Stained glass windows arrive at First Baptist Mt. Holly By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
One of the final, and most beautiful, stages of the postfire, three-year rebuild project at First Baptist Mt. Holly was completed last week. The job involved installation of the magnificently restored and crafted stained glass windows that were one of the sanctuary’s most notable features. Statesville Stained Glass got the nod for the project. Avery Wooten supervised the job. “The way we do stained glass windows is the same way they were done 500 years ago,” Wooten said. That means joining the glass pieces together with lead strips. “We use EPA approved methods,” he said. Nearly all of the church’s 100-years-old stained glass pieces were salvaged when it burned on July 21. 2016. What Statesville Stained Glass did was literally put
Humpty Dumpty back together again. “Any glass that was broken was duplicated by Kokomo Opalescent Glass Co. in Indiana,” Wooten said. “The glass that was not broken was cleaned and put in new frames.” The large picture window of Jesus that will be facing Main St. was made from scratch by Statesville Stained Glass. The window was designed by Leslie Wicker. Artist Johnny Sherrill did the full-sized rendering. Marty Freeman and Laci Wooten painted the scene on the glass. “There’s not another one like it anywhere,” said Wooten. Three small spotlights inside the church will shine on the window at night, making it highly visible and glowing to folks as they pass by outside. The panel’s theme is “Come Unto Me”. Auten-Stowe American Legion Post 144 getting some TLC By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Belmont’s Auten-Stowe American Legion Post 144 building dates to around 1952 and was starting to look a little tired. Seeing that situation, Boy Scout Troop 56 member Jesse Whaley, 17, decided to pitch in and do some fixing up on the place for his Eagle Scout project. Whaley is a South Point

B.M.
Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him
There are all kinds of acronyms in this world and B.M. is one of them. Ya’ll know what B.M. stands for, right? Maybe not. Here’s another use for those letters. One I made up myself. Drum Roll……Before Microwave. Besides the three TVs and computer at our house the appliance that gets the most use at 149 Melody Drive is the microwave oven. I reckon about 90% of the food Sharon and I prepare is done in that little buzzing box on the kitchen counter top. We burn through a microwave oven every two years or so. Recently, the one we had abused since 2018 died. Actually, it didn’t die, it would not turn off. The little glass plate inside just would not stop spinning no matter how many times we jabbed the button plus it was making a groaning sound so off with its head and over to the metal recycling place on Pine Street. But back to B.M. I started thinking about how folks cooked their vittles Before Microwave. The first method that came to mind was a black cast iron frying pan. My great grandmother Ella Eugenia Loftin Smith was a virtuoso of the iron frying pan. Its main role was an altar to fried chicken, pork chops, bacon, eggs, and “stew beef”. Grandma Smith was Queen of Cholesterol. Another B.M. weapon of choice is the baking dish. Corning Ware the preferred brand. How many casseroles have been made in a Corning Ware casserole dish? As many as
there are grains of sand on the beach or stars in the sky. Here’s another B.M. tool- the aluminum pie pan. As most of you know, putting a metal pan in a microwave is a recipe for Alan Hodge a fireworks show. No Banner-News Editor folks, a gas or electric stove is the place for pie pans filled with flaky crust turning golden brown and bubbling berries or apple slices or even chicken pot pie ingredients. Ok here’s another B.M. necessity- the lowly “pot”. Pots come in all shapes and sizes and since the dawn of time folks have cooked their grub whatever it may be in them. These containers and their contents of meat, vegetables, what have you have been placed over open fires, fireplaces, wood stoves, etc. with people dressed in everything from animal hides to high fashion hovering overhead. As I write this I hear our new microwave humming and its little bell tinkling that some sustenance of some sort is being cooked. The electric stove- our least used appliance- sits cold, but ready to spring into temporary action should the need arise. Here’s hoping you all have/had a happy Thanksgiving and some good eats no matter how they were made.

