A joyful season turns mournful Area schools: emergency safety plans in place ELIZABETH STEWART lib.kmherald@gmail.com
Due to the Connecticut school shooting, Cleveland County school leaders will be re-evaluating systemwide emergency plans at the next district work session. “Any time something like this happens we get additional advice from law enforcement and review what we already have in place, Supt. Dr. Bruce Boyles said at Monday night’s board of education meeting. All Cleveland County schools have safety plans in place designed specifically for use in emergency situations. Local school officials work with the county schools administration to develop emergency plans and they practice them throughout the year so that students and staff will know what to expect. Schools work closely with local law enforcement agencies, including Kings Mountain Police, Shelby Police and the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department, all of whom are aware of the individual school’s safety plans. Security entrances have been created at all of the schools that include a patrolled access door controlled by staff. Each school and its entryway is also monitored with cameras. Christmas Eve services planned Christmas Eve church services will highlight the Christian celebration of Christmas. Three Kings Mountain Lutheran churches, Advent, Resurrection and St. Matthew’s Lutheran, are planning traditional 11 p.m. candlelight services. The Advent congregation worships at H. Lawrence Patrick Senior & Conference Center. The chancel at St. Matthew’s will be decorated with a pair of Chrismon trees, white poinsettias, and an Advent wreath with a Christ Candle in the center, lighted at the point in the reading of Luke 2 when the Christ Child is born. Pew torches will be used. Holy Communion will be celebrated around the manger at the altar rail. Special music will be provided by the choir and familiar carols will be sung by the con-
gregation. Candle lights will be passed down each pew at the end of the service symbolizing the Christ Child coming to each of us. Pastor Setzer’s sermon will be on “The Wondrous Gift. “Visitors are warmly welcome to join the congregation on this Holy Christmas Night,’’ said the pastor. First Presbyterian Church will hold candlelight communion service at 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Special music will be presented by the choir. Dixon Presbyterian Church will hold candlelight communion at 5 p.m. Christmas Eve. Allysa Newton will sing “Happy Birthday Jesus.’’ Boyce Memorial ARP Church will hold Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. After Lessons and carols, the congregation will light candles around a circle in the sanctuary and sing “Silent Night.
Amendment okayed By a 7-0 vote Kings Mountain city council took the planning board’s recommendation last Tuesday night and okayed a zoning text amendment which regulates permitted and conditional uses for public commercial multiple recreational and entertainment uses. The amendment specifies for recreational/entertainment use, under residential setbacks, that public streets and right of ways edge shall be a distance of 100 lineal feet. Councilman Tommy Hawkins made the motion to approve the text amendment, seconded by councilman Rick Moore.
Businessman Mike Brown, who is developing Hounds Campground, requested the amendment because currently there is no provision for multiple recreation in city ordinances. The minimum standards for a private recreational complex of at least 40 acres includes: 50 foot setbacks along any commercially zoned property or a 100 foot setback along any residential property, or a 400 foot setback from any existing church or residence from any motorized vehicle (go-carts or ATVs) activity; screening; six foot fence around any gocart course or track; any cabin occupancy restricted to no more than 21 consecutive days; hours of operation for any go-cart or ATV activity restricted to Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-11 p.m. and Sunday from 1-11 p.m.; and parking as required in Article IV of the Kings Mountain Zoning Ordinance.
Monday, Kings Mountain High School students were signing a banner and cards of sympathy to be sent to the families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims. At 7:15 a.m. today (Wednesday) the students and staff at KMHS released a balloon for each of the 26 victims on the front lawn of the high school on Phifer Road. The Cleveland County Board of Education opened its Monday night meeting with a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the horrifying Friday morning attack by 20-yearold Adam Lanzy, in a killing frenzy that also included his mother and himself. “We work hard in our schools to keep all our children safe, and in Cleveland County we have incorporated best practices to do that by working with individual schools and with law enforcement agencies, said Supt. Boyles. He added, “We don’t know why this tragedy happened but our prayers and thoughts are with the people in Newtown, Connecticut, we know they are hurting and we are hurting with them. Funerals for two of the young victims were held Monday and more are planned this week. The Associated Press reported that families in Newtown were already taking down Christmas decorations in this joyful season turned mournful.
Prayer vigil Saturday A prayer vigil for the victims of the Connecticut school shooting will be held Saturday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain. Harris Funeral Home and Central United Methodist Church are sponsoring the service to which the public is invited. Rev. Rex Gibbs, Central Methodist pastor, and Rev. Tom Jolly, El Bethel-Grace United Methodist pastor, will lead the service. Twenty-six candles will be lighted at the altar in memory of the 20 elementary school children, ages six and seven, and six teachers who were gunned down Friday morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in the second worst school massacre in American history. “We strongly believe that the faith community should come together for prayer for these bereaved families, said Eric Wright of the staff of Harris Funeral Home. “We don’t know them but we know their hearts are broken. The public is invited to participate in the memorial service. Harris Funeral Home is also opening a register book for sharing your thoughts with the bereaved families in Connecticut. You can also share condolences by clicking on the website www.HarrisFunerals.com The register book will be mailed by Harris staff to Honan Funeral home in Newtown with your messages and forwarded to families of the victims.

