to protect their family. Just Go with It (2011) Danny (Adam Sandler) must engage Katherine (Jennifer Aniston), his faithful assistant, to pretend to be his soon to be ex-wife. Danny must pretend that he is married, because he lied to his dream girl, Palmer (Brooklyn Decker) and to keep the woman he loves, covering up one lie soon turns into many lies. Does Danny finally end up with Palmer or Katherine forms the rest of the plot? The Ugly Truth (2009) A romantic comedy inundated with sexual jokes starring Abby (Katherine Heigl) a morning show TV producer who firmly believes in true love and is a big supporter of complex self help books. Coming home from a disastrous date, she happens to see a segment of a local television show, The Ugly Truth, featuring Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler), whose cynicism about relationships prompts Abby to call in to argue with him on-air. The next day, she discovers the TV station owner has hired Mike to do a segment on her show. How this two gets together is a real treat to watch. P.S I Love You (2007) Okay for this one, guys’ better get the tissue-box ready as it’s a bit of a tear jerker but with a happy ending. Holly (Hillary Swank) is beautiful, smart and married to the love of her life - a passionate, funny, and impetuous Irishman named Gerry (Gerard Butler). So when Gerry’s life is taken by an illness, it takes the life out of Holly. Before he died, Gerry wrote Holly a series of letters that will guide her, not only through her grief, but in rediscovering herself. With Gerry’s words as her guide, Holly embarks on a journey of rediscovery in a story about marriage, friendship and how a love so strong can turn the finality of death into a new beginning for life. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) Once again a lovely romantic comedy that you can watch several times without getting bored and you could probably learn a thing or two from this film! Benjamin (Mathew McConaughey) is an advertising executive competing with two female co-workers for a major campaign for a diamond merchant. He cuts a deal with his competitors that the account is his if he can make a woman of their choice fall in love with him in 10 days. In comes Andie (Kate Hudson) who, in turn, is writing a story on how to lose a guy in 10 days as a bet with her boss to be allowed to write more substantial stories. With a hidden agenda in each camp, will either party be able to complete their mission? www.waveslifestyle.com

extremely tedious process and takes long hours to prepare. I’ve been told many times that the best Laksa Johor can only be found at home - lovingly made during special celebrations. Going to the market, assembling the numerous ingredients needed for the gravy, like herbs and spices, and fresh “Ikan Tenggiri” or “Ikan Parang” is already one big job and, this is just the beginning. Then, preparing these ingredients is very labour intensive because to get the authentic taste and flavour, it has to be done by hand - the old-school way. So, usually most of the family, or extended families and even neighbours are involved. Sitting down together, preparing food together is a great bonding ritual.

In this food trail series, Tony brings us authentic Laksa Johor and Beggar’s Chicken. Most of us Johorians may not be even aware what a true Laksa Johor is and have often misunderstood “mee curry” as the real deal. Read on to learn more and of course head down to get a taste! Laksa Johor is a truly unique and delicious style of laksa created in Johor. Legend has it that Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor (1833 - 1895) was visiting Europe, and when in Italy, he fell in love

with spaghetti! When Sultan Abu Bakar returned to Johor, he directed the palace chef to create a dish combining the traditional laksa gravy using local spices coupled with spaghetti. Laksa Johor was thus invented and perhaps may be one of the earliest examples of East-West fusion cuisine. While Laksa Johor is uniquely Johor, it is surprisingly difficult to find this dish at the local eateries. The reason being that the preparation of Laksa Johor is

Finally, when all the ingredients are ready, a talented chef who has mastered the art and skill to put it all together to create this magically delicious dish is needed! Some may find the flavour slightly fishy, so it could be a dish that requires an acquired taste. I found the broth to be delicious and wholesome. Fortunately, there are a few eateries like the following in Johor Bahru that serves good Laksa Johor at reasonable prices and it may be worth your while to try it.

Beggar’s Chicken @ Ban Heong Seng Restaurant Not known to many but this is another interesting and unique dish to tantalize the locals’ taste buds, and I am glad to share this heavenly dish with you. Find out how this dish is prepared and upon reading, I am sure you are picking up your phone to make an order!