Focus By Dennis Siracusa Several years ago I had trouble seeing clearly. My cataracts were pronounced; I couldn’t see 1/3 of the DMV vision screen. Surgical implants help me now see close and far away but I’m fuzzy in some middle areas. After the surgery I began marveling at the perfection of God’s creation of our eyes and organs. I remember Werner Von Braun noting if you consider our human brains and just one other organ say an eye, it is mathematically impossible for even those two organs to have evolved together regardless of how many billions of years evolutionists insist that it has taken. That’s vitally important because evolution is being shoved at us everywhere for a very dark reason; to shift our focus from Jesus. Besides taking care of our bodies we need to carefully use tools available to us; for instance reloading ammunition needs careful focus. The process must be exacting or the end product can be dangerous. A reused cartridge case might need to have 2/1000ths shaved off its length to fit a rifle properly and too much or too little powder (measured in grains) for semi-automatic handguns can cause a weapon to blow up or not function well so our focus on a sensitive weight scale or micrometer must be viewed very carefully. That’s all good for our physical well-being. What about our emotional wellbeing, or our financial wellbeing? In the bible, the Lord tells us “to be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.” (Matthew 10:16) I’ve read that scripture before and mostly focus on the dove part. I don’t like snakes and I equate them with the devil. I also know the Lord doesn’t want us devising evil so being innocent resonates with me and my walk with Him too but what about that shrewd serpent part? Snakes have eyes and can see, but their most wonderful organ is their tongue. That flickering tongue seems scary but it isn’t threatening us, it’s discerning the snake’s environment. Snake tongues detect microscopic particles in the air that provide them with tons of information. One fork of the tongue may tell if food is a certain direction and distance

POLICE From Page 1 The Belmont Police Department underwent the CALEA assessment under the direction of Chief Chad Hawkins and with support from Mayor Charlie Martin and the Belmont City Council. CALEA accreditation is often referred to as the “Gold Standard” in public safety since accreditation is only awarded to those agencies who are operating at or above best practices. “I am so proud of our police officers and everyone at the Belmont Police Department who worked so hard to achieve this prestigious goal,” said Mayor Martin.
“Our residents and business owners can take pride in knowing that their police department meets or exceeds best practices in law enforcement.” CALEA is an international non-profit that assesses agencies worldwide and offers several benefits to the community. It ensures officers operate professionally, safely, and transparently and is a ringing endorsement that residents can be proud of. In addition, CALEA offers support for agencies in the development of new policies and reduces liability and risk exposure in daily operation.

POST 144 From Page 1 got some friends and my father together and we did the job. Whaley’s friends included fellow Troop 56 members Kevin Granson and brothers Grayer and Hayes Andrews. The flag pole is just the start of of what Whaley plans to do at Post 144. “I want to leave my mark on the place, he said. “I plan on building a handicapped walkway to the flag pole. This will make it easier for older veterans in wheelchairs or walkers. I am also going to build a pentagon shaped wall where people can sit. Other work that Whaley has done at Post 144 includes planting flowers and mulching. He hopes to have
everything wrapped up by February or March. Whaley says he has had positive feedback on his work. “The Legion guys say they are glad I’m doing it, Whaley and his fellow scouts assemble the flag pole. he said. Whaley’s mom, Lisa McLean is rightly proud of Jesse’s work. “It’s amazing, she said. “He went the extra mile and is an overachiever. Since Whaley will soon be graduating from South Point, what are his plans? “I’ve got thoughts on the military, he said. “But I might want to be a welder or handyman and use those skills to give back to the community.
remain stationary as spectators drive past. By having this drive thru event as opposed to a traditional parade, it will eliminate mass gatherings/ crowds while still providing holiday cheer. Parade attendees are encouraged to decorate their cars to provide additional holiday fun. Those who wish to participate will enter from the HWY 29-74/Wilkinson Blvd and Main Street intersection. Decorated floats and entries will be parked in the north-bound lane of Main Street beginning at Woodrow Avenue and continue to the intersection McLeod and Main Streets. Parade attendees will drive past the parked floats and enjoy the music and festivities. Videographers and photographers will be taking pictures and videos of the floats as well as those
who drive thru, so make sure you decorate your car and smile for the cameras. Attendees are encouraged to stay in your vehicles to participate in the drive thru festivities. In a few weeks, a new organ will be installed here.
STAINED GLASS From Page 1 Other windows on the second floor of the church trace the Biblical timeline from Old to New Testament. Lower level windows let light in through their colors and give a warm ambiance to the sanctuary. The church’s new organ is
set to arrive and be installed next month. Other touch ups left to finish the rebuild job include a bit of painting and a sound system. It’s been a long time coming and things are just about in place for First Baptist to be ready for in-person services.
So, when will that day be? “We are already doing live streaming from the sanctuary,” said First Baptist minister Rev. Dr. Kendell Cameron.”But like every church in America, it will depend on the COVID situation.”

