Memorial Day is more than the first unofficial beginning of summer with pool openings, cookouts and a holiday from work, speakers reminded the crowd at Monday's 10 a.m. ceremony in Veterans Park of Mountain Rest Cemetery. It's a day of reverence and renewal of patriotism, service and sacrifice. A stark reminder that our country is still at war, the day is not only a solemn remembrance of those heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice but a day to "celebrate the memory," said Lt. Col. Maury Williams in his keynote address.

“We should thank God (on Memorial Day) that such men (who died in battle) lived.” - General George Patton Commander of the Recruiting and Retention Battalion for the N.C. National Guard headquartered in Raleigh, Williams is a decorated soldier of 27 years. Unemployment rate now, lowest it’s been in four years

They worshipped in a brush arbor 200 years ago and their first house of worship, "the little log church in the woods" in 1812 was of logs and crude handmade benches. Sunday, the 176 members of El Bethel United Methodist Church will celebrate the church's 200th anniversary at a 10:45 a.m. worship service. Bishop Larry Goodpaster, of the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference, will fill the pulpit and offer congratulations to a church congregation which has grown not only in numbers but occupies a beautiful sanctuary, fellowship building, playground, and adjoining cemetery, a landmark for the community. The worship service will include special music followed by a picnic lunch at noon. At 1 p.m. the congregation will open the cornerstone which was last opened 50 years ago. Cleveland County's unemployment rate fell to 9.8 percent in April, the first time in four years the county has been below 10 percent. Although above the state-wide rate of 9.4% (seasonally adjusted and 9.1% non-seasonally adjusted) the jobless rate showed a full percentage point drop from March. "Great news," says county commissioner Ronnie Hawkins. Freddie Harrill, West Regional Liaison for US Senator Kay Hagan (NC) emailed county officials Tuesday "Good Work Y'all." Dale Carroll, NC Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary, said that the number of workers employed (not seasonally adjusted) increased in April by 14,542 to 4,212,226 while those unemployed decreased 24,714 to 421,197. Since April 2011 the number of workers unemployed decreased 42,802, wile those employed increased 35,770. Thirty-two counties were at or below the state's non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 9.1%. Unemployment rates fell in 93 of the state's 100 counties over the month, increased in three counties and remained the same in four counties. Unemployment rates decreased in all 14 Metropolitan Statistical areas for the second consecutive month. JOBLESS, 6A

Bill Lovelace GROVER James William “Bill” Lovelace, 89, resident of Grover and recently of Summit Place in Kings Mountain, peacefully passed away May 27, 2012 at Hospice House of Kings Mountain. He was born in Cleveland County to the late William Greenberry and Lula Allen Lovelace and was also preceded in death by brothers, Sylvester, Chivous, Roscoe, Sidney and Frank Lovelace and sister, Marsilla Proctor. He was a mechanic and ret i r e d f r o m Kings Mount a i n Mica. He was a faithf u l member of Fist Baptist Church of Grover and enjoyed spending time with his family and working in his garden. Harris Funeral Home Lib Plonk Mercer ALEXANDRIA, VA Elizabeth (Lib) Plonk Mercer, 90, was gracious, spirited, generous, and a friend to everyone. She enjoyed travel, theatre, antiques, books, swimm i n g a n d chocolate. The daughter of Rufus Grier and Grace Berry Plonk, Lib grew up in Kings

