Bluegrass stars Darin and Brooke Aldridge appeared in concert at Cherryville’s Mini Park on Thursday, October 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. Their concert was to pay tribute and to honor the new mural of the “Sweethearts of Bluegrass” and is part of the N.C. Musicians Mural Trail, according to a media release by David Day of the Cherryville Chamber of Commerce. Mayor H.L. Beam welcomed the two performers telling them and all who came out to see them, “Wel-
come to historic downtown Cherryville, where life blossoms.” This mantra is the official motto for the city and has been for a number of years now. Beam noted the mural’s artist, Scott Nurkin, “…a fantastic job on the mural,” adding the city, council, and everyone who sees it every day is very proud of it and the “…two incredible artists whose images are up there.” According to their website, Darin and Brooke Aldridge “…have achieved nationwide stardom and have performed over 50 times at the Grand Ole Opry since 2017. Rep. Patrick McHenry named interim speaker of US House Republican Congressman Patrick McHenry, R-NC, is the interim speaker of the United States House of Representatives. It follows the historic GOP vote Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 3, to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-CA. The members voted to remove McCarthy by a vote of 216-210, with all Democrats present joining eight hard-line conservatives. McHenry has been
Speaker Pro Tempore since January, an appointment only known to a few people, kept secret until a speaker cannot fulfill his or her duties. He now controls the chamber as members determine their next steps. This is the first time a U.S. House speaker has been removed from power in history. In January of 2023, McHenry nominated McCarthy for speaker in the 14th round after multiple chamber votes failed to produce a majority for McCarthy. He See MCHENRY, Page 6

For Dr. Matt Thomas, Senior Pastor of Cherryville’s Second Baptist Church, coming to this church home was like… well, coming home! Rev. Thomas, 39, hails from Kings Mountain and graduated high school from Bessemer City High in 2002. He is married to Kristen and they are the parents to Sophia and Lydia. “I attended Gardner-Webb University for my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and I graduated in 2006 and 2009, respectively. I then received a Ph.D. in Historical Theology from Midwestern Bap-

She is an autism teacher in Shelby at James
Love Elementary.” Their daughters, Pastor Thomas said, go to school in Kings Mountain and are in 6th and 2nd grades. Rev. Thomas said that while his wife, who he noted,
“is my biggest support system,” doesn’t have an official position in the church, being a pastor’s wife is “…a full-time job!” When asked about his pathway to becoming a fulltime pastor, Dr. Thomas noted he is the first pastor in anyone’s memory in his family. He continued, “I have always been a Southern Baptist and always remember being in church. I came to true faith in Christ when I was 11 years old at a Vacation Bible School, where the pastor presented the Gospel and God opened my eyes to my need for salvation. I was a good kid, so seeing that I needed to be saved was a challenge. “My ministry ‘career’ started while I was a student at Gardner-Webb. I sensed a call to ministry while I was in high school and so I went to Gardner-Webb with the See THOMAS, Page 6
Twenty-three new laws set to take effect in North Carolina by THERESA OPEKA Carolina Journal
A set of 23 new laws went into effect on Sunday, Oct. 1, in North Carolina. Among them was S.B. 20, Care for Women, Children, and Families Act. While a portion of the law that re-
duced elective abortions from 20 to 12 weeks and gave paid parental leave to all state employees became effective on July 1, the section dealing with the safe surrender of infants went into effect on Oct. 1. The law was designed to protect newborn infants by providing a safe alternative for a parent who, in a crisis or in desperation, may physically abandon or harm his or
her newborn and to provide information for the parent regarding the parent’s rights and alternatives. One of the requirements is that the infant must not be more than 30 days old. In addition, the infant may be surrendered to the following: A health care provider who is on duty or at a hospital, a local or district health department or at a nonprofit community health center, a first responder, in-
cluding a law enforcement officer, a certified emergency medical services worker, or a firefighter, or a social services worker who is on duty or at a local department of social services. Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, vetoed the legislation on May 14, primarily for the change to the abortion law. That was overridden on May 16. See LAWS, Page 9

