Great progress being made on Rocky Branch Park project By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Improving weather has meant that the $95,000 upgrade project at Belmont’s Rocky Branch Park is moving forward. Last week saw employees

of Chapel Hill based Nature Trails hard at work in the Rocky Branch woods. Crew members were tackling tasks like bridge building, brush clearing, and trail blazing. According to Parks and

Rec. director Zip Stowe, the purpose of the major upgrades is to make Rocky Branch a more walkable and a family friendly oasis of outdoor area just a couple of blocks from the heart of downtown. The cost of Phase I of the project

remaining funds come from the Trailblazer’s by way of grants and donations.”

So, what is the the project entailing? See ROCKY BRANCH, Page 6

Gaston County Board of Education member Dot Guthrie is the recipient of the prestigious Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement that is presented by the American Library Association (ALA). A veteran educator with more than 40 years of dedicated service as a teacher, school librarian, central office administrator, and Board of Education member, Guthrie is “the epitome of an educational leader who goes beyond the call of duty to do what is best for children,” according to Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker, who wrote a recommendation letter in support of Guthrie’s award nomination. Long before becoming the Gastonia Township rep-

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS When was the last time you cleaned the coils on your refrigerator?

Turning the corner Well, about this time last year a new word entered our vocabulary- “social distancing”. I know that’s two words but you get the drift. Before SD became a rule to live by, folks could get together and laugh and play and mourn and sing and dance and cut every sort of shine they pleased but another word pulled the plug on that- “Covid”. Then government and politics got involved and suddenly we could not go and do as we pleased because Big Brother said so. It is still going on. It’s for our own good..right? Then came the mask deal. Before this time last year, masks were reserved for Halloween and costume balls and holdups. For the past year they have choked and gagged and stifled us. Many months ago, Sharon had a light bulb go off over her head and she made up a passel of tie-dyed, hippie style masks for us. I told her there was a future in mask making and she could sell them on Ebay but she demurred and since then others have raked in Covid mask cash but that’s OK it was just an outlet for her creative side if nothing else. You know what the silver lining is in the COVID mask thing? Folks with bad breath or bad teeth don’t have to feel so self-conscious. The past year has been tough. Jobs lost. Businesses gone kaput. Businesses that held on by the skin of their teeth. Nerves frayed. Finances kicked in the jimmy. Government basically holding people’s freedoms hostage…as I said..allegedly for our own good. But maybe we’ve turned a corner. Last week the sun came out and the daffodils and forsythias and crocus flowers began to bloom. Several bluebirds have been vying

over the birdhouse in our backyard. I began earnestly looking over seed catalogs in anticipation of the vegetable garden I hope to make. High school football and Alan Hodge other sports got going Banner-News Editor in a time-delayed sort of way but at least they are going. Speaking of going, kids in elementary school went back to “in person learning”- another Covid-caused phrase. Folks are getting their Covid shots. Hats off to the nurses and doctors and other health care folks who are doing the shooting. A few government mandated restrictions are being lifted. This time for our good for real. Spring is here and summer soon. I have been looking at the Kure Beach pier webcam online and saw folks on the beach and pier just happy to be outside and by the ocean. I bought myself a vintage Penn saltwater fishing reel and rod and hope to one day sit on the Kure or some other pier and feel the boards move ever so slightly with the waves and look down at the sea swells and if I catch something will give it to the next fisherman down the line and if I don’t that’s OK too. I feel like we have turned a corner. It feels good. What passes for normalcy is coming, and this boy, just like you, is more than ready for it.

By Tony Marciano My sister’s house came with stainless steel appliances. She gave me her white refrigerator. It is one of those great models that has French doors on top with the freezer on the bottom. There is just one problem. It has a design defect. The freezer doesn’t go through the defrost cycle. The ice builds up behind the inside wall by the coil. You have to unplug it and wait for it to defrost. Then you take off the back of the inside wall and melt any remaining ice. To access the electric plug, we had to pull the refrigerator out of a cubby. While it was out, my wife and I planned to clean the coil. When I was a kid, I watched my mother vacuum the coils on our Kelvinator refrigerator (does anyone remember that brand?). She noted that the dust collected on it making it harder for the unit to run. Since my wife is smaller (complement), she slipped behind the unit and inside the cubby. I asked her to remove the cover and

