BeachBlast Festival nominated for CBMA Event of the Year The City of Kings Mountain’s Special Events Department announced the nomination of the 2019 BeachBlast Festival for the Carolina Beach Music Awards Event of the Year. BeachBlast was one of six events nominated for this prestigious award. “This nomination speaks to the excellence of leadership from our Special Events Director, Christy Conner,” stated Marilyn Sellers, City Manager. “Starting her career with the City of Kings Mountain in 2001, Christy was promoted in 2017 as the Special Events Director. Her leadership brings energy and enthusiasm to all our events. With her vision and ability to rally a team of staff and volunteers, the BeachBlast Festival has grown to be recognized across the State of NC and the Southeast.” “The Special Events team is honored by this nomination,” stated Christy Conner, Special Events Director. “I would like to express my sincere thanks to our team of staff and volunteers. I am very grateful for our City Council and Administration and their continued support. Through their support and leadership, we have a beautiful state of the art venue to host BeachBlast and other festivals and events. With confidence, I can say that Kings Mountain is on the right path to creating a vibrant entertainment district in Downtown and I’m excited to be a part of it!”

Each year, members of the Carolina Beach Music Awards Association nominate the best in Beach Music entertainment, such as, radio announcers, bands, events, and clubs. After the nominations are announced, members then vote for the official winners of each category. “It is really great that the CBMA has named BeachBlast 2019 as one of the top 6 events in the Southeast as announced on FM 94.9 The Surf.” says Mayor Scott See CBMA, Page 2

NC Voter ID and Max Tax upheld in State Court of Appeals

Catawba Land Trust

A state Court of Appeals p a n e l overturned a lower court ruling on T u e s MOORE day that blocked constitutional amendm e n t s implementing a lower maximum income tax PHILBECK rate and voter ID, measures that North Carolinians' approved at the ballot box in 2018. Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) said Tuesday that it was "a great day for democracy" because North Carolinians' voices in favor of lower tax rates and voter ID were upheld. "We kept the faith in the vote of the people, knowing North Carolina courts should not interfere with their sovereign power to amend our state

The Catawba Nation today announced its support and appreciation of Tuesday's i n t r o d u c - CHIEF HARRIS tion of the Catawba Indian Nation Lands Act (H.R. 8255) in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman G.K. Butterfield (NC) was joined in introducing the bipartisan bill by Congressman Jim Clyburn (SC), Congressman William Timmons (SC), Congressman Dan Bishop (NC), Congressman Joe Cunningham (SC), Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC), Congressman David Price (NC) and Congressman Joe Wilson (SC). The bipartisan bill reaffirms the actions earlier this year of the Department of the Interior, following a thorough, years-long review, in taking 17 acres of land into trust status in Cleveland County, North Carolina, for the Catawba Nation. constitution," Speaker Moore said Tuesday. "It's a great day for democracy that our citizens can have confidence their vote on critical issues for our economy and our elections systems will count and not be overridden by activist courts." A lower maximum tax rate of 7% for North Carolina families and businesses in the state constitution was part of a larger tax relief plan enacted by the Republican-led General Assembly throughout the 2010s that increased takehome pay for working people. The state's voter ID constitutional amendment was supported by a majority of voters, voter ID enjoys broad bipartisan support across the country, and North Carolina joins a strong majority of states who have some form of voter ID. According to the Director of Elections at Cleveland County Board of Elections Clifton Philbeck, “The recent court ruling said that the General Assembly had the right to place the constitutional amendment on the ballot. The injunction that put the photo ID law on hold is still in effect. A photo ID will not be required to vote the fall, unless the injunction is lifted.”

On Tuesday, September 15, Angie Shugart was robbed and shot in broad daylight at a gas station on Lawyers Road in Charlotte. She was hospitalized at Atrium Main in critical condition with gunshot wounds to her neck and face. The gunshots left devastating injuries and dozens of surgeries ahead, the family was told. Angie and her partner, Jimbo Conner, have a 6-year old son. When Jimbo visited Angie on Saturday at the hospital, she was awake and able to use a communication board. Via a phone call, their son was able to tell his mother he loves her as Jimbo held the phone to her ear. For three days, the hospital had kept Angie sedated due to the

severity of her injuries. Upon hearing the news that Angie had been shot, Jimbo’s sister, Christy King, sprang into action to help the family. Christy also started the Angie Shugart Personal Emergency Fundraiser of Facebook. Angie took care of Jimbo’s business for him. He is disabled, and Angie was his helper in life and business. Their car is considered a crime scene and was impounded and by the police. Unfortunately, Jimbo’s wallet was in the car, leaving him without identification or bank card. This has been both an emotional and financial struggle for their family. For the next few weeks

