A new and unusual school year begins in Gaston County By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The 2020-2021 Gaston County Schools academic year began on August 17, but teachers and other staff members were on the job the week before getting rooms ready for students. The traditional array of close rows of desks and chairs has been replaced
by a socially distant setup. Floors are marked to show where students should stand when waiting for rides or in hallways. Temperatures are being taken. Students are going to be attending “in person” learning in rotating shifts. In other words, things have been altered to accommodate the new reality
brought on by COVID-19. Belmont Central Elementary principal Phyllis Jacobs described what’s going on there, but her remarks pretty much apply to all schools in the county. “We know it’s different but our mission and purpose is the best interest of everyone,” she said. “We have rallied around each

can expect a safe environment for students and staff. We are excited to welcome everyone back and for the students to learn and grow.
We have never experienced anything like this before, but we know the business of school.” See SCHOOL, Page 10
Cramerton Girl Scout creates Caring Cupboards By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Some people might think that Girl Scouts sell cookies once a year and sit around a campfire eating s’mores. Wrong! And in the case of Kathryn Cupp of Cramerton it’s very, very, wrong. Cupp, 16, is a Stuart Cramer High senior who is a member of Scout Troop 20416 based at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Gastonia. She’s been in scouting since childhood and risen in the ranks from Daisy to her current status as an Ambassador. Over the years, Cupp has done service projects that earned her a Bronze and Silver Award. When the time came to go for her Gold Award, she gave it some deep thought and came up with the concept of “Caring Cupboards” which are freestanding boxes filled with food and toiletries that folks can avail themselves of for free. Cupp explained how she formulated the plan and carried it out.
This is an architectural rendering of how the planned warehouse in North Belmont will look when completed.
Big development underway in North Belmont By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

hours. Things like brownies and rice crispy treats and cookies. I advertised them on Instagram and Facebook and spent eight hours delivering them. It was a lot of hard work.”
Cupp took the money to local home improvement stores and bought the wood and other materials to build three Caring Cupboards. She did a lot of the sawing and See SCOUT, Page 4
After many months of planning, construction began last week on a major development in North Belmont. The project will be a business park at Woodlawn and Cason streets. The development will be known as River West Business Park. The rezoning applicant was Belmont Industrial, LLC represented by Scott Bortzk. The rezoning was approved at the Nov. 11, 2019 meeting of the Belmont city council. Plans are for two ware-
house and office structures to be built with a total area of 60,000 sq. ft. The property where the project will take place is owned by Alliance Real Estate III. When completed, it is estimated the project could generate 250 to 350 new jobs. The project will likely require road improvements one of which would eliminate the blind intersection at Acme Rd. and Woodlawn and also shut a section of Centerview St. The 40 acre site where the development is slated has See NORTH BELMONT, Page 4

