Ticket prices go up dollar Admission prices for football and basketball in the SMAC will increase to $6 this season. Admission to football games against a Cleveland County team will be $7.

Kings Mountain receiver Xavier Johnson leaps high to bring down a pass inside the one yard line in last week's scrimmage with North Gaston at the KMHS practice field. Running back Darian McClain scored on the next play. After good showings in their own scrimmage and in the Cleveland County Jamboree, Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers are now anxious to play a real football game. That happens Friday night at Hunter Huss in Gastonia when the Mountaineers officially open their 2014 season. Players have worked just about all summer and they’ve shown tremendous improvement in pre-season practice. Last week, they outscored North Gaston in a two-team scrimmage at KMHS; and Friday night they defeated Polk County 28-7 in the opening game of the Cleveland County Jamboree at Gardner-Webb University.

Jamboree games last for just one half, though, and it’s important that the Mountaineers play well for four quarters. “I’m pleased, head coach Greg Lloyd said of his team’s showing last week. “There’s no question we have improved. We’re doing some good things. The Mountaineers had a balanced attack in both of last week’s events. The offense played well, and the defense appeared to be much better than it was last season. “I’m happy with the way we executed, Coach Lloyd noted. “We ran our offense well and showed some spark defensively. We ran to the ball well and tackled well. We missed some assignments. The offensive line

doing. They are very disciplined. The Huskies were impressive in the Gaston County Jamboree with a win over 4A West Charlotte. “Huss is a very good team, Lloyd said. “They are strong on both sides of the ball. They look like they’re hungry and are going to come ready to play. The quarterback throws the ball well and their receivers can catch it. Lloyd said the key to the Mountaineers’ success will be to keep improving in every phase of the game. “We have to take care of the ball, he said. “We need to tackle well. We can’t let them get loose. I believe this is going to be two pretty good teams playing Friday night. NOTABLE - Kings Mountain fans will see some familiar faces on the Huss sidelines. The Huskies’ offensive line coach, Kareem Marshall, and defensive line coach Julius Curry were two of the the star linemen on the 1998 Mountaineer team that played for the state 3A championship.

needs to come off the ball better. We just need to keep improving. The Mountaineer coaches were able to get all of their players into the scrimmage with North Gaston, and most of them in the jamboree. “It’s just hard to get

everybody into a jamboree, Lloyd said. “It’s only a half of football. But we threw the ball well, made some nice catches, and ran the ball well. Kings Mountain jumped out front early with a touchdown run by sophomore running back Darian McClain. Quarterback Brandon Bell also scored on a run and threw touchdown passes to Jake Merchant and Tico Crocker. “We did some good things, Lloyd said. “We’re still a long way away but we’re getting there. Lloyd expects a big test Friday night at Hunter Huss, which has 15 starters returning off a team that went three-deep in the state 2A playoffs last year. The Huskies lost their four-year running start Kerrion Moore to graduation, but they have a host of good backs returning including All-Conference quarterback Andrew Jordan. “They are extremely fast, says Lloyd, who watched them on film over the weekend. “They look like they know what they’re

