Activities/ 3
New surroundings can be confusing and lonely. The orientation program was designed to get students through that initial period of registration , moving in, and just getting to know each other. Teamwork was definitely required for the initiative exercises, and you can't square dance by yourself. So right there was probably the beginning of many new friendships. Orientation served another purpose, in that it signified the end of summer and the beginning of school. After a hectic week of orientation exercises, you could say some people were relieved to hear that first bell, on the first day of school.

Action Weekend is an annual event at Wayland. Every fall, students participate in a range of activities that includes camping, rafting, biking, canoeing, movie binges, junking, rock-climbing, etc. These breaks from the regular routine of classes give students and teachers a chance to know each other under different circumstances and provide for some experiences the students might not otherwise get.

SPIRIT WEEK AND PARENTS' WEEKEND Parents' Weekend in the fall is similar to what would be called Homecoming in most high schools. The week preceding Parents' Weekend at Wayland is called "Spirit Week"; it is a time for decorating the campus, building effigies, and competing with the other classes for the right to win the spirit stick, which is presented at the annual Friday night pep rally. The activities all lead to the dance on Saturday night and the crowning of the king and queen. This year's king and queen were Reggie Smith and Teresa Muench.

NEW FACILITIES OPENED - NICE CHANGES! During the summer of 1980, work began on a number of construction projects on the campus. Included in these projects was a new addition to the dining hall and the day student area in the basement of the new addition. Also in this are the bookstore, student bank, student mailboxes, and offices for Mr. Cobb and Ms. Greenwood. The courtyard and front entrance to Lindsay Auditorium were redesigned and redecorated, and a new Art Room was constructed. In addition, there was some major renovation and redecorating done in Wayland Hall. The pictures on these pages give some idea of the changes which have been accomplished.
