FKCC thrives due to local support
Spring is a season of growth, and thanks to incredible support, the impact of Feeding Kids Cleveland County (FKCC) continues to expand. According to the organization’s recent newsletter, they served 31 families in February, followed by 26 families in March through small-scale deliveries to students on a modified school calendar at three local schools.
FKCC's largest delivery of the year took place on April 5, when they served 263 families and reached 823 children and 565 adults with essential food and educational materials, including books.
While many organizations nationwide experience a decline in volunteerism, FKCC is fortunate to have a dedicated and compassionate community that continues to support students. Thanks to the incredible efforts of volunteers, last winter they collected over 1,500 books, and their Reading Kids team has been working diligently to organize these resources for children in need.
By supporting Feeding Kids, community members ensure that local students receive the nourishment and resources they need to thrive. Recently, the organization was honored as the 2024 Nonprofit of the Year by the Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce, a recognition awarded during
their Black and White Party on March 28.
FKCC’s efforts in Cleveland County are made possible by community members who champion their mission through volunteerism, leadership, and financial contributions.

Blossom Within
(Part 2 of “Grow” Series)
I love April— seeing all the beautiful flowers blooming is such a treat, isn’t it? The world transforms with bursts of color, each petal unfolding like a quiet celebration of life. That’s a picture of how we should be, blossoming within through our faith in Christ. Just as spring flowers don’t rush or force their beauty, our spiritual growth is a gentle, steady process—rooted in God’s love and nurtured by His grace. The Bible paints this picture so well in 2 Peter 3:18 (NIV): “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.”
A Tough Season
Growth isn’t about perfection or speed—it’s about deepening our connection to Jesus. Think of it like a flower turning toward the sun. We don’t have to strain; we just need to stay near Him, soaking in His presence through prayer, His Word, and trust. That’s where the blossoming begins—not on the outside first, but within, where
only God can see the roots spreading. I remember a tough season a few years back. Life felt heavy—everything was stressful, but I continued to run to the Lord, not run from him. God was faithful to strengthen me; now, I have a testimony!
Psalm 1:2-3 (NLT) says, “But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.”
Let Go
Sometimes, though, blooming means letting go. Jesus talks about this in John 15:2 (NIV): “He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” Pruning can sting—maybe it’s an old grudge, a distraction, or a comfort we’ve outgrown. But God’s trimming away what’s dead so we can flourish. I’ve had to let go of some things this year, and while it wasn’t easy, I feel lighter, freer to grow into who He’s calling me to be. So as April unfolds, let’s take a cue from the flowers. Stay rooted in Christ, let Him shape us. You might not see it today,
but something beautiful is unfolding inside you.
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“Father, as I sit here in the quietness of your Presence, I am in awe of you - your love and your plan for me. I praise you because you are faithful, and you are gentle with me. Thank you for pruning me from the extra weight I didn’t need. I ask that you will continue to cause me to bloom and grow so that all will glorify you as you work in me and through me. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.
Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you! Contact her at www.danyale.com to share a testimony, send a prayer request, or book her for speaking engagements.

This time of year I try to spend as much time in the turkey woods as possible. Since I speak and write to a lot of hunters, I really do need to be able to tell some stories that are not too far from the past. So, I just think of April and November as the two months that I have to go back to school to do continuing education – to keep my accreditation current- to keep abreast on any new tools and techniques. (That sounds really good. I wonder if I can use that on my wife?) But in all reality, I do try to hunt hard during the peak days of turkey and deer season. And my fishing is usually only in the later spring and summer months. But no matter when or how I sort out these periods, the truth is, if I am going to be relevant to today’s hunters and fishermen, I have to participate in this activity and not just draw on my knowledge and my experiences of the past. When talking to other hunters and fishermen, it doesn’t take long to determine if these men and women are current in their pursuits or if they are living on past experiences. And it is really embarrassing when someone tries to tell you how to go about hunting when it is evident they have not been in the woods in years. In these cases, it is always better to keep our opinions close to our chest and to disclaim any idea that we are beyond learning.
