International Express opens new trucking business in Cherryville Firm is located in the Carolina Intermodal Business Park by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Cherryville, once the home of one of the world’s largest trucking firms – Carolina Freight – was able to once again have another large trucking firm inside its city limits. City and Chamber officials welcomed Mr. Howard Shope and International Express to Cherryville on Wednesday, June 23, with a ribbon cutting at their 1201 E. Church Street location. International Express Trucking (IET) formed in 2001, according to a Power Point presentation Mr. Shope used to introduce all who came to the ribbon cutting and BBQ luncheon, to the growing company. International Express now has, he noted, counting their

Shope noted their company has grown over the years to include, “…warehousing, distribution, repackaging, product sorting,

and transportation services.” After the prayer and blessing of the food by City Manager/Fire Chief Jeff Cash, Chamber Board

Chairman Pete Craft welcomed Mr. Shope and his staff and employees to Cherryville, adding that the company’s location to the

Shortly before the May 2021 school graduations and end-of-year events, the Cherryville Chamber of Commerce decided that this was the year they wanted to do a little “something special” for the Cherryville students. Said Chamber Executive Director Mary Beth Tackett via email, “The Cherryville Chamber wanted to do something special, not only for the Class of 2021, but all of

MLB’s Braves find a hero in local schools’ Renee Smith “Bigs” club finds a “Community Hero” at Tryon Elementary School by TODD HAGANS Gaston County Schools Special to the Eagle

On a recent Friday af-

ternoon, Tryon Elementary School principal Meghan LeFevers had to call one of her employees to the office, but it was for a good reason. LeFevers had worked behind-the-scenes with the Atlanta Braves and others to set up a Zoom call so Renee Smith, the school’s speech language pathologist, could find out that she is one of the Braves’ 2021 Community Heroes. The special recognition

honors Smith for her efforts to offer a program for students with disabilities to attend after high school. In 2018, Smith cofounded the Exceptional Foundation of Atlanta before moving to Shelby in November 2019. Smith says she is pleased to know that the organization she helped start will receive a $5,000 grant from the Atlanta Braves Foundation. “It is incredible and ex-

citing to know that what we established three years ago is being rewarded,” said Smith. When Smith stepped into LeFevers’ office, she knew something was up. Her colleagues do not typically wear Atlanta Braves attire at school, and the principal’s office is not usually decorated like a celebration is about to happen. “I thought my husband See HERO, Page 10

Dr. Seuss’ beloved ‘Lorax’ pays a surprise visit to Your CBL! by TRACI POLLITT Cherryville Branch Manager

As CHS 2021 grad Addie Seate reads a Dr. Seuss book to the little tykes and their parents at last week’s Summer Reading event at Your Cherryville Branch Library, The Lorax helps her out by saying, “We all need to speak for the trees!”

PAGE From Page 1 Attorney, Locke Bell. Page, who graduated from Cherryville High School in 2002, said he is “excited” about his appointment and looks for-

ward to the opportunity to serve the county and its people in his new capacity. He will be sworn in on Monday, Aug. 2. Said Page, “I am excited about the opportunity, of course, but in some ways it is bittersweet. I have been fortunate to practice law at an out-

standing firm, Arthurs & Foltz, LLP, with the best attorneys and people I know. I will miss them, and I will also miss my role as ‘counselor’, where I am able to counsel and assist a client with their legal matter. There are few greater honors than for a client to hire you as their attorney and for them to place their trust in you with their life, their family, or their business. I am honored that the bar and the Governor have entrusted me this wonderful opportunity, and I will work to build upon and maintain the trust of the people of Gaston County.” As for his appointment by Gov. Cooper, Travis noted, “I was initially inclined to remain in private practice, where I had the ability to learn and work in a variety of areas of the law; however, in the late Spring, I received a telephone call indicating that that the Governor’s Office would like to hear from me if I had any interest in becoming District Attorney. “From there, I wrote the Governor and indicated my interest in the position and eventually interviewed via telephone with Governor Cooper. A few weeks later, Governor Cooper called to offer me the position.” Page, a self-described “lifelong Republican,” said that “…for a Democrat Governor to reach across the aisle and appoint a member of the

