Simply Refreshing

SMILE...

LIFE IS

It improves your life When life gives you a hundred reasons to frown, show life that you have a hundred reasons to smile. Life can be difficult. We not only spend a lot of time but also a lot of money searching for ways to have a healthier and happier life. Here is one simple answer, and the best part is, it won’t cost you anything… SMILE. Smiling is an easy way to give many benefits to your life. It can add positivity in your day. Take a minute and try to think of something negative and keep a smile. It’s pretty difficult to do, right? Smiling sends a message to your body that allows it to know everything is okay. It also helps your mood. When you are feeling down, try smiling. It is likely you will start feeling better. Your stress level will lower, and you will start feeling more relaxed. It is a natural way to release endorphins to your body. Now that you’ve smiled, you look happier. It is a free face-lift every time! The muscles used to smile lift up your face making you look younger. We are naturally attracted to people who smile. We want to get to know the person that is confidently smiling because they are bringing so much happiness with them. Frowns and grimaces push people away. Smile and you’ll have people drawn to you. With all of these benefits, how can you afford

not to smile? It’s simple and contagious. Help yourself and others around you by simply smiling. Because smiling can bring so many benefits, it is important that you take care of that smile. Your teeth are the most winning feature to it. However, there is more to taking care of your teeth than just simply brushing them. Make sure to floss daily. Brushing reaches only about 65% of teeth surface area; the other 35% can be cleaned by flossing. Rinsing after you eat will clear the oral cavity of any food debris that bacteria thrives on, and using a fluoride rinse will help strengthen your teeth and help prevent decay. Most importantly, visiting the dentist regularly will help prevent problems with your teeth and gums. Prevention is always better than a cure. Your dentist will give you a professional cleaning twice a year and a dental exam with x-rays yearly. Make sure to visit your local dentist to keep up with your pearly whites! When you take care of your teeth properly, you’ll have a smile that is confident, and one that will also look great! So remember, before you leave the house, make sure to put on your healthy smile, because only then will you be fully dressed! Dest Family Dentistry

Some pretty unfortunate numbers... Listen up, men. See the doc. By THOMAS LARK Contributing Editor MOUNT HOLLY—Most men do a lousy job maintaining their own health. That’s the word from Dr. Dino Graziano of Gastonia. An emergency room veteran who is now a general practitioner, Graziano is that rarest of modern doctors. He actually makes house calls. Seeing patients in Mount Holly recently, Graziano lamented the fact that most American men just aren’t sufficiently health-conscious. They might take a cue from the good doctor himself. Trim and energetic, the 50-something New York native doesn’t smoke, drinks only an occasional glass of red wine and maintains a caloriecounting vegetarian diet. “It’s not hard at all,” he said. “Make that change today. Start a set of new healthy habits. And pretty soon, it’s all second-nature.” But don’t those big, juicy fast-food sandwiches appeal to him? C’mon, Doc. “No,” says Graziano, “not a bit—especially when I think what they would do my body!” Most men lack that self-discipline. From skipping important health screenings to avoiding a visit to the doctor altogether, new results from a survey released by the American Academy of Family Physicians show that men continue to fall short when it comes to managing their personal health, as Graziano noted. “These are some pretty unfortunate numbers,” he said, perusing the study. He explained that the academy recently surveyed 2,282 men and women across the country about their health behaviors. Among the findings are the following. •More than half (55 percent) of all men surveyed have not seen their primary care physician for a physical exam

within the past year. •Four in 10 (42 percent) men have been diagnosed with at least one of these chronic conditions: high blood pressure (28 percent), heart disease (eight percent), arthritis (13 percent), cancer (eight percent) or diabetes (10 percent). •Almost one in five men (18 percent) 55 years and older

have never received the recommended screening for colon cancer. •More than one out of four men (29 percent) say they wait “as long as possible” before seeking help when they feel sick or are in pain or are concerned about their health. •Despite this, nearly eight in 10 (79 percent) of the men described themselves as in “excellent,” “very good,” or “good” health. “American men aren’t as healthy as they say they are,” Graziano said. He noted that the survey reveals men spend an average of 19 hours a week watching television and more than four

