Gertrude Harris has hit the century mark with style and grace By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

There have been a lot of changes in East Belmont over the decades and Gertrude Harris has seen them all which is not surprising given the fact she will be 100 years old on September 10. Gertrude’s parents were Claude and Martha Robinson. Like a lot of other folks in our area, her dad worked

in the mills while her mom kept house. Gertrude was one of eight kids. She has a sister, Sarah Shinn, who is in her mid-90s and lives in Charlotte. Gertrude attended East Belmont Elementary School and then went to Belmont High. She left to work at Acme Mill in North Belmont and retired for there at age 62. Gertrude’s grandfather

W . T . Robinson had a movie t h e a t e r Harris as a young in East “Blackie”. Belmont back in the 1920s. It was located on Catawba St. next to where Headhunters hair salon is now. “My sister and I went to the movies a lot,” Gertrude

Folks called her “Blackie “ due to her coal black hair. When she was 25 years old she married her husband John Harris in 1945. They had two kids, a boy and a

girl. He also worked in the textile industry and passed away in 1984. “We traveled quite a bit,” Gertrude said. “We went to See HARRIS, Page 4

The major remodeling project on the City of Belmont Public Works building at 1401 Catawba St. is entering its final phase. The 1980s era building, which has formerly occupied by Woodlawn Mills and Beltex Corp. has been used by Belmont as its public works headquarters for the past several years and a major remodeling project has transformed it from a huge concrete cavern into a modern, state of the art, efficient, spacious, and comfortable complex for the city’s business and its administrative staff. Gaston County Schools has announced its “Of the Year” award recipients for the 2020-2021 academic year. The Zoom video conferencing platform was used to inform the finalists of the winner in each “Of the Year” category: Teacher, New Teacher, Teacher Assistant, Principal, Assistant Principal, and Central Office Administrator. Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year Peter Jones, a biology, forensics, and physical science teacher at North Gaston High School, was chosen as the Gaston County Teacher of the Year, and Crystal Houser of Forestview High School was named the Gaston County Principal of the Year. Jones and Houser will represent Gaston County in

the Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year regional competitions. As the winners of the school district’s most prestigious awards for educators, Jones and Houser will receive the Wells Fargo Bank Educator Apple trophy and $1,250 from Wells Fargo to use for professional development. Jones joined Gaston County Schools in 2015. He is a graduate of Lee University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He says his secret to success in education is focusing on building relationships with students, parents, and colleagues. Houser joined Gaston County Schools in 1997, and before being appointed principal at Forestview, she served as the W.C. Friday See SCHOOLS, Page 9

OPINION

TODAY’S QUOTE: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. - Maya Angelou

My Opinion:

Pay attention!

I miss the county fair

Rev. Trent Rankin

County Fair marked the final time I will attempt any rides except the Ferris wheel (my fave anyway) and maybe the merry Alan Hodge go round. Several Banner-News Editor years ago we were at the fair and after eating a chili dog got on an amusement called the “Scrambler. Let me tell you, by the time I staggered off that contraption my intestines were well and truly scrambled and I stumbled around thoroughly discombobulated. To add insult to gastrointestinal injury the ride operator, a gent with teeth of an orange-ish hue, called out loudly to those waiting in line..Haha, folks, look at the big kid. Meaning me of course.Another torture of choice was a spinning teacup thing that had a bar in front to hold on to and it seemed the harder I pulled on the bar to brace myself the faster the teacup holding us spun and I thought it would sling my eyeballs out. Later, Sharon informed me that pulling the bar made for the excessive G-forces. Thanks for the info. Another, more sedate, part of the county fair that’s nice is strolling around gazing at the jars of pickles and jams and other homemade goodies folks bring to display for ribbons. Quilts and flowers and 4H exhibits are in this category as well and overall provide a calming environment compared to the hubbub outside the exhibition halls. Lastly, it is the people that make a county fair as much as anything else. What a delight it is to look at the cross section of humanity that comes to a fair. Here we see the tots, in their strollers being pushed along, groggy and pretty much oblivious to what is going on around them or screaming lustily for no other reason than they are hot and tired. There we see the packs of teen girls as they prowl the fairgrounds looking for friends or giggling at teen boys taking drags off cigarettes, trying to impress. Over yonder we see a game of chance operator trying to lure folks to his booth with insincere remarks such as “hey, pretty lady, try this or “hey, handsome feller, win yer gal friend a stuffed pig! How weary he actually looks with the whole affair and with the mob slowly shuffling by ignoring his pleas for commerce. I hope we go to the fair next year and take in the sensory overload once again. It is habit forming. It is a world of lights and action and people all gone wild in a fenced in lot.