The Lorax! This was a last-minute addition to our scheduled events, and we were pleased that we had a small crowd with only one week’s advertising. Addie Seate and Wyatt Wilson of The Cherryville Little Theatre previewed one of the Seuss skits from their Seuss Day event on Saturday, July 10. The kids loved seeing The Lorax and hearing about how to speak for the trees. Unfortunately, last week also saw the first cancellation of Outdoor Storytime. A few mornings had been cloudy with the threat of rain, but last Thursday there was actual precipitation, the sort of thing that makes for wet books and wet patrons. We’re hoping for sunnier skies the remainder of the summer. If you haven’t signed

up for Summer Reading, there is still plenty of time! We have records, books, and lots of suggestions for good beach reads. If you’re looking at traveling and don’t want to pack your suitcase with books, think about loading up a device with digital offerings from your library! We have good books to read while lounging by the pool, as well as language instruction, travel guides, and newspapers from around the world. All at your fingertips and available for free – you just need your Gaston County Public Library card. It's Survey Time! If you haven’t heard, GCPL is conducting a “Library Use and Hours Survey” until Saturday, July 31. This is your chance to tell the powers that be what you

think of current library hours, why you come to the library, and what additional hours you may like to see. This is your chance to help steer the library in a patron-friendly direction (although we believe we’re already patron-friendly, there’s always room for improvement). For more information on library related events and activities, call us at (704) 435-6767, or stop by the branch at 605 E. Main Street. Republican party to such an important position in today’s political climate is surprising for many, but I hope it is a testament to my work ethic and to the reputation I have built within the community.” He continued, “The most pressing issue I see is fully resuming our courts in the wake of the past year’s pandemic. We must resume felony jury trials, with priority given to murders and serious felony cases.” Travis’ parents were also Cherryville natives, he said, adding, “My mother, Gail Page, worked for Carolina Freight and now works for the Gaston County Police Department. My father was Gene Page, and he always worked in textiles. At the time of his cancer diagnosis and passing, he worked for Pharr Yarns in McAdenville. He was diagnosed with a rare cancer known as chondrosarcoma around the time I graduated from law school (May 2009). “That summer, I studied for and passed the bar exam, and I began my practice of law in October 2009 as an Assistant District Attorney in Wake County. On Aug. 30, 2010, the last birthday he would celebrate on this earth, he learned from his doctors that they were unable to treat him further. Around the same time of his appointment, I recessed court to pray in my of-

fice. I prayed, ‘Lord, please heal my father, or, at least give me a chance to come home.’ Within a few days, I learned of an opportunity to serve as Assistant District Attorney in Gaston County. Sadly, my father passed away on Oct. 7, 2010, before I could relocate and begin work here. Thanks to Locke Bell, however, he died knowing that his son was returning home.” Page’s younger brother, Jonathon, resides in Chapel Hill, and works at the University. Travis and his wife, Melissa, have two children: Madison (Maddie), 4, and Harrison (Huck), 2. On his choice of the law as a profession, Travis said, “I grew up discussing politics around the Sunday dinner table with my grandparents and uncles, and a desire to study the law was almost naturally imparted upon me. However, scholastically, I enjoyed math as much as social studies, and I really enjoyed high school physics. “When I attended Appalachian State University freshman orientation, I did so with the intention of either studying political science (and pursuing a career in law) or physics (where I would become an engineer and perhaps work for a NASCAR team). Call it ‘luck’, or divine intervention, but I was able to attend the departmental meeting for political science and unable

to attend the physics meeting. I never looked back.” Working under Locke Bell, said Page, “…was an answer to prayer, literally.” “However, when I first returned home to Gaston County, I was just thankful to be close to family in the wake of my father’s passing,” he said, adding, “I did not realize the privilege that it would be to work under and learn from Locke, but I would soon learn. “He is the perfect Southern gentleman lawyer and led by example. He could relate to and empathize with people from all walks of life, and his faith was evident in how he conducted himself as a prosecutor, always in pursuit of justice yet willing to afford a second chance to deserving individuals.” Travis noted he is “…very fortunate to inherit an outstanding office with wonderful prosecutors and support staff – and there is only one person who deserves credit for that – Locke Bell. To build upon his efforts, I want to hire additional prosecutors and staff. My office will also work to strengthen our relationships with law enforcement, the bar, and various other community stakeholders.”

