Windjammers celebrate 36th Annual Toy Run, spreading joy to children and families The rumble of engines and the spirit of giving filled the air on Saturday, December 14th, as the Windjammers Motorcycle Club hosted its 36th Annual Toy Run. The long-standing event brought together hundreds of riders and community members, all united by a common goal: to brighten the holidays for children and families served by the Children’s Homes of Cleveland County and Core Family Services. The ride which began at the Cleveland Mall and ended at a Children’s Homes site in Lattimore, was escorted by first responders and emergency vehicles for the 13 mile ride that had bystanders on only temporarily delayed but greatly entertained. Among the riders were spotted the Grinch and Santa himself, spreading holiday cheer and drawing waves and smiles from onlookers along the route. This great event and effort has been going on for over three decades, and has been the catalyst behind the Windjammers’ passion to support local children and families in need. This year’s Toy Run was no exception, with participants arriving from across the region to deliver toys, donations, and heartfelt support. The event culminated in a celebration at a local venue, where the community gathered to witness the handover of toys and financial contributions to representatives from the Children’s Homes of Cleveland County and Core Family Services. Both organizations play a critical role in supporting vulnerable children and families, offering services ranging from residential childcare and independent living programs to mental health counseling and adoption services. “The generosity of the Windjammers Motorcycle Club and everyone who participated in this year’s ride is truly

“Thanks to the Windjammers and all of their sponsors and supporters, countless children got to experience the joy and magic of the holiday season.” As the Windjammers Motorcycle Club’s 36th Annual Toy Run came to a close, the sentiment was clear: this is more than just an event; it’s a cherished tradition that embodies the true spirit of the season. In addition to the collection of toys and gifts, the club also raises funds to support the work of the Children’s Home throughout the year and

this year’s gift of $21,000 presented on Saturday December 28th included the proceeds from the sale of a motorcycle that was raffled off and donated back to the club to be sold by the lucky winner, a Mr. Hamorsky of Charlotte. The club’s dedication to supporting local children and families continues to leave a lasting impact, proving that when a community comes together, incredible things can happen. To learn how you too can support children and families please call 704-484-2558 and ask for Peter or email info@ chccinc.org.

A star. I think of all the things God could have used to guide the first worshipers to Jesus, He chose a star. Not some man-made innovation. Not a person or prophet. Not even a voice. But a star. Loud in its light, but quiet in its announcement. Unlike the shepherds who were not looking for the angel, the wise men were always looking to the stars. They GARY MILLER believed within the sky, divine messages could be seen and interpreted. Evidently, they were right. This particular star led these men to its creator and their Messiah. I am of the opinion that nothing just happens. That while I may not understand many things, they all are part of a unique puzzle that would be incomplete without each piece. I believe the same about the birth of Jesus. I believe mangers, shepherds, and stars all mattered then, and they matter now. And while there may be plenty of nuanced theology around each, there is also simple truths. For the star, it is purely a confirmation of what God has always chosen to do – to speak to us through creation, and for creation to lead us to Him. What the wise men understood in their wisdom, is that while creation is a work of art, it is not the author of its own beauty. No person ever viewed a masterpiece without being amazed at the gift of the artist. No sane individual would ever assume any sculpture brought itself into existence. No, the beautiful star of Bethlehem was there to bring its travelers to the beautiful Creator and Star of the world. And for what it’s worth. While the angels proclaimed the message of the Messiah to Jewish shepherds, the star made sure those outside the Jewish circle could have access to the Messiah as well. Without this, we would be singing Joy to the Jews, and not Joy to the World. Yes, that’s what creation does. Then and now. It points us to the artist. The Messiah. The One to be worshipped. Not because He needs our accolades, but because we too are wise men. Wise enough to recognize Who the child really is. Wise enough to recognize a Creator. Wise enough to recognize the Messiah. And that’s what worship really is. And today, creation still points to God, and God still speaks through creation to lead Gary Miller us to Him. Gary Miller has written Outdoor Truths articles for 21 years. He also speaks at wild-game dinners and men’s events for churches and associations. gary@outdoortruths.org