At some point in your life as a parent or grandparent, you have probably told one of your children, “pay attention. Many times, when we talk to our children, they seem to be listening, yet they are not really hearing what we say. They are not focusing on what it is that we want them to know. In our relationship with God, we often listen to God the way our children listen to us. We hear God as we pray, yet we are not absorbing the things He wants us to know. In Acts 20:7-12, we find Paul teaching. He had visited the region of Troas, and he was teaching and preaching in a local house. On that day, Paul preached for a very long time. He preached until midnight! The people there set up oil lamps to light the room as darkness fell. While Paul preached, a young man named Eutychus sat in a window. Eutychus began to fall asleep as Paul’s message went on and on. As Eutychus fell asleep, he fell from the window and died. Paul rushed to him and took him in his arms. Paul restored his life. Eutychus appeared before everyone gathered there alive, amazing them all. Eutychus was so sleepy, that he could not pay attention to the words Paul was saying to everyone. How often do we also lose focus on what God is saying to us? God has a plan for each of our lives, and He seeks to lead us in the way He has desired for us. Too often we miss what God is trying to say. Even in our prayers, we often tell God all the things we want from Him, yet we leave Him little room to talk. I wonder how often God wants

My wife and I reside on 2 acres; ½ mowed lawn, ½ dense woods. Both are a blessing; I discover much about God’s creation from this property and two days ago was such a morning. Worldwide there are 160,000 species of moths and 17,500 species of butterflies. Most moths hatch from eggs, transform into larvae and then caterpillars with a voracious appetite that transforms plant material into tissue that becomes the moth. Most moths are dull colored but some aren’t and the one I am focused on today is the resplendent giant silkworm moth. Its body is white, legs and wing edges pink, and its 4.5â€? wide translucent wings and long tails are lime green. Some call these

Luna moths, but the original Latin name was a Feather Tail moth and that’s what I choose to call them; in a minute you’ll understand why. Feather Tail caterpillars feed annually on our sweet gum, hickory, and white oak leaves and once they become moths they only live a week. Their purposes appear to be bringing beauty to our world, serving as part of the food chain for other creatures like bats, birds and ants; and to mate and lay eggs to start their cycle all over. This is all by God’s incomparable design. And they finish their race by laying their eggs and soon thereafter, dying. Similarly, we are to focus on family. To marry into a covenant relationship not a loose one that can be “un-

A Feather Tail morning... By Dennis Siracusa

Allow that still s m a l l voice of God, to speak to Rev. Trent Tankin you. As you look at your relationship with Jesus, are you hearing His message for you? Take a moment and tell God what Samuel said so long ago, “Speak, for your servant hears (1 Samuel 3:10, ESV).

to say to us, His children, “pay attention. So many distractions, so much chaos in our daily lives lull us to sleep spiritually. Paul, through Jesus, woke Eutychus physically from his death as he fell. God is ready to wake us spiritually. As we pray, as we study the Bible, instead of commanding the conversation with God, let Him speak. In the silence of worship, let the Holy Spirit move through your heart.