hours a week watching sports. Yet just slightly more than one-third (38 percent) of men exercise on a regular basis. And according to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control, nearly three out of four (71 percent) of American men are overweight. Cited in the study is Dr. Rick Kellerman, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. “One of the biggest obstacles to improving the health of men is men themselves,” Kellerman states. “They don’t make their health a priority. Fortunately, 78 percent of the men with a spouse or significant other surveyed say their spouse or significant other has some influence over their decision to go to the doctor.” Being one himself, Graziano said his fellow family physicians focus on prevention and the early detection of illness by treating the whole person and the whole family—men, women, children, and the elderly. Family physicians provide routine check-ups, healthrisk assessments, immunizations, screening tests and personalized counseling on healthy lifestyle choices. They also manage chronic illnesses and coordinate care, when appropriate, with other specialists. And according to Kellerman, an ounce of prevention beats the alternative. “Many men are unaware that simple screening tests and lifestyle changes can dramatically improve their quality of life,” Kellerman states. “Family physicians are well equipped to address men’s physical, mental and emotional health concerns and provide the medical guidance necessary to keep them in the best of health.” Want to know more? Graziano encourages you to check out the Website at www.familydoctor.org.

A bootcamp for new dads Boot Camp for New Dads®, a program to help new fathers become dependable, caring, and involved parents, is part of what is offered at Cleveland Regional Medical Center for expecting parents. The program is a man-to-man workshop – no women over two feet tall are allowed (meaning young daughters are welcome). In a relaxed environment of all men, a trained coach along with experienced dads who bring their infants answer questions, instruct, coach and demonstrate how to perform basic care-giving tasks. Founded more than 20 years ago, the program started with a group of concerned men who began working with childbirth educators at Irvine Medical Center in Irvine, Calif. The men were searching for a way to help new fathers gain the skills and confidence they needed to care for their first child. The program is now available throughout the U.S. and its mission is to assure that every child has a caring and capable father, beginning at birth. One of the most empowering experiences for new fathers is to get to come back to Boot Camp with their baby. This allows him to show as the “veteran dad” the rewards and confidence gained through his class and real life experience thus far. Expectant fathers appreciate the opportunity to ask questions and get answers from a man’s point of view. Sometimes men are not comfortable asking about intimacy, finance, or even how to interact and “play” with a baby in

a typical childbirth class or mixed group. Most dads attend the workshop within a few months of the birth of their first child. During the workshop, which typically lasts between two and three hours, new dads learn that their fears and anxieties are common. They are able to voice concerns that other men understand and can learn how a now experienced dad handled a situation. New dads leave the workshop with a new-found confidence, knowing that they can do this. The real winners in this program however, are the babies. By attending this program and learning how to be an involved, caring father, these new dads are providing a solid foundation for their child. Since 1990, more than 300,000 men have graduated from Boot Camp for New Dads®, making it the largest program for dads in the U.S., according to the program’s website. The program is now being offered in communities across the country, in Canada, the United Kingdom and more. If you are a dad expecting your first child, have recently had your first child, or you know a new dad who might be interested, Boot Camp for New Dads® is offered at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. What Does Our Service Mean To You? AS A HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL OR FACILITY:

Running with Pain? You might be in the wrong shoe. The shoe salesperson boasts that the running shoes he is trying to sell you are the best on the market; incidentally, they are also the most expensive. You are very excited by the promises made about the shoes, only to be disappointed after you purchase them because your feet are killing you. “Oh well you say, “I guess I just need to break them in! In this case, persistence doesn’t pay off and after a few weeks of trying to “break in your new shoes, you develop constant foot pain. The truth is you have a 1 in 3 chance of purchasing the right shoe. Most people do not know that all major athletic shoe companies make three distinct types of shoes for three different types of feet; they are neutral (or cushioning), stability, and motion control. Real men eat

ÂŽ

Veggies by Scott Laird Hallelujah Acres

Ever since former president Bill Clinton announced on CNN earlier this year that he was trading in his trademark burgers, fries and barbeque for a new diet of vegetables, fruits and beans, the word “vegan has become all the buzz. Where does he get his protein? Can a man really survive with no meat, dairy or eggs in his diet? What about strong muscles, strength and endurance? A vegan diet can provide all of those things, plus reduce a man’s chance of coronary disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and a host of other health issues. In a strange twist of timing, there’s even a new vegan-themed documentary available on DVD called Forks Over Knives — which is to say, choosing to put your “fork in the healthiest foods can help avoid the surgeon’s scalpel (i.e. “knife) later. A vegan diet is a vegetarian diet in its purest form: no animal products whatsoever. That means no meat from any land animal, bird or fish and nothing that comes from an animal, such as milk, cheese, butter or eggs. Vegans eat only what grows from the ground: vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, grains, etc. Truly health-conscious vegans also avoid refined sugar, white flour and other highly processed foods. Why in the world would anyone want to do that?