CFD Ladies Auxiliary having fundraiser for firefighter in need First fundraiser slated to run through Dec. 20, and will be a 50/50 raffle by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
Members of the Cherryville Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary (CFD/LA) as well as the CFD firefighters and crew members want to let the folks of Cherryville know they will be having a fundraiser or two in order to help a local firefighter in need. CFD/LA President Summer Heffner and CFD/LA Treasurer Brittany Bingham contacted CFD members as well as CFD/LA members via email last week to make the members “…aware that we will be running some fundraisers to help a firefighter in need.” The message continued, “These fundraisers will be run through the CFD/LA to help keep track of money and to be able to provide tax letters for any donations.” The first fundraiser, ac-
Assistant Cherryville Fire Chief Colby Heffner (left) and CFD/Ladies Auxiliary Board members President Summer Heffner (center) and Treasurer Brittany Bingham (right), before a recent CFD/LA meeting in the CFD station house board room. (photo by MEP/The Eagle/CF Media) cording to the email, started on Monday, Sept. 25 and is slated to run through Dec. 20. “This will be a 50/50 raffle,” the email noted, with tickets being sold at the CFD station house and by firefighters who choose to participate. “A committee has been put together of several CFD members to work on getting some other fundraisers started,” the email from Brittany Bingham, Administrative Assistant at the Cherryville Fire Dept., noted.
CFD/LA President Summer Heffner also stated in a follow-up email to the Eagle, “This fundraiser is to raise money for a local firefighter in need of assistance. We are selling 50/50 raffle tickets to raise money, and the tickets are $2 each. Anyone who is interested in buying tickets can see any CFD firefighter or stop by the station Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m., to 5 p.m.” She continued, “The drawing for the 50/50 raf-
fle will be held on Dec. 21, 2023. We are thankful for any donations and do not have a set number (they are looking for). There have been no future fundraisers decided on at this time.” Cherryville Fire Chief Jason Wofford also said, of the fundraisers by the CFD/ LA, “The Cherryville Fire Department is extremely fortunate the CFD Ladies Auxiliary is supported by the wives and daughters of our firefighters. They serve our
members well and have always done an outstanding job growing their group and supporting our scholarships and helping firefighters in need.” He continued, “The Ladies Auxiliary initially began in the early 1980s supporting firefighters in need, preparing meals for the department, buying kitchen supplies, and sending flowers or memorials to firefighters’ family members. They started the scholarships in 1992. The CFD/ LA has awarded scholarships for the past 31 years totaling over $46,000. This money is collected completely by donations and fundraisers held by department members and the CFD/LA Ladies. In the past, we have held raffles, 'Fill the Boot’ campaigns, ’Cow Patty’ Bingo’s, and – for the past decade – our annual night golf tournament. The CFD/LA is a legal notfor-profit 501c3 organization. Anyone in our service district is welcome to offer support through donations.” Chief Wofford also stated, “We used to have several corporations that donated regularly, but after the 2008
economic recession, this revenue stream decreased drastically. The CFD/LA is currently seeking corporate sponsors, especially for our annual Christmas Banquet we do each year for the members and their wives. Since they are a 501c3 the CFD/LA can provide donation letters to claim your donation when filing for taxes. “We are blessed that our CFD/LA is going above and beyond to assist one of our firefighters in need. The current need for our half-andhalf fundraiser is to assist with renovations for a firefighter’s home to develop better floor support that has recently collapsed, among a few other issues. At any given time the funds that our CFD/LA have year-to-year just cannot support this type of endeavor.” Chief Wofford concluded by saying, “As always, Cherryville is a very supportive community and we all are appreciative of our community in what they do to help.” For more information on how to donate or give, call the CFD at (704) 435-1730.
The Schiele Museum debuts new dino-sized lobby exhibit Visitors can see the world’s largest flying reptile GASTONIA – After a major update to the lobby of The Schiele Museum of Natural History, a new exhibit has been revealed to the public. As visitors open the front doors, they will be greeted by the large fossil cast of a Quetzalcoatlus feeding its young. Quetzalcoatlus lived in western North America in the Late Cretaceous period, 72 to 66 million years ago. The first Quetzalcoatlus fossils were discovered in the Maastrichtian Javelina Formation at Big Bend National Park of Texas in 1971. Named after the Aztec feathered serpent god, Quetzalcoatl, this prehistoric reptile is believed to be the largest of all pterosaurs. Adults were as tall as giraffes! The adult depicted in The Schiele’s
lobby display towers over visitors at 18 feet tall and over 30 feet from edge to edge. “Quetzalcoatlus is a one-of-a-kind display of the largest animal to master the power of flight, exhibited right here in Gastonia,” said Tony Pasour, Assistant Director for Interpretation. After over 20 years in the lobby, The Schiele’s iconic Wankel T-rex was dismantled in June. The museum plans to update the pose and look of the T-rex to better reflect recent discoveries and include it in a new dinosaur experience slated to open in 2025. A Dinosaur Day celebration was planned for Saturday, Sept. 30, and is included with museum admission. Visitors can now see the Quetzalcoatlus and enjoy the updated Dino Safari exhibit, family-friendly activities, crafts, and mini paleontology lectures. Get more information at schielemuseum.org.

