New Belmont Farmers Market draws a crowd

The new Belmont Farmers Market held its grand opening last Thursday on Glenway St. downtown and a good number of folks showed up to peruse and purchase the goodies on offer.

Around two dozen vendors were selling a wide variety of locally grown and produced items such as honey, cookies, bread, mushrooms, flowers, jam, jelly, and vegetables. Other vendors offered top shelf coffee, tea, gourmet dog treats, and herbal items. Representatives from farms that raise beef cattle were also there.

The crowd was an eclectic blend of folks who filled the

marketspace as they strolled along taking in the sights and smells.

Some people brought their kids. Kiera Klein had her daughters along.

“I brought them to show how important it is to support local businesses and the community,” she said.

Nine-year-old Fiona Klein was having fun.

“I like it,” she said.

Sister 7-year-old Mia sampled a local honey-filled straw.

“This is great,” she said.

Vendors were also pumped. Gray Shipley was there representing his Shipley Farms Beef farm near Boone.

“My sister lives in Belmont,” he said, “I’m having a great time at the market.”

Matt Baum from Mooresville had a tent set up selling his Festin Bakery goods.

“This is a great turnout,” he said. “Everyone is excited to buy local products.”

Market organizer Ryan Murphy was on hand meeting and greeting folks.

“It’s exciting to see the outcome of all the work we put into making the market happen,” he said. “We had fantastic support from the vendors and the community.”

The next Belmont Farmers Market is set for October 20 from 3-7pm on Glenway St. Don’t miss it!

Duke Energy provides $25k grant to Belmont

The Duke Energy Foundation recently distributed $500,000 in grants to help small businesses across North Carolina – from restaurants to retailers – continue their ongoing recovery from economic challenges initially

triggered by the pandemic. This is the second year Duke Energy has provided targeted grants in support of downtowns throughout the state.

The Downtown Belmont Development Assoc., Inc. received $25k. The ceremo-

nial check presentation took place last Thursday on the steps of City Hall. The check was presented by Duke Energy representative Martha Wegner.

Hurricane season is upon us

It seems like the month of September and hurricanes have a history around here.

North Carolina is the fourth worst state for hurricanes in the U.S. The Atlantic hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends on November 30, but the Tar Heel State is most at risk for hurricanes during the months of August, September, and October. Most of the devastating hurricanes to hit the state in recent history occurred in these months.

On September 11, 2017, Hurricane Irma’s “backlash”

came to our end of Gaston County.

Irma brought local winds at a steady 20-25mph with overnight gusts to 40mph. Sheets of rain fell throughout the period. Parts of Belmont were without power, phone, or internet service. Besides Belmont, power outage areas also included Mt. Holly, Ranlo, and Stanley.

In Belmont two large trees fell. On Todd St. a tree split in half and blocked the roadway as well as pulling down power lines. On Central Avenue, a massive oak on the grounds of Stowe Manor also

knocked down several other large trees on its way to the ground. The root ball was over six feet in diameter.

On September 14, 2018, Hurricane Florence brought torrents of rain to Gaston County.

As usual, before the storm even got here, folks rushed to stores and stripped the bottled water and other drink supplies shelves clean.

Local municipalities braced for the blow and made contingency arrangements early in the week. Local fire and police departments made

Like several medical conditions, traffic is an insidious disease and right now we are having a stage III terminal case of getaround gridlock.

One place in our area where traffic has become a nightmare is I-85. Once a quick way to get through Gaston County, I-85 eastbound in the morning and westbound in the afternoon also takes on the appearance of a slowmotion parking lot. If you think it stinks now, just wait until the widening project starts.

The intersection of N. Main and Wilkinson Blvd. in Belmont is also a bottleneck with folks focused on biscuits and burgers try to get in and out of the fast-food parking lots not to mention around 3pm when school lets out. It is not uncommon to sit through three cycles of lights at that location.

The new kid on the traffic jam block is South Point Rd. Infrastructure be damned let’s build more houses down that way sayeth the capitalist running dogs.

Things were not always in such shape. Once, public transportation was a viable way to move yourself. When I was a kid, my mom rode a bus from Belmont to Charlotte and her job at Ivey’s Department store. There were also taxicabs in Belmont and Mount Holly that would take you just about anywhere you wanted to go. I always enjoyed riding in those cabs. It was like riding in a limousine and being rich for about 20 minutes and they had a scent inside of cig smoke and body sweat and engine oil and gasoline that was earthy and real.

