Mi Pueblito announces scholarship opportunity for high school seniors

Mi Pueblito Mexican Restaurant is proud to announce the launch of the Mi Pueblito Memorial Scholarship, a new opportunity for local high school seniors pursuing careers in hospitality, culinary arts, non-English languages, human development, or immigration studies.

KM Farmers’ Market finds permanent home

Cleveland County Commissioners approved the purchase of a new permanent location for

town Kings Mountain with a Grand Opening planned for Saturday, May 17, 2025.

The new site offers excellent visibility, easy access for residents, ample parking, and additional foot traffic for surrounding businesses, making it an exceptional location for the market’s longterm operations.

Since 2023, Foothills Farmers’ Market board members and community volunteers have worked diligently to establish a peak-season market to serve the Kings Mountain community. The Market currently operates under tents on Saturdays from May through September, featuring approximately 20 vendors, attracting

an average of 300 customers each week, and generating more than $50,000 in sales for local farmers and home-based businesses.

“Given the market’s success, we quickly recognized the need for a permanent market location that would protect vendors and customers from extreme weather and be able to extend the market season,” said Greg Traywick, Extension Director. “After exploring several potential locations, we identified the parcel at 313 S. Battleground Avenue as the best option.”

The County will be drafting a memorandum of agreement to outline responsibilities and

expectations related to the ownership, stewardship, and use of the property. Plans are underway to construct a “Kings Mountain Hometown Farmers’ Market” pavilion, modeled after the one in Uptown Shelby, with an architectural plan and construction cost estimate in development. Once finalized, organizers will begin seeking grant funding to help finance the project.

Follow the Kings Mountain Farmers’ Market on Facebook for future news and announcements. Vendor applications are now open for the 2025 Market Season for Kings Mountain and Shelby at www.foothillsfarmersmarket.com.

Snow blower safety tips

Meteorologists are predicting an El Niño weather pattern this winter. What that spells out for particular regions of the country remains to be seen, but when snow hits certain areas hard, cleanup will be necessary. It is essential for homeowners and business owners to get outdoors promptly to remove snow from walkways for the safety of pedestrians. Shoveling snow can be back-breaking work, particularly when the snow is very wet or compacted. That’s why many people have invested (or plan to invest) in snow blowers to make faster work of snow removal. While these tools are quite effective, they require caution and proper technique to help avoid injuries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates there are 5,740 hospital emergency roomrelated injuries associated with snow blowers each year. The organization Safety Now says most injuries associated with snow blowers involve injuries to the hands or fingers, including amputation. Individuals can prevent common injuries and even death by following these snow blower safety guidelines.

• Read the owner’s manual to understand all of the controls and features before use.

• Dress accordingly for the weather, including using sturdy footwear with good traction. Boot or shoe grippers can reduce the risk of slips and falls. Also, avoid loose clothing, as scarves or jackets

can become tangled in moving parts of the machine.

• Start the snow blower outside and not in a garage or shed. Gaspowered devices give off carbon monoxide.

• Stay focused on the task at hand, which means using the snow blower only when sober and not under the influence of medications that can cause drowsiness.

• Working at a brisk pace can help prevent the snow blower blades from getting clogged from the snow sticking. Wet, heavy snow is more likely to clog the machine, so it may require more passes to get the job done.

• Clogs can occur, and require extreme caution to dislodge. Always turn off the snow blower and disengage the clutch, says the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Wait for the impeller blades to stop spinning. Always use a broom handle or a stick to clear compacted snow. Never stick your hand down the chute or around the blades, even if the power switch is off.

• Keep all safety shields and mechanisms in place on the machine.

• Do not leave a snow blower unattended.

• If the snow blower is an electrical version, use an extension cord designed for outdoor use and plug it into an outlet equipped with a ground fault circuit interrupter. Keep the extension cord away from the auger.

Even though snow blowing can be less physically taxing than manually shoveling snow, it still exerts the body. Take frequent breaks to rest. Exercise caution where you toss the snow, and make sure other people, particularly children, are not in the path of snow removal.