With this being the week of Thanksgiving, we will all take an opportunity to remember what we are truly thankful for. Many people will give thanks for their families, friends, and all the things they have been blessed with. Certainly, God will be part of those thanks as well! Thanksgiving Day itself, is a day set aside for us to give thanks to God. We pause in the midst of the chaos of daily life, to say to God, thank you! As we thank God this week, one theme always comes to mind, grace. John 8:2-11 records one of the greatest acts of grace in the Bible. Jesus, teaching in the temple, was confronted by some of the scribes and Pharisees. They brought to Jesus a woman they said had been
caught in the very act of adultery. They told Jesus that according to the law, she should be stoned to death. They were hoping to trap Jesus in His words, forcing Him to say something contrary to the law. At first, Jesus simply ignored them and wrote on the ground. After their persistence, Jesus told them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her” (John 8:7, ESV). Being convicted of their own sin, the men walked away one by one. Jesus then asked the woman were there no one left to condemn her. She said no,
and Jesus told her neither did He, to go, and sin no more. Jesus extended tremendous grace to this woman. Her guilt was not questioned, even by her. She did deserve death according to the old law. She deserved death, yet through His grace, Jesus offered her forgiveness, life, and a new beginning. This same grace has been extended to us as well. We are just as guilty of sin. We deserve punishment and death. However, Jesus bore our sin and punishment. He died in our place on the cross. He did this all because of His love for us. When we
come before Jesus by faith, confessing our sins, we find salvation in Him. This is grace, the amazing grace of Jesus! As you gather with your family this week, and as you offer thanks for all you have, remember to thank God for His grace. We have life because of Jesus Christ. God has extended His love to us. He has poured His grace upon us. Even when we fail, He keeps loving us. We have much to be thankful for. This week we are grateful for the grace of God! Happy Thanksgiving!

City of Belmont unveils a new marketing brand and tagline
Cramerton Public Art: Feedback Survey The Town of Cramerton is excited to announce the proposed location for the Helix/R Sculpture at the end of one of the sections of greenway at Riverside Park, near Cramer Mountain Road. The Sculpture was generously donated to the Town by Foundry, Inc. (located in Charlotte, NC). Cramerton is looking for feedback on the proposed location of the sculpture. The following is a link to the Cramerton website with information on the Helix/R Sculpture, at the bottom of the webpage is a link to a brief, 3 question survey. The survey will be open until November 27, 2020. https://cms9.revize.com/.../cramer.../government/helix_r.php. Photo provided
The City of Belmont, the historic “small” characterfilled mill town just west of Charlotte across the Catawba River, launched a new city marketing brand, tagline, and website that elevates and modernizes its image while honoring its heritage. In October 2019, the Belmont City Council approved a contract with Mosaic Civic Studios of Boone, NC to develop a new visual brand for the city. Mosaic assisted the City of Belmont’s branding committee in thoughtfully engaging key local stakeholders to define a new brand that conveys Belmont’s heritage and personality.

JACKPOT PICK YOUR FAVORITE 3 NUMBERS
ENTER! November 25, 2020 EDITION Last week’s lottery numbers were drawn by Jamie Price, owner of The Mercantile Barber Co. located at 6 North Main St., Belmont, NC. The winning numbers were 36, 37 & 44. No ballot received guessed all three numbers correctly, so the jackpot will remain at $10,000 until it’s won. Make sure you have your entry in by the 9am deadline on Monday for your chance to win!
THE BANNER NEWS LOTTERY
One of the main goals of this project was to update the current city tagline of “City of Diversified Textiles”. Even though most of the mills have been lost or revitalized, making that original tagline obsolete, it was important to the branding committee to honor that textile heritage. The new tagline, “Many Threads, One Community”, does just that. When asked about the new brand, Mayor Charlie Martin said, “We are excited to finally unveil our new logo and tagline to our residents and public. I am proud of how hard our team worked with our local community stakeholders and Downtown Main Street Board members to create this brand. There are a lot of people that live in Belmont and whether you have lived here all your life or just a few days, everyone makes up the MANY THREADS, that make us ONE COMMUNITY. That is what makes us one of the best communities in the region to live in and be a part of.” “This new branding does not create a new identity for Belmont”, said Jamie Campbell, City Clerk and Public Information Officer for the city. Belmont already has its own unique identity. The purpose of this process was to discover, organize, and articulate the depth and diversity of our identity by modernizing our
tagline and visual marketing brand.” The new marketing brand and tagline has already been implemented in the new downtown Christmas banners, other signage around the city, and the Shop Small Saturday campaign to encourage people to shop local on November 28. Residents can expect to see it more over the upcoming months and years, including new brand merchandise. In conjunction with the new branding initiative, the city also launched a new, more interactive website to reflect the new brand identity and to better serve the community. Everyone is encouraged to visit the new website, www. cityofbelmont.org. This website is much more tablet and smartphone friendly than the previous website and staff spent a lot of time making sure information was easier to locate. The site is still being developed, so new features and content will be added over the next few months.

