Plans for new Belmont Parks and Recreation facility making progress By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

The dream of a new parks and rec. facility for Belmont is slowly but surely coming closer to being a reality. Belmont is the only town in our area without its own parks and rec. building where things like basketball games can be held. What currently serves the city as a parks and rec. place is the decades old J. Paul Ford Center on Woodrow Ave., but the city’s needs have far outgrown that one medium sized building.

On September1, Belmont’s Parks and Rec. director Zip Stowe gave a presentation outlining the plans for a new and grand building to be located on Catawba Street between Kevin Lofitn Rocvwerfoprmt Park and the soon to be opened new City Hall are located. “The response to the presentation was great,” Stowe said. The planned new building will be two stories high and have 45,000 sq. ft. of space. The first floor will feature three basketball courts, a

Belmont’s own ‘Catawba Catfish’ passes away By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

One of Belmont’s most interesting individuals, Reg “Moon” Huffstetler aka the “Catawba Catfish”, passed away on Sept. 6. Huffstetler left a legacy of incredible aquatic accomplishments. Huffstetler’s list of swimming records are as long as Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps’ arms. Huffstetler got his swimming start in local water holes. “When I was a kid I used to dam up creeks and that plus Suttle’s swimming pool on Wilkinson Blvd. is where I learned to swim.” Huffstetler once said. Huffstetler grew up on Central Avenue near where the old Belmont city swimming pool was located. It was there as a 14-year-old that the

urge to swim competitively first entered his mind. The story goes that he could beat two college age swimmers that also used the pool The Belmont pool is also where Huffstetler got the idea to engage in long distance swimming. He honed that skill by swimming the length of the pool up to 50 times without stopping. He would swim at the pool all day and half the night. Huffstetler’s first “official” long distance swim was in the Catawba River when he was 21-years-old. For that event he jumped in the river at the Buster Boyd Bridge and stroked upstream to the bridge at Wilkinson Blvd. In Belmont- a distance of 15 miles. It took him just over nineteen hours to make the swim. A man in a rowboat with a See CATFISH, Page 7

media room for gaming, an exercise studio, a kitchen, a kids play area, and a large lobby. The second floor will feature a walking track, an exercise room, a catering kitchen, a lounge, and more play space. The second floor will also feature a balcony with sweeping views of the Catawba River and Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park. Just a few of the activities the new center can host includes pickle ball, gymnastics, cheerleading, karate, See PARKS, Page 4

Gaston County Schools teacher Brian Johnson knows that things don’t always go the way you might originally plan. The East Gaston High School biology teacher, who says he is “on loan” to the Gaston Virtual Academy this year, is the recipient of the 2020 DENny Award, which recognizes his efforts in community work. The Discovery Education Network presents the DENny Award to educators who actively involve students in activities that contribute to the growth of community through effective teaching and learning. The recognition came after Johnson, who has served as the student council adviser at East Gaston, had to find a new way to organize the school’s Spring for Charity Fun Run. The student council had been organizing and par-

My Opinion:

Letter to the Editor... Dear Editor:

Where we live Why I say all that? Because I want to remind you all who dwell in this neck of the woods how lucky Alan Hodge we are to be here. Banner-News Editor Sure enuff.. there are plenty of ridnicks and idiots to go around. Quite a few in too close a proximity to me. But, overall we have it made. Traffic is more or less tolerable, most people are cordial, for many folks there is still a strong bond to the historical heritage that our ancestors laid down. There is also a vibe for the future- I see this every day when I step outside my office onto the Main St. sidewalk in swingin’ downtown Belmont and witness the mommies and sometimes the mommy/ daddy combinations pushing the fruit of their loom along in a baby cart. In this day and time people rush around and come and go and change dwelling locations faster than weevils skittering around on a tin plate held over an open fire. I think it’s simply a desire to find a peaceful place to settle, work, raise a family if that’s their thing. For those who have called this end of Gaston County home for generations as I have, be thankful, never lose sight of your forbears and how they carved civilization with a shovel and axe. For you newcomers, welcome to a place where your new roots have a rich ground to grow deep, now and for decades to come.