CLEVELAND COUNTY’S

Cleveland Community College to Launch Health Sciences Academy for High School Students

The Golden LEAF Foundation has awarded Cleveland Community College more than $600,000 to establish a Health Sciences Academy designed for high school juniors and seniors.

This innovative program will provide 11thand 12th-grade students with the opportunity to complete prerequisite courses and earn industry-recognized healthcare credentials while still in high school. By participating in the Academy, students will gain a clear pathway into healthcare careers, helping to address the growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals in the local community.

The Health Sciences Academy will be integrated into the existing busing program with Cleveland County Schools, which currently supports high school students enrolled in technical education courses at the College.

“We are excited to offer this new opportunity to students interested in healthcare careers,” said Jason Hurst, president of CCC.

“Our community needs more healthcare professionals, and with this grant, we can help students take their first steps toward a rewarding future in this field.”

As part of the program, students can earn certifications such as CPR and Nurse Aide, providing valuable hands-on skills that can lead to immediate job opportunities or further studies in CCC’s health sciences programs after graduation.

Cleveland County Schools and Gardner-

Webb University have partnered with CCC to develop this healthcare educational pathway, and they were also awarded funding from the Golden Leaf Foundation. GWU received funding to expose younger students to healthcare career options, develop a summer bridge experience for rising 11thand 12th-graders and to improve its nursing program. CCS’ grant award will help expand participation in the healthcare education pathway to students at Turning Point Academy, the system’s alternative school.

“Cleveland County Schools and GardnerWebb University have been wonderful partners in helping our students achieve their career goals,” said Bruce Mack, vice president of academic affairs at CCC. “By working together, we’re creating even more opportunities for students to enter the healthcare workforce and continue their education.”

The Health Sciences Academy aims to eliminate barriers for high school students interested in healthcare careers by offering accessible education, practical training, and seamless transitions into CCC’s health sciences programs. By creating this structured pathway, CCC is helping to develop the next generation of healthcare professionals who can enter the workforce immediately after high school or pursue higher education in the healthcare field.

How to prepare for winter storms

Winter arrives with fanfare as Christmas, Chanukah and New Year’s Eve all take place within days of the first day of the season. Parties and shopping may distract people from the weather around them, but after resolutions are made and the decorations are packed away, it’s not long before it’s time to confront winter’s wrath. Storms are commonplace in January and February in many parts of the world, and even March storms are not unheard of. Knowing how to prepare for storms can keep people safer and prevent home damage. If a storm is forecasted, follow these guidelines.

• Charge a mobile phone and other electronic devices to full battery in advance of the storm in case power goes out.

• Stock the home with extra batteries for flashlights and battery-powered devices, such as a portable radio.

• Invest in a car charger to charge devices if the power is out for some time.

• Keep a supply of canned or boxed nonperishable items, as well as convenience foods that do not need to be cooked, like granola bars.

• Periodically check to ensure that the first aid kit is stocked with items that have not expired.

• Refill medications so that they are on hand in the event weather makes it challenging to get to the store.

• Keep emergency supplies of bottled water. If you forget this, fill the bathtub up with fresh water. Extra water will be needed for toilet flushing if yours is a septic system.

• Have warm blankets on hand and sleeping bags for each person in the home.

• Unplug all electronic devices if the power goes out to protect against a surge and damage when the power is restored.

• Exercise caution when burning candles, opting for flashlights and lanterns instead.

• If it’s very cold outside, move refrigerated and frozen items outdoors so they do not spoil

in an unpowered refrigerator.

• Do not use gas stoves, charcoal grills or other openflame heat sources for warmth indoors. Carbon monoxide gas can build up inside and prove deadly.

• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using a backup generator for power.

• Stock up on gasoline for vehicles and to power gas-driven generators.

• Use power company websites and apps to report outages and stay apprised of restoration status.

