Belmont history available for viewing on YouTube By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
As most folks know, all sorts of things from the sublime to the ridiculous can be seen on YouTube. Well, here’s an interesting fact, there are several videos on there of Belmont during the early to mid 20th century made from “home movies” shot by local folks. One of the YouTube videos shows newsreel film shot during the 1930s and 1940s in both Belmont and Kings Mountain. The video includes interviews with mill workers, action from a 1940 flood, and Herbert Hoover speaking to a huge crowd at the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain celebration.
The YouTube video was made and posted by Belmont’s Harding Stowe using original home movies actually shot on the scenes by his uncle, the late Daniel Stowe. “When he passed away I got the films and had them digitalized by a company in Pennsylvania,” Harding said when the first film aired on YouTube in 2013. “I thought other people might want to see them so I posted the video. He started taking movies in the 1920s and the other films are travel and family stuff.” In one early Belmont YouTube video, you see female workers leaving the Majestic Mill while a group of men in overalls hunker under a shade See HISTORY, Page 3
Belmont council gets report on City’s response to COVID19 At its June 1 meeting the Belmont city council was updated with a timeline report by city manager Adrian Miller illustrating the commitment and speed with which the City, the DBDA, private business and other local organizations have come together for the good of the community. A key element to the relief actions, but not listed separately – as the efforts have been constant and are ongoing, is increased communication with downtown businesses and other organizations to share information, assess needs and bolster business cooperation. Here’s what Belmont city manager Adrian Miller had to say about the efforts.
“When businesses had to close or reduce operations in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had a choice to sit back and see what would happen to our local businesses or we could roll up our sleeves and get to work to help,” he said. “Our Main Street board and staff created the “Keep the Lights on in Belmont” campaign to promote local businesses. A dedicated team of community volunteers, business owners, city staff, and the Mayor and City Council came up with multiple ways to help keep our businesses open during the past 3 months. The Gaston County Travel and Tourism team helped us promote these efforts, and we are See REPORT, Page 4

New Belmont Abbey residence hall project making progress By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Progress continues on the new residence hall under construction on the campus of Belmont Abbey college. Last October, ground was broken on the 136-room residence hall. The largest capital investment in the college’s history, the new hall will primarily serve upperclassmen but also add new classroom, office, and meeting space. MKC Architects designed the new building to mirror the Gothic architecture prominent on the college’s campus. University Housing Solutions is the contractor building the new facility. The structure is five stories, with the first story having meeting areas, social See ABBEY, Page 2

Each residence floor will have a kitchenette, study areas, a laundry area, and a gathering area on each side. For security, the upper floors will only be accessible via the elevator and the stairwell via the student’s magnetic ID that will permit them to their floor. The initial goal was to have the building ready for students to occupy in August when classes resume. However, the weather had a say in that dream. Rolando Rivas, Abbey director of marketing and communications, explained.

To accommodate the students, mostly juniors and seniors, who were scheduled to make the new hall their home away from home, the Abbey has come up with a unique idea. “The contractor will build prefab housing on campus for those students,” Rivas said. “Each student will have one room.” The contractor will pick up the tab for the prefab units. A Message from the Mt. Holly Mayor Dozens of North Carolina mayors released a statement recently in light of the death of George Floyd, voicing their dismay at Mr. Floyd’s death, extending support to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and vowing to fight systemic racism within police forces and their cities. I am not part of the NC Metro Mayors Association; therefore, I did not have the opportunity to be one of over 70 mayors to sign this statement. During Thursday’s City Council Special Meeting, the following proclamation will be issued: “As the Mount Holly City Council, we have come together to express our abhorrence of the horrific murder of George Floyd, an act of unspeakable violence, cold inhumanity and racism. The photographic evidence of this act speaks for himself. Mr. Floyd was suffocated to death by a Minneapolis police officer while pleading for his life as three other officers knelt or stood by and did nothing to help him, even as he called out, “I can’t breathe.” As a society, we cannot tolerate this kind of police violence
rooted in system racism. As a city council, we work closely with the police leadership in our cities, and we know that they also will not tolerate this kind of police violence and racism within their forces. Such acts not only harm innocent people, but they also deeply erode trust in our police forces, despite the good work of so many officers every day – officers who themselves abhor the racism and violence so evident in the death of George Floyd. Our hearts go out to Mr. Floyd and his family. We support Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis in his call for justice and accountability. We expect a full and fair trial of the police officers involved. We also support the rights of those who are peacefully protesting and honoring the memory of George Floyd and countless others that have been victims of systemic racism and police violence. Let’s work together to ensure that protests remain peaceful and stay focused on building equitable and just cities for all. And we pledge to make every effort within our power to fight system racism within our police forces, cities and nation.” Mout Holly Mayor Bryan Hough