The art of giving political speeches I was talking to a friend not long ago who was pretty down on politics in all its forms. “I actually find real enjoyment in politics, I told him. He asked if I was nuts. No, I said, there’s a lot of pleasure—even joy—to be found in participating. Case in point: getting the chance to listen to gifted speakers. For many years, I was fortunate to have a seat on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, which gave me a chance to observe some of the best orators in the nation. For instance, there was Hale Boggs from Louisiana, who was in many ways like an actor; you could listen and relax in the knowledge that you were in the hands of a master. And Carl Albert, from Oklahoma, never referred to notes; he could speak knowledgeably and cogently on any legislation. When John Lewis, the Georgia congressman and civil rights icon, took the floor, people stopped whatever they were doing to listen. He had a gift for ele-

vating any particular issue to a higher plane that called on people to remember the best in their nation and in themselves. Republican John Anderson of Illinois took a different approach. He wasn’t so much an orator as a superb debater, and had a great fondness for verbal give and take. So did John McCormack from Massachusetts, House Speaker during the 1960s. Very quick on the draw, he would turn to his adversary in debate and say something like, “I hold the gentleman in minimum high regard, to the amusement of everyone around. He loved being in the fray. Edith Green, from Oregon, had been a schoolteacher before coming to Congress, and she carried those skills with her to the House. In a sense, she made the House her classroom, and when she had the mic, she was engaging but firm as she battled to advance women’s issues and social reform. Mo Udall of Arizona took a different approach: He believed you should have a good time while you partici-

But the chance to watch great communicators at work gives you a better sense of who they are, why they have succeeded, and why our multi-faceted political system is so interesting, engaging, and important. For 65 years, Holy Angels has put its residents, their needs and their safety at the forefront. That is true now more than ever. Founded in 1955, Holy Angels has grown from serving a single resident to now serving more than 80 children and adults. We provide compassionate, dependable care and opportunities to those with intellectual developmental disabilities and delicate medical conditions through physical, social, spiritual, educational, vocational and emotional support. We are a place of loving, living and learning. Our primary purpose is to serve the differently able – to extend the safest environment possible that fosters loving and compassionate care. This stretches from our main campus on Wilkinson Boulevard to The Spruced Goose Station, Cherubs CafÊ, Cotton Candy Factory, Bliss Gallery, Camp Hope and our group homes, one of which is located at Camp Hope. Per our vision, we believe in the possibility that lies within each individual, regardless of physical and mental ability, and that all have the right to the highest quality of life. That is, and will forever be, our purpose and our primary focus: extending the highest quality of life. We take this opportunity to submit this letter in response to a recent issue that has become a challenge to our organization and to our beloved Camp Hope. It’s a special place where our residents enjoy boat rides, fishing, hiking, handicapped accessible nature trails, camp experiences, and the opportunity to simply enjoy the beauty of nature -- all in a safe and secure environment that has been developed and created through the support of benefactors and volunteers, Last year, we received a request from an adjacent property owner seeking access to our privately owned and maintained road at Camp Hope, our Lake Wylie property featuring recreational activities and a group home for our differently able residents.

Holy Angels purchased its Camp Hope property in 1992. This land was not donated to us. Camp Hope is truly a special place that provides priceless outdoor experiences and opportunities to our residents, their families, our staff and our volunteers. The adjacent property owner sought usage of our Camp Hope private access road, River Run Road off South Point Road. The commercial venue is being advertised for events of more than 250 guests that include weddings, family reunions, corporate events, music festivals, parties, and food and wine tasting festivals. Needless to say, the nature of this destination, the types of events and the traffic anticipated were among the many considerations Holy Angels evaluated with respect to this access request. As is the case in all that we do at Holy Angels, our board, our executive leadership and all of our staff must put our residents and their needs first, just as we have done for 65 years. And that means not granting the requested access through our property, which could potentially jeopardize the wellbeing of our residents who enjoy or reside at Camp Hope. Our worries extend to the potential liabilities and risk management that come attached to allow access, such as increased traffic, increased emergency response times due to traffic, road maintenance costs, irresponsible behaviors/ drivers, increased access and trespassing onto Camp Hope. Granting the request also may affect Holy Angels’ future plans. We cannot risk the safe environment for the residents of our group home in this location. We cannot risk the care and security of our differently able. We cannot overlook the great risk of legal liability. We