Smiths come home to KM for the holidays Two families in Kings Mountain got a special Christmas present when they learned that their children and grandchildren were coming home for the holidays from Schweinfurt, Germany. Dana and Greg Smith have been home for Christmas only twice in the 11 years they have worked in Germany where both are licensed ministers. Greg, son of Joann Smith and the late Odus Smith, ministers to the military, and Dana is a special education teacher at a school attended by children from military families. “We love what we do,’’ says Mrs. Smith. For them, she says it has been a calling. The family came back to the States for a special occasion on Saturday at Lee University in
Cleveland, Tennessee. Their son, Jonathan, 20, received his degree in business education and all his family were in attendance, including his younger brother, Gregory, who is a student at Lee University, and their sister, Heather, who is a first year student at a college in Alabama. Dana and Greg Smith will be visiting his mother and her parents, Raymond and Brenda Couch, until Jan. 5 (Dana’s birthday) when they fly home to Schweinfurt. Dana and Greg Smith were high school sweethearts at Kings Mountain High School where he graduated in 1980 and she graduated in 1982. Greg’s church is an “international congregation” of 85-90
members who speak 14 different languages. His sermons are in English but a German translator is also required for all services. There are few Americans in the congregation since the Army base closed in that location, about a 40 minute ride from the Smith home. Their church members are Germans, Africans, Asians, and Russians. Dana currently teaches 16 special education students but she fears the school will probably close next year. She formerly taught children of military families at a school in Kitzinten, Germany. “My husband and I love Germany and the work we are able to do there,’’ said Dana. But she adds, “we always like to come home too.”
Greg, Jonathan, Heather, Gregory and Dana Smith, left to right, are home for Christmas in Kings Mountain for only the second time in 11 years that Greg and Dana Smith have lived in Germany.

Kings Mountain police say hackers are still stealing personal information on credit and debit cards in this area. “Be watchful, says Chief Melvin Proctor. Mayor Rick Murphrey said his card was hacked at a gas station this week and the perpetrator used it to buy merchandise at a store in Gaffney, SC. Proctor suggests that residents use checks or cash if possible. Target areas for the hackers appear to be grocery stores and gas stations. One incident of financial card fraud was reported by a local bank this week. The chief and Det. Todd McDougal are both victims of hackers. They have found out from the Secret Service and other investigators that the recent hacking of bank cards isn’t only happening in Kings Mountain but nationwide. McDougal says that no local business “is to blame, it isn’t anything any of them have done wrong.” He said police have found out that an unknown entity, possibly one as far distant as overseas, is hacking computer systems everywhere.
said that Tharon Alexander of Shelby, operating a 2007 Chevy, reached to the floor board to pick up a soda bottle and his vehicle rear-ended a 2007 Ford operated by Marybeth Bell Back, 758 Bell Road. The accident happened at the traffic light at US 74 West and Kings Mountain Blvd. Property damages were estimated at $4500.

Letters to the Editor
Lib Stewart Managing Editor
Thank you for your generosity this Christmas Hundreds of families have benefited this Christmas from the generosity of Kings Mountain people and churches. Many projects, both individual and group efforts, have been completed for the benefit of those in need. The list is too long to try to list because of the likely error of leaving someone, some church, or some club or civic group out. Certainly some child will wake up Christmas morning, run to the Christmas tree, and find just what he asked Santa for in his letter to Santa in this week’s Herald. Because Kings Mountain has always been a caring and giving community, there will be smiles on the faces of strangers you have helped to have a brighter and merrier Christmas. And since you too “have given to the least of these my brethren” your Christmas should be one of your best ever. Merry Christmas and happy holidays from all the staff of the Kings Mountain Herald.