• Be cautious of downed power lines in the area when driving or walking. Winter storms can be beautiful but dangerous without ample preparation.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Office of Federal Programs has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CLC) grant. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland County submits this Community Notice of our intent to apply in partnership with Cleveland County Schools. The BGCCC will request funding to serve students from Jefferson, James Love, Elizabeth, and Township Three Elementary Schools.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland County has been well established in Shelby, NC, for almost 60 years. BGCCC programs in Cleveland County are highly performing, providing high-quality out-of-school time programs to students and families. Programs work collaboratively with the community to connect families with beneficial resources.

At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland County Shelby Club Site (412 W. Sumter St.), the CLC managed by the BGCCC will provide Core Academic and Enrichment learning opportunities, integrated during out-of-school time (OST) programs – after school, during school vacation weeks, and in the summer – for youth in kindergarten through grade 5. Activities are designed to supplement the work of Cleveland County Schools and extend learning beyond the traditional 180-day school year. Social and emotional learning is an integral part of daily programming along with literacy and math skills. The CLC at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland County will continue to be integrated into the school’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework

with school-wide and targeted services and provide a seamless transition to and from school. In after-school programs, students are able to access programs that are built upon their school day and provide extended learning opportunities. During school vacation weeks, the BGCCC provides a camp-like environment where students participate in fun learning activities onsite. A Broken Heart

(Part 3 of “Cupid” Series)

We’ve all experienced heartbreak in some form—whether it’s a romantic relationship that didn’t work out, a friendship that faded, or even a family bond that’s been strained. These wounds can leave us feeling lost, hurt, and unsure how to move forward. But here’s the good news: God is in the business of healing broken hearts. Psalm 147:3 (AMP) reminds us , “He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds [healing their pain and comforting their sorrow].” Just like Cupid’s arrow, God’s love pierces through the pain and brings restoration.

Cupid’s Arrow

DANYALE PATTERSON

encourages us, “God loves you and has chosen you as his own special people. So be gentle, kind, humble, meek, and patient. Put up with each other, and forgive anyone who does you wrong, just as Christ has forgiven you. Love is more important than anything else. It is what ties everything completely together.”

Forgiveness is like Cupid’s arrow—it has the power to heal and restore what’s been fractured.

It’s a Process

bring beauty from the ashes. Trust in His timing, lean into His love, and watch as He mends what’s been broken.

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

Congressman Tim Moore Introduces Bill

Imagine Cupid’s arrow as a symbol of God’s love— a love that doesn’t just create connections but repairs them. When we invite God into our relationships, He begins to work in ways we can’t always see. He softens hardened hearts, opens lines of communication, and helps us forgive when forgiveness feels impossible.

Colossians 3:12-14 (CEV)

But healing doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process, and it requires patience, prayer, and trust in God’s timing. Just as Cupid’s arrow takes careful aim, God’s healing work in our lives is intentional and precise. He knows exactly where we’re hurting and how to mend those wounds. Jeremiah 17:14 (NLT) says, “O LORD, if you heal me, I will be truly healed; if you save me, I will be truly saved. My praises are for you alone!” When we surrender our pain to Him, He works miracles in our hearts and relationships. So, if you’re feeling the weight of a broken heart today, take heart. God is working to

“ Father, I praise you for being Jehovah Rapha - God my Healer. You not only heal me physically but also emotionally. Thank you for caring about every aspect of my life. I ask you to help me to forgive those who have hurt me just as you have forgiven me. I release them and give them to you. Please remove bitterness, anger, and offense from my heart. Lord, create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. In Jesus’ nameAmen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

This week, Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) introduced H.R. 1333, legislation to designate U.S. Highway 74, from I-26 in Columbus, N.C., to I-85 in Kings Mountain, N.C. as a future interstate. The bill is cosponsored by Congressman Chuck Edwards (NC-11), who introduced this legislation in the 118th Congress.