Well, it’s no secret that fun events of all types have been canceled this year thanks to COVID19 and the Cleveland County Fair is one of them. That’s a real shame because Sharon and I tried to go to it as often as possible. I love county fairs. The earliest recollection I have of going to one was the Mecklenburg County extravaganza back in the late 1950s. It was there I saw and touched my first hippopotamus. Come to think on it, that was the only hippopotamus I have ever touched but I can still see in my mind’s eye the grayish, leathery skin with a scattering of bristly hairs and how when I poked the hippo with my finger it looked at me as if to say, “If I could get out of this cage I bet you wouldn’t do that you little punk. Nowadays, hippos are pretty much rare fare at fairs. The African giants having been replaced by beeves, goats, chickens, hawgs, and the odd sheep as the animals of choice for display. I guess the cost of catching and keeping a hippo has priced them out of the fair market. Fair food is another big draw. It’s hard to pick exactly what to eat. Some folks solve this dilemma by eating everything they can afford. Sort of like those people at a family reunion picnic who declare they want “just a taste of this and that and sit down under a tree with a plate on each knee heaped with a cornucopia of stuff. Anyway, back to the fair fare. One of the best things in the fair food lane is the roasted ears of corn still in the shucks. This is a very convenient as well as tasty concession because you can skin the shucks back and drizzle some butter on the cob and gnaw at it a while and then pull the shucks back up and carry the cob around like a pistol and repeat the process as the need for sustenance arises. Sweets at the fair are another culinary temptation, the two old standbys being cotton candy and candy apples. We have never left the fair without Sharon carrying home at least one candy apple. Of course the new trend in sweets at the fair are deep fried cookies, candy bars, and anything else with an overload of sugar that once combined with hot grease makes for an interesting shock to the human system. What would a county fair be without rides? Not much. Modern technology has come up with some fancy rides but the basic principal and guiding force behind just about every one of them old and new is to subject the body to as much in the way of stressful force as possible and call it fun. Last year at the Cleveland

coupled as one “A-lister recently espoused and we are to raise our children in the “nurture and admonition of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4. And, within our short earthly lives we are to use our unique Godgiven abilities to help others; make this world a better place and always give God the glory and credit; to love one another and serve them as Jesus Christ showed us. Matthew 22:3740. And don’t you know that evil forces abound to stop us? John 10:10-29. In Isaiah 45:5 God declares “I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. Well folks, sometime after these beautiful moths were named feather tail moths they were renamed LUNA after a demonic Roman goddess of the moon. Satan wants

to steer everything toward his darkness. He’s after our relationship with Jesus, our hope, joy, children and even the name of a moth. During my yard search I found a whole feather tail moth. It was beaten up. We often are beaten up too because life has attacks from Satan and valleys. Use the armor of God to stand against Satan. Ephesians 6:11. And in the tough times we all face, even though we are getting worn out and beaten up, never quit. Like the apostle Paul, let’s finish our race strong. And remember, Jesus is watching us and His hand is ever willing to grab ahold of ours so we don’t sink. And that is where my faith resides; not in my ability to swim, but in Jesus’ infinite ability to catch me.

HARRIS From Page 1 Florida, Virginia, and the mountains every chance we got. We loved going to Chimney Rock.” Gertrude never got a driving license, but recalled when her husband bought a car. “He walked to the Chevy dealer in Belmont and drove the car home,” she said, The new car was such a game-changer that Gertrude said once John drove the car to a store, forgot about it, and walked home. Gertrude has lived on Volk St. in East Belmont for around 60 years. It’s a little lane on the river. The Aberfoyle Mill once stood right behind it. Now, new apart-

ments and townhouses occupy the mill site. Gertrude recalled life on the river back in the day. “My husband and father loved to fish,” she said. “There were boat shows and water skiing on the river. I remember when the airplane pilot Manson Arrowood would fly low over the river. Back then, the river looked different than it does today. It was not as wide. I used to play on the sandy shore.” Gertrude’s faith has always been strong. She is a charter member of Unity Baptist Church. “I love Unity Baptist,” she says. Another thing Gertrude loves is gardening and growing things. Until recently, she grew a vegetable garden every year. She still likes to

plant flowers. “I scoot around in the garden,” she says. “I can still wash and hang my clothes on the line. I still do my own housework. I run my house inside and outside.” Gertrude gazes out her window and considers the way Belmont is now compared to how it used to be. “Everything has changed,” she says. “It will never be the same.” Gertude’s 100th birthday will be one of celebration to a life and lady that has stood the test of time in a graceful and energetic manner. What’s the big plan for the special day? “A party at Catfish Cove!” she said. “My favorite hangout!” Happy Birthday Blackie!