Even before the bus line and the cabs, folks in Belmont and Mount Holly could hop on one of the P&N electric trains and ride to Gastonia or Charlotte. They rode the trains to work in the mills and to shop in the city. It was a win-win but automobiles came along and the train went away and the number of cars grew times squared and gridlock slowly but surely set in.

“Officials” are looking hard at ways to

1 John 3:23 Now this is his command: that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another as he commanded us.

The Japanese developed a process called “lean manufacturing,” which is a system used to make production more efficient and simplified. American manufacturers have recognized its value and duplicated the same strategies to make production more cost efficient. They saw how complicated their factories had become and chose to copy the simplicity of the Japanese.

We can easily slip into making the Christian life too complicated. There have been so many times when I was

“improve” the traffic situation in our area. Once upon a time a bright idea was floated to reduce Wilkinson Blvd. down to four lanes and put flower beds and bicycle paths on the outer two lanes. In my humble opinion bikes are OK for in town, but to ride one on Wilkinson Blvd. would be very risky- not to mention in the increased congestion from two lanes being closed.

Another group wants an electric shuttle bus to run between downtown Belmont and Belmont Abbey and maybe beyond. This is a pretty good idea, but I wonder if enough people would use it to make the thing practical.

Then we have that mode of transportation known as walking. In days past, folks actually walked to school and work and the store and church and wherever they needed to go. I walked to school rain or shine as a child and it was OK except on the coldest days. He or she who has not smashed glistening frozen mud puddles has missed out on some fun.

Along those lines, an idea that has gained legs is that of having a dedicated walking path alongside the tracks between the Abbey and downtown Belmont- the Rail Trail. This would make a safer and smoother trek but, being someone who prizes their privacy, I have to sympathize with the folks where it would run behind their homes.

What’s the answer to our local traffic congestion? Fewer cars and people. But that’s not going to happen. I think it’s going to take a combination of everything I have mentioned to even make a dent in the automotive logjam. But how much personal freedom people will be willing to give up and how many tax dollars it will take to float those schemes I have mentioned is the real question for which answers are desperately being sought.

Walk in lean Christianity

following Christ simply, but then I started focusing my attention on minor things, complicating everything. I began to concentrate on that which robbed me of passion and energy. There is a great saying in business: “Work smarter, not harder.” Sadly, the church sometimes loses the simple focus of following Christ and complicates the Christian walk. We end up working harder, not smarter. A person can then feel all kinds of obligations and responsibilities that weigh them down with guilt and condemnation.

In his first letter, John returns to simplicity of following Christ with this: “believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he commanded us.” John speaks of the Christian life as

one of simple faith in Christ and love for others, to be repeated daily, over and over. Isn’t that fantastic? I like to think of it as lean Christianity. Realizing this has brought great freedom to me and can bring freedom to anyone who needs to simplicity their walk with Christ. It’s all about faith and love. That’s lean Christianity.

Look everywhere and we’ll see much to be concerned about. Nuclear attacks, Vladimir Putin’s threats of reclaiming Alaska, inflation eating our lunches, (our grocery bill has risen 30%, how about yours), and crime and angry, planned, confrontational outbursts everywhere. Where did teenagers learn to gang up and seriously injure or murder elderly citizens or anyone for that matter? And drugs! 60 years ago all I heard about were hippies and weed in California. How are tons of various poisons being manufactured, distributed and sold throughout the U.S.? It seems we all must have a hand in this mess directly by involvement or indirectly through our silence.

Today, the cancel culture is ramping up rabid confrontations; all coming from the dark side of human nature not from any sources trying to be civil. Around 1997 I heard a Houston Texas radio program about a young man arrested for selling guns from his trunk. What stuck with me was his unconcern for anything, even his own life. How have we so devalued human life? Is it possible part of the answer lies in over 60 million abortions where loud voices championing the 1% cases threatening the physical life of the mother, teamed up with influential liberal voices to blow pregnancy risks way out of proportion and smother common sense resistance? Is it possible voices who have endorsed violence in movies and on TV for decades have so desensitized us to horrible violence that now it’s ok or naturally to be expected? If that’s really ok, then is anyone safe? If it’s not, how on earth do we fix this and how do we protect ourselves from

its influence or possible confrontation?