New Chapter As we step into 2025, it’s natural to reflect on the year that was—2024. For some of DANYALE us, it was a PATTERSON year filled with victories and joy, where dreams blossomed, and we cheered our way through life’s wonderful experiences. For others, it may have been a year of monotony, where days blurred into each other, leaving little to write home about. And for some, it might have been a year marred by trials, pain, and loss that sometimes makes us wonder if we’ll ever feel whole again. But here’s the incredible truth: regardless of how your 2024 unfolded, you have the opportunity for a fresh start this new year! The Lord, in His infinite grace, gives us the gift of new beginnings. In Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV), we read, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” What a promise! God not

only encourages us to let go of what has been but also promises that He is actively working on something new. New Beginning As we enter this new beginning, let’s take a moment to consider what a fresh start really means. It’s more than just setting resolutions or making lists of goals; a fresh start is an invitation to renew our spirit and align our hearts closer to God. It’s about seeking His guidance, even in the mundane or painful moments, and allowing His light to illuminate our path. It’s taking time to pause and pray, asking the Lord to reveal what He has for us this year. Maybe it’s a fresh wave of faith, a new relationship, or even a renewed sense of purpose in our work or ministry. Every new year brings with it a clean slate, but it’s up to us to actively choose to embrace it. Philippians 3:13-14 (NLT) reminds us, “No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heav-

enly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: Lord, I praise you as the author and finisher of my faith. Thank you for being with me in the good times and the bad. I am amazed at how you give me a new mercy every morning. In this new year, I ask that you would lead and guide me that I may do your perfect will. I want what you have for me, nothing more and nothing less. In Jesus name - Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD: I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying. Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you! Contact her at www. danyale.com to share a testimony, send a prayer request, or book her for speaking engagements.

Notable events that occurred on December 25 December 25 is Christmas Day, when billions of Christians across the globe celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Though Christmas is likely the first thing people think of when December 25 comes around, over the years many additional memorable and even infamous events unrelated to the holiday have taken place on this unique day on the calendar. • 333: The Roman Emperor Constantine elevates his youngest son, Constans, to the rank of Caesar. This designation establishes Constans as Constantine’s heir apparent. • 1000: Hungary is established as a Christian kingdom by Stephen I of Hungary. • 1046: Pope Clement crowns Henry III of Germany as Holy Roman Emperor. This decision on the part of Pope Clement frees the Vatican from dependence on the Roman nobility and lays the foundation for its authority across the empire. • 1261: Eleven-year-old John IV Doukas Laskaris, who would be the last emperor from the prominent Laskarid dynasty that ruled the Empire of Nicaea, is intentionally blinded on the orders of Michael VIII, making John IV ineligible for the throne. • 1492: The merchant ship Santa Maria, commanded by Christopher Columbus, runs onto a reef off the coast of Haiti. • 1758: German astronomer Johann Georg Palitzsch sights Halley’s Com-

et, which confirms Edmund Halley’s prediction of the comet’s passage. The sighting marks the first passage of a comet that was predicted ahead of time. • 1776: George Washington and the Continental Army cross the Delaware River at night. The crossing enables the army’s attack on Hessian forces serving Great Britain in Trenton, New Jersey, the following day. • 1809: American physician and pioneering surgeon Ephraim McDowell performs the first surgical removal of an ovary or ovaries. McDowell performed the surgery at his home in Danville, Kentucky, removing a 22.5-pound tumor without the use of anesthesia. McDowell’s patient, Jane Todd Crawford, made an uncomplicated recovery and lived another 32 years. • 1826: A drunken riot at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, concludes a day after it began. Known as the “eggnog riot,” the conflict began a day earlier and 70 cadets were implicated, with 20 of them being court-martialed. Jefferson Davis, future Confederate States President, was among the implicated cadets. • 1831: One-fifth of Jamaica’s slaves mobilize in an ultimately unsuccessful fight for freedom. The Great Jamaican Slave Revolt lasts for 11 days and involves up to 60,000 enslaved individuals.

