Progress being made on Cramerton Historical Museum By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Work is continuing to make the dream of an historical museum in Cramerton a reality, but just exactly when the facility will open is still uncertain thanks in large part to COVID19. Nonetheless, small groups of Cramerton Historical Society members are beginning to gather artifacts and figure out how they will be displayed at the museum site in the lower level of the Community Center at 1 Julian St. The CHS’s first president, Jeff Ramsey explained how the society and museum museum ideas were hatched. “In 2015 we had a very successful Cramerton Centennial Celebration. Every-

one enjoyed the 100 year time display from 19152015,” he said. “It portrayed Cramerton’s rich history and artifacts during the celebration. We decided to create a non-profit organization, Cramerton’s Historical Society, in 2015 to share our history with surrounding communities, since we did not have a place for a museum. Our focus was celebrating the 100 year landmarks in Cramerton with fundraiser events by presenting them with historical markers, such as Maymont’s mansion from 1917 to 2017 and Mayworth / Cramerton’s School from 1919 to 2019. Multiple events were held at local elementary schools to share the history of Cramerton. We were able to help

spearhead the Cramerton Veteran memorial in 2018 with the Town of Cramerton to honor all the Veterans of Cramerton. Cramerton is very excited to have a museum enabling us to provide events and display our rich history and artifacts of Cramerton. We want to thank the Town of Cramerton for all their support and for providing us a Cramerton Historical Society members Richard Atkinson and Ted Reece are just two of the place for the museum.” many folks working hard to make the museum a reality. First Baptist Church Mt. Holly rebuild nearing completion By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Gov. Cooper extends Phase 2 again Last Wednesday, Governor Roy Cooper announced that North Carolina will remain paused in Safer At Home Phase 2 for another 5 weeks as students and staff return to schools, colleges and universities and the state doubles down on efforts to decrease COVID-19 numbers. “Other states that lifted restrictions quickly have had to go backward as their hospital capacity ran dangerously low and their cases jumped higher. We will not make that mistake in North Carolina,” said Governor Cooper. “In keeping with our dimmer switch approach with

schools opening, and in order to push for decreasing numbers which will keep people healthier and boost our economy, North Carolina will remain paused in Safer At Home Phase 2 for 5 weeks.” Dr. Mandy Cohen, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services shared an update on North Carolina’s data trends. Dr. Cohen explained that while some of North Carolina’s numbers have mostly leveled, any progress is fragile as other states have shown with sudden and devastating surges in viral spread. It won’t be long now. That’s a good way to succinctly put the current state of construction regarding the repair and rebuild of Mt. Holly’s First Baptist Church. July 21, 2020 marked the fourth anniversary of a fire that destroyed the sanctuary of First Baptist and damaged its Education Building. The fire was one of the biggest in Mt. Holly history and took 150 firefighters from 16 different departments several hours to control. The fire was eventually blamed on a propane torch used by a crew repairing the roof. The sanctuary building was gutted but the exterior walls stood firm. Work took place last year to clear the twisted rubble from the sanctuary interior and allow structural engineers to assess the building’s See FIRST BAPTIST, Page 6

OPINION We yakked in the lake By Shelton Fisher It was a Saturday like any other. The sweltering Summer heat was beating down and simmering above the road in heatwaves. Kimberly called me on the way back from hauling yard waste off to the landfill in Dallas and asked what I wanted to do for the remainder of the day. It didn’t take a lot of thought before I blurted out my answer, as I just bought something I hadn’t had in a long time. I finally had a kayak that would hold my weight and it was time to hit the water. Several years ago, we lived in apartments that were near Rankin Lake Park in Gastonia and we took on the notion to buy kayaks of our own after trying it out at the Whitewater Center. Things were fantastic and we took the boats to multiple drop-offs until one day we went to the South Fork River. We had identical, eight-foot long kayaks that held 200 pounds each. Kimberly was and still is perfectly fine paddling in hers, but I on the other hand… I weighed 196 pounds at the time and the drop-off was a steep decline. After getting in, I pushed off and leaned back but as my nose began to enter the water, it almost didn’t begin to pop back out of the water even though I was leaning back as far as I could. When it finally was level with the water, it was EVEN with the river. One wrong move and this ship was sinking. I recently decided to sell that kayak to a coworker and purchased a used ten-foot long kayak that holds 250 pounds. We live just above Mountain Island Lake, so it only made sense to take a trip down to the boat landing. Upon arrival, we walked down to the drop-off and shoved our vessels off into the mystic. Away we went under the bridge that we’ve traveled across our entire lives to travel between home and Charlotte. The entire time we were paddling, all I could think about was how wild it was how I had ridden across that bridge so often and wondered what was down here. From underneath the traffic roared like jet streams, steady with occasional bumps where the bridge is joined.