Jimbo will not be able to work due to caring for their 6-year old and traveling back and forth to the hospital to visit Angie. In the meantime, bills still need to be paid. King shared, “I will be able to pay his bills out of this account, so he doesn't have to worry about it. Anything you give will go 100% towards bills, groceries, parking fees, medical needs for their family.” “This has hit them hard and Angie did not deserve this random act of violence. If the Lord lays it on your heart to help in this way, please help but most importantly, please pray for complete healing of Angie,” Christy asked.

Alliance Bank & Trust moves to Shelby Road By Loretta Cozart On September 8, Alliance Bank & Trust opened its doors at their new location at 1113 Shelby Road in Kings Mountain. For more than a decade, the bank maintained a presence in downtown. “We enjoyed being in downtown Kings Mountain but decided to move from a convenience standpoint,” said Dan Boyd, President and CEO of the bank. “We had the chance to purchase

the old credit union location and couldn’t pass up the opportunity. There is plenty of parking and two drive through lanes. With COVID-19, that means a lot to our customers. And the new locations has great visibility.” Just 16 years earlier, On September 8, 2004, Alliance Bank & Trust opened for business after raising over $11.7 million and being granted a State Bank Charter. The bank currently has four branches,

two in Gastonia, one in Kings Mountain and one in Shelby. Alliance Bank & Trust prides itself in being local, since all decision makers live nearby. These are the lands of not just our ancestors, but also the hundreds of Catawba citizens that reside there today,” Harris said. Harris noted that it is not unusual for Congress to reaffirm land-trust decisions by the Interior Department. The “Gun Lake Trust Land Reaffirmation Act” from 2014 and the “Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Land Affirmation Act” from 2019 are recent examples of such an action.

OPINION

TODAY’S QUOTE:

Wisdom is found only in truth. – Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Pieces of Why do hamburgers Kings Mountain History taste good?

When we think of the year 2020 in years to come, what will we remember? Obviously, most people will equate this year with COVID-19, but that is only part of the LORETTA story. COZART People looking back at this time 100 years from now will be viewing it from totally a different perspective. They won’t realize the hardships we faced, at least not in the same way we do. COVID-19 will become a paragraph in textbooks that our grandchildren and great-grandchildren study. This pandemic has been horrific. It has taken so many lives, many of whom were vulnerable due to age or health issues. In the US, nearly 200,000 people have been lost. Globally, those numbers exceeded 958,000. Almost a million people have died. That is a sobering thought. Our nation’s leaders call the virus the silent enemy. They refer to our situation as if we are at war with COVID19. But we can’t see this enemy and that makes it a difficult concept to wrap our minds around. Some will tell you the virus doesn’t exist, that it is the brainchild of those who wish to control us. I prefer to err on the side of caution, wear a mask, wash my hands, and keep a social distance. I don’t want to miss seeing my grandchildren grow up or lose a family member due to my own thoughtlessness, so I’ll be inconvenienced. Future generations won’t understand the hardships Americans endured as we sheltered-in-place and stayed at home as our jobs and businesses withered and our economy slowed to a crawl. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 14.7% were unemployed in April of 2020. Those numbers have since decreased, but that doesn’t mean much to those still unemployed. Our nation has spent seven months dealing with a pandemic. We missed holidays, anniversaries, birthdays. We’ve missed time and events together that we can never get back. Most peo-