Men and their weight Weight loss starts on the inside If we were to turn on the TV, read the newspaper or get on the web searching for weight loss ads you would notice most of them are geared towards women. It seems somewhat difficult for some men to ask for help, whether that’s for directions or something concerning their health. Being a weight loss consultant, I do see more female patients than male patients. However, the male patients I do see are just as devoted in seeking how to gain a healthy lifestyle and keep it. Men can jump on the band wagon for different fad diets just as women can. Key word is DIETS and there are no such things in my book; it’s all about getting on board with making healthy lifestyle changes as opposed to trying new diets. Inevitably diets always seem to fail and poor dieting can lead to Metabolic Syndrome. This is a combination of medical disorders that, when occurring together, increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In my opinion, if our society ate more like a diabetic diet there would be less obesity and fewer health issues. Studies suggest meal replacement shakes are the way to go. Men, if you want to do it right, you definitely need to start from the inside out. There are several different options when starting on a weight loss plan, whether it’s prescription diet pills, hCG injections or meal replacement shakes and hands down exercise, exercise, exercise! Men can benefit from any of these options just as women can. There are also cosmetic laser procedures to help speed up you success and able you to meet your goals. Laser LipoTherme (laser liposuction), Zerona (non-invasive slim down laser) or Smooth Shapes (non-invasive smooth skin laser). BHRT, which stands for Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, is another option for men to check into. Hormones not only affect women and can prohibit their success in weight loss but can also have similar effects on men. See WEIGHT on Page 18

P90X is one challenging workout By Kyra Turner Staff writer People do a lot of different things to lose weight or get in shape. Some lift weights and hop on treadmills at the gym. Some work up a sweat in a Zumba class or build their core in Pilates. Some embark on a new lifestyle at Weight Watchers, while others seek a quick fix, the magic diet, the best workout . . . People will spend thousands of dollars on temporary solutions, go under the knife and to the extreme to shed those pesky pounds, when all they have to do is go back to the basics. A good diet and exercise will do the trick. But for those into “the extreme” a new exercise seems to be having a lot of success. Jonathan Bundon of Kings Mountain uses P90X to help stay active. “I use P90X as a supplement to my running,” Bundon said. “I’m not a fanatic, but I make an effort to stay active each day. This may be running, doing a P90X routine, jumping rope, push-ups, even walking with my wife and son. The key is staying active with something that you love to do.” “P90X Workout: A Revolutionary Home Fitness Program” is not one of those “quick fix for instant results” kind of programs. There is no magic pill to getting into great shape. P90X is an exercise routine that demands work…hard work…and a lot of sweat. P90X is a home exercise system developed by Tony Horton in conjunction with Beachbody CEO Carl Daikeler, Beachbody Fitness Advisor Steve Edwards, nutritionist Carrie Wyatt, Creative Director Ned Farr, and workout video director Mason Bendewald of MEGA MACE productions. It claims to significantly improve physical fitness in 90 days through a rigorous segmented training program combined with a nutrition and dietary supplement plan. P90X’s advertising emphasizes “muscle confusion”, a method of cross-training achieved through switching the order of exercises and incorporating new and varied movements. Muscle confusion supposedly prevents the body from adapting to exercises over time, resulting in continual improvement without plateaus. P90X comes in 12-targeted workout DVDs to sculpt the entire body. Each DVD is for a specific part of the body. They are entitled Chest and Back; Plyometrics; Shoulders and Arms; Yoga X; Legs and Back; Kenpo X; X Stretch; Core Synergistics; Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps; Back and Biceps; Cardio X; and Ab Ripper X. This program combines a variety of exercise techniques including strength training, cardio, yoga, plyometrics, and stretching. The program consists of a nutri-

Jonathan Bundon busts some moves with P90X. tion guide, fitness plan, calendar and series of DVD videos featuring Horton as instructor assisted by several male and female fitness models who demonstrate a variety of techniques. For workouts that require weights, for example, one of the models demonstrates the exercise using elastic resistance bands. The models also demonstrate some moves at lower and/or higher levels of intensity. P90X provides a fitness test to determine if the program is suitable for an individual. The P90X program cycle lasts 13 weeks, demanding exercise six days per week. The program has three “rotations” or emphases, called classic, lean and doubles, that the individual selects according to their personal goals. Most of the workouts are less than an hour in duration, although the abdominal workout (“Ab Ripper X”) is performed three times per week, after six of the rotating workouts, which adds approximately 15 minutes of exercise to the times in the table provided in the plan. Tyler Deaton, native of Kings Mountain, has done the program twice and had much to say about its results. “The program is not meant for people completely out of shape,” Deaton explained. “To succeed, one needs to be somewhat fit before they attempt the challenge of working hard vigorously six days a week for at least one hour a day. P90X made me feel like I was in the best shape of