and his little chin commenced to trembling and he busted out boohooing. We’ve had our share of ice storms Alan Hodge too. I hate ice storms Banner-News Editor with a passion and it would suit me fine if we never had another one. I forget how many years ago it was ..20?..25?... that we had that awful ice storm. We had no power for two weeks. To stay warm at night we put on so many layers of clothes and covers that it was impossible to turn over. Only my face was visible from the cocoon-like wrappings. I felt like a cross between an Egyptian mummy and a big ol’ termater worm. We’ve had brushes with tornadoes too. What seems like only yesterday, one came really close to our house- at night- the worst time. I was in bed and heard a noise like a jet that was getting louder and louder. Some sort of primordial connect between my brain and my bowels told me it was a twister. Oh! Dorothy! Anyway, we ran to the closet beneath the stairs and sat on cans of food and the hot water heater was inches away. Funny, it never occurred to me until just now we could have been scalded. I try to see the sunny side of things most days. It could be worse. When my sister Sherry moved to Pasadena she had only been there a short while when a “big one” earthquake struck and threw her out of the bed in the middle of the night. As far as floods, as many of you who know a little about the history of our region are aware the Great Flood of 1916 took out every bridge and town along the Catawba River from the mountains to South Carolina. The whole point of this ramble is just to say we have only a modicum of control over Mother Nature so we just have to learn to roll with her punches and she throws a lot of them below the belt and often follows up with a spinning back fist.
By Dennis Siracusa I’ve backpacked, camped, fished and hiked a lot in Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. Seldom were mountainous paths easy and straight and sometimes that was their appeal; discovering something new and challenging along and around every corner. In 70+ years I’ve discovered that, in life, there is more going on than we can imagine. Tons of meandering crooked trails are fun and inviting but many are not at all helpful. Around 1830, Horace Mann began maneuvering to have our public education system underwritten by the government, to eradicate Christian influence in our schools, and to replace it with his Universalist, elitist Unitarian dogma. Interestingly, Mann hated Christianity and particularly the Calvinist perspective but he welcomed Christian women teachers because they were hard workers pressing through harsh conditions for little pay. He rejected the Biblical idea of original sin and felt men were inherently good and would keep getting better through education. If we look around we can see he led us onto a very dangerous and destructive public education crooked trail with not a fragment of truth in it. Yesterday I read an admission by an actress and wife of a prominent democratic spokesperson, that she taught her two teenage daughters about
sex by watching pornography with them. I almost fell off my chair; clearly another crooked trail. The bible defines involvement with pornography as immoral. In Proverbs 5:6 the writer speaks about an immoral woman but it could be just as appropriate for immoral men. “For she (he, sic) cares nothing at all about the path to life. She (he, sic) staggers down a crooked trail and doesn’t even realize it.” NLT We should all grieve for this family and the repercussions, on their life, of their choices. If we consider sin in the big picture, doesn’t it seem that pride and sexual immorality are two of the most tenacious and destructive root sins mankind deals with? Pride seems to have its foundation in a seared mind while sexual perversion is rooted in a seriously damaged heart. Proverbs 4: 14-16 is vitally instructive. “Don’t do as the wicked do, and don’t follow the path of evildoers. Don’t even think about it; don’t go that way. Turn away and keep
moving. For evil people c a n ’ t sleep until they’ve done their evil deed Dennis Siracusa for the day.” NLT We must grasp the wonder of God’s infiniteness, righteousness, and wisdom because, as Jesus tells us in John 15:5, we need God for everything and should fear not staying close to Him and try navigating life by our own self constructed wisdom. All of creation is about God and for some reason He has allowed us all extreme leeway with life choices. I don’t know why but I do believe judgement day is just around the corner and sickeningly as Matthew teaches in Matthew 7:13, many are involving themselves with destructive crooked trails and as such, are on a wide path to eternal destruction unless they wake up, honor God, and obey Him here; now.

Don’t tempt me! Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
Have you ever noticed just how much stuff is set around the checkout line at the grocery store? There are all kinds of candies, magazines, and various small items for sale. All of these things are put in place to entice us to make additional purchases as we are paying for our goods. It can be a big temptation, especially the candy for our kids! As we talk so much of living for God, and accomplishing His plan in our lives, we cannot forget the greatest thing standing in our way, Satan. We have an enemy who wants to destroy our lives, and his greatest tool is temptation. In Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus had begun His earthly ministry, having been baptized by John the Baptist. The Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, where he fasted forty days and nights. At this time Satan appeared, tempting Him. Jesus is completely God, and He was completely man. He was exhausted and hungry. Satan came to tempt Jesus in this time of weakness. He first told Jesus to turn the stones into bread. Jesus responded by quoting Scripture, that man needed God more than bread. Satan led Jesus to the top of the Temple, trying to get Him to jump off, telling Him that angels would protect Him. Jesus told him God is not to be tempted. Finally, Satan showed Jesus all of the world’s kingdoms, and promised them to Him if He would worship him. Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan!” (Matthew 4:10, ESV). Satan left, and angels came and ministered to Jesus. If Satan will dare tempt Jesus, he will tempt us too. He knows exactly what it takes to get our attention! He will customize temptations just for us. Satan uses all types of temptations to lead us away from God. He tempts with fear. We live in a fearful
age of politics and pandemics. Satan plays on the fears we are experiencing. Satan will tempt with distractions. He was attempting to distract Jesus from the world changing ministry He was beginning. He will distract us. When we try to pray, read the Bible, or Rev. Trent Tankin even listen to a church service, our minds are full of all types of distractions. Satan’s greatest temptation is lies. He will lie to us. Everything he told Jesus was a lie. If he will lie to Jesus, he will lie to us. Everything about Satan is a lie, he is the father of lies. Even though Satan will tempt us, we know that if we resist him, he will flee. Jesus told him to go away, and he did. You will surely face temptations, yet God will go with you in such times. He will provide a way out. Stand strong in Jesus, resist Satan. Tell him to go away, and he will! God is bigger than anything Satan can throw your way!