Thursday, August 13, 2020

Birds had built nests on the joists that hold the bridge up, unbothered by the sounds and vibrations above. We paddled out to the first piece of land that didn’t have a “No Trespassing” sign and got out for a second to check out the sights. Boats were driving and other kayakers were paddling around enjoying the day while

the boat landing. Here’s a not-so-pro tip: when you’re in Shelton Fisher a kayak, take into consideration that however far you paddle out you will have to paddle back

others relaxed on their back patios, watching from afar. We came across a blackberry bush and sampled the offerings she had to give before we set off again. Further down the lake, there were houses being built along the lakefront while other parts of the lake remained undisturbed. There were no signs of fish or wildlife for the abundance of human activity, but as we paddled towards the dam we finally came to the namesake of the lake. According to the image on Google Maps, Mountain Island a big piece of land. We pulled our boats onto the sandy shore of the island and took in the sight of people enjoying time with their families on plots of land that haven’t been bothered by the disruption of development. It was nice to see the sight of families teaching kids to fish instead of Fortnite, skip rocks instead of arguing, unplug from the chaos for a while, and not glue themselves to Fox News or CNN for once. After taking some pictures, we decided to head back to

equally as far. We were exhausted by the time we got back, and I could tell that I hadn’t done this in years. I will most definitely be back out on the water. If you see me out there, say hi some time! Please be safe out there and be mindful of other boaters both big and small! We may have different boats, but we’re all out to do the same thing; cool off and have fun!

I can’t believe I said that Did you ever have a really bad day? I wasn’t having a bad day. Stretch that thirty times. I was having an exceptionally bad month. It started off bad with two conversations. I walked into a meeting that I knew was going to be difficult. It was worse than that. Just as I was recovering from that incident, I heard some bad news from an individual. I was overwhelmed. I was broken. I felt devastated. I was trying to make sense of life and couldn’t get 1 + 1 to equal 2. A week later my sister was visiting from Virginia. She came because we all thought my 90+ year old mother was dying. We thought she was in her final days. She’s not. While Lucille was visiting with me, we sat down and began to discuss everything that happened over the previous many days. As the conversation continued, and without using a filter (which if you know me is always operating) I looked at her and said, “Why does God hate me?” I couldn’t believe that sentence came out of my mouth. Without missing a beat, I said to her, “I know He doesn’t hate me but why am I going through what I am currently experiencing?” I felt like Job hearing reports that his livestock had been destroyed and his children had all been killed. The only one who lived was his wife who said, “Curse God

JOIN US FOR OUR FIRST ANNUAL

CRUISE-IN FREE ENTRY

and be done with it.” I decided life was so bad, I would read the book of Job. His friends accused him of sin resulting in the bad things he was experiencing (if that’s what you call a friend). Then Job decides to take on God. He’s almost like a seventh grader saying, “Bring it on”. But my favorite part is chapter 38. If you ever need an illustration of assertive behavior, read Job 38. God is not passive which can be described as “Lose/Win” He doesn’t say, “Oh Job, life has been so hard. Come here and let me hold you and comfort you. I am so very sorry for what you are experiencing. There there. Let me make all the bad go away.” God is also not aggressive. He doesn’t attack him as in a “Win/Lose” scenario. He doesn’t scream at him. Rather, God is assertive in His style of communicating. That can be described as “Win/Win”. God is very direct in his style. He speaks from a perspective of clearly communicating His position without slamming Job against the wall. I like verse 3 that says, “Brace yourself like a man; I will question you and you shall answer me.”