have assessed the situation in its entirety and the possibility of allowing road usage, and the risk is just too great. Numerous discussions regarding this matter have occurred with Holy Angels leadership and its Board of Directors who voiced these immense concerns for the safety and wellbeing of our residents, including those who reside on the property. After much consideration by Holy Angels – which included feedback from leadership and board members, legal advisors, supporters, some family members of our residents and many members of the community – the decision was made not to grant this access request. We shared this final decision with the adjacent property owner in July with the suggestion to pursue access via Armstrong Road or Lake Mist Drive, which are public roads with direct access to the adjacent property. Unfortunately, our decision has been met with marketing attempts, direct communication and indirect falsehoods about Holy Angels and Camp Hope. We respect the right for the adjacent property owner to use and develop their property and we hope that Holy Angels’ mission, responsibilities, concerns and decisions are similarly respected. We simply must continue our unwavering commitment to our differently able residents and deny the adjacent property owner’s appeal, and we must remain steadfast in this decision. Our residents come first, and they will come first in all of Holy Angels decisions. Thank you. I just got off the phone with my sister Sherry who lives in Altadena, Californi-yay and she told me the harrowing tale of how she and her husband I call “Lil Weezel and their daughter Holly had been ordered by the local “officials to pack a bug-out bag. Why? In case the wildfires raging in that area came too close to their house. As of yesterday, they had been spared flames and cinders but Sherry said there was so much smoke in the air that it blotted out the sun and cars and everything else were covered in downward floating ashes and even inside their house the stench of smoke permeated everything. Last week I talked to a horse riding instructor German girl at Shining Hope Farms near Stanley. She told me she had lived in a lot of places since leaving Deutschland and our area was the best yet. Sometimes I think about my half-brother Wally who has called Manhattan, New York City, home for a long time. Poor Wally. During my “middle period of life- 19591985, I lived in the Queen City. OMG what a place. I have scant few memories of that metropolis that are pleasant. Thanks be to God I never totally lost my Belmont/Mt. Holly/Catawba Heights recollections and connections and when Fate led me back here to the western shore of the Catawba and placed a person named Sharon in my life, well, I reckon I would have ended up in the Po House or the Nut House or the Gaolhause or simply put..the gutter where many a writer has found themselves.

Stowe sees the new parks and rec. center not only as a boon to the local activities scene, but as an economic driver as well. “The center will be a place we can hold events such as basketball tournaments and invite as many as fifty teams,” he said. ‘This will bring people to Belmont who will shop, stay in local hotels, and eat in local restaurants. It will be a big boost economically.” The next step in making the new center a reality will be a zoning hearing on September 17. The plans will be presented to the Belmont city council on October 5. “If everything is approved we could start construction in May 2021,” said Stowe. “It will take about 14 months to build.” Stowe says the idea is to use use local builders for the project, further helping the

This has been a bizarre year to say the least. It appears so much has changed in such a short time span, and it makes many wonder if we will ever fully return to the sense of “normalcy” that we once knew. Lately I have been reminded of a song that my choir and I sang both in high school and during the time I spent in college before realized I needed something more than a music degree could offer. The words beckon, “let us pause in life’s pleasures and count its many tears, while we all sup sorrow with the poor. There’s a song that will linger forever in our ears, oh hard times come again no more. Tis the song… The sigh of the weary hard times, hard times, come again no more. Many days you have lingered around my cabin door, oh hard times come again no more.” There have been so many ups, downs, twists, turns, and new ways to play the game in America, so with any free time I seem to find lately, I try to keep my hands from sitting idle. There is always something to do around my house whether it’s cutting the grass, chopping down pin oaks, picking figs atop the roof of my garage, washing clothes, writing, or any number of other projects I manage to find along the way. I recently discovered something however that was so simple… so relaxing and enjoyable, and for whatever reason I can’t put my finger on the reason why. Perhaps it was the weather, or the temperature of my drink was just right, but whatever the case may be it made things stop and the world seemed like a better place for a while. Several days ago, I cut down a very narrow pin oak tree; so narrow in fact, that you could wrap your entire hand around it. Without realizing it, I had cut it at waist height and had done this with several other pieces of wood as well. I got to thinking about it and decided to save several of these cuts and try my hand at crafting a few walking sticks, just to have something I can say that I hand-carved. I took the cuts into my workshop and there

