CHS principal; staff getting ready for August 14’s Freshman Transition Camp

It will soon be time for all Cherryville students and prospective students to look forward to – or at least, toward – getting back to school; to the classrooms that await them.

In the case of Cherryville’s only high school, CHS, Principal Shawn Hubers said his upcoming school year starts with getting his newest students; his freshmen, centered on just what is expected of them and what they will be doing once school starts in earnest. That start, for them, begins with Freshmen Orientation, or as Hubers terms it, “Freshmen Transition Camp.”

Said Mr. Hubers last week, “Our Freshmen Transition Camp will be held on Monday, Aug. 14, 2023 from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., at Cherryville High School. Information about scheduling, academic requirements, athletics, clubs, and activities will be provided. All freshmen will receive

their semester class schedule at the end of Freshmen Camp.”

He continued, “Students will take a guided tour of our campus, as well as have the opportunity to ask any questions they may have about our school.”

Mr. Hubers noted that Cherryville High School (CHS) student leaders and classroom teachers will speak with the incoming freshmen and “…offer advice that will lead to overall

student success.”

Furthermore, he added, “Our guidance counselors and Career Development Coordinator will be available to answer questions related to student services, scheduling, and career pathways. This camp will only be for students. We will have a parent information night during the month of September.”

Gaston County accepts land parcels from Cherryville ETJ

Following a vote in May by the Cherryville City Council to hand control of five land parcels in that city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, the Gaston County Board of Commissioners accepted those parcels at a meeting Thursday night, July 27.

As part of accepting the parcels, the board placed the R-1 residential zoning on each of the five parcels, which is similar to the zoning the land was under while a part of Cher-

ryville’s ETJ.

The land in question totals 137.15 acres and has been identified as land that would become a part of the planned Piedmont Lithium mining operation.

The Board’s acceptance of these land parcels is legally required by the state following the Cherryville Council’s vote. It in no way signals any intent on behalf of the County on any future Piedmont Lithium mining proposal.

Ballard running in Republican primary for lieutenant governor

In a press release on her website, she said that “she’s running for Lt. Governor to pick up where she left off,” including fighting for children.

“Financial security and constitutional freedoms are in jeopardy for working families – the backbone of North Carolina,” she said. “They have been stretched thin by inflation, looked down upon by elites, and told their way of thinking and worshipping is no longer mainstream. Enough is enough.”

Ballard, who represented Watauga County, narrowly lost the 2021 Republican primary to Sen. Ralph Hise, R-Mitchell County, for Senate District 47’s general election. Hise secured 50.65 percent of the vote compared to Ballard’s 49.35 percent.

The primary was one of the most closely watched in the state because of its unusual matchup – two popular sitting state senators fac-

ing off after being “double bunked” in the same district due to redistricting.

Ballard had represented the old Senate District 45 since 2016. She served as chair of both the Senate Education Committee and the Senate Education Appropriations Committee.

NC comes in 7th place for hospital price transparency according to study

In its fifth semi-annual report examining hospitals’ compliance with the federal Hospital Price Transparency Rule, PatientRightsAdvocate.org

(PRA) found that North Carolina came in 7th place in the U.S. for hospital price transparency.

The nonprofit organization based its findings on a study of 2,000 hospitals nationwide. It revealed that only 721, or 36 percent, hospitals fully complied with the rule, which took effect nearly three years ago.

The study also found that a significant number of hospitals posted complex and hard-to-read files without user documentation, making them unusable in some cases.

A random sampling of 44 hospitals was looked at across North Carolina.

They found that 25, or 57 percent, fully complied with the rule, while 19, or 43 percent, weren’t.

UNC Medical Center and UNC Rex Healthcare, Atrium Health, and Novant Health were among those that were found to be compliant, and Duke University Hospital and WakeMed Raleigh were among those that weren’t, the same as a report from February. In addition, Duke Children’s Hospital & Health was also found to be non-compliant.

According to Fisher, the organization is focused on lowering the cost of healthcare and empowering consumers to be well informed about all prices systemwide in healthcare so that they can have choices and prevent them from being overcharged.

“People need financial certainty and need actual prices,” Fisher told Carolina Journal in February. “Estimates don’t really

In order for all these hospitals to bill their patients every day, they know these prices in advance, and they also know how to convert the formulas into dollars and cents, and they clearly know every plan name and every procedure name and code.”

The rule for hospital price transparency came from the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare, but turning it into standard practice has taken time.

