Mountaineer Days Heritage Festival was a blast

Last weekend, the Mountaineer Days Heritage Festival created wonderful memories in downtown Kings Mountain. Families enjoyed spending quality time together, listening to music, having fun, and relaxing in the waning days of fall. Friends laughed and listened to the music in the warm afternoon sun, as they leisurely enjoyed each other’s company.

The event kicked off at 10 a.m. with various activities for everyone, including shopping, rides, food trucks, music, contests, games, exhibitions, and more.

“Mountaineer Days” wouldn’t be complete without firearm exhibitions by folks dressed in Revolutionary-period uniforms. It is Kings Mountain, after all! This town took its name from the famous battle 244 years ago. Here, we can embrace our heritage since so many who live in this area are descendants of patriots who turned the tide of success in favor of the Americans.

Miss Mounties of all ages mingled with the crowd and spread goodwill and smiles throughout the day. The Kings Mountain Optimists Cheer Teams performed, keeping the crowd in high spirits. The girls wore pink bows in

ing and spreading cheer with everyone.

their hair, which made a bold statement as they relaxed and enjoyed the day with their parents, family, and friends. Several times throughout the day, they

A tractor-drawn hayride harkened back to the 1950s as Scott Neisler drove his red McCormick Farmall tractor through downtown, taking the route down W. Gold Street, Tracy Street, Railroad Avenue, and back to Patriots Park. A horse-drawn hayride was also available to take you farther back in time. And while it wasn’t designed for riding, a buckboard wagon was displayed with fall flowers, bringing everyone back to when our

contests were held. At 11 a.m., judges gathered to make difficult decisions on various skills, from baking to candies to cross-stitch entries. One thing is for sure: Kings Mountain folks love their crafts. There were gardening and canning contests, too. And it made it hard for the judges to decide. Probably the easiest decisions were those with only one entry. And then there was that colossal pumpkin a young lad entered. It was so big he couldn’t lift it on his own!

Kids had sack races and

cers also took their turn carrying eggs on spoons. They quickly walked the distance of the course, laughing the entire time, and not a single one dropped their egg.

Mountaineer Days Heritage Festival has come and gone this year, but the snocones and barbeque will live on in our memories. Spending time with family and friends on such a beautiful day makes memories that will last a lifetime for the young and old who participated. Enjoy more scenes from the festival on page 5A

Governor Roy Cooper signed House Bill 149: Disaster Recovery Act of 2024 into law on Thursday, Oct. 10, allocating $273 million in initial storm-related relief. The state may approve additional funds later after state and local officials can determine the full scope of damages.

“Recovery for Western North Carolina will require unprecedented help from state and federal sources, and this legislation is a strong first step. Hurricane Helene caused catastrophic damage but also showed the resiliency of North Carolina’s people and its communities, and we must continue the bipartisan work to help them build back strong,” said Cooper in a statement about the signing.

Under the new law, the General Assembly finds that Hurricane Helene was a powerful Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 140 miles per hour that made landfall on September 26, 2024, along Florida’s Gulf Coast and severely impacted the entire Southeastern United States. Hurricane Helene caused widespread heavy rainfall in excess of 30 inches in some areas, record flooding, and significant loss of human life and property in North Carolina. In addition, the Gen-

eral Assembly finds that, on or about September 16, 2024, Potential Tropical Cyclone #8 (PTC8) was an intense weather event that severely impacted Brunswick and New Hanover Counties and caused excessive rainfall in those counties.