"For many of my constituents, US 74 is a heavily-traveled route for commuting, commerce, and daily life, and upgrading it to future interstate status will bring long-overdue im-

provements," said Congressman Moore. "This designation will open this corridor for new economic development, attract businesses, and create more opportunities for Western North Carolina. I am grateful to Congressman Edwards for his leadership in the previous Congress on this initiative and am proud to continue this important work."

The future-interstate designation will allow the North Carolina Department of Transportation to place corresponding signs along the corridor that runs through Polk, Rutherford, Cleveland,

and Gaston counties and ensure the road is brought up to interstate standards. Currently, Rutherford and Cleveland counties do not have an interstate within their county lines. This designation is expected to boost economic opportunity in both counties while improving regional connectivity.

Congressman Tim Moore represents the 14th Congressional District of North Carolina, including Cleveland, Gaston, Burke and Rutherford Counties, as well as parts of Mecklenburg and Polk County.

I-40 set to reopen March 1 in Pigeon River Gorge

On February 10, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein and N.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins shared an update indicating that progress is ongoing in the recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene.

“I am pleased to announce that we will reopen two lanes of I-40 by March 1,” the governor said while standing on a section of the closed interstate. “I am proud of NCDOT’s focus on this challenge and the roadworkers who have worked tirelessly to reopen roads and keep people safe.

“Reopening these lanes will help reconnect North Carolina and Tennessee and allow us to welcome back visitors to bolster the economy.”

NCDOT, along with its contract partners, will spend the upcoming weeks focusing on stabilizing the westbound lanes of the interstate. This includes installing 40 mph speed limit signs and a 9-inch curb to create a separation between the two travel lanes, as well as safety inspections of the area.

One lane in each direction will remain open for regular traffic from Exit 20 to Exit 15, as well as from Exit 7 up to the state line and approximately five miles into Tennessee. This section will accommodate standard-sized trucks, but oversized loads will not be permitted.

On Monday, Stein and Hopkins held discussions with local, state, and federal officials at the location of the most significant

slope failure within the 4-mile corridor. Among those present were U.S. Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd, U.S. Representatives Tim Moore and Chuck Edwards, and USDOT Secretary Sean Duffy. All are collaborating to assist NCDOT and western North Carolina in recovering from the state's most devastating and costly natural disaster to date.

“As I welcomed Secretary Duffy to North Carolina today

to show him the devastating impact Hurricane Helene had on our roads, I expressed my appreciation for U.S. DOT’s partnership and emphasized that there are billions of dollars of work still to do to get people safely back on the roads,” Stein said. “I look forward to working with Secretary Duffy and our federal partners to ensure we have the resources we need to rebuild our infrastructure as quickly as possible. And I am

grateful for his visit to shine a spotlight on western North Carolina. It is clear to me that he intends to help.”

Congressman Tim Moore shared, “I want to thank Secretary Duffy, Secretary Noem, Acting FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton, and other Trump Administration officials who have kept their focus on rebuilding Western North Carolina. Unlike the previous administration, they are show-

ing real leadership and initiative to help the hardworking families who have lost everything. President Trump knows these communities can’t afford to wait, and when he said he would put America First, he meant it. While Biden’s FEMA wasted time and resources, Trump’s team is moving fast, cutting through bureaucracy, and delivering real results. This is America First in action.”

Following the storm on Sep-

tember 28, damage caused the closure of I-40, with entire sections of the eastbound lanes collapsing into the tumultuous Pigeon River. In response, NCDOT officials promptly initiated plans to reopen the interstate for at least partial traffic. They engaged Wright Brothers Construction as the main contractor and GeoStabilization Inc. as the subcontractor to create soil-nail walls at ten sites within the Gorge. This significant project is scheduled to take place over a period of 126 days and includes the following tasks:

• 530 cubic yards of shotcrete

• 2,088 linear feet of soil nails

• 15,200 pounds of steel in the center curb

• 4 miles of fortified shoulder to carry heavy truck traffic

• Installation of 90,000 square feet of soil-nail wall Teams responsible for the permanent reconstruction of I-40 are preparing to start their work on the recovery efforts in the Gorge. In October, NCDOT awarded a contract to Ames Construction as the prime contractor, with RK&K as the designer and HNTB managing the project for the permanent repairs.

