DEDICATION

For his 26 years of service to Wayland, Pillars 2006 is Dedicated to:
------~------------------------------------
How exciting that Wayland is dedicating this year's Yearbook to Mike. What a great way to recognize his many years of dedication to Wayland and its community!! I know that he will be as proud and excited by this honor as I am.
Lisa Schneider The dedication of this year's Yearbook is definitely very well deserved. It is hard to believe that the first year my dad taught at Wayland, I was only two years old! Years later, as a student at Wayland, I was fortunate enough to have my dad for two years of Spanish. As most of Mr. Schneider's students quickly learn, I found out that my dad truly has a passion for and is dedicated to what he does. I am so proud of him and couldn't think of a better person to recognize this year.
Beth Ratajczak (Schneider) '96
MR. MICHAEL SCHNEIDER H'86 I am so pleased that the Yearbook this year is dedicated to Mr. Schneider. He more than deserves this honor after years of dedicated teaching and service to the community. I remember when I first talked to him about teaching here (so long ago that I don't want to remember an exact year); I was impressed with his experiences, knowledge, and enthusiasm. He seemed to be just the right person to teach here and he appeared at just the right time! My initial hunch was right. He not only strengthened the language department as a whole, but later led the way to a completely changed Spanish curriculum. His drive to incorporate TPRS in our teaching has benefited all of the Spanish students. He was also supportive in the re-introduction of the Classics to the curriculum. The Wayland Academy community and his language students are so much the better because Mr. Schneider came to campus that fall day many years ago. Thank you for all of your great work - both inside and outside of the classroom.
Joseph Lennertz H'86 Academic Dean & Spanish
2006 Mike Schneider is more than a former colleague; he is my friend , my favorite squash opponent - and my former Spanish teacher! There's a story there. Several years ago, I asked Mike if it would bother him if I sat in on his class so that I could learn some Spanish. He said, "I don't know, but we can try it. " Thus began my year in Spanish I Honors. In that year, I learned first-hand what a wonderful teacher Mike is. His classroom was fun and full of energy, and the other students and I learned a lot of Spanish. But Mike is more than just a good classroom teacher; he's also one of those guys who is committed to the students in other parts of their lives. Any time I attend a Wayland event - from sports to fine arts - Mike is there supporting the kids or working in some capacity. Wayland is lucky to have such a dedicated teacher, and I am lucky to have him as a friend.
Roger VanHaren H'84 Faculty Emeritus 1974-1998 I have known Mike Schneider as both a teacher and a colleague. His enthusiasm for the language made it so much fun to learn Spanish. He knew how to push students to excel, even if they didn't want to step out of their comfort zone. He has been a great role model for me, willing to share his expert advice whenever needed, especially in serious conversations. On the other hand, he is always ready to joke around. He has helped so many people, making him a perfect recipient for this honor.

The Field Hockey team learned a lot this year. The girls played well together and increased their skill level significantly. The leadership of our seniors: Amy, Sam, Megan, Jackie, & Tricia will be missed. This year's team was led by Megan Leigl, MVP. Zuzana Gajduskova, our MIP, grew tremendously this year. Our Champion of Character was Natalie Machkovech. Thanks to our captains, Megan, Jackie, and Sam, and thanks to all for a great year.

Overall the girl's tennis team had quite a successful season. The varsity players were a force to be reckoned with and demonstrated great sportsmanship and skill both on and off the court. The following varsity players gained recognition for their achievements this season: Molly Doty, MVP; Pia Strecker (hailing from Germany), MIP; and Breanne Rehfeldt, Champion of Character. Molly Doty and Maddie Mindling also deserve recognition for making it to the state sectional meet in Whitewater. The JV squad worked really hard this season as well, and each player reached new personal goals. One player in particular stood out in the crowd. Lark Jackson received the JV Champion of Character award for her leadership and winning attitude. Great work girls! I'm looking forward to next year.

