Just four days after his inauguration, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania visited Western North Carolina on Friday, January 24, to highlight the ongoing devastation caused by Hurricane Helene and the continued recovery efforts needed in the community.
The recovery process from Hurricane Helene, which struck 18 weeks earlier, has been slow and difficult. The storm tragically claimed 104 lives in North Carolina, with a total of 233 fatalities across seven states, and caused an estimated $53 billion in damages, according to a funding request from the previous gubernatorial administration.
Purse has done alongside Franklin, and we truly appreciate it.”
During his visit, President Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with FEMA’s response to the disaster. He remarked, “I want to say that we’re very disappointed in FEMA. Your new governor, it's not his fault. He’s brand new to this whole situation. But we’re going to work together with the governor. We’re going to collaborate with your senators, but, really, we’ll be working closely with your congressman, especially the three who are in the area, including Michael Whatley.”
President Trump also praised the efforts of Franklin Graham and Samaritan’s Purse, saying, “Franklin Graham has been unbelievable. We’ve made a significant contribution to Franklin, and we’ll continue to do so. I’ve been hearing nothing but praise for the work that Samaritan’s
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein released a statement about the visit, calling it a positive signal that President Trump chose to visit the region. “I thanked the President for coming and asked for his support of $20 billion in additional disaster relief, as well as for 100% reimbursement of eligible FEMA expenses for another six months. Families, businesses, and communities are struggling and need these urgent resources to help them rebuild,” said Governor Stein. “I look forward to working with the Trump Administration in the coming weeks and months to ensure that people get the support they need to recover.”
Senator Ted Alexander and other local politicians greeted the President, with Alexander noting, “It was quite a (very cold!) morning with the President and First Lady coming to Asheville to discuss disaster relief needs following Helene. I was especially thrilled to meet Rev. Franklin Graham and thank him personally for all the work that Sa-
maritan’s Purse has been doing in Western North Carolina.” He also mentioned Susan Wiles, the President’s Chief of Staff, and highlighted the contributions of many nonprofit organizations supporting the region.
In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact, President Trump’s visit to Western North Carolina served as a reminder of the challenges that still lie ahead for the region. While recovery efforts have been slow, the collaboration between local, state, and federal officials, alongside the tireless work of organizations like Samaritan’s Purse, offers a glimmer of hope. With Governor Stein pushing for critical financial support and President Trump emphasizing the importance of cooperation, the path forward will require continued unity and resolve. As the community rebuilds, a concerted effort from all levels of government, alongside local organizations, will be essential in restoring the lives and livelihoods impacted by this catastrophic storm.

On Wednesday, January 8, Cleveland County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Taylor was engaged in a high-speed pursuit, lost control of his vehicle, and struck a tree head-on. The vehicle immediately caught fire while Deputy Taylor removed himself from the vehicle. Passersby pulled him away from the burning vehicle, as well as K-9 Thanos.
The Sheriff’s Office asks for anyone able or willing to donate to Deputy Taylor during this tragedy. All proceeds go directly to Deputy Taylor and his wife Mindy for expenses during his lengthy recovery.

Alyssa Clark, a senior at Pinnacle Classical Academy, won the $500 first prize in the local round of the American Legion High School Oratorical Contest, organized by Warren F. Hoyle American Legion Post 82 and held in Shelby on January 18.
Alyssa competed against students from schools in Cleveland County and other counties as she delivered, from memory, a prepared oration on a citizen’s duties and obligations to our government, as well as an address on an assigned topic related to the Constitution. She now advances to the division level of the competition.
Judges for the com-
petition were Ron Byers, Tajsha Eaves, and Jennie Lambert. Timekeepers were Ric Francis and Gary McNeilly, and tabulators were Martha Bridges and Dave Williams.
"Alyssa prepared an oration of eight to ten min-
utes and researched four constitutional amendments in preparation for an additional talk of three to five minutes," said Dr. Shelly Shope, the school's headmaster. "This was incredibly hard work, and we are so proud of her."

Deer season has been over for a few weeks now, and turkey season is right around the corner. I like how each of these are so different than the other. If hunting turkeys involved as much as hunting deer, I would have to give up one. In days past, they were. Let me explain.