2,000 years ago John the Baptist engaged his ministry calling by warning against sin, encouraging repentance, and declaring the coming of Jesus Christ, humanity’s messiah. He well understood righteousness and its sinful opposite and he bravely confronted it and encouraged positive change thorough confession and repentance.

He wasn’t afraid to confront it even at the threat of his own life. Many would say he was a fool but let’s see the philosophy that embraces that thinking. If one believes in a carved wood figure or a stack of money as god, or simply believes we accidentally exist, then protecting our short earthly life is our preeminent course of action.

Of course that also means life is “all about us,” and no one else really matters.

If, however, we believe we are involved in a 6,000 year old God story where righteousness vs unrighteousness really matters, then our perspective will radically reverse. John the Baptist forfeited his earthly life but he is and has been in God’s presence ever since his execution. Here we sit 2,000+ years later and his voice, history, and character are still being heralded throughout the most published book in history; our bibles. And that leads us to what to do. Jesus came to serve humanity, show us God in human form, and offer eternal salvation; disciples of his need to do the same.

preparations by beefing up their staffing.

The City of Belmont had staff start cleaning storm drains in preparation for the heavy rain. The Emergency Operations Team met and reviewed emergency procedures in order to be prepared to service citizens.

Ashbrook High opened its gym as a shelter for hurricane victims.

All week prior to Florence’s arrival, weather forecasters scratched their heads trying to figure out where the storm was headed and what would happen when it got there.

On September 13, winds starting to pick up. The morning of the 14th brought showers and winds.

Sunday the 15th saw more rain and winds of over 40mph. Trees were stripped of their leaves. By Sunday afternoon, the South Fork at McAdenville and Cramerton was rising. Water roared over the McAdenville dam. Weather broadcasters were going wild.

It was not until Monday that things began to settle down and folks could take stock of what had hit our area from the sky.

The effect of Florence and Irma contrasted strongly with what took place in our region back on September 22, 1989, when Hurricane Hugo came calling. Hugo’s smash was the worst natural disaster to hit us since the Great Flood

of 1916.

The first images of Hugo’s wrath that folks saw on the front page of the Belmont Banner showed downed power lines, the screen of the Belmont Drive In Theater lying in a twisted heap, homes with shingles torn away, the water tower at Parkdale Mills with its top missing, and the ticket booth at South Point High sans its roof.

Hugo caused students at Belmont Abbey to be sent home. The roof of the Haid was torn off. The cross at the top of the Abbey bell tower was blown askew.

Belmont’s city manager at the time, Ken York, talked about the mess Hugo left.

“Due to the large mass of tree debris on the sides of the streets, it will take a massive effort to achieve total cleanup.”

In McAdenville, Police Chief James Swanson had a near miss Hugo-style when a tree hit his patrol car as he was driving through town.

“I was coming down Main Street at Mockingbird Lane when the rear end of the car was struck,” Swanson said at the time. “It just pushed the car on across the street.”

Swanson and others worked to clear limbs and debris from the roads in McAdenville, where the damage estimate from Hugo was $1.7 million. That included 300 homes with minor to heavy damage, the roof of the

town hall being blown off, and the police department being flooded. An estimated 2,000 trees were down in McAdenville.

To house those whose homes were damaged by Hugo, the Mount Holly Jr. High gym was opened as an emergency shelter. Members of the Catawba Heights VFD went to work helping clear streets and yards of limbs and trees. Mount Holly police Sgt. Bob Johnson reported there were no injuries due to the storm. However, cars were damaged.

In Stanley, the town’s civil defense siren tower was broken and trees were devastated.

Also in the aftermath of Hugo, the Red Cross set up mobile kitchens in the Belmont/ Mount Holly area that served Hugo victims sandwiches, soup, and drinks. The kitchens were located at places such as Mount Holly Jr. High, Belmont First Presbyterian, and Stanley Rescue

Squad. A photo in the Mount Holly News showed Red Cross volunteers from Michigan handing out vittles to folks.

To get the electricity flowing again to the thousands of area homes that were without it, crews from Alabama Power and Light came up to help Duke Power workers. In appreciation, Allen Foreman in North Belmont hung an old quilt with the words “Thank You Alabama Power and Light” painted on it from his front porch.