The football team had over 40 participants on this year's team allowing for some JV competition to be held. The JV team won both of its games which is a bright light for the future. The varsity team finished 6-3 and took second place in the Indian Trails Conference. The Big Red played for the conference championship, a game which it lost to the eventual champions Alden Hebron. Wayland also had two first team all-conference performers, QB Rick Langman and DB Loran Miller. Also, two players were second team all-conference, Levi Walton at DB and Steve Boucher at OL. Overall the players played with intensity and class, which made this year very enjoyable.
The 2005 Boys Varsity occer team finished 4th out of 11 teams in the MCC after inishing in dead last last year. his team was undefeated in all on-tournament games at George obb field this season, and ayland soccer had its first inning record in the conference n several years, finishing 4-3-3. t was the first time in a long, long ime that we beat Heritage hristian (who was Top Ten in the tate only a few years ago); we hut them out 1-0 in what went to riot as the greatest soccer victory f which Coach Graham has ever een a part. We had no yellow ards in conference games this ear. It all came down to the final arne against Kenosha Christian; e won the game 1-0 becoming nly one of four teams to finish ith a winning record in the onference.

The 2005 JV Boys Soccer earn was competitive throughout he season. If these young men ut the necessary effort into mproving their skills during the ffseason while maintaining elfless, team-first attitudes, they n become the foundation for a inning varsity team in future

Our volleyball season went fast, but it was enjoyable. Though we had a few rough spots we ended up 2nd in the conference. The girls worked hard, and played as a team. This has been the most close-knit team I've coached. There were so many proud moments. One specific moment was when we were playing Fall River for our regional game. Fall River was ranked higher, and believed they would quickly beat us. We ended up taking one game, and had another that was close. We will miss the seniors on this team: Kana Idetsu, Cait Randerson, Ashley Pahl, and captain Margaret Rhatican, who kept the team's spirit high. It will be very hard to fill these shoes!
The JV Volleyball team had over twenty members in 2005. The size of the team allowed us to play a lot of scrimmage in practice to hone the girls' skill, and we had a strong, competitive season as a result. Mary Miller was MVP, and Christine Hamman and Jenny Guo tied for MIP. Andrea Slosser was our Champion of Character, and her energy and dedication on and off the court meant the world to our team. Thank you all for a wonderful season.
Front Row: Abigael Froelich, Christine Hamman, Jennifer Guo, Katherine Shank, Grace Aguilar, Hayley Skreens, Andrea Slosser, Byse Martinez, Amberly Ritchie Middle Row: Kii Kasten, Lindsay Cieslik, Whitney Teuscher, Catherine Corbin, Julia Kim, Dana Webber, Karlie Aubry, Mary Miller, Coach Lake Back Row: Abigail Tentinger, SamGina Kerns, April Jordan, Sunny Boudeva, Christine Pryme, Chistina Galor, Jacqueline Barron
CHEERLEADlNG The girls on the pep squad worked hard to ignite school spirit at sporting events this fall. They attended all of the soccer games and many of the games of the other sports as well. They made up their own cheers and had the challenge of having to make up cheers for sports like field hockey and volleyball, where organized cheering is seldom done. Their crowning achievement was making up a routine for the school fight song which they performed at the Spirit Week Pep Rally. I am proud of all of them all and the effort that that they put into getting the crowd fired up.
Front Row: Ashley Walton, Tiffany Miskimmins Back Row: Jillian Jackson, Epiphany Burgess, Sarah Murphy
FRESHMEN BOYS BASKETBALL The Freshmen Basketball team had a great season. Although we did not win as many games as we would have liked, we did finish the season with a rousing last-second win over St. Lawrence Seminary. We were anchored by the solid playing of captains Austin Williams and Tyler Hill who was also our Champion of Character. We also saw tremendous individual improvement from many players as well. Both the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams have a bright future based on the solid play by the Freshmen this year.
Front Row: Juan Orozco, Suk-Hyun Kim, Young-11 Kim, Adam (Country) Bunkowski, Steven McCaskell Back Row: Tyler Hill, Damaar Purifoy, Brendan Weinstein , Coach Keller, Youn (Daniel) Hur, Jason Crivolio, Austin Williams
VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL

