STATE OF THE ACADEMY

WAYLAND IS AMAZING—AS YOU WANT IT TO BE by JASON WARNICK, head of school

A

lumni, parents, grandparents, and friends of Wayland Academy—I want to express our deep gratitude for your belief in Wayland and your steadfast support in every way. Each year, during my homecoming address, I find myself echoing the sentiment of one of my mentors, who used to say: “Our School will be as amazing as our alumni want it to be.” It's clear that you want Wayland to be extraordinary. Your commitment is palpable, and it inspires all of us on campus to cultivate a community of excellence. Last year, our alumni, constituents, and friends contributed over $1 million through annual giving initiatives, in addition to well over $2 million in capital giving and bequests. This achievement is nothing short of incredible and serves as a testament to your dedication. Your belief in the Academy is the driving force behind our growth. It allows us to introduce innovative academic programs, attract and retain outstanding faculty and staff, and provide enriching experiences in the arts, athletics, and community life. In 2020, during our virtual homecoming, we shared our optimism for Wayland's future despite a census of approximately 75 boarding students on campus. It was evident that the foundation laid by faculty, staff, administrators, and my predecessor, Joe Lennertz H`86, combined with the enduring love and dedication of our alumni, the resolve and character of our trustees, and the quality of our students, would see us through the crisis and make us stronger. In fall 2021, as we emerged from the pandemic, our enrollment remained steady, with 127 students enrolled and our optimism intact. Today, Wayland Academy is a thriving, vibrant community with 195 students enrolled! Such growth is a rarity when, across the country, many schools grapple with existential enrollment challenges, but not Wayland. Our incredible community ensures our continued success. 4

Greetings

In October, we celebrated the outstanding contributions of our outgoing Board Chair Dave Larson `71. Dave has been an exceptional champion and leader for the Academy, and I am personally indebted to his leadership and friendship (see page 8). Dave and his wife, Linda, embody the essence of Wayland: a commitment to excellence rooted in love. Our 2023 Commencement ceremony was a heartwarming experience that included eloquent words from our speaker, Tyri Schiek Centanni ‘71, intellect reflected in the messages from our student leaders, accomplishments celebrated, an impressive list of college acceptances, and most importantly, the love and bonds among classmates, friends, and family. Commencement was joyous but bittersweet, as our community is exceptionally close. We strive to produce independent and interdependent young people. We maintain that this is essential in fostering connections and mutual support in our community. The friendships formed within the blocks of University Avenue to Franklin Street are some of the strongest and most genuine relationships we have known. In the 2023–2024 academic year, we remain committed to delivering a traditional education enriched with innovation. Our new signature programs in media studies, experiential environmental science, student success, student support, and mental health and wellness continue to thrive. We are also excited about the growth of the Summer Experience at Wayland Academy, which began with about 25 participants and is set to expand in summer 2024. We have expanded our athletic offerings. We are witnessing increased interest and heightened competition in rowing, fencing, lacrosse, and our powerlifting teams. This fall marked the return of American football to Brown Field, and it has been a successful first year. We take pride in our athletic programs, athletes, and coaches. Our fine and performing arts programs continue to thrive, providing students with

vibrant experiences on stage in Lindsay, throughout the state, and online. We hope some of you had the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful production of Shrek the Musical on campus. The performance was met with rave reviews and recordbreaking ticket sales. I find it challenging to contain my enthusiasm and pride for Wayland Academy, its current state, and its promising future. Over the past few years, I've emphasized our approach to crisis management with the challenges posed by the pandemic and hybrid learning. While navigating crises, we have also embraced change management, mindful of Jack Welch’s advice: “Change before you have to.” Crisis and change may persist, but now we embark on a new phase: growth management. Growth brings opportunities and challenges, and we remain committed to providing excellent education, supporting our teachers and staff, and securing the resources necessary to ensure the success of our students and employees. We are constantly navigating this challenging terrain. We have made significant strides in increasing student opportunities and faculty and staff support, but we acknowledge there's more work ahead. Jim `71 and Susan Janik's generous gift gave name to Wayland Academy’s field house—Janik Field House. Upgrades and renovations to the facility provided new locker rooms and other structural improvements while providing essential funding for operations. We are grateful for Jim and Susan’s incredible support for this project as well as their invitation for others to support Wayland student-athletes by inquiring about exciting naming opportunities now available in the Janik Field House. The monumental Wayland Made Campaign continues to engage support, with over $9.5 million raised toward our $10 million goal. We are fast approaching the finish line. The success of this campaign is a remarkable

achievement. Burnham Hall remains a vibrant campus center, a draw for enrollment, and a valuable asset in terms of faculty housing. It has truly been a game-changer. Our students are at the heart of our community. They represent our future. They are dreamers, leaders, and learners. They have inherited a complex and challenging society, but thrive as they succeed, struggle, learn, and grow. We are immensely proud of our students and our accomplishments. We are excited about our growth. We have big dreams, and we are just getting started. This is the current state of the academy. You share in all that we accomplish. Your support and belief make Wayland Academy’s successes possible. Our community is amazing, just as you want it to be. Thank you.

