Science delves into a mystery at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mt. Holly By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Most everybody likes a good mystery and looking for an answer is part of the fun. That’s what happened on April 16 and 17 at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mt. Holly when the case of a long-standing oral tradition concerning the possibility of unmarked graves being located in the cemetery was investigated by using hightech ground penetrating radar (GPR). The survey was conducted by UNC-C geology professor Dr. Andy Bobyarchick and a team of his Applied Geo-
physics students. The survey project was a partnership between the Diocese of Charlotte and UNC-C and part of the diocese’s ongoing work to preserve and restore the historic 1843 Old St. Joseph’s Church after completing a major renovation in 2018. What prompted the investigation? Oral history stories of unmarked graves going back many years. Current St. Joseph’s caretaker Bill Bridgeman says his predecessor in that role, the late Carl Heil, often talked about the tales. “He would get a tear in his eye whenever he spoke about
it,” said Bridgeman. Bryan Somerville is president of the Mecklenburg Co. Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Somerville and his group take part in St. Patrick’s Day ceremonies held each year at the church, which was built by and for Irish immigrants. “The oral histories are of unmarked burials possibly from the 1840s and 1850s,” Somerville said. “People knew if they put them inside the walls of a Catholic cemetery they would be on holy ground and protected.” Somerville approached the diocese’s vicar general and chancellor, Monsignor Patrick Winslow, concerning the oral history stories and See SCIENCE, Page 7

when the third section of the Mt. Holly Greenway officially opens on May 15. The new section is partially paved. It goes from See GREENWAY, Page 3
The Cramerton Historical Society (CHS) Museum held a “soft opening” preview event last Thursday for town commissioners and other dignitaries. Those in attendance enjoyed tours of the facility as well as mini-lectures on local history topics such as the origins of Lineberger’s Fish Camp. CHS president Chris Leazer was at the preview. “It’s great that we are preserving Cramerton’s history,” he said. “The community and volunteers have done a great job putting it together.” See MUSEUM, Page 5