It is hard to imagine any youth sport today in which the participants do not physically train for their event. Training is an absolute necessity if participants expect to perform at their highest level. The average amateur golfer, however, tries to buy better performance through clubs, “hot golf balls,” and secrets from golf gurus. Certainly proper equipment and good instruction has its place. But you can’t win the Daytona 500 in a Volkswagen and you can’t make the golf ball respond as you’d like it to if your body can’t generate speed or provide control. So awaken to the reality that your technique will always be limited by your body‘s ability to perform. The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits represent a comprehensive approach to youth wellness and are organized under three categories of physical, emotional and social health. Participants who progress within The First Tee Life Skills Experience will learn age and developmentally appropriate health and wellness behaviors at each level of the curriculum. The First Tee Nine

Healthy Habits were created through a collaboration among The First Tee, ANNIKA Foundation, and the Florida Hospital for Children to promote healthy, active lifestyles for young people. The health habits are a list of nine health and wellness topics presented as a part of The First Tee National School Program and Life Skills Experience, formatted for easy understanding and learning by elementary‐age students and The First Tee of Cleveland County chapter participants. Wellness Activities within The First Tee Life Skills Experience At the various levels of the Life Skills Experience curriculum there are health and wellness activities. • PLAYer level participants are asked to demonstrate good judgment as it relates to healthy behaviors by choosing to properly prepare their bodies through exercise, nutrition and hydration. • Par level participants are asked to set their Personal Par for wellness and physical activity. • Birdie level partici-

pants are asked to use STAR (Stop, Think, Anticipate and Respond) for wellness and physical activity. • Eagle level participants learn “Stay Well for Life” through specific life skills techniques which are delivered to address a Healthy Body, Mind and Heart. Some of the lesson titles include: Building Physical Wellness; Choosing a Healthy Lifestyle; Eat Right, Drink Right; and Personal Wellness Goal Ladder. Physical Activity within the Game of Golf The game of golf is a lifelong physical activity where players walk on average 5‐6 miles per round. For a 150 pound person that carries their clubs, this equates to 350 calories burned per hour, with the average round consisting of 4 hours equates to 1,400 calories burned during the course of a round of golf. Practicing by hitting balls on the driving range equates to 190 calories per hour for the same size person. See NINE on Page 18

The importance of water and human health I’m dying of thirst!” Well, you just might. It sounds so simple. H20. Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen. But this substance better known as water is the most essential element, next to air, to our survival. Water makes up more than two thirds of the weight of the human body, and without it we would die in a few days. The human brain is made up of about 95 percent water; blood is about 82 percent and lungs about 90 percent. A mere 2 percent drop in our body’s water supply can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy shortterm memory, trouble with basic math and difficulty focusing on smaller print, such as a newspaper. (Are you having trouble reading this? Drink up!) Mild dehydration is also one of the most common causes of daytime fatigue. An estimated 75 percent of Americans have mild, chronic dehydration. • Water serves as a lubricant • Water forms the base for saliva • Water forms the fluids that surrounds the joints • Water regulates the body temperature, as the cooling and heating is distributed

through perspiration • Water helps to alleviate constipation by moving food through the intestinal tract and thereby eliminating waste • Water is the best detox agent • Water regulates metabolism In addition to the daily maintenance of our bodies, water also plays a key role in the prevention of disease. According to Dominique Michaud, a researcher from Harvard School of Public Health, drinking eight glasses of water daily can decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45 percent, and bladder cancer by 50 percent, and it can potentially even reduce the risk of breast cancer. We have reached the point where almost all sources of our drinking waters – municipal water systems, wells, lakes, rivers and even glaciers – contain some level of contamination. Even many bottled waters have been found to contain high levels of contamination in addition to plastic chemicals leaching from the bottles. The most important water in existence is Kangen. Kangen is a Japanese word, best translated into English as “Return to Origin,” which means several things when used to describe water.