they sat, until I worked on a weed eater that I picked up at the dump a month ago. I had just replaced the fuel lines, fuel filter, and primer bulb Shelton Fisher only to find that it still wasn’t enough to get it running. It felt as though I wasted the afternoon until I remembered the pin oak. I wanted to try and get the bark off it as quickly as I could, so I plugged in my grandfather’s old grinder and let it do some of the work. The building soon began to smell of fall weather and bonfires as dust began to fly from the wood but as I would gradually check it, I noticed that bark wasn’t coming off in the way I had hoped. It was only becoming smooth. Then it dawned on me… I could always whittle it down. I had seen Jed Clampett and Andy Taylor do it on television plenty of times when I was growing up, but I never thought of whittling as something that people actually do. I took out my Kobalt pocketknife and looked it over. I figured it was worth a shot. I held the wood in my hands and with the blade in my right hand, I laid it at an angle. With one smooth stroke, it slid along and cascaded a peeling of bark onto the floor as if it were a piece of ribbon being curled for the end of a balloon. I couldn’t believe how easily the knife was able to cut into the bark. I decided to then move from the workshop to the front porch to enjoy the nice weather. Alan sent me a link to some music by an old blues singer by the name of Son House, and it seems as though whittling in my rocking chair on the front porch to the blues with my dogs lying next to me, enjoying a gentle breeze made for a trifecta of a great evening. So, the next time these hard times come lingering around your cabin door, maybe grab you a nicely sized stick and a pocketknife. There’s a rocking chair somewhere with your name on it.

Participants conducted their own run or walk, logged it on the computer, and asked for sponsors. While those involved could not gather in person, they were able to communicate with each other through the online race platform. “We just had a really good group of students,” he said. “They were great at organizing things, and they were very active in staying positive,” said Johnson. “They were just happy the run was happening in some way.” The students’ efforts resulted in being able to give to local food banks in Stanley and Mount Holly. Shortly after that, he got a text from a friend, asking if he had received anything from Discovery Education. That is how he found out he had been nominated for the award by another teacher at East Gaston, which he says is the best honor of all. “The biggest reason that it meant so much to me was that I didn’t know I had been nominated,” he said. “A colleague saw something I did and was appreciative enough that he took the time and effort to nominate me. I didn’t even know I was getting the award.” Johnson is originally from Ohio, but loves calling North Carolina home. He started

CATFISH From Page 1 flashlight guided him in the dark. When he got to the Wilkinson bridge a thousand people were waiting. a car with a model on the parade lap. Huffstetler’s swimming took him to places such as Canada, Holland, England, and France. In 1970 he tried to swim the English Channel from Cape Griz, France to Dover, England and was on a record-setting pace until a squall made the water too rough. In 1989, Huffstetler received an award for swimming the length and breadth of Lake Norman. He’s also a member of the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame.

RSVP By Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org

People like to be invited to events. Whether it is a get together with friends, a wedding, or a party, we like to be included. Being invited can make you feel loved and important to others. No one wants to be left out of an event everyone else is attending. People certainly do not want to miss out on a good time of food and fellowship. More importantly than missing out on a party, or a wedding, is the sorrow of missing out on God. Luke 14:12-24 records the Parable of the Great Banquet. Jesus had been invited to a dinner on the Sabbath Day by one of the Pharisees. While there, Jesus told those gathered about a man who was going to have a dinner party. He sent his servant to invite all of his friends and acquaintances. One by one they made excuses why they could not attend. When the man heard that none of the people he invited would attend, he became angry. He sent his servant into the city to invite the poor, lame, and disabled. His servant told him they still needed more people in order to fill the house with guests. He sent his servant into the highways, inviting everyone. The man of the house told his servant that none of those

