Bishop Peter J. Jugis cuts the ribbon at St. Joseph College Seminary.

St. Joseph College Seminary College holds grand opening By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Tuesday, September 15 saw the official opening of the Catholic Diocese of Charlotte’s St. Joseph College Seminary near Mt. Holly. Bishop Peter J. Jugis cut the ribbon for the 30,000 sq. ft. facility which is located on 86 acres just off Perfection Ave. The school will be home to 40 young men who are exploring a vocation to the Catholic priesthood while

Belmont Fire Dept. gets brand new fire truck By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

After many months of planning and building, the Belmont Fire Department has taken delivery of a much needed new fire truck. The 2020 Smeal brand machine was custom built for Belmont in Nebraska. It arrived in Belmont last week and will be assigned either to the Keener Blvd. or the station on South Point Rd. Belmont FD division captain Craig Austin led the committee that determined how the truck would be configured and equipped. Cost of the truck was around $600,000. It took a year to build. “It should be ready for use in a couple of weeks,” Austin said. “We

still have some more equipment that’s coming for installation.” The truck weighs 44,000 pounds and is just over 32 feet long. It replaces a truck that dates to 2008 That truck will be kept at the Keener Blvd. Station as a spare. The new truck has an amazing array of safety and firefighting devices. LED spotlights all around the truck can light up a night time scene bright as day. The cab has airbags for firefighter safety. It also has air conditioning. The new truck has small “blind spot” cameras on the outside that show the driver what’s near the truck. See FIRE TRUCK, Page 3

Veteran’s program launched at Shining Hope Farms By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

When U.S. Navy veteran Michael Frazier, 51, climbs on Lewis the horse at Shining Hope Farms near Stanley, he’s all smiles and his worries fade away. That’s because Frazier is one of a group of veterans taking part in Shining Hope Farm’s new “Saddles and Salutes” therapeutic riding program. “I was looking for therapy to manage my stress and anxiety,” Frazier said. “I learned about Shining Hope Farms through my church, Stonebridge Church Community.” Frazier has been coming to Shining Hope Farms each week since the start of the year. “It’s something I look forward to,” he said. “It really calms me down.” On his most recent therapy session, Frazier and See SHINING HOPE, Page 4

TODAY’S QUOTE:

OPINION

“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” - Oscar Wilde

My Opinion:

I thought I was MacGyver when the cell phone went dead

School cafeteria capers The other day I was riding through East Belmont and as I drove past where the elementary school once stood was hit with a wave of nostalgia. What? You did not know there was once a school where Park St. UMC now stands? Yazzah there shore was. It was a red brick edifice to education that was torn down about 50 years ago and the bricks dumped in the river and the rubble filled in with river silt and the peninsula that is currently the boat ramp at Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park was formed. You can still see some of the bricks poking out around the edges of the pavement. I went to school in 1st grade at East Belmont. The little brick building that still stands beside the church was the lunchroom. We got cold milk every day in bottles with little tin foil caps. A school cafeteria is a special place. The ladies that work there are hairnet wearing heroines. They dish up the vittles and clean up the mess. Some of the foods I consumed in school still stick in my mind. Back then, some stuck in my craw. My favorite foods were fish sticks and baked spaghetti with a pavement of cheese on top. In third grade at Midwood Elementary in Charlotte I saw my first black olive. I did not know whether to eat it or throw it. My very favorite was sheet cake. You know, yellow cake with chocolate icing made in big rectangular pans? Probably the worst cafeteria food I ever faced was collard greens. In fifth grade at Shamrock Gardens Elementary, also in Charlotte, we had a teacher named Miss Rollins. She made us eat everything on our tray. One boy, whose name escapes me, hated greens as much if not more than I did. One fine day we had greens. He drank about half the milk in his carton and then slyly poked his greens down in the milk. Hi ho! Miss Rollins was watching the entire operation out of the corner of her beady eyes. After the boy finished his mischief, she made him extract the milk dripping greens and