I think too Tony Marciano often in Christian circles we are passive in our communication. We don’t say what we are thinking for fear of offending the other person or hurting the other person’s feelings. The net result is a poor relationship. Patrick Lencioni in his book “Five Dysfunctions of a Team” explains that the base level of the dysfunctional pyramid is “Absence of Trust.” Trust can only be developed through vulnerability. Sharing what is really going on rather than saying what you think the other person wants to hear. Six weeks later from my original meltdown with my sister I was having lunch with a friend. She asked me what I thought of a particular situation we were both involved in. I am great at spinning anything and could have answered with a politically correct answer. Instead, I was brutally honest. God doesn’t hate me. I know He deeply, deeply loves me. I just happen to live in a fallen world. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Mt. Holly PD gathering school supplies

By Rev. Trent Rankin

Officers of the Mt. Holly Police Department have started a school supply drive called “Books & Badges”. This school supply drive will be for the four schools within Mount Holly jurisdiction. A box is located in the MHPD lobby for donations of any new school supplies you would like to give. Pens, pencils, colored pencils, 3 subject notebooks, 3 ring binders, loose-leaf paper, crayons, hand sanitizers, tissues, and disinfectant spray are needed. When school restarts, MHPD separate the school supplies and distribute them to Mount

When we think of things such as integrity, character, and morals, these are the values that define who we are. These values are reflected in how we act, the way we treat others, and the way we believe. Our character and integrity are everything to us. Without such values, we would have no foundation. As followers of Jesus, our values should reflect Him to a world apart from God. In 1 Samuel 24:1-15, David found himself on the run from King Saul. Saul knew God wanted to replace him as king with David, because he had sinned and rebelled against God. Saul took an army of 3,000 men and pursued David to the area of Engedi. One day, Saul took rest inside a local cave. Little did he know, David and his men were in the back of the same cave. David went to where Saul was, and clipped off a portion of his robe. Saul later left, and David came from the cave and called out to Saul. David told Saul he had been given an opportunity to kill Saul while he was in the cave, but he did not. He showed him the part of his robe he had clipped. David would not raise his hand against

the anointed king of Israel. David told Saul he would let God judge between them, and that God would plead his cause. In this instance, we see why David was a man after Rev. Trent Tankin God’s own heart. David was a man of integrity. He had the perfect opportunity to kill Saul, yet he would not, even though Saul hated him and tried to kill him. People will hate us too. Saul hated David because he was jealous of him. People will often hate us for reasons that we cannot control. We cannot control what others do, yet we can maintain our integrity and values no matter what. David lived for God, as a good moral man, from the time he was a boy until he was an old man. We live in a world today that is full of chaos and uncertainty. We never know what one day will hold to the next. We cannot control others, or our circumstance, yet we can control us. We can maintain who we are, no matter where we are. Just as David showed so long ago, we can always live for God. No one can ever take away our character, integrity, or morals. Let an uncertain world see God in you. You never know who you will lead to Jesus by the life you live!

Cotton Ginning Days Festival called off The Gaston County Parks and Recreation Department announced today it is canceling the popular Cotton Ginning Days Festival this fall due to the continued impacts of COVID-19. The three-day festival in recent years has drawn more than 30,000 attendees to enjoy antique tractors, a still-functioning cotton gin from 1900, craft and food

vendors, plus live music and much more. County staff had worked for months on trying to come up with alternatives for how to safely host the event, but given the continued high number of COVID-19 cases in both Gaston County and the state, leaders determined it was in the best interest of everyone involved to wait until 2021.