The General Assembly also finds that, as a result of Hurricane Helene, the following has occurred: Western North Carolina endured record-breaking rainfall that created several 1,000year flood events in several counties, devastating the people, infrastructure, businesses, and schools of entire communities. (1) On September 28, 2024, 25 counties in North Carolina were declared a major disaster by the President of the United States under the Stafford Act (P.L. 93288), approving individual and public assistance for affected counties. (3) North Carolinians have lost their lives, loved ones, homes, communities, houses of worship, businesses, jobs, and way of life. (4) Countless homes, buildings, and properties have been destroyed. (5) Entire communities have lost power, water, sewer, communication, and other essential services due to the devastation. (6) Over 400 roads and bridges were damaged and closed to traffic, including Inter-

state 40. (7) Landslides and flooding have cut off entire communities from outside help and communication. (8) Tornadoes were generated across the State as Hurricane Helene passed, causing significant damage in areas outside of the storm’s immediate path.

In response to the storm damage, the General Assembly created the Hurricane Helene Disaster Recovery Fund. – The Hurricane Helene Disaster Recovery Fund (Helene Fund) was established. The purpose of the Helene Fund is to provide necessary and appropriate relief and assistance from the effects of Hurricane Helene, consistent with the provisions of this act and subsequent legislation addressing the impacts of Hurricane Helene. The Helene Fund shall be maintained as a special fund and administered by the Office of State Budget and Management to carry out the provisions of this and subsequent acts necessitated as a result of Hurricane Helene.

Pieces of Kings Mountain History

Bess-Alice Phifer celebrates her 107th birthday

This article was originally published in the Kings Mountain Herald in 2017. It has been updated to reflect the passage of seven years.

On Sunday, October 13, Bess-Alice Hambright Phifer turned 107. During the last century and seven years, she has seen humanity’s best and worst. And, through it all, she has walked confidently in her faith.

Three Hambright sisters lived to celebrate their 100th birthdays: Louise Hambright Roberts, Aileen Hambright Cantrell, and Bess-Alice Hambright Phifer. The trio was featured in ELYSIAN magazine in December 2016. “It is extremely rare to be a centenarian, let alone find three from one family,” said Gary Small, director of the UCLA Longevity Center in Los Angeles.”

The sisters credited good genes, a balanced diet, and plenty of exercise as the secret to a long life.

Bess has outlived her two sisters and has an amazing life story.

Early Life Growing up on the family farm near the Kings Mountain National Military Park, Bess Hambright had a strong sense of self. Her parents were Tom and Mable Weir Hambright. She had seven siblings: Louise, Aileen, Lucy, Sue, Anderson, Lawrence, and Tom. Their lives revolved around family, school, and church, and their roots run deep in the community.

Bess knew her grandparents and often visited them in Grover and Kings Mountain. Her Uncle Gill Hambright lived in the home currently occupied by the Patrick family on Battleground Avenue.

On her mother’s side of the family, she is related to the Weir and McGill families; Grandfather Ted Weir was the postmaster. “At that time, the post office had moved out of Mauney Brothers Store and was located on Battleground Avenue,” Phifer explained. Her dad’s family descends from the Dickson and Hambright families. The Hambright line goes back to Colonel Frederick Hambright, commander of the Lincoln County Militia during the battle of Kings Mountain.

Bess’ oldest living relative during her childhood was Grandmother Sallie Dickson Hambright (1849 – 1934) who often visited the family at the farm. “She and her

youngest daughter would come from Grover to spend the weekend. They would always bring a big bag of good cookies,” Bess recalled.

Her family belonged to Antioch Baptist Church, and she attended school in a one-room schoolhouse her mother founded. The family provided lodging for the teacher in their home.

Bess’ earliest memories are of picking peanuts; chores were a common part of farm life. While in middle school, Bess and her sister, Aileen, took on more responsibilities. “My sister and I milked cows before we went to school. At that time, my mother and daddy were selling milk in those tin cans, and the dairy would come by and pick them up. Between us, we milked five cows. We’d take care of the milk to keep it cooled before school. And then we’d do it again when we came back home.”

Before the depression, they had a tenant farmer who helped with farm work. But the depression brought change. The tenant farmer moved on, so family members took on the work. Bess did everything from milking cows to picking cotton and hoeing corn.