eat them in front of everyone at our table. He took about three bites and hurled. Land! How the laughter rang out! Alan Hodge The lunch room at Banner-News Editor Garinger High where I completed my formal education had a jukebox. This was in 1969-1970. I can still hear “Hey Jude” playing on it. It never failed that every now and then someone would drop their tray with a crash. This accident was always accompanied by cheers and applause. I don’t recall much about the Garinger food because I had a couple of pals who would join me in slipping off campus at lunch time. One guy, Marty Edwards, had a 1957 Chevy with mags and cherry bomb mufflers. We would get in Marty’s hot rod and go to the Burger Chef at the corner of Eastway and Shamrock and get burgers and then step across the parking lot to the AG food store and grab a Colt 45 or two and cruise around enjoying the hour. That may sound sinful but we were on the mild side of things as many of our classmates were slipping off into the woods and smoking weed. Yes, folks, hippy-dom had arrived in the Queen City. Several years ago I visited the Gaston County Schools Nutrition Center in Lowell. That’s where the majority of the cafeteria food is prepared for the whole county. It is an amazing operation and industrial in its scale. It is operated with the precision of a military quartermaster division. Stuff like spaghetti sauce is made up in huge stainless steel kettles then bagged and shipped to the schools. The aromas are intoxicating. Parents, when things get back to “normal” why don’t you contact the school where your kids go and see if you can have lunch there. The experience might just bring back a flood of your own cafeteria capers and culinary curiosities.

By Tony Marciano The best two days of boat ownership are the day you buy it and the day you sell it. Wanting to avoid those days, I decided I’d better get a kayak. I purchased an inflatable model. We used it a few years ago then life got in the way and it sat in the box. This summer, we decided to take it onto the water. I use an air pump to inflate it. It has a car adapter on the end that plugs into the jack in the car. In spite of the length of the cord, you had to keep the kayak close to the car to blow it up or it wouldn’t reach the car jack. I had an idea. I had an extra automotive battery in the garage. I charged it up and brought it with us to the lake. The problem was how did I connect the plug adapter to the battery. Although I didn’t have one in my drawer of electrical supplies, I did find two large alligator electrical clips with wire. I had an idea. The plug on the car jack has the silver shaft coming out of the front while having two clips on the side. I assumed the silver shaft was the positive voltage and the side clips were the negative. The battery had screw on terminals. I hooked up the black wire to the negative post. But the positive post had corroded itself such that it was frozen in place. What would I do? The positive post was protected by a red cap. I removed it,

attached the wire and put the red cap back over it. When I turned on the blower to fill up the kayak, it worked. They kayak inflated and my membership card to the MacGyver fan club arrived just in time. After we were done kayaking, my wife and I enjoy sitting on the shore and watching the boats. While we were doing this, my wife was playing on her phone. Several hours later her phone went dead. She mentioned driving home so she could charge it in the car. But I wanted to spend time with her. I told her I had a solution. I brought the automotive battery to the waterfront where we were sitting. I brought the two alligator electrical clips along with the car charger. You know where this is going. I hooked the red clip to the center post of the car charger. The black clip was attached to the side posts. The red wire went to the positive terminal and the black wire went to the negative terminal. It worked. Her phone charged. I had a chance to spend time with my wife. Sometimes we wait for ev-

erything to line up and believe if that Tony Marciano happens, it was surely meant to be. Someone once said to me if a certain thing didn’t happen, maybe it wasn’t the Lord’s will. I responded with, “Maybe it was bad leadership.” He went silent. There is a Clint Eastwood movie where he serves as an aging Marine Drill Instructor, preparing his troops to fight in the Korean War. He is constantly reminding his men that in the real world, not the classroom, but in the real world, they need to learn to adjust and adapt. What is it you are facing? What challenge is lying in front of you? Will you walk away and say it is too hard? Or will you look at what you have in your hands and determine a way to utilize that to move things forward. The choice is yours. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Feed Back ... Anyhoo, we spent almost every weekend of those 16 months trying to find a place to live. We put Charlotte in the center of a circle and drove to different cities and towns each weekend, waiting for one of those towns to say, “Here is where you belong”. My job in Human Resources fell victim to the wonderful (said no one ever) 2009 economy. That free time left me to explore on my own instead of dragging a man who spent way too many hours on windshield time. One day I took a trip to look at homes in a town called Belmont. I drove the hour and 15 minutes up I-85, got off at exit 26