Kangen water is simply an easier way of stating alkaline, ionized, anti-oxidant, electron rich, restructured, micro clustered, active hydrogen saturated, oxidation reduced, powerful living water. Kangen H20 is trademarked and makes our lives a whole lot easier than having to say all this each time. Kangen’s water molecular formula shifts from H20 to H+OH- in plain, old English: It’s now Living Water again. Kangen water can flush toxins and neutralize acidity in your body. Kangen water is water that has gone through a special electrolysis process that changes the pH of water to alkaline and much, much more. First, it describes water returned to the state in which water was often found in nature before earth became polluted. Second, it implies that it will help return your body to its original condition when you were young. Kangen water is a powerful antioxidant, perhaps more powerful than any single food or vitamin supplement because this water contains active hydrogen that supplies huge amounts of extra electrons to our body. The technology has been approved for its medical benefits by the Japanese Ministry of

Health and Welfare (the Japanese equivalent of the FDA). Kangen water is also known to have a small cluster of 5 to 6 water molecules. As a result of the electrolysis process, it is a super hydrating water. You can taste the difference in your first glass. Tap water is typically 12 to 15 molecules per cluster. That is more than double the size of Kangen water. Small clusters also mean that your body can readily absorb the minerals in this water into your cells in seconds. One of the most important characteristics of Kangen water is the ORP factor. Oxidation reduction potential is a measurement of voltage. When it is measured as a negative millivolt this is life enhancing, (electron rich). This distinguishes it from any other water on the market. The Kangen water machine can produce incredibly functional waters with the ORP below -550mv. Free radicals bond with the hydrogen electrons and are flushed out of the body. and a mat. The nutrition plan, which can be a bit pricey, is composed of three phases. The first 30 days emphasizes higher protein and lower carbohydrates to teach the user the relationship between carbohydrates and energy. Participants then move to the second phase, which increases the percentages of carbohydrates. The third phase is a higher carbohydrate “athlete’s” diet. Users progress through the phases of the diet that coincide with each program change. Each program lasts thirty days. By the end of the third program the user will be in the third phase, or “athlete’s” phase of the diet. “Beyond all the exercises, the hardest part of the program was keeping up with the nutrition plan, its very expensive and difficult to stay committed to it due to the preparations of the meals,” Deaton said. “Overall, the program was an awesome experience and is best to do with a partner, or in my case, my dad (who went from 215 lbs. to 175 lbs.). It was a great way to build a father-son relationship. Accountability rocks!” Deaton commented. “I was able to see and feel results that increased energy levels and overall self-image. I would recommend it to girls or guys of all ages over 14 or 15 that desire to take their workouts to the next level of intensity. In the words of Tony Horton: ‘Do your best, forget the rest.’ ”

From page 9 my life, even more so than when I played soccer and ran cross-country in high school. “Its more than just intense cardio, its also muscle building focused on the body’s core,” Deaton continued. “My favorite exercise days include Chest & Back, Plyometrics, and ‘Ab RipperX’, which is done three times a week on top of the other workout days. Most people, including myself found that the hardest exercise when I first began the program was plyometrics as it is followed by DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) that is pretty intense for the first few weeks.” Plyometrics, often used to improve sports performance, is a workout created to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system. In plyometrics, muscles are expanded and contracted in rapid fire fashion, drawing on the strength, elasticity and innervation of muscles and surrounding tissues to help athletes hit harder, jump higher, run faster and throw farther. P90X routines incorporate the use of resistance bands, a chin bar, dumb bells, push-ups and power stands, Yoga blocks,

By Laurence Kish, MD Each year roughly 400 people die from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning and several thousands more are hospitalized with often serious illness. In fact The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that between 2000 and 2005 more than 200 people died from generator produced carbon monoxide alone. At lower levels of exposure, you may have mild flu-like symptoms which could include dizziness, headaches, nausea, etc. The degree of illness does depend on the individual and age. I had the opportunity to speak with a local Emergency Department physician recently who recalled a case where the entire family was suffering from similar symptoms. This included nausea, headache, fatigue, etc. When the family left the house they seemed to get better over the following hours but upon returning to their house they started to feel poor again. Flu like symptoms without a fever should be a tip off for possible carbon monoxide exposure, according to the Emergency Department physician. At higher levels of carbon monoxide exposure a person could experience vomiting, fall unconscious, and even die. Persons at particularly high risk include unborn babies and small children, as well as those with respiratory problems, chronic heart disease, and anemia. Carbon monoxide is a gas that is found in combustion fumes of all types. Fumes from gas engines, stoves, cars/trucks, generators, water/space heaters, ranges, etc., can contain carbon monoxide. In addition, simply burning charcoal or wood can produce it. Basically carbon monoxide is the result of incomplete burning of substances containing carbon or natural gas. Instead of carbon dioxide being formed, a lack of oxygen allows for carbon monoxide to form. See CARBON MONOXIDE on Page 19

Billy Wease, R.Ph. has 20 years experience in nutritional counseling and has earned a Fellowship Degree in Anti-Aging Medicine.