When Bess was just 12, she attended the onehundred-fifth anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. The year was 1930. President Herbert Hoover was the keynote speaker. Her mother had responsibilities during the celebration, so Bess and her siblings were free to wander.

She remembers the throngs of people. “The President’s speech was good; I remember seeing the speakers stand. Most of all,” she says, “I remember having the whole day free with all those people I didn’t know”

While in her junior

and senior years at Blacksburg Centralized High School, Bess played basketball and participated in class plays. In her senior year, she was a founding member of the very first Beta Club in the United States in 1934 - 1935. After high school, she attended Asheville College and earned a teaching degree. She taught 6th graders at Waco Graded School and coached their high school women’s basketball team.

In the early part of World War II, Bess also worked at the Shell Plant in Charlotte, “making 40 mm shells. I inspected the little percussion cup to make sure it had powder in it. I did it at night on the third shift.”

According to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Library, “The U. S. Rubber Company was locally called the ’Shell Plant.’

During World War II, the plant became one of the biggest employers in the county, particularly in the employment of women. These women were Mecklenburg’s equivalent of ‘Rosie the Riveter.’ This was an extremely dangerous workplace to work, and the employees took their jobs seriously.”

The plant went into operation on December 17, 1942 - just ten days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

The War Years

With the war raging in Europe and the Pacific, Bess was about to face the biggest challenge of her life: serving in the American National Red Cross from 1943 until 1946. A co-worker at Waco suggested they apply for the American National Red Cross together.

Both the Principal and Superintendent supported their decision, but only Bess was accepted for service. The requirements were that you had to be 25 years old and have a college degree. She cred-

its her acceptance to her coaching experience. She joined in Atlanta, Georgia and went to Washington, D.C. for training.

“When I got to Washington, Hazel Frye was there. I was in training with Hazel for six weeks. We thought we’d go overseas together. I certainly didn’t have any idea I’d be going to the Pacific. I knew Hazel a little bit because mother and daddy were friends to her parents.” Hazel was assigned to Europe and Bess was assigned to the Pacific.

Bess began her service on the island of Hawaii at a Red Cross Rest Camp that had been established during World War I. “We had everything: a golf course and tennis courts. We had about 200 bicycles. All the men seemed to like to ride bikes. We had archery. And we’d take the men by van around the volcano and the bird park.”

Every five days, five hundred men would arrive at the rest camp for five-days of rest and relaxation. “We worked from 7 am to 10 pm,” said Bess. Every five days, a new group of men would arrive.

“The men appreciated having a few days of rest. I didn’t realize it meant so much to them. They had such a poor life. Even when I was there, I knew it was rough. They would tell you a few things. But I didn’t realize it was quite as bad as it was.”

By this time, Bess had received four promotions. She had “taken over as the head of the camp, seeing that it was all taken care of. I was over the Red Cross work, not the food,” she said. “It was a pretty big deal.”

While working in Hawaii, Bess met her husband-to-be, Marriott Phifer, a Kings Mountain native. Due to her duties, she didn’t see him much when he was at the camp. When asked if they dated in the Pacific, Bess replied, “When they told me they needed me to go to Guam, I got a week off. I spent a right smart time with Marriott that week.”

While in Guam, Bess was assigned to a field hospital processing the troops freed from prison camps. “Most had spent four or five years as prisoners. And to see those fellows…” her voice trailed off. “I stayed up all night trying to process who they were, to gather a little information about them.

“They looked like death standing, practically every one of them. I had seen many wounded

because I stayed at the field hospital at Guam. There were 200 – 300 doctors there. I ate in the same places the men ate. All the wounded fellows were there in that hospital. They couldn’t go home because they were waiting for transportation.

“All those fellows and no complaints from them,” she pauses. “That was the thing I noticed the most; they didn’t complain. Some were missing legs and arms. None in the beds could get up.

“I helped set up a place where the guys could have a magazine to read or listen to a radio. These guys hadn’t had radios or anything for years. Some of them didn’t even know who they were.”