New NC law to provide opportunity
To the Editor: Many of you have watched Act of Valor while staying with us at Inn of the Patriots in Grover and enjoyed it. We have enjoyed having our friends in Special Warfare, SEALS, Rangers and other units stay with us. For the third year we will be sending a special Holiday box to these powerful units who kill, capture and rescue for a living under orders. They remain unashamed of what they do for America and in their private relationships that they alone speak with God about. If you would like to contribute to pay for the heavy shipping costs or contribute something like DVD players, DVDs, books, unused greeting cards with pre-stamped postage back, an unsealed greeting card to them from you, razors for shaving, Sudoko books or crossword puzzle books, music CDs, etc... you can drop them by the inn or ship them here throughout January 5 as we ring in the New Year for them. We do not accept liquids, gels, shampoo, cremes, food or anything that could be filled or tampered with inside. We only accept non-threatening items that would be impossible to turn into anything harmful - keep that in mind. By now you know that many of our guests that have stayed here have participated in the highest level operations in our history. Several movies have been released recently about what they have done. Please keep them in your prayers, or if you do not pray or believe in God, we would only ask that you keep them in your kind thoughts. We will be cooking early Christmas morning again and all day long on Christmas Day for the poor and lonely of the area. We already have one family coming with several children who have absolutely nothing to look forward to except our church and all of the people coming to give up Christmas for them. If you would like to help - give us a call anytime.
To the Editor: A new law that went into effect Dec. 1 offers a new beginning to thousands of individuals who have long since paid their debts to society. The law allows for expunctions of first-time nonviolent misdemeanor and low-level felony convictions 15 years after an individual has fully completed his or her sentence. It was signed into law on July 16, and took effect on December 1, 2012. If eligible, an individual must demonstrate he or she possesses good moral character and has been on good behavior throughout the 15-year waiting period. The law will benefit those who have long demonstrated a sincere dedication to contributing to society through their upstanding behavior, but are still being denied opportunities to reintegrate with and contribute to their communities. As the first law in North Carolina to provide general expungement opportunities to individuals convicted as adults, it is a positive step forward, and will provide relief to tens of thousands of eligible individuals. “This new law is a measured but historic response to the heavy burden of collateral consequences weighing down the 1.6 million North Carolinians with criminal records—consequences that often follow individuals throughout their personal and professional lives, and can have a more devastating effect than their actual criminal punishments,” said Daniel Bowes, a staff attorney with the North Carolina Justice Center’s Collateral Consequences Initiative. “Although this law is not perfect, it will make a huge difference in the lives of tens of thousands of eligible individuals across the state.” North Carolina is one of a handful of states providing opportunities for expunction to individuals with nonviolent misdemeanor and felony convictions. Laws in these states typically require a waiting period of between 5 and 10 years before an expunction may be granted. “This new expunction opportunity demonstrates that North Carolina’s lawmakers are beginning to recognize that perpetually isolating individuals from gainful employment, affordable housing, and community supports triggers collateral consequences that serve as barriers to reentry and ultimately do more harm than good,” Bowes said. The NC Justice Center is part of the Second Chance Alliance, a statewide alliance of advocacy organizations, service providers, faith-based organizations, community leaders and directly-impacted citizens that aims to achieve the safe and successful reintegration of adults and juveniles with criminal records by promoting policies that remove barriers to productive citizenship. The alliance was critical in speaking out in support of the legislation. To prepare its advocacy agenda for the upcoming legislative session, the Second Chance Alliance recently hosted a series of listening sessions in communities around the state in which more than 100 individuals with criminal records, reentry service providers, and other interested citizens participated. Visit the Second Chance Alliance website at ncsecondchance.org.

Fire safety for the holidays
MEDITATION Making Christmas memories
Dr. Jeff Hensley Pastor Kings Mountain Baptist Church When I was a boy, my great-grandmother would spend Christmas Eve with us. It was always fun to know “Nanny” was coming to visit. Our supper on Christmas Eve was simple and quick because my immediate family exchanged gifts on Christmas Eve so that we could spend Christmas Day with extended family. Having “Nanny” visit with us on Christmas Eve helped make the holiday spe-
cial, and because my brother and I we were always anxious to find out of Santa Claus had visited us, Nanny always brought her flashlight with her, and she would accompany us as we would sneak into the living room to see if there was anything under the Christmas tree. In retrospect, I am sure that my greatgrandmother had as much fun as we did. After spending Christmas morning at home, we would all share lunch and the afternoon with other family, and when the day was close to being over, we would return my great-grandmother to her own home before we ourselves would go back home again. One year, though, we convinced Nanny to spend one more night with us. That particular Christmas I received a toy that included what today might be called an “action figure,” which was an
astronaut, and this action figure was equipped with a variety of outer space vehicles and tools that were powered by batteries located in the figure’s backpack. One of those tools was a pistol that, when positioned in the hand of the figure and plugged into the backpack, would generate a red light and a buzzing sound. In my boyish mind I had imagined that light being more fun to play with in the dark, so on Christmas night I took it out and fired it up. I then began walking through the house trying to see how much light that toy would actually generate, and when I came to where my greatgrandmother was sleeping, I got so close to her face with my toy that I frightened her into thinking some sort of huge, strange, buzzing insect was about to get her. All of a sudden, my Nanny screamed and waved
her hand through the air in order to knock that big insect away, which caused my toy to fly across the room. It frightened both of us and awoke everyone else in the house, and although I remember little more about the event, I know that my Nanny and I laughed and laughed together as we would reminisce about it in the years that followed. My great-grandmother lived to be 102 and she has been with God in heaven for some time now, but I still remember the night I frightened her with my toy and it brings a smile to me even now. One of the blessings of celebrating Christmas with those we love is the memories we can make, and I pray that all of us will cherish those memories because, as the years past, we discover that our memories are among our most lasting gifts.
How many strands of mini string lights can you safely connect? How many inches should you cut from the base of a fresh-cut Christmas tree before placing it in water? Not really sure? Then it’s time to sharpen your holiday fire safety smarts with information and resources from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Across the board, the majority of holiday fires are the result of human error. The holiday season is a time when there is an increased risk of home fires. NFPA is offering resources to help increase public awareness about fire risks during the holiday season, “Project Holiday” features a quiz that checks just how prepared you really are for a fire-safe season. Sparky the Fire Dog is also pitching in with holidaythemed fire-safety materials for parents and educators on his website, including downloadable coloring and activity sheets and e-cards. According to NFPA, many holiday traditions and festivities significantly contribute to the season’s increased risks: · December is the peak month for home candle fires. · Although Christmas tree fires aren’t common, when they do occur, they’re more likely to be serious. · A heat source too close to the tree causes roughly one in five associated fires, with one of every three home Christmas tree fires caused by electrical problems. · Almost half of all holiday lighting fires occur in December. ·Cooking is the leading cause of home fires; unattended cooking is the leading cause. To learn more about “Project Holiday” and its tips for a fire-safe season, visit www.nfpa.org/holiday.