Years ago, deer hunting hardly amounted to anything more than building a couple of fixed tree stands in well-traveled areas. They lasted for years and each season one would simply climb into one of those stands. There was not much preparation, and for many hunters opening day was an event that quickly came and left. There might have even been a cabin or camping area where guys would come together for a few days to hang out and hunt, but after those few days, it was back to work with an occasional weekend giving it another try. There was not much land management, no trail cameras, and the trophy was any deer that fell to the ground. Today, serious deer hunters never stop pursuing their game. The year is made up of either hunting or getting ready to hunt. It’s nearly February now, and if there is to be a summer crop that will keep deer close all year, the field needs to be turned and prepared for the seed that must be planted in the next few weeks. And while we’re at it, now is a good time to do some scouting since there are no leaves on the trees. One might even find some sheds to let him know what bucks may still be around. It never stops.
Turkey hunting on the other hand amounts to knowing where the turkeys are and being able to call them close enough to shoot. That’s it! And thank God for it! Easier said than done; but simple. It’s like taking something that is otherwise hard, and even pressure-filled, and making it easy. I like that, and I guess that’s why I look forward to this season.
When I think about the Christian life, I have similar feelings. It seems while being a Christian can bring difficulty and persecution; that persecution and difficulty need not come from one’s on hand – or rather from one’s own false ideas. I find this to be the biggest problem among believers. We make it harder than it needs to be by taking on a responsibility that is not only not ours but is impossible for us to do. It’s the responsibility for living out the Christian life. The power and responsibility for that comes from the Spirit of God. And as soon as we learn this, not only will the pursuit be more fun, but success will also come with a lot less effort.
Don’t forget to join me for 5 more weeks at 6:30 am central time on Zoom, as we dig deeper into an Outdoor Truth.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is developing a plan for this year’s Public Mountain Trout Waters (PMTW) stocking program that will incorporate modifications needed due to major damage to the Armstrong State Fish Hatchery caused by Hurricane Helene. It will include hatchery repair plans and adjusted production operations, stocking schedule and revised online maps.
“Our team is dedicated and focused on maintaining a positive trout fishing experience to North Carolinian anglers and others who visit our state to enjoy our stocked trout waters,” said Division of Inland Fisheries Chief Christian Waters. “We are confident this modified plan will accomplish that goal as we tackle major damage to one of our largest trout-producing hatcheries, the related significant loss of trout, and accessibility issues to stocked trout locations due to the storm.”
Table Rock and Marion) received limited damage and are fully operational.
Inland Fisheries Division staff have begun assessing all state Hatchery Supported and Delayed Harvest locations across the mountain region to determine whether hatchery staff and anglers will be able to safely access those sites in 2025.
(5th & Final Part of “NEW CHAPTER” Series)
Last September, Armstrong State Fish Hatchery in McDowell County north of Marion sustained major damage as a result of flooding and landslides during Hurricane Helene, severely impacting trout production capabilities. Over 600,000 fish were lost at that hatchery, including broodstock.
Severe damage to the infrastructure and facility roads and debris deposition resulted in temporarily closing the facility until repairs are made. Some of the hatchery’s trout escaped during the flooding; however, most of the 600,000 fish of various sizes died when the storm compromised the water supply to the raceways and hatchery building. “We are currently working with contractors and engineers to repair the damage and restore operations,” said Production Supervisor David Deaton. “Some of these repairs will include improvements to add resiliency to the facility so impacts from future storms are lessened.” Armstrong State Fish Hatchery is anticipated to be fully operational by January 2026. As portions of the facility are restored, they will be utilized to resume trout production. The planned renovation project at the Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, NCWRC’s largest trout-producing facility, has been paused until Armstrong is fully operational. Trout production is at full capacity at Setzer which will provide most of the trout stocked in 2025. In 2024, the N.C. General Assembly appropriated $20 million to NCWRC to be matched with $19.5 million in agency funds for major renovations at Setzer to address aging infrastructure and to provide safeguards from future flooding.
While the damage to Armstrong is significant and will require extensive repairs to restore operations, the other mountain hatcheries (Setzer,
“Based on initial assessments of PMTW locations in hurricane impacted areas, and the level of damage to our hatcheries from the storm, it was evident we needed to modify our original 2025 stocking plans for the mountain region,” said Regional Fishery Supervisor Doug Besler. “We will use the information from site assessments to develop our 2025 Hatchery Supported and Delayed Harvest trout stocking plan.”
The stocking plan may be modified throughout the stocking season for logistical purposes and to allow for last-minute changes to schedules due to field conditions, such as road and bridge repairs.