Mountain. She was a beautiful young woman, interested in drama and the arts. She attended the Plonk School of Creative Arts, starred in several high school and college plays, and won competitive reading awards. In high school, she was voted “best looking” in her senior class. She attended Virginia Intermont and Lenoir Rhyne Colleges, graduating in 1943 with a degree in primary education. Working with children was one of her joys, and she taught elementary school in North Carolina for 5 years. Lib and her husband Jim met in Kings Mountain in 1939, and were married August 4th 1943. As an Army wife at assignments in the United States and Germany, Lib volunteered for women’s club and chapel activities, and for her daughter’s school functions. After settling in Alexandria, VA in 1969, she was a member of the Army Officers’ Wives’ Club of the Greater Washington Area, Vienna Newcomers’ and the DAR. She also held several offices and chair positions in the Quartermaster Wives’ Club, including president. Lib’s faith was a very important part of her life. She was a member of the Ft. Myer Chapel congregation for over 40 years, where she attended Sunday School and Bible Study, and served as a member of the Parish Council. She also coordinated the chapel Meals on Wheels program, chapel hostesses, and an annual cookie drive for D.C. area soldiers who worked Christmas holidays. Lib was a passionate bridge player. She learned to play in college, and later became a member of the American Contract Bridge League, earning her Life Master points at a very early age. She and her partners won at local, regional and national levels. Lib loved spending her summers at Lake Montonia with family and childhood friends. Her grandfather was one of the builders of the lake, and she and her husband Jim own a cabin there. She was a member of the Kings Mountain First Presbyterian Church and an avid supporter of the Kings Mountain Little Theatre. Lib passed away at her home in Alexandria, VA on Monday, May 14, 2012 of congestive heart failure. She was preceded in death by her older brother Hank Plonk, her younger sister Lenora “Nook” Plonk Lackey, and her niece Libby Lackey Powell. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, retired Army Colonel Jim Mercer, her daughter Peggy Mercer of Alexandria, VA, her brother, R.G. Plonk, Jr. and his wife Frances of Shelby, her nephew Robert Lackey who is living in Dallas, TX, and her nephew Tim Powell and grandnieces April and Stephanie Powell of Lawndale. Lib’s life was celebrated on Tuesday, July 31 at 11 a.m. at the Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel in Arlington, VA. Interment was in Arlington National Cemetery following the service. Visitation was at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria, VA from 4 until 7 p.m. on Monday, July 30, 2012. Ski boat catches fire at Moss Lake A ski boat idling near a dock on Moss Lake erupted in fire Saturday evening. Firefighters from Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department put out the blaze. No one was injured in the incident. It was the first time the boat had been put in the water this year. Firemen said two men and a woman were inside but while the boat was idling they saw flames come up from underneath the engine and attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. WRECKS MAY 18: Officer B M. Black said that John Montgomery of Blacksburg, SC, operating a 1998 Ford and Angela Jessup, 103 Country Meadows Lane, operating a 2002 Jeep, were traveling South on NC 216. Jessup slowed to turn left into Body Junction and then decided to make a right turn into the parking area on the right side of the road. The two vehicles collided as Montgomery went to pass Jessup which caused a collision with a parked 2003 Pontiac owned by Kenneth Forrest McDonald, 1000 Oak Grove Road. Property damages were estimated at $3,000. MAY 20: Officer B. M. Black said that a parked 2003 Ford owned by Tiffney Hutchens, 109 George Lewis Road, was damaged by a hit and run driver in the parking lot of Food Lion on East King Street. MAY 22: Officer Lee Whittington said that Colin Sutherland, of Lake Wylie, SC, operating a 2001 Buick on I-85 South, said he was “dozing off” at the wheel, swerved his vehicle, hit a guardrail, and then the rear trailer of the tractor trailer truck operated by Robert Fred of Thomasville, Ga. Property damages were estimated at $5,350. MAY 23: Officer Penny Fulton said that a parked 2001 Mitsubishi owned by Kenya Phaengkhamhak, 114 Keith Ave.,was damaged in the parking lot of Dollar Tree. KMHS final ceremonies begin Sunday Commencement exercises will begin Sunday, June 3 for the 335-member Kings Mountain High School Class of 2012 with baccalaureate services at Barnes Auditorium at 7 p.m. Graduation will begin at 8 p.m. at John Gamble Football Stadium. Seniors will participate in both programs. The 2012 graduating class is one of the largest in the history of the school.

Rev. James Lockridge, pastor of Second Baptist Church, will deliver the baccalaureate sermon. Students participating on the program will be Class President Elizabeth Baker, who will give the welcome; Carolina Baker who will give the invocation; Isaac Pearson who will read from the Old Testament; Davis Crawford who will read from the Gospels; Kylee Wideman who will read

Small Town Main Street Coordinator Sherry Adams told the crowd that economic development is about adding value and creating profit in the form of jobs, sales, taxes and property value. "Organization is the vehicle by which people come together to identify areas of common interest and decide strategies for moving forward," she said. "Promotion involves defining an image for the downtown and marketing that to people within and beyond the community. Design represents the physical image as well as the manner in which downtown functions,

both publicly and privately. Economic restructuring is the acknowledgment that the market for downtown has changed and we need to understand the forces of change and what that means for future development." In September 2011, a team from the NC Department of Commerce's Urban Development Division visited Bessemer City in a day-long community wide assessment. They interviewed downtown stakeholders, toured the city and met in an open forum with the public. Groups of volunteers formed to set and tackle goals on reviving downtown Bessemer City. Be-