Signs a person is unsafe to drive

This photo of the U.S. Monument was captured in the moonlight. All images were taken on the battlefield at night, illuminated only by colonial lanterns and the moon.

Experience the battleground in a whole new light Kings Mountain National Military Park invites you to join them for a nighttime lantern tour of the battlefield trail during four special events this year. “We will walk the trail under the light of the moon and further light our way with colonial lanterns,” they shared in a press release. “We will discuss the night sky as well as the topics pertinent to the military park.” The tour schedule and topics for 2025 include: • January 4 - REV War 250 & Boys in Battle • February 8 - African American Patriots • March 8 - Remarkable Women of Kings Mountain • April 5 - The Heroes

are still with us The NPS asks that participants please arrive NO LATER THAN 5:45 pm – The program will end by 8:00 pm. The battlefield trail is moderate to strenuous, with some steep hills. From the visitor center to the mountain top, the elevation changes approximately 180'. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The lantern tour will last between 1.5 and 2 hours. Regular visitation at Kings Mountain National Military Park is usually limited to daytime hours. So, make plans now to experience the battlefield by lantern and moonlight.

The end of a calendar year is a time of celebration. From Halloween to New Year’s Day, people attend an array of parties, dinners and other gatherings. Although alcohol is not a vital component of these occasions, quite frequently adult beverages are part of the equation. And when everyone is toasting for one reason or another, it can be easy for people to lose track of their alcohol consumption. When everyone is laughing and reminiscing with drinks in hand, it can be challenging to determine if someone is impaired. However, it’s vital to recognize when someone is adversely affected by alcohol or other substances to the point that driving home would be reckless. That is why it is always important to have someone remain sober to gauge the sobriety of others. Here are some signs that it is best to take away the keys. • Slurred speech: Words starting to spill together is a classic sign that a person is intoxicated. While that person may not realize they are slurring, others who haven’t been drinking should be able to hear the difference between slurring and regular speech. This

person is too drunk to drive. • Poor coordination: Spilling drinks while pouring, tripping over one’s own feet or having trouble getting around also are signs a person has had too much to drink. When coordination is compromised, it is definitely harder to control a vehicle, and possibly deadly. • Fatigue or drowsiness: Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, which means that it can make a person feel sluggish and tired over time. Certain prescription medications or marijuana also may cause a person to feel fatigued and move in slow motion.

This drowsiness is not good behind the wheel, as it may lead to slowed reaction times or even nodding off on the road. • Memory and recall issues: Those who are inebriated may struggle to remember things or even lose their train of thought. Again, the act of driving requires careful concentration and knowledge of where one is going and the rules of the road. If memory issues have popped up, it’s time to collect the keys. • A phone app says so: There are apps for all types of things these days, including ones that can determine

if a person is intoxicated. Some apps monitor speech patterns while others may consider eye movements. In addition, driving simulator apps test if someone can handle being behind the wheel in his current state. Of course, even if these signs aren’t present, a person can still be intoxicated past the legal limit for operating a motor vehicle. Rather than take a chance, if someone has had two drinks or more, it is safer to call a cab or grab a ride home from someone who hasn’t been drinking.

A vocally driven start to your New Year Noel Freidline, Maria Howell and their all-star band return to Clover School District Auditorium on Thursday, January 9 at 7 p.m. to ring in the new year. The Noel Freidline Quintet follows a long tradition of jazz musicians borrowing from styles outside the jazz idiom. The Quintet’s repertoire spans everything from Duke Ellington to Frank Sinatra to Doris Day to The Doors and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Drawing from a lexicon of songs, this quintet uses those magnificent melodies and strong harmonies to masterfully recast, reinterpret and rearrange songs. Bandleader Freidline is fond of saying “We like to give the audience something they have heard, but that they have never heard before.” you have definitely heard before,

NOEL FREIDLINE, MARIA HOWELL

but in a way you have never heard before. A “band” in the truest sense of the word, this vocally driven and exuberantly sophisticated swinging group features Noel Friedline - piano and vocals, Maria Howell - vocals, Billy Thorn-

ton - bass, Juan Rollan - saxophone, and Al Sergel- drums. Combine the group’s fresh musical approach with a rapport and witty banter that harkens back to a bygone era, you have the quintet immersed in their element:

on stage, thrilling audiences at every turn! Individual tickets are $20.00 and will be available at the door the evening of the concert. Call the auditorium at 803222-8018 or visit www. clover.k12.sc.us/csda for more details!