“We’re happy that we can open I-40 in a couple of weeks. That will help travel and commerce between North Carolina and Tennessee,” Hopkins said. “And we’ll continue working on the rest of the routes until we get those built, too – we're here to the end.”

Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) joined U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, along with several federal, state, and local officials, to

Residents and commuters in Cleveland County can look forward to significant improvements in their daily travels with the upcoming opening of a new section of the U.S. 74 Bypass. According to Jen Goodwin, communications officer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the approximately five-mile stretch of the bypass from east of N.C. 226 to east of N.C. 150 is nearing completion and is expected to open this spring. This new section aims to alleviate traffic congestion on U.S. 74 and improvetraffic flow around Shelby. Contractors are currently working on completing the final paving on N.C. 18, pavement markings on all intersections, and putting up signs.

Goodwin stated, "Shelby Bypass is currently open west of Peachtree Road to NC226. The next section to open will be the R-2707C section, which starts at NC-226 and extends to NC-150. We anticipate the R-2707C project will

be open to traffic this spring." The entire U.S. 74 Bypass project, which began construction in 2013, will eventually span 18.5 miles of four-lane highway extending east of Mooresboro to west of Stony Point Road in Kings Mountain.

As this highway section opens, drivers are advised to stay informed about the latest traffic updates and follow the posted speed limits to ensure safety. For those traveling on the U.S. 74 Bypass, drivers are recommended to plan for potential delays during the initial opening phase as construction crews complete the final touches. The final section of the new bypass is expected to be completed by April 2029.

These upcoming bypass road openings mark significant milestones in improving transportation infrastructure in North Carolina, providing safer, more efficient routes for Shelby and Cleveland County residents and travelers alike.

This winter has lingered longer than I wanted. I’m glad March is just around the corner. While that month is unpredictable, most likely there will be more warmer days than miserable ones. And I’m here for it. What is also just around the corner is turkey season. No matter what the weather brings, rst week of April will get me back in the woods. This year, it seems I’ve been more excited about chasing those toms than I have been in the past. I’m actually excited to test my wits against theirs. I’ve hunted these birds for a few decades now and have gotten my fair share of gobblers. I’ve also missed too many to count. This is really what keeps all turkey hunters going back. It’s the competition. If we always got our game, boredom would keep us home. But it’s the uncertainty of the outcome that keeps us going back. And I

Over those years I have had to learn the art of talking turkey. I have tried to call these birds using just about every type of call. And while I prefer the diaphragm (mouth) call, it is probably the one I’m most insecure with. I really don’t think I’m very good at using it, but I do have success. I’m one of those guys who knows just enough to call in a few gobblers, but not enough to know every sound that I’m making. And I’m definitely not the person who would ever enter some calling competition. My fairly successful experiences are all I have to offer. But don’t expect me to be able to explain the intricacies of successful calling. You’ll not be convinced.

I think these same truths mark many Christians. It’s the truth about what we feel about our ability to describe God or explain the intricacies of Christianity. We live in a world that is not only full of skeptics but is also full of easily attained information. This means that anytime we talk about our faith, there will likely be someone who brings up something like the possibilities of the existence of the prehistoric, prior to the antediluvian period. Or describe the Trinity. Yeah, me too. What I am saying is this. Many times we remain quiet about our faith because we are afraid that questions will be asked for which we have no answers. The good news is this. While we may not be skilled theologians, we do have our own successful and wonderful experiences with God. And no one can debate them. Remember this. Experience always trumps information. While your friend may argue your views, they can only admire your experiences. So, don’t be afraid to share your faith. Just tell them what God has done for you. Your success will be more effective than your ability to call.