B

an Heong Seng restaurant located near Danga Bay, JB is known for its four signature dishes. I shall call these Ban Heong Seng’s “Four Heavenly Kings” dishes. Ban Heong Seng’s beggar’s chicken/duck can be considered their “King of Kings”. Their other signature dishes are country fish, oyster rice and melon soup. Their beggar’s chicken is made by wrapping a fresh chicken in paper and plastic, and then encasing it in clay. The encased chicken is then buried in a bed of white hot charcoal and left there to bake for 8 hours. When ready to serve, the encased chicken is dug up with a shovel, and wheeled in a wheelbarrow to the dining area. The clay that had kept all the chicken’s juices and herbal flavours during the long hours of cooking is carefully cracked open with a hammer. The plastic and paper are then removed and the chicken is ready to be served and of course devoured!

www.waveslifestyle.com

When the plastic and paper wrapping is removed, a puff of aromatic steam bursts into the air. The pleasant herbal fragrance catches the attention of everyone around. The succulent, juicy chicken is then revealed. After seeing the spectacle of breaking open the beggar chicken’s clay shell and seduced by the herbal fragrance, everyone will be eager to tear into the plump chicken. Pulling apart the chicken exposes the many different types of herbs that went into preparing this beggar’s chicken. The herbal flavoured chicken is naturally sweet. The tasty flesh falls off the bone with the lightest touch and the meat is very juicy, tender and smooth. Ban Heong Seng’s is definitely one of the best beggar’s chicken that I have ever tasted. Delicious and fun to eat but do call the restaurant ahead (at least one day in advance) as the chicken need to be prepared hours ahead of serving.

moking used to be a touchy subject, especially to those who have been subjected to second-hand smoke. I used to be shooed and eyeballed for asking people to put out their cigarette while I was eating at a mamak stall or taking a stroll in the park. But ever since Johor Bahru have enforced the non-smoking law and started to fine smokers, I believe it should be an open subject for all to discuss. I do not hate smokers, in fact I have many friends that are heavy smokers and in line with that I raise my concerns. Malaysians have been pampered all this while and we need to be on par with leading countries on this issue. Honestly, I don’t mind if smokers want to puff and take their life but please spare mine! I love my life and I want to live it to the fullest, so you can understand my frustration when I am walking in a mall, or standing at the taxi stand, smokers have no regard for me or the surroundings and just puff away inconsiderately. I know I can’t stop someone from smoking but please smoke somewhere only you would inhale and later face the consequences as smokers seem to have no value to life by puffing away smoke that is equivalent to that coming out of a bus exhaust! I am proud that JB has seen the need of www.waveslifestyle.com

enforcing a non-smoking law. To re-iterate, the front page of The Sun Newspaper on the 2nd July 2012 claims that, “since 2010 RM4,497,250 in fines have been issued by ministry officials to some 18,000 individuals for smoking in prohibited places”. That is indeed a fortune coughed up and it amazes me that how one can part with their hard-earned money on such type of fines. Unfortunately, most people are not afraid of the law despite the numerous “No smoking” signs and fines that are in place. We are still subjected to second-hand smoke and perhaps a suggestion of putting smokers into a “box” or cabin should be in place. The Ministry should enforce a “No Smoking in Public Act” and start building “boxes” in various areas so that if they need to have a puff they can do so in the designated area and in the comfort of their fellow smokers without disturbing the sanity of non-smokers! Such types already exist at international airports and malls and should be in place in JB or better still – the whole of Malaysia and I hope in the near future this problem will be curbed soon. I leave you with these cons of smoking that most smokers go through and you decide if that puff is worth it or not…

To serve, carefully cut each piece of pastry in half through the middle to make 3 thin pieces. Place one piece in the centre of each plate and top it off with some of the cream mixture. Repeat the process with the remaining cream and raspberry and layer each piece with the final glazed piece of pastry. Dust with icing sugar and serve.

Travel & Leisure

From OMAN with love By: Priya Manikam

I

n our last issue, do you remember reading about Hajar Ali’s feat on crossing the world’s largest sand desert starting from the North of the Empty Quarter and finishing in Salalah, Oman? We don’t blame you if you are not up to crossing the largest sand desert, but instead you may want to consider exploring other cities in Oman, doing all the touristy things.