Laboratory Testing- The state continues to have testing capacity and lab turnaround times are averaging two days. However, fewer people are getting tested. Anyone who has symptoms or has been exposed should get tested. There are supports available to help people who may face challenges in being able to miss work or safely stay home. Tracing Capability- The state continues hiring contact tracers to bolster the efforts of local health departments. Personal Protective Equipment- North Carolina’s personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies are stable. Phase 2.5 means the following for North Carolina: Mass gathering limits will increase to 25 people indoors and 50 people outdoors from the current limit of 10 indoors and 25 outdoors. Playgrounds may open. Museums and aquariums may open at 50% capacity. Gyms and indoor exercise facilities, such as yoga studios, martial arts,

and rock climbing, as well as skating rinks, bowling alleys, indoor basketball, volleyball etc., may open at 30% capacity. Bars, nightclubs, movie theaters, indoor entertainment facilities, amusement parks, dance halls will remain closed. Large venues remain subject to the mass gathering limits. In addition, NCDHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen issued a Secretarial Order allowing for outdoor visitation at nursing homes or skilled nursing facilities. To participate, nursing homes must meet several requirements, including, but not limited, not having a current outbreak, having a testing plan and updated written Infection Control or Preparedness plan for COVID-19, and having adequate personal protective equipment. The Secretarial Order is effective as of September 4 at 5 PM and remains in effect through September 22, 2020.

NC Governor Roy Cooper has announced that after a summer of hard work to slow the spread of COVID19, North Carolina will take a modest step forward move into Phase 2.5. The order went into effect Friday, September 4th at 5pm. Mask mandates and other prevention methods remain in effect and are even more important to contain the virus, Cooper said. “Safer at Home Phase 2.5 continues our state’s dimmer switch approach to easing some restrictions,” said Governor Cooper. “We can do this safely only if we keep doing what we know works — wearing masks and social distancing. In fact, a new phase is exactly when we need to take this virus even more seriously.” Dr. Mandy Cohen, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services shared an update on North Carolina’s data trends. Dr. Cohen explained that North Carolina has seen stability in our key metrics. “As we take modest steps forward today, it’s important to remember that moving forward doesn’t mean letting up on slowing the spread of the virus. Our progress is fragile and we need to maintain focus on the 3Ws especially as we head into flu season,” said NCDHHS Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, MD. Trajectory in COVID-Like Illness (CLI) Surveillance Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s syndromic surveillance trend for COVID-like illness continues to decline. Trajectory of Lab-Confirmed Cases Over 14 DaysNorth Carolina’s trajectory of lab-confirmed cases is stable. Trajectory in Percent of Tests Returning Positive Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s trajectory in percent of tests returning positive is stable. Trajectory in Hospitalizations Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s trajectory of hospitalizations is declining. Although these numbers are still stable or declining, they remain high. In addition to these metrics, the state continues building capacity to be able to adequately respond to prevent virus spread. These areas include:

LETTER TO THE EDITOR By Deborah Baxa Belmont, NC I am a supporter of Holy Angels, Inc. in Belmont, NC, and a neighbor to Camp Hope (part of the Holy Angels organization). My late husband, Dr. Lt. Col. Mark Baxa, and I, have property adjoining that of Camp Hope. We have been longtime supporters and contributors to Holy Angels. Last year I asked Holy Angels to grant me a small easement off of the road at Camp Hope, to gain reasonable access to my property, so that I may preserve this property for the community and build an event venue (with a small footprint). My request has been repeatedly denied by Holy Angels without specific explanation. Belmont has seen extensive residential growth over the last 10 years, particularly along South Point Road. There is a substantial need for reasonable commercial activity, along with, where possible, the preservation of open space. The Baxa property is a large beautiful space and features rescue horses, a stunning bamboo forest, and water access.