Sibley, Hamrick earn Travel Marketing Professional certification ATLANTA - Jackie Sibley, executive director of Tourism and Adrian Hamrick, marketing and communications director of the Cleveland County Chamber, earned certification as “Travel Marketing Professionals” (TMP) after completing the three-year program of the Southeast Tourism Society (STS) Marketing College. Jackie and Adrian were two of 78 new TMPs recognized at the STS spring meeting in Tunica, Miss. STS Marketing College started in 1992, and 706 people have earned TMP certification. The STS Marketing College is a professional development program that for one week each summer turns the facilities of North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega, Ga., into a laboratory to teach tourism marketing.

Instructors are working professionals in the travel industry such as convention and visitors bureau executives, public relations practitioners, sales and marketing consultants and research experts. Tourism ranks as the first, second or third-largest industry in the 12 STS states that stretch from Virginia to Louisiana. Course topics include special events marketing, media relations, tourism advertising, vacation research, crisis management, heritage tourism and community/rural tourism. After the classroom work, students also must complete a project that relates to their employment. The newest group of TMPs raised enough to fund nine scholarships for future STS Marketing College students.

The Bessemer City Small Town Main Street Committee’s mission is to create a downtown environment promoting the revitalization of a healthy, thriving, profitable downtown economy utilizing the National Main Street Center’s Four-Point Approach as tools for implementing the vision.

Ward 3 Councilman Tommy Hawkins has a green thumb. More than one really. Drive by the handsome home of Tommy and Kay Hawkins at 905 Woodside Drive and enjoy a beautiful view you won't soon forget. There's an American flag out front, three water fountains, red-painted rocks, and one of his trademark birdhouses. And bushes and bushes of knock out roses and other plants in full bloom. Hawkins works in his yard 5-6 hours a day and it shows. Perfectly manicured lawns that resemble carpet under your feet. Flowering plants and shrubs that local garden clubbers will recognize easily: exotic geraniums, day lilies, petunias, hydrangeas, lantana, salvia, red celosia, and more. yellow knock out roses at least three times. The 100-foot-wide yard with white fences dotting both back and sides is a gardener's dream. Hawkins spends time perfecting the grass on his front and back lawns and sides and the professional appearance he gives it with expertise at cutting and trimming. "He does it all," says his proud wife. Hawkins got his green thumb when he and his wife built their home on Woodside Drive 13 years ago. "We moved in Memorial Day weekend 13 years ago," said Mrs. Hawkins. Kay Baity and Tommy Hawkins have been married 48 years and were high school sweethearts. They have thee daughters: Zena Johnson of Kings Mountain, Kim Arenas of New York and Tonya Carroll of Pawleys Island, SC; and five grandchildren: Steven Allen, Harrison Johnson, John Hawkins Arenas, Isabel Arenas and Claudia Carroll. "I admit that it takes a lot of work and patience," says Tommy of his yard project. His wife agrees. "Tommy takes pride in the yard and enjoys it," she says. A new study shows that starting screening for diabetes between the ages of 30 and 45 would prevent a significant number of heart attacks, deaths, and diabetes-related health complications and add years of healthy living for people in the U.S. In the study, researchers used information from a representative sample of the U.S. population to create a simulated population of 325,000 people aged 30 without diabetes and then used a computer model to compare eight diabetes screening methods vs. no screening. The results showed that compared with no diabetes screening, all of the diabetes screening strategies: Reduced the number of heart attacks (39 heart attacks prevented per 1,000 people screened); Prevented diabetesrelated complications (3-9 events prevented per 1,000 people screening); Added 93-194 additional healthy life years per 1,000 people screened Most screening strategies prevented diabetes-related deaths (2.5 deaths prevented per 1,000 people screened.)