It’s a fitness craze that has been around for a number of years, going in and out of popularity, but never quite fading from the scene. The craze? Biking, of course! And while it’s not for everybody, it’s just what the doctor ordered for Cherryville native Dr. George Randall. “I’ve been cycling for approximately 10 years on a consistent basis,” he said recently. “I would consider myself an avid cyclist since it is and has been a big part of my exercise routine.” The Kings Mountain chiropractor and family man said he loves getting out and wheeling around. Randall, 46, graduated from Cherryville High School in 1983, attended first Gaston College, then UNC-C, then it was on to Life University in Marietta, GA, where he received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree. He knows a thing or two about health and fitness. “I have practiced in Kings Mountain for the past 19 years,” he said, adding that he began biking to add some variety to his exercise routine and to help avoid any repetitive injuries since running was his primary source of activity at that time. “I chose chiropractic because I have always found the all-natural approach to health care very appealing.” Randall said cycling as a hobby or exercise alternative can be implemented on a minimal budget. “For some, it can be a very expensive pastime depending on how much you choose to get into it. It can cost a minimum of a few hundred dollars for a good quality bike, on up to several thousand dollars for the upper end carbon-framed bikes.” Randall stressed that newcomers should try to resist the urge to buy a bike from the big discount retailers. “It’s true you can pay a lot less, but if the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ was ever true, it would definitely apply to buying a bicycle,” he said, adding that, if possible, new cyclists should always buy from a quality bike shop. There are several reasons for this. “First, a shop quality bike can last

you literally for decades with proper maintenance. Second, the bike shop you purchase from will be very familiar with your brand and can reliably provide for the regular maintenance. “I should also note that as a beginner, you would need to know what type of biking you would primarily be doing so you could get the appropriate type of bicycle; whether it’s a road bike, mountain bike, or a hybrid, they (a bike shop) would be prepared to fill your need with the ideal type and size.” Cycling for the Randalls wasn’t always a family affair though, he said. “I have tried for years to get my wife (Tammy) and kids more into biking, with little success until recently when we all went to ride the popular Virginia Creeper in Damascus, VA.,” he said. “I knew one thing that would attract them to that ride was the fact that the 17 mile trail is almost entirely downhill! Since that ride, my wife has purchased a new bike, and we are all eager to do more riding.” See CYCLING on Page 15

Cycling Continued from Page 14 Dr. Randall said that shortly after he began biking, a friend, Randy Kincaid, encouraged him to start doing triathlons. “Over the years we have participated in 25plus triathlons including a few notable races like ‘The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon’ in San Francisco, and the ‘New York City Triathlon’, all of which are on a noncompetitive level,” Randall noted. A typical ride for Randall may be about 30plus miles. “I always check to make sure my bike is working properly and that I have the tools and materials needed for any repairs. I also take my phone in case of an emergency. Proper attire is also important for comfort and safety.” One of the biggest physical challenges associated with biking Randall often hears from others is discomfort while riding. “I know this has often discouraged many beginners from continuing to ride. Long rides can surely be uncomfortable for the neck, shoulders, hands, and buttocks, but with time, you can usually work through most of these problems,” he said. “A proper fitting bike can also go a long way to improving your enjoyment. There are also additional items you can purchase to help make things easier on you, like padded shorts and gloves.” Randall likes to mountain bike and road

HQ bike, so he has a different bike for each. He said he has further altered his mountain bike to make it more “road friendly” as well as offroad ready. “Again, comfortable, cool clothing and a proper fitting helmet are all a must,” he noted. While Randall often rides alone, for longer rides (done while training) he prefers riding with a partner like his friend Kincaid. He knows it’s safer and “definitely less boring”. As a health care professional, Dr. Randall knows biking is a great healthy exercise option if safety is considered. He said it has some benefits over running, like less pounding on the joints, for example. “Riding in traffic can be risky and you should always be aware of your surroundings,” he noted. “Anyone beginning a new exercise program should always consult with their doctor before starting. Remember to start any new type of exercise slowly and gradually work into it over time. Most exercise-related injuries occur shortly after beginning a new or unfamiliar exercise program.” Randall personally enjoys cycling in the summer over running because, as he said, “... you have a continuous breeze blowing on you.” For the same reason, riding in the winter can be rather uncomfortable when the temperature drops below 50 degrees unless steps are taken to repel the wind, he added. As do most physicians, Dr. Randall be-