Bessemer City still debating police coverage BETH BROCK beth.kmherald@gmail.com
Bessemer City is eyeing whether to keep Gaston County’s police coverage of the town, or return to having its own police department. A third option may entail getting coverage from neighboring cities. Bessemer City Manager James Inman told members of city council last week that the city is definitely looking at some weekend retreats in the near future to try to resolve the issue. A committee of four, Mayor Becky Smith, City Manager James Inman, and councilmen Donnie Griffin and Dan Boling was selected to study the issue and meet with Gaston County representatives concerning future coverage, but Inman wants to have the entire council on hand to discuss the options. After 14 years of providing police coverage for Bessemer City, Gaston County Manager Jan Winters has informed Bessemer City that the cost is going up to $1.2 million. Bessemer City currently pays $357,000 per year for coverage, in addition to providing an office, a tower for the radio repeater, and all utilities. Thomas C. Yount, a retired chief of police, presented a cost benefit analysis at the recent meeting. Yount compared the cost of police coverage in Bessemer City to Mint Hill and Indian Trail, which have gone back to having their own police forces rather than staying with Mecklenburg County.

Ramsey receives ‘Rubber Meets the Road’ award ELIZABETH STEWART lib.kmherald@gmail.com
By all accounts Grover kindergarten teacher Tandra Ramsey goes the extra mile for students in her classroom. Clark Tire and Auto, local family-owned, complete tire and auto center in Kings Mountain, has recognized her dedication with its “Rubber Meets the Road award for dedication to her students and school. A surprised Tandra and her children, Cameron, 16, and Jenna, 10, were picked up in the Clark Tire van and on arrival at Clark Tire on S. Battleground Avenue learned that Mrs. Ramsey was the third Cleveland County Schools educator recognized by the company in the past year. Twice previously during the school year, Clark Tire officials chose teachers recommended by their principals for going that extra mile for their students. Tandra’s Toyota SUV received a complete makeover,
compliments of Clark Tire, with a new set of tires and four-wheel alignment, oil change, tune up, new brakes, belts and an interior/exterior detailing. Although Ms. Ramsey currently teaches kindergarten, she has taught grades K-4 at Grover. She is a team player who “sees the big picture and has willingly changed grade levels in her teaching assignments to meet school needs, according to Grover Principal Janet Anthony. Dr. Anthony said Mrs. Ramsey is creative and successful in integrating technology in her lesson plan designs. She said Mrs. Ramsey reaches out to students and their families and builds relationships with them. Mrs. Ramsey’s impact on children is remarkable and deserving of recognition for a job well done, Dr. Anthony said. Tim Lail, Clark General Manager, and Rusty Albrecht, local store manager, took the occasion to praise Ramsey and all teachers