Honoring Our Outgoing Board Chair ing discussions during meetings. He let everyone have their say, but kept things moving forward. In terms of demeanor, he was unruffled and unflappable. He approached problem solving with a total ‘can do’ attitude.” Dave’s involvement and service to Wayland began in the late 1960s as a four-year boarding student. Originally from Davenport, Iowa, he graduated Cum Laude in 1971, and during the 1980s, Dave started volunteering with the Wayland Alumni Board, attending events throughout the ’90s and when he could in the 2000s, when he wasn't living abroad.

uring Homecoming Weekend 2023, the Wayland Academy community recognized the contributions of outgoing Board Chair David C. Larson. A member of the class of 1971, Dave was presented the 2023 Distinguished Service Citation—the highest honor that Wayland Academy can bestow upon an individual. Dave joined the Board of Trustees in 2013, and since 2017, he has served as board chair, navigating Wayland through some of the most thoughtprovoking and rewarding years in its most recent history. These challenges included a transition in school leadership, the COVID pandemic (which held many financial challenges), and a $10 million capital campaign. “Dave has been a true champion of the Academy for many years, and I am personally indebted to him, as is the entire Wayland Academy community” says Jason Warnick, Wayland’s Head of School since 2020. “Dave had his own distinct style as Board Chair,” added fellow alum and Trustee Will Luedke `70. “He opened each board meeting with some humor and lighter fare to put everyone at ease for the upcoming two days of meetings. He ran a tight ship in terms of direct8

Greetings

After Wayland, Dave attended the College of William and Mary and earned a Bachelor of Science degree, double majoring in psychology and physics. He then received a B.S. in industrial engineering, as well as a Master of Business Administration in finance, from the University of Iowa. Thus began his 37-year journey in the corporate world at Deere & Company, where he specialized in manufacturing and product engineering, including corporate strategy and domestic and global business development. Throughout his career, Dave’s work took him and his family around the country and the world, moving nearly a dozen times. They eventually ended up in Moscow, where he worked as the managing director for John Deere in Russia and the 11 other countries that make up the former Soviet Union. Dave left John Deere in 2014 and joined the faculty at Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, where he’s taught for the last nine years. Dave and his wife, Linda, now live in Florida and enjoy traveling, including vacations abroad and visits to see

their four children in the Midwest or to Beaver Dam to share their time and talent with Wayland. Dave also enjoys fly fishing and golfing. In addition to his service to Wayland, Dave supports several of philanthropic organizations, including the United Way, YMCA, American Chamber of Commerce, and the University of Iowa, and he currently serves on the boards of Reves Center for International Studies, Genesis Health System, and College of William and Mary. Dave is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Tennessee. For the last ten years, along with his Board service, Dave has made it a priority to reconnect with as many Wayland classmates, faculty, staff, and friends of Wayland as possible. He says that, over the years, reconnecting with those people, memories, and his days at Wayland have become increasingly important. Dave will remain on the Board of Trustees. Fellow trustee Shelley Greenwood, Wayland Class of 1973, was appointed his successor and began her first term as board chair in October.

above Dave Larson `71 and his wife, Linda, returned to campus in October for Homecoming. They’re pictured with fellow Trustee Will Luedke `70 as they await direction for the annual all-alumni photo.