“This was a really hard decision,” said Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Hart. “We know how much the community loves this event and we’re heartbroken to have to cancel it for this year. But we know next year’s event is going to come back even bigger and better than ever and we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2021.”

Gaston County DHHS unveils new COVID dashboard The Gaston County Department of Health & Human Services (Gaston DHHS) has launched a new dashboard to share COVID-19 data and information with the community. The dashboard is now live and will be updated daily Monday through Friday. The move to this new dashboard has been several weeks in the making. Gaston DHHS is hopeful this dashboard will provide a better interface for the local data they have been collecting. In addition to being more user-

friendly, the dashboard also includes several new figures including percentage of positive tests, hospitalizations, and an interactive heat map. “One of the key roles of public health during this health crisis is to provide timely and accurate information about COVID and its impact on our community, shared Gaston County Public Health Director Steve Eaton. “We are hopeful that this new dashboard will help people understand the true burden of COVID on our community

so they can make good decisions about protecting themselves and others. You can access the new site by visiting www.gastongov.com/coronavirus and clicking on the dashboard icon. Gaston DHHS would like to especially thank Naomi Paul, GIS Analyst with Gaston County’s IT Department and Marti Morris, Data Analyst for Gaston DHHS, for their hard work on this project and ongoing commitment to sharing critical data with the public.

Beam Construction was picked to do the actual work. The rebuild has included several important upgrades. One is the roof structure that’s now made of heavy duty steel beams. The other is a band of concrete around the uppermost rows of bricks. The concrete will tie the walls together for extra strength. But those are just technical details. What’s actually happened in the time from when the twisted and charred rubble inside the church was hauled off and the rebuild began is amazing. A look inside the church sanctuary last week revealed a stunning, beautiful, awe inspiring and reverential feeling at what workers have accomplished. “We’ve come a long way,” First Baptist pastor Dr. Kendell Cameron said in a huge understatement. Blackened wood and plaster has been replaced by beautiful cream-colored walls accented by rich hardwood trim. The sanctuary ceiling is the crowning touch and is shaped like a Greek cross. Recessed lighting gives the sanctuary ceiling a celestial look and feel. New windows currently have clear glass, but new stained glass ones will be placed on the inside of them. The new windows will be similar to the original 1928 ones and are being made by Statesville Stained Glass. “Having the stained glass

The church organ was destroyed in the fire and Schantz Organ Co. based in Orrville, Ohio has started creating a bigger and better one. However, because of COVID, the company had to shut down for a spell. Nonetheless, the instrument will still be coming soon. “It will be here in a couple of months,” Cameron said. New pews for the sanctuary are slated for delivery any day now. Several of the church’s original chandeliers were saved and have been installed in the sanctuary. Other spaces in the church have received rebuilds as well. New restrooms, classrooms, flooring, and hallways are nearly complete. One of the main stained glass windows will look like this. Building committee chair Reeves McGlohon estimates the bill for the rebuild will be $5-5.5 million. So, when exactly will First Baptist be ready? That’s a good question and the answer still depends on what happens regarding the COVID impact. “Beam has been here every day,” McGlohon said. “However, their suppliers have The front of the sanctuary as seen from the balcony. been impacted by COVID. We still hope to be ready by early fall.” Having First Baptist rise from the ashes has always been more than restoring a building. It’s always been about faith. “We are deeply excited to have a future here,” Cameron said. “COVID put a damper on the near future but we plan on McGlohon and Cameron in the sanctuary after the rubble was cleared. long future.”