Carolina Family Care celebrates their 30th anniversary
By Loretta Cozart
Dr. Deepak R. Gelot’s practice, Carolina Family Care, at 707 W. King Street, will proudly celebrate a remarkable milestone, its 30th anniversary, on April 10.
This also reminds me of many folks who are quick and loud to spout their ideas about God, Christianity, and Christians. Most of the time their discourse will start with the words; “Well, I believe…….” When this happens, just hold on because they are going to give you a rant for the ages. The problem, however, is most of their information comes from ancient experiences and very limited and stale knowledge. And while they are convinced, anyone who has enjoyed new experiences and has gained more knowledge will recognize quickly that their enthusiastic friend has a lot of thunder and lightning, but no rain. I think we all need to ask ourselves if what we believe about our faith is based upon present or past experiences. We may say that absolutely our faith is based upon a salvation experience that took place years ago. But if that is the limit of our experiences with God, we are very poor indeed. And what about our knowledge of Him? Again, is it based on only what we learned in the past or is it fresh and added to often. Only we know. No, I am wrong. A lot of people will know………. as soon as you open your mouth. A wise man once said, ““Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt”? I couldn’t have said it better. Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org
In a recent conversation with the Herald, Dr. Gelot reflected on his journey over the past three decades in Kings Mountain, which he embraces as his home. “I’ve been here for 30 years, serving many patients across three generations. My oldest patient is 108 years old,” he shared. Dr. Gelot is dedicated to enhancing the health and wellness of his patients and continues to welcome new ones. His care philosophy is to provide high-quality, comprehensive care to all his patients. He also specializes in Wellness, Aesthetics, Laser, Regenerative and Pain solutions.
The growth of his practice has been significant, particularly thanks to the support of his dedicated team and their commitment to patient care. “I would personally like to thank all who have helped me build a successful practice.”
Looking back, the Herald first announced his new practice on March 16, 1995, introducing Dr. Gelot to the community after he purchased the Mayse-Robinson
medical building across from Kings Mountain Hospital. At that time, he aimed to establish a modern family practice equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, welcoming new patients from the outset.
Dr. Gelot comes from a rich background, having been recruited by Cleveland Memorial Hospital in 1994. Dr. Gelot has been practicing Family Medicine at Carolina Family Care since 1995. He received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill in 1991 and completed his Family Medicine Residency at the Carilion Health System (UVA-1994) in Roanoke, VA. He is board-certified in Family Medicine and holds a North Carolina medical license, firmly establishing his con-
nection to the community through his affiliation with Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby and various professional organizations. He continues to learn and study future therapies and offers one of the most advanced practices in our area.
A proud graduate of Gujarat University in India and Western Carolina University at Cullowhee, Dr. Gelot earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1991. Besides his passion for medicine, he enjoys reading, traveling, and cheering for his favorite Tar Heel sports teams. His daughter Monica and her husband Luke recently welcomed a new baby, who proudly shares the family’s connection to Chapel Hill.
Dr. Gelot and his wife Tammy also have a son, Alex.
As Carolina Family Care celebrates this significant anniversary, we invite you to join in the festivities and recognize Dr. Gelot’s unwavering commitment to bettering the health of our community for the past 30 years - and beyond!
Dr. Gelot continues to welcome patients. For more information about the services his practice offers, call 704-734-0010.

Jabarr Adams named New Head Coach of Yetis Men’s Basketball
In a recent press conference , Cleveland Community College President Dr. Jason Hurst officially announced Jabarr Adams as the new Head Coach of the Yetis Men’s Basketball program. Adams succeeds former head coach Grayson Pierce.
Adams, who joined the Yetis in 2024 as Associate Head Coach, brings a dynamic blend of collegiate and high school coaching experience, coupled with a passion for mentoring student-athletes and fostering success on and off the court.
