Arson victim identified

Just after 9 a.m. on the morning of October 1, 2022, the Kings Mountain Police Department along with the Kings Mountain Fire Department responded to 1004 Cansler St. in reference to reports of a fire. Upon arrival there was no visible signs of a working fire however, there were significant signs that a file had occurred. Due to the unknown occupancy of the residence, fire personnel made entry to the home and discovered the body of a male victim among the fire debris. Since this discovery, detectives with the Kings Mountain Police

Department have sought to find and contacted a relative of the victim to notify them of the death before releasing the victim s name. On Monday October 11,2022 notification was confirmed.

The victim has been identified as Donald James Dougherty, a white male of Kings Mountain, date of birth February 5, 1959. Cause of death is still pending.

Childress sworn in as new police chief

On Friday, October 14, Gerald Childress was sworn in as City of Kings Mountain’s newest Police Chief. Childress and took over KMPD on Monday, August 29. Chief Childress’ wife Marsha pinned on his badge during the ceremony as family, friends, and staff looked on.

Childress served as the Administrative Lieutenant for the Town of Spindale. Prior to that, he served as the Deputy Chief of the Town of Mooresville for two years after a lengthy career with the Mooresville Police Department.

Childress has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology from Lenoir-Rhyne University and a Master of Arts in Justice Administration from Methodist University.

A statement from the City of Kings Mountain shared that Chief Childress is excited to join the Kings Mountain Police Department and the Kings Mountain community.

With over 26 years in municipal law and extensive administrative experience, he brings solid leadership to the Kings Mountain team.

Woman’s Club announces fall vendor event

School Board candidates’ forum

On Tuesday, October 11 at 6 p.m. on C-19, Cleveland County Board of Education school board candidates participated in a live forum at Cleveland Community College’s studios at the Bailey Center. Andy Dedmon and Mike Philbeck moderated the forum.

Eight candidates are running for four seats during this election cycle, seven of whom participated: Danny Blanton, Aaron Bridges, Phillip Glover, Dena Greene, Ronnie Grigg, Meghan Hoppes, and Coleman Hunt. Walter Scott Spurling was unable to at-

tend.

The questions were developed by a committee representing the forum sponsors and were not available to candidates prior to the event.

Candidates were asked a variety of questions: Questions ranged from their top three priorities for Cleveland County Schools, their support of mandatory masks and remove learning, whether they supported the quarter-cent sales tax, their thoughts on the next top three priorities for CCS, whether they favor partisan elections on even number years, and what if anything should be done to improve the quality of school meals.

Shirley Jane McMurry

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Shirley Jane McMurry, 87, of Shelby, NC, went to be with the Lord on October 11, 2022 at Peak Resources in Shelby, NC.

A native of Waco, NC, Shirley was the daughter of the late Fibra and Sarah Self Poston and was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Bill T. McMurry. She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, John and Howard Poston and her sister, Lillie Lackey.

She graduated from Waco High School and Shelby Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She worked at Kings Mountain Hospital for 36 years where she served in the I.C.U. and C.C.U. Mrs. McMurry was an active member of First Baptist Church where she served on numerous committees and worked in the kitchen providing meals to countless people. Shirley loved traveling and often collected bells from her destinations. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend whose kindness and love will be missed dearly.

She is survived by her sons: Bill K. McMurry and wife Paulette, Gastonia, NC and Dwayne R. McMurry and wife Dawn, Kings Mountain, NC; brother: Larry Poston and wife Sara, Canton, NC; grandchildren: Scott Webb (Melissa), Brian McMurry (Shiuan), Noah McMurry (Alexis Johnson), Candice McWhirter; great grandchildren: Ellie Webb, Briggs Webb, Kennedy Webb, Kai McMurry, Meili McMurry, Matthew Madden, Jaxon Carter.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at 12:00 PM at First Baptist Church with Reverends Shane Doty and Jonathan Bundon officiating.

Visitation was held on Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 11:00 AM to 11:50 AM prior to the service in the Stained Glass Room of First Baptist Church.

Interment was held in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, NC.

Joe Billy Cornwell

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC –Joe Billy Cornwell, Jr., age 72, of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2022.

Born on October 4, 1950 in Lincoln County, North Carolina he was the son of the late Joe Billy Cornwell, Sr. and Della Kay McGinnis Cornwell.