“ Over the last several years, all of us at the Academy received an education in strategy, management, and leadership from our board chair. And while Dave is a master of corporate and institutional strategy, it is with the understanding and the teaching that our values, relationships, compassion, and humanity will ultimately determine our ability to meet the objective. That is likely the most important lesson of all.” —head of school jason Warnick

Honor Roll of Donors Elizabeth W. Parker `72, P`06, `08 board of trustees Wow! What a year for Wayland! Thank you for your part in the success of our fundraising. Our school counts on these contributions to move Wayland Academy forward in its mission to prepare students for college and beyond, providing an experience that, as many of you know, is transformative. Here is a special shout out to those who donated their treasure. Thanks, too, to those who donated their time, serving on committees, volunteering at activities, and reaching out to classmates and Wayland alumni in their area. Others, still, put their talents at the service of the Academy lending expertise in construction, legal matters, coaching, speaking at Chapel—you name it. You are part of a community effort. We are all Wayland Made! Thank you all.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS The 47th Annual Spring Gala & Auction, held on Saturday, April 15, in Lindsay Auditorium, was a huge success. There were 220 people in attendance at the gala, which featured a gourmet strolling buffet, a Golden Ticket raffle, and a silent and live auction. Donnie Bleich, from Wilkinson Auction & Realty, donated his time to be our auctioneer for the live auction. Peter Sensenbrenner `71 once again led the bidding for our initiative—Investing in Innovation—supporting media studies, environmental science, student success, and athletics. This year’s Gala & Auction raised $225,000! The Online Holiday Auction and the Big Red Golf Tourney were successful in their second year. In December 2022, the Online Holiday Auction raised $12,000 for the Academy Fund. In June 2023, the Big Red Golf Tourney—held again at Old Hickory Golf Club—grew this year to 88 golfers and 15 volunteers, raising $13,000 for the Academy Fund. We thank all who attended and supported our events— donating something for the auctions or golf raffle prizes, being a sponsor, participating in the auctions, or giving of your time, talent, and treasure to support the events—thus supporting Wayland Academy.

our support of our Wayland Made campaign has helped to ensure that the next generation of students and their teachers will thrive tomorrow. Our female students have now spent a year in our stunning new girls dorm, Burnham Hall, and all of our students have benefited from the revitalization of Discovery Hall. Additionally, we are thrilled to continue increasing our Endowment. Building this vital permanent fund means that Wayland can continue providing excellence in education. It also means providing scholarships to ensure our student community remains diverse and dynamic. We thank the following alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and community friends who have contributed to our Wayland Made campaign as of November 1, 2023. Please join them with your support. Your gift matters! wayland.org/wayland-made

WAYLAND ALUMNI VETERANS

John Kreuz `68, jd, mba people, including the Vietnamese woman he loved. This journal was misplaced just days before he was transferred to his final duty station. Interestingly, the journal was returned to him in 2020, inspiring his new 500-page book.

His last posting was in Saigon—a job with the highest turnover rate, due to the psychological toll and nature of the work. As Acting Officer in Charge of the Army’s morgue, he had the gruesome task of washing and re-clothing the bodies of more than 400 American soldiers before they were shipped home to their loved ones.

Academy with instilling him with the leadership, academic, and social skills that helped him rise through the ranks of the military and succeed in life. It also gave him the work ethic and discipline to cope with the stress of the Vietnam War.

John surprisingly volunteered to extend his tour—during a time when many were fleeing the country to avoid enlistment—in an effort to stay with his local love. However, the Army denied his request, and after a heart-wrenching goodbye, he boarded the plane for home.

As a four-year student at Wayland, John admits he wasn’t much of an athlete. He recalls being dubbed “the slowest bipod on campus” by Coach Sol Wolfe `34. He didn’t attend dances, nor did he rush to Pickard Hall for meals. At Wayland, John kept his head down, did what he was told—OK, maybe there was the occasional prank—and focused on his studies.

“It felt like my lowest point—like I had nothing to come home to,” John recalled. However, John realized soon enough, that his life was just beginning to open up. Upon his return to the U.S., John applied to Michigan State University, and, with knowledge and study skills acquired at Wayland, he tested out of more than half of his college courses, earning him enough credits to graduate in just two years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and later a Master of Business Administration and analyst certification from the Wharton

After graduating from Wayland, John volunteered for the Army and reported to Fort Benning in Georgia for basic training. His oneyear tour in Vietnam began in June 1969. While abroad, John kept a journal that he updated with the details of his 300+ days in combat: the missions, the geography, the