“Coach Adams is not only an exceptional coach, he is an outstanding leader and educator,” said Dr. Hurst. “His dedication to student success, both academically and athletically, aligns perfectly with the mission of Yetis Athletics and Cleveland Community College.”
Coach Adams’ coaching résumé spans over a decade, including:
• Nine years as an NCAA assistant coach, competing in top-tier conferences such as the Peach Belt and Mid-American.
• Five NCAA Division II
tournament appearances.
• Development of 16 allconference collegiate players.
• Seventeen athletes who have gone on to sign professional basketball contracts.
Before transitioning to the college ranks, Adams made a significant mark in high school basketball:
• Seven years as a head coach at West Cabarrus and Mallard Creek High Schools.
• One year as assistant head coach at Ashbrook High School.
• Ten all-conference players coached during his high school tenure.
In addition to his coaching duties, Adams serves as an instructor in the Health and Physical Education department at Cleveland Community College, further reinforcing his commitment to holistic student development.

“I’m honored and excited to lead this program,” said Adams. “We have a strong foundation and a talented group of student-
athletes who are hungry to grow. My goal is to build a culture of discipline, respect, and resilience— values that extend to the classroom and far beyond the hardwood.”
As the Yetis turn the page to a new chapter, the program is poised for continued growth and competitive excellence under Adams’ leadership.
“Coach Adams has an incredible ability to connect with student-athletes and bring out the best in them—both as players and as young men,” said Andy Gardner, Athletics Director at Cleveland Community College. “His experience at every level of the game, combined with his integrity and leadership, make him the right choice to lead Yetis Men’s Basketball into its next chapter. We’re proud to have him at the helm and expect continued success in the classroom and on the court.”

Attract winged friends with these bird feeders
Bsnacks to supplement what birds naturally find in the wild guarantees up close and personal interactions with the scores of species that call neighborhoods home.
Bird feeders are particularly important in colder climates and during wintertime when food may be scarce. Keeping birds well fed helps them survive over winter and continue to repopulate in the spring. Bird feeding isn’t all for the birds, either. Ashley Dayer, an associate professor in the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation at Virginia Tech, argues that feeding birds also is a benefit to humans because it stimulates compassion for the animals.
The type of bird feeder a person places in the yard determines which species may be drawn to the property. The following are various types of feeders to consider.
Suet feeders
Suet cakes are highenergy food sources that attract birds like woodpeckers and nuthatches. They are particularly beneficial in colder months or regions where birds need extra fat for energy. These cage-like feeders snap around the rectangular suet cake and hang from a pole or tree.
Ground feeder
Ground feeders are simple screen-bottomed
trays that sit several inches off of the ground or on a deck to help keep seeds and grain from coming in contact with droppings. Ground feeders are a favorite of juncos, sparrows, goldfinches, and cardinals, among others.
Sugar water feeder
These feeders come in different shapes, from tubes to round dishes, and are magnets to hummingbirds. They typically have red coloring to be more attractive to those high-speed flyers.
Nyjer bird feeder
Small birds like goldfinches love to dine on nyjer seeds, which are tiny, black thistle seeds. These feeders are tubeshaped mesh socks designed to hold this specific seed. The small feeding ports prevent seed waste and cater to the small beaks of finches.
Hopper bird feeder
These are the feeders many people think of when they envision bird feeders. Hopper bird feed-
ers hold a large amount of seed and often have a roof or a design that mimics a house or barn. The covered design helps to keep seeds dry and might be the best hanging feeder for people who live in areas with a lot of rain. Hoppers will attract blue jays, grackles, cardinals, and blackbirds.
Tube feeders
Tube feeders will attract an array of birds. They are cylindrical in shape with various ports to enable birds to perch and feed.
Window and smart bird feeders
These types of bird feeders attach to windows to allow homeowners to view the birds up close. Smart varieties have cameras on the feeders that will send a feed via an app to a smart phone or computer. Some even may identify the bird species on the feeder at any given point in time.
Bird feeders provide enjoyment for bird watchers and nutritious food various species.