Christmas Town U.S.A. details its 2020 celebration changes For the 65th year, Christmas Town U.S.A. will twinkle brightly in North Carolina, despite a few trimmed traditions during its annual celebration. In September, Pharr and the Town of McAdenville announced several pandemic precautions to maintain adherence with CDC COVID19 guidelines. The lights
in McAdenville, N.C., will continue to dazzle and delight from Dec. 1-26 under a revised lighting schedule of 5:30-10 p.m. each night. Thousands of illuminated red, white and green light displays will dance along the town’s streets, welcoming visitors from near and far. Traditionally, the annual count of visitors to McAden-
ville in December exceeds a half-million people. This year, however, the sparkling celebration enacts increased safety measures and social distancing for its 2020 event. The tree lighting ceremony and yule log parade are canceled and the lights surrounding Christmas Town Lake will not be lit. The Christmas Town 5K will
be hosted virtually. Visitors will be able to drive or walk along a shortened designated route and peruse the town’s local shops, restaurants, glow and charm. Said Pharr Executive Vice President for Human Resources Christy Gliddon, “Christmas Town U.S.A. is one of the most spirited holiday traditions in the southeastern United States. We want families to feel safe as they continue making memories here this December.” Additional changes to the 2020 Christmas Town U.S.A. event include: Altered and extended hours among local businesses. Limited parking, which is available off Poplar and Elm streets with the best availability at 5 p.m. No
congregating along the event route or walking on residential property. The closure of Church and Academy streets to all vehicles. No Christmas Town traffic entering the area from Hickory Grove Road. Drivers are asked to follow N.C. Department of Transportation signage toward McAdenville and the designated route. As in years past, parking is not permitted on Hickory Grove Road or Riverside Drive. Event officials recommend that guests to Christmas Town plan their visits early in the month and during a week night when traffic is lighter. They also ask individuals to wear a mask, social distance and keep their party moving throughout the
lights so others can safely enjoy as well. Added Gliddon, “One thing that remains constant is the reason for the lights. We look forward to welcoming festive families to McAdenville for a joyful and healthy Christmas Town U.S.A.” Christmas Town U.S.A. and its annual presentation are a collaborative effort between Pharr and the Town of McAdenville. Overnight accommodations are locally available in nearby Belmont, N.C., at the Hampton Inn Charlotte-Belmont at Montcross. Visit ChristmasTownUSA.org and its official Facebook page for additional information, including timely updates and merchant details.