TODAY’S QUOTE:

OPINION

It is not fair to ask of others what you are not willing to do yourself. –Eleanor Roosevelt

More of a little bit of this: a little bit of that! Little Town; Big Boom! – It has now been more that 10 days after Cherryville’s July 4th festival, a.k.a. our Independence Day Celebration, and as many times as I’ve written about this; on this; or just generally reminded everyone I know what an awesome event it always is (except that time back in the bad, ‘ole’ 2020 when we-uns couldn’t have one!), I never tire of crowing about to, well… to anyone who will listen to, or read about, what I have to say. It was so nice to be able to get back out in public – sans face masks (for may of us anyway…) – and mix and mingle with our family members and friends and all those who came to the town’s 2021 holiday celebration. It was great to be able to, in our own small-town way, say, “Happy 245th birthday America!” After all we’ve been through these past

few years, and what we still, sadly, seem to be going through yet, it was nice to see us all come together, even if only briefly, listen to some great music, shoot off some really cool fireworks, eat some great food, and, well… just breathe the free air again! Looking back, I know there are a great many of us who have lost loved ones and friends who won’t be able to do that anymore, thanks to the coronavirus. And, for many still, new strains/ variants of COVID-19 are

still out there, threatening to infect those who are not vaccinated or who are too young for it. I guess, being a child of the Salk Polio vaccine days, I will never really understand those who won’t (or don’t) get vaccinated. I can’t wrap my head around some of the silly arguments over NOT getting said vaccination. They range from the somewhat serious (I have a health issue and my doctor says…) to the truly (to me, anyway) strange/weird (“It’s agin muh religion/nature/beliefs”). Oh, well! To each his or her own, right? Anyway, as usual, I digress. All I want to say here is this: Great job, City of Cherryville; Fire Department folks; Police Department folks; Chamber staff; Main Street staff; to all who had a hand in making Cherryville’s Independence Day Celebration amazing – You are ALL the best! Thank you all, from the bottom of mine and my

One January morning a severe snowstorm hit me on the way to South Cleveland. School dismissed fairly quickly after I arrived, but teachers had to stay or lose part of their pay. I stayed because Nancy said I could go home with her if the roads were too bad for me to travel. I made it home safely, but just knowing she had my welfare in mind meant the world to me. Nancy will be missed by her husband and son, daughter and son-in-law, brother and sister-in-law, sister, nephews, cousins, and countless friends who knew her and loved her. wife’s hearts! Stupid is colorblind – Remember the song by Ray Stevens, “Everything is beautiful”? My favorite line in it goes something like this: “Red or yellow, black or white, we are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world.” I think that is probably from an old Sunday School song… maybe. Anyway, after suffering through yet another round of mainstream media ‘claptrap’ recently about how we just still cannot seem

to get along, no matter what the reason, whether it’s racism, greed, lust, or just plain old hatred of our fellow man, I told a friend of mine about how maybe we needed to change the wording of that song to fit our current feelings among most Americans today. His reply? “I’m way ahead of you on that one pardner,” he said. “Maybe it should say, ‘Red or yellow, black or white we are stupid, lacking sight!’ Michael, it just breaks my heart to see us

all so stupid about caring about our fellow man, no matter what color they are! I guess stupid is colorblind! We all have a touch of it somehow.” I agreed, smiled and walked off, thinking, “You’re probably right there my friend. Maybe it’s also deaf and dumb too!” My only hope is that this won’t be another summer of dumb, exacerbated by a heaping helping of hate and stupid. Pray hard, for America y’all! Pray hard!

Don’t give up your personal freedom You may create instability and insecurity for your personal Glenn Mollette life if Guest Editorial you put others in charge of your decisions. The idea of a child or acquaintance “shouldering” your life’s concerns and finances might feel comforting. Having someone else pay your bills and oversee your welfare might feel like a relief. For many it ends up being the end of freedom and security. You love your children, or that special niece or grandchild. You are so bonded to them. You may feel that adding their name to your checking or other financial accounts will increase your bond and the ongoing warm fuzzy relationship. Be very aware. An acquaintance wanted her daughter to have the family home so bad that she went ahead and did all the legal work to assign the house to her daughter. Her daughter’s name was added to all her