The Trump Administration made it into the rule of law, requiring that hospitals post all prices online as of January 1, 2021.

A bill dealing with medical debt and billing in North Carolina, S.B. 321, Medical Debt De-Weaponization Act, has been sitting in the House Rules Committee since May 3. Its fate looks to be similar to H.B. 1039, also known as the Medical Debt De-Weaponization Act, which stalled out in a House Banking Committee hearing in June 2022.

Summer Reading is almost over! We’ve had so much fun this summer with our patrons and our community. We started by saving the Earth from a super-polluting mastermind in Talewise’s presentation of “Science Heroes: Saving Earth Together.” Then Shepherd Shakespeare brought us a wonderful introduction to the Bard with their child-friendly version of “A Midsummer

Night’s Dream.” Finally, our friends at the Schiele Museum brought examples of unity and beneficial partnerships from the animal kingdom to our branch. We were also able to partner with and highlight other Gaston County departments by bringing in Erin Hines from Natural Resources as well as Officer Chad Owens with the County Police. Finally, we had the best time ever when we partnered with Cherryville’s own Fire Department for Family Storytime! We’ve received wonderful feedback about this summer’s events – stay tuned for “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” coming next summer (2024)!

If you recall, we wrote about our Community Reads display in the May 31 edition of this paper. The brainchild of Ms. Emily, suggestion slips were put out for patrons so they could share favorite titles with others in our community. This display has been so successful that we’ve decided to keep it going through the fall. If you’ve read a wonderful book and want to share it with other library patrons, let us know! We also moved our “Craft & Chat” monthly event from a Friday morning to

a Saturday morning. This move enabled several crafters to join the group, people who normally have a scheduling conflict with a weekday morning event. After looking at our calendar, we realized we could make this move permanent. Beginning in August, “Craft & Chat” will be held the last Saturday of each month at 11 a.m. If you’re an adult who enjoys crafting, drop by and check it out.

Watchdog group’s ad compares Cooper to segregationist George Wallace

A new ad from a national watchdog group compares North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper to former Alabama Democrat governor George Wallace, a prominent segregationist.

The thesis of the ad is that Cooper’s opposition to school choice in the Tar Heel State is blocking opportunities for minority students to have a better shot at success in life. The ad also calls out President Joe Biden, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten.

“In 1963, Alabama Governor George Wallace stood in the schoolhouse door to keep black children out of the best schools. In 2023, a new generation of George Wallace Democrats is again blocking schoolhouse doors, opposing popular school choice programs,” the ad says.

“In states like New York, Arizona, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina and Texas, Democrats are fighting programs that give black and Hispanic parents the ability to send their kids to the best possible schools. Yet many of these same politicians send their own kids to private schools. It’s time for every child in America to finally

have equal access to good schools.”

The was created by the group Unleash Prosperity Now.

Cooper has declared a statewide emergency over funding for traditional public schools, while continuing to target school choice programs – chiefly the Opportunity Scholarship Program – that are popular with voters. The governor has also vetoed two bills that would expand and strengthen charter schools.

A recent poll shows that support for school choice stands at 71 percent among registered voters, including 73 percent among blacks and 71 percent among Hispanics..

City Manager Dalton said, “The basketball court is completed. The pickle

ball court pad has been poured, but it will likely be 30 days before the court is completed and ready for play. We also still have to fix the culvert and pave the track around Westgate.”

In a July 11 email to the Eagle. Mr. Dalton had noted Mr. Sosebee had done a lot of work for the City in the past, adding the “…tennis courts at Aaron Moss Park was one of his projects.”

Also, under “other business,” council members discussed who to bill for a

pile of trash and old furniture that was placed out on the street on Rudisill Street and left for the city to pick up and dispose of, a job not normally under the city’s purview to perform, unless agreed upon previously between them and the owner of the house or building from which said debris has come or originated. There being nor further business, the meeting was adjourned. The next regular city council session

will be held Monday, Aug. 14.

The greatest calling in all the world is God’s calling…

Recently, my family and I took a vacation to Tennessee and visited Beyond the Lens. One of the exhibits was a replica of the White House Press Room.

I stood behind the desk to have my picture taken and my wife posted it on Facebook. Several of our friends commented that I had their vote. Even though the picture was just for fun, I believe that the calling on my life to preach the Word of God is highest and most important calling that ex-

ists, and I could not imagine doing anything else.