Mrs. Hawkins' first office job was at Elmer Lumber Company in 1964 and then in the offices of Spectrum Textured Fibers before joining her husband working for a food brokerage company where they traveled together 13 months. They are active members of First Wesleyan Church. "I enjoy being a councilman," says first term city commissioner Tommy Hawkins. "This is my home and I work for all of Kings Mountain," he said. He is active on the board of Mauney Memorial Library and on a special mayoral ad hoc committee to finalize plans for a major water project to run a new line from Moss Lake to town and make major water plant improvements. He says he's real interested in progress of updating the T.J. Ellison Water Treatment Plant. The late Mr. Ellison, a former Ward 3 commissioner, was a mentor of Mr. Hawkins. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Hawkins, Tommy is one of 12 children. His father was a city policeman. Obviously Tommy Hawkins likes what he does and does what he likes.

OPINION Front Porch Music By Ron Isbell

Memorial Day When my sons were younger our weekends in Rusty Springs often included two pretty special guests heck, they were almost family - as we loaded up the boat for an afternoon on the lake or loaded the van for an afternoon of hiking at the state park. Colin Bird was one of Trevor's best friends. And, at 34 years old, still is, I guess. Of course, Trevor collects friends like two-year-olds do dirt. Even though Trevor moved east from Rusty Springs to settle near Knoxville, TN and Colin moved west to Hollywood (yep, California) they still meet every year or two in far-flung places like New York to reconnect. Colin was also special to me because his dad was. What a mind! Conversations with Dan were always meaningful but with a light enough side to keep them entertaining. He was a preacher that never preached. He always talked with me, not to me. Part of the reason, I guess, he and Elaine raised three such fine sons. But this week, it's Jason's buddy, Charlie Lamb, that's on my mind. Tom and Shelly Lamb bought our house when we built a new one just 200 yards, maybe less, across the pasture from them. Charlie and Jason naturally spent a lot of time together. Their personalities meshed like gears in a Swiss watch. Neither seemed to be afraid of much of anything, and that's not necessarily a good thing for a couple of 10-year-olds exploring Rusty Springs. Charlie was always ready for a good time. The first in the water when I tossed the tube out the back of the boat. On the four wheeler at every opportunity. Only one time did Charlie's bravado fail him, but it burned a Kodak moment in my brain that 20 years has not erased. We had gone to Six Flags for it's version of Scarowinds Halloween event. I'd followed four boys around most of the day by the time we made it to the Tunnel of Terror. Charlie, predictably, was the first to jump into the blackness. Even Jason had to be convinced. Me? I figured I had too many years left with these guys to risk chickening out at this point. For the next few minutes (seemed like 12 hours, 23 minutes and 14 seconds to me), Charlie prodded, taunted, poked and pulled the rest of us past all kinds of macabre sights. He laughed

at "guts" spilling from a patient on an operating table, at a mad lumberjack waving a chain saw at our heads, ghosts and ghouls. He was in his element and having a ball. No fear. All bravado, but he backed it up. He never flinched. We finally made it to the last bend in the tunnel and a little light shined in from the exit. About 20 feet to go and our eyes had adjusted to the light. We could see all too well. Charlie was dancing around and poking a little fun at the "scaredy-cats" he was with. And we could see all too well, too, when one of the actors stepped out of the dark sidelines and tapped Charlie on the shoulder. He hit the ground flat on his belly, arms splayed wide, no evidence of breathing, all in the blink of an eye (maybe less). But he recovered in something like 1.5 seconds, jumped to his feet and strutted to the exit to wait on the rest of us. That's the Charlie I love to remember. It's just hard to associate that impish face with Pvt. Charles Lamb who died along with other members of his unit on a Middle Eastern dirt road as their convoy was blown up. Bravado had matured into bravery. That touch of cockiness that peeked through his pre-teen personality had mellowed to confidence. And the word "duty" covered it all. This time it wasn't an actor and a tap on the shoulder. It was someone who hated Americans enough to kill and an IED to accomplish his goal. There would be no opportunity to hop up and strut away. I'm guessing this time he wouldn't have done that anyway. Given a second chance I know his enemy would have paid a price. Charlie was just one of millions of American heroes that were honored Monday. Millions who gave their lives so we, and now others around the world, can live free. When a town as small as Rusty Springs loses one of its own in war a hero isn't just born, he's honored. Charlie was no exception. Hundreds of friends and neighbors and classmates and family joined perfect strangers in lining the highway as he came home. In one sense Charlie was gone. In another, he'll never leave. As for me and anyone else who knew Charlie, we'd selfishly want our hero back. At least for one more trip through the Tunnel of Terror.