(This email came in response to the “Where We Live” column last week.) In 2006, Greg and I built our forever home in Duncan, SC. In May 2008, his job decided otherwise and he was transferred to the Charlotte center. During that time of the real estate mess, it took 16 months for our forever home to finally be sold. He spent 16 months driving from Duncan, SC near the Greenville Spartanburg Airport to his job near the Charlotte Airport, got in a truck, drove over 600 miles for his run and then came back home again each night. How did we ever survive that?

Take care of everything until I return! By Rev. Trent Rankin

and live carefree. When the master returns, he will punish the wicked servant. In this parable, we see Jesus as the man gone on a trip. Jesus has ascended Rev. Trent Tankin back to heaven. While Jesus is gone, we can either be a good or wicked servant, living for Jesus or not. As the man in the parable returned, so will Jesus one day. Today, many doubt Jesus will return, yet He will return when we least expect it. While we wait, we can either live a life pleasing to God, in His service, or we can live as we believe Jesus will never return. Like the man in the parable, Jesus sees how we are living, and one day He will judge how we lived, good or wicked. What we must ask ourselves, is what if Jesus returned right now! Would Jesus find us living lives that bring honor to God, or will He find us totally unprepared? Much time has passed since Jesus left, yet He is coming back. Jesus said in Matthew 24:42, “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming (NKJV). As we wait, live like Jesus is coming at any time. Truth is, He could very well come at any moment!

Have you ever expected for someone to visit your home? Perhaps it was an out of town family member, and old friend, or even the cable repairman? You probably clean the house thoroughly, have the kids put up all of the toys, and prepare the best you can for the visit. Sometimes, the visitor might delay their coming. They may be an hour late, or even most of the day. After such a delay, often we begin to assume the visitor is not coming, and we start to kick back and relax. When we least expect it, they show up at the door! One day Jesus will return, when we least expect Him! Matthew 24:44-51 records the parable of the good and the wicked servant. Jesus told His disciples that a man left his house one day for an extended trip. Jesus said his wise servant would take care of his master’s house while he was gone, and make sure everything is taken care of. When the master returns, he will reward such a servant. However, a wicked servant will take advantage of his master’s absence, beat the other servants,

SEMINARY From Page 1 form young men to be ready to serve in our parishes when the time comes.” St. Joseph is the only college seminary program between Washington, D.C., and Miami. It has proven so popular since it began in temporary quarters just four years ago that enrollment has tripled, construction had to be accelerated, and donors have already contributed more than $15.5 million toward the $20 million project. With Gothic architecture and brickwork inspired by Belmont Abbey, where in 1876 Benedictine monks planted the roots of Catholicism in western North Carolina, St. Joseph College Seminary includes 40 dorm rooms, a chapel, classroom and library, faculty offices, a dining hall, and a picturesque cloister walk where students go to meditate and pray. “We broke ground on St. Joseph in the middle of a tropical storm two years ago and are opening the doors in the middle of a pandemic – because the work of the Church goes on amid any challenges,” said Father Matthew Kauth, who serves as St. Joseph’s rector. “This is an enduring structure that is both traditional and modern, with beauty and function, that we hope will inspire future generations of Catholics in western North Carolina to continue our mission to share the Gospel.” With a Catholic population that has grown by double digits in the past decade, the diocese launched the college seminary program in 2016 with eight students and now