MUSEUM From Page 1 Time marched on and work began on the museum until COVID stepped in. “We had hoped to open this summer,” said former CHS president Richard Atkinson. “But we haven’t been able to have group meetings and are a little behind schedule. We are playing it by ear and when things open up we will hit the ground running.” According to Atkinson, the museum will be strong on visuals including plenty of vintage photos from Cramerton’s past. A good example of this is the huge, black and white aerial photo of Cramer Mills that covers one entire wall of the museum’s main space. “Allen Millican provided the photo and Ken Parrott of Bedgood Advertising made the mural,” Atkinson said. Another feature of the museum will be large, foldable panels that will have photos and graphics attached. There will be six double panels measuring 80x30 inches. Subject matter on the panels will be changed periodically. One big item on the museum’s to do list is turning a small room into a replica of Stuart Cramer’s office when he ran the mills. His imposing desk is currently in the Cramerton Town Hall. Other items planned for display will naturally include

a tribute to Cramerton’s famous khaki cloth that was used to make countless WWII uniforms. Another, larger room on the Community Center’s lower level is currently used by senior citizens as a fellowship hall for their weekly lunch gatherings. One wall of that space has already been covered with large, framed, archival photos showing things such as the hotel and rail depot that were once in Cramerton. The photos were previously in the recreation center gym across the street. “We plan to use the fellowship hall for special events,” said Atkinson. Speaking of special events, the museum plans

several fundraisers as soon as things return to “normal”. “We plan to have a fish fry this fall,” Atkinson said. “Another fundraiser will be a Christmas event at the historic C.C. Dawson House.” Plenty of people in Cramerton and elsewhere are licking their chops at the thought of having a nice place to go and see the town’s rich history. Hopefully that dream will become a reality sooner rather than later.

South Point High School announces Spring Sports NCHSAA individual Scholar Athletes By Charlotte Sautner

These Girl Scouts are just one of the many groups that has come to volunteer with Keep Belmont Beautiful over the years. This year looks a little different, with new rules about staying socially distant, wearing masks and remote learning for some of our schools. Keep Belmont Beautiful is still here, still active with the Main Street program “Flower Power”, as well as targeted roadside cleanups that KBB volunteers are doing. If you as Belmont residents see an area that needs attention, please let KBB know either email or by phone. KBB needs you to be our eyes and be advocates for keeping our city clean. Keep Belmont Beautiful is located at 1401 East Catawba Street 28012. Phone 704-825-8587 or email keepbelmontbeautiful@gmail.com.

South Point High School’s athletes are not only excellent on the field they are excellent off the field in the classroom. They are true scholar athletes. Usually the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete program recognizes varsity teams and individual athletes for their excellence in the classroom. However, due to the fact that the spring sports season was canceled only individual Scholar Athletes will be announced. To be an individual Scholar Athlete, the athlete must have a 3.5 weighted GPA for the designated semester. South Point had 123 individual NCHSAA Scholar Athletes.

Lynn Nichols of Gaston College wins 2020 Altrusa Award of Excellence Lynn Nichols, Associate Dean for Health and Human Services at Gaston College, is the recipient of the 2020 Award for Excellence presented by Altrusa International of Gastonia. The award was announced in February at the annual Gaston College Employee Appreciation and Recognition Ceremony. The award was “in recognition of outstanding service to students and representation of the highest ideals of Gaston College and Altrusa International.” The Altrusa Award for Excellence recognizes an outstanding Gaston College faculty or staff member who personifies the College’s mission, vision, and values. Nominees are judged on their involvement with Gaston College students and their positive impact on the students’ lives. They must exhibit an enthusiasm for life, concern for others, and a commitment to the concept

of lifelong learning. They are also evaluated on their extraordinary accomplishments and contributions to the College, community, or other civic activities. Penny Ewing, an Instructor in the Medical Assisting program, nominated Nichols for the Altrusa Award. Ewing said that Nichols is “the epitome of what a lifelong learner and teacher is. She stands above all others in her commitment to hard work and being committed to student success.” Nichols is a first-generation high school graduate. She enrolled in the Gaston College Medical Assisting Program in her late twenties. The Department Chair at the time, Betty Jones, was one of her instructors. “She saw potential in me as a student that no one else had ever recognized,” said Nichols, “and she convinced me that I could succeed in college.” After graduating from Gaston