savings and checking accounts. For the rest of her life this poor woman never had a life. From that point forward, her daughter made every decision about what “was” her mother’s money. She would even tear up any kind of credit or retail purchasing card that her mother tried to get with commentary such as, “You don’t need these.” The mother spent her remaining years hearing almost weekly from her daughter that she was going to “put her in a nursing home.” Another acquaintance with a healthy savings account and beautiful house signed everything over to a nephew and gave him her power of attorney. He soon made the decision to put her in a nursing home telling her she would be better off. He now drives her car and spends out of her checking account. He has told her she will have to sell her house to cover the costs of her nursing home care. Just recently, an elderly acquaintance said, “I have no cash. My son takes care of paying all my bills, groceries and more but I don’t have access to any money.”

There is always the possibility that any of us could become physically or mentally disabled. Make your legal arrangements for when and if that happens. Be wary about putting children or loved ones on your accounts now. Get with your attorney and draw up a document that says, “When, such disability happens or death happens then Mr. or Mrs. John Doe are to have ‘this’ or ‘that.’” Of course, do what you want to do. Sometimes it works out. However, do you really need someone saying to you, “Now mom, now dad, do you really need to buy those shoes?” Or, “Do you really need to take that trip?” “Now mom, now dad, do you really need to be shopping at the mall?” Hey friend, it’s your money. You and your spouse work it out and if you live alone, you and God can work it out. It can be wise to seek financial counsel from a professional. However, you can do this without giving up your personal freedom.

Biden economic team predicts long-term slow growth by DR. MARK W. HENDRICKSON What is noteworthy about the depressing title to this article is its source. In a case of uncommon candor, President Biden’s economic team has announced that once the artificially high stimulus-juiced mea-

surements of GDP of the next two years subside, the United States will experience sub-two-percent growth for the rest of the decade. This dismal forecast wouldn’t be surprising if it came from Biden’s political opponents, but for it to come out of the White House itself is an astonishing

admission. You don’t need to have any specialized knowledge of economics to see why team Biden is projecting protracted slow growth. Consider the previous dozen years: Shortly after former President Obama left See GROWTH, Page 11

Mt. Zion Baptist Church’s VBS starts July 18 Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 112 Mt. Zion Church Rd., Cherryville, will have their Vacation Bible School from July 18 – 22. Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m., and Bible School is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thurs-

day they will provide a meal for attendees at 5:30 p.m., each day, then Bible School activities will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. They have classes for ages 3 to adult and a nursery is provided for younger children whose parents attend. I mean He eats like any man. He talks and laughs like the rest of us. I can’t even detect anything religious at all about Him. Oh, but the evening is still young and the house is full. Heavens help us! Who has allowed this woman to come in here with us men! Why, she’s one of the local harlots. Does she not have any conscience at all…coming in here to drum up business, no doubt? Here at this holy time. Just who does she think she is? Is she that desperate for a few coins from her trade? Oh, I see. She has made her way to the holy man. Of course, like everyone else she just wants

His personal attention. Now, let’s just see how human He is. She’s practically throwing herself on Him. If it wasn’t so dim I could get a better look. Wait, only now do I see how He is looking at her. Not with lust… or wanting. I see in His eyes compassion. Yes, I’ve seen it before. Like my mother when I was a child or my father when he spoke of God’s love for His people and how he prayed that I, his son, might know of it one day. And the look of my own loving wife, Anna, when she gave birth to our only child. I’ve seen that look of compassion and yet, somehow it is revealed to

me that His compassion is far greater than any I have ever witnessed with these Judean eyes. Only now do I seem to understand. He looks at her as one who has a longing to be accepted…not chastised for the life she has been living. She is wanting to be acknowledged, not judged for her choices… choices that have embedded themselves into a lifestyle that is not easily changed nor one easy to escape from. She yearns to be acknowledged as a person of worth. And He is just looking at her and what a penetrating look! I believe with my whole being that grace is being imparted and not by a single word spoken! Just

His intimate glance… such a gaze would move me to leave the darkness of my own life behind… such unspoken truth would make me dare to breath the fresh pure air He offers. Look! The symbol of her trade…the alabaster container which holds the mark of harlotry. She has broken it…and offered the expensive contents to Him. She has given Him her mistakes…her misdeeds…her lowliness of life… Miracle? Yes, I have seen my miracle this evening; but more, I experienced a miracle too. Surely, this is the Son of God.