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS The burn barrel Well today I stopped by the local big box store and after parking my ve-hick-uhl far way so as to reduce the chances of someone creasing it, I commenced to stroll the couple hundred yards to the store entrance. I covered about three-fourths of the distance and suddenly realized I had left my gubernatormandated anti-Covid face cloth on the truck seat. Curses! So I had to go back and get the aggravating thing that caused my peaches and cream complexion to break out in a rash a couple of weeks ago and now properly, legally, morally, obediently, subserviently outfitted, I went in the store to get some cheap wine and a quart of motor sickle oil. What, you may wonder, does this have to do with the title of this week’s harangue- The Burn Barrel? I will get to that later. Some of you may not know what a burn barrel is. It is basically a 55-gallon steel drum that you put stuff in to burn. Most city folks can’t have them but I live in the county and they are OK to own and I have one. But to digress, here’s a burn barrel yarn. When I was a lil kid we lived for a brief spell on a dreary street in Charlotte named Logie Ave. There was a chicken slaughterhouse across the road but that’s another story. On the burn barrel front, I had a friend named Ricky Crump and his dad, who was a WWII Marine veteran, had a burn barrel. One fine day Ricky got some cotton batting out of an old chair and put it in the burn barrel, He took a can of gas and poured some on the batting. He took a book of matches and stood beside the barrel with his head looking into the hole at the gas soaked batting. He lit a match. I ran, looking back over my shoulder. Ricky dropped the match into the barrel and it went off like a napalm bomb. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Ricky’s head in a fireball for about one half a second. Ricky dropped and rolled and stood up with a look of shock on his face. His
Motive
eyebrows were gone as was the front part of his head but he was OK otherwise. Now back to today. I use my burn barrel for getting rid of cardboard and Alan Hodge occasionally twigs. Banner-News Editor Some folks are not as nice as me and put stuff in their barrel like plastic which lets out a horrid stench. IMHO, it’s also courteous to note the direction of the wind as you burn stuff since having clouds of smoke go to your neighbor’s atmosphere and stinking up their house and cars is pretty sorry too. In the winter it’s nice to stand next to a burn barrel and warm yourself and watch the flames leap up and see the heat waves wiggling clearly in the cold air. I like to hold my hands up and warm them and recall the time when I was on the union picket line at UPS when we went on strike back in the 1970s and we had a barrel next to the railroad tracks on N. Graham St. and the railroad men would give us coal for the barrel and we always had a nice fire and stayed warm like that. But that’s another story too. So, here’s my great idea for using a burn barrel. Back in the 1960s women burned their bras as a means of protest and to flout their liberation among other things. If, and when, we ever get to take off our masks I would like to see a burn barrel put in the middle of every downtown Main Street around here so folks can toss their masks in and watch the face-cloths burn to ashes. Then we can all have a party and smile and see our mouths and our teeth full of glee and talk like normal. Wouldn’t that great? I think so. Yeah, burn, baby, burn.
Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org
If you watch many documentaries on crime or mysteries, you will notice that often one of the first things investigators look for is motive. Why, why did the person do what they did? In much of life, we have a motive, a reason for our actions. Motive can play a part in our relationships, and much of the decisions we make. We can also be driven by our motives in our relationship with Jesus. In Acts 5:1-11, a husband and wife, Ananias and Sapphira, sold a piece of property. After the sell, they were going to give the proceeds to God, to benefit the church and the followers in need. The only problem was, they were concocting a lie. They were going to give a portion of the profits to God yet keep the rest. They were going to lie and pretend to be giving all of the profits to God sacrificially, while actually not. When Ananias came before Peter to bring the money, Peter knew what he had done, and questioned why he would lie to God. At this moment, Ananias fell down dead. About three hours later, Sapphira came before Peter. She did not know what had happened to her husband, and that their lie had been re-
vealed. Peter questioned her, to see if she would also lie. She did indeed, and she too fell dead. The church was filled with fear after these events. Ananias and Sapphira had a motive. They wanted to appear before the church as great followers of Jesus, giving their all to grow His kingdom. However, this was all for appearance. In reality they simply wanted the adoration of people, not God. Sadly, it did not even bother them to lie to God. We all have motives with God. What is our motive? Are we seeking to please Him in all things, and to grow more like Jesus every day, or is our motive only what we can get from God?
If we are going to have a true relationship with Rev. Trent Tankin Jesus, it begins with an honest look at our own lives. God knows our hearts, and He knows our motives. Like Ananias and Sapphira learned, it is pointless to lie to God. Instead, we need to approach God humbly an honestly. We are sinful, broken people, in need of Jesus. May our only motive be to honor Jesus and seek always to please Him and lead others to Him. What is your motive with God today?

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

Impactful shadows Have you ever wondered how music affects you; calms you, helps recall thoughts “out of the blue,” or transports you to another place? The truth is, we need music; we’re designed by God to need it and music we listen to “overshadows” us in a miraculous way to facilitate communication for our souls. During Easter this year, my wife shared a YouTube musical video with me. Cassandra Star and her sister sing a moving duet called the Easter Hallelujah. I shared it with a few friends and Gary responded saying “What is it about songs like that that have such power?” I thought about that; a lot. Music stretches throughout Holy Scripture. The book of psalms alone is a doxology of 150 songs to God reflecting human emotions immersed in life’s challenges. Why do we commit similar thoughts and emotions to music? Is it possible that the fullness of the communication we desire cannot be expressed adequately otherwise? And while we consider music content overshadowing us, don’t you know music can be good or bad? Some is transcendent; connecting us to God, others fun and fanciful, some seem valueless, some overshadows listeners with depression and hopelessness which is not what God desires for us, and some is hellishly harmful to our souls and the world around us because it shapes destructive attitudes and actions. Our global condition desperately needs a noble shadow and everything good and righteous flows from LOVE. In Matthew 22:35-40 Jesus teaches us the greatest two commandments are to love God with our whole being, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. In Galatians 5 Paul tells us to walk hand in hand with God’s spirit, avoid the damaging works of our sinful flesh and seek the fruit of the Holy Spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Within this list LOVE is listed first. We can’t achieve the following 8 unless we learn to love first; starting with God! And have we even considered the idea that without God we don’t even know much about love in the first place. As we lift our souls to God in prayer and song; in praise,