Dr. Lt. Col. Mark Baxa

What I have offered to Holy Angels is of mutual benefit in terms of financial opportunities, long term care and protection of the open space, as well as the enhancement and benefit to the greater Belmont community. Specifically, for Holy Angels, this includes money, exposure, enhanced security measures, horse therapy, waterfront property for Camp Hope, and opportunities for residents to participate. Surely this is preferable to many other options that could otherwise be considered for this space, such as dense residential housing. To me, it seems that non-profits, particularly those as established and respected as Holy Angels, are the soul of many communities, providing jobs, needed resources, and fostering civic pride. Established non-profits sometimes bring new faces to a community; more often they are a significant reason why residents choose to stay. Given this role and the high regard with which many non-profits are held, there seems to be a reasonable case to be made that the role and moral responsibility of a non-profit does not end with its own mission statement but extends as well to the community beyond which supports and promotes it, and from which in some instances the non-profit may derive substantial economic benefit in the form of relief from property taxes and other government services which the community then shares the cost for. I had scheduled a fund raiser for Holy Angels on Sept 13th at 5pm, as part of a summer concert series called “Music at the Hot Hole”. This is free to the public and at these events I collect donations which are then given to local charities. I received a letter from an attorney representing Holy Angels, referencing “Unauthorized Fundraising”. The letter further stated that I do “not have authorization to use Holy Angels’ name for any purpose and to cease and desist using Holy Angels’ name”, and that “Holy Angels will not accept any proceeds from the referenced concert”. For those of you who were planning to attend, I will still hold the concert and find another worthy local charity for any donations collected. I guess we need to watch if kids are fundraising for Holy Angels with those lemonade stands. Let me be clear that I have no ill will against Holy Angels, and continue to support the residents. Please watch my video on Facebook (@camelotmeadowsevent). I am grateful for the words and notes of encouragement for this community based venture and protection of the land, and would appreciate any further support that the community can provide. The video can also be viewed on my website: www.camelotmeadowsevent.com.

Mackie loved the outdoors and worked in her flower beds and gardens up until her death. She and Wayne loved their birds. They knew all the species and could identify most of them by name. More than anything, she treasured time spent with family and friends. Mackie is survived by her soulmate and best friend of

57 years, Wayne Ray; her sons, Steve Ray and wife Dana, Alan Ray and wife Heather; her beloved grandchildren, Hayden, Davis, Cooper, Devin, Cole, Kara, and Kendall; her brother, Walter McConnell and his wife Vicki, and sister-in-law, Carolyn McConnell; and brother-in-law Lanny Ray and wife Lancy. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the Belmont Community Organization (BCO) located at 91 Catawba St, Belmont, NC 28012. (704) 825-4526 Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, a card or phone call to Wayne, Alan and Steve will be greatly appreciated. Offices have been painted in soothing tones of green, gray, and blue with matching carpeting. Other flooring is done in grey-toned hardwood laminate. The colors compliment the view that employees will enjoy of sky, water, and trees as they look out the windows towards Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park across the road. The project included building a three story glass and steel elevator and staircase tower on the outside of the front of the building. The tower will feature a large City of Belmont logo. The upper two levels of the building will be occupied by the city’s administrative departments such as city clerk, city manager, planning and zoning, billing, and customer service. The offices will get new furniture and equipment. The furniture is expected to arrive in October. There will

be a nice lunch room for employees as well as a kitchen and lockers. For now, the lower level will be home to the Parks and Rec. Department. The lower level will be a also be a temporary location for city council meetings. There will be room for about 300 seats unlike the current situation where council meetings at city hall are generally standing room only. Parking will be plentiful at the renovated complex with 85 spaces. The remodeling job also included LED lights throughout. The LEDs are automatic.

When a person goes into a room, they come on automatically. A few minutes after the room is empty, they go off. Another energy saving feature of the new building is tinted glass for the windows. Cost of the renovation work is estimated at $4.8 million. The city bought the building and 30 acres ten years ago for $2.5 million. “To get this much land and have a new building for that amount of money is a nobrainer,” public works director David Isenhour said. “It is a great deal for the city.”