Spring cleaning tips and tricks
Spring is a time of year when change is in the air. Trees are budding, plants are flowering, and homes laden with dark or heavy fabrics and clutter could use some lightening up.
Spring cleaning projects are popular this time of year as residents take inventory of their living spaces and aim to declutter, clean and increase efficiency. Some people find the prospect of getting organized overwhelming. Here are some tips that can help anyone master spring cleaning.
• Create a plan. Make a checklist and establish a cleaning plan of attack. Focus on areas that are not regularly cleaned, as they probably need a little attention.
• Assemble your cleaning kit. Spring cleaning can be slowed down considerably if you don’t have all of your equipment at the ready. Items to have on hand include an all-purpose cleaner, concentrated cleaner,
microfiber cloths, paper towels, mop, vacuum, dusters, and a squeegee. Adjust your equipment based on the task at hand.
• Curate your cleaning playlist. Create a playlist with songs that will get you moving and motivated to clean.
• Work from top to bottom. Work efficiently by cleaning shelves, ceiling fans and oth-
er elevated items first, as dust and debris will trickle down and need to be cleaned next.
• Purchase or rent a carpet cleaner. According to the experts at Clean That Up, carpets help filter indoor air by trapping debris and allergens. By deep cleaning carpets, homeowners can improve

The benefits of lighting up your landscape
know there’s no shortage of ways to tweak a property. Some homeowners may lament that the work associated with home ownership is never done, but owning a house also provide endless opportunities to upgrade the spaces people call home.
Landscape lighting has become increasingly popular in recent years. That popularity is undoubtedly due to a number of variables, and each highlights a benefit of installing landscape lighting around a property.
• Affordability: Some may think of big budget projects like kitchen remodels or room additions when pondering home renovations. Such projects can have a dramatic impact on the look and feel of a home, but landscape lighting can be equally transformative at a fraction of the cost of larger undertakings. The home renovation experts at Angi. com estimate the average landscape lighting project costs around $4,000, making affordability a notable benefit of the project.
• Appearance: There’s no denying the aesthetic appeal of a well-lit landscape at night. Landscape lighting can be utilized to draw attention to awe-inspiring components of a landscape, whether it’s natural features like gardens and foliage or
manmade components like architectural features. Improved appearance can increase curb appeal, which is often associated with how a home looks during daylight hours. But photographs of a well-lit nighttime landscape can impress buyers as well.
• Cost savings: Landscape lighting might help homeowners reduce the cost of their homeowners insurance. Researchers at PolicyGenius.com found that insurance companies typically offer a discount of 2 to 5 percent to homeowners who install a home security system. Insurance providers may offer additional savings to homeowners who pair such systems with landscape lighting, which can be a deterrent to burglars who prefer to operate under a cloak of darkness.
• Safety: Insurance firms may discount premiums because of landscape lighting because they view it as a deterrent to potential crimi-
nals. But landscape lighting also makes moving around a property at night safer for residents and guests. Lighting can be used to illuminate walkways, outdoor living rooms, patios around pools, and other areas where residents and guests will be walking at night, which can reduce the risk of falls and injuries that may result from such spills.
• ROI: Savvy homeowners consider a renovation’s return on investment before deciding to go forward with a project. Studies vary, but the National Association of Realtors indicates landscape lighting can recoup as much as 70 percent of homeowners’ investment in the project at resale. When viewed through the lens of ROI, the cost of installing landscape lighting is even less.
How to establish a peaceful backyard retreat
Backyards have undergone quite a transformation over the last decade-plus. The days when patios and decks were all a backyard living space had to offer are largely a thing of the past, as homeowners have realized just how valuable it can be to commit to a stunning backyard.