McAdenville Flood 1940 scenes from Daniel Stowe home movie posted on YouTube by nephew Harding Stowe.
HISTORY From Page 1 tree taking a break. The camera also encounters a group of young girls and films them giggling while a fellow mill hand named Charles Huggins holds a microphone and asks how they like their lollipops. Huggins also asks his colleagues how they like their jobs and gets mostly positive comments in return. Another portion of the video was shot at the Chronicle Mill. Other segments from the Belmont portion shows camera-shy women in cotton print dresses darting behind bushes to avoid the camera lens, and downtown Belmont seen through the window of a car driving along Main Street. Other segments of the film shows a flood scene dated 1940 and a steel cantilever bridge in danger of being washed away. The bridge is not identified but it might be the one that was over the South Fork River in McAden-
ville at that time. The Kings Mountain portion of the film shows US President Herbert Hoover addressing a huge crowd on the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. Folks in the film are seen swarming around the monument at the top of the battlefield, Hoover speaking from a large stage draped with flags, and the crowd dispersing in a cloud of dust. Another old time Belmont YouTube video posted by Stowe is entitled School Days and Baseball. This clip features children walking into a school with a man and teachers watching over them. Most of the boys are wearing bib overalls. Another segment shows a lively crowd at a baseball game. The players are wearing uniforms with P&L on their jerseys. Mill village houses are in the background. To see these and other historic Belmont videos, visit YouTube and type in Belmont NC History and be prepared to open a window
on a fascinating look back at our past. With the invention of portable movie cameras such as the one Daniel Stowe used, other folks became interested in filming hometown movies. One man, H. Lee Waters, recorded “slices of life” with his camera in Gaston and Cleveland Counties, and beyond, in the same time period as the film in the YouTube video. Waters, (1902-1997), was born in Caroleen and operated a photo studio in Lexington for 60 years. During the period 1936-1942, he traveled across North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and South Carolina shooting films of towns and the people in them. Waters made 252 films in a total of 118 communities and titled the series “Movies of Local People”. The films were screened in movie theaters and many of them are archived in the Duke University library. Films that Waters shot in Cramerton and Gastonia are listed on the Duke library site.