Redefining our role in KM The Mountaineer Partnership, Inc. is on a quest to redefine its role in Kings Mountain. The non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization is focusing on developing a new mission within the context of its defined purpose as stated in its 501(c)(3) application. “We have a purpose but we need to find a different way to use it,” said Cindy Blanton, MPI treasurer and owner of Open Door Consulting & Business Services. As of December 31, 2011, the relationship between the City of Kings Mountain and The Mountaineer Partnership, Inc. ended. As municipal and non-profit partners in the Main Street Program, Kings Mountain followed one model of the State of North

MAIN STREET: offers tips to grow the downtown ‘heart’ of NC’s ‘city with a heart’ FROM Page 1 North Carolina Small Town Main Street Coordinator Sherry Adams told the crowd it was time to get excited; downtown is ripe for a glorious future. Sharing the results of a business and market development study, she outlined recommendations for the city's growth through the Main Street program's four-point approach to renewing downtowns: organization, design, promotion and economic development. The city seems to be on the right track. Adams said that Bessemer City already captures about 109% of the retail market demand created by the 15,242 households that reside within a five-mile radius of downtown. But there is still room for improvement. The plan is to focus marketing efforts on those living within a five-mile radius of downtown, where BC has the best chance of recapturing its retail customers. "There is potential," she said, "within the downtown to capture retail leakage in targeted specific areas." Bessemer City lost an estimated $6.5 million to outlying cities last year when it came to the clothing and clothing accessories market, according to the report. Sales, in other cities, of building materials and lawn and garden generated a leakage of about $5.8

million here. The downtown market lost an estimated $4.1 million in sales, when it came to electronics and appliances; more than $2.8 million in food services and drinking places; and more than $2.5 million in furniture and home furnishings. Adams estimated that, if downtown Bessemer City were to focus its efforts on these targeted markets, it could recapture between 15%20% of the leakages noted in the report. Merchants of clothing could sell close to a million dollars in inventory next year if 15% of the shoppers, who go elsewhere for goods, decided to shop closer to home. Hardware stores could sell more than $864,000 in items, with bundles to be made in other markets as well. Even though Bessemer City holds a surplus, overall, in retail sales, Adams said, there are still ways to increase revenue through specialized "niche" markets. The idea, she added, is to offer a variety of shops to fill these niche and special needs by filling up vacant space. According to the report, downtown can support a total of more than 34,000 square feet of potential for new businesses. "There is no better tool than knowledge of your marketplace," Adams said. She recommended that residential areas adjacent to downtown be kept residential

and that steps be taken to have downtown listed on the National Historic Register Study List. City Planning Director Kevin Krouse said that they have already started working on that second recommendation. Adams also encouraged more residential growth downtown, with the possibility of loft apartments or mixed-use spaces. 'Understand Your Market' She added that since the median age for a Bessemer Citizen is 37, it is important to know what the Generation X'ers and their younger siblings, the tech-savvy Generation Y's are purchasing. In other words, "understand your market". Adams recommended the city identify available spaces suitable for office, residential, government and churches downtown. In its business district, downtown Bessemer City is currently home to 8 retail businesses with room for more. "As with many small towns, the relatively small total number of retail businesses impacts the ability to draw a sizable number of customers to downtown for shopping," Adams noted. To help draw more of those customers, she suggested BC's economic restructuring committee refine its inventory of available properties downtown, mapping out possible future uses, and keeping reasonable rental rates in mind. She said that a successful business mix will contain enterprises that are market driven, financially feasible and located appropriately. "All available property should be inventoried and evaluated to determine appropriate business type," Adams recommended. "Change of use can often mean higher building rehabilitation costs, but it could also mean the difference between a building being rented and standing vacant." She also suggested that vacant buildings be developed or redeveloped first before tackling new construction on vacant parcels. Adams added that great potential may lie in developing the old Osage Mill property if its owners ever decided