So, cross your fingers we are spared any hurricanes this year.

Welcome Fall…

So today (as I’m penning this writing), it is the official first day of my favorite season. Fall, I am in awe of your arrival. The summer was too long, too warm, and well, you get the picture.

The onset of the Fall season brings so many happy feelings to me. It’s the season when I so enjoy watching nature unravel what summer created. The cool, crisp golden months encompasses much more than just the changing of splendid and beautiful colors on the trees… cooler sweater weather, pumpkin spice flavored everything and cozy nights by the fire. All of these things bring sweet comfort to my fall-loving soul.

On a deeper level, Fall has a way of shifting my focus off of the hectic days that summer seemingly always brings. I tend to reflect on the year I have just walked through…. mentally highlighting the good and not so good moments.

Fall is the season to slow down, settle in and begin a regrouping of what’s truly important. As the leaves continue to fall. I too, begin to let go of bottled-up emotions and

Edward Cochrane and wife Teresa; 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; and numerous friends.

Ted was a 1955 graduate of Belmont High School

where he was a member of the Beta Club. He lived in Charlotte for much of his life but moved back to Mount Holly where he cared for his mother for 22 years. Ted was a member at Second Baptist Church and later attended Catawba Heights Baptist Church where he was a member until his passing and also taught Sunday school. He was re born in Jesus Christ on September 3rd 1975 and knows where he is going.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Betty Jean Stone Springs; his brothers: Delmas B. Stone, Jerald D. Stone, Jimmy R. Stone, and Henry B. feelings that somehow get tucked away inside of me. Fall taps me on the shoulder and reminds me to let go and look forward to new beginnings.

This splendid season is here, and I’m glad. I’m already spanning the pages online of the Farmer’s Almanac to get an idea of how chilly this one will be. My fall-winter wardrobe has been dusted off and is awaiting its turn to be worn.

But first, not too far away, the hubby and I are counting down the days to our mountain getaway to Gatlinburg. It was booked in early June …so now we start checking off that (to do list) before that weekend in October arrives. The mountains and Fall are the perfect pairing of breathtaking beauty. Let’s not forget either all of the pumpkin patches, fall festivals, and hayrides that are in abundance this time of year.

Fall introduces the element of decay, but it is just a part of the cycle of seasons that our lives revolve around. We can celebrate our expansions, allow certain things to fall away, and prepare for our winter’s rest.

I hope you find joy in celebrating Fall too.

Lowell Trucks in the Park event was a hit

County’s tenth confirmed rabies case of 2022

On Friday, August 26, 2022 at 1:29 pm, Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement was notified of a positive rabies specimen that was sent to the North Carolina State Lab on Friday, August 26, 2022.

On Friday, August 26, 2022 at 6:22 pm, Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement responded to a call regarding a dead bat that was found on the porch of a residence in the 1000 block of Mountainbrook Drive, Gastonia, NC 28052.

The homeowner’s cat had

either killed or found the bat and brought it to the porch.

Animal Care and Enforcement collected the bat and sent a rabies specimen to the North Carolina State Lab.

The bat tested positive for rabies. The cat was up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations and received a booster. Animal Care and Enforcement notified the animal owner and conducted a neighborhood canvas in the area of Mountainbrook Drive in Gastonia, NC to notify the community of the positive rabies result and to verify rabies vacci-

nations for family animals in the area. Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement also notified the Gaston County Department Health and Human Services.

The Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement stresses the importance of having an up-to-date rabies vaccination for all of your pets. By keeping your pet’s current on their rabies vaccines, you are protecting them from contracting the disease from wildlife and spreading the disease to your family and other animals,

and people in the community. Furthermore, it is important to never handle or transport sick wildlife. The animal could have rabies.

Gaston County residents should contact Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement to capture and transport sick wildlife. GASTON COUNTY POLICE Animal Care and Enforcement MAILING ADDRESS: P.O. Red Raiders and Warriors win big in Week Six

In Week Six high school football action the South Point Red Raiders and East Gaston Warriors both notched impressive wins while Stuart Cramer lost to Crest.

South Point 35

Hunter Huss 7

South Point has started the 2022 season strong. The Red Raiders move to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Big South conference play after trouncing the Huskies 35-7.

