KMHS valedictorian picks Wake Forest; math a key interest The top student with strong interests in math and music had trouble deciding between two North Carolina schools DAVE BLANTON dave.kmherald@gmail.com

For Will Boyles, a senior who aced nearly every assignment and test in every course he took at Kings Mountain High School while taking on an array of demanding extra-curricular projects, one question remained. Where to attend college? The soft-spoken valedictorian couldn’t decide between two remaining favorites: Wake Forest University or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Boyles, who has a head for math and wants to possibly make a career out of it, was feeling a strong pull toward Wake Forest because it boasts a prestigious doctoral program in mathematics. He also likes that the Baptist-affiliated school in Winston-Salem has a relatively small student body size at about 4,800 undergraduates. But he had a hard time ruling out North Carolina’s flagship public school, where he would have joined 18,500 other undergraduates. “It has great academics and great op-

portunities, he said recently while talking about the decision. Boyles had until May 1 to decide between the two. As April was coming to a close, he finally reached a decision. “I felt more at home at Wake Forest, the senior said recently, adding that he’ll be heading to Winston-Salem in early August to marching band practice at the central North Carolina private school. Boyles wasn’t sweating the call, but he admits he’s spent much of the winter and spring thinking about which school to attend because “it’s a decision that will affect me for the rest of my life. In high school, Boyles set himself apart by making top grades – he had a 5.07 weighted GPA as graduation approached -- and getting involved in nearly a dozen extracurricular projects and clubs. He was president of KMHS National Honor Society organization, served as drum major for the school’s marching band where he played the tuba and was senior class secretary and

Will Boyles treasurer. Boyles also ran track and cross-country and was a member of the Math Club and the Beta Club. Outside of school, he was active at First Baptist Church and started the Cleveland County Jazz Band at the end of his sophomore year. Along with mathematics, Boyles has a sousaphone-sized passion for music. For his senior project, he arranged the Chicago song “25 or 6 to 4 for guitar. The hit 1970 tune by the

jazz-rock fusion group is itself about the art of songwriting. Boyles concedes he takes after his parents when it comes to two of his favorite pursuits. His mother, Laura, teaches advanced math at the high school. His father, Bruce, is a former high school band director who relocated to Kings Mountain when he joined the Cleveland County Schools as its superintendent in 2006. Both father and son will be making an exit from the local school system this year, with Bruce Boyle set to retire June 30 to take a full-time teaching position at Gardner-Webb University. “They’ve both been a huge influence on me, he said, adding that they’ve mostly “stayed out of the (college decision). The high school senior rattled off a list of schools he knows some of his friends have decided on: Appalachian State University, UNC, N.C. State University, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. But in the end, Boyles said he needed to pick a school that best suits

his needs as a student with big dreams. At Wake Forest, he said he plans to pour himself into his studies and outside projects with as much vigor as he did in high school. If has any doubts or fears about the college experience, they are minimal. He concedes he’s a little unsure of what classes he’ll need or want to take in his first semester, and if he’ll be able to manage his time as well as he did in high school. If he has any regrets about his very full high school experience, it’s that he didn’t do more earlier. “I wish I had participated in more extra-curricular activities in my freshman and sophomore years. Like most students Boyles is looking ahead to the summer with anticipation. He’ll embark on a mission trip to Honduras with his church, a new experience for the college-bound ace student. Another church trip will keep him in the south and there’s a family vacation planned, but he isn’t yet sure of the destination.

Baucom has a lot to celebrate Harris has an ELIZABETH STEWART lib.kmherald@gmail.com

When he was a freshman Timmy Baucom was worried that he would not be a member of the 2014 graduating class at Kings Mountain High School. Homebound the second semester of his freshman year at KMHS, Timmy credits his complete recovery from Burkitts Lymphoma, a type of leukemia, to God and the prayers of Kings Mountain people at churches all over the community. He credits his ability to keep up with school work to an English teacher. Baucom also credits a radiologist at Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem doing his CT scan with

helping him choose a vocation after high school. Timmy aspires to be a radiologist technician and will enroll at Cleveland Community College. “Mom found a Timmy Baucom lump on my neck in January 2011 and it was biopsied and I was diagnosed with a form of leukemia and took chemotherapy for six months," said Baucom. Doctors gave him the good news that he was cancer free in May 2011. He returns to the hospital for six month checkups.