INTERNATIONAL From Page 1 agreed, adding, when it was his turn to speak, “This is my second trip down here. You all have really made the place look nice.” He, like many other Cherryville folks and former Carolina Freight employees present at the event, also noted that the company appeared to be busy, and “on the go!” Mayor Beam continued, “It’s great to have your company here and great to see our town bringing in new businesses and people and watching the town grow!” The trucking firm is located in what is called the Carolina Intermodal Business Park, and once complete, Mr. Shope noted its 72-plus acres of asphalt will

have 300,000 square feet of space, allowing them to “…offer increased storage capacity and secure truck, trailer, and Ocean Container parking.” The site will also offer 24-hour security and “…cost-effective storage options for our customers,” he added. Gaston County Commissioner for Cherryville Township Allen Fraley looked around and said, “This is exciting. It brings back a lot of memories. A lot of memories! I was a supervisor on this dock. It was a humming place then; 24/7/365! It was an amazing place to work and it is again! It will happen!” State Representative Kelly Hastings (R-NC 110) noted it was an honor for him to be at the ribbon cutting. He spoke about all the highway work presently

being done and how that will help businesses like IET and others who need better access to the major highways in and around Gaston and Cleveland Counties, and towns like Cherryville, Shelby, Dallas, and Lincolnton. Mr. Shope, a Gaston County native and IET’s President and CEO, also welcomed everyone to their ribbon cutting and BBQ, and for offering them such great community support. “As many of you here today know, everything comes to us via the trucking industry. We are an asset-base carrier, that is, we own our own trucks and equipment and properties,” he said. “Just about everything I know about entrepreneurship I learned from an 11th grade textbook on business given to me by my

If we can make that happen, we feel it will allow us to offer additional services that should attract more businesses to the area. I am very happy with Cherryville, and the warm welcome we have received. The mayor and citizens of

Post 100 currently in lead in first round of playoffs Team wins first two games in best three-of-five series by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Cherryville’s Post 100 ball club currently leads the Lincoln Cardinals (Post 455), in the Area IV Western Division taking Game One of a best-of-three playoff series, 6-2, on Friday July 9, at Fraley Field/Memorial Stadium. Coach Reynolds started pitcher Noah Ingle, but Ingle struggled to find the strike zone and walked two Cardinals batters at the start of the first inning. Reynolds then put Noah Huss on the

mound and Huss struck out three batters. Huss stayed in until the fifth inning when he was relieved by Zack Wilson, who struck out six batters and walked one. Huss was credited with the win. Hitters and base runners for Post 100 were Wilson (1-4, a double); Zane Brockman (1-4, an RBI, and a walk); Will Heavner (2-4, an RBI); Cole Irby (1-4, an RBI, hit by a pitch, got on base twice on errors); Joseph Webb (1-4, hit by a pitch); Brett Mason (1-4, an RBI); Reid Stroupe (1-4, an RBI, on base on an error); Collin Robinson (1-4); and Cody Mosteller (an RBI, hit by a pitch). Post 100 scored six runs off of nine hits; made one

error; and left 11 men on base in this game. In Game Two of the best-of-three series in the first round of the Western Division Area IV playoffs, Post 100 played the Cards at their home field at East Lincoln High School, downing the Post 455 team 3-0. Post 100 is currently 2-0 in the series and played the Cardinals at Cherryville Sunday, July 11, at Fraley Field/Memorial Stadium. Post 100 Athletic Director Ned Yates said pitcher Zane Brockman had complete game, struck out eight batters and had two hits to help himself out at the plate. (Additional information by Susan L. Powell, Danny Eaker, and Ned Yates)

As Cardinals catcher Caleb Doolittle and the umpire watch, Post 100’s shortstop Zack Wilson crosses the plate, tying the two teams then at 1-1. West Lincoln product and Post 100 pitcher Noah Huss throws one to the plate in last Friday’s game at Fraley Field, pitting Post 100 against the visiting Post 455 Lincoln Cardinals.