This year marks 17 years in pastoral ministry for me, not including my time as a youth pastor. What a joy and challenge it’s been to shepherd Christ’s flock. Here are some lessons God has taught me during these years (in no particular order of importance): (1.) The church doesn’t belong to me, but to Jesus. He died for it, is building it, and will not let the gates of hell prevail against it. The Head of the church doesn’t need me but chooses to include me in shepherding

Roller Coasters

Attending carnivals, amusement and theme parks over the years has always been a great experience for my family and me.

Some of my favorites include Disney World, Six Flags, Busch Gardens, and Kings Dominion. The top attraction has always been the roller coaster rides: the faster, the higher, or more adventurousthe better. However, when I stood in line, I found myself doubting whether I should actually go for it. My confidence was challenged by fear. Now, don’t leave me hanging. Have you ever wanted to do something, but began to talk yourself out of it because you were afraid? Was it a business endeavor, a ministry opportunity, or a new relationship? Fear will hold us back if we let it. Nevertheless, God doesn’t want us to be paralyzed by fear. 2 Timothy 1:7 (AMP) says, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind, and self-control].”

Take Your Peace

Anytime I feel anxious about anything, I start praying and asking God for peace so I can enjoy the moment that I am in. Philippians 4:6-7 (AMP) says, “Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].” One way I receive peace is to praise and thank God for his peace. Fear won’t hang around when you get busy praising God. The peace of God will envelop your spirit, soul, and body. It’s nothing that the world provides. It’s the supernatural presence of God, for Jesus is the Prince of Peace. John 14:27 (AMP) says, “Peace I leave with you; My [perfect] peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid. [Let My perfect peace calm you in every circumstance and give you courage and strength for every challenge.]”

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“I praise you Lord as the mighty God, everlasting God, Wonderful Counselor, and Prince of Peace. Thank you for peace that surpasses all understanding and that guards my heart and mind in Christ. May I always be aware of your Presence even when I am on an outing. Lord, please strengthen me when worry, anxiousness and fear try to overtake my mind as I ride on the roller coaster of life. Please drive fear from my life. In Jesus’ name, I prayAmen.”

It is vital for the pastor to surround himself not with yes-men, but instead, with men who will lovingly challenge him in his walk with Christ; (8.) Pastoring is never less than preaching and teaching the Word. It’s always more than this. Shepherding entails deep relationships of love and trust. If you’re not cultivating these relationships, you’re not really

pastoring; (9.) Pastors must be the lead disciple-makers in the church; (10.) Developing leaders is one of the most important responsibilities God has given pastors; and (12.) In leadership, you must not measure growth in weeks and months, but years and decades.

Sometimes it IS tough being a pastor. But, one day when I get to heaven and see the many people that God allowed me to have a small part in their lives, I believe I will be able to say, “It was worth it all!”

Hebrews 13:7 says, “Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their way of life, imitate their faith.”

Summer football mini-camp great fun for kids; coaches

Volunteer coaches from CHS, Chavis; former Ironmen and Wolverine gridders help 80-plus youngsters learn some pigskin skills and drills

Cherryville High School Ironmen head football coach Tim Pruitt, CIC, AIC, said recently last week’s Mini Football Camp for the Little Ironmen and John Chavis Middle School Wolverines took place last week on Tuesday, July 25, and lasting until Thursday, July 27.

Said Pruitt, “Coaches from the Little Ironmen, Chavis Wolverines and Cherryville High School worked with the players. We are proud of them and their willingness to come out and work with these kids. Great work was also provided by 30 members of the CHS football program, as well as former players Kadin Beaver, Jack Dellinger and Kam Bolin.”

Pruitt added that during the three-day camp there were 80-plus players who participated and improved their craft

Coach Pruitt continued, “We have been doing these camps at CHS since the summer of 2016, though we had two years off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Camps like this have been a part of my coaching background when I was an assistant at Starmount, to all of my head coaching positions, such as at West Wilkes and Watauga.”

Pruitt also thanked his staff and fellow Ironmen coaches, Scott Jenkins, Matt Powers, Will Puckett, and Austin Treadway, who he noted “…helped, along with the coaches that I mentioned, like John Chavis Middles School Wolverines Head Coach, Scottie Gibson, and the Lit-

tle Ironmen coaches.”

As for those former CHS Ironmen players who came back and helped out, Pruett noted Kam Bolin, who is going to Bluefield University in West Virginia, and had to report back to that school last week; Kadin Beaver, who is returning to long snap at Methodist University; and Jack Dellinger, who he said will be attending the University of Tennessee.

Pruitt was especially excited about the number of kids at this year’s camp, as it was – to date – the largest they’ve had turn out, so far.