has 27 in residence, with young men from communities across the diocese including Arden, Boone, Charlotte, Forest City, Gastonia, Huntersville, Lenoir and Salisbury. The college seminary program provides an opportunity for young men to study and discern a possible vocation to the priesthood close to their home. Upon graduation, most will go on to major seminaries elsewhere to pursue graduate degrees in theology and receive more specific training before returning to be ordained as priests for the Charlotte diocese. At Tuesday’s opening ceremony, more than two dozen college seminarians standing at attention six feet apart punctuated their bishop’s remarks by singing the seminary’s Latin fight song, the hymn “Salve Pater,” which salutes St. Joseph as the college’s patron. One of the seminarians, Clement Akerblom, explained what led him to St. Joseph. “Since I was young, I had a desire to give myself to something,” Akerblom said. “I responded to the call and asked God where I should go. He led my family from Sweden to Charlotte. I understood seminary was where I needed to be to get to know Jesus and myself. Officials: do not plant unsolicited seeds from China If you have received an unsolicited packet of seeds from China, do not plant them. In recent weeks, people in Gaston County and across the country have received seed packets in the mail that they never ordered, and officials are concerned that the seeds contain invasive species. Gaston County residents that have received these seed packets are asked to contact the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) immediately to file a report so that NCDA&CS personnel can retrieve the packets. To file a report, residents can call the NCDA&CS at 1-800206-9333 or go online to https://apps.ncagr.gov/AgRSysPortal/SeedReports/UnsolicitedSeed. Once the NCDA&CS has been notified, the seed packets should be dropped off at a local county NC Cooperative Extension Center. Gaston Museum new exhibit The Gaston County Museum, Dallas, has a new exhibit on display entitled The Bible and Gaston County. The exhibit will run September 15 - November 27, 2020 in the Gathering Room Gallery. Religion played an integral role in the history and development of Gaston County. As the textile industry began to shape the county and mill villages were forming, churches became a central gathering point for the community. From the 1940s onward, as mills began to shut down, several churches within those mill communities closed their doors. Despite this, religion has continued to have a strong presence in Gaston County with over 100 active churches in the area today.

The Bibles and documents presented in the exhibit come from the museum’s permanent collection, and on loan from Belmont Abbey College, and St. Helen’s church in Gastonia. The exhibit showcases how the Bible, churches, and the communities surrounding them had a tremendous impact in the development of Gaston County. We invite you to view some of the oldest Bibles in Gaston County, learn about the history of the family Bible, and explore what the Bible represented to the diverse communities of faith. The Bible and Gaston County exhibit will be on view during the hours, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am-5pm. Visit gastoncountymuseum.org/visit to reserve your free tickets.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

Are we really so big? By Dennis Siracusa As we consider our world elephants seem huge, dinosaurs too, and magnificent skyscrapers and huge bridges spanning great distances. Lots of things around us seem disproportionately large and yet others seem very small; stars for instance. Those twinkling lights in the sky are simply tiny dots to our eyes and yet we are captivated by them; a little; but not enough! There are billions of stars in our Milky Way galaxy, and there are billions of other galaxies with billions of stars each. Alpha Centauri is apparently the nearest star to our solar system (4.37 light years away) and it has been noted that if we could transport our best telescope there and look back at earth, we wouldn’t even be able to see earth because, in contrast to the vastness of our galaxy, except for our sun, the rest of our solar system is tiny! Consider stars. Why can we see them with our eyes? Why not travel to one? Well, Mars is only 140 million miles from earth and we recently sent a powerful rocket with a special helicopter there with an anticipated arrival date February 2021. In contrast, if my math is correct, it would take our rocket, travelling the same speed as the one to Mars, one trillion years to get to Alpha Centauri. Wow! Our galaxy is big! But let’s go back to our question; why can we see the stars? Are they reflecting light from our sun or something else like our moon does? It turns out that our solar system is full of objects; some we’ve found but many remain

unknown and our moon is neither a planet nor star, it’s a satellite; a tiny speck of material in the grand scheme of our universe that happens to become illuminated at night by reflecting light from our wonderful, life sustaining sun; and our sun is a star and the only one in our solar system and our sun/star like most of the others we see with our eyes in our galaxy, lights up because of nuclear fusion. To produce that energy each star needs great mass. For instance our sun is 333,000 times as massive as the earth we live on. All of that is huge, isn’t it? Let’s for a second make an amazing contrast. If you bend down and scoop up a handful of dirt and view it with an electron microscope what will you see; billions of unique micro-organisms, invisible to the naked eye, and most with their own unique cell structures. How did this happen; accidentally through evolution or intentionally by the mind and hand of God? Genesis 1 clearly testifies that God created all of creation and He sustains it; all of it large and small, moment by moment. How does He do that and how do we know He does it? Phillip Keller aptly explains in A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23. Our God is triune, three in one, Father, Son, and HS. The Father is the author of all creation, Jesus Christ is the Artisan who created everything, and the Holy Spirit is the agent that presents these truths to our minds and spirits. So, as we take a really good look at everything around us, how is it possible that so many people can ignore God, or possibly think we’re so big?