She is a former city of Kings Mountain employee in the planning and recreation departments. The “unveiling came Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the company’s Kings Mountain store on South Battleground with a brief ceremony led by Clark Tire officials and attended by school staff and board members, Kings Mountain city officials and Cleveland County chamber
representatives. Congratulating Ramsey were Kings Mountain Mayor Rick Murphrey, Schools Supt. Dr. Bruce Boyles, Cleveland Chamber President Michael Chrisawn, and local Chamber manager Shirley Brutko. Mrs. Ramsey thanked Clark Tire for their generosity. “It’s such a blessing here at Christmas, she said. “I am truly blessed to work with our children at Grover. Clark Tire will select another teacher in the spring for the award also given to teachers in Lincoln, Catawba and Gaston counties. KM gridder Phillip Quinn chosen as Panthers’ Community Captain
Isaiah Cole will be playing in the Down Under Classic, a basketball tournament in Australia this summer.
KM’S Cole invited to play ball in Australia Kings Mountain High basketball player Isaiah Cole has been nominated to play in the Down Under Hoops Classic this summer in Australia. Two all-star teams from the United States and teams from Australia will compete in the two-day event that takes place in different cities in Australia. Each team will play a minimum of 10 games. Because Australian basketball rules are different than those in the U.S., there will be numerous practice sessions prior to the tournament. Cole said he got some good exposure last summer playing AAU ball for the Gastonia Huskies, who won a state tournament in Myrtle Beach. They also competed regularly in Rock Hill and Charlotte. He is a junior at KMHS where he plays basketball, tennis, soccer and football. Cole needs the public’s help to raise the $5,000 necessary to make the trip, which will include a week in Hawaii after the tournaments. He is currently selling T-shirts and raising sponsorship money. Call him at 704-860-5051, his mother Geneva Cole at 704-4186509 or visit www.Isaiahcole.weebly.com for more information. Cole said he hopes the tournament will give him some “exposure for college and experience so I can improve more on the court.” He has been playing basketball since age 5 in local recreation and YMCA leagues. He played for his father, Shane, at Kings Mountain Middle School and is in his third year as a member of the KMHS basketball team. He normally plays shooting guard but can also play point guard. In addition to working daily on improving his athletic talents - when he isn’t practicing with the team he is working out on his own Cole carries a 4.6 grade point average. He hopes to attend either NC State,
Kings Mountain High student athlete Phillip Quinn is one of ten seniors from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia that will be honored as Community Captains prior to the Carolina Panthers-Oakland Raiders game December 23. Quinn, a football and basketball player for the Mountaineers, was nominated for the award by KMHS athletic director Dustin Morehead. According to a release on the Panthers’ website, the award honors ten elite high school student athletes who excel on the field and in the classroom, and who take an active role in their community. It also requires a 3.0 or higher grade point average. Quinn maintains a 3.75 unweighted and 4.45 weighted GPA. He hopes to attend UNC-Chapel Hill or NC State and study biomedical engineering. In the community, Quinn has volunteered at flu clinics, youth basketball camps, was a church camp counselor and along with other KMHS football players and coaches served as ushers for races at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Next week he will begin tutoring seventh grade students at Kings Mountain Middle School on afternoons after school. Quinn recently learned that he will be receiving the KMHS Student Athlete of the Year Award at the upcoming football banquet. Quinn has attended past Panthers games, but the December 23 trip will be his first this season. “It’s pretty exciting,” he said of the honor. All honorees will be able to go down on the playing field as the Panthers warm up, and will then be recognized just before the start of the game. They will receive an authentic and personalized Community Captain game ball. “It will be an opportunity to get some autographs,” he said. Although the Mountaineers didn’t have a winning season this fall, Quinn said he was happy with the way they performed. He was one of 12 starters that were injured during the course of the season. He started at Roy Back, was injured for a couple of games midway of See Quinn, Page 2B

The Lady Mountaineers held Chase to just one free throw in the first period and two in the second quarter to build a 27-3 halftime lead. They led 59-10 going into the fourth period when Coach Mike Harris sat all of his starters on the bench while reserves and JV players finished the game. Junior Monique Petty led the KM attack with 33 points and 14 rebounds, giving her six straight double-doubles to open the season. Freshman Tiffani Thompson added seven points and eight rebounds. Girls lose, boys win Big South openers Kings Mountain and South Point split their Big South 3A opener Friday night at KM’s Donald L. Parker Gymnasium with the Lady Red Raiders winning 45-43 and the KM men prevailing 71-67. The girls game saw South Point come back from a 22-point second quarter deficit after KM’s leading scorer and rebounder Monique Petty took an elbow to the eye and had the leave the game. Petty reported to Coach Mike Harris and Athletic Trainer Alan Ridenhoure that she was dizzy and not seeing clearly and they decided to sit her out the second half. During the third period, she stood up and collapsed on the gym floor. Ridenhoure worked with her for about 15 minutes until the rescue squad arrived and took her to the hospital. South Point cut the lead to 40-39 after three quarters and took the lead at 41-40 with 6:46 remaining in the game. They never
trailed again even though there were some anxious moments. Each team missed several foul shots in the last 24 seconds but South Point’s Blair Griffin hit a big one with 14.8 seconds remaining to give the Lady Raiders their final margin of victory. Kings Mountain’s Dai Dai Roberts missed a potential game-tying jump shot with 4.6 seconds left but there was a tie-up under the basket and KM had the possession arrow. South Point’s Ashley Mull, who led her team with 15 points, made the play of the game when she intercepted KM’s inbounds pass and ran the clock out. Coach Harris said the Lady Mountaineers were well-prepared and ready to play the Lady Raiders, knowing that they are one of the teams KM will be battling with for a state playoff berth. The only negative for the Lady Mountaineers was that they continued to shoot poorly from the charity stripe, hitting on 7 of 17. “I thought we played like we should have for the most part,” Coach Harris said. “Our free throw percentage has got to get better. Need late tax break? Give to field house project With just a few more days remaining in 2012, it’s time to begin thinking of last-minute tax deductions. A great way to get some bucks back on your taxes is a donation to the Kings Mountain Touchdown Club’s building campaign. For several months the club has been raising money for a new field house at Kings Mountain High School and it is lacks just over $100,000 in contributions and pledges to fully fund the project. At present the drive stands at $692,000 and approximately $800,000 is needed. KMTD Club President David Brinkley announced this week that the club has made arrangements with a local broker where donors can donate stock to the touchdown club and avoid a capital gains tax. “If you’ve had a nice gain on a stock you can donate it to the Kings Mountain Touchdown Club, we can sell it and you avoid capital gains because it is going to a non-profit organization,” Brinkley explains. “Please consider us in your planning. We’re close to having 100 percent funding on phase one.” After the field house project is fully funded, the club will begin raising money and pledges to build a new press box, concession stands and restrooms at John Gamble Stadium. The general contractor, Tommy Hall Builders, is in the process of getting final quotes for the field house and hopes to have that process completed this week. After that the club’s representatives will meet with architect Roger Holland and Cleveland County Schools Superintendent Dr. Bruce Boyles for final approval to begin construction. Persons who have made 3-year pledge commitments can also get a late tax break by giving their second-year pledge by the end of the year. They can mail their checks to Kings Mountain Touchdown Club, P.O. Box 2017, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. Persons wishing to consider donating stocks are urged to call David or Marie Brinkley at 704-423-9690. “With the current political climate in Washington, DC capital gains may be going up,” Brinkley noted. “If you want to avoid them this is a good time to donate stock. And if you’d like to go ahead and make your second year pledge this is a good time for that too.”