to. Before being inducted into the NC Small Town Main Street program, Bessemer City worked with consultants Ryan-Harris, LLC to study ways of improving downtown. "The previous Ryan-Harris Market Study, more specifically, the Small Area Plan for Downtown (SAPD) states that Bessemer City should develop a more cohesive and larger downtown core expanding the area’s boundaries," Adams noted in her report. "Their suggestion is to extend from the city’s water park to and including the downtown mills on Alabama Avenue. On Virginia Avenue, the downtown area extends from a half block past 13th Street to the last of the mill kit homes at 7th Street. Ryan-Harris suggested designating four different districts within this core area: Downtown VA, Downtown PA, East Downtown and the proposed Historic District. Our recommendation is to

adopt this as a part of the longterm planning process with immediate attention to filling available space within the Historic (central) business district." Bessemer City was inaugurated into the prestigious Main Street program by the NC Department of Commerce, Urban Development Division in July 2011. Since then, volunteers throughout the city have formed committees to tackle objectives in the program aimed at renewing downtown, while preserving its history and natural charm. Adams noted the city is full of charm, but a few of its welcome signs could use a little revamping. "It looked a little gothic to me," she said with a sheepish laugh, adding - with palms up - that replacing it is "just a

Cucumbers... Cucumbers, which originated in northwest India, are related to pumpkins, squashes, gourds, melons, watermelons and chayote. The large types are usually eaten as they are. The smaller ones are often pickled. Choose cucumbers that are well-shaped and completely firm overall. They should have a good green color although some white or greenish-white color is all right. A large number of small surface lumps is normal. Very large cucumbers or cucumbers with yellowing skin are over-mature and have hard seeds. Wash cucumbers and dry then thoroughly. Keep refrigerated in the vegetable crisper or in plastic bags to prevent wilting due to loss of moisture. Use cucumbers within one week.

Williams said that Memorial Day began as Decoration Day when women from the South decorated the graves of Civil War dead with flowers. The day was officially proclaimed by General John Logan in May 1868. It was first observed on May 30,1868 when flowers were placed on both Union and Confederate graves at Arlington National Cemetery. Though a solemn occasion, Williams noted that Memorial Day hasn't always struck everyone as a dark holiday. President Benjamin Harrison, who served during the Civil War as a Brigadier General of he Tenth Corps of the Army of the Cumberland, said he never thought of it as a day of mourning and didn't feel quite right abut seeing all the flags at half staff. He said,"I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing where their valor placed it. We honor them in joyous, triumphant commemoration of what they did." Williams added, what is a memorial if not a fitting tribute intended to celebrate the

memory and honor of a deserving person? Should we not publicly praise their efforts and celebrate the service of those who gave what Lincoln called "The last full measure of devotion?" "We thank God for the courage that drove these patriots, the steel in their backbones and the selflessness of their actions, extraordinary deeds of these men and women who probably thought of themselves as quite ordinary," said Williams. Said the mayor, "We will never forget those men and women who knew the risk but who believed in duty, honor, personal courage and loyalty sharing a common bond of duty, family, God and country. They placed their service to country above all other commitments and gave their all for the principles of democracy and freedom." A slight breeze ruffled the many American flags throughout the cemetery on graves of veterans decorated with red, white and blue flowers. Little Miss Poppy Bethany Dunn of Unit 155, American Legion Auxiliary, distributed the red memorial poppy to those who stood quietly for the 30-minute ceremony. Murphrey and Williams laid the memorial wreath, donated by Harris Funeral Home, at the veteran's memorial monument to war dead.

EL BETHEL: to celebrate church’s 200th anniversary Sunday; all invited to bicentennial event FROM Page 1 to join the church in this event. Memorabilia of the church's history on display include offering plates, oil lamps, communion cloths, Bibles, plates, photographs of pastors, and lecterns. Donna Russ, Margaret Ledford, Jeanne Ware and Sandra Wilson comprise the committee busy with preparing a history. Tradition is that Methodism began in the White Plains community (Kings Mountain at that time was called White Plains) in the year 1812 and religious services were held in brush arbors, homes, and by a circuit preacher who came occasionally and particularly to conduct baptismal services. "There were no dry weather and Sunday Christians in the early days, but all went up, wet or dry, cold or hot, to the House of God," said a history compiled by Mrs. Grady King and Mrs. Alonzo Goforth on the 150th anniversary of the church. They wrote that scattered population and poor roads made meetings difficult but families traveled to services by horseback and horse and wagon. As the years passed, roads were improved, population increased and interest in the spiritual life of the community grew. Among the oldest dates decipherable on the old stones in the cemetery are Jacob Harmon, 1816; Peter Harmon, 1818; and Andrew Harmon, 1818. The 1812-1962 history recorded reminiscences of