Fun ways to spend the first day of the new year New Year’s Day marks the unofficial culmination of the holiday season, which some feel begins months earlier with Halloween. Retailers have had all sorts of party and decorative goods filling shelves throughout the holiday season, and much emphasis has been placed on celebrating with friends and family. The revelry that comes on New Year’s Eve is hard to match, particularly for those who attend lavish parties or venture to city centers to ring in the new year with others. While January 1 may be a bit more quiet, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy this first day of the year. Plan a hiking excursion There’s a good chance you have not been out hiking for awhile, with your most recent venture having been a leaf-peeping trip. Enjoy the natural scenery during an entirely different season, with much lighter crowds at parks and on trails. If you’ve resolved to exercise more this year, hiking is a great start. Host a relaxing brunch With all the merrymaking the evening before, most people may need a little time to recuperate before heading out. Brunch is a great way to get people fed and help them shake off fatigue from a late night of partying. With a focus on conversation and food, rather than dancing and drinking, this can be an intimate way to set the tone for the new year. Queue up the movies The hustle and bustle of the holidays can be exciting yet exhausting. Take an opportunity on January 1 to slow down for perhaps the first time in at least two months. Ask household members to choose their favorite films, then spend the day binge watching movies. Eat leftovers or order in so no one

needs to leave the comfort of the sofa. Adopt a new pet Many charitable animal groups advise against giving pets as holiday gifts because the idea may be spontaneous and pets require a lot of care. For those who have been thinking of welcoming a pet into the family, this may be a good time to visit an animal shelter (if any are open) or peruse online adoption postings. The slow pace of the post-holiday months might be the ideal time to help an animal get acclimated to a new home. Go shopping It may seem like the average person has exhausted all of his or her shopping energy by this time, but post-Christmas sales are great ways to stock up on holiday decor for next year at reduced prices. If stores are open on New Year’s Day, shop around for ornaments, lawn figures, lights, and more at steep discounts. Then spend the rest of the day sorting and organizing holiday items and discarding those that have seen better days. Help at a nonprofit Volunteer time at a local nonprofit group that delivers meals to homebound locals or one that visits nursing home residents. Start spreading New Year’s cheer early on. New Year’s Day is a good time to spend quality time and have fun with loved ones.

KMLT announces a special Valentine’s production Kings Mountain Little Theatre and Project Local, Inc. announces Mark Twain’s “The Diaries of Adam and Eve,” a special Valentine’s weekend production on February 14 & 15 at 7:30 pm. Mark Twain’s “The Diaries of Adam and Eve” infuses humor into the biblical story of the first couple. Through a unique narrative style, Twain presents alternating diary entries from Adam and Eve. This allows readers to witness their contrasting perspectives on life in the Garden of Eden. Adam, in his entries, is initially baffled by Eve’s presence. “Good deal of fog this morning. I do not go out in the fog myself,” he writes. His observations

about Eve’s curious nature reveal his apprehension. Eve, on the other hand, enthusiastically embraces her surroundings. She names the animals and discovers fire, often leaving Adam perplexed. The portrayal of Adam and Eve challenges conventional views, providing a humorous take on early gender roles. Mark Twain employs a

cleverly crafted “he said/ she said” format. As Adam declares their quiet life disrupted by the “new creature,” Eve’s lively spirit comes alive. Their contrasting traits create tension, yet also promote a touching connection. Performance dates: February 14 and 15 at 7:30 pm. Tickets: Adults $20, Students and Senior Citizens $10. Ticket packages are also available: Adults - $50 (includes two tickets & a $15 Concession Voucher); Senior Citizens - $30 (includes two tickets & a $15 Concession Voucher). KMLT Season Ticket Holders get a 20% discount by contacting the Box Office for info or reservations at tickets@kmlt.org