Survivors include his loving wife of 34 years, Elizabeth “Beth” Cornwell; children, Angie K. Holder (Grant), Bill Cornwell (Melissa); step-daughter, Angie Dawn Nichols (Pat); grandchildren, Kelsie Davis, Anna Holder, Garrison Nichols, Michael H. Cornwell, Jackson Nichols, Sydney Cornwell; sister, Diane Russell (Dale) and his beloved fur baby, Bella. Joe was preceded in death by his parents along with his brother, Michael C. Cornwell.

A true sports fanatic, Joe had a lifelong history with a love for the game.

A graduate of the class of 1969 Kings Mountain High School, Joe was an active and dedicated high school football player. His love for sports led him on to a career in broadcasting, coaching and officiating.

Joe was the local sports broadcaster for the Asheville TV station and he also coached little league baseball and officiated high school sporting events.

In 2012, Joe and his wife Elizabeth moved to North Myrtle Beach from Huntersville, North Carolina. After a while of coastal living, Joe became a member of the OD Shag Club. Joe also enjoyed fishing, riding his golf cart, traveling and just having a good time with his family and friends. Joe and Beth visited all 50 states in the United States, 44 of which they traveled to in their RV.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Lee Funeral Home and Crematory. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

James H. Beheler

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – James H. Beheler, 73, of Grover, NC, passed away on October 15, 2022 at Wendover Hospice in Shelby, NC. Born in Rutherford, NC, he was son of the late George Beheler and Margaret Alice “Edna” Propst Bridges and was also preceded in death by son James “Bo” Beheler, daughter Renea Thomas, step-son Tony Earl Taylor, and brother Ronald Beheler.

He was formerly employed in textiles at Spectrum Yarns in Kings Mountain NC and Armtex in Gastonia NC.

He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and Sons of the Confederate Veterans. He enjoyed working on lawnmowers and cars. He was generous to everyone he met including buying food for the local school children.

He is survived by his son: Chris Beheler, Granite Falls, NC; daughters: Mary Brock (Jason) Kings Mountain, NC and Amber Beheler Grover, NC; brothers: Kenneth Bridges (Monica) Harrisburg, NC and Johnny Propst, Spindale, NC; sisters: Tilly Foster, Grover, NC and Jane Powell (Wayne) Bostic, NC; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 3:00 pm in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain NC with Rev. Billy “Bill” Jackson Nance

Billy “Bill” Jackson Nance, 79, passed away on Monday, October 03, 2022 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Stanly County to the late Crawford and Nezzie Long Nance. He is also predeceased by one daughter, Paula Lea Nance and eight siblings.

Bill leaves behind to cherish his memories his daughter, Debra Nance Cox and husband, Thomas H. Cox, Jr. of Belmont, NC; granddaughter, Brooke Elaine Cox; wife, Mary Ann Murphy; step-children, Tony Murphy, James Murphy and Kristie Murphy Watts; step-grandchildren, Kevin Brittain, Megan Murphy, Nathan Murphy and Dalton Watts; step-great-grandchildren, Vince Oliver Brittain; brother, Bruce Clement Nance.

Bill served in the National Guard and also worked in various Accounting roles. He was a loving husband and a very loving father and grandfather. He loved taking care of his family and friends. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He loved his dogs and working outside in his yard and was never without a project that he thought needed to be done.

Peggy Wilson Patterson

Peggy Wilson Patterson, age 96, died in Greensboro, N.C. on October 11, 2022.

Peggy was a loving mother and good friend to many.

Peggy grew up in Kings Mountain, N.C., and attended business school in Asheville N.C. She married and moved to Charlotte, then Greensboro with her husband and two children.

Peggy managed the Credit Union at WBTV in Charlotte. In Greensboro she was the office Manager and bookkeeper for a business supply company. She had resided at Friends Home at Guilford since 2013.

Peggy was an active member at Westminster Presbyterian Church and volunteered in the office. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed music, reading, and was an avid bridge player for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Haskell and Selma Wilson, her brother Jerry Wilson, sister Betty Campbell, and husband Jack Patterson.

Peggy is survived by her son Mark Patterson, daughter Ann Starr, and sister Jackie Wright.

A memorial service and columbarium placement will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Greensboro N.C. at a date to be determined.

Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office releases Sept. stats

Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office released their September statistics.