Mountaineer football experienced team looks forward to an exciting season With over 20 players back that started at one time or another last season, Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers are looking forward to an exciting football season. The Mountaineers started a large number of young players last season, and many others were called up during the year to replace players that went down to injury. (Knock on wood), if everybody stays healthy this year the Mountaineers should have their best season since 2008 when they made it to the Western Regional championship game and finished 11-4 overall. There are only three starting players on this year’s team that did not start at least one game last season. They are right guard Max Peterson, who is up from the JV team; left guard Kenny Williams, who moved from Gaffney; and safety Shawn Adams who is returning to football after sitting out the past two seasons. Joining Peterson and Williams on the offensive line are center Corey Hester, left tackle Graham Keeter who is a pre-season AllState choice and is already receiving college offers, and right tackle Keenan Baker. Gage Kornegay, who started on the JVs and was later called up to varsity last year, is a versatile linemen who will see time at tackle and guard. Cooper Short, the returning long snapper, will backup Hester at center. The line isn’t huge, but has increased its quickness, and that should make a host of returning skill players very effective. The Mountaineers probably have their best receiving group in years. Senior Xavier Johnson, who was injured in last year’s Cleveland County Jamboree and finally got back for the last two games, and sophomore Jake Merchant, who missed about half of last season with injuries, should be two of the best split ends around. Johnson already holds the school’s receiving record for a single game (231 yards on 11 catches last year against East Burke) and could become the school’s career reception leader. To date he has caught 72 passes for 1,150 yards and should threaten Terrance Young’s career mark of 1,558 yards. Merchant hauled in 32 passes for 418 yards before going down to injury midway of the season last year. He has three full years to excite the Mountaineer faithful. Dylan Sims, who played quarterback and linebacker on the JV team last season, has been moved to receiver. He has made great strides in pre-season practice, as has Cameron Morgan, who was a receiver and defensive back on the JVs last year. Starting at slot receivers will be Tico Crocker and Adams. Crocker was Kings Mountain’s most versatile player last season and played every down on offense, defense and kick return teams. He was the team’s top receiver with 48 catches for 604 yards and rushed for 204 yards on 43 carries. He also led the team in scoring with 48 points. With Adams re-joining the team to join Crocker, Merchant and Johnson, the Mountaineers’ receiver corps could be their best ever.

Julian Coulter, a college prospect, and Chance Frederick, whose season last year ended in the second game because of an injury, will share time at Roy Back (tight end). Both are good blockers and pass receivers. Dillon Frederick, who missed last season, will add depth. The Mountaineers have two returning starters at quarterback – senior Brandon Bell and sophomore Darren Burns. Burns was called up for several games midway of the season when Bell was injured. Bell led the Mountaineers last year in rushing (772 yards on 131 carries) and passing (130-for-248 for 1,568 yards). He became the 13th quarterback in KMHS history to throw for over 1,000 yards. While Bell is an excellent running quarterback, his rushing numbers may not be as high this year if everybody stays healthy. Sophomore Darian McClain, who gained 406 yards in seven games last

year before suffering a season-ending concussion in the Crest game, has the legs and upper body strength to become one of the school’s all-time best running backs. And he has some good backups in Dillon Frederick and Jair McCluney. Burns will be the JV’s starting quarterback but will be “eight-quartered on varsity, meaning he will be dressed out on both Thursday and Friday nights. If he competes in eight quarters on varsity, the coaches would then have to decide if he will finish the season on JV or varsity.

If everyone plays up to their potential they’re going to light up the scoreboard. “We have a lot of skill people that can make big plays, Coach Lloyd said. “We’ll run the ball well and throw it well. The offensive line is the key. If they do a good job, we have to skill people to go with it. Defensively, the Mountaineers will be in a new 43 scheme and Lloyd and staff are anxious to see how they do with that. Again, if they avoid injuries they should do very well. Lloyd is looking to five

Lady Mountaineer volleyball team facing rebuilding task There’s one word to best describe this year’s Kings Mountain High School women’s volleyball team: Rebuilding. The Lady Mountaineers return only three players from last year’s team which won the SMAC championship and went three rounds in the state playoffs. The returning players – Kayla Bolt, Gracie Hunter and Angel Petersen – are good, but they will be on the floor with a host of sophomores and juniors who have never competed on the varsity level. “This is definitely a rebuilding year,” says Coach Ashley Pridgeon. “We have only three people back and the sophomores and juniors played JV ball. We’re practicing three times a day trying to get them up to speed

to compete on varsity.” Losing players like Mary Asgari, Natalie Fedyeschyn, Taquisha Smith and Logan Smith – the latter now in her freshman year of volleyball at The Citadel – is a big-time hurt. But the Lady Mountaineers can boast in the fact that one of their returnees, Kayla Bolt, was last year’s SMAC Player of the Year.