School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania. He was admitted to membership in Mensa International in 1985. In 2005, at age 50, John became the oldest person ever admitted to law school at Marquette University, impressing law faculty and students alike with his outstanding score on the Law School Admissions Test. He earned his Doctor of Law degree in just two years. For many years, he was a corporate pension fund manager. From 2002-2012, he was a legal and financial advisor to the NFL Players Union. In 2020, John earned a specialization in biostatistics from Johns Hopkins University. Today, he is a member of the Bar in Wisconsin, Illinois, and his home state of Nevada. Today, the Law Office of John L. Kreuz concentrates primarily on estate planning and taxation. John is a founding sponsor of the National Museum of the United States Army, which opened in Washington D.C. in November 2020 and has spoken to veterans on topics such as coming home, coping with loss, and forgiveness. Although these topics are difficult to address, he finds comfort in knowing he is not alone and that by talking about his experiences, he is setting an example for younger veterans. When he returned to Wayland for his 50th class reunion in 2018, John hadn’t seen most of his classmates in five decades. He spoke with just one about the Vietnam War. Now, five years later, he has become more comfortable talking about the topic, and at his 55th class reunion this fall, he shared candid war stories with his 1968 classmates. Today, John and his wife, Joyce, live in Las Vegas. The couple has been married for 48 years. They share two children and two grandchildren. John’s advice for today’s students? “Treat high school as a job, and make it the most important thing in your life.”

K

K ate F reeman J ansky `70 says it felt natural to serve her country as the granddaughter of two world war veterans.

working for the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, she realized the advantages of veterans’ healthcare and was inspired to take a commission in the Air Force.

Kate was a quiet day student at Wayland in the late 1960s and enjoyed the solitude of the mile-and-a-half bike ride or walk to campus. When she wasn’t at swim or fencing practice, she could usually be found working in the Discovery Hall biology lab.

She served for two years before returning to Salt Lake City, where she continued to work as an intensive care nurse. It was during this time that she met her ski coach, Marty Hall, and moved to Vermont to join the U.S. Cross Country Ski Team from 1979-1981.

“My curriculum at Wayland was very science heavy. I was encouraged by Mr. Meyer to do independent research isolating DNA before it was in our textbooks,” Kate recalled. “Mr. Hansgen taught physics, which was initially a struggle, but through the help of my classmates I realized I loved both math and science. This definitely led me to pursue a career in the medical field.”

“The demands of physical training and success of winning were very motivating, but it fed not half my psyche.”

Kate went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and then moved to Utah to work because she loved to ski. While

“ Serving in the military allowed me to serve my country, protect those I love, and help others both at home and in foreign lands. The flexibility and grit I learned at Wayland and in the military allowed me to persevere through many difficult life situations, knowing I had the education and stamina to succeed.”

1

Kate retired from the Army Nurse Corps as a lieutenant colonel after 20 years of service and then worked an additional 10 years as a certified registered nurse anesthesiologist— an advanced practice nurse who specializes in and administers anesthesia.

When a mentor suggested she would excel as a nurse anesthesiologist, she decided to return to school. “The best route at the time was through the Army, so I resigned my Air Force commission, traded jets for jeeps, and became an Army captain in 1983.” Kate earned a master’s degree in health science from the U.S. Army School for Anesthesia for Nurse Corps Officers in collaboration with Texas Wesleyan University, Fort Worth. Her career as a nurse anesthesiologist took her all over world. While stationed in Honduras, her medical team provided dental, veterinary, medical, and surgical care to locals in remote villages. During Desert Storm, they provided similar services to Bedouins in Saudi Arabia and were under fire at times in Iraq. “Looking back, it was a struggle to live in austere conditions, and at the same time, it was a wonderful experience. Life in the desert was stripped down to only what you needed. We were all over there working together for a common goal, which was supporting our troops. And that’s what was most important to me.”

2

After returning from Desert Storm Kate met her husband, Russ, and two stepsons.

3

She found her post-military career to be a different kind of public service—one that proved rewarding as well. Driven by passion for advocacy and education, Kate served on various committees and boards and held several roles in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, including a term as its president. Over the years, Kate and Russ lived in several states, including Washington and Colorado. Their son together, Daniel, followed in his parents’ footsteps and is currently working in counterintelligence in Japan. Kate and Russ retired to Florida in 2021, where they enjoy golf, Pilates, and involvement in the Italian culture. They also enjoy traveling and recently returned from a trip to Europe with their nephews. She credits Wayland with introducing her to the basics of the French, German, and Italian languages, which she uses often in her travels.