REPORT From Page 1 grateful for their assistance. I am so very proud of how our community rallied together to keep the lights on in Belmont. There were depressing days in March with very little traffic in downtown, but our community came together to support their neighbors’ businesses, and we are stronger now than we were before this crisis. There wasn’t a playbook for this, and the outcome was far from certain, but we did it. We are Belmont Strong!” Here’s the timeline March 12: Gaston County declared a state of emergency due to COVID-19. The City, along with DBDA leadership, created a “Keep The Lights On” Initiative to include videos to bring community awareness and unity, a City webpage to make it easier for customers to learn of changes to business hours and offerings, a DBDA relief fund and DBDA Keep The Lights On website to make donating easier, and a City small business emergency loan program. March 19: Community attention was captured for this initiative with a “Keep The Lights on in Belmont” video bringing stark awareness to the effects COVID-19 could have on small downtown businesses and informed viewers of a City “Keep the Lights On” webpage for updated information on businesses. (The video had 31,588 hits on FB with 197 engagements.) By March 20: The City had designated and distributed 10 minute curbside
pickup cones/signs to make it easier for customers and businesses to function in this new environment. March 30: City Council approved a Small Business Emergency Loan Program for Belmont businesses with a fund of $400,000, offering loans of $10,000 each. April 2: DBDA and City cooperation furthered community connection with the “Signs” video showing retail and restaurant owners with hashtag signs, encouraging support of downtown businesses and continuing to push folks to the City “Keep The Lights On” webpage. That City webpage had, by this point in time, an addition of a donation button which linked to the DBDA relief fund website, which had also been created during this time for donation opportunities. (The “Signs” video was viewed 12,876 on FB with 455 engagements and had 7,300 thru plays.) As of May 6, $1,621.74 had been raised as Keep The Lights On donations To bolster spirits and a sense of community, the hashtag signs used in the video were placed in front of the downtown businesses. April 9: City Council handed checks out for the first wave of approved small business loans from its new program. April 17: Nellies, City of Belmont, Creative Solutions, Elevation Church and Convoy of Hope held a distribution event for those in need of food, cleaning and hygiene supplies. 30,000 lbs of food
was distributed in 1.5 hours. #BelmontStrong began with a Carolina Droneworks video of the event which reached 8,269 people and had 1,434 engagements. Members of the DBDA board and committees also contributed by volunteering their services for this event. April 20: EV committee drafted and Phil sent out an FDIC assistance memo, notifying property owners that they could get assistance from mortgages which would allow them to, in turn, provide the same, as rent relief, to their tenants. April 21: EV committee sent out a letter to state representatives suggesting they consider legislation to give grants to businesses and offering a suggestion of using local programs such as our own Main Street program to administer it - helping to assure that small businesses that need it actually get the funds. April 24: A cross functional committee was formed of DBDA and local business leaders for a Relief Concert to benefit downtown businesses. This will be a larger concert than anything Belmont has ever seen. This committee is meeting every two weeks with its eight sub committee meetings held in between those times. April 26: Adrian informed Phil that an anonymous donor wished to give $10,000 for support of downtown businesses. Adrian suggested the DBDA relief fund was the best place for that donation and the Main Street/DBDA
Positive messages like this one were posted all over Belmont in March. Photo by Alan Hodge executive board, and Phil, held meetings to discuss best distribution methods. April 29: The City and DBDA leadership held a virtual meeting with Carolina Droneworks regarding some new technology they had acquired to evaluate potential uses and benefits. May 1-3: The promotions committee held a Virtual 5K Run/Walk where a “Keep the Lights On” koozie was produced, 5K webpage created, multiple social media posts and video created, blog and press release written. The 5K had 151 registrants. $300 was donated for the grand prize winner from anonymous donors. Three winners were announced during a FB live event on May 4 that reached 1,152 people and had 377 engagements. $4,120.79 was raised.

Letter to the Editor...
I almost forgot! Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church , Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
The other day, I was doing some repairs on the side porch of our house. When I started taking some of the old boards off, I noticed some measurements my brother and I had written on the inside boards when we built the porch. It has been twenty years since we built that porch! As I looked at those markings, I remembered all that has happened in that time. My wife and I were in our early twenties, and our oldest child was just a baby. God has been so good to us in that twenty years! In this life, we all need times of reflection, to focus on what God has done for us. Exodus 16:31-35, records God’s call of remembrance to Israel. As Israel left Egypt on the way to the Promised Land, they wandered forty years in the desert because of their rebellion against God. They faced a barren, dry desert. There was no food or water. God in His love gave them water from a rock. He gave them food from heaven. They called it manna. Israel made bread from that substance that fell from the sky. For those forty years, God gave them food every day. God commanded that Aaron the priest keep a small
portion of manna in a jar so that Israel would always be reminded of how He had provided for them. As Christians, we observe communion. Rev. Trent Tankin Through the bread and cup, we celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for us. In this life we need time to reflect. It is easy in the chaos of life to forget the goodness of God. Even in the Promised Land, Israel faced enemies and invasion. They faced droughts and famine. Today, we face so much in this life. This year has been a time of pandemic and struggle. During these times we can reflect on all that God has done. Israel had the manna to remember, we have the bread and the cup. In our uncertain age, we celebrate so we never forget. Just as those measurements on a twenty-year-old piece of wood remind me of what God has done in my life, good times and bad, we reflect on God. Israel had its manna. We have our Lord’s Supper, the bread and cup. We can never forget the sacrificial love of Jesus. Israel had manna for forty years until they entered the Promised Land. We observe our Lord’s Supper until Jesus returns. Today as we reflect, we remember the love of Jesus.