You may have noticed some hydrants across Mt. Holly are no longer red. The city is in the process of cleaning and repainting the hydrants to a brighter yellow color. The process will take two years to complete. The hydrant shown in the photo has been sandblasted and will be painted yellow within the next few weeks. MHFD photo

Good News from Gaston Early College High School Here’s some good news from the Gaston Early College High School. Students Landry McBee, Autumn Kirby, Najira Davis, and Aaliyah Cherry have been accepted into the “Pirate Promise” admissions program at East Carolina University.

The Pirate Promise program is designed to improve transfer student access and success by allowing prospective students to apply to participating community colleges such as Gaston College and ECU at the same time. Once they compete an associate degree at Gaston

College, they can then transfer into a degree-completion program at ECU. In addition, Najira Davis was appointed to serve as president of the Student Government Association at Gaston College and Joseph Wittmer was appointed to serve as a student government senator.

Our politicians say this year’s election is a defining moment for our country. They say it’s about the heart and soul of our nation. Many Christians believe the church is facing a defining moment as we learn to adapt to the challenges of Covid-19. Teachers, students, and parents are facing a defining moment when it comes educating our children. By definition, the term “Defining Moments” means the time when decisions are made that defines who a person is, what a person values, and the direction a person’s life will go. Unlike special moments such as graduations, purchasing a house, receiving a reward, defining moments shape a person’s identity and

destiny. In the Bible we find that Abram had a defining moment when he decided to obey God by leaving his country and people for a land God had promised to give him. Moses had his defining moment at a burning bush. After his initial resistance, he finally went to Egypt and lead the Hebrew people out of bondage. The disciples defining moment came when they accepted Christ’s invitation to follow him. In every case, those who believed, accepted, and obeyed the voice of God had a defining moment in life. Their life was given new meaning and they were never the same. Somewhere, somehow, someway, everyone will

have a defining moment. The most defining moment of all is when God speaks truth to our hearts and reveals His love for us in His Son Jesus. This is a moment of decision. This decision to trust and follow Jesus is the most defining moment of all. You are invited to East Belmont Baptist Church on Sunday September 27 at 10am. We will hear the stories of three individuals who experienced a defining moment in their life and how God lead them to a life of meaning as they trusted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Gaston College recognizes staffers for 25 years of service Gaston College employees were recognized for 25 years of service at the College’s annual Employee Appreciation and Recognition Celebration in February. Each of them received a certificate and a $150 gift card. Those recognized

were Donna English, Gail Hoyle, and Ed Stroup. Donna English is the Chair of the Industrial Systems Technology program. Prior to joining Gaston College, she worked 13 years in industry and taught part-time as an

adjunct instructor at Isothermal Community College for approximately six years. She then attended Western Carolina University to continue her education, earning her Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master’s in Technology.

She also received her Ed.S. in Higher Education from Appalachian State University. In her program of study at Western Carolina, she met some instructors from Gaston College who told her about an opening for an instructor. She applied

Gaston College Counseling Center is open The staff of the Gaston College Counseling Center is available to assist students who may be struggling with career path choices or other personal issues, such as depression, anxiety, or domestic violence, or who have concerns about accessibility on the College’s campuses. Students can make appointments to meet with counselors either over the phone, in-person (following social distancing guidelines), or virtually. The counseling staff on the College’s Dallas campus consists of Sherri Chavis, who provides career counseling, including advice on career inventories and exploration, personal counseling and general advising, and ZaMyra Dow-Shaw who advises on accessibility services and accommodations for students with special needs and also provides personal counseling and general advising. Providing Gaston College students with the assistance they need is the counselors’ priority. “One of the best resources we have on campus is Student Outreach Services,” said Damon Murray who, as Director of Student Success

and Retention, oversees the counseling staff. “This is a service, paid for out of student fees, that provides confidential counseling services with local, licensed clinicians. SOS also has legal, budget, and other resources available on the website. We also connect students with the campus food bank and with financial resources, like Financial Aid, Student Emer-