Fear not Many are watching television and social media to see the latest updates on the Coronavirus. It is essential to acknowledge some are living in fear of the Coronavirus. Please be mindful of the most vulnerable, including our elderly and individuals with compromised immune systems. We do need to take precautions and use sound judgment in our behavior. However, we must also remember not to operate from fear, which leads to panic. How can we remain calm and be at peace? “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” II Timothy 1:7 NKJV. These words were given to Timothy to not withdraw from ministry amid diversity and struggle. They are words we can use today as a reminder not to operate from fear but remain faithful to God. God will not lead us into behaviors that are in contradiction to His character. The fear sweeping our country is leading us into gluttony. When gluttony goes unchecked, it leads to greed. Before you rush to the store to buy up all the items on the shelf, check on your elderly neighbor who may not be able to drive. The Holy Spirit has a plan and purpose for our life. As we yield to the Spirit’s will and work in our life, He brings this purpose to reality. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we

have the ability to work and to live in God’s mighty power. If you discover fear is rising within you, remember the words of Jesus. “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world Rev. Angela Pleasants gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27 NKJV. The peace that Jesus gives guards our hearts and minds. Receiving the peace Jesus gave us does not mean we will never experience conflict. Nor does it mean we can ignore precautions about the Coronavirus. The peace Jesus gives is God’s shalom. It is the peace of wholeness and well-being. When we receive this peace, we can love and serve without fear. Instead of fear and panic, we should focus on what is pure, holy, and lovely. Give prayer, praise, and gratitude to God. Set your mind on things that are above. “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8 NKJV.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

Seeing Red By Dennis Siracusa This year a brilliant red male cardinal has chosen our home to attack. He has mated and is protecting his territory from imaginary intruders. His mate has built her nest in our holly tree nearby and stops her work occasionally to admire her brave husband beating his brains out on our windows. I wonder when it will stop. There is a grammatical idiom called “seeing red” which has to do with “falling into a state of extreme anger or competitive arousal such that it clouds one’s judgement.” This cardinal certainly seems to have the competitive arousal part down pat; still you have to wonder at his persistence in the face of constant failure and pain. All of this got me thinking of the recent damaging protesting throughout our country. Can you see the alarming parallels to our vigorous bird; violence, anger, persistent destruction of innocent property? I wonder where intelligent human beings begin thinking this is ok? Do you remember the old westerns? Most of us soaked up the stories because we knew good would triumph over evil; still, almost every story had an underhanded person shooting someone out of their saddle, or knocking them unconscious and stealing their property. I wonder if we steep ourselves in enough of those messages, can we adopt the idea that killing or stealing is just the way life is and what belongs to someone else might as well be mine? Proverbs 23:7 NIV warns us that “as a man thinks within himself, so he is.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has ssued its first set of recommendations on activities that people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can safely resume. The new guidance—which is based on the latest science — includes recommendations for how and when a fully vaccinated individual can visit with other people who are fully vaccinated and with other people who are not vaccinated. This guidance represents a first step toward returning to everyday activities in our communities. CDC will update these recommendations as more people are vaccinated, rates of COVID-19 in the community change, and additional scientific evidence becomes available. The guidelines state: Visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without wearing masks or staying 6 feet apart. Visit with unvaccinated people from one other household indoors without wearing masks or staying 6 feet apart if everyone in the other household is at low risk for severe disease. Refrain from quarantine and testing if they do not have symptoms of COVID-19 after contact with someone who has COVID-19. A person is considered fully

vaccinated two weeks after receiving the last required dose of vaccine. Although vaccinations are accelerating, CDC estimates that just 9.2% of the U.S. population has been fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine that the FDA has authorized for emergency use. While the new guidance is a positive step, the vast majority of people need to be fully vaccinated before COVID19 precautions can be lifted broadly. Until then, it is important that everyone continues to adhere to public health mitigation measures to protect the large number of people who remain unvaccinated. CDC recommends that

fully vaccinated people continue to take these COVID-19 precautions when in public, when visiting with unvaccinated people from multiple other households, and when around unvaccinated people who are at high risk of getting severely ill from COVID-19: Wear a well-fitted mask. Stay at least 6 feet from people you do not live with. Avoid medium- and large-sized inperson gatherings. Get tested if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. Follow guidance issued by individual employers. Bridge timbers stockpiled. The new Reid Park picnic shelter.