A Message from Mt. Holly City Manager Greetings to all: I would like to take this opportunity to speak about the recent incident in Minneapolis involving the death of George Floyd as a result of an encounter he had with certain Minneapolis Police Officers. Needless to say, it was a tragic situation that has affected so many people in so many ways. Being an African-American man I can identify with the hurt and frustration felt by so many due to racism. I also can identify with being an African-American man that has seen the hope that change can bring, which is manifested in the position that I hold as the City Manager of a small southern town as appointed by an all-white City Council. This is an example of the kind of change that has to take place in order for other changes to come into play. I have worked for the City of Mount Holly for thirtythree (33) years and have held several different positions along the way of becoming the City Manager, the highest employee position. This is important because in doing so it denotes change and progress and has allowed me the opportunity to make decisions that can ultimately affect the quality of life in the Mount Holly community, such as hiring the current Police Chief, who is sensitive to the needs of our community. The message that I would like to convey is of leadership, accountability, relationship and unity. If these areas work together then the result will be one of growth, prog-

ress and prosperity. I’m saddened by the fact that people might not want to see the truth in working in the areas named above, as opposed to creating unnecessary chaos at the detriment of others. Instead of being a follower of bad behavior take the lead in showing others that you are the standard for doing things the right way, after all, that’s what true leadership is all about. The recent peaceful protest in Mount Holly is an example of doing things the right way and what true leadership looks like. In closing, it’s my hope that if one truly wants to use race as a motivator to take action, then let that action be positive and impactful. Please consider that as a person of
color I am a leader in Mount Holly and would not ever support any kind of racist behavior by the Mount Holly Police Department or any city employee under my authority as the City Manager. I pray that you hear my words and that the spirit of my words will be a positive influence to others. Please see the importance of humanity and being kind to your fellow man. Let us all come together and work towards setting the standard for unity and leadership. May God bless us all, and let the truth set us free. Sincerely, Danny Jackson Mt. Holly City Manager
Gaston County approves budget, lowers property tax rate In a unanimous vote the Gaston County Board of Commissioners have approved the County’s FY21 budget, which provides a one-cent decrease in property taxes for residents. It drops the county’s property tax rate to 83 cents for every $100 of valued property – the lowest rate since 2001. When looked at per resident, Gaston County spends the second least of the top 10 most populous North Carolina counties – meaning residents get some of the best bang for their buck from county services. The budget also achieves several other significant goals in what is the first budget presented to the board by Dr. Kim Eagle. Provides mid-year merit raises for employees; Does not furlough or layoff any employees; A more than $6 million decrease in planned general fund expenditures to account for the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 crisis; No delay in implementation of CARE
Plan capital projects; Reduces the amount of fund balance used to balance the budget. “No manager would want their first budget to be under the shadow of COVID-19, Eagle said. “But it was the hand we were dealt. And our budget team worked countless hours to present the board with a budget that meets my goals and will serve our citizens well. The Board of Commissioners commended Dr. Eagle for a thorough and detailed budget presentation, and was encouraged by the diligence of staff to present a lean budget that keeps the same level of service to the community while taking care of employees who have performed admirably under trying circumstances. The goal for the county and its board is to pass a budget next year that does not spend any money from its fund balance – so long as the economy makes an appropriate recovery from the recession caused by COVID-19.

Rev. Dr. Claude Williams prays with those gathered.