and was hired. Her first position at Gaston College was as an instructor for Mechanical Drafting and Design Technology. After about six years she moved to the position of instructor for Industrial Maintenance. At the College, English has served on the faculty senate, multiple hiring committees, and the curriculum committee. She served as the Industrial Division’s student success coach from 2014 to 2015 and attends yearly career fairs at local middle schools to promote the trade and industrial programs at Gaston College. Those activities contributed to her being named the 2006 Instructor of the Year for the Engineering and Industrial division, one of her proudest accomplishments. Gail Hoyle was a stay-athome mother and wanted to start back to work part-time. At the suggestion of her husband Reggie, who worked at Gaston College as a part-time GED instructor, she joined Gaston College as a part-time secretary for the GED and Adult High School coordinators on the College’s Lincoln campus. She became a full-time employee in 1994. In 1996, she joined the Continuing Education department under the supervision of Dr. John Merritt, then the Director of Continuing Education. From 2002 to 2004, Hoyle represented Gaston College as a member of the planning com-

mittee for the biannual North Carolina Community Colleges Adult Educators Association and helped plan workshops for spring and fall conferences. She joined the Economic Workforce Development division on the Dallas campus in 2011. As a Grounds Technician, Ed Stroup performs all the necessary tasks to maintain the grounds at the College’s main campus and satellite locations. This includes maintenance of lawns, plants, trees, parking lots, roadways, and other areas of the campuses. He has been in the Grounds Department since he joined Gaston College in 1994. Well known for his consistency and commitment, Stroup is one of the many staffers who “wakes up the campus” every morning, regardless of weather or other conditions such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Stroup has seen many changes on the College’s three campuses in 25 years, such as new construction, expansions, and upgrades. Through it all, he has gone about his job not looking for recognition or attention and preferring to be a “get ‘er done” type of person. His quarter-century of hard work and dedication have made him a valuable, important, significant, and appreciated staff member and his service has great meaning to the staff, faculty, and students at Gaston College.

Tips for parents to help children have the best school year possible With each new school year comes a new set of challenges and adjustments for students, teachers, and parents. There are a number of things that parents can do to encourage children to put their best foot forward and get the most out of the school year. Here are a few helpful tips about how parents can help their children achieve success both inside and outside of the classroom. By taking advantage of these tips, parents can build a strong foundation for their children and help them to understand why getting a good education is so important. At School It is important for parents to build relationships with teachers and other school personnel who are working with their children and make

sure they stay informed about what is happening at school. Understanding a child’s behavior and attitude at school goes a long way in helping track a child’s progress during the school year. When asking about a child’s academic performance, be sure to ask the teacher about behavior and attitude, too. Form a partnership with the child’s teacher to enhance student achievement. It is important to have teacher/ parent cooperation and support on an everyday basis. Frequent communication with a child’s teacher makes it easier for parents and teachers to address a problem should one arise. When speaking with the child’s teacher, make sure to ask the most important questions first. Each semester has a period of adjustment. Knowing

a child’s strengths and weaknesses in the classroom helps to better understand his or her progress. Fall is a great time to learn more about what might have an influence on a child’s academic progress. In the spring, review the child’s progress and think toward the future about what can be done to provide summer enrichment opportunities for the child. At Home Make an active effort to pass on a feeling of excitement and enthusiasm for learning. On a daily basis, parents should ask their children about what they learned at school. Be specific with the questions and leave them open-ended. Avoid yes or no questions. Use what the children share to generate a conversation that is posi-

tive about school and their schoolwork. Lay the groundwork for habits that encourage learning at home like providing a place to study, setting aside specific time for reading and homework, and cutting out unnecessary distractions. Give priority to a child’s academic interests and value other endeavors such as extracurricular activities and hobbies. Instill a strong work ethic in the child and show pride in his or her academic growth and accomplishments. Praise

the child for efforts, not just results. As a family, be sure that children know that learning is held in high regard. Set standards and have high academic expectations. Help children understand why education is important to their future. Tips compiled by the Gaston County Schools Communications Department Sources: N.C. Department of Public Instruc-

tion and N.C. School Boards Association

Here is another example of business and community partners helping Gaston County Schools. Earlier this month, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity donated 72 book bags filled with school supplies and a case of copier paper to Pleasant Ridge Elementary. Gaston Schools photo