ple look forward to socializing with family and friends and the pandemic has robbed us of those opportunities. We’ve been told not to wear masks. And then we were told we must wear one. Even those who understand infectious diseases didn’t agree. Most agree now: wear a mask. We watched politicians tell us what to do, only to realize they aren’t following their own advice. Even the pandemic has been politicized. I hope that those who study these viruses learn a great deal from this pandemic and establish protocols for future threats. Something good has to come of this. But I have to keep perspective in light of all we have endured. Humanity will survive. A vaccine will be developed, we will be immunized, and we’ll move on. In a year, will I even be thinking about COVID-19 or will my attention be diverted to another issue? I’ve learned thought this pandemic that an individual’s attention span lasts about six weeks, at best. It is sad. Probably the most bizarre part of the pandemic has been the household items we’ve had trouble finding. Who would have imagined toilet paper and paper towels would be so scarce? Even now, Lysol products are hard to find. We’ve learned through all this that our food chain isn’t as strong as we thought it to be, especially when certain meats and vegetable were in such short supply. We need to take note of this and make corrections. My younger daughter summed up this year saying, “I wish I had a copyright on the phrase, ‘Hindsight is 2020,’ because I just want this year to end.” When she said that, I had to smile. It is all about perspective, I guess. Most of us just want to get beyond COVID-19. I recently learned I’m going to be a grandma for a second time. That gives me hope that we will soon be referring to this pandemic in the past-tense. I just need to be patient a little longer. I want to believe that. I have to believe that. Life goes on.

extreme moderation mode. His words were, “You don’t need a heart attack.” Burgers are good sources of protein, iron and vitamin B-12, but they come with a lot of problems, according to nutrition experts – particularly the fatty meat, sugary ketchup and refined grain buns. A diet of burgers will lead to obesity. My double burger had about 900 calories. The saturated fat is detrimental to your heart. My double burger had about 22 grams of saturated fat or 108 percent of my daily value. Add to this also 172 milligrams of cholesterol, or 57 percent of the daily value based on a 2,000 calorie a day diet. A one-patty burger can have 258 milligrams of sodium. If you are battling high blood pressure you don’t want a lifestyle of eating hamburgers. Why do hamburgers taste so good? Because they are bad for you. But, hey old friend, surely, we can eat one occasionally. So, enjoy one, but then wait awhile before your next one.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR To The Editor:

Thanks to President Trump, his administration and the North Carolina General HASTINGS Assembly, the coronavirus pandemic did not mark the end of North Carolina’s economic renaissance. If not for President Trump’s aggressive and rapid economic relief initiatives and the General Assembly’s continuing efforts to enhance economic security, our state’s economy would not have managed to endure the COVID19 pandemic and we would not be quickly regaining the losses that occurred during the economic contraction brought on by the pandemic and vague gubernatorial orders. Business Administration through the Paycheck Protection Program; tens of thousands of North Carolina businesses received billions of dollars of loans. These helpful loans are forgivable if the funds are properly used for payroll and allowed expenses. The people benefitted from the collaboration between the White House and Congress as well. Over a million North Carolina jobs benefitted from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). Through the U.S. Treasury and Internal Revenue Service, hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians received economic impact payments, totaling roughly $8 billion in economic relief. To combat the economic impact of the coronavirus, President Trump, allies in Congress, and the North Carolina General Assembly replaced

job-killing regulations and higher taxes with less red tape and lower taxes. The Trump administration’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) and the North Carolina General Assembly’s tax reductions that started when Republicans won control of the General Assembly are benefitting everyone. According to numerous sources, Joe Biden championed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). That agreement killed thousands of North Carolina manufacturing jobs. President Trump’s USMCA trade deal, along with our focus on economic security, will help bring back jobs to the state and help us improve our prospects for economic freedom and security. OUCH (Part 4 of the “Offense” Series) “The preacher stepped on my toes with their sermon. I don’t like it,” some have said. My response is don’t be angry at the messenger. Take it up with the one who sent the message. In fact, I strongly encourage you to bring your Bible to church and follow along while someone is teaching a biblical message. Then, go home and study the word of God for yourself. First, DANYALE PATTERSON pray and ask God to give you understanding and wisdom. The Holy Spirit will reveal the truth. Then, get a concordance, a Bible dictionary, a Hebrew-Greek lexicon, and a notebook. Sit down with your Bible and prayerfully study the word of God. Many methods of study are on the internet or in books and show how to study the Word. A few are the PRECEPT, the ACTS, and the SOAP methods. OFFENDED BY GOD I think people have a misunderstanding of what the Bible is and its purpose. Apostle Paul admonishes in 2 Timothy 3:1617, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” In addition, Jesus - who is the living Word, of-