Getting ready to place bridge supports on the Rocky Branch Park trail.

Belmont Parks and Rec. director Zip Stowe on the Rocky Branch Park trail.

ROCKY BRANCH From Page 1 “The trail is being widened to give it multi-purpose use,” said Stowe. “Several of the old bridges are being taken out and replaced with seven new ones. The trail will be a lot better for walking. There will also be a new split rail fence.” Improved drainage and erosion control is also included in the work. A tour of the project last week showed a lot of work has taken place. The improved trail is nice and wide and covered in crushed gravel. The new bridges are sturdy and cross the creek at several scenic locations where the water flows over large and small stones. The overall feel is like being in a deep and lovely forest despite

the fact that downtown Belmont is barely a mile away. “We hope to bring groups to the trail for activities such as nature walks,” Stowe said. “It’s nice and peaceful in the woods.” Eventually the trail will link up with another section of the Carolina Thread Trail and go all the way to Cramerton. Rocky Branch Park has primarily been a mountain biking/hiking trail park. It first opened for use in July 2013 with a couple miles of biking and hiking trails. It was carved out of the woods at the bend in the road where Sacco St. and Woodrow Ave. meet. The initial construction was done mainly with volunteer labor and free land mak-

New Extension Master Gardener Volunteer course begins April 5th Beginning April 5th, students will begin the journey to becoming an Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Volunteer. New for 2021 is the delivery of the course; offering participants the same great program, but from the safety and comfort of their homes. Virtual delivery also means flexibility of personal schedules. The 12week virtual program will include weekly class gatherings with the Instructor, reading and homework assignments, quizzes, and fun interactive activities for everyone. Cost for the training is $125.00. Upon completion of the course, students enter a oneyear Internship, where they are required to volunteer 40 hours in their choice of many community activities. Interns

also are encouraged to join the MASTER GARDENER Group of Gaston County, where they will meet other folks who have completed the process. Once the Internship is completed, they become Certified Extension Master Gardener Volunteers and commit to 20 hours of volunteer service and 10 continuing education hours per year thereafter. Is the Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program for you? To help you decide if you should apply, ask yourself these questions- Do I want to learn more about the culture and maintenance of many types of plants? Am I eager to participate in a practical and intense training program? Do I look forward to sharing

Holy Angels adds innovative technology to its special education programming By Shawn Flynn Internationally recognized as innovators, Holy Angels continues to enhance its special education programming by adding two 70-inch Sharp Aquos Interactive Whiteboards in its classrooms in the Morrow Center. “This is transformative for our education program,” said Charli Sommers, program director for the Morrow Center. “It’s going to enhance our teachers’ abilities to provide modified and adaptive lessons to our residents.” A recent study showed Interactive whiteboards indicate positive effects on students with special educational needs and promote a multi-sensory style of learning. There is solid ground based on the results of studies to believe that IWBs are not only effective for instruction in general education classrooms, but also effective in special education settings making specific recommendations of the possible improvements that could be made utilizing IWB, for students with disabilities. Thus, students with severe attention difficulties were helped to maintain attendtion to tasks and those with fine motor difficulties worked on coordination. “I love the fact that instead of just talking to them I

have the opportunity to show them and explore,” said Ashley Brown, special education instructor for Morrow Center, Area 1. “I can use a pointer to go hand over hand to help them engage with the boards.” Not only do the boards come with state-of-the-art technology, but the stands are equipped with hydraulics, enabling instructors to raise the board to teach the entire class, or lower the board to allow individual students to interact with the lesson. Just a few weeks after installing the boards, instructors can already see a difference it’s making in the classroom. “It absolutely enhances the education program,” Somers said. “It provides a multi-sensory approach for the residents. They are able to go up to the board, touch them, hear what’s coming out of the speakers and see the graphics on the screen.” The residential-based program at Holy Angels ensures students can continue to receive the medical services they require throughout the school day, while also receiving the education they deserve. “By providing choicemaking options and increased involvement, these interactive whiteboards give our students the power to enhance their independence