Please excuse me, my filter is broken! By: Shelton Fisher If there is one thing that we can all count on happening despite whatever may be going on in the news or around the world, it’s the fact that the grass will keep on growing! For this columnist, what comes to many as just another day on the lawn has typically been a weekend in the workshop working on my Yard Machine. My house sits on an acre-sized corner lot in my neighborhood. When we moved in, I had a push mower that I used at our old rental house, so you can imagine my appreciation and relief when I was gifted a Yard Machine riding lawn mower by my wife’s uncle and grandfather. It’s no spring chicken to say the least, but to be honest with you, I absolutely love this mower. It cuts like a champ with each use, it has incredible speed for a lawnmower, and it’s extremely user friendly… when it wants to crank. My wife’s grandfather is a small engine mechanic, so he has seen it all when it comes to lawn mowers. I have learned a few things by watching and helping him work on mowers and weed eaters, so as my mower has decided to give me trouble over the past couple of weeks, I decided to dig in and get my hands dirty. I called up Junior and explained that it sounded like it wanted to crank up, but the engine would not catch a spark. According to him, it sounded as though there was not enough fuel going to the carburetor, but I had my own theory that the culprit was a bad spark plug. So, what do I do as the stubborn twenty-something that I am? I decided to change the spark plug as a start. After the replacement was installed and I sprayed a little carburetor cleaner into the carburetor, it cranked right up! I was able to get my lawn in good shape that week and things were good… Until a couple weeks later when it wouldn’t crank again. Thinking of fuel to the carburetor, I decided to follow the fuel line from the tank to

said carburetor. The only thing in between them was the fuel filter, so perhaps it had gone bad. I unplugged it from the line. It was yellow, stained, and worn and after blowing through it and hearing a rattling sound, I decided it was time for a new one. A trip to Tractor Supply later and replacing the filter, I turned the key to see if all that trouble had been in vain. It sputtered and choked, but after a few seconds of trying it fired up! Junior had been right all along, and I have yet to have trouble out of it since, however not all was well that ended well. I decided to weed eat my yard after I finished cutting it only to find that when I pulled the throttle after letting it idle for thirty-ish seconds, it would choke and die on me. I had merely won the battle… not the war. I took to Google to see if anyone in the world-wideinter-web had ever had the same problem. Lo and behold, I was not alone and NOT ONLY was I in good company, but the culprit was yet again… the fuel filter! I had no idea that weed eaters even had fuel filters! I poured the fuel mixture from the gas tank back into the gas can and removed it with the carburetor. After sticking my finger inside the gas tank, I felt a hose with a little knob on the end. The knob was the filter and it was a quick and easy exchange. It took about six bucks and some time, but after some careful handy work and concentration, I’m proud to say that the weed eater can now join the Yard Machine with fixed equipment. So, what is there to learn from all of this? Well friends and neighbors, I suppose that just because something is broken doesn’t mean that it can’t be fixed. If that weren’t the case, my acre would be a jungle by now! Sometimes, we must try listening to advice no matter how much we think our way of fixing things is the right way. And if you get cross or fed up with something, don’t be ashamed to let it out but mind your manners! Make sure YOUR filter isn’t broken!

Jekyll & Hyde fundraiser benefits dog park The DBDA recently decided to hold another fundraiser for the future Belmont dog park and had an idea that would involve a local brewery/bar. The hope was that one of those businesses would be willing to create or designate a special cocktail or beverage where proceeds from it would be donated to the dog park during the “dog days of summer”. In speaking with local establishment owners, Frank La Fragola, of Jekyll & Hyde jumped at the opportunity to hold a fundraiser for the dog park. They created a special, limited edition beer called “Double Dog Dare” and graciously donated 100% of the proceeds to the dog park fundraiser, which rang in at a total of $1,600.00.