Bolt led the team in kills and aces. Hunter led in digs. “Everyone knows what Kayla’s done in every game she’s played,” said Pridgeon, “so our game plan will pretty much be getting the ball to her.” The only underclassman that may have wrapped up a

Mountaineer soccer has its largest turnout ever Kings Mountain High’s soccer team is excited about the coming season as they have their highest turnout ever. Head coach Dan Potter and assistant/conditioning coach Ted Trahan have been working with up to 35 players two to two and a half hours a day this summer and have had an average daily turnout of 27. Potter said Trahan, who is also the new conditioning coach for the Mountaineer football team, has made a tremendous impact on the players’ conditioning. Avery Turbyfill is the only returning coach on the JV team and Potter is working on adding another one. “With our biggest turnout ever we’re trying to find the funds to purchase some additional uni-

forms, Potter said. “That’s a very good problem to have. The Mountaineers lost seven seniors off last year’s team, but they have their largest freshman turnout ever and Potter expects that to pay big dividends in the future. The Mountaineers recently suffered a severe blow when returning starter Weston Harmon tore his ACL and will be lost for the season. Some of the other returning starters will be the nucleus. They include brothers Robbie and Brian Lysek. Both are “very good players, according to Potter. “We expect a lot out of them this year. Returning starter Max Sappia is a good striker. “He’s very dangerous, Potter said.

Mountaineer runners ladies have experience and depth; men low in numbers Kings Mountain High’s girls cross country team has depth and experience and could be in the running for the SMAC championship this fall. The boys team is just the opposite. At this point there aren’t many participants and they probably won’t be mentioned as a contender. But, things happen on the course and they do have some runners that have the potential to finish high in the individual standings. Fifth-year head coach Rayvis Key has been working with the runners twice a day. Usually, they run the KMHS course in the mornings and the Gateway Trail in the afternoons. The Lady Mountaineers have 17 runners and many of them have years of experience and a tradition of finishing high in meets. “I can’t say we’re predicted to win the conference,” said Coach Key, “but we hope to be in the top three. That would be highly successful.” Heading the list of returning runners are seniors Cassie Morton and Mackenzie Smith. Morton has been All-Conference every year in high school and was Big South 3A Runner of the Year her freshman and sophomore seasons. “They have to provide a

lot of leadership,” Key said. Swimming champion Kaitlyn Moss has joined the team and the Mountaineer ladies are excited about that. Other runners that should be very competitive include Virginia Dellinger, Mariah Roberts and Emily Crouse. “We’re looking for others to help out, and maybe we can fight for the conference,” Key said. “This is the best girls team I’ve had in my five years coaching here. We have major depth. We’re blessed to have large numbers that will cause us to be competitive.” Other members of the team are Caroline Foster, Zoe Barnette, Erica Carpenter, Kassidy Hamrick, Tiffany Harris, Carmen Henwood, Jessica Lovell, Evey Morris, Amanda Mullen, Brooke Patterson, Maria Silaphet, Montanna

Smith, Lori “McKay” Williamson and Meridith Wyte. The KM ladies finished third in the SMAC last year behind Draughn and Shelby. They would love to move to the front this season. Coach Key has two guys returning who were consistently near top of the standings at last year’s meets. Senior Collin Foster has several years running experience and Jordan Moore is a two-time team MVP. Jacob Edmondson returns and has greatly improved over the summer, Coach Key said. Key’s son, freshman Bryson Key, “will hopefully fill some shoes” left by graduated Will Boyles. Other members of the team are Devin Ayscue, Matthew Burris, Gabriel Lankford, Austin McKee, and Marcus McKee.

WOMEN’S TENNIS – Pictured above is the 2014 KMHS women's tennis team. Front row, left to right, Tiffany Harris, Maddie Lutz,Amber Belcher, Carrigan Leatherman and Cheyanne Stirewalt. Back row, left to right, Hallie Hunt, Hannah Mosley, Coach Rick Henderson, Kayla Penner and Makensi Corn. Not pictured, Kayla Condrey. Kings Mountain's women's tennis team hopes to see improvement over last year's record of 4-4 in the South Mountain Athletic Conference and 6-5 overall. "I'm being optimistic this season even though we lost three veteran players," says seventh year coach Rick Henderson. Perennial power Shelby is the pre-season favorite, and Henderson looks for Crest to give the Lady Lions a tough run for first place. The SMAC consists of 2A teams Shelby, Chase, East Rutherford, R-S Central, Draughn and East Burke and 3A teams Kings Mountain, Burns and Crest. The Lady Mountaineers have to replace graduating senior starters Hannah Christenbury and Alyssa Greene; and MC Dellinger,