Said Coach Pruitt, “We had over 80 kids! Our numbers have ranged from the 30’s to the 60’s through the years. Thanks to our coaches – Will Puckett and Scottie Gibson, and all the parents who got the word out to the community through social media.”

Pruitt noted they had a few kids that were pre-K and went all the way up to eight grade, so the range would have been from ages 4 through 13.

“Our largest group was the third and fourth grade group with 26 players,” he said.

Coach Pruitt was pleased to see the kids learning football skills and drills while having fun, all at the same time.

“The players hopefully learned some technique,

but our emphasis was to have fun,” he said, adding, “We also stressed getting better daily and to always compete at everything you do. Thus, consider doing more than playing one sport. At a small school it is important that kids do this to help make all of our programs successful.”

He continued, “Our players that worked with the campers got to enjoy kids who are out there to have a good time, but also had to be patient if that player was not listening or having a hard time understanding their coaching.”

Pruitt then gave a sly smile and added, “This will probably be reversed when the first day of practice begins on Monday (July 31).”

The induction class will be comprised of Dewey Quinn, Chuck Dellinger, Donald Alexander, Drew Reynolds, Allan Davidson, Scott Heavner, Alan Lindsay, Chad Cash, Calvin Padgett and Wendy Holt and the 1982 Cherryville High School N.C. 2A state championship baseball team.

Cash, the chief operations officer at Carolina Federal Credit Union, played baseball on Cherryville High’s N.C. 2A state title team in 1998 and Cherryville Post 100’s 1998 American Legion World Series runner-up.

A skilled golfer, Cash has won six club championships at Cherryville Country Club, and this spring he took over as golf coach at Cherryville High. Cash also has been a coach and administrator for the Cherryville Little League program from 2005 to 2021.

Padgett, a 1987 Cherryville High graduate, was a state champion in track and held most of the school’s track records for

more than 20 years.

Holt, a longtime cheerleading coach at Cherryville High, has guided her program to more than 20 state championships in the sport in various divisions.

The 1982 Cherryville team that was coached by Jones, had a 25-2 overall and rallied to beat South Granville in the state finals after losing the opener of the best-of-3 championship series. The team featured future college baseball players and future Cherryville Sports Hall of Famers Bobby Reynolds (1998 induction), Brad Long (1998), Rusty Stroupe (1999) and its coach Henry Jones 1999), Kent Alexander (2001)

Post 100’s “aged out” players play last Fraley Field game July 20

On Thursday night, July 20, Post 100 American Legion seniors baseball players, led by Head Coach and Program Director, Bobby Reynolds, along with his assistants, Drew Reynolds, Zach “Dub” Wilson, and Brent Walls, greeted the following six (6) young men prior to their last game at Fraley Field as a Post 100 Legion ball player. Thanks again to these players and to their families for their time and dedication to the Post 100 Baseball Program!

The young men are: #12 Joseph Webb – Senior Team

'21, '22, and '23. A Burns HS 2022 grad, and attending Catawba Valley Community College; #15 Zane Brockman – Senior Team '21, '22, and '23. A Kings Mountain HS 2023 grad and attending UNC Pembroke; #17 Reid Stroupe – Senior Team '22 and '23. A Burns HS 2023 grad and attending Cleveland Community College; #9 Collin Huss – Senior Team '22, and '23; on the 2021 Post 100 Junior Team that won the Junior Legion State Championship, a Cherryville HS 2023 grad, and attending Cleveland Community College;

Cherryville’s Post 100 American Legion seniors team season over

(30-6) took on Area 3, No. 1 – Rowan County Post 342 (37-5). Wayne County won that one, 4-1.

In Game 4 action, host Area No. 2, Fuquay-Varina Post 116(23-3) played Area 4, No. 1 – Cherryville Post 100 (22-12). Post 100 lost to Fuquay-Varina, 3-1.

In Game 7, Pitt County played High Point. High Point won 12-1.

In Game 8’s action, Wayne County faced Fuquay-Varina. Fuquay-Varina defeated Wayne County by a score of 10-4.

No. 2 – High Point Post 87 (17-4) played Area 2, No.

–Wilmington Post 10 (16-2), with High Point winning by a score of 5-1.

In Game 6, Rowan County played Cherryville’s Post 110 men. Rowan County won by a score of 11-4.

With that outing at the state finals level of play, Cherryville’s Post 100’s senior team baseball season is officially over with them finishing 0-2 in the finals.