Officially called the Sultanate of Oman, the 2.7 million populated country borders the UAE with rich historical culture and landscapes that are a must to be explored.

Oman is a neighbouring country of United Arab Emirates and you can either drive there or take a long distance bus from Dubai for almost 5 hours or you may fly there if you are not in the Gulf region. Most countries may get a Visa on Arrival and it would cost approximately Omani Rial (OR) 20 (about RM157.00) as a tourist, however, do double check if you are from one of the privileged countries prior to your travel. There is a lot to explore in Oman namely Mutrah (old Muscat) and Muscat, Wadi Shab Sinkhole, Nizwa forts, Dolphin watching, Salalah and Musandam dhow tour. In order to cover the whole of Oman, you would need a bigger budget and of course days! We did not have both and being there for the first time, it was just a 3days and 2nights exploring Mutrah and Muscat.

Travel & Leisure Tip! Avoid visiting Oman during the summer as the heat can be unbearable. Best time to visit would be end October – March. But do bring along a scarf or sweater.

32

Day 1: We arrived at Muscat International Airport and were greeted by a Mutrah Hotel rep (prior bookings are needed with an additional fee of OR10 one way) and were driven through a picturesque sight of mountains, fresh flowers, grand mosque and et cetera. Finally, we reached the hotel which is located in Mutrah, a city known as the old Muscat. We checked into the hotel for OR35.00 (RM275.00) a night including breakfast. The room was very spacious and clean and the staffs were friendly. We then wanted to explore Mutrah which is located at a coastal area. The Mutrah Souq (an

Arabic traditional market) is an attraction and a real treat for bargain hunters looking for souvenirs and do come prepared with your bargaining skills here. Besides buying the usual magnets and knickknacks, the Omani Halwa which is a sweet sticky dessert is a must buy and it comes nicely packed in a box for OR1 consisting 7 mini individually packed containers! Frankincense is also popularly sold and sought-after and it is quite worth to buy some back (if you need it of course) and if you have more cash to spare; the Khanjar which is a traditional Omani sword could be a precious treasure for keepsake.

www.waveslifestyle.com

Opposite the souq lies the beautiful Corniche beach and also the home to Mutrah Fishing Port. Along the Corniche, you can see many fish or dolphin icons and the Al Mirani fort is visible from this area. Mutrah area is beautiful both at night and in the day. You can spend the day or night by just walking and exploring places and looking around for souvenirs around this area.

Tip! There are many budget hotels found around the Mutrah souq and Corniche area with a starting price of OR20! So pick wisely and make the hotel rep show you the room first.

www.waveslifestyle.com

Day 2: Exploring Muscat city. It is wise to have a pre-booked tour in Oman or get a hired car as the local taxis are not metered and it can be a nightmare to argue with them especially when you don’t speak the local languages! Since we had a friend living in Oman, she kindly “loaned” us her driver to show us around. We then headed to Al Bustan area and had a sneak preview of the Al Bustan Palace Hotel which is now called the “Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz-Carlton Hotel”. The entire view is absolutely breathtaking and it was worth the drive and do make sure you make a trip here as well. After looking around, we were then driven through the Muscat Gate and headed to the famed Sultan Qaboos Al Alam Palace. The palace is a real beauty and it is surrounded by some of the forts and we were in total awe. Admission is free to enter the premises and you are allowed to take pictures on site. Thereafter, we ended the night by just going around for a free and easy ride admiring the city.

Day 3: Our final day we checked out from the hotel and headed to the airport. As we drove into Muscat city towards the airport, we managed to pass the famous Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and its grandeur is well appreciated and we were told that the Omanis are very proud of it. Finally we reached the airport and left with pleasant memories of Oman and would love to be back one day to fully explore it.

Tip! Tip: Do exercise modest dressing when visiting the mosque. Ladies will be required to cover their heads and men should avoid wearing any shorts.

Do those above words sound alien to you? The fact is, they are not and are quite simple and we are here to break them down and keep you informed on how you can make an extra buck online!