a rising senior who started last year, has opted to play soccer. The Lady Mountaineers still have some depth. "We will rely on last year's comost valuable players Maddie Lutz and Kayla Penner to lead the way and hopefully surprise some teams in the SMAC," Henderson said. Lutz and Penner earned their way to the Western Regionals as a doubles team for the past two seasons. Other returning starters are sophomore Carrigan Leatherman and senior Hannah Mosley. Returning players looking to break the starting lineup include Tiffany Harris, Kayla Condrey and Cheyanne Stirewalt. Incoming freshmen Amber Belcher, Hallie Hunt and Makensi Corn look

promising as well, Henderson said. "They have a very good chance to break into the starting lineup if they continue to progress like I think they can." Injuries have hurt the Lady Mountaineers over the past. Both Lutz and Mosley had shoulder injuries last year. "Mosley recently had surgery on her shoulder during the off-season," he said, "and Lutz still continues to nurse an ongoing injury that has plagued her well over a year or so." Kings Mountain opens its season today at Burns. "We beat them 7-2 last year, but we will not take the Lady Bulldogs lightly," he said. Kings Mountain plays its first home match Tuesday, Sept. 2 against Forestview.

The call is out for more women golfers for the Kings Mountain High School team. The Lady Mountaineers will open their season September 2 at home against other schools from the SMAC 2A/3A, but Coach Kevin Moss has only two players and that’s not enough to qualify for a team championship. The returning players are

good ones, Maddison Lutz and Sara Scism. Both qualified for the Western Regional Tournament last season. It was Scism’s first trip to the Regional and Lutz’s third. Both made the All-Conference team and both have played since ninth grade. Neither player qualified for the State Championship

last year, but Lutz qualified her sophomore year. “Hopefully, we will have a couple more come out this season, said Coach Moss. The KM ladies will begin practice Monday, August 25 at 3:30 p.m. at Kings Mountain Country Club. Ladies interested in playing should contact kemoss@clevelandcountyschools.org.

FOOTBALL: experienced Mountaineers look forward to an exciting season From page 3B Kornegay. Outside linebackers are McClain, Dillon Frederick, Dwayne Capps, Bryan Sanders and Seth Ortega. Marquise Camp, Chris Robbins and Xavier Johnson will be on the corners with Adams, Crocker, Merchant and Sims seeing duty at safety. “With this new scheme I think we will be faster,” said Coach Lloyd. “We’re not overly big but we are much quicker. Most of these guys have played, they’ve aged and they’re stronger. There’s improvement there, for sure.”

With more depth, Lloyd also hopes to see improvement in the secondary. “We have to be smart in the secondary,” he said. “We’ll definitely be better on defense.” Looking to the season, Lloyd says the “usual suspects,” Crest and Shelby, will be the teams to beat. But, don’t expect those two perennial powers to win without a fight. “I think we’ll be right up there with them,” Lloyd said. “If we play good we will be competitive.” The SMAC will be balanced, though, which means the Mountaineers will have to be at the top of their game

every Friday night. “East Rutherford and Burns could be very good,” Lloyd said, “and Chase has a very good team. R-S Central, Draughn and East Burke will be good.” “I like the way our team has worked,” he added. “If we stay away from injuries we’ll be good. We’re going to get a good rotation going. One man is not going to have to carry the ball 30 times and the quarterback is not going to have to throw it 30 times. We’re optimistic with our depth.” Lloyd is confident that a healthy Mountaineer team can go deep in the 3AA playoffs.

“We’re ready to go,” he said. “The players have worked really hard and we’re ready to see some fruits of our labor. This team is good enough to play on Thanksgiving if they con-

tinue to work and get better.” The Mountaineers went through a lot of hard times last season, but all of the injuries that caused a young team to struggle could turn

out to be a blessing. “We have 24 or 25 lettermen back,” Lloyd noted. “It’s pretty incredible that we had to bring up so many players. But they’re so much better because of it.”