Gaston County Family YMCA opens fitness centers into the facility, the system will show they have a medical reason for using the centers. The Gaston County Family YMCA is using the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services’ definition of medical professional, which lists several positions: licensed physicians, licensed physician’s assistants or nurse practitioners, licensed nurses, licensed chiropractors, licensed dietitians, licensed respiratory care therapists, licensed psychologists, licensed clinical mental health counselors, licensed occupational therapists, licensed physical therapists, licensed recreational therapists and licensed massage therapists. “The YMCA recognizes that many members are in need of a safe place to continue an exercise regiment,” Padgett said. “That is why the wellness centers are opened at limited capacity. We have a lot of members that need to exercise in a controlled environment, not at a heat index of 110 degrees.” While centers will open for those who need them, Padgett said they fully comply with Gov. Roy Cooper’s Executive Order 151, which allowed medical exceptions for the use of gym

and fitness centers. The Cherryville, Stowe, and Warlick fitness centers will operate with a reservation system, Members can go online or call to reserve a time slot. Members also will be required to wear a mask while entering and leaving the building, in hallways and common areas. Members will not be required to wear a mask while exercising, but it is encouraged. The Gaston County Family YMCA has had a reopening plan ready since May. All branches have prepared to accommodate social distancing and will have health and safety measures in place. All equipment has been spaced so that the machines are at least 6 feet apart, if not more. Members will be given a bottle of cleaner and a cloth before they enter the fitness area. They will be instructed to clean any equipment before they use it and after. YMCA staffers will monitor the fitness center. Once a group has completed the time slot, staff members will clean the equipment before the next group goes in. All staffers will wear masks. The fitness centers are not the first services to be reopened at the YMCA. Pools and

Through the Gaston College Foundation, Altrusa International of Gastonia established an endowment to support the award in 1993, and the first recipient was selected in 1995. The organization also provides three scholarships to Gaston College students each year. The Gaston County Family YMCA has opened their indoor fitness centers at three locations for members with a medical need for exercise directed by a medical professional. On Friday, Aug. 7, three Gaston County Family YMCA locations opened indoor fitness centers at limited capacity to provide a place for members to exercise who need it, said YMCA CEO Sharon Padgett. But the YMCAs are not fully opened. “This is not an opening of the YMCA. We are opening for a small population of our members that need it for medical reasons and can show a note from a medical provider,” Padgett said. “To use the indoor fitness centers, Gaston County Family YMCA members must provide a note or prescription from a medical professional stating that the professional has prescribed physical exercise as a health regiment,” said Mary Moffitt, Stowe Family YMCA Executive Director. The note does not need to contain why the member needs to exercise. Members who need to use the indoor fitness centers will provide a note or prescription from a medical professional to YMCA staffers at the front desk. After becoming a full-time instructor, and with continued encouragement from Ms. Jones, Nichols obtained her master’s degree in Adult Education/Higher Education from Appalachian State University. Nichols served over 15 years as the lead clinical and lab instructor in Medical Assisting and then became the Coordinator for Medical Assisting, a position she held for five years. She has been the Associate Dean for the Health and Human Services division since 2016. “My educational philosophy includes the belief that it is my role as an instructor to provide a safe and respectful classroom environment conducive to learning,” said Nichols. “Students want to learn content that will be useful, meaningful and relevant to their life and interests. When teaching, I try to connect the learning content to life.” In her Altrusa Award nomination form, Ewing said that Nichols’ “hard work and commitment have been an inspiration, not only to myself but to others as well. I aspire to be to others what her example has been to many.” “Knowing what the Altrusa Award for Excellence represents, I am truly honored to have been nominated for and to be a recipient of the Altrusa Award,” said Nichols. “I believe my receiving this award is actually honor-

Belmont police issue scam alert

Gaston Christian baseball camp... Gaston Christiam School recently held a baseball camp. Afterwards, everyone cooled off by throwing snowballs and slurping icees. Everyone had a great time and the coaches taught the players a lot of skills.