Photos by Bill Ward
Prayer walk held in Stanley ley last week and dozens more who had conveyed that
they could not be there would be praying. The event was organized by United Action of Stanley Churches, Rev Dr Claude Williams, Pastor Noel Sweezy, Bill Ward. It was billed as not a march, vigil nor protest, no political inferences, no signs, just members of the community coming together to pray, in unity, for the town, the state, the nation. It began at 9am at the UASC welcome center, one group proceeded northwest on Hwy. 27, crossed the
tracks at old 1st UMC campus and back down Main to the clock. The second group went southeast on 27 and across the tracks in front of Stanley hardware to the clock. It lasted about an hour with various local Pastors leading in prayer, singing Amazing Grace and praying individually. Elisa Brittain, Dan Otto, and Ileana Castillo. Afterwards, several stayed around to discuss the importance of carrying this effort forward to positively address current events.

GCM Staff Highlight... It’s time for another GCM Highlight The Gaston County Museum in Dallas has a staff full of talented and wonderful people, and they would like people to get to know them a little better. What’s your name and what do you do at GCM? My name is Alexander Brooks and I am the Education Manager for the Museum. That means anything that has an educational, interactive or programming element to it, I most likely have a hand in it somehow. And while I’m usually found (alongside Patrick) in school tours, I also spend a large amount of time doing research, developing new initiatives and representing the museum in local, state and regional organizations. I’m

also one of two artists here on staff, so I also get to create a lot of really fun things we use in both programming and media. When you’re not working at GCM, what’s your favorite thing to do for fun? Tough question - I’m one of those people that really has too many hobbies. I love art, so I do spend a good chunk of my time on it. Unfortunately, I do a lot of commission work, so rarely do I have the time to create things that I want to create! And I love to do costuming for the theatre. It’s so much fun to add that final element that helps to bring a character to life. I also love to read, cook, and hang out with friends. One of my favorite things to do though go kayaking with my

Anice Ingle is the manager.. “We will offer the same love, care, and top quality grooming at our new location as we had downtown,” said staff member Madison Taylor. The new location will have more convenient park-

Recently I observed an 18 wheeler in a ditch. A few hours later, where it happened remained fuzzy because the “how on earth did he do that” was more interesting than where it was done. Similarly, in a conversation with Bev a couple days ago, she reminded me of information she had told me three months ago but which sounded completely foreign to me in the retelling. Bev has an awesome memory so I don’t doubt her account. I seem to have a great many things going on in my head all the time so it’s easy to isolate and focus on interesting bits and pieces and miss others. I bent my head in my regular Mea Culpa and asked her to recount the information. This time I paid attention. How often too, are all of us observing only partially? Bev and I can’t duplicate her mom’s vegetable soup, or her grandma’s chicken and pastry even though we ate them a lot and watched the prep; obviously we didn’t watch well enough. An “A-lister” movie star admitted battling alcoholism recently. His “I like a glass of wine with dinner” morphed into much more and destroyed his marriage. He thought he could handle alcohol but learned tragically, he couldn’t. My Father sold liquor wholesale but he only consumed 1 martini a few nights a week. My mother similarly had an occasional Manhattan. They were able to resist the slide to alcoholism but many can’t and I bordered on overindulgence myself. Now I abstain completely and if we think the alcohol industry is our friend, we are wrong. Their rhetoric, about “drinking responsibly and taking a designated driver with us,” falls way short
of their real thoughts to “drink, drink, drink because I want your money.” And because we only allow ourselves to superficially consider Dennis Siracusa our behavior we fail to consider, really consider, the danger, waste, and misdirection of time and opportunity due to lethargy, or binging. In 1Corinthinans 13:12 NLT Our Lord reminds us that until we see Jesus “face to face” upon His return, we will not have full understanding. “Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror but then we will see with perfect clarity.” Why is this true? It’s because God and creation are infinite and we aren’t. In fact, we can’t and often won’t even try to see clearly. The Australian singing group Hillsong caught this truth in their song So Will I (100 Billion x). In verse 2 they write about God… “ “And as You speak A billion galaxies are born In the vapor of your breath the planets form” We can’t grasp God, infiniteness, or eternity, or even why barnacle geese are avoiding the USSR now and have relocated 1,000 miles away. I know we need to try; we need to slow down and do better at seeing, hearing, and understanding and God’s Holy Spirit is standing by to help us. Let’s pray and ask for His help; in that clarity and understanding we’ll see more of ourselves.