Belmont and other elementary Gaston College Textile Technology Center signs Tyler schools earn Distinguished Medlin as its first Apprenticeship 321 participant School status The Textile Technology gram. to the next step of an associWhen school districts across North Carolina closed buildings for in-person instruction because of the coronavirus, Gaston County Schools transitioned to remote learning at home. Through the iReady computer program, students were able to engage in online instruction in reading and math. Now, Curriculum Associates, the company that provides iReady to school districts, is recognizing eight elementary schools in Gaston County for their outstanding efforts to use the program. Belmont Central, W.A. Bess, Catawba Heights, Cherryville, Costner, Hawks Nest STEAM Academy, New Hope, and Page Primary received the “Distinguished School for Remote Learning Success” recognition based on how the schools used iReady last spring to personalize instruction for students. Not only were students able to complete math and reading lessons through iReady, teachers received information that identified students’ strengths and areas for improvement. Teachers then used the data to provide targeted instruction for students with both print and digital curriculum resources and lessons. Below is what the principal at each school had to say about the recognition from Curriculum Associates. The distinction is based on how well the schools used the iReady program. Belmont Central Elementary, Phyllis Whitworth “I am excited and honored to receive this recognition for our school. Our district uses i-Ready as a universal screener, and we obtain great data from the program. The students gain a wealth of knowledge, and it pleases me to know that during the time away from in-person learning that our students continued to work hard and strived to do their best.” W.A. Bess Elementary, Laura Dixon “Recognizing W.A. Bess for the use of i-Ready during remote instruction reiterates my faculty’s commitment to our students. Knowing that we helped our families continue the learning process during these difficult times reflects the bond that our school has with its community. I’m proud that our faculty and staff were here for our students when they needed us the most.” Catawba Heights Elementary, Cindy Stroupe “We worked to build relationships with students and parents at the beginning of the school year and stressed the importance of i-Ready. When our district went to remote learning in March, it
was a seamless transition for our students. Our students continued to learn while away from school, and our teachers were able to monitor their students’ progress.” Cherryville Elementary, Shawn Hubers “We are honored at Cherryville Elementary to be recognized as an i-Ready Distinguished School for Remote Learning Success. Our teachers, students, and families have made a commitment to using i-Ready as an important teaching and learning tool. We know that it has been a positive factor for our success with remote learning.” Costner Elementary, Lonnia Beam “We are proud of our students and teachers at Costner Elementary. They worked hard this spring to continue learning despite the challenges they faced because of the pandemic. This recognition shows that the work, commitment, and dedication of our students, teachers, staff members, and parents paid off.” Hawks Nest STEAM Academy, Jill Payne “Last spring, the pandemic presented a huge learning curve for education. While our normal school routine may have been altered, the learning did not stop. We are so proud to be recognized as an i-Ready Distinguished School for Remote Learning Success, and we are fortunate to have had this online resource to support and enrich student learning.” New Hope Elementary, Lynn Whiteside “During the closure due to the pandemic, our outstanding staff went beyond expectations to engage students and parents in remote learning. Even though our students were required to work exclusively with online resources, our teachers and staff used iReady to ensure that quality, personalized learning was provided for our students.” Page Primary, Todd Goff “We appreciate the recognition from Curriculum Associates and are very proud of our students, teachers, and parents. Our whole school community came together this spring to do what was necessary to ensure that students continued their school work during remote learning. It is good to know that our students and teachers did their best to engage in quality online instruction.”
Center at Gaston College’s Belmont Kimbrell Campus has signed its first apprentice through the Apprenticeship 321 program. J. Tyler Medlin was introduced as a program participant at an Apprenticeship 321 Graduation and Signing ceremony held virtually on September 14, 2020. Medlin began as a contractor at the Gaston College Textile Technology Center in 2014, when he was 19 years old. When he expressed to Sam Buff, Vice President and General Manager of the Manufacturing and Textile Innovation Network, that he was interested in bettering himself and furthering his knowledge in the textile field, Buff told him about opportunities with the Apprenticeship 321 pro-
Medlin’s current job is Lead Product Development Maintenance Specialist. During his apprenticeship, Medlin will be working in product development of Mechanical Extruding Specialty Chemical Fibers for military, medical, fire protection, recycling, and other applications. He also will be exposed to other industrial process technical and electronics outside the traditional textile industry arena. The Textile Technology Center would welcome Tyler to its staff after he has completed the apprenticeship.
J. Tyler Medlin
“Tyler could have long-term career opportunities here at the TTC if he chooses,” said Rusch. “He will also be presented with opportunities with the industry. We are uber-proud of Tyler and are confident in his success with the Apprenticeship 321 program. We hope it leads him
ate degree.” After the apprenticeship program, Medlin plans to further his textile-based education at NC State. He is interested in continuing at the Textile Technology Center as he believes that he can make valuable contributions there. Highland School of Technology freshman Avery Davis was selected as a top 300 student in the Broadcom MASTERS competition for her science project titled “Do You Have the Heart to Taste? A Study of the Effects of Beta-Blockers on Older Adults’ Tasting Abilities.” Belmont Middle School teacher Jennifer del Castillo and science curriculum facilitator Bianca Yavelak assisted Avery with her science project, which she began while in the eighth grade. Holbrook Middle School created a celebration cart as a way to recognize students and staff each month. The school also received an American flag from N.C. House of Representatives member John Torbett. dent’s Own” United States Marine Band. He played for the students, discussed different genres of guitar performance, and talked about his time with the band.