One day, Bess found a 40-millimeter shell casing on the ground and immediately knew it was from the Charlotte Shell Plant. The men at the field hospital converted it to a candle holder for her in their shop and she has kept it as a memento all these years.

When discharged, Lieutenant Bess-Alice Hambright spent the next 28 days traveling home to her family on Hambright Road. Her title was referred to as an “assimilated rank.” Beginning in WWI, it was deemed appropriate that Red Cross workers be given both rank and uniforms.

According to the Official U. S. Bulletin, Volume 1, issued on June 29, 1917, “The purpose of conferring military rank is to indicate to members of the land and naval forces that the Red Cross workers enjoy the confidence of the President as Commander in Chief of the Army and of the American National Red Cross and that the authorities bespeak for them the cooperation, courtesy, and respect due to persons designated for such important duties to humanity.”

After the war

Bess was discharged on May 13, 1946. Six weeks later, on June 26, 1946, Bess-Alice Hambright married Marriott Phifer in a double wedding at Antioch Baptist Church with her sister, Lucy Hambright Kinard, and her husband, James Herman Kinard.

Marriott’s family belonged to Boyce Memorial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, so they joined that congregation. She has now been a member for 78 years.

Together, Bess and Marriott have four children: Dr. Reta Phifer, Doyt Phifer, Connie

Savell, M.D. Phifer Jr., and one granddaughter, Lesley Phifer.

Bess eventually returned to teaching. During her career, he taught at Waco, West, and Central and retired after 27 years of educating the community’s children.

At the time of the 2017 interview, Bess Phifer was a member of the Kings Mountain Study Club and an avid reader, reading four-five books a week. She recently presented to the club the book Lucky 666, The Impossible Mission, by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin. It was the first book she ever read that told the story of the men she helped during her service with the Red Cross.

Bess served as a Sunday School teacher for 4th and 5th graders at Boyce Memorial ARP Church, was active in Circle, knitted shawls for Hospice, and worked in the gift shop at Bonclarken (a conference center located in Flat Rock, North Carolina, operated by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church). She also works in her yard every day, weather permitting, noting the importance of exercise.

What most impressed me about Bess Phifer is her faith. She never feared serving in the Red Cross, saying, “I wasn’t scared a bit. I felt like I was where I needed to be. I never felt like I shouldn’t have done this.”

Throughout her life, Bess Phifer has walked confidently in her faith. She wants her children to “stay close to the Lord.” When asked what got her through the difficult times, Bess replied without hesitation, “I lean on the Lord all the time, every day. If you didn’t have him to lean on, you’d be in bad shape, wouldn’t you?”

The Hambright sisters credited their long lives to good genes, a balanced diet, and plenty of exercise. These factors undoubtedly played a large role in their longevity. But as I spoke with Bess, I realized there was another critical factor in that equation. In Bess’s case, I’m confident faith played the most crucial role of all.

Happy Birthday, Bess-Alice!

What do you do when you are in misfortune?

A LOOK AT JOHN CHAPTER 9

There are two families in a neighborhood in North Carolina. One of the families had a tree fall on the shed at the back of the house. The tree is so large that it crushed the shed and everything in it. Neither the shed nor the thing therein is salvageable. Another family has a child that is delayed in speech. The other children in the family have a normal speaking capacity.

In regular life, people would quickly ascribe it to sin, but with Jesus’ presence and correction, it’s God preparing to use these times and circumstances for bring glory to His

name. So don’t give up because of misfortunate or “bad luck”. You are a chosen vessel. A miracle is about to happen and you are to be used for God’s glory.

Jesus is walking by and finds a blind man at the temple in Jerusalem. The man is asking for alms at the temple as many of the handicapped would do to generate resources for their living. They knowing that the Jews coming tot the temple for worship would seek to fulfil the almsgiving commanded in Deuteronomy 15:8,11, presented their containers for coins and other items that they would use to live and survive. The man in this narrative was specifically identified as a person who was born blind.