“Anglers may notice that the stocking frequency of locations may be reduced to monthly only, the numbers of stocked trout may be reduced, and species ratios will be altered,” said Besler. “The stocking schedule will be posted on the agency website and changes to that schedule will be posted as soon as possible. We encourage anglers to check this site frequently to ensure that they have the most accurate information.”
The PMTW program manages approximately 5,400 miles and 2,600 acres of trout waters in 26 western counties, with five distinct classifications: catch and release, delayed harvest, hatchery supported, special regulations, and wild trout waters. NCWRC hatcheries produce and stock about 1 million brook, rainbow and brown trout each year.
Other activities associated with PMTW include the management of wild, self-sustaining trout populations; native brook trout conservation; aquatic organism passage and stream habitat projects; facilitation of numerous partnerships; and aquatic nuisance species management.

As the year advances, we will encounter moments of both excitement and apprehension as our plans evolve and we navigate uncertainties. Nonetheless, we can choose to guide our year by standing on God’s timeless promises found in Scripture. God is faithful and trustworthy. Numbers 23:19 AMPC says, “God is not a man, that He should tell or act a lie, neither the son of man, that He should feel repentance or compunction [for what He has promised]. Has He said and shall He not do it? Or has He spoken and shall He not make it good?” Not only He is trustworthy, but God declares in Jeremiah 1:12 (ESV), “…for I watch over my word to perform it.”
Peace and Strength
In the midst of uncertainty, God’s promise of peace shines brightly. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the
peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” As we face the unknowns of the year before us, we are encouraged to bring our worries to God in prayer. His peace is not just a feeling; it is a protective guard over our emotions and thoughts. Another promise we can hold onto is found in Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” God recognizes our human limitations and promises that as we place our hope in Him, we will be empowered for the challenges ahead.
Finally, Jeremiah 29:11 reassures us of the beauty of God’s plans for our lives.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” As we contemplate our aspirations and goals, it is comforting to remember that God’s plans for us are good. He desires to lead us toward a hopeful future, filled with purpose and fulfillment. With faith, we can take steps toward our goals,
trusting that He will guide us in His perfect timing.
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“Lord, I praise you as the One who knows everything. You are Omnipotent and all powerful; may you be exalted and lifted up always. As the year unfolds, I will be focused on You and your word. Help me to understand your Word. Please drive unbelief from me. Help me to grow strong in faith this year. In Jesus name - Amen.”
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Starting March 1st, Cleveland County Government will implement new standards aimed at enhancing the efficiency, safety, and accessibility of all Convenience Sites and Landfill Sites. Many of the standards in this policy are already part of the Solid Waste Ordinance. By clearly outlining these standards for the public, the County aims to ensure continued service, with fiscal responsibility and accountability to residents and Solid Waste ratepayers.
1. Commercial Waste and Vehicles: Commercial, industrial, and institutional solid waste is prohibited at Cleveland County Convenience Sites. All commercial vehicles must access services at the Cleveland County Landfill Sites. All commercial vehicles are required to access solid waste services at the Cleveland County Landfill Sites. Self-McNeilly Landfill (250 Fielding Road, Cherryville) is designated for Municipal Solid Waste, while the Airport Road Landfill (1607 Airport Road, Shelby) is designated for Construction and Demolition Debris/ Waste. All lettered vehicles are considered commercial vehicles.
2. Waste Exclusions: The following materials are prohibited at all Cleveland County Convenience Sites: Construction and demolition debris • Hazardous waste • Liquid waste • Infectious waste • Radioactive waste • Dead animals • Burning or smoldering materials • Sludge • Large quantities or excess lengths of cable, wiring, or spring steel (over 3 feet).
3. Residential Vehicle Restrictions: Only personal passenger vehicles, sport utility vehicles, flatbed trucks with a valid exempt farm use license plate, and pick-up trucks are permitted access to the Convenience Sites. Single-axle personal utility trailers less than 12 feet in length are permitted. Prohibited: Personal or rental dump trucks, box trucks, dump trailers, enclosed trailers, car trailers, and gooseneck trailers.
4. Waste Containment Requirements: Municipal Solid Waste/Household Waste must be placed in trash cans with secured lids or securely bagged to prevent spillage during transport. Any waste hauled in trailers must be fully covered with a tarp to prevent debris from escaping.
5. Enforcement and Penalties: Failure to comply with these standards will result in warnings. Further violations will be subject to fines, beginning at $100, with escalating penalties for subsequent violations. Repeat offenders may be denied access to Cleveland County Convenience Sites and Landfill Sites.