fended many people by what he said and did. In John 6:61 & 63 Jesus asks, “Does this offend you? The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” Like a parent that loves their children unconditionally, God has established rules and commandments for our safety, healthy relationships, and for our good. Similarly, like children who think they know more than their parents but have a lot to learn, we adults sometimes think we know more than God about how we should live. However, the Creator of the Universe really does know what is best for us. Romans 9:20a states, “But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God?” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Lord you are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. For you created all things, and by your will, they exist and were created. I acknowledge that you made me. I didn’t make you. Forgive me for being offended by a scripture I didn’t like, or a sermon given by your servant you sent to correct me. Help me to realize that your laws are not burdensome, but are for my benefit. Forgive me for not spending time with you by reading and studying your Word. Please give me an understanding as I study your Word. I have ears to hear what your Holy Spirit speaks. In Jesus’ name - Amen.” Danyale Patterson is co-founder of Enlighten Ministries, a 501c3 organization with her husband Brandon Patterson. KMHS wins Wells Fargo Cup with best mark in Big South Kings Mountain High won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 2019-2020 Wells Fargo Conference Cup Championship in the Big South 3A Conference. The Wells Fargo Conference Cup is a companion to the Wells Fargo Cup and recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic perfor-

mances within individual conferences. Wachovia, and now Wells Fargo, has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980. In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Kings Mountain finished with 122 points in

same time Clover will be hosting Wren. The other two nearby South Carolina teams, York and Blacksburg, will be on the road. York takes on Indian Land and Blacksburg battles St. Joseph’s Catholic. Any local fans attending the games should be prepared for social distancing, masks and other COVID restrictions that may be required by the South Carolina schools.

North Carolina high school football teams will be waiting until winter 2021 to play their 2020 schedule, but area fans chomping at the bits to see some action can drive a short distance to Gaffney and Clover Friday night for their season openers. According to their schedules on MaxPreps Gaffney, with former Kings Mountain High’s Kobe Paysour at wide receiver, will be hosting Boiling Springs at 7:30 p.m. At the

DAR celebrates Constitution Week By Libby Putnam

Paul and Lucille Williams are shown with Oakland Raider great Mickey Marvin at the 1993 Kings Mountain Sports Hall of Fame ceremony. Marvin was guest speaker at the banquet held at Kings Mountain Community Center.

Touchdown Club launches 2020 membership drive The Kings Mountain Touchdown Club is kicking off its annual membership drive and is urging all fans of Mountaineer sports to join as soon as possible. The club began its 14th year in July but delayed its membership drive while waiting for direction regarding athletic events at Kings Mountain High. Currently, the NCHSAA plan is to postpone and abbreviate the athletic seasons with some sports beginning in November and others in 2021. The club supports 26 athletic programs at the high school. Money from club membership is used for meals, travel, uniforms and other necessities. President David Brinkley urges club members – and others who would like to become members – to give gen-

erously as the pandemic could make the athletic department needs greater than ever. “Currently, there will be limited attendance, no concessions and limited parking,” he noted. “This is a substantial amount of revenue that our high school depends on to support the athletic programs. For those who have joined in the past, please consider moving up a level in membership. If you have never joined, we would love to have you.” Over the past 14 years, the club has tried to make a difference in athletes and facilities, Brinkley noted. “We need everyone’s help to accomplish the needs of our athletes,” he said. “It is our plan to continue to host four meals and review the football game films at no cost for members and guests (no children). All meetings

will be held in the field house community room. This will be determined by our governor when we are allowed to meet in larger groups.” When and if attendance is allowed by the governor, Brinkley said parking passes will be available. The club offers the following memberships: First down club - $100. Second down club - $200. Third down club - $300. Fourth down club - $500. Coaches club - $1,000 and up. Brinkley asks that membership dues be in by October 31. Make your tax-deductible donation payable to Kings Mountain Touchdown Club and mail to PO Box 2017, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. Provide an email address to help the club with mailing costs.

Carraway encouraged the DAR to make a resolution designating September 17-23 as Constitution Week. DAR Members adopted the resolution on April 21, 1955. When members of the United States Congress received the resolution, they initiated a discussion on June 7, 1955 that resulted in Senator William F. Knowland of California presenting a resolution to observe Constitution Week. After the passage of the resolution by both Houses of Congress, President Eisenhower issued a proclamation on August 19, 1955 to celebrate Constitution Week. The celebration was so successful that Senator Knowland spearheaded a move to have the President designate September 17-23 annually as Constitution Week. The resolution was signed into Public Law