Cherryville hosts 2021 Dixie Youth State Tournament by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The City of Cherryville welcomed the 2021 North Carolina Dixie Softball State Tournament to town last Friday, July 9, as the members of 45 teams and their families came to the opening day ceremonies at Rudisill Stadium. The free activities started at 6 p.m., lasting until around 7:15, then were followed by a welcome by Cherryville Mayor H.L. Beam, various Dixie Softball officials, then guest speaker and former Gardner-Webb head baseball coach, Rusty Stroupe. Cherryville’s Preston Long sang the National Anthem. The evening’s games and festivities were capped off by the Cherryville Traditional New Year’s Shooters chant and firing of their black powder muskets. The ceremony came to an end around 8:30 p.m. Mayor Beam, in his letter to the attendees, found inside the 2021 events program, noted that we here in Cherryville “…love softball and all youth sports… and want to do everything possible to make sure that this tournament not only meets but exceeds your expectations.” Beam also noted the City is fortunate to have the Dixie Youth (DY) Debs team who

won the 2012 All-Star State Championship; the DY Angels team, who finished third in the 2020 All-Star World Series; and the 2020 DY Debs team, who finished fourth in that year’s World Series. It is now our turn to repay that hospitality.” The teams from Cherryville in the tournament were: The Cherryville Sweetees – Alli Anthony, Eva Boyer, Brooklyn Cunningham, Paisley Hamrick, Lilly Kate Jackson, Raelyn Thornburg, Leigh-Ann McSwain,

The Cherryville Little Theatre’s Sarah Fox Sandoval recently announced auditions for the play, “Anne of Green Gables” are over and they are moving into the rehearsal phase of the play’s production. Sandoval said recently, via a media release, that “…with COVID restrictions and trying to juggle everyone’s calendar, we just got things approved and ready to go very recently! After over a year

Smith got to meet Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley via Zoom.

with no theatre we are finally ready to open back up with a classic!” “Anne” is described as a “…classic tale of a plucky girl who touches the lives of everyone she meets in 1905 Prince Edward Island, Canada.” Said Sandoval, “This straight play – meaning it isn’t a musical – and has roles for people ages 16 and up. It is written by Jody Johnston Davidson and produced by a special arrangement from Pioneer Drama Service, Inc., of Denver Colorado.” Ms. Sandoval noted the play’s auditions, held June 26, 27, and 28, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., are over, and the rehearsals are to be held from July, through August, up until the play begins. The play will be directed by Jim Chandler and will be held at the Cherryville Little Theatre, with performances being as follows: Aug. 20, 21, 27, and 28, at 7 p.m.; and Aug. 22, 29, at 3 p.m. For more information on the play or show times; tickets and how to get them; about the play itself; or about The Little Theater, please contact Ms. Sandoval at The Cherryville Little Theatre at (704) 7476536, or email her at thesarahsandoval@gmail.com.

was going to surprise me because he had been asking all of these questions,” said Smith, who has also served as the speech language pathologist for Beam Intermediate, Chavis Middle, and Cherryville High School. “I had no idea it would be something related to the Atlanta Braves.” Smith received a box filled with Braves memorabilia, and she got to meet Braves third baseman Austin Riley via Zoom. Her virtual interview with personalities from the Bally’s Sports South television network will be used for promotional purposes. Through its foundation, the Atlanta Braves started the Community Heroes program in 2016 to recognize people who have taken action in their own community to help others. The Braves and Bally’s Sports South will bring attention to the honorees and host “the day of their dreams” when all attention is on them during a Braves baseball game. Smith’s dream day came true on June 15 when she stepped onto the field at Truist Park to take the spotlight as a Community Hero winner. She watched the Braves, who are hoping for another run at the World Series after making it to the National League championship last year, take on the Boston Red Sox. So,

did she think the Braves will win? “Absolutely,” said Smith, who reluctantly admitted that tennis – not baseball – is her favorite sport. While living in the Atlanta area, Smith and two colleagues, Lauren Marks and Susan Keeney, formed the Exceptional Foundation of Atlanta after realizing the need to provide social and recreational resources for adults with disabilities once they graduate from high school or age out of the public school system. The program offers opportunities for participants to engage with their peers and connect with their community through volunteerism, social gatherings, and learning activities. “In our work, we want to be a voice for students who need support,” said Smith. “We want them to smile and feel connected. We are very appreciative of the recognition from the Atlanta Braves, and this is a great opportunity to focus on the students in the program.” The Braves hosted Smith and her co-founders, along with family and friends, in a suite at the ballpark, recognized them on the field while a video played on the jumbotron, and provided customized jerseys. She didn’t know everything that was going be done, but she knew it would be a surreal experience as the Braves bring attention to an organization that is still very dear to her.