Lenora Tracy Durham Dixon, daughter of the postmistress of White Plains who was credited with naming Kings Mountain. Lenora's name can still be read on the tall stone. Her father and mother, Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Tracy, took their two small children, Lenora and Rush, to church and Dr. Tracy was superintendent of the Sunday School. The first church building was of logs with cracks in the floor. During one Sunday School class a dog's tail appeared between the logs and was grasped by a small boy sitting nearby. As expected, the dog howled and disrupted the service. The speaker was heard to say, "That boy and the devil will break up my Sunday School yet." Construction began in 1875 for a frame church erected by the side of the road in a level, sandy place out of the woods and cemetery. Opposite the church a school building, White Plains Academy, was built and opened in 1859. When the War Between the States broke out, young men were trained in military tactics and many volunteered "for the Southern cause." As El Bethel grew, so did the village of Kings Mountain. Many Methodists were employed in mills in Kings Mountain with no transportation to El Bethel. Eight members of El Bethel established a church in town in 1875 and El Bethel became the mother church of what is now Central Methodist and for many years the same pastor

served both churches. Much of the labor was done by the members themselves for a larger church for which the cornerstone was laid in 1912 and the Sunday School added in 1931. The parsonage was completed in the early 1950s, the educational unit and fellowship hall added in the early 1960s. Stained glass windows in the sanctuary were given in memory of loved ones. A recent ad-

dition to the church property is a playground and picnic area. "The growth and success of the church is due to the fact that everyone works together," says Sandra Wilson. A prime example is the regular country breakfasts that women of the church prepare and serve, with proceeds benefiting the church. "As I think about the hardships and difficulty those early worship-

pers faced on just getting to worship, I am awestruck by their faithfulness to God and one another," said Pastor Tom Jolly, who came to Kings Mountain two years ago. He serves both the El Bethel and Grace United Methodist churches. Said the pastor, "the seeds of that faithfulness have borne good fruit."

Kings Mountain and downtown businesses benefited not only from grants but also from experts who advised us with historical restoration, facades, promotion of the downtown, and retail leakage of business to

other communities. As storefronts began to fill and people came to shop here, we could see the difference in downtown Kings Mountain. The Mountaineer Partnership, Inc. was incorporated in 2001 and was funded initially by taxes from the MSD property owners that were matched by the City of Kings Mountain. In 2011, MPI launched its “Turning Point Campaign” to develop funding for additional design projects in downtown. The City funding has of course stopped

by MPI as a separate, legal business entity and a 501(c)(3) can seek our own sources of income once we have redefined our purpose. We ask that former MPI Board members and volunteers give us input as we move forward. The Mountaineer Partnership, Inc. supports the City's efforts to continue with Main Street. Legion team drops two, BBQ and Baseball Friday GARY STEWART Sports Editor

Kings Mountain Post 155 fell to Lincoln County 4-1 and Union County 20-1 in its opening season games Friday and Saturday night at Lancaster Field. Post 155 returns home Friday at 7 p.m. to host Charlotte in what has been designated as “Baseball and Barbecue” Night. Fans can get a plate of BBQ and admission to the game for just $10. Post 155 plays at Huntersville Saturday and hosts Gastonia Sunday. CJ Harris of Clover pitched a strong ball game for Post 155 Friday but was the victim of several errors. Lincoln County led by just 2-1 going into the ninth inning. Post 155 left 10 runners on base. Alex Reynolds led the KM plate attack with two hits. Kevin Mills, Daniel Barrett, Dallas

Conner and Alex Grooms added one apiece. Landon Bolin had the RBI with an infield out. Kings Mountain had very little success getting Union County batters out on Saturday night. The visitors slammed five KM pitchers for 17 hits and also took advantage of several Post 155 errors, wild pitches and passed balls. Kings Mountain got Union County out in order just twice in the sixth on a double play and in the eighth when Paul McNeily came into pitch and got them up three-up, three-down. Union grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Garrett Helms’ RBI single and a sacrifice fly. The score ballooned to 19-0 before Dallas Conner homered over the left field fence in the bottom of the seventh. Kings Mountain’s only other hits were a single to right by Daniel Barrett in the second and an infield hit by Harris in the ninth.