September is Hunger Action Month. It is a time to call attention to our neighbors in need and take action on the hunger crisis. Before COVID-19, America was home to families facing hunger, and the pandemic has increased those numbers. Those who seek help from our food bank, the largest in the area, may be your family members, your longtime friends, your next door neighbors...some you never knew needed help. Our mission is to address this crisis through nutritional and/or financial assistance, treating each family we encounter with dignity and respect. Most of our food and financial contributions come from individuals; people like you. If you are in a position to give, please know that we appreciate your partnership,

Currently no buyer for the old Dallas Jail building by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor Cherryville Eagle michael@cfmedia.info

Want to own a piece of the past? Here’s your chance as the old Dallas Jail is up for sale. Gaston County Museum Director Jason Luker says there is currently no buyer for the venerable old Dallas Jail, which sits near the court square in Dallas. Its actual location is 108 East Trade Street. The old jail has seen more than its share of history; some good, some bad; and some just weird. As per a media release from the museum, “For the last 30 years, the Gaston County Museum has owned and preserved the historic Gaston County jail located on the Dallas square. “Originally built in 1846 and renovated in 1904 after a fire, the old jail is a(n) historic landmark that has experienced many changes over the years. After the county seat moved to Gastonia, the old jail served as a private residence, a civic club’s headquarters, a western wear store, and a popular local restaurant, among others. “No matter what changed about the building, the community remembered its original purpose and shared extraordinary stories of scandalous deeds and infamous characters.” It continues on, noting, “The goal of the museum has always been to restore the old jail and make it available for visitors. However, over the years it became apparent to us that we would not be able to achieve this goal while also advancing other initiatives intended to serve the community, all the while preserving and collecting its unique history and artistic expressions. In the best interest of preserving the structure and making it accessible for future generations, the Gaston County Museum has decided to partner with Preservation North Carolina to sell the historic jail.” The Eagle got in touch last week with Mr. Luker by email and asked if a buyer had been

Gaston County Museum’s Director Jason Luker. found, to which Mr. Luker replied, “No buyer yet, but there has already been a lot of interest in the building.” The current asking price for the 5,100-plus square foot building and the quarter-acre grounds is $125,000. The jail is, sadly, famous (or infamous) as being the jail that alleged child-killer Caroline Shipp was in prior to her execution in 1892. Said Mr. Luker, “It is a tragic story that has lived on in the memory of our community. The jail also held other infamous inmates, such as John Campo during the 1870s, and also experienced at least two known jail escapes.” He continued, “The old jail is a captivating building that covers over 170 years of history. My greatest hope is to see it continue to be a center of activity on the Dallas Square where it is preserved and open for generations.” As for the museum’s new partners in the possible sale, and in the words of Preservation North Carolina (their new partners), “(We are) a statewide, private, non-profit membership organization that protects and promotes the architectural heritage of North Carolina. “Preservation North Carolina sells all properties with protective covenants and a rehabilitation agreement to ensure that the historic buildings will be renovated and that they will be protected from demolition and unsympathetic changes in the years to come.” Luker hopes that with Preservation North Carolina’s guidance and expertise,