Mountaineer Coaches - Trainers

COACHING STAFF – Front row, left to right, Matt Bridges, Ted Trahan, Michael Roberts, Kenny Bridges, Mark Latham and Greg Lloyd. Back row, Nathan Mellon, Donnie Mace, Dustin Morehead, Kevin Cruise, Alex Randall, Craig Short and Mike Harris.

Coaching changes for 2014 There will be numerous changes in coaching assignments for the Kings Mountain High football team this season. Head coach Greg Lloyd announced that previous head JV coach Jon Fleisher has left KMHS to become a math teacher and assistant football coach at Gaffney High School. Kenny Bridges has been promoted to the head JV coaching position and has given up his duties as head wrestling coach to concentrate on his new position. Brent Bagwell is returning to the Mountaineers to serve as offensive coordinator for the JV team. Bagwell, a former standout player at KMHS and NC State, is a former college coach and also helped former Mountaineer assistant Bruce Clark take the 2007 North Gaston team to the state 3A championship game. Another new addition to the JV staff is offensive line coach Nathan Mellon. He is coming to Kings Mountain from R-S Central, where he was an assistant varsity coach. Other members of the JV staff will be Matt Bridges, defensive backs; and Alex Randall, kickers and receivers. Randall will also serve as kicking coach on the varsity level. A new addition to the varsity staff is former Mountaineer girls basketball coach Mike Harris, who is coaching defensive backs. He was an assistant on the JV team last year and previously coached at KM Middle. Other varsity assistants are Michael Roberts, quarterbacks; Craig Short, running backs; Kevin Cruise, offensive line; Mark Latham, linebackers and defensive coordinator; and Tyrese Brooks, receivers coach.

FOOTBALL TRAINERS – Left to right Schae Whisnant, Alexis Hines, head athletic trainer Alan Ridenoure, Maddie Lutz and McKenzie Gibson.

VOLLEYBALL: team faces task of rebuilding From page 4B starting spot is setter Sara Pasour. “She was the setter last year on the JV team and did a good job, Pridgeon noted. “We had so many seniors and two good setters on varsity so we really didn’t need a third setter. One thing Kings Mountain fans will notice early on is that the Lady Mountaineers won’t have the size they’ve

had in the past. “There’s no real height out there, Pridgeon said. “We will primarily be a defensive team. We’re not too strong offensively except for Kayla. Pridgeon expects Draughn and East Burke to be the teams to beat in the conference. She hopes the Lady Mountaineers will improve as the season progresses and can make another run in the 3A playoffs. “It’s going to be a struggle

to do as well as we did last year, she said. “I hope they can progress fast. The Mountaineers were scheduled to open their season Monday at East Rutherford and will play their first home game this afternoon against Burns. JV action starts at 4:30. Kings Mountain will compete in a tri-match with Hickory and South Iredell Saturday in Hickory and will travel to Shelby Monday.

SOCCER: has its largest turnout ever From page 5B Sam Liss is a strong kicker and Potter expects him to do well, along with returner Arrick Rithiphong. Jordan Sweezy is one of the team’s most versatile players. “He can play anywhere on the field, Potter says. “He is a solid player. Potter expects Shelby to be the team to beat in the

SMAC, with Chase a close second. “Those two tied last year and have a lot of people returning, he said. “But we’re right in the mix. There’s nobody else that we couldn’t beat. We could possibly end up in third place. Shelby and Chase are both 2A teams, so if KM does finish third it would mean the Mountaineers

would be the top 3A team in the conference and will be at home for the first round of the state playoffs. “We lost seven good seniors, Potter noted. “And Weston was also a good player. They’re not going to be easy to replace, but we have 14 incoming freshmen and they’re really going to help us in the future. We probably won’t

have a freshman starting out the season on varsity but some of them could be pulled up. Some of them are very solid and will contribute. There are four kids in that freshman class that are probably better skilled than most of the players on varsity. We should be really good in a couple of years. It’s really encouraging.