The Boys Basketball team ended up with a 3-18 record; this was a learning season. Led in scoring by the seniors Levi, who was MVP, and Gerry, Wayland was in almost every game we played. In the last 12 games of the season, the leading scorer was sophomore guard, A.J ., who was MIP along with Josh. Steve and Brandon were our Champions of Character. Wayland's basketball season was highlighted by an upset win in the Bradley Center against conference rival Kenosha Christian Life (KCL). KCL had defeated the Big Red earlier in the season and also are a Division 3 team (Wayland is Division 4). With all of the students and faculty on hand, however, the Wayland players knew that something special was about to happen, and it did. Wayland defeated KCL 74-63. With the players working hard in the offseason, Wayland's opponents should be wary of the Big Red for years to come. Go Big Red!
V BOYS BASKETBALL The JV boys' basketball team finished the season with a 10-7 record. At times the boys played with great intensity and teamwork, and those moments were a real joy to watch. With two winning JV seasons, if these young men keep working hard in the offseason, they will contribute to a bright future for Wayland basketball.
Front Row: Joseph Graham, Adam Benavides, Rhys Lockard, Oscar Cumpiano, Brennan Fitzgerald, Channing Harris, Kyo Hyun Park Back Row: Scott Fitgerald, Rui Guo, Nicolas Schaalma, Coach Osvald, Benjamin Rabata, Kyle Brown, Jei Hwan Yoo, Joschka Zimmermann

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL The Wayland Academy JV Girls Basketball team had only 8 full time members to play in the 2005-06 school year. Although small in size and lacking in experience, every girl demonstrated 150% effort throughout the season. Tina Galor was named Champion of Character for he r effort, progress, and enthusiasm for the sport of basketball.

SWIMMING Swim team had another great season--this is the second year in a row for a winning season, 6-1. We also expanded to 40+ members this year, which bodes well for our future sucess. The season culminated with a new school record for the 200 freestyle relay team. Samuel Radford, Kun-Ho Yoon, Ricardo Ruiz-Maza, and Michael Sirianni pulled off an exciting race against Martin Luther and then smashed their own new record at sectionals. The new record is 1:41.98. Sam R. was our MVP, Mike S. was MIP, and Lindsay C. was our Champion of Character. Thanks to everyone for providing focus, energy, and enthusiasm.

AMY ALLURED
To my family: Thank you for your undying support, respect, and contribution to my experience. Mom and Dad, I know it wasn't easy for you, but everything you've done means a lot to me. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have been able to have this, so thank you. Ethan, I continue to look up to you and am so grateful for your advice and general presence. To the generous Wayland Faculty: My inspiration as teachers, supervisors, and coaches, I have been forever changed just by being in your presence. You have shown such respect and belief in me that it would be impossible for me not to reflect it. I have grown immeasurably as a result or your guidance. I hope that those who come after me will realize what they have and take advantage of it! Thank you for everything. To my friends: This is it! Thank you for letting me be me, no questions asked. It's been a wonderful two years at Wayland with your involvement in my life. I wish you all the best of luck in everything. I don't know what I would have done with out you! Thank you for the team time, the nights on duty, and, of course the weekends!
JACOB BARSY
NICHOLAS COLEY "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." -Soren Kierkegaard "I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life." -George Burns "The only true happiness comes from squandering ourselves for a purpose. " -William Cowper
. Lord said to me, have a greater task for you, my servant. "' -Isaiah 49:6
1body needs a Sally or a Diane to heat up their lives. ;ch ist toll! Javoll! vas mulling what to write, I realized that it would be a very bad thing indeed to say anything fie to my friends. Simply, I would leave people out, and it would be bad. So rather I want to say thank you everybody at Wayland and elsewhere who has made high school and life better, more ~sting, or simply more enlightening. I have met some incredibly awesome people at Wayland, am indebted to many for the things I have learned. Included amongst the incredibly awesome e are many of my teachers.
Jho would have thought that this moment has arrived, the moment of my graduation? Over all being here, in a country 1at is not my own, in a language different from my own. My parents told me a long time ago: "Son, it's going to be ver ::>od for you to go abroad one year, on top of learning a new language." I was afraid of it, but I suppose it's normal, so om your family, your friends, things that you know in general. But when I came here, I realized that I didn't have to be 路raid of anything, and I met a lot of nice people that have made me feel like a family, in such a way that I have almost rgotten I was far from my home at all. In the good and bad moments they have been with me, supporting me. Thanks I of my partners for being there, for helping me to improve. Also, I give thanks to the teachers, because without them I )u}d not have been able to learn anything, always correC;ting me, helping me to improve in every respect. Thanks Mr. !nnertz for being my mentor in the most important year for me. Thanks to my family, even though they were far, they !re always supporting me. And finally, thanks to my friends in Spain, for not forgetting me at any time. I enjoyed a lot re and I hope it never changes.