To notch the win South Point delivered a wellrounded offensive performance coupled with a solid defense effort.

Cam Medlock and Patrick Blee powered the Red Raiders offense.

Medlock continues to have what is turning into a good year. Against Huss the senior back ran for 143 yards off 25 carries with three touchdowns.

So far this season Medlock has rumbled for 644 yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s averaging just a bit over 128 yd per game. Those are the kind of numbers South Point wants from their fullback.

Freshman quarterback Patrick Blee’s fairytale season continues. So far Blee is still holding his own. In the Huss game, Blee ran for 43 yards and a score. He went three for seven in the air with a TD and a pick. Blee’s lone TD pass of the game was a 19-yard third quarter toss to Harrison McKinney.

On defense continue to ramp it up. Five Red Raiders finished the game with double digit tackles.

Winter Kincaid, Chaynce Ford, Will Ross, Jack Milford and Jaquis Rumph all turned in top-tier efforts.

In addition to finishing the game with 11 stops, Jack Milford registered two sacks.

In his post-game comments head coach Adam Hodge kept it all simple and to the point.

“Thought we played good,” Hodge said. “Need to get better every week.”

East Gaston 38

Cherryville 0

It was homecoming weekend at East Gaston and the

Warriors gave the crowd something to cheer about. EG opened their big Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference schedule with a big 38-0 victory over Cherryville.

You could tell that this one was going to be all EG early on when the Warriors went up 10-0 in the first quarter after Shelden Clark scored off a blocked punt.

East Gaston took a 24-0 lead into the locker room at the half and kept the pressure on the Ironmen all night.

The Warrior offense played well against Cherryville. EG churned out 563 yards of total offense. Most of the yardage came from the ground game with the Warriors grinding

out 378 rushing yards.

EG’s offensive work horse was Nehemiah Stovall. Stovall played well, finishing the night with 227 rushing yards and two TDs.

Junior QB Trenton Sherrill went

12 for 19 and 185 yards in the passing department. He also ran in a score from one yard out in the third quarter.

Another Warrior player to have a good game was Chase Johnson.

Johnson had 13 carries for 101 yards and one catch for 55 yards.

defense harassed the Cherryville quarterback all night and kept the Ironmen off the score board.

Noteworthy performances were turned in by Kirin Moebes and Payton Parker. Moebes finished the game with six tackles and a pair of sacks while Parker tallied four stops and two sacks.

“Thought we played well from the start in all three areas,” head coach JT Postell said. “Offensively, probably the best we’ve executed, defensively, it was great to get a shutout, and I’m really proud of our special teams creating a score for us on the blocked punt.”

East Gaston is now 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Crest 54

Stuart Cramer 28

A tough first quarter made all the difference in this one. Crest bolted out to a 30-7 first quarter lead and the Storm never recovered.

All season Justin Roquemore has been the prime mover for the Cramer offense. That didn’t change in this game. Roquemore ran for 80 yards and threw for another 191 yards and three touchdowns

Also having good games were running back Mark O’Dell and wide receiver Isaiah Johnson.

Johnson had 71 yards off seven catches and a touchdown while O’Dell ended the night with 59 yards and a score.

With the loss, Cramer dropped to 2-3, they are 0-2 in league action.

This week East Gaston, Cramer and South Point are set for more conference action.

Cramer will be at Ashbrook, while East Gaston will travel to Thomas Jefferson.

In the game of the week, South Point will host Crest in a game that is sure to shake up the Big South 3A standings.

It was East Gaston’s Homecoming game and Jaida Mistry, daughter of Christia and Nimesh Mistry, was named Queen. Oh, the Ironmen squad must have been rusty because the Warriors continued their winning streak by whupping them 38-0. See more on page 13. Photos by Jennifer Hall

meter run those South Point runners finishing in the top 10 were Lexi Birtwistle, 3rd - 22:21.5; Maddie Frank, 4th - 23:56.80 and Claire Frank, 9th - 25:03.2.

Coach Ziemer says, “These kids have been training hard all season and are super motivated after winning the Gaston County championship last week. We knew the Shelby course would be tougher this season due to some construction, but we came mentally prepared. We came to win and that is what we did. The friendships they have formed with each other and other school’s runners is refreshing to see.”

Congratulations to all the runners and to Coach Kay Ziemer for their outstanding showings.