This policy applies to all authorized patrons accessing Cleveland County Convenience Sites and commercial drivers/owners accessing the Cleveland County Landfill Sites. The implementation of this policy is a part of Cleveland County’s ongoing efforts to ensure responsible waste management, reduce environmental impact, and promote safety for all patrons and County staff. Please visit www.clevelandcounty.com to view the official policy and find more information about Cleveland County Solid Waste. Submitted by Karyn Owens

Sally Bowers Shepherd of Shelby, NC headed off to Heaven today to join her beloved husband (Bobby Joe) and her youngest son (Richard Shane) on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
We are all terribly saddened and yet rejoiceful at her longing to be with them and her precious Jesus, to whom she would journal to for 3 hours every morning. All is well except for the empty place in each of our hearts for her ever-present goodness and constant love. She rejoices today as the Angels sing!
Sally grew up in Toledo, Ohio with her 5 siblings. She is survived by her sister Barbara Harvey of Northwood, Ohio. Barbara will miss her sister and their nightly “Words With Friends” game to conclude their day. Sally loved to play cards with anyone in the family who was up to it. She could play for hours on end and she was good at it! She would make sure you knew the rules! She knew them well. She is clothed with strength and dignity.
Sally was the mother of 3 girls and 6 boys. She had 15 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. She was a wonderful, caring friend and a dedicated member of Landmark Baptist Church. She loved us and we loved her beyond words.
The tapestry of her life is woven with love, sacrifice, and constant dedication to family and her community. For 30 years her life’s work and passion has been to ease the pain for family members of a recently deceased loved one at 13 different churches in and around Shelby. Sally tailored a poem of hope and comfort for the vivid journey to eternal life for their loved one. She took great care and hand delivered them to the churches for the families. She will sing the goodness of God!
A celebration of Sally’s life will be in full bloom immediately following the 10:30 a.m. sermon of Pastor Allen Davis at Landmark Baptist Church on Sunday, February 2, 2025. Sally was cremated and her family will hold a private scattering of her ashes at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family request that you consider making a donation in honor of Sally to her beloved church.

Valentine’s Day is a day of love nestled in the middle of February.
Sweethearts use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to show the people they care about just how deep those feelings run. A 2023 survey from the National Retail Federation found consumers expected to spend $25.9 billion on Valentine’s Day, up from $23.9 billion in 2022. Forecasters suspect spending is likely to increase this year as well. Valentine’s Day is awash in many different customs. Here’s a deep look at some of those enduring traditions and others that some may feel should be brought back into favor or adopted entirely.
Handwritten cards
It’s a common scene each year in card retailers and pharmacies: people threedeep in the aisle trying to pick out Valentine’s Day cards in the eleventh hour. People can save themselves the hassle of fighting the crowds if they make their own handmade cards. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, sweethearts created unique cards from scratch, according to Country Living. And prior to products produced by Hallmark and other greeting card companies, people used to send one another cards customized with personalized messages.
Pampering gentlemen It is common in North America for Valentine’s Day celebrations to lean significantly toward
favoring women, who are often on the receiving end of flowers and chocolates. However, in South Korea and Japan, it is the men who are pampered with such gifts. Women purchase chocolates for their male partners, family members and coworkers as tokens of appreciation and affection. Never fear, a month later on White Day (March 14) men reciprocate with candy, cake and flowers.
Bouquets
These days a dozen longstemmed red roses might be the norm for Valentine’s Day gifting. However, roses weren’t always the preferred flower for the holiday. History.com reports that, in the nineteenth century, bouquets might contain all sorts of flowers, each chosen to convey certain messages. Individuals can research the meanings behind certain flowers and put
together a Valentine’s Day gift this year that expresses exactly what they are feeling.
=Puzzle purses
Sweethearts in Victorian England created “puzzle purses,” which were a series of love letters that could be read separately, but also fit together to create a design and message. These intricately folded sheets of paper had parts of messages or verses written on different corners and were meant to be read in a specific order.
Heart-shaped chocolate boxes
British chocolatier Richard Cadbury is credited with creating the first heart-shaped box for Valentine’s Day. The boxes were intended to be so beautiful they would be kept to hold trinkets or love letters. Ornate chocolate boxes are not quite as common today, although the gifting of chocolate for the holiday is still strong.