Belmont PD has gotten reports that citizens are receiving fraudulent phone calls from scammers who are claiming to work for the Belmont Police Department. This tactic has been used across the nation and citizens have unfortunately fallen victim to the scheme. Scammers are able to spoof their numbers to present on caller ID as Belmont Police. Scammers will tell a story about a family member

who is in jail or hospital and need money for help or bail. Scammers may also try to convince you that you have a warrant for your arrest, requesting money to drop the charges. What to do if you get this call and are unsure? Do not give any personal information to the caller (name, date of birth, social security number, address, account numbers, etc...) Call Belmont PD’s non

emergency number (704)8253792 and ask to speak with an officer in person. Do not transfer money in any form. (Mail, MoneyGrams, Prepaid Cards, etc...) Report the call to the Federal Trade Commission. https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt For more information: https://www.consumer. ftc.gov/blog/2015/07/scammers-impersonate-police

Gaston College announces fall semester safety plan

Gaston College released its fall semester safety plan on Tuesday, July 28. The GC Safe Plan is a guide for campus safety and health to keep students and employees safe on campus during the coronavirus pandemic. The three-level implementation plan (Plan A – C) includes detailed measures to prevent or slow the spread of COVID-19. The GC Safe plan includes input from the College Community, recommendations from local, state, and federal agencies, including the NC Community College System, Gaston and Lincoln County Health Departments, NC Department of Health and Human Services, and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). “We are committed to the safety, health and well-being of our students, faculty and staff,” said Dr. John Hauser, president of Gaston College. “As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, our safety plan provides a strategic blueprint we can follow to be prepared to respond to current risks and

changes associated with the potential spread of COVID.” “In a collective effort by administration, faculty, and staff, we will continue to provide a caring, supportive, and safe environment that encourages our students to keep learning and to move forward with their academic goals. It’s also important for their families to know we are doing everything we can to promote health and safety which will protect them too. We must support each other and keep a positive attitude as we strive for success in the new normal,” said Dr. Hauser. Plan A will start the first day of the fall semester on Thursday, August 20. Multiple modes of instruction will be used including online, inperson, and hybrid, which is a combination of online and inperson classes. The plan outlines specific safety measures for in-person classes and labs including new seating layouts to promote social distancing.

Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols are also in place. The plan also strongly encourages that prior to coming onto one of Gaston College’s campuses, students, faculty, and staff participate in health screenings using a designated mobile app called CampusClear. Temperature checks may also be made a part of entering a campus or buildings. Other measures to prevent or slow the spread of COVID19 include practicing the 3Ws: Wear a face covering; Wait (practice social distancing); and Wash (hand washing and/or disinfecting). Hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed in all buildings at all campuses. To view the GC Safe Plan, visit www.gaston.edu or https://www.gaston.edu/ gcsafe/ Registration for Gaston College’s fall 2020 semester is open for returning and new students. Students can register until 6 p.m. on August 18. The fall semester begins on Thursday, August 20, 2020.

Carr Elementary upgrades... Crews have been busy this summer working on several school bond projects. If you have driven by Carr Elementary School in Dallas, you probably noticed the parking lot and driveway out front. It has been redone along with the sidewalk. Take a look at these “before and after” pictures that show the work in progress and how great it looks now. This is another example of how your support of the school bonds in 2018 is benefiting our schools. Gaston Schools photos

Cynthia Garcia of Mount Holly inducted into UK’s Alpha Lambda Delta Chapter The University of Kentucky’s Alpha Lambda Delta inducted 51 College of Arts & Sciences students during the spring 2020 semester. Among them was Cynthia

Garcia of Mount Holly, NC, with a major in International Studies. The induction ceremony, originally scheduled for March, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Celebrating academic excellence among first-year students, Alpha Lambda Delta was revived on UK’s campus in 2019 after being dormant for several years.

Alpha Lambda Delta has more than 280 chapters nationally, and the society has initiated more than 1 million students.

With temperatures over 90F, big straw hats were in style for workers putting a new roof on this part of the Mt. Holly Middle School building last week. The project was one of many repair jobs being done on Gaston County schools this summer. Photo by Alan Hodge