Did you lose your feelings be I found them for you. Hold on I'm getting on 151. Oww my hip hurts, you're too far away. BENJAMIN KROEGER From the moment we are born we are destined to die. The events characterizing our lives become meaningless as we try to give substance to something so transitory as existence. Even in our dreams we're so afraid to let go of what is familiar. And so in this way we draw out our course from day to day, drinking from the River of Life, giving birth to misconceptions of purpose. Life, rendered short by circumstance, losing significance to convention ... it becomes incidental to the progress of the universe. The heat from our breath carries energy short of words, sending signals into the past. And everyone we meet becomes a silhouette, a figure we say we'll never forget. It is the greatest disappointment to learn that everyone is replacable, that no-one is unique to the eye of the Universe. But give us power so that we may walk in the Valley of Shadows without fear, led astray by reason and doubt. Who amoung us will persist against the odds of insignificance? That life is a most curious coincidence? Look beyond the walls we build for ourselves and see that we are common in essence as in form. Let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered upon the face of the whole earth. And let us persist, until there is no death, but peace, so that we might destroy those native preconceptions limiting us from immorality, our place amoung the heavens. So be it, and thus as it has been said and confessed by every tounge upon the earth. For we are a blessed race, and here rendered I see my people in nothing but the greatest love, cast in brotherhood and unity.
TAE YOON KYUNG 'My recompense is thanks, that's all, Yet my good will is great, though the gift small. '(William Shakespeare) Living through 3 years at Wayland Academy, I found so many people to thank with all my soul and heart. I thank the faculty, my friends, and the school itself. By instructing and scolding me, faculty provided me a great sense of morality, and intellect. They also taught me to have the right vision toward my life. Friends in Wayland are great people and will be unforgettable in my life. In spite of my short time at Wayland, they helped me to live through tough high school years and have shown me a true value of amiability. Wayland Academy gave me an opportunity to show off my talent and meet incredibly great people. I thank the school for its support in making me change from a child to a man.

Mr. Joseph Lenner for his support. Dr. Keely Lake for h tireless hours of editi without which most your names would c spelled wrong. The Students and Faculty of Wayland Academy especially < those who volunteen pictures to our page:
JEFF RAUSCHER This year's Yearbook Class has been a blast! It has been my favorite this year. It is a great use of time. It's easy, fun, exciting, and I would like to do this class every year.
MS. BOUCHER ADVISOR The staff members of Pillars 2006 have put in a lot of hours, pulled out most of their hair and gotten carpel-tunnel syndrome in their right index fingers from taking so many pictures. If your name is spelled wrong, I apologize; it is my fault, it won't happen again. As you have discovered by now, this yearbook has a hard cover which should please the majority of you. I hope you're happy.
Mr. Jamie Bogner, o Jostens representativ who made sure we knew what we were doing and tried to keep us on task.
TO THE JUNIOR CLASS: Next year you will be seniot Please take the summer to think about what you would like to say in your senior quote, what pictures you would like to include on yOL senior page, what and to whom you would like to will future generations, and whc your class is most likely to succeed, etc. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