CHS senior Dalton Pence shows off his cookie gift from the Cherryville Chamber.

GROWTH From Page 4 office, I explained why he had presided over a historically weak economy. The depressing economic weakness was a direct consequence of his policies. Subsequently, under former President Trump (until the COVID outbreak upset everything) the economy picked up noticeably, with minorities and lower-income Americans prospering as never before. While Trump was no free-enterprise radical (as is plain from his economically costly tariffs and his extravagantly wasteful spending, including sending direct payments to citizens in the name of COVID relief), he understood that the source of our country’s economic strength is the private sector.

The Cherryville Eagle

Reese Hoyle is caught in the middle of studying and proudly shows off her blue-sprinkled cookie.

He knew that the private sector provides the wealth that government spends, and not the other way around. Thus, he cut taxes, pared back burdensome government regulations, and allowed the private sector to flourish. Today, it is clear that Joe Biden is obsessed with erasing every last vestige of Donald Trump’s presidency. He wants to return to the status quo ante – the way things were B.T. (before Trump) when Barack Obama was president. With Biden reversing Trump-era policies and reinstating Obama-era policies, is it any wonder that the outlook is for a return to Obama-era slow growth? That is what I meant when I wrote above that you don’t need to be an economist to figure this out. Ideas and policies have consequences, and policies that

Substitute teacher Rev. Wayne Key was also very happy to receive a Chamber sweet treat for all his hard work at CHS during 2021.

caused sluggish growth in the past will cause sluggish growth in the future. The challenge for team Biden going forward will be how to convince Americans that prolonged slow growth is the best they could hope for and the right course for our country to follow. Accompanying the announcement of years of projected slow growth after the sugar-high of massive government cash handouts wears off, the Biden economists offered a lame excuse: They said the U.S. economy is caught in the grip of “secular stagnation.” That is only half correct. Yes, stagnation was and will be the problem, but it isn’t “secular” – that is, sluggish growth doesn’t have to happen. A more accurate description for long-term slow growth is “progressive stagnation.” The coming stag-

nation isn’t foreordained; it is simply the inevitable outcome of a progressive agenda that exalts Big Government and disdains free enterprise. It is the bitter fruit of the socialist mindset that despises the private-property order and craves top-down economic planning whereby government elites decree what should be produced (e.g., electric cars, wind and solar energy, etc.), even if that is what citizens don’t want or can’t afford. Centralized economic planning – i.e., planning by a political elite – only benefits the elite while progressively impoverishing the average citizen. It will be interesting to see if, in the next two election cycles, the American electorate responds to team Biden’s progressive agenda of longterm economic stagnation.

TREATS From Page 1 Tackett continued, “So, we came up with the idea to give them a ‘you made it!’ treat. We looked at different ideas, but with the COVID19 restrictions (then still in place) there wasn’t a whole lot we could do for these kids. So, we put our heads together and decided to partner with Butter Me Up to make (Ironmen) blue-themed sugar cookies (since all four schools have blue in their mascot colors) to every student and staff in all four of our Cherryville Schools!” Tackett said the elementary and intermediate schools will both received

theirs on Wednesday, May 23, at their drive-through awards day. She noted the total number of cookies given out was a whopping 1,610! These also included, she said, “…sugar-free (cookies) for anyone with diabetes.” “We are so thankful the partnership with Butter Me Up’s Chef Rebecca,” said Mary Beth. “She helped us to do something special for these kids and their teachers. Thank you so much Rebecca!” Tackett also noted they wanted to also celebrate Cherryville High’s Class of 2021’s senior’s so the Chamber decorated the school’s front door area in order to surprise them for exam week.

On June 8, then-Principal of CHS, Kevin Doran, received an autographed baseball bat from the members and coaches of the 2021 CHS Ironmen baseball team for his support throughout the many years of being the “head Ironman” at CHS. Doran transferred to Cramerton Middle School at the end of June 2021 and Cherryville Elementary’s principal, Shawn Hubers, took the helm at Cherryville High School. Taking the reins at Cherryville Elementary is longtime educator, Mrs. Audrey Hovis.