originally invited, who had rejected, would taste his supper. In this parable, the man throwing the dinner is God. The dinner at the house is the kingdom of Rev. Trent Tankin God. Everyone invited to the dinner, is every single person today. Sadly, many people like those invited to this man’s dinner, will reject God’s invitation. They will find every excuse available to reject Jesus. In doing so, ultimately, they will miss an eternity in heaven with God. Like those who cast aside an invitation to a party, too many people will cast aside their invitation, the Bible. The servant in this parable represents you and me. The servant was sent to invite everyone he encountered to come to the dinner. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are to go out into our cities and highways, inviting people to Jesus. Just as the man having the dinner could not expect people just to show up to his dinner, we cannot expect people to just come to Jesus. People all over our communities are waiting for their invitation to Jesus from us. God is going to have an awesome gathering in heaven one day, and we all have been invited. Will you RSVP? Will you invite someone?

When I was treading water I went into another dimension,” he once said. “It was like going into outer space.” Some of the water treading stints went for 100 hours, including one staged at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1991 when a special pool was constructed at turn four near the racetrack. After Huffstetler hit the 100-hour mark, track owner Humpy Wheeler gave him a big trophy, a check for $1,000, and he got to ride in

NC Gov. Cooper and Cohen meet with Dr. Birx NC Governor Cooper and DHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen met with Dr. Deborah Birx in North Carolina last week. The Governor and Dr. Birx also participated together in the call with the White House Coronavirus Task Force, and the Governor spoke about the need for our elected leaders and candidates to lead by example on the campaign trail this fall by holding events with face cov-

erings and social distancing. In their meeting with Dr. Birx, the Governor and Secretary Cohen noted their appreciation for the opportunity to share how North Carolina has been responding to COVID-19 and how the state’s approach to slowly ease measures has helped distinguish it from others in the South who have faced greater setbacks. They discussed North Carolina’s

multi-prong approach, which includes slowing the spread through prevention, knowing who has been exposed to COVID-19 through testing and tracing, and supporting people staying home when needed through isolation and quarantine supports. Secretary Cohen and Governor Cooper also addressed the state’s efforts to protect people’s health in congregate care settings, such

County reopens facilities As the state of North Carolina moves into Phase 2.5 of COVID 19 protocols, Gaston County announces it has reopened the outdoor fitness pavilion at Dallas Park and all playgrounds at County parks. The County, thanks to the hard work of its Parks and Recreation staff, kept its parks open and maintained throughout COVID-19. Today’s move allows for playground equipment to be used by the public once again. In addition, the Gaston County Museum reopened on Sept. 15, and will be open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the past several months, museum staff has been working to making the museum experience safe for visitors during COVID-19, along with preparing a brand-new exhibit. Visitors to the museum will be required to wear masks, and the museum has placed signage that will help

keep guests safely distanced, along with the use of timed reservations to limit the total number of guests inside the museum at any one time. More information on reservations and new guidelines for enjoying the museum can be found at GastonCountyMuseum.org. Also reopening is Gaston County’s Senior Center. Though the GCSC has been conducted social-distanced classes outside and virtually during the past several weeks, it re-opened the indoor wellness room and restarted classes by appointment only on Tuesday, September 8. The facility will meet or exceed all requirements set out by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. The GCSC will take one-hour appointments for the wellness room and will close for a 15-minute cleaning between each appointment. The classes currently meet-

ing outside will be moved back indoors, but capped at a maximum of 20 people per class to allow for continued social distancing. An hour for deep cleaning will be the minimum standard between each class that meets indoors. Those who wish to utilize the GCSC will have their temperatures checked before being allowed to enter the facility. Anyone with temperatures higher than 100.4 degrees will not be permitted to enter. Each person entering the building will also have to answer three questions as part of a health screening questionnaire – the same process used by County staff on a daily basis. Masks will be mandatory for entry and exit of the building and for any time a person is not engaged in exercise. To make an appointment to use the wellness room, the computer room, library or to sign up for a class, call (704) 922-2170.