ALDRIDGE From Page 1 Said Darin, “Playing at the Opry; that never gets old! The Opry kept going strong even during the pandemic.” They have a string of critically acclaimed and Number 1 singles. Most recently, the Aldridges were named 'Bluegrass Artists of the Year’ at the Absolutely Gospel Music Awards in Nashville.” Both Darin and Brooke are native North Carolinians, and live in Cherryville, where Darin also spent much of his youth, Mayor Beam noted. The duo talked about their new video and song, “Grand Old Circle,” which is about the Opry. Brooke noted to the crowd, “We feel your prayers when we’re on the road.” Darin also noted how honored they were to be up on the wall in downtown Cherryville. “You all make us proud we’re from Cherryville,” he said, adding, “it’s great to be able to see everyone.” With Darin and Brooke that night was their band, comprised of Billy Gee on bass, Samantha Snyder on fiddle, and Jacob Metz on banjo and resonator guitar.

It was painted by renown muralist, Scott Nurkin. It joins many other murals on the famed N.C. Musicians Mural Trail, which includes likenesses of many other stars like Don Gibson and Earl Scruggs.

In 2017, Scalise was shot by a gunman targeting Republicans during the GOP practice for the annual Congressional Baseball Game. McHenry stepped in as interim whip during his recovery. A key negotiator among Republicans, McHenry’s political stardom has been on the rise in recent years. He was named chair of the influential House Financial Services Committee in December following the 2022 election. He has served on
the committee since he was first elected in 2005. McHenry, 46, was born and raised in Gastonia and graduated from Ashbrook High School. McHenry earned a bachelor’s degree in History from Belmont Abbey College. He currently lives in Denver, N.C., with his wife, Giulia, and their three children. McHenry represents a district just west of Charlotte around Gastonia. He also served one term in the N.C. House from 2003 to 2005. (Editor’s Note: This story was updated on October 4, 2023)

FUZZY COW From Page 1 we welcome you to Cherryville,” said Mayor Beam. “Thank you for choosing Cherryville as the place where you wanted to open your new business. Your success here has been overwhelming and it is nice to see a new and unique business come to downtown.” Downtown Director David Day talked about how it was just a year ago that Kari and Carson came to Cherryville looking for a place to start a business. Said Mr. Day, “They were trying to make a choice and, we feel, picked
the best one between Shelby, Lincolnton, and Gastonia. It’s great to have y’all here.” Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors, Pete Craft agreed, adding, “We certainly appreciate your bringing your business to our Main Street! Your uniqueness in business is what Main Streets are all about in small towns, and we wish you much success.” Kari and Carson noted their thanks, with Carson saying, “Thank you all for having us. We felt we were very welcome here. Cherryville folks have blessed us a lot. Thanks for coming out and supporting us!”

his ministry going forward, Dr. Thomas said, “Second Baptist is a wonderful church. Our motto is, ‘We are second because we put Christ first.’ I have seen that to be the case in our time together. In terms of a vision for the church, I think the most important thing for the church is to always keep Jesus first. “I am an expositional preacher of scripture, which means we work through the Bible and allow God to speak to us because we know we don’t have all the answers. I believe that we all have areas to grow and so we do that best when we are humble enough to admit our need for grace. We are committed to reaching out into our community and seeing lives changed by Jesus. There is so much that is wrong in our world that it would be easy for us to be people who complain about what is broken. “I believe that instead of complaining we can point folks to the true answer, which is found in Jesus. Since coming in April we have seen over 15 new members come and lots of new visitors. Our sanctuary is starting to fill up to the point that we are in the