From the Wizard of Oz…The house began to pitch, the kitchen took a slitch, it landed on the wicked witch in the middle of a ditch. Well, a couple of Sunday mornings ago I was putting my underpants in a drawer upstairs and the house did indeed begin to pitch. More precisely, the dresser mirror began to shiver and shimmy and from downstairs in the kitchen I heard Sharon holler “Alan, what are you doing??” because plates were a rattlin’ and she thought I was upstairs jumping up and down. Nope. It was our recent earthquake. This got me to thinking about other natural disasters that have come our way- and that we survived. Hot on the heels of the earthquake was the tropical storm that recently hit our coast and caused considerable damage. Hearing and seeing the reports took me back in my mind to about three years ago when we went to the beach a week after Hurricane Florence hit. I will never forget the sight of a large sailboat on top of a house at Galivant’s Ferry and field after field flooded with black water and all the boarded up buildings at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion and the deserted hotels and streets with dried seaweed and scrap paper blowing along them. Another hurricane we endured that sticks in my mind- and I’m sure in a lot of yours- is Hugo. I hope nothing like that ever comes here again. I remember going outside the next morning and the thing that struck me was the smell of pine sap from all the downed trees. I forget how long we went without electricity, but I do recall going to the ice house in Ranlo where they were giving out free ice before it all melted. A guy was handing out the bags to a mob gathered at the foot of the loading dock. A puddle of greasy melted ice water had formed on the pave and people were trying to keep their feet dry so they were standing back a bit but every time the ice house men came out on the dock and started throwing bags, the crowd would surge forward. I saw a little kid standing at the front of the line and when the rush began he was knocked down and stood up soaked in filthy melt water and lo, and behold, his little eyes filled with tears

Conference Carolinas Board of Directors to continue deliberations on competing in fall The Conference Carolinas Board of Directors have agreed to continue deliberations on competing in fall intercollegiate athletics after receiving additional guidance from the NCAA Sport Science Institute on Tuesday evening. The board unanimously affirmed the following statement last Tuesday: The Conference Carolinas Board of Directors, having during our meeting today received new information from the NCAA pertaining to testing and other matters, will reconvene within the next week for a final decision on fall sports competi-
tion. During this time the presidents will consult with public health officials in their respective areas and determine what is the best decision with respect to our student-athletes and the potential for them to practice and compete safely. The Board of Directors decision on continuing discussions was built around Conference Carolinas’ commitment to the development and formation of the whole person in body, mind and soul. Conference Carolinas and its member institutions believe that intercollegiate athletics prepares students to lead lives of integrity,
succeed professionally and become responsible citizens. The ability to compete in intercollegiate athletics is vital to the holistic education of all student-athletes and is central to the missions of all institutions in Conference Carolinas. Therefore, a decision to potentially postpone intercollegiate athletics competition is one that will not be made lightly and will only be made after exhausting all possible avenues for a safe resumption of intercollegiate athletics competition. “The agreement by the Board of Directors to delay making a decision on fall sports intercollegiate athlet-

there is a reasonable and safe path forward for intercollegiate athletics this fall.” Belmont Abbey is a member of Conference Carolinas.
Average Joe Gamer By: Shelton Fisher I saw a post recently on the internet that read, “Real men don’t have Xboxes; they have toolboxes”. The post of course had mixed reviews from groups of people both young and old, all staking their claims as to how one generation is lazier than the other but the other is “too old” to understand. The truth of the matter is that we live in a digital age. The American dream has shifted from getting paid to build houses to live in, to building 8-bit fortresses in front for the masses on streaming websites as a living. What if I were to tell you that there are still people of the younger generation out there that hold on tightly to the handles of their toolboxes? After a long day of work, their rough and callused hands grab their gaming headset and controller to escape the troubles of the world for a while. I like to call this type of person, the “Average Joe Gamer”. Growing up as a gamer came with its own set of pros and cons. There were few disadvantages such as leverage with punishments and things of that nature. My parents were worried at times that I would spend too much time “on that game”. I remember many Saturday mornings where my father had begun a project and I would hear, “Get off of that and go help your daddy!”. It was like passing an act of Congress to get me up to work but I would go help, and in the end, I became better for the experience. The advantage looking in retrospect being that I was fortunate enough to watch the technology evolve into the immense world it is today; the sky truly was the limit and there was nowhere else to go but up. Video games were treated as rewards in my household, as well as presents at Christmas and birthdays. Gaming did however teach me one of the most valuable lessons a kid can learn while growing up… How to earn an honest dollar. When you grow up in the south and have
older neighbors, typically they don’t want to do their own yard work. They may work in their flowerbeds, but cutting grass is prime work for a Shelton Fisher preteen. I would cut my neighbor’s yards through many summers in the village, and not to mention helping Earl Painter: Handy Man Extraordinaire on his bigger jobs out in the Charlotte area. From painting to pruning, I did just about anything I was able to until I got my first real job at Brightstar Grill (that’s another story for another time) but my point is that although I may not have had the latest and greatest consoles as soon as they came out on the market, what I did have was earned with the sweat from my brow. Fast forward to age twenty-seven and I am still working for my right to play. The gaming world has far from slowed its progress. It like every day there is a new toy or modification being made to innovate the way that games are played. For instance, Xbox has announced that they are going to become mobile compatible which will allow players to connect their cell phones to their controllers and play their games anywhere. Sure things get busy on my days off, with repairs around the house and essentials to take care of, but let’s not forget about the importance of self-care. Just as men in the days of old kicked back in their LaZ-Boy recliners with the game or a wrestling match and a cold one, consider this simply a generational adaptation. What makes one more rigid than lack or relaxation? I have never been the type to go out into the nightlife. I much prefer plundering schooners off the coast of the Caribbean, defending myself from a horde of zombies in the apocalypse, or simply gobbling up as many crunchy yellow dots as I can before those little ghosts get me. I’m Shelton Fisher, gaming representative for the working man.