His parents were living and were very aware that he was at temple seeking always from the worshippers. The blind man or his parents might have shared his story with people around the temple.

Looking at the blind man, the disciples asked if the blindness was caused by the man’s sin or his parents’ sin. Jesus responded to them that the blindness was not due to anyone’s sin. It is a blindness that has a larger purpose in God’s plan. God is going to use this man’s blindness to demonstrate His power, grace, and compassion. Following the correction of the perspective for which the man was blind, Jesus spat on the ground and made a clay mud with the dirt. He puts it on the man’s eye and tells him to go the pool of Siloam and was

it off. The man is obedient. He goes and washes the mud off and he sees. He celebrates his new sight since his birth. This is a wonderful news for the man, his parents, and his community. It is a great glory to God and a challenge to the religious people of the day.

Looking at the narrative, we could draw few spiritual lessons here to guide our lives: 1. While affliction may be due to sin of an individual or group (1 Corinthians 11:30; Psalm 38:3; James 5:16). It may could be with the man healed at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:14).). Jesus is saying now that it may not always be the case. One example of this is the story of Job’s afflictions. He was not suffering because of sin (Job 1:11-12). There are times that our suffering of misfortune is the base for

God working to demonstrate

His power and glory. Remain close to God in your crisis. He will heal you, and He will properly define for you your situation and shame your enemy.

2. The second lesson is that we should always be obedient to God’s directions and actions. Has this man not obeyed Christ and go the pools and wash the mud, he wouldn’t have been healed. Don’t expect change in disobedience.

3. The third lesson: your situation is not intended for nurturing your pity and indifference. It’s for God’s glory that you are experiencing this misfortune. You are selected as the instrument for the demonstration of God’s glory.

4. The fourth lesson: Just as Job’s friend and the disci-

ples of Jesus were declaring sin as the cause of the affliction, so will your enemies, friends, family, and community will tell you that sin has brought affliction upon. Man’s perspective is always different from God’s. Therefore, it is wise to always wait for God, be faithful to God as Job and the blind man. Therefore, misfortunate or what others may refer to as “bad luck” may come upon you but Jesus Christ is the right interpreter and remover of all misfortune. Once we turn to Him, he will remove our misfortune or “bad luck”. He is passing by. He is not far from you, He is ready to heal you. He will never hurt you. Obey His command your misfortunate circumstance will be washed away.

two fatalities from storm-related incidents involving fallen trees. As of Thursday, October 10, Duke Energy confirmed that only 13 customers remained without electricity, significantly improving from earlier outages. Schools reopened on Monday, October 7, signaling a return to normalcy for local children.

The Broad River, which caused severe upstream flooding, passes near Boiling Springs, a town of about 4,800 near the South Carolina border. Power and water services have been largely restored. Town Manager Zachary Parker stated that street flooding remained minimal while many basements were flooded. The wastewater treatment plant briefly flooded, but the waters receded a few days later.

“We didn’t have bad flooding, but we did have a good number of trees down,” Parker told Carolina Public Press. “Most of our damage came from vegetation, with trees taking down power and communication lines.” Parker praised the town’s swift response. “We reassigned a significant portion of the workforce to debris removal and clean-up, as well as to assess stormwater and road infrastructure damage. We’re now working with our insurance company and FEMA on the next steps.”

According to Duke Energy, debris removal continues to be the county’s primary recovery project. As of October 10, just four customers were still without electricity.

Gaston County, located on the southeastern edge of the disaster zone, reported one death due to falling tree debris. Despite this tragedy, the county fared well in terms of overall damage. Schools

reopened by Tuesday, October 1, with operations resuming swiftly. County officials have warned residents about potential delays in landfill operations and advised them to document storm-related expenditures for FEMA assistance applications carefully.