South Point honors spring sports seniors By Charlotte Sautner This is the final article in a series about the seniors on South Point’s spring sports teams. It focuses on the members of the South Point track and field teams. Assistant Coach Chris Roberts writes: Alex Long Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia Alex Long will be attending Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia this Fall. Alex embodies the characteristics of humor, character and perseverance. Focusing on the mile and two-mile races, Alex was always wanting to break down splits with the distance coach and learn more about how he could continue to improve his times. While bringing jokes of the day to the group each practice, he presented the importance of balance.
The balance of both enjoying what you do and the people around you, while also being able to lock into a focused drive and determination each day. Justin Tolbert North Carolina A&T Justin Tolbert will be attending North Carolina A&T in the Fall. He has been a leader on the Boys Track and Field Team, focusing on the 400 and 800 events these past couple years. He has also been the anchor of the boys 4x800 the past two years, as a result of both his tremendous work ethic and grit. For Justin, the end of practice was usually translated to mean the start of his second workout. His teammates could see him putting in extra mileage both before and after every practice. His coaches are nothing but grateful for the years to which he has led by the in-
credible example that he is. Nathan Brown Clemson University Nathan Brown will be continuing his academic career at Clemson University. Over his time with the Boys Track and Field Team, Nathan has competed in almost all distance events, but enjoys being able to take on the challenge of an 800. As he has proven to be a tremendous student in the classroom, currently being top-10 in his class with a GPA above a 4.5, has also proven himself to have a great runners intellect. Josh Millspaw UNC Chapel Hill Josh Millspaw will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a team, you look for some of your more experienced athletes to establish a level of accountability and

work ethic. The role model and gift that Josh has been for the team’s younger athletes is unmeasurable. Taking on new events during meets, asking for extra workouts when school obligations kept him from practice, and assisting his teammates whenever possible, Josh helped spark the family and team-based culture that the distance team has developed. Danielle Tracy UNCC Danielle Tracy will be attending the University of Carolina at Charlotte, in the Fall. While Danielle committed herself to the challenge of sprinting, her presence was always a gift to the athletes around her. Genuine joy in the improvement of her teammates and constant encouragement were a few of the many skills of Danielle, that came alongside a great personal drive and work ethic both on the track and in the classroom. Mary Smallwood Alabama Next year, Mary Smallwood will be attending Alabama University. She has been a leader on the Girls Track and Field team these past few years, as she has run the 800 both individually and on the relay team. Mary was always lifting the spirits of her teammates and bringing humor to each practice. While also pushing herself
each day to be better, she also was a role model for the younger athletes and helped spark the culture that has been created within the distance team. Cheyenne MacKinnon Western Carolina University Cheyenne MacKinnon will be continuing her academic career at Western Carolina University. While being a leader to fellow throwers on the Girls Track and Field team, Cheyenne’s drive to grow as both a student and an athlete was remarkable. She could always be found both pushing herself to further develop her skills and find ways in which she could have a positive impact on the people around her. Jaheim Huntley Central Piedmont Community College Jaheim Huntley will be attending Central Piedmont Community College in the Fall. While he focused on a mix of sprinting and middle distance, he was always pushing himself to compete at his best ability. He took on the challenge of new races and would take time to complete workouts after practice, always wanting to improve. Makenna Pallozzi UNC at Asheville Makenna Pallozzi will be continuing both her academic
and athletic career at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Characteristics that her coaches would use to describe her are resilient, humble, driven, and grateful. Makenna has fought through injuries and had a move her senior year that brought her halfway across the country. Her responses to different barriers, challenges, and experiences, have been nothing but self-improvement and success. While she has a champion mentality and ability, Makenna is constantly expressing gratitude to coaches for helping her better improve her craft. As she has worked incredibly hard to earn her well-deserved academic and athletic successes this past year, she will continue to do great things in the future and have a positive impact on the people around her. Jack Bragg Western Carolina University Next year, Jack Bragg will be continuing his academic career at Western Carolina University. As both a student and an athlete, Jack was always reaching for new goals and admirable aspirations. If he wasn’t working hard in speed workouts, he could be found listening intently to his coaches about what areas of his sport could be improved.