the old jail can experience a revival while still maintaining its historic significance to our county. He noted the organization hopes too this possible sale, “…will also usher in a new chapter for the building and build upon its rich history in the county.” The architectural and historical information on the old jail is interesting enough all by itself. In a ‘blurb’ from Preservation NC, it is noted, “The Dallas Jail is a contributing structure in the Dallas National Register Historic District, and (is) eligible for state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits. “The jail’s unique interior features include barrel-shaped corrugated metal ceilings, interesting markings on the jail walls, and a centered metal spiral staircase. The property would make an interesting themed restaurant, office, retail space or even a residence. As a locally designated landmark, the property’s new buyer is eligible to apply for a 50 percent ad valorem property tax deferral. “The building has a structural engineering report and the current owner is undertaking approximately $19,000 in exterior improvements, including installation of French drains, piping all downspouts away from the foundation, and fabrication and installation of new downspouts. The jail is prime for adaptive reuse and ideal for those looking for an urban feel within the charm of a small southern town. The yard is ample enough for sensitively designed parking. For more information about the sale of the historic Dallas jail, please visit Preservation North Carolina’s website at www.presnc.org, or contact Jason Luker, Director of the Gaston County Museum at Jason.Luker@ gastongov.com. Prospective buyers may also contact Ted Alexander, Regional Director, Preservation NC, Western Office by phone at (704) 482-3531, or email him at talexander@ presnc.org.

The Old Dallas Jail, an historic icon for the community of Dallas, N.C., as well as the county of Gaston, is currently up for sale.

Keep Belmont Beautiful needs volunteers The past 6 months have been stressful, and we at Keep Belmont Beautiful have missed being a part of everyday life here in town. As an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, this year we are promoting the national effort “The Great American Cleanup”. We will be holding a “virtual” Big Sweep using the hashtag #CleanYourBlock. Representatives from KBB will be in front of the Fighting Yank on Main Street in Belmont on Saturday morning, October 3rd, 2020 from 9am until 11am. We will be handing out bags, gloves and trash pickers to individuals and groups. We will be assigning areas, or if your neighborhood needs picking up, let us know where that may be. We are encouraging everyone to go out safely and pick up the areas that need attention. As you fill your bags, tie them up and leave them on the side of the road you have cleaned. Let us know where they are and we will have them picked up. Please snap photos of your filled bags, and email

Public schools now able to implement Plan A for elementary schools After several weeks of stable COVID-19 trends and continued low virus spread in school settings, Governor Roy Cooper has announced that beginning on October 5, North Carolina public school districts and charter schools can choose to implement Plan A for elementary schools (grades K-5). Plan A continues to include important safety measures like face coverings for all students, teachers and staff, social distancing, and symptom screening, but does not require schools to reduce the number of children in the classroom. “We are able to open this option because most North Carolinians have doubled down on our safety and prevention measures and stabilized our numbers,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “North Carolinians are doing the hard work to improve our numbers and trends. Many people are wearing masks, keeping social distance and being careful to protect others as well as themselves. We have shown that listening to the science works. And I’m proud of our resolve.” As the Governor an-

nounced in July, every district will continue to have flexibility to select Plan A, B or C based on their unique needs. In addition, districts should still provide an option for families to select all remote learning for their students. Dr. Mandy Cohen, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services shared an update on North Carolina’s data trends. Dr. Cohen explained that North Carolina has seen a sustained leveling or decrease of key metrics. “Our trends show that we are on the right track. It’s up to all of us to protect our progress. Our individual actions like those 3 Ws will help keep our school doors open.,” said Secretary Cohen. Dr. Cohen also explained that as schools have opened, the current science shows that younger children are less likely to become infected, have symptoms, experience severe disease or spread the virus. “It’s great news today that we are a step closer to providing the option of in-person learning to families who want their children to return

to school,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Mark Johnson. “While the Governor, the State Board of Education, and I have our differences, I join with them today to encourage local school board members to take advantage of this change and open all schools safely. I thank the many parents and teachers across North Carolina who have been vocal advocates on this important issue.” “For the past 6 months, superintendents, principals, teachers and local BOE have worked diligently to care for the safety of our students and staff while educating our children. While we are anxious to return all students, we know that teachers, principals, and students need a gradual transition over the next 3 months. I ask our parents to remain patient, knowing that we are moving as quickly as is safely possible. And I ask our teachers to continue to assist our students by supporting this deliberate, thoughtful transition,” said Eric Davis, Chairman of the State Board of Education.