The real estate experts at Zillow estimate that homes with backyard features such as outdoor televisions, outdoor showers and outdoor kitchens command 3.1 percent more than expected upon reaching the market. If 3.1 percent doesn’t sound like a lot, it actually equates to nearly $11,000 on a typical home. But there’s more to gain than money when converting a backyard space into a relaxing respite. Such spaces can provide a welcoming escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, all the while giving homeowners and residents a comfortable space to soak in the great outdoors. With that in mind, homeowners can take the following steps to establish a peaceful backyard retreat.
move, trees and hedges that are crowding the backyard and making it feel claustrophobic or giving it an unkempt look. Aim for a landscape that affords a balance of sun and shade so the space is as comfortable as possible throughout the day.
koi ponds to fountains to hot tubs. Homeowners can identify which feature best aligns with their idea of relaxation and then work with a landscape architect to ensure it’s installed in their backyard oasis.
Landscape lighting adds notable aesthetic appeal to a home at a fraction of the cost of other renovation projects. The benefits such lighting provides make the project one every homeowner can consider.
• Refresh the landscape. Even if your vision is centered on outdoor furniture and a space that accommodates movie nights under the stars, it’s still best to refresh the existing landscape if it needs a little upkeep. Overgrown trees, hedges and bushes can create the same cluttered vibe that dominates interior spaces overrun with items. If necessary, work with a local tree service or landscape architect to trim, or even re-
• Set up multiple gathering spaces, if possible. Once a backyard retreat is established, everyone who calls the property home might find the space hard to resist. Keep this in mind when planning the space and aim to set up multiple gathering spaces. An outdoor kitchen with a nearby dinner table can be a great space to enjoy al fresco dining, but a separate area to read a book or watch a movie or ballgame can make the space more versatile. Some may want to relax away from the noise of the grill area, and multiple gathering spaces ensures there’s always a peaceful spot to unwind out back.
• Add a water feature. Running water has a way of calming the nerves, and that’s good to keep in mind when planning a backyard retreat. Water features run the gamut from garden ponds to
• Don’t forget shade. Temperatures are rising in many areas of the globe, and that’s worth noting when planning a backyard retreat. Even the most ardent sun worshippers likely won’t want to be exposed to the sun at all times when relaxing in their backyards. Strategically chosen means of providing shade can make spaces enjoyable all day long. Consider umbrellas, gazebos, pergolas, and even retractable awnings to cover patios and decks when the sun is at its highest each afternoon. If you plan to spend ample time in the grass, make that more enjoyable by planting shade trees, which also can protect the grass from drought and make it more comfortable underfoot.
A relaxing backyard retreat can make for an ideal space to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Wood floor cleaning guide Tips for the gardening beginner
Wood floors are coveted for a number of reasons, not the least of which is their aesthetic appeal. Many people prefer wood flooring because dust and dirt do not become trapped as they would in carpet fibers, seemingly making wood flooring easy to clean.
Most floors endure a lot of wear and tear. However, with care, wood flooring may last for decades. Part of that care includes understanding how to properly clean and maintain wood floors so they look their best. The following are some steps for keeping wood floors as pristine as possible.
• Remove shoes. It’s a good idea to remove shoes, particularly heels, when walking on wood floors. Sharp heels, cleats and other shoes can scratch or dent wood flooring. All shoes can track in excess dirt, which can contribute to a lack of luster as well.
• Sweep or vacuum frequently. The experts at The Spruce suggest sweeping, vacuuming or dust mopping wood floors daily. Dirt and dust make floors more slippery, and dirt or sand particles can lead to scratches on the floor.
• Learn your flooring type. Wood flooring is broken down into three main categories: solid hardwood flooring, engi-
neered hardwood flooring and laminate wood flooring. Traditional hardwood is made of planks or strips of any hardwood covered in a wood stain. Engineered flooring is manufactured by gluing together several thin plies of hardwood. Laminate flooring looks like wood but generally is a veneer or a photographic image of wood covered by a thick layer of melamine resin over fiberboard.