gratefulness, and recognition of who He is, let’s remember that our conversation is bi-directional. We speak/sing AND listen; listen and learn as God reveals more Dennis Siracusa of Himself, His truth, and our humanity and when He overshadows us with Himself, we overshadow those we encounter, with His image. In Acts 5:15 Peter, under God’s enablement, healed people who simply encountered his shadow. So this begs the question, whose shadow are we allowing to cover us? The devil wants to dominate and darken our lives and destroy everything. God wants life abundantly for us here and for eternity. Whose music are we choosing to listen to; to immerse ourselves in? Our consistent choice makes all the difference. Let’s start by asking God to help us really learn to love. Love Him first and then others and when we do, our world will be brighter and our life music will overshadow humanity with what it hungers for and will bless our Father in heaven too.

There’s a nice fishing spot on the creek. Birds and other wildlife can be seen along the pathway. The entrance on the park end of things is nicely landscaped
and has a new split rail fence and footbridge. Chelsey and Brenda McLean were at River Park last Friday and had nice things to say about the Greenway. “It is really nice and will let more people get out in nature,” said Chelsey. Brenda concurred. “The city did a great job
with it,” she said. “It is really beautiful. “We plan on using it a lot.” The new section has been largely supported by Caromont. The Mount Holly Community Development Foundation (MHCDF) has been and continues to be a public-private partner with the City on the Greenway System. The scheduled May 15th ribbon cutting event will be held by the City, and Friends of the Greenway Sys-
tem (“FROGS”), a MHCDF committee, was a co-host. Last July, a section of the Greenway at the Clariant railroad overpass just across from the Municipal Center parking lot was opened. It weaves its way along the shore of the Catawba River for 1.25 miles to Tuckaseege Park where it connects to a .75 mile pathway there. pleasant, pastoral, experience. The wide, paved, path follows the river and offers great views of the water. Other portions of the greenway pass through forest and along meadow-like fields. Rail fencing on the sides give the greenway a Blue Ridge Parkway feel. A variety of wildlife can be seen along the parkway including birds and small mammals. At the Tuckaseege Park end, the greenway passes by a pollinator garden with a variety of wildflower plantings. In late March, 2018, the
Mountain Island Park portion of the greenway opened. The 1.59 mile stretch is near Mt. Island dam and runs alongside the Catawba River through lush forest. It took 900 man hours to create the wide, graveled trail and construct five pedestrian wooden bridges. Greenway amenities include benches, trail markers, trash cans, and picnic tables. Signage and mile markers are present throughout the trail and have numbers that can be relayed to Police and Fire Dispatch in case of an emergency.

I hustled to make it to my second setup that morning. I was trying to get in a quick hunt before attending my church service. I thought, for sure, my initial GARY MILLER location would be my best opportunity. The toms are there most every morning, and I had arrived about an hour before daylight. But to my surprise, I never heard the first gobble. After realizing time was running out, I made my way back to my truck and traveled another 20 minutes to give it one last shot. As I got closer to my destination, the fog got thicker and thicker. And even though the sun was burning it off quickly, it was lingering in the bottoms. I parked, got out of my truck, and immediately heard a gobbler a few hundred yards away, on the edge of a field. I decided to forgo stealth and head straight for him, hoping the fog would keep me hidden. So far, so good. As I arrived to the top of the far hill, I realized the bird was farther away than I originally thought. I started calling aggressively and he began answering aggressively as well. After a few minutes of this back and forth, I came to the conclusion he was not going to make the effort to come my way. However, about that time, the fog lifted just enough for me to see him with my binoculars, in the distance. He was coming my way! I watched him until he dropped under the hill below me. I got ready. After a few minutes, I heard a gobble to my left. I thought he had been detoured by another hen. My chance had slipped away. I slowly stood up behind some briars and carefully scanned the hill in front of me. There he was. His white head gave him away. The gobble I heard to the left was another tom. I eased back down and waited without calling. He was gobbling but I was not going to give away my location. So, I let him look and look as he got closer and closer. Finally, he came within a comfortable range, and I bagged my bird. By the time I tagged him and got back to my truck, I was going to have to forgo a shower and shave to make it to my 10:00 a.m. service. And my camo hat would also have to be my Sunday morning accessory. I made it in time and was thankful I looked no different than many others who were there. Jesus said, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.” I think Jesus would say the same thing about Sunday, the day most Christians set aside today. That is, I’m sure he would be happy for any of us to enjoy whatever we want to do on Sunday, as long as we don’t neglect the opportunities to come together for our encouragement. It’s okay. I promise. Contact me to speak at your next event. www.outdoortruths.org gary@outdoortruths.org