relocate without me being called to a church. One of our friends who knew about that conversation mentioned my name to Jason Ballard, the Director of Missions for the Cleveland County Baptist Association. Jason happened to be at a funeral sitting next to someone who attended Second Baptist. Jason mentioned my name to this church member who gave my name to the search committee. Within a few weeks, the committee had reached out and we had started the conversation about our coming to Cherryville. I preached my ‘trial’ sermon at the end of January (2023) and we started serving together on the first Sunday in April.” Dr. Thomas continued, “We love Cherryville and it is very much like coming home. I spent my teenage years as a member at Anthony Grove Baptist and was licensed for ministry by Anthony Grove. Even though it has been 20 years since then, coming to Cherryville to serve has been a wonderful and exciting experience.” In briefly describing his vision for Second Baptist Church and its growth under

intention of pursuing an academic career. When I was 19, I started preaching in churches throughout North Carolina and fell in love with the local church. “My first permanent vocation ministry position was at Mountain Creek Baptist Church in Rutherfordton, N.C. I served there for four-and-a-half years. I then served as pastor at Ranlo Baptist Church for six (6) years.” Dr. Thomas noted that “…prior to coming to Second Baptist I was the pastor for seven (7) years at First Baptist Church of Denmark, S.C.” Rev. Thomas said it has always been a passion of his to “faithfully teach the Bible so people can hear God’s word instead of man’s opinion.” As for how the Thomas’ came to be in Cherryville and how they like it so far, it was an easy answer for them. Said Pastor Thomas, “My dad passed away in 2020 and this started us thinking about if – and when – we might need to come back home to N.C. We were very happy in S.C., but knew that at some point we would like our daughters to be back where we were from. The story of how we ended up at Second Baptist is truly the work of God. My wife was approached by Cleveland County Schools about returning to one of their autism classrooms. She told them we weren’t really interested in moving back to N.C., and that we couldn’t really

CHS Ironmen gridiron squad gets a much-needed win Blanks HT Rams’ 46-0 in away game last week by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
The CHS Ironmen football squad got a muchneeded win last Friday night when they visited the Highland Tech Rams. The final score was 46-0, and it was pretty much an “all Ironmen win”. In what was described as a “team effort”, the young Ironmen team got on the board in the first quarter, 7-0, on a Josh Ward TD scramble, with the PAT by kicker Marlon Gomez being good. After the Ironmen recovered a Rams fumble, Ward moved the team downfield completing passes to
Rayshawn Sewell, Hunter Jackson, and others, while depending on players like Weston Bowers to carry the ball, gaining more yardage for the visiting Ironmen. At the half, the Ironmen were up 28-0 thanks to interceptions by players Andron Patterson and stellar runs by Sewell and Ward. Patterson’s interception turned into a 55-yard scamper for another Ironmen TD, with Gomez’s PAT good. Not to be outdone, Bowers and Moss both get TD’s as the Ironmen were well on their way to sewing this game up for Coach Pruitt. Patterson took a punt by HT back 70 yards for a TD, to punch home the point of the Ironmen’s determination to win this game. All in all, Shamyr Moss carried the ball 11 times for the Ironmen, racking up 61 yards; Ward carried the
ball 10 times, eating up 65 yards; Bowers carried the pigskin seven times for 33 yards; and Sewell carried the ball twice for 14 yards, for a combined total of 173 yards on the ground. In his role as QB for the Ironmen, Ward was 2 for 5 on the night. His receivers were Sewell (a 6-yard completion) and Patterson (10-yard completion), for which they rambled a total of 191 yards after catching their passes. The Ironmen intercepted the Rams three times on the night. The Ironmen will play next week at home against the visiting Gryphons of Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy. CHS Lady Ironmen; JV volleyball squads had a tough week It was a tough week for the Lady Ironmen VB squad as they lost two matches this week. On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the CHS ladies were on the road at league-leader Highland Tech. The Lady Rams won the match 3-0. Match scores were 25-15, 25-16, and 25-14. Coach Leigh Kiser said her team hung tough in each set but couldn’t get through. Taylor Digh and Krista Davis led the defense with 6, and 4 digs each, and Emily Allen led the offense with 6 kills. On Wednesday, Oct. 4, Chase came to Nixon Gym in a non-conference matchup, and turned back the Lady Ironmen in a hard-fought, 3-2 match. Kiser said her team played really well and had multiple chances to win the match. Scores were 25-21 (Chase), 25-17 (CHS), 25-13 (CHS), 25-13 (Chase), and 18-16 (Chase) in the fifth set. Sophomore Railey Gidney had her best varsity performance with 10 kills and 5 blocks. Taylor Digh chipped in 5 serve aces and 12 digs, with Kate Bookout’s 12 digs
and Krista Davis’s 9 digs helping the CHS defense. Emily Allen had 18 assists, 3 blocks and 12 digs, and Kate Mulvey had a strong overall game with 6 assists, 6 kills, and 8 digs. The Lady Ironmen JV team also dropped both matches of the week. It was a 2-0 loss at HT and a 2-1 loss at home to Chase. Landry Beam, with 3 serve aces, and Camryn Shirley with 4 assists and 3 kills, led Cherryville against Chase. Next week ends the teams’ regular season, as the ladies played host to Ashbrook on Monday (Oct. 9), and then hosted Thomas Jefferson’s Lady Gryphons in the regular season finale on Tuesday, Oct. 10. The TJCA match will be Senior Night as 4 senior volleyball players are recognized. Conf tourney action gets under way on Thursday, Oct. 12, with higher seeds hosting. The current CHS VB records are: varsity 9-11, overall; SPC 1A/2A play, 6-5; JV are 7-13 overall. (Information and stats by Brian Kiser)