Lincoln County faced significant challenges, including uprooted trees, downed power lines, and flooding in rivers, creeks, and streams. Power has mostly been restored, and most debris has been cleared. However, minor clean-up efforts are still ongoing.

Catawba County: The Lookout Shoals area along the Catawba River experienced the worst flooding in Catawba County. Around 100 homes were directly impacted by river flooding, with 50 others sustaining significant storm damage. One storm-related fatality occurred when a 4-year-old girl died in a car crash on a closed, flooded road. Duke Energy reported

that only one customer remained without power in the county.

In Burke County, a man died after his truck struck a fallen tree the day after the storm. Debris removal is still a significant part of recovery efforts. The county will begin free debris pickup on Monday, October 14, with services continuing over the coming weeks. FEMA representatives have been visiting affected neighborhoods, assisting residents with recovery applications, and connecting them with relief organizations.

In McDowell County, major flooding along the Catawba River caused significant damage, including one death due to a collapsed house. The county hired contractors to clear storm debris from public roads in Old Fort, Marion, and state secondary roads. FEMA opened a disaster recovery center in Marion on Friday, assisting storm

survivors. Residents can also access comfort stations for showers, laundry, and other services at Old Fort and Marion churches.

Rutherford County, west of Cleveland County, saw some of the worst damage from the storm. Floodwater from the Broad River devastated the communities of Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. Emergency efforts remain ongoing as the county deals with widespread destruction.

The Lake Lure Resource Center has been set up to offer various services, including shower trailers, restrooms, hand-washing stations, and charging outlets. A public Starlink WiFi network is also available. However, cell service remains unreliable, and boil water advisories are in effect for residents of the town’s water system.

The county has reported three storm-related deaths and is currently investigat-

ing 30 missing persons cases. Welfare checks continue, with 1,722 customers still without power as of October 10. Schools reopened on Wednesday, October 9, but with a two-hour delay.

“Some roads in the upper part of the county are still unfit for school buses,” said Rutherford County Schools spokesperson Richard Garland. He added that some students were unable to attend their first day back. “Despite the challenges, it was great to see smiling faces and get kids back into a normal routine. For families still without power, the school provided a place where kids could access power, running water, and hot meals.”

As the clean-up continues across the region, officials urge residents to remain patient and informed about ongoing safety improvements and service restoration efforts at their locations.

borne eight kills and three blocks; and Tipton six serve receptions, 16 digs and 13 service points.

The Lady Mountaineers were scheduled to host Crest in the last regular season game last night. A victory would give them a perfect conference season. They carried a 13-0 conference and 23-1 overall record into the contest.

The first round of the state 3A playoffs will begin on October 19 and as the BSC champions KM should be at home. The playoffs continue October 22, October 24 and October 26. The Western Regional championship will be played

KM falls to Raiders, at Cramer Friday

Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers probably saw their Big South 3A Conference championship hopes go down the drain Friday when they fell to the unbeaten South Point Red Raiders 28-21 at Gamble Stadium.

The Raiders will end their season with conference battles against Ashbrook this week, followed by Forestview and North Gaston. If the Raiders run the table to earn the top seed from the BSC and KM rebounds to win upcoming games against Cramer and Ashbrook the Kings Mountain at Crest game November 1 should determine second and third place.

The Mountaineers never led last week but were in striking distance until their last drive ended with three incomplete passes from the Raiders’ 28-yard line.

The game began with South Point driving the opening kickoff 73 yards for a 7-0 lead on quarterback Patrick Blee’s four-yard run and Wilson London’s PAT.

South Point’s offensive scheme was obviously to keep the ball for long drives and take time off the clock. That initial drive ate up all but 2:41 of the first period.

The Mountaineers answered quickly, though, as Jayden Gash returned

the ensuing kickoff to the Raiders’ 49 to set up a six-play drive capped by a Josiah Hill three-yard run and Matt Rhom’s PAT. TJ Armstrong’s 28-yard pass to William Vaughn got things going. Hill covered the final 21 yards on five carries.