Baucom is the son of Mark and Roxanne Baucom of Kings Mountain. He has two sisters, Melissa Hunter, who works in a tax office in Gastonia, and Brittany Baucom, who teaches in the After School program at Bethware School. The family is active in New Buffalo Baptist Church in Grover. Timmy is ready to take a vacation with family at the beach. He works at Subway in Gastonia, formerly worked at Subway in Kings Mountain. "I have lots to celebrate on my 18th birthday May 24," he said. This summer he plans just to hang out with friends and cut grass, he said. Baucom said that History has been his favorite subject See BAUCOM, 10C

Her visit to North Carolina State University at Raleigh for STEP, a textile exploration program and a tour of the College of Textiles, inspired Emily Harris, 18, to pursue a career in fashions and textile management. Cindy Eskridge, chemistry teacher at KMHS, had told the class about the

six-day program and Harris, a KMHS senior, was ready to experience everything she could learn about textiles and quickly enrolled. "I want to be a fashion buyer," says the AP honor student who has cheered the high school football team four years and has excelled as a discus thrower for the track and field team four years. HARRIS: has an eye on fashion From page 7C dancing, and is active in Patterson Grove Baptist Church. Emily has won the North Carolina Textile Foundation Kimbrell Scholarship to study in a textile degree program at NC State. The Kimbrell Scholarship is valued at $10,000 over four years. A scholar athlete at KMHS, Emily was a junior marshal as well as a Renaissance Gold Card Holder for four years. She is a member of Students Against Violence Everywhere, Students Against Drunk Driving, French Club, Beta Club, National Honor Society, and Math Club. She enjoys working with her church nursery. Emily served as captain on both teams of cheerleading and track and field. Daughter of Michael and Angela Harris of Kings Mountain, Emily has one brother, Cameron Harris, who is a rising senior at

Davidson College. Their father co-owns National Roller Supplies in Gastonia and their mother teaches French at Kings Mountain High School. “I am excited about learning about fashion and textile management, s a y s t h e popular senior. H e r family is very s u p Emily Harris portive of her career choice. Harris is looking forward to graduation from Kings Mountain High and going to college. Graduates of the Fashion and Textile Management program at NCSU are broadly educated in the physical, behavioral and mathematical sciences with a focus on fashion and textile management that will prepare students for leadership roles in industry and gov-

ernment. By choosing fashion as her specialty, Emily will study every aspect of the textile and apparel business related to fashion from understanding how fabrics are made to knowing how to market the final product. At NCSU she will be given the entrepreneurial skills to build a career in the industry. Emily learned from the initial exploration program that she will receive a solid business plan that is as important as a dazzling design. The Fashion Development and Product Management course focuses on design and development of fashion products from jeans to bridal gowns with trend analyses, coloration, silhouette selection and other skills and concepts to develop fashions that appeal to consumers. Fashion careers are often highly competitive and difficult to break into, but Emily is serious and ready.

Pain is temporary but brotherhood is forever. That’s what Jacob Miller's Kings Mountain High School friends said after the young football player was seriously hurt in an automobile accident July 23, 2013. “I didn't know if I would be able to walk, much less graduate with my friends in the Class of 2014 at Kings Mountain High, said Miller, who broke his neck, was out one season of football and one season of wrestling, but bounced back, came to class in a wheelchair and a halo on his head. He is a “miracle, according to friends and his dad Randy Miller who helped him learn to walk again. He also credits a teacher who helped him keep up with his studies. Jacob plans to look for a job after graduation June 7 and

The 2014 KMHS yearbook features a two-page picture spread about Jacob, the story about the accident and remarks by his coach and school mates who spoke about his courage and remarkable recovery. The football team, coaches, and students sported shirts in Jacob's honor, recognizing him at games even when he couldn’t play on the field. Despite obstacles, Jacob used the opportunity to motivate the team. “I told them, you’ll never know when you won't be able to play. “Jacob handled it very well. He's a courageous guy. He used his accident as an inspiration; he refused to give up. He used it as motivation to get back in school and graduate, said Coach Morehead. “I think Jacob used the experience to get closer to God. He inspired me to work hard and never give up, said senior Austin Champion. ''Seeing Jacob being able to come back as quick as he did made me want to work harder and play football for him, said Senior Elijah Whitaker.

Jacob said the accident also serves as a lesson to anyone who can drive or is in a car with someone to stay focused and avoid any distraction. Seniors Collen Queen, Kahill Hopper and close friend Jacob Miller were on their way to Shelby on July 23, 2013. “I was talking to Jacob and our lives changed instantly due to a split second of distraction, said Collen. The truck veered into grass and despite the driver's attempts to correct, flipped for nearly 800 feet. “The ceiling came down on my neck, I tried to stop it, said Jacob. Collen and Kahill, suffering from minor injuries, managed to help push the truck over and off Jacob. In spite of Jacob's claims of “don't worry about me, I'm fine, they later realized that Jacob's injuries were far worse. He was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center and underwent surgery for a bulging disc that was pushing on his spine. The surgeons put a plate, a spacer, and two screws into Jacob's spine to relieve the pressure. But did any of that stop Jacob? With the help of family and friends he went back to school in a wheelchair, attended ball games, and is ready to go to work. When Jacob Miller's name is called at commencement exercises he and his special “brothers will be smiling.