lieves they have the most power and responsibility as individuals to improve their patients’ overall health, primarily with proper nutrition and regular exercise. One subject of great important to him is to always wear a helmet when riding. “I was involved in a serious non-vehiclerelated bike accident nine years ago. Even though I was wearing my helmet, I was knocked unconscious and the impact split my helmet down one side,” Randall said. Without his helmet Randall said he is sure he would have suffered a devastating, if not fatal, injury. “I was naive enough at the time to think I would only need a helmet if I was ever struck by a vehicle. My accident happened on a quiet country road with no vehicles in sight.” In remembering the accident, Randall said he remembers briefly going off the lip of the road and attempting to pull back on when his wheel buckled, slamming him onto the road. “To make matters worse, my partner, drafting closely behind me, was unable to react and ended up running into my lower back as I was lying on my side in the road,” he said. “The end result has been two shoulder surgeries as well as surgery on my lower back!” To this day, he feels the result of these injuries on a daily basis. “I often see adults and–even worse–children riding without helmets and I try to take these opportunities to inform others of the

15 need to always wear a helmet,” he said. He hopes that by sharing his story he can help prevent a tragedy. “My kids are always required to wear their helmets whether on bikes, skates, skateboards, or scooters. They will quickly lose their riding privileges if ever caught without it!” Biking can be a fun and safe activity for everyone. “It is also a way to bring the whole family together and enjoy the outdoors and teach the importance of regular physical activity,” he said.

Dentistry is about creating order from disorder “I’ve always been fascinated with the way the body works,” say Dr. Brenton Young, “and so much can be seen just inside the mouth. “Dentistry involves detective work, but solving dental problems is more fun than solving crimes: in the end, we create order out of disorder, taking broken teeth and making them nice again. We make life better for the patient, and that’s a great feeling.” Dr. Young can relate to patients who avoid dental care because of fear. “I grew up afraid of needles, so I made a point of learning to be as gentle as humanly possible,” he says. “It’s important to understand the disease, but nothing is more rewarding than understanding the person.”

Running in the wrong shoe... Continued from Page 5 Because they provide the most cushioning and feel better when you first try them on, people often end up buying neutral or stability shoes. Some people need the extra cushioning provided by a neutral shoe and do well. However, if a person has feet that require additional support (which a motion control shoe provides) their feet will begin to hurt and they will be disappointed with neutral shoes. Most of us attribute how our feet feel to the brand or the quality of shoes we wear. This is true for the width and fit of the shoe, but as mentioned earlier all shoe companies make three types of shoes and each type has a different level of support and cushioning. This explains why your favorite New Balance shoe feels great but another style of New Balance does not. Unfortunately, most shoe stores do not employ sales people who are very knowledgeable about shoes. In an attempt to improve their ability to fit you with the appropriate shoe, some stores use machines or the “wet foot” method (how high your arch is based on your wet footprint). Although this is helpful, it does not account for movement of the entire foot during weight bearing or for the mechanics at the knee, hip and pelvis during ambulation. How do you get into the right shoe? A medical professional with training in the evaluation of foot, ankle, knee, hip and pelvic girdle biomechanics during walking and running, can best determine which shoe you need. Sometimes, though, even the best shoe does not provide enough support. In such cases, the additional support provided by an orthotic may be necessary. An orthotic is a custom made or prefabricated shoe insert that is capable of affecting the mechanics of the lower extremity. The orthotic maintains the foot in a position that minimizes abnormal motion through the foot, which improves biomechanics of the foot and lower extremity. Orthotics can be expensive and when an orthotic is required, it is still necessary to wear the appropriate shoes. With this in mind, before going to the expense of fabricating custom orthotics for our patients, we recommend the appropriate shoes and ask our patients to wear them for a week. Quite often, changing to the right shoe is all that is needed. Cleveland Physical Therapy

Veggies Continued from Page 6 Well, refined foods and saturated fat from animal-based food clogs arteries, causing heart attacks and strokes. Vegan foods don’t do that. And eating concentrated protein like beef, chicken and seafood can actually initiate and feed cancerous tumors; take the meat away and the cancer stops. So if you don’t get your protein from animal sources, where do you get it? Plants – like broccoli, for example. Calorie for calorie, broccoli has more protein than steak (per 100 calories). Most of the calories in meat come from fat, but the calories in green veggies come from protein. If broccoli isn’t your favorite food, black beans, artichokes, pinto beans, spinach, black-eyed peas, almonds, pumpkin seeds and kidney beans also pack a hefty protein punch. OK, so avoiding meat may be healthier, but vegetarians are skinny wimps, right? Trying saying that to UFC ultimate fighting star Mac Danzig. He’s been a strict vegan since 2004 and has earned