SCHOOL From Page 1 To help everyone become acquainted with the “new normal” Gaston Schools has issued the following information- ‘5 Things to Know’ as a new academic year begins. Number 1: Blended model for teaching and learning Teachers, school administrators, and other personnel are committed to providing quality teaching and learning for students. Gaston County Schools will operate under the state reopening plan referred to as “Plan B,” which is a blended model of in-person instruction at school and remote learning at home. Students whose last name begins with A-K (referred to as Group A) will attend school on Monday and Tuesday and engage in remote learning on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Students whose last name begins with L-Z (referred to as Group B) will engage in remote learning on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and attend school on Thursday and Friday. All students will be involved in remote learning on Wednesday (no students
at school). This allows for “deep cleaning” between Group A and Group B attending school for the week and gives staff time for planning and professional development. Number 2: Technology and learning at home Parents with concerns about sending their child(ren) to school for in-person instruction had the opportunity to enroll in the Gaston County Virtual Academy, the school district’s online school that is beginning its fourth year. The students will engage in full remote learning five days a week and be taught by local, certified teachers who are employed by Gaston County Schools. More than 7,000 students chose to attend the Virtual Academy – this represents about 23 percent of the school district’s total student population based on 31,000 students. To support remote learning at home, the district is making a Chromebook computer available to every student. The district has installed outdoor WiFi access points at high schools to aid in providing Internet access for families. Technicians are working now on installing outdoor WiFi access points at middle schools and elementary schools.

Number 3: Health screenings and temperature checks When arriving at school each day, students and staff will participate in a temperature check and health screening. The health screening form includes questions about COVID-19 symptoms, exposure, and diagnosis. Students and staff will be required to wear a mask/face covering while at school. Each student and staff member will receive five face masks that are washable and reusable. Number 4: Inside the school The school classroom will look different for students. Desks and other furniture have been placed six feet apart; signs about social distancing, handwashing, masks/face coverings, good hygiene, etc. have been placed throughout the building; and floor markings are in place to guide the flow of students/staff as they move through the building. The classroom also becomes the place where students will eat their breakfast and lunch meals. On days when students are at home for remote learning, a meal can be picked up at their school through the district’s “grab and go” nutrition program. Number 5: School buses There are 211 buses in the Gaston County Schools fleet.
Social distancing is required on school buses, which means the number of students allowed to ride the bus at one time will be limited. A standard-size bus will be able to transport 20-24 students (depending on the number of seats) at one time. A temperature check/ health screening will be conducted when students board the school bus in the morning. The health screening form includes questions about COVID-19 symptoms, exposure, and diagnosis. Parents are encouraged to accompany their child(ren) to the bus stop to aid in the health screening process. Buses will be used first to pick up elementary school students. Buses start rolling at 6:15 a.m. to complete the elementary school routes. Elementary schools begin at 7:30 a.m. (unless otherwise noted). Once elementary school routes are complete, buses will be used to pick up students for middle schools and high schools, which begin classes at 8:30 a.m. (unless otherwise noted). In the afternoons, elementary schools dismiss at 2:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted), and middle schools and high schools dismiss at 3:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted). Buses will be cleaned/ disinfected between routes. Parents will receive information from their child’s school about bus routes, pick-up and drop-off times, etc.