Meet Scott Millar `82, msw, msp

“My time spent as a dorm proctor and helping various faculty prepared me to be a leader and nurtured my desire to serve others. Whether it was my first Army enlistment as a combat medic and practical nurse, or as the heavy weapons team leader and unit armorer during my second stint, I always had peers and subordinates approaching me for assistance and advice. Now, later in life, the values I learned at Wayland make me an effective social worker.” Today, Scott lives in St. Louis and is the lead residential case manager with Veterans Community Project, a nonprofit that provides transitional tiny homes for homeless veterans. Trained in counseling and conflict resolution, he also assists veterans in their transition from military service to civilian life—especially those facing joblessness, suicide, PTSD, or military sexual assault/trauma recovery. Scott enlisted in the Army as a combat medic in the summer of 1983, spending three months in Korea’s demilitarized zone. After returning to the U.S. in 1985, he then reenlisted to attend the Army’s Practical Nurse

Course. He was assigned to one of the last MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) units in the Army and was deployed to Honduras and Bolivia. He left the Army in 1991, and in 2010, at age 45, he enlisted again under the “needs of the Army” as an infantryman. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2012-13 and left active duty the following year. He served in the Army Reserves for an additional three years. Following his military career, Scott earned his Bachelor of Science in family studies and human services at Kansas State University and his Master of Social Work and Master of Social Policy from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. Scott returns to campus every five years for his “big” class reunions to reconnect with his former classmates, teachers, and those formative years at Wayland Academy.

“ Perhaps my favorite Wayland memories are from the years I spent in Wayland Hall. I can remember my roommate, Andy Kaftan `82, wrapping his head in an Ace bandage, taping pointy Spock ears to the sides, and covering his eyes with razor-thin punk rock sunglasses. He used to run around terrifying the other kids on our floor! That’s just one example of the shenanigans and fun that made life in the dorm feel like family. There are far too many to write about here!”

NEWS & NOTES Jody Brotherston `50 received the Jacques Benedict Honorary Journalism Award from the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art in Denver, Colorado, in September 2023 for her book Arthur Byne’s Diplomatic Legacy. Her first children’s book, Lucky Crosses the Atlantic Ocean on Queen Mary 2, was published in January 2023 and is available from Barnes & Noble. David Spengler `52 was recognized in the Wisconsin State Journal for his collection of Ho-Chunk Nation artifacts—200-year-old portraits, handwoven baskets, carved wooden tools—an interest born from his childhood in Menasha and two parents who were collectors. He has always believed that as Ho-Chunk artifacts, the items belong to members of the Nation. An article about the installation of the Ho-Chunk Clan Circle sculpture at UW-Madison inspired David to offer the pieces to the Ho-Chunk Nation Museum and Cultural Center in Tomah. Jon Stillman `56 and his wife Jane live in Stillwater, Minnesota. They are very active in Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation. In the winter, they go to Amelia Island, Florida. Their son, Toby, works in international public health and is based in Washington, D.C. Their daughter, Heidi, works in theatre and lives in Evanston, Illinois. Jon and Jane have five grandchildren ranging in age from 11 to 20.

The Great Class of 1970 met for a mini-reunion in Grand Lake, CO. There were three days of fun including “Wisconsin Night” with beer and brats at Maud Debenham and Trace Galloway’s lovely mountain home. Other activities included golf, hiking, horseback riding, and a pontoon boat tour of the lakes. They had a great time reconnecting and getting to know classmates’ spouses. They look forward to the next gettogether. As Mimi Brown’s cheer goes: “Here’s to you, here’s to me. We’re the class of `70. He gets much joy and fulfillment in his work and mentoring young engineers. He and his wife, Nancy, of 47 years, have three grown children and four grandchildren, many of whom live near him. Bob and Nancy live in Laguna Niguel, California.

Bob Shaw `68 celebrated his 55-year Wayland Reunion on campus in October with 12 classmates. He noted, “Where were the rest of my 1968 classmates? All of us were hanging out and having a blast. Your loss!” Katharine Purdy Herbert `68 and Thomas Jon “T.J.” Goetting `64 are delighted to report that this past December (2022), they gathered with their immediate family to marry. This late-in-life partnership is an unexpected gift of kindness, humor, love, and shared Wayland memories. Wayland played a critical role in our union. “T.J. and I first met on campus when T.J. dated my sister Barbara in 1963. We reconnected in 2014 when I accompanied Barbara to her 50th Wayland reunion on our way to a family gathering in Appleton. It took a few years after the 50th reunion before we met again. We lived on opposite USA coasts. Now I am happy to call Missy Goetting `68 my sister-in-law and spend summers in Maine.”