Mountaineers post back-to-back wins Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers won back-to-back non-conference games against future SMAC opponents Chase and R-S Central last week. The Mountaineers will join the Rutherford County teams, Cleveland County teams and two Burke County teams in the new split 2A/3A Conference next year. Big second half comebacks was the key to both victories as Grayson Pierce’s Mountaineers improved their non-conference record to 3-4. They played their final nonconference game at home last night against Burns, another SMAC member that the Mountaineers defeated earlier in Lawndale. Tuesday at KM’s Donald L. Parker Gymnasium, the Mountaineers topped Chase 6658. Wil Sellers scored the first five points of the game to give the Mountaineers an early lead but Chase came back to lead 16-9 after the first quarter and 36-31 at intermission. The Mountaineers came out hot in the second half, though, and built a 50-48 lead and never trailed again. James Tillman led the Mountaineers with his sixth straight double-double. He tallied 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Sellers finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore point guard Shawn Adams gave the team a spark off the bench with 13 points. The Mountaineers had their best shooting night thus far, hitting 56 percent (24 of 43) from two-point range and 38 percent (5 of 13) from beyond the arc. At R-S Central Wednesday night, the host Hilltoppers jumped out to a 13-6 first quarter lead but the Mountaineers came back to win 65-59. Adams led the scoring with 14 points. Tillman recorded his seventh straight doubledouble with 12 points and 14 rebounds and Solomon Hawkins contributed 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Kings Mountain outscored the Hilltoppers

Our upside is very high.” The Lady Mountaineers played tough at RS against a traditionally strong team that had a size advantage at most positions. Despite all the adversity, Harris said the Lady Mountaineers still had their chance to win. "We need to learn from it and move on," he said. "To see everyone of those girls in the locker room after the game with tears running down their face, told me how they felt. It told me they cared, and that made me proud." Losing Petty certainly brought on problems for the KM offense and defense, as she had averaged a doubledouble in points and rebounds in the first eight games. The Mountaineers managed only 12 points in the second half, including just three in the fourth quarter, but the rebounding of Tiffani Thompson and Alecia Wade kept the Mountaineers in position to win. Neither team was able to convert many baskets down the stretch. South Point led 44-43 after KM freshman Tiffani Thompson’s basket with 2:15 left. The Raiders turned the ball over twice but were able to make big defensive plays on the other end to keep the lead. "Obviously we had some adversity in the third quarter," Harris said. "I'm not really sure any of us handled that very well. I know I didn't. It's never easy seeing a kid fall out and having that helpless feeling of not knowing what to do. I care about all of my players, and I wouldn't have felt any different about any of them. Monique is one of my daughter's friends that comes over to the house to goof off when they're supposed to be studying. Even though we will probably be without her this week, I've been told that there are no long term problems. All of this was the result of being hit around the eye area that created her dizziness and headaches. She should be fine. "I am so thankful that we have somebody at KMHS like Alan Ridenhoure. He is so good at what he does. When he made the decision to hold Mo out of the second half, she was very lucid and aware of what was going on, but he knew how these things could take a turn for