What to expect: Gaston County School parents and employees Dear Parents and Employees: As a new academic year begins, we realize that you may have questions about what will happen if there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 at your child’s school. This letter provides you with information about the process that a school will follow. Protocol when there is a confirmed case at school The following information outlines the steps that a school will follow when there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 at a school: School officials will work closely with the Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services and follow guidance and procedures outlined by state and local public health officials. Our local health department will handle the contact tracing process in a confidential manner and collaborate with the school on how to address the situation. School administrators are committed to being factual and timely in their efforts to provide pertinent information to you. The Parentlink communication system will be used to notify parents and employees by telephone and e-mail. This is why it is important for you to have a current telephone number and e-mail address on file with the school. In the event of an outbreak, it may be necessary for a school to shift to full remote learning for a certain period of time. Be mindful that a change to full remote learning may have to be done quickly with less than a day’s notice. Because of our obligation to protect the privacy of students and employees as required by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) federal laws, the school cannot release specific information about a confirmed case. The names of the people affected and other personally identifiable information will be provided to public health officials in accordance with reporting requirements; however, this information will not be released to the public or the media. Students, employees, parents, and others should refrain from sharing inaccurate information. Please do not spread rumors as this may create panic, anxiety, and mistrust for your child’s school family. Protocol when a student/ employee exhibits symptoms The following information outlines the steps that a school will follow when a student or employee exhibits COVID-19 symptoms while at school: If the person is an em-
ployee, he or she will be sent home immediately. If the person is a student, a parent will be contacted and asked to pick up the student immediately. Parents/employees will be advised to contact their healthcare professional or the local health department for further guidance on general questions about COVID-19 and information about testing. A face covering will be given to the person if he or she does not have one. If the person is a student, he or she will be taken to a designated room or office for isolation from others until being picked up by a parent/guardian. The student will be supervised by a staff member who maintains at least six feet of space and wears personal protective equipment (PPE). Areas where the student or employee may have been will be closed off and cleaned/disinfected properly. The person designated as the school’s COVID-19 coordinator will notify Gaston County Schools Health Services of the incident. Health Services will contact the local health department to determine next steps and a plan of action. Good hygiene practices to remember We would like for you to review the following hygiene practices and do your part to help limit the spread of the coronavirus. It is a good idea to review these practices with your child and others in your family. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer; Keep your social distance (at least six feet of space) from others; Wear a mask/face covering when in public; Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing; Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; Clean touch points, surfaces, and other high-contact areas regularly; and Stay at home if you are not feeling well. If you are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, please contact your healthcare professional. Thank you for your continued support of your child’s school. The safety of everyone associated with our school community is extremely important, and our hope is that all of us can work together to support each other as we face this global pandemic. Sincerely, W. Jeffery Booker, Ed.D. Superintendent Gaston County Schools Steve Eaton, MPH Public Health Director Gaston County Dept of Health and Human Services

NCHSAA announces amended sports calendar NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker issued the following statement last week regarding the amended 20202021 Sport Calendar. “You all have been waiting patiently for a decision from the NCHSAA relative to an amended sport calendar for the 2020-2021 academic year. Please keep in mind that these proposed dates are dependent on COVID-19 conditions improving across NC. However, last night the Board of Directors approved a framework we believe maximizes the opportunities for students in our membership to participate in athletics at some point during this school year, regardless of what plan is a school and/or school system operates. The NCHSAA Board approved an amended calendar
for the 2020-2021 school year in a special called meeting for this purpose on Tuesday, August 11 via Zoom. This calendar represents the hard work of the NCHSAA Staff, Board

of Directors and various committees such as the City/ County Athletic Directors, Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and the Sports Ad Hoc Committee. There is still much work to be done on the details of implementing athletic programs and contests during this pandemic, but we thank these committees and individuals for their hard work to bring us to this point. We recognize that this is a lot of information to digest and drastically different from the way the sport calendar has been aligned for years in North Carolina. However, as we mentioned many weeks ago, “We will play again.” In that mantra we believe, and it
is in that spirit that we present this calendar. It is the belief of the Board of Directors and our staff that this calendar provides us the greatest chance of providing interscholastic athletic opportunities to the students of the NCHSAA for the 2020-2021 academic year. We believe that this is the best path forward to a safe return to the field. Our decision-making process has been careful and

calculated, as we work to ensure the health and safety of all student-athletes, coaches and administrators during this unprecedented time. There is still much work to be done in regard to playoff formats, COVID-19 related rules modifications for numerous sports, securing potential playoff facilities and providing the safest possible regular season opportunities for student athletes. We are committed to that work and will continue to lead and govern interscholastic athletic programs across this state that support and enrich the educational experience provided by our member schools in such a manner to maintain the standards of excellence that the NCHSAA has become known for.”