2012 KM High School Prom King and Queen KM Historical Museum Children’s Flower Arranging Workshop Susan Patterson of Sunflowers by Susan shared her expertise on flower arranging at the Children’s Flower Arranging Workshop on May 22 at the Kings Mountain Historical Museum. Geared towards children ages 9 – 12, the Museum welcomed four young ladies at 4:30 p.m. to participate in the hands-on workshop. Susan Patterson started the program by discussing the necessity of starting with clean water and plant food

before beginning a floral arrangement. Participants were able to either bring their own vase or choose one provided by Ms. Patterson. During the demonstration, the girls were able to ask questions, while receiving personal assistance in developing their floral arrangements. Ms. Patterson then showed each of the girls how to select flowers and greenery that complimented their vases, and taught them a few rules to make their arrange-

ments look professionally done. The event ran in conjunction with the exhibit, “In Full Bloom: Gardening & Agriculture in Kings Mountain” which is on display at the Kings Mountain Historical Museum until June 2. Garden club installs officers The Town and Country Garden Club met May 10 at the home of Brenda Sipe. The 12 members read the Club Collect before enjoying a delicious meal of baked spaghetti, salad, and cheesecake with strawberries prepared by the hostess. The business meeting was called to order by Club President Cheryl Butler. Glenda Crawford read the minutes and Susan Gibson presented the treasurer's report. The planting of a crepe myrtle tree at the Kings Mountain Post Office was reported by Connie Bell and Jewel Kendrick, members of the Arbor Day committee. Connie Bell, who installed officers, said that Town and Country Garden Club held its first meeting Dec. 11, 1952. Organization of the club began in November the same year. Brenda Sipe, scrapbook committee, reviewed the beginning of the club by its charter members. Definite plans for the celebration of the club's 60th anniversary will be finalized at the September meeting. Members visited Upchurch Garden Center in Cherryville May 15 for a class in planting correct soil for flowers. During May club

members continued work at the Kings Mountain Post Office garden site. Ann Ward and Glenda Crawford will be selecting the home and business for the club's appearance awards in June. During the installation service Connie Bell presented President Cheryl Butler with sunflower seeds because as president "she stands and presides at meetings like the stately sunflower." Bell presented Vice-President Ann Ward with moss rose seeds representing ground cover because "she must be ready to cover for the president". Glenda Crawford, secretary, was presented wildflower seeds because "at times gathering correct notes can be wild." Susan Gibson, treasurer, was presented gourd seeds representing gourds color and shape which "last and can be filled with money." Jewel Kendrick and Connie Bell will continue as co-chairmen of Arbor Day activities. A plant exchange was enjoyed by members. Connie Bell will host the September meeting of the club at her home.

Stay safe this summer Summer is just around the corner. That means hot weather, blue skies and open swimming pools. In order to have a safe – and fun – summer, the American Red Cross encourages Kings Mountain-area residents to brush up on water safety skills. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on water-related injuries, the drowning rate in the United States averages 10 people per day, with a quarter of fatal drownings involving children 14 and younger. This is why Red Cross recommends swimming in areas supervised by a lifeguard. If no lifeguard is on duty, designate an adult as a “water watcher” who maintains constant supervision of children around any water no matter how well they can swim or how shallow the water. A 2009 Red Cross survey found that nearly one in three parents (30 percent) believe that "floaties" are better than supervision. The Red Cross stresses that floaties cannot be used as a substitute for appropriate supervision.

Keep your family safe with these few simple tips: • Learn to swim well. Contact the Cleveland County Chapter for information on learning how to swim—nearly 2 million people learn to swim each year with Red Cross programs. • Never leave children unattended near water — not even for a moment! Adults should practice “reach supervision,” which means to always be within arm’s length when a young child is near water. For older children – even adults – who are not strong swimmers, practice “active” or constant supervision and make sure they wear U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation devices (PFDs). • Know how to respond to an emergency. You should know how to tell if a swimmer is in distress or is drowning and how and when to call for emergency help. You should also learn how to help someone in trouble in water while keeping safe yourself. Do not create a situation where you become a victim as well!