The Reid Ancestral Home, located at 301 Sacco Street, Belmont, NC, and built in 1920 by the late Professor Charles Jesse Bynum Reid and his wife, Mrs. Maude Herndon Reid, will mark 100 years of existence on Sunday, September 20 at 3:00 pm. Professor Reid was the founding principal of what would come to be Reid High School. The school existed from 1918 to 1966. Gaston’s graduation rate increases to 88 percent Gaston County Schools’ graduation rate for the Class of 2020 is 88 percent, according to information released on September 2 by the North Carolina State Board of Education. The rate of 88 percent is 3.1 points higher than last year. This year, all 11 high schools achieved a graduation rate that exceeds 80 percent, and seven schools – Ashbrook, Cherryville, Stuart W. Cramer, Forestview, Gaston Early College, Highland, and South Point – have a rate that is higher than 90 percent. For the second year in a row, the Gaston Early College High School and Highland School of Technology earned a perfect graduation rate of 100 percent. “We are very pleased to see an increase in our graduation rate, and we applaud

our schools for their efforts to ensure that students graduate from high school and receive their diploma, stated Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker. “The graduation rate is an important factor that measures student success, and we are proud to see our schools making progress in this area. Compared to last year, Hunter Huss (+5.0), Stuart W. Cramer (+4.3), Bessemer City (+4.1), Ashbrook (+3.7), and East Gaston (+3.1) had the most substantial gains. Three schools have experienced a steady and significant increase in graduation rates over a three-year period: Hunter Huss (+7.6), North Gaston (+4.8), and South Point (+3.0). Called the four-year cohort graduation rate, it reflects the percentage of students who

entered the ninth grade in 2016-2017 and graduated four years later in June 2020. When the state first calculated the four-year cohort graduation rate in 2005-2006, Gaston County’s rate was a mere 68.1 percent. In 2017-2018, the state changed how the graduation rate is calculated, which resulted in lower rates for schools. Previously, the rate was based primarily on the initial number of ninth grade students who created the cohort. Students who enrolled in a school, but were not part of the school’s initial cohort, were included in the calculation only if they were on schedule to graduate in four years. Now, all students, regardless of circumstances, are included in a school’s cohort. Dr. Booker added, “Prior to the state changing the way

it calculates the graduation rate, Gaston County Schools recorded its highest graduation rate ever of 88.3 percent. When the state made the changes, many school districts saw a drop in the graduation rate. So, it is encouraging to see this year’s rate of 88.0 percent – which is determined by using the calculation practices that were put into place in 2017-2018 – getting close to our all-time high of 88.3 percent. Still, our goal is for every school to have a graduation rate of 100 percent, and we want to continue our progress toward seeing that happen. It is important to note that the four-year graduation rate is not the same as the dropout rate, which indicates the number of students who drop out

of high school in a given year. Below are graduation rate highlights for the Class of 2020 This year’s graduation rate for Gaston County Schools is 88.0 percent. The Class of 2020 included 2,214 graduates. The rate of 88.0 percent is an increase of 3.1 points when compared to last year’s rate of 84.9 percent. Gaston County’s rate of 88.0 percent is higher the statewide rate of 87.6 percent. The graduation rate exceeds 80 percent for all 11 high schools, and the rate exceeds 90 percent for seven schools (Ashbrook, Cherryville, Stuart W. Cramer, Forestview, Gaston Early College, Highland, and South Point). The Gaston Early College High School and Highland School of Technology

achieved a perfect graduation rate of 100 percent. The two schools also had a 100 percent graduation rate last year. The most significant increases in the graduation rate when compared to last year are Hunter Huss (+5.0), Stuart W. Cramer (+4.3), Bessemer City (+4.1), Ashbrook (+3.7), and East Gaston (+3.1). Three schools have experienced a steady and significant increase in graduation rates over a three-year period: Hunter Huss (+7.6), North Gaston (+4.8), and South Point (+3.0). In 2017-2018, the state changed the way it calculates the graduation rate. Therefore, the graduation rates for the Classes of 2018, 2019, and 2020 are not necessarily comparable to the years prior to 2017-2018.