Neither team could get anything going on their next possession. The Raider defense had the Mountaineers backed up to their own eight yard line on a fourth and 11 and Vance Johnson’s punt with 7:11 on the clock was returned to the KM 31. From there it took just five plays for South Point to score with Chaynce Ford going in from eight yards out and Wilson London adding the PAT for a 14-7 lead that stood until halftime. Ford was the go-to man all night and finished with 29 carries for 193 yards. As a team the Raiders piled up 337 yards rushing and 73 passing.

The second half started with KM’s Kayden Williams returning the kickoff to the Raiders’ 46. A twoyard run by Hill and a 44yard touchdown reception by Jayden Gash followed by Rhom’s PAT squared things up at 14-all.

A South Point penalty following the ensuing kickoff backed the Raiders to their 10-yard line but they

covered the 90 yards in nine plays to go up 21-14. It took just three carries by Ford to get to the KM 26 and five plays later Peyton McCarn caught a 14-yard touchdown pass.

Kings Mountain battled back to tie the game on a 75-yard drive that took 10 plays. Gash had receptions of 40 and 12 yards, the latter putting the Mountaineers on the Raider 21. Hill took care of the rest in three carries with the final one coming from five yards out

The Raiders drove the ensuing kickoff 83 yards in seven plays to score their final touchdown on an 11-yard run by Ford with 11:20 left in the game.

The Raider defense held the Mountaineers to three and out and they had to punt from their own 25 with 10:31 left on the clock. South Point didn’t score again but did run the clock down to 5:32 before losing the ball on downs at the

Kings Mountain had a potential tying or winning TD drive going and made it to the South Point 21 before losing the ball on downs.

The Mountaineers’ defense forced the Raiders to punt and got the ball back at South Point’s 49-yard line with 1:23 left. Two receptions by Gash got them to the South Point 28 with 22.2 seconds left but three straight passes were incomplete, the latter in the end zone.

six catches for 118 yards and Vaughn caught four for 69 yards. Hill led the KM rushing with 71 yards.

The Mountaineers will try to bounce back Friday when they travel to Stuart Cramer for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Their final home game will be October 25 against the Ashbrook Green Wave. They go to Crest on November 1 and will have a makeup game at North Gaston November 8 to end the regular season.

Bolt lost 6-3, 6-4. In doubles, Frye and Simon won 8-0 and McSwain and Bolt 8-0. Tipton and Bolin lost 8-2.

The ladies dominated the Big South Conference tournament on October 9-10. Five players qualified for the Western Regional which will be held October 18. In the conference tournament, Tipton was seeded third and defeated players from South Point and Crest but lost to the #1 seed from Crest. In doubles, Frye and Seanna Simon finished first. They defeated players from Hunter Huss 8-0 and Crest 6-0, 6-1.

McSwain and Bolt were seeded fourth and won matches against the 10th seed from Huss 10-1 and Stuart Cramer 6-0, 6-1. In doubles, Frye and Simon defeated North Gaston’s #3 seed 6-2, 6-1 and the #2 seed from Forestview 7-5, 6-4.

“This was the championship match and it sure was a good match,” noted Coach Rick Henderson. “The duo of Frye and Simon claimed their first conference championship doubles crown.” McSwain and Bolt lost to the #2 seed from Forestview 6-2, 6-4.

“We would have had both

our doubles teams playing one another for the conference championship, but unfortunately the Forestview team was a little stronger,” Henderson said.

McSwain and Bolt dropped down to the consolation match against the #3 seed from North Gaston, but showed their strength and overpowered the North girls 6-4, 6-7 (8-10, 6-2) and earned third place .

“It’s not every year that one tennis team has five players going to the Regionals, but I’m excited for out student athletes and I’m looking forward to see them play next week,” Henderson said.

“We have all of our players back next year with the exception of a newcomer to the game of tennis, senior Brooklyn Whitlock,” Henderson noted.