You work very hard for your money and it is natural that you want it to go as far as it can. We all want to stretch our money out as far as possible and get plenty of return on our dollars and cents. That’s right, there is such thing as a free meal once in awhile! Today, any consumer is able to enroll to participate in an online paid survey in which they are rewarded for giving their opinion. They usually pay in forms of cash or vouchers. Beware though, because not all sites are genuine and usually the sites that require a ‘deposit’ should ring some alarm bells! Since you do not need any special talents and are not required to learn any skills, so there are no risks involved and you can give it a try but bear in mind that you have no obligation to take part in online surveys if you are not interested. Usually, after the survey is completed, the manner in which you will be rewarded would depend on that particular site. Majority of websites will send a cheque to you for payment or some sites compensate through PayPal, gift certificates, drawing entries or prizes. Does it sound too good to be true? Fortunately, it is! Marketing firms across the world value your thoughts and need this feedback to provide products and services to benefit their market. Some active sites create a user account and you can accumulate points that you can exchange for gift certificates or prizes. After you reach a particular points level, you could receive a reward. So stop thinking about it and get listed under a survey panel and start getting paid! Learning & Motivation

What Boredom Can Tell Us?

By Rose Osman Known as Your Personal Motivator. She motivates people to transform their lives in personal growth, relationships and career since 2010 by coaching them about Energy and Love. Her passion as an Energy Coach is towards the transmutation of energies and inner healing of mind, emotion, physical and spiritual. “I am bored” is no longer a cursed and heavy expression these days. It is easy to hear people express their state of being bored to others compared to the good old days. They say it everywhere; in their social media status update, in the office or even at the moments of socializing with friends, colleagues or family. Retrospectively, we relate boredom with the state of living alone or zero connection with others. Think again, is it the actual cause? If zero connection between humans is the cause of boredom, why is it that more and more people feel boredom existing in places where people are connecting with each other? While coaching people to progress in life, I’ve seen many using boredom to express their need to change but when they do nothing about it, boredom keeps coming back to them. Being in the state of boredom is a sign of life within us which have stopped making progress. The flow of life’s energies within us has become stagnant for a long period and this is against the nature of life itself. Here are three signs why boredom appears in our life:

2. It is a sign to make Progress and Changes in life. In Law of Life; if it doesn’t grow, it dies. Boredom appears to tell us that an early ‘death’ is taking a toll on our inner spirits such as courage, creativity and soul. As a human, we must grow in life. We certainly can’t be stuck in one moment of life and hope that things will change by itself. Life is our effort to create and transform from time to time. Hence, we have to grow from one point and reach another point whether we succeed or not.

3. Lack of Passion and Zero Purpose.

1. Living in the same old routines for too long. Same routines could mean many things including same job scopes, same arguments, and same problems that we have from day to day until it turns into years or when we are stuck in the same ‘negative’ feelings for a long period. When we are stuck in the same routines for too long, some of the energies within may no longer serve us and it seeks for transmutation. It desires to transmute but can only be done by us that also triggers the sensation of boredom. It’s simply telling us ‘Please Transform Me’! An example is when one holds on to anger or unsolved problems for a long period. At some point of life, the anger wants to be healed and problems want to be solved. The feeling of boredom will disappear once the person treat his/ her anger or give solutions to the unsolved problems.

Passion, purpose, greatness and sense of completeness are related. A life without passion is a life without a purpose. A life without a purpose is a life that has no direction. When you live a life that has no direction, you become someone that you are not meant to be, work in a job that is not meant for you, and go to destinations that aren’t your destinations to reach. When you are living somebody else’s life and not yours, greatness in life is never going to happen. Since everyone is meant to achieve greatness and completeness, boredom is one of the many disapproved feelings that appear just to tell us that we are drifting off from our true paths. Boredom appears from within us and the best way to heal boredom is to find out what makes us feel bored in the first place. While some conventional people believe it appears when we have nothing to do in our lives, achievers believe differently because there are countless things we can do in our lives. However, the choice to act or not are completely up to us. Boredom acts as an indicator in navigating progresses in our lives. It is triggered by our higher SELF and is telling us as always; “It is time to create something different with passion, live with a purpose, progress and write our own greatness in life”. www.waveslifestyle.com