CHS treasurer Phil Humphries agreed. “The museum is a great idea that finally got off the ground,” he said. Cramerton mayor Will Cauthen was also excited about the museum. “It’s beautiful and has been a long time coming,” he remarked. “We are blessed to have this many people passionate about Cramerton and its past.” The Cramerton Historical Society’s physical location is at the Cramerton Community Center’s first (bottom) floor at 1 Julian Street. An official “grand opening “ date for the general public has yet to be set but should not be too far off in the near future. How-

One big item on the museum’s to do list is turning a small room into a replica of Stuart Cramer’s office when he ran the mills. His imposing desk is currently in the Cramerton Town Hall. “We need items that would have been in an office circa 1920s to 1930s,” Atkinson said. Other items on display includes a tribute to Cramerton’s famous khaki cloth that was used to make countless WWII uniforms. Another, larger room on the Community Center’s lower level is currently used by senior citizens as a fellowship hall for their weekly lunch gatherings. One wall of that space has already been covered with large, framed, archival photos showing things such as the hotel and rail depot that were once in Cramerton. The photos were previously in the recreation center gym across the street. “We plan to use the fellowship hall for special events,” said Atkinson. The Cramerton Historical Society is an independent 501c3 non-profit organization. If you have any questions, please contact the Chairman of the Museum Committee, Richard Atkinson

After several days, some preliminary results are in. How strong is the reflected energy? How deep is the reflecting object? What is the shape of the reflecting object? If we are looking for unmarked graves, the radar will detect grave contents only if there is something to reflect the energy. In modern graves that include a metal casket and a vault, you usually see very strong reflections because of the metal in those objects. In older graves where the body might have been interred in a wooden coffin, the radar reflection will be much weaker to nonexistent. Metal in the wooden coffin such as nails or handles might cause a reflection, and sometimes the grave shaft itself will show up as a lateral disturbance in the natural soil horizon.” The survey action began on the morning of April l6

Highway dedication will honor Officer Tyler Herndon Recently, members of the City of Mt. Holly Administration, City Council, and the Police Department attended a very special virtual meeting with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. During this meeting, the Board
of Transportation Road/ Bridge/Ferry Naming Committee unanimously voted to approve the dedication of a section of Highway 273 in Mount Holly to be named the “Officer Tyler A. Herndon Highway”. This section of Highway 273 will span
from Highway 273 at I-85 to Morningside Drive. The formal dedication will be later this year. This is truly an honor for the City of Mount Holly, The Mount Holly Police Department, and the Herndon Family.