NC’s Mark Robinson mentioned as possible VP pick by ALEX BALTZEGAR Carolina Journal
North Carolina’s Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who is currently campaigning to be the Republican nominee for North Carolina’s next governor, was named as one of three potential options for Vice President of the United States by a Fox News commentator on Sunday, Oct. 1. The commentator, Horace Cooper, named Robinson, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as potential picks for former President Donald Trump. Robinson endorsed former President Trump earlier this year. On the flip side, Trump has pledged to endorse Robinson for his 2024 gubernatorial bid. “Lieutenant Governor Robinson is flattered by the speculation,” a spokesperson for the Robinson campaign told the Carolina Journal. “He is proud to support President Trump, and they have a great working relationship, but they have not had any specific conversations about this. Lt. Gov. Robinson is laser-focused on serving North Carolina as lieutenant governor and becoming our state’s

Donald Trump would have major political impacts on both the national and state levels,” said Mitch Kokai, Senior Political Analyst at the John Locke Foundation. “Robinson’s strength always
has involved his impassioned speeches firing up audiences at home and outside North Carolina. That’s the type of quality the former president is likely to seek from a potential running mate.”
Kokai also noted the significant curveball Robinson’s selection as VP would throw into N.C.’s Republican primary for governor. “Without Robinson in the picture, former congressman
Mark Walker and Treasurer Dale Folwell would seem like the clear beneficiaries,” Kokai said. “Democrats would have to scramble to rework their plan of attack.”
would increase the default charge for past-due installment payments from $15 to $18, among other changes. S.B. 331 – Consumer Finance Act Amendments, includes various changes, including requiring any person who lends $15,000 or less at interest rates higher than those allowed under North Carolina’s usury laws to be licensed under the Consumer Finance Act. It would increase the amount a person could lend to $25,000 and require the servicers of those loans to be licensed. S.B. 582 – North Carolina Farm Act of 2023, defines a qualifying farmer for certain exemptions as a person who has an annual income from farming op-
erations for the preceding taxable year of $10,000 or more or who has an average annual income from farming operations for the three preceding taxable years of $10,000 or more. Some items exempt from sales and use tax under this section include fuel, commercial fertilizer, potting soil, compost, and seeds. The law also amends the Veterinary Medical Board inspection process and gives the board the responsibility to perform inspections of boarding kennels operated by veterinarians. H.B. 813 – The Pretrial Integrity Act takes away the responsibility of magistrates to set bail for some violent offenses. Instead, judges will determine
whether a person charged with specific violent crimes will be released from jail before going to trial. H.B. 815 – The Loving Homes Act, would abolish the “arbitrary” five-child cap for foster homes and allow decision-makers to consider additional factors. Under the former law, foster care homes are not allowed to have more than five children in the household for any reason, even if most are not foster children. “We have children sleeping out of state in other homes and facilities, sleeping in emergency departments, and sleeping on couches in DHHS offices,” Rep. Allen Chesser, R-Nash, said on June
29, the day the measure passed in the legislature. “I find this unacceptable, especially while the State Administrative Code arbitrarily denies families the ability to host foster children strictly because of the number of children.” Other bills that became law include: H.B. 190 – Department of Health and Human Services Revisions; H.B. 790 – Innocence Inquiry Commission Provision; H.B. 344 – Mental Health License Fair Practice Standards; S.B. 45 – Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors Supervision Requirements; S.B. 507 – Chiropractic Preceptorship Modifications; S.B. 171 – Department of Public Safety Agency Bill; S.B.