• Skip harsh cleansers. Regardless of flooring type, most are covered by a sealant that can become streaky or dull if the wrong cleanser is used. Avoid chlorine bleach, ammonia, pine oil, or undiluted vinegar. Instead, choose a cleanser that is specifically recommended for the flooring type. Do not allow water or solutions to sit on the floor, as that can contribute to staining and warping. With laminate flooring, avoid wet mopping unless the flooring is specifically marked as being able to be wet. The underlayers
of laminate flooring can warp if it gets wet.
• Damp is better than wet. When cleaning wood flooring, use a damp rather than a soaking wet mop. Better Homes & Gardens says standing water can damage wood surfaces.
• Use the hard floor setting. When vacuuming, adjust the vacuum to a hard flooring setting, which will not engage the brush rollers on the vacuum head. Rollers can scratch wood and laminate flooring, advises The Home Depot.
• Use repair products as needed. Scratch and repair kits can fill in small scratches. Wood floor polish and wood waxes also can revitalize worn floors. Again, check that the product is safe for your particular flooring before use.
Wood floors bring warmth to a home and are very popular. Cleaning them correctly can add to their appeal and longevity.
Gardening is a popular hobby all over the world. Ruby Home Luxury Real Estate estimates there are 71.5 million gardening households in the United States alone. That translates to around 185.9 million people engaged in some form of gardening, which places the U.S. among other countries where gardening is wildly popular, including Australia and China.
A greater number of people are showing interest in gardening, which is a rewarding hobby that’s good for the mind and the body. Those who are new to gardening may need a crash course to get started. These pointers can help anyone foster a newfound passion for gardening.
Choose the best location
Spend time in the yard and decide where to house a garden. A far-off corner may get the most sun, but will you forget about the garden if it is too far away? Ideally, the garden should be located where it will get at least six to eight hours of sun each day. There also should be a water source nearby. The spot also should be convenient so that it is easy to go and pick vegetables or prune flowers.
TIPS
From Page 12 the indoor air quality of their homes. Use a carpet cleaner on a warm, dry day so that windows can be opened and cross breezes will help dry the damp rug.
• Clean windows. Wash windows inside and out and utilize their screens to help brighten indoors spaces.
• Deep clean the kitchen. Clean out and disinfect the refrigerator by wiping it down with warm water and baking soda or a vinegar-and-water solution. While in the kitchen, set the oven to the self-clean function so it becomes cleaner as well.
Homeowners also can focus on cleaning curtains (including shower curtains), steam-
Start small If you’re new to gardening, begin with a small garden footprint so that you can get your feet wet. A raised garden bed can be a good starting point because it is contained and easy to maintain. As your experience (and garden) grows, you can add to the garden size the next time around.
Amend the soil
It’s possible but unlikely that the soil in the backyard is the perfect mix to grow healthy plants. It’s more likely that the garden will need some soil modification. You can test the soil makeup with do-it-yourself kits or work with a garden center. A garden typically requires a mix of compost to add nutrients to the dirt; peat moss or coconut coir to help with water retention and to make the soil lighter; and vermiculite that helps to retain water. A compost bin set up at the same time as the garden allows gardeners to continually produce nutrient-rich food to add to the garden.
Plant starter guide It’s best to keep a few things in mind when planning the garden. Think about what will grow well in your climate. Consider how big the garden

will be and the size of mature plants. A small garden will not be able to accommodate corn, for example. Also, how would you like the space to look and what will be its function? Is this a purely aesthetic garden or one that will be food-bearing?
Start seeds inside
If you’ll be starting a garden from seeds, it’s best to start indoors before your region’s frost-free date. This way the delicate plants will get the needed care and can establish before they go outdoors in the ground. Keep them humid by covering the seedlings in plastic wrap. You can start the seeds in different containers, even empty egg cartons. Transplant to larger containers after the seedlings grow a second set of leaves. Once you’re free from overnight frost, you can place the established, strong seedlings in the ground.
An automatic watering system, such as a timer hooked up to the sprinkler, can keep the garden well watered, which increases the chances of success. Then it will only be a matter of weeks before the garden can be enjoyed throughout the season.