HQ respect from his peers as one of the toughest fighters in the world (and has several championship belts to prove it). There are vegan bodybuilders out there, too — true bodybuilders who shun steroids and growth hormones in favor of plant-based micro-nutrients. Robert Cheeke has been a vegan his entire adult life. He’s lean, muscular and sports six-pack abs. Other vegan role models you may recognize include former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson, Olympic track and field gold-medalist Carl Lewis, retired NBA star John Salley, and actors Alec Baldwin and Woody Harrelson. Each of these men has their reasons for choosing a vegan diet, be it athletic dominance, explosive energy, animal rights, or superior health. And every reason makes sense. ### Campbell TC, II TMC. FLU That time of year is coming The seasons are changing. The days are getting cooler and shorter as the fall season approaches. But that’s not the only season approaching. Seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Influenza, or the flu, is a contagious disease that anyone can get. For most people flu symptoms last only a few days and include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and runny or stuffy nose. But, it can become more serious in young children, people aged 65 or older, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions like heart disease. Each year in the United States, an average of up to 20 percent of the population gets the seasonal flu, according to CDC, and about 200,000 people end up in the hospital because of complications. See FLU on Page 18

18

Flu Continued from Page 17 The flu usually comes on suddenly and includes these symptoms: fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and tiredness. The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone six months of age or older. Getting the flu vaccine can protect you from the flu, and may help prevent the spread of flu to others. It takes about two weeks for protection to develop after a flu shot, but it lasts about a year. With the flu season lasting well into March, it makes sense to keep your defenses up and take care of yourself. Other than a flu shot, two of the most effective ways to prevent the flu is to cover your cough and wash your hands often. Cold and flu viruses are spread mainly when you in-

HQ hale droplets released when someone coughs or sneezes. Germs are also spread when you touch a surface that has viruses on it and then touch your nose or mouth. According to the CDC, it is possible for adults to infect someone one day before symptoms develop and up to seven days after becoming sick. Practice prevention to keep yourself and others healthy. Stay home if you are sick. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Use a tissue or the bend of your elbow to avoid contaminating your hands. Minimize hand-tomouth contact and wash your hands frequently. The best method for hand washing is to use soap and water, but when those are not available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer will work. Perhaps the best defense against the cold or flu is a healthy immune system. Remember to eat a diet low in fat, including plenty of fruits and vegetables, exercise and get plenty of rest.

Weight Continued from Page 7 Testosterone levels decline with age, which can contribute to some health problems. Accurate testosterone levels can benefit muscle strength, lean body mass, improved sexual response, improved body composition and most of all protects against cardiovascular disease in both men and women. Men starting in their mid thirties and up should inquire hormone levels with their physician. This backs up my core belief why all weight loss and wellness goals should be reached starting with our inside then moving on to the outside! Carrie Lynch Carolina Family Care

Carbon Monoxide Continued from Page 13 Red blood cells in your body attach to carbon monoxide molecules easier than oxygen. Once this occurs your body’s organs and cells become deprived of oxygen resulting in illness. Because it does not have any odor, color, or taste carbon monoxide can be difficult to detect. Poisoning from carbon monoxide is more common during winter months due to an increase in furnace and generator usage, as well as improperly vented hot water heaters. These are just a few examples of how an individual could become exposed to carbon monoxide. The CDC website has posted information on carbon monoxide exposure prevention (http://www. cdc. gov/co/guidelines. htm): •Do have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year. •Do install a battery-operated carbon monoxide (CO) detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. If the detector sounds leave your home immediately and call 911. If your carbon monoxide detector does sound, do not assume it is a faulty unit or battery. Take the appropriate pre-

cautions and contact your fire department. •Do seek prompt medical attention if you suspect CO poisoning and are feeling dizzy, light-headed, or nauseous. •Don’t use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove, or other gasoline or charcoal-burning device inside your home, basement, or garage or near a window. •Don’t run a car or truck inside a garage attached to your house, even if you leave the door open. •Don’t burn anything in a stove or fireplace that isn’t vented. •Don’t heat your house with a gas oven. If you suspect that you or a family member has been exposed to carbon monoxide you need to go to a well ventilated open area immediately and call 911. If you have access to oxygen such as in a work place situation, 100 percent oxygen should be administered to the victim with a tight fitting mask until emergency services arrive. If the victim has stopped breathing CPR should be initiated. Laurence Kish, MD is a board-certified internal medicine specialist at Kings Mountain Internal Medicine.