Young Patriot wrestlers lose title match but finish 2012 season with 12-2 record
Coach Alfred Ash urges his team on during Tri-County Conference championship match with West Lincoln Thursday at the KMMS gym.
Kings Mountain Middle School’s wrestling team lost its Tri-County Conference championship match with West Lincoln Thursday at the Patriots’ gym, but the team has a lot to look forward to next season. Coaches Alfred Ash and David Farquharson have 17 seventh graders who will be returning next year as the Patriots try to improve on this year’s 10-2 overall record. Six seventh graders were starters this year. Kings Mountain and West Lincoln met for the third time this season after tying for the East Division title. West Lincoln defeated R-S Central in the first round of the conference playoffs and Kings Mountain defeated Shelby 66-36. Thursday, the Patriots led early but saw West Lincoln storm from behind in the middle weights to win 57-42. “We had a couple of starters out but we’re not making excuses,” Coach Ash
said. “The kids did well and it was a good season.” Winners for the Patriots were Luke Rikard at 83 pounds, Reese Reinhart at 98, Tryin Ross at 106, Javelin Rankin at 152, Darian Mclain at 170, Tyler Hunley at 220 and Trevon Wilson at heavyweight. “We had a great season,” Coach Ash said. “I believe that the program is growing and the kids are benefiting on and off the mat from this experience.” In Tuesday’s semi-final victory over Shelby, Kings Moutnain winners were Rikard at 83, Quenton Nguygen at 90, Reinhart at 98, Ross at 106, Cameron Walls at 113, Austin Mosley at 132, Roman Byers at 145, Sedrick Morgan at 160, McClain at 170, RJ Bishop at 195 and Wilson at 220. Kings Mountain carried a 9-match winning streak into the championship match. The Patriots split their first two matches, beating East Lincoln 57-42
and losing to West Lincoln 72-29. Beginning on November 8, the Patriots reeled off wins over Lincolnton (78-24), North Lincoln (69-36), Burns (75-24), West Lincoln (54-46), East Lincoln (57-42), Lincolnton (82-12), North Lincoln (68-45), Burns (69-30) and Shelby (66-36) before falling to West in the finals. McClain (12-0) and Nguyen (10-0) completed the season with perfect records. Wilson (11-1) lost only once match. Members of the team were Quenten Nguyen, Luke Rikard, Mitchell Hord, Reese Reinhart, Landry Crawford, Cameron Walls, Malik Banner, Houston Carringer, Lane Evans, Austin Mosley, Kaleb Hendren, AJ Austin, Javelin Rankin, Roman Byers, Darian McClain, Sedrick Morgan, Ethan Walker, Colby Hughes, Cody Hales, Spencer Causby, RJ Bishop, Trevon Wilson and Dalton Blain.

Financial Considerations for Remarrying Later in Life Dear Savvy Senior What are the financial issues that come with remarrying later in life? I’ve been seeing a wonderful man for two years, and we’ve been talking about marriage, but I want to make sure we understand all the possible financial consequences before getting hitched.
other’s estate. If you do want to leave something to your spouse and ensure your heirs receive their inheritance, a trust may be the best option.
Dear Single, That’s a great question. Getting remarried later in life can actually bring about a host of financial and legal issues that are much different and more complicated than they are for younger couples just starting out. Here are some common problem areas you need to think about, and some tips and resources that can help.
You may be surprised to know that in many states, spouses are responsible for each other’s medical and long-term care bills. This is one of the main reasons many older couples choose to live together instead of marrying. Staying unmarried lets you and your partner qualify individually for public benefits, such as Medicaid (which pays nursing home costs), without draining the other one’s resources. But, if you do remarry and can afford it, consider getting a long-term care insurance policy (see longtermcare.gov) to protect your assets.
Getting remarried can have a big effect on your estate plan. Even if your will leaves everything to your kids, in most states spouses are automatically entitled to a share of your estate – usually one-third to one-half. If you don’t want to leave a third or more of your assets to your new partner, get a prenuptial agreement where you both agree not to take anything from the
If you’re planning on living in his house or vice versa, you also need to think about what will happen to the house when the owner dies. If, for example, you both decide to live in your home, but you want your kids to inherit the place after you die, putting the house in both names is not an option. But, you may also not want your heirs to evict him once you die. One solution is