Governor Cooper outlines timeline for lifting State’s COVID-19 restrictions Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D. laid out a timeline for lifting current pandemic restrictions last week. With stable trends and continued vaccination success, the state expects to lift mandatory social distancing, capacity, and mass gathering restrictions by June 1. The Governor plans to issue an executive order this week outlining safety restrictions for the month of May. “Each shot in an arm is a step closer to putting this pandemic in the rearview mirror,” said Governor Cooper. “North Carolinians have shown up for each other throughout this entire pandemic and we need to keep up that commitment by getting our vaccines.” North Carolina continues to focus on distributing vaccines quickly and equitably. This fast and fair approach to getting shots in arms is the best way to beat this pandemic, protect one another, boost the economy and make it possible for restrictions to be lifted. To date, the state has administered over 6.5 million vaccines. 46.9 percent of adults are at least partially vaccinated, and 35.1 percent are fully vaccinated. More than 76 percent of people 65 and older have had at least one shot. With vaccine now widely available across the state – often with no wait for an appointment, all North Carolinians 16 and older can plan to take their shot. The state anticipates lifting the mask mandate and easing other public health recommendations, once two thirds of adult North Carolinians have re-
ceived at least one vaccine dose and if trends remain stable. “We are at an exciting moment. We now have enough vaccine for everyone,” said Secretary Cohen. “If you are 16 and older, it is your turn to join the more than 3.6 million North Carolinians who have already taken their first shot. It’s up to you to get us to the two thirds goal as quickly as possible so we can live with this virus and begin to put this pandemic behind us.” Gov. Cooper and Sec. Cohen urged North Carolinians continue to get vaccinated and exercise good judgment even when restrictions are lifted. Businesses should continue to follow voluntary health recommendations and North Carolinians should continue to take
safety measures in order to boost the economy, keep children in schools and protect each other. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released statistics indicating that North Carolina is among the states with the fewest deaths and fewest job losses per capita. State health officials are continuing to monitor the presence of COVID-19 and its more contagious variants in North Carolina, which is why it is important to continue to follow the state’s mask mandate and continue to practice safety precautions, including the Three Ws—wear a mask, wait 6 feet apart, and wash hands often.

Sewer discharge The City of Belmont had a discharge of untreated wastewater from an 8” gravity main within our collection system located at 6846 Wilkinson Boulevard. The discharge occurred on April 19, 2021, around 2:30 pm and lasted until approximately 6:50 pm the same day. The untreated wastewater entered a creek leading to the Catawba River Basin. The discharge, estimated at approximately 2600 gal-
lons, was the result of clay pipe failure. The pipe was inspected in January 2021 and had no reported concerns. Overflow cleaning repairs, inspections and clean-up was performed by the City of Belmont’s Water Distribution Collections Division. North Carolina General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.C required this notice. For further information contact Public Works Director, Bill Carroll at (704) 825-0507.
Gaston Christian Middle School Eagles tallied nine hits on the day. Kennedy and Cooper Tyree all collected multiple hits for Gaston Christian Middle School Eagles. Kennedy led Gaston Christian Middle School Eagles with three hits in four at bats. Zachary Kimmel started and finished the game on the bump facing a total of eighteen batters, throwing a total of 63 pitches, walking one and striking out six batters. Gaston Christian Middle School Eagles finished out the season 5-6 and are looking forward to next year. Thanks to eighth grade young men (Cooper Tyree, Zachary Kimmel, Trevor Baczek, Jaden Moore, Gavin Traywick and Cooper Summerlin) for all of their hard work and dedication to this year and wish them the best starting their Gaston Christian High School Baseball season next year.

Abbey earns lacrosse championship Noah Haas scored four goals and the Belmont Abbey Men’s Lacrosse team earned a 12-7 victory over top-seeded Mount Olive to win the Conference Carolinas Championship. How It Happened Austin Hasen got the Crusaders on the board less than two minutes into the contest, and The Abbey never trailed after that. Haas scored two goals in the period and Belmont Abbey led 4-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Crusaders outshot the Trojans 16-5 in the quarter. Haas scored again in the opening minutes of the second, while Tim Palmer found the back of the net at the 3:14 mark, and the Crusaders held a 6-4 advantage at halftime. It took Connor Toomey less than
a minute into the third to put BAC up 7-4. Sean Hanrahan found the back of the net as time expired to put Belmont Abbey in front 8-4 heading into the final period. BAC outshot UMO 11-6 in the third quarter. In the fourth, it was again Haas scoring early for the Crusaders. Later in the quarter, back-to-back man-up goals gave Belmont Abbey an 11-7 lead with 6:05 left in the contest. Bailey Williams scored the final goal of the contest to cap off the 12-7 victory. On the day, Haas led the Crusaders with four goals. On the defensive side, Belmont Abbey caused 11 Mount Olive turnovers, led by Toomey and Neil Lingerman with three each. Thomas Sullivan made 10 saves in goal. After the game, Sullivan was named the Tournament MVP.