“Not only do we have our Regionals going on next week, but having won the Big South 3A Conference championship we have our first round of dual team tournament starting on Monday, October 21,” Henderson said.

“I feel very confident that we will play our first round match at the KMHS tennis courts (beginning at 4 p.m.).

I’m inviting all tennis enthusiasts to come out and watch because they will see some fantastic tennis.”

“I’m so very proud of our team this year. They have practiced hard and have been committed since back in the latter part of June and middle of July.

Kings Mountain High’s JV football team won a hard-fought 7-0 game over the South Point Red Raiders last week in Belmont.

Khareem Coleman ran for 117 yards on 19 carries and scored the only touchdown in the second quarter on a three-yard run. Refugio Gonzalez added the PAT.

The KM defense led by Cam Houser, Christian Jarrett and Isaiah Rote was able to stop South Point on back-to-back quarterback sneaks at the one-yard line to secure the win.

Kings Mountain is 3-0 in the Big South Conference and 5-1 overall heading into a home game against Stuart Cramer Thursday at 7 p.m.

How to Find Legal Help When You Can’t

Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend any programs or organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to seniors?

I believe I need some professional legal help but have limited income and very little savings. Almost 70

Dear Almost,

Whether you need help drawing up a will or a contract, or you’re facing some sort of legal jeopardy or dilemma, hiring an attorney can be expensive. Most lawyers today charge anywhere between $100 and $300 an hour. Fortunately, there are a number of different programs and organizations that offer free legal advice and may help you find a free or low-cost attorney. Here’s where look for help in your area.

Legal Aid: Directed by the Legal Services Corporation, legal aid provides free legal assistance to low-income people of all ages. Each community program will differ slightly in the services they offer and income qualifications. Visit LSC.gov/find-legal-aid to locate a program near you.

LawHelp: Powered by Pro Bono Net, a national nonprofit organization, LawHelp.org is a terrific resource that will help you locate free legal aid near you, get answers to your legal questions and even fill out legal documents. These free services are for people with low to moderate incomes.

Free Legal Answers: This is an online program created by the American Bar Association that matches low-income clients with volunteer lawyers who agree to provide brief answers online for free. This service will not answer criminal law questions and it’s not available in every state. See ABAfreelegalanswers.org to look for a program in your state.

Senior Legal Hotlines: There are around 30 states that offer senior legal hotlines, where all seniors over age 60 have access to free legal advice over the telephone. To find out if this service is available in your state, go to ProSeniors.org and click on “Resources,” followed by “U.S. Senior Legal Hotline Directory.”

Senior Legal Services: Coordinated by the Administration on Aging, this

service may offer free or low-cost legal advice, legal assistance or access to legal representation to people over the age of 60. Your Area Agency on Aging can tell you what’s available in your community. Call the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 to get your local number.

Local Law Schools: More than 200 university law schools across the country have pro bono programs that offer free legal assistance provided by law students, who are supervised by their professors. See AmericanBar.org/groups/center-pro-bono –scroll down and click on “Directory of Law School Public Interest and Pro Bono Programs” to locate a program near you.

Pension Rights Center: This is a nonprofit consumer organization that provides free legal assistance for problems with pension, 401(k) or other retirement plans. Go to PensionRights.org/find-help to search for help in your state.

National Disability Rights Network: This is a nonprofit membership organization that provides legal assistance to people with disabilities through their Protection and Advocacy System and Client Assistance Program. If you are disabled, visit NDRN.org to find help in your state.

Other Options: If you can’t get help from one of these programs, or find that you aren’t eligible, another option is to contact your state or local bar association to see if there are any volunteer lawyer projects in your area or if they can refer you to a lowfee lawyer. To contact your state or local bar association, go to FindLegalHelp.org.

Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior. org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

Stateside Legal: For military members, veterans, and their families, StatesideLegal.org provides access to free legal information and legal assistance in your area.