Gov. Cooper announces millions for high-speed internet L a s t week Governor Roy Cooper announced nearly $40 million in funding for NC GOVERNOR Student COOPER Connect, a new partnership created to address internet connectivity gaps that are a barrier to remote learning for many North Carolina students. When school resumed in August, superintendents estimated that at least 100,000 students still lacked a reliable internet connection at home. Many North Carolina students are currently attending school remotely and need reliable internet access to be able to connect with their teachers and access their lessons. Students who are attending school onsite may also need internet access at home to be able to complete assignments. “Long before COVID-19, expanding access to highspeed internet has been a top priority for my administration, and this pandemic has made the need even more urgent,” said Governor Cooper. “NC Student Connect will make critical investments in high speed internet access and remote learning that will help students, health care and businesses in our state.” Today’s NC Student Connect investment includes: • $30 million to distribute 100,000 wireless high speed hot spots for students to connect with their remote learning classes. • $8 million to create accessible sites in convenient locations across the state such as school parking lots, municipal areas, and state parks, museums and historic sites. These NC Student Connect sites will provide free high-speed internet for students to connect to the Internet to download lessons and complete assignments offline. • $2 million for educator professional development, parent training and student involvement in a spectrum of activities that go into effective remote learning. More than 1,300 educators from rural North Carolina already participated in a virtual conference focused on remote learning to help them be better prepared to teach throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

• NC Student Connect is a partnership across state government including the Department of Information Technology (DIT), the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR), Governor Cooper’s Hometown Strong initiative and the NC Business Committee for Education (NCBCE), an educational nonprofit in the Governor’s Office. These and other agencies have already worked to build partnerships to help leverage public investments to increase internet access in underserved communities. Purchasing began before Labor Day and thousands of hot spots will be shipped to school systems this week and will continue throughout the month. “This announcement illustrates the state’s unwavering commitment in connecting all our students and all of NC,” said DIT Acting Secretary Thomas Parrish. “There’s no greater action than investing in our children, our future world changers. We are grateful to our private partners, and all those who are assisting in this effort; our tomorrow says thank you.” “As a parent with a child that is remote learning at home, I can testify to the urgent need for devices with high speed connectivity,” said DNCR Secretary Susi Hamilton. “As a leader in State government, I can answer the Governor’s call to help school children by lending them devices through our State Library and add to their learning experience through outdoor and cultural programming that this department offers.” “Today’s actions significantly advance Governor Cooper’s commitment to quality, accessible highspeed internet for every North Carolina school district. Our Remote Learning Working Group continues to produce meaningful solutions for our most marginalized students. The time is now for bold, innovative, and collaborative solutions that deliver high-speed internet to every North Carolina home,” said Jeremy Collins, Director of Innovative Connectivity with Hometown Strong. "Google is proud to work with our state, local, and corporate partners to provide innovative connectivity solutions—such as our Rolling Hotspots program in North Carolina—to help students access Wi-Fi. NC-

BCE's Remote Learning Working Group is thrilled that the state will invest in the NC Student Connect Program and provide professional development for educators as part of a collective effort to make it possible for more students to engage in school work remotely,” said Lilyn Hester, Head of External Affairs - Southeast, Google, who serves as vice chairwoman of NCBCE and Chairwoman of the NCBCE Remote Learning Working Group. Initial private sector investments in remote learning

and NC Student Connect include, AT&T, Duke Energy Foundation, Fidelity Investments, Google, Smithfield Foundation, Verizon Foundation, and Wells Fargo Foundation. During last month’s city council meeting, Ron Humphries of Sharon Drive addressed the board on this same issue pointing out, “In Kings Mountain we have many students in low-income households that cannot afford internet access. As it is often the case, it is the students from less advantaged households that will be most

adversely affected, thereby widening the achievement gap.” “In Kings Mountain, we have many students in low-income households that cannot afford internet access. Although Cleveland County Schools has placed Hot Spots at schools for parking lot connection, we have many students in circumstances that make it difficult for them to get there. Single-parent homes, work schedule conflicts, lack of transportation are just a few possible reasons,” he pointed out.

“We have learned during Comprehensive Use Plan discussions, to become a competitive 21st-century city, we need to connect our communities by providing a citywide wireless broadband network,” he said. “Our new marketing brand is Living Elevated. We have the opportunity to elevate and put forth the best of our energies and skills to help meet the need of our at-risk students by providing them free WiFi. Let’s make it happen for our most valuable asset, our children.”