And such were some of you.” Undoubtedly, grace alone; by faith alone; in Messiah alone – are the foundations upon which Adam, Eve, Rahab, David, Mary, Peter, Paul and you are forgiven. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing;
it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast,” and, “According to his own mercy; so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” So, what must we conclude? The apostles and prophets encourage us to be as, “…the one who endures to the end will be saved.” Lest we be like those who, “believed in vain.” If the man in the mirror has no desire to glorify God and mortify sin – the Scripture exhorts that man to, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.” Although we will never, NEVER, be perfect on this side of eternity, each professing believer must have at least some desire to, “not love the world or the things in the world.” This is not always a pretty picture or ‘cookie-cutter’ life. But the true believer can rest assured that he is not alone in this fight; a person who has salvation has been sealed by the Holy Spirit! He is, “The Com-
forter” and “The Helper, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” We Christians can rest assured there have been, “Good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” And that, “God works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” So even, “With the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” In over a dozen years of Christian ministry, I find those in Western Christianity tend to have idioms and strange ideas about what a true Christian can and cannot do. They say things like, “Kids will be kids,” and “It’s whatever; I’m only human,” or, “They are sowing their wild oats,” and “Awww… let them taste the world so they don’t wander away later.” Brothers and sisters, having, “…so great a salvation” and so great a Savior – should we re-
ally, “Continue in sin that grace should abound?” God forbid! It’s a great comfort to know that the blood of Christ has forgiven my sins in the past, the sins I’ve committed today, and those I may commit in the coming days, months, and years. Ah! His mercies are new every morning. I am Christ’s and He is mine! So now we walk with the Messiah daily. We earnestly desire to glorify that Nazarene Who gave His life and rose again – for us and for His glory. Dear friend, perhaps the greatest encouragement to persevere is not to endure to avoid losing my place as His child (for this is impossible), but rather to fight the good fight because His grace is so tremendous. Friend, there’s nothing you could do to lose your place as God’s beloved! So, Who are you trusting in today?

Places of Worship Pumpkin Spice (2nd Part of “Fall” Series) What’s your favorite pumpkin dessert during the fall season? Is it cookies, bread, muffins, cupcakes, or cheesecake? Whatever strikes your fancy, spices impart flavor and aroma to those delicious foods. They enhance the appetite, add zest to the food, and boost their flavors. The top three spices I enjoy are cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. The scent of the DANYALE PATTERSON spices pulls me in. Even before I spot those delightful delicacies, I can’t wait to have a taste! Our lives are also supposed to yield a sweet fragrance that pleases God and points people to Christ. 2 Corinthians 15:15 (NIV) says, “For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.” Cinnamon My favorite of the three spices is cinnamon. Cinnamon was very important in biblical times and one of the ingredients in the anointing oil. Exodus 30:23-24 (NLT) says, “Collect choice spices—12 1/2 pounds of pure myrrh, 6 1/4 pounds of fragrant cinnamon, 6 1/4 pounds of fragrant calamus, and 12 1/2 pounds of cassia—as measured by the weight of the sanctuary shekel. Also, get one gallon of olive oil. Like a skilled incense maker, blend these ingredients to make a holy anointing oil.” Consecration and healing were the principal purposes for anointing oil. It is symbolic of the Holy Spirit’s presence and power. Many still use anointing oil today to pray for the sick according to James 5:14 (ESV). It states, “Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord.” Ginger Ginger, my second favorite spice, has a piquant flavor with a fiery and comforting bite to it. It certainly doesn’t fall under the bland or boring category. Likewise, we must snap out of any indifference, rebellion, or lethargicness and ask the Lord to make us spicy for him. Our world is full of hurting people, who desperately need others that have a burning heart for God’s word and serving, despite their own personal difficulties. Jeremiah 20:9 (NLT), “But if I say I’ll never mention the LORD or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Lord I praise you because you loved me and gave yourself up for me as an offering and sacrifice to the Father [slain for me and the entire world, so that it became] a sweet fragrance. My heart is overwhelmed with gratitude. Forgive me for not always being on fire for you. Lord, I ask for a fresh touch of your Holy Spirit. Cause me to overflow with your love so that it spills over into others. ” In Jesus’ name, I pray - Amen.” Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you!