Alison Lighthall Miller `76 and her husband Marc met with Helyn Wohlwend `76 and Brad Garvey `77 for dinner at Cimaroli’s Supper Club in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. Alison noted that some of her favorite people from her Wayland Academy family—Helyn and Brad—drove two hours to meet them for dinner, and they had a wonderful time! BETTY MAIER P`64, `67, `72, `78, `84 JUNE 1, 1923–OCTOBER 6, 2023

Beatrice “Betty” Jane Maier passed away peacefully at age 100 after a long and full life. Betty served as a nurse at Wayland and was a parent to five graduates—Mick Maier Jr. `64, Tom Maier `67, Janet Millermaier `72, Tom Maier `78, and Elizabeth Maier`84. Betty was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, on June l, 1923, one of five children of Mary and John Klein. She was united in marriage to Michael “Mick, Sr.” Maier on March 12, 1945, in Washington, DC. Betty is survived by her sister, Mary Brisbane of Springfield, MO; and step-sisters, Rosemary Moore (Douglas) of Loveland, CO and Barbara Mullen of McFarland, WI; her children: Mick Maier, Jr. (Linda) of Port Washington, WI, Tom Maier (Barbara) of Greenwich, NY, Janet Millermaier (Edward) of Grand Rapids, MI, Mary Maier (Harry) of Beaverton, OR and Elizabeth Marietta (Chandler) of Meredith, NH; 13 grandchildren also survive her; and 15 great-grandchildren. Betty attended St. Peter’s School and Beaver Dam Senior High School. She graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Milwaukee and took graduate courses at Georgetown University. Betty was an active and valued member of the Beaver Dam Community, serving as a Girl Scout leader and chair of cookie sales for several years. She worked as a nurse at Wayland Academy and Beaver Dam Community Hospital. Betty was president of the Women’s Division of Old Hickory. She served on the United Fund Board and chaired its Division on Aging. While in that capacity, Betty started Beaver Dam’s Meals on Wheels Program and served as its chair for 10 years. She was a member of Beaver Dam Community Hospital’s Board for seven years. In 2015, Betty moved to Grand Rapids, MI, where she quickly became a beloved member of the Porter Hills community and one of its most avid bridge players. It was Betty’s love of family that truly defined her life. A devoted mother to her five children, she was always there with a listening ear, sage advice, and unwavering support. Her role as a grandmother to her 13 grandchildren brought her immense joy. In her later years, she embraced the role of great-grandmother, doting on her 15 great-grandchildren. Betty's love for her family was on full display during last June's “Betty Week”—a week-long celebration of her 100 years attended by 38 family members. Betty was at her best—quick with names, sensitive to and conversing with all. Though she has departed this world, Betty’s spirit and the love she bestowed upon her family and friends will forever remain in our hearts. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her kindness and the love she shared with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends will be Read additional details at treasured always. wayland.org/remembrances

HERITAGE SOCIETY SPOTLIGHT

Jon Labahn `57 and Sue Hicks Labahn `57

A TRUE WAYLAND COUPLE Sue Hicks and Jon Labahn first noticed each other as students at Wayland—specifically while enjoying meals in the brand-new Pickard Dining Hall. When he finally asked her to a dance in the spring of their junior year, neither realized they’d be side by side for nearly 70 years. The two dated throughout college, Jon graduating from Kalamazoo College (where his future father-in-law Dr. Weimer K. Hicks became president after Wayland) and Sue from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She would visit him and stay with her parents on the weekends. The couple married on the Kalamazoo College campus, and in 1961, they returned to Wayland as faculty members. Jon taught Spanish and history at the Academy for five years. He also served as the alumni director and editor of Greetings magazine. Sue taught physical education for two years. They also started their own faculty family while teaching at Wayland, welcoming three daughters and a son. As they rounded out their teaching years at Wayland, the Labahns prepared for a new adventure—moving around the Midwest (and eventually the country), as Jon’s career as a fundraiser for universities and hospitals unfolded. They retired 26 years ago to Naples, Florida, though they continued working for several years—Sue until 2012 and Jon until 2022. Today, they live in Michigan with their daughter, Lorajo, and their involvement with Wayland continues.

“Wayland molded and shaped our lives in so many ways, and through planned giving, we look forward to being a part of Wayland’s future.”

–Sue Hicks Labahn `57

“Sue and I have history at Wayland. Sue’s father, Weimer K. Hicks, worked tirelessly to help redefine what Wayland was during his tenure. My parents trusted Wayland would provide not just an education, but a community for me during my time at Wayland. And most importantly, I met my wife 67 years ago at Wayland.”

above In October 2023, Jon and Sue Labahn returned to campus for their 66th class reunion, and Jon was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the undefeated 1957 football team.