for you to give your surviving husband a life estate which gives him the right to live in your property during his lifetime. Then once he dies, the house will pass to your heirs. Remarriage can also affect the benefits of many divorced or widowed seniors (especially women) who receive Social Security from their former spouses. For instance, getting remarried stops divorced spouse’s benefits. And getting remarried before age 60 (50 if you’re disabled) will cause widows and widowers to lose the right to survivors benefits from their former spouse. Remarrying at 60 or older, however, does not affect survivors benefit. For more information, see ssa.gov/women. Widows and widowers of public employees, such as police and firemen, often receive a pension which they can lose if they remarry. In addition, widows and widowers of military personnel killed in duty may lose their benefits if they remarry before age 57, and survivors of federal civil servants that receive a pension will forfeit it if they remarry before 55. ceiving one of these benefits, check your policy to see what the affect will be. If you are receiving alimony from an ex-spouse, it will almost certainly end if you remarry and might even be cut off if you live together. If you have any children in college receiving financial aid, getting married and adding a new spouse’s income to the family could affect what he or she gets. NORTH STUDENTS PRESENT ‘THE POLAR EXPRESS’- North Elementary School’s third and fourth grade students performed The Polar Express musical for family and friends at the PTO program on December 13. Under the direction of Mrs. Susan Grey, music teacher, the students sang and danced to tunes such as Hot Chocolate, Believe and White Christmas. Students were surprised with a special visit from Santa! The students also performed for the entire school during Polar Express day on Friday, December 14. Kings Mountain Intermediate recognized for positive behavior intervention and support Kings Mountain Intermediate School is one of 13 Cleveland County Schools recognized by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support at a high level of fidelity. Keeping students engaged and maintaining a healthy, productive school environment is more important than ever. PBIS is an approach comprised of intervention practices and organizational systems for establishing the social culture, learning and teaching environment, and individual behavior supports needed to achieve academic and social success for all students. Schools that implement Positive Behavior Intervention and Support fully can expect to become more efficient
and consistent with behavior management, use preventive measures to decrease unwanted behavior, experience a shift in attention to appropriate behaviors and witness a positive climate and philosophy change. Kings Mountain Intermediate and the 13 other Cleveland County schools were among 383 schools in North Carolina to receive one of three levels of recognition. In order to receive any level of recognition from the state Department of Public Instruction, these schools completed an application process that included multiple reports based on behavior and academic data. The Cleveland County schools that received recognition by North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction did so because the faculty and staff
at these schools demonstrated high levels of implementation based on PBIS evaluations and were able to provide data that showed an improvement in both behavior and academic performance. Kings Mountain Intermediate School has been a part of this statewide initiative since 2008, and continues to improve its level of PBIS implementation by evaluating the systems and practices in place as well as adding to those systems each year. To assure that all of the PBIS schools in Cleveland County maintain fidelity of implementation, there are multiple layers of support provided by the district and the state in the form of consultation and training.

THE MEANING of CHRISTMAS Silver bells and twinkling lights Candy canes and chilly nights Santa Claus and stockings filled Presents wrapped for morning thrills... But don’t forget the meaning of Christmas. Carols sung and mistletoe Cider hot and hearts aglow Old friends’ calls, and Cards of cheer Building snowmen in the clear... But don’t forget the meaning of Christmas. Turkey feast and pumpkin pie Yuletide log and Gramps’ winked eye Smiles aplenty gathered ‘round Savory sights and scents and sounds... But don’t forget the meaning of Christmas. A wondrous star, a Baby born Some triumphant, others torn His Birth for us, as was His death Eternal Love, forever blessed... THIS-IS THE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS. by Willy “ACE” Ward

Our own Virginia asks... Dear Editor, I wanted to know if their is a Santa Clause? My friends say he is fake but tell me the truth please. Thanks for your time. Virginia Dellinger Kings Mountain, NC
If there was no Santa I’d surely tell you so But to repeat such a lie would strike quite a blow In the hearts and on the faces all set a-glow Every time we hear his trademark laugh, “Ho, ho ho!” You’ve seen him in the mall, you’ve seen him in the parade And though he wasn’t really there, these sights were no charade He is everywhere at once and yet nowhere at all But in the hearts and in the minds of people big and small He exists as sure as the cold air on a still winter’s night And though we know that’s true by touch, it’s hard to prove by sight Most of life’s great treasures are proven through the test Of faith, hope, love and imagination at its best And, what of elves and fairies and reindeer in flight? Can you by chance or fortune prove them with your sight? I saw elves one Christmas Eve when I was very small, After I heard tinkling bells coming down the hall. Three faces under pointed caps peaked ‘round my bedroom door Three mystic, beautiful faces I’d never seen before They told me it was a dream, they said it wasn’t real But I remember to this day how it made me feel To see those curious faces peak around my bedroom door Those beautiful faces of three elves I’d never met before They looked down at each other, then at me and as I stared They whispered something softly and I shut my eyes tight scared ‘If they know that I’m awake then Christmas will not come And how sad would that be with no presents to and from.’ I prayed they hadn’t seen me wake, I hoped they didn’t know Most of all I hoped they wouldn’t tell the “big guy” so But Christmas still came that morning as it had before Though no one believed those elves I encountered at my door Somehow old Santa didn’t hear that I had seen their faces There is still a little magic in the strangest places The magic lies in loving others and showing them you care And Christmas without Santa is like a garden with no air Yes Virginia, you have my word, there is a Santa Claus To once again repeat that truth gives me no moment’s pause You may not see him coming down your chimney with care But I promise, come Christmas morning, he will have been there And all of the faces of the ones you love and who love you Will be right there to laugh and be in wonderment. It’s true! by Emily Weaver