Ellis accepted to U.S. Air Force Military Academy ELIZABETH STEWART lib.kmherald@gmail.com

The Class of 2014 at Kings Mountain High School has probably an even number of male and female graduates. Katie Ellis's freshman cadet class at the United States Air Force Military Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado

will be a class of 1,000 cadets - 3 men to 1 woman. Nominated by US Senator Kay Hagan and US Congressman Patrick McHenry, Katie will begin basic cadet training June 26 and plans to major in civil engineering and a career in the United States Air Force. "It's not easy to get into an academy and I know it will be

even tougher to make it through graduation but I am confident it will be worth the effort," says the 18-year-old KMHS graduating senior who fell in love with the academy when she and her parents visited and started the process last March, which resulted in her nomination. Her schooling scholarship

Katie Ellis will miss giving riding lessons to young friends. Katie is pictured at Little Pond Farm in Shelby with Luke Rumfelt and Luke’s horse Scoobie. Clemmer and Sam Clemmer of Bessemer City. "I have already been to the academy for orientation and met some of the cadets," said Katie, who is excited. The versatile and attractive student who stands 5 feet 5 inches tall gets plenty of exercise at school and on the farm. She ran cross country all four years in high school, is active in Future Farmers of America, Beta Club, Theatre Club, and French Club, and in El Bethel United Methodist Church. The Ellis family farm includes five horses and Katie enjoys trail rides and gives riding lessons to children where balancing exercise is part of the training. She grooms the horses and has a favorite, Kramer, a gray Quarter horse. She hopes that Kramer will become part of her life as a cadet if she finds

a sponsor family, where she can board her horse and then ride Kramer when she is on break from school. Katie's senior project this year was “Horsin’Around or horse interaction with kids, and she gave riding lessons to young people from ages 5-16 at Little Pond Farm in Shelby. She accumulated 15 hours working with the younger students while riding, helping them tack their horses, mount and instruct. She led trail rides and explored the farm.Families in the Colorado Springs area volunteer to be assigned to cadets to enable the young people to take breaks from military lifestyles. Family weekend is Thanksgiving and the Ellis family plans a vacation to where else? Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Bridges touts AR program DAVE BLANTON dave.kmherald@gmail.com

Rebekah Bridges’ senior project tackled accelerated reading at the intermediate school level. She participated in a March Locked in with a Book program at the Kings Mountain Intermediate School, where she helped lead a trivia game and otherwise helped teachers at the school organize. Q: Your senior project is about reading. Are you yourself a book lover? What kind of books do you like to read? A: I definitely love to read books! I love Harry Potter the best and enjoy books by John Green a lot too, but I'll read most anything that gets me hooked. Q: What did your senior project set out to demonstrate? Or what did you seek to learn about accelerated reading programs? A: My senior project set out to show how Accelerated Reader is successful in getting children to read who would not normally do so on their own. It also wanted to encourage more of the children to read and enjoy what they're reading. Q: What was the most interesting thing you learned at the Locked in with a Book event at the intermediate school? What time did you get home that night? A: One interesting thing I learned is that it is possible to get over one hundred 5th and 6th graders to read silently at the same time. Another is that if given the opportunity, they will buy more candy than they can carry. I got home about 12:30 that night. Q: What are some of your favorite subjects in high school? A: As you might expect, I love English in school. I owe a lot of this to some of the amazing teachers I've had, like Mrs.

Champion and M s . Greenlee. I also love performing arts a n d Rebekah Bridges these subjects. I am an involved member in the band, chorus, and theater programs. Q: Can you tell us about your plans after high school, including the summer? A: This summer I plan on going to my older brother's wedding in June and my older sister's wedding in July. Hopefully getting to spend some time with my high school friends before we all go off to college. Then in August, I plan on moving in at Gardner-Webb University for their band camp and earning a degree in English and getting my teaching license. My goal is to teach high school English. Q: What was it like working with your mentor Tonnie Bearfield, the media specialist at the KMIS? A: It was great working with Mrs. Bearfield! She and I were close when I was at KMIS and then in middle school when she was one of the coaches for the Battle of the Books team. She was a great mentor and very helpful throughout the whole process. Q: What visual aid will you use in your presentation? A: I plan to use a powerpoint presentation with pictures from the event on it. Q: What advice would you give to underclassmen who are looking ahead to do their own senior projects? A: I know it's cliche, but don't procrastinate. Pick something that you're interested in. If you're having an event like a workshop or what I did, have it as soon as you can to help relieve some of the stress.