Time for a change! Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org

Gas prices most expensive since April 2019 Pump prices in the Carolinas continue to increase on the week, with North and South Carolina state averages now being the most expensive daily average price since April 2019. North Carolina’s gas price average has climbed 22 cents since mid-February, while South Carolina’s average climbed 23 cents. North Carolina’s current gas price average sits at $2.57, seeing a 1-cent increase on the week. This is 28 cents more expensive than a month ago and 36 cents more expensive than last year. South Carolina’s current gas price average sits at $2.51, seeing a 3-cent increase on the week. This is 29 cents more expensive than a month ago and 41 cents more expensive than last year. National gas price average has reached $2.77, seeing a nickel increase on the week, which is a 31-cent jump in the last month and nearly 40 cents more expensive compared to a year ago, which was right before state lockdowns. Pump prices are increasing as refinery utilization is at an all-time low and crude oil prices surged by more than $2/bbl to $66/bbl the highest price in nearly two years. The jump in crude followed OPEC’s surprise decision to minimally increase production in April.

This past week has spoiled us with this spring-like weather! It has been so nice seeing sunshine, hearing the birds sing, and the mud finally drying up. At least for now, the rains have ceased, and the gray sky has cleared. This kind of weather gives us a bad case of spring fever. It makes us yearn for a change. In a life often dark and dreary, without hope, we long for a change. That change can be found in Jesus. As Jesus was nailed to the cross, He was crucified between two criminals. Many people came by Jesus and mocked Him. Even one of the criminals beside Jesus mocked Him as well, telling Him to save them and Himself. The other criminal began to rebuke his fellow criminal, asking him if he did not fear God since both were facing the same fate on the cross. He admitted that he and the other criminal were deserving of death for their crimes, yet Jesus was innocent, and had done nothing worthy of death. He then asked Jesus to remember him when He entered His heavenly kingdom. Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43, ESV). This dying criminal found

change that horrific day as he and Jesus were dying. He had spent a lifetime living for himself, indulging in a life of crime and sin. In the last moments of his life, he found what his life had longed for, Jesus. If you have never experienced the lifechanging love of Jesus, now is the perfect time for a change. Like the criminal, it begins with repentance. When we come to Jesus, we must be ready for change, sorry for what we have been. This leads to confession, acknowledging what we have done. The criminal acknowledged what he was, and that he deserved death. He also found forgiveness through his faith in Jesus as Lord. When we come by faith in Jesus, with repentant hearts, we will also find forgiveness. Ultimately this dying criminal found eternal life that day on the cross. He would join Jesus forever in heaven, paradise! A life-changing experience with Jesus Christ grounded in faith leads to forgiveness, salvation, and paradise with Jesus for all eternity. Today in heaven Jesus is on His throne, and that criminal who found a change in Jesus that day is there too. Are you ready for a change though Jesus? Jesus is ready to save you, forgive you, and give you eternal life. Maybe today it’s time for a change!

Jenkins named finalist in 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program

Belmont Abbey story/photo

Kuhlman leads Crusaders to semifinal victory Maria Kuhlman (pictured #15) went 6-for-8 from three-point range to lead the Belmont Abbey women’s basketball team to a 74-59 win over no. 4 seed Tusculum in NCAA Southeast Regional semifinal action this evening. The win marks the 19th straight for the Crusaders, who now own a 23-2 record on the year. How It Happened Brittany Autry scored the first basket of the contest, in a first quarter that was back and forth. A layup by Kuhlman with less than a minute to go in the quarter tied the game at 10, though Tusculum had a 13-10 lead when the period expired. A 5-0 run midway through

the second pulled The Abbey to within three, at 22-19. The tough Crusader defense did not give up a field goal over the last three and a half minutes of the quarter, and The Abbey pulled to within four, 28-24 at halftime. The Crusader offense exploded in the third. The team went opened the quarter with a 5-0 run. Autry scored six straight Abbey points. Kuhlman scored nine points in the last two minutes, and the Crusaders held a 49-44 lead heading into the final period. Two free throws by Keyanna Spivey to start the third made it an 11-2 Abbey run. The Crusaders made their free throws down the stretch to wrap up the 74-59 victory.