During the month, there were 8,552 calls for service, 134 arrests, 1,238 papers served including 327 criminal, 565 civil, and 346 subpoenas.

One hundred eightyone incident reports were handled: 162 were criminal and 19 were non-criminal.

Three Hundred – four-gun permits were issued, along with 133 concealed carry permits.

Narcotics seized were 90,176.9 DU pills, Cocaine 3.2 g, Marijuana 85.8 g, Meth 349.39 g, and Heroin 7.15 g. The monthly average of inmates handled by the sheriff’s office were 244 males and 46 females.

East Gold Street Wesleyan Trunk Or Treat Oct. 29

East Gold Street Wesleyan Church will hold their Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 29, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

OCT. 1: Officer Dee said a hit and run driver struck a 2013 Ford operated by Heather Nicole

Dodgen, Chesterfield Court, doing estimated damage of $2,500. Dodgen had stopped for the stop and go signal at the intersection of NC 216 and East Gold Street. The hit and run driver failed to reduce speed and left the scene.

OCT. 2: Officer Dee said Brice Allan Matthews, 203 N. Sims Street, operating a 2017 Jeep on US 74 Business, ran off the roadway and hit two telephone poles with estimated damages of $5,000 and $20,000 damage to his Jeep. Matthews was cited for driving while impaired and failure to report an accident.

OCT. 6: Officer Bullins charged John Walter Young, 1511 Phifer Road, with driving while license revoked for an impaired revocation after a wreck involving his 2008 Ford and a 2013 Dodge operated by Jennifer Marie Cummings, 401 Walnut Street, at US 74 Business at Kings Mountain Boulevard. At Atrium Health Cleveland Young was charged with DWI. Property damage was estimated at $4,000.

OCT. 10; Officer Butler said Celisa Bennett, 114, Raven Drive, operating a 2005 Honda, rear-ended a 2016 Toyota stopped for traffic on US 74 Business and operated by Terry Engle, Bessemer City. Property damage was estimated at $2,200.

Pieces of Kings Mountain History

Family is important. That is a lesson I learned at an early age from my parents. For readers who don’t know, I am the fourth of five children of Orous and Alma Husky. Our parents were strict regarding our behavior towards each other, and with few exceptions, we were held accountable to, and for, each other.

Looking back, I think we got along in life okay because we were so competitive. We still are. I noticed it mostly with my twin brother, because we were in the same grade in school and took many of the same courses. My brothers and I competed in sports, too. We were all good in football, basketball, and baseball, especially when playing in the dirt lot behind Tim Leech’s house.

I find it difficult to understand when my adult friends share that they have siblings with whom they don’t get along. I talk with my sisters several times a day. Sometimes

more. I talk to my brothers, too. But the boys are less chatty.

Last year mom died of complications due to COVID. It was a dark time for our family. Dad passed away 29 years before that, so losing mom was particularly tough. With each other’s support, we kids got through it. I think mom and dad would have been proud of us for watching out for each other.

Mom’s year anniversary came last September. So, my sisters and I decided it was time to get the girls together for some fun and relaxation. And last week Becky and I flew to see Rachel in Indiana.

It had been years since we went to visit her, because she always made the trip to Kings Mountain to spend time with mom. Rachel and her husband Frank have a lovely home with a view overlooking wetlands and the river.

Black squirrels jump from branch to branch and often visit the deck in search of birdseed. Birds fill the trees, and their songs can be heard everywhere. It was wonderful.

We did the normal stuff family does when spending time together, we talk, sit by the fire pit, go out to dinner, eat wonderful meals at home, and shop, shop, shop. We even played pool.

Our dad considered himself a pool shark; he could do trick shots and was quite good. So, he taught us to play. The boys. The girls. We all learned how to play.

One night Frank suggested we play pool… and the game was on! Frank chose Becky as his partner, so Rachel and I paired up. It was a tough game. Methodically, one-by-one, all the balls dropped. We were evenly matched and managed to get down to the final shot, the eight-ball.

The final shot came down to me, and Frank had left me with nothing. Zip. Thanks, Frank! None of the angles were good and I missed the opportunity.

Next, Becky took her turn and cleared the table. I wasn’t upset, she earned it, and that night Becky and Frank were better pool players than Rachel and me.

But what happened next will be passed down in family lore. After the eight-ball dropped, Becky danced around the basement celebrating and we all had a wonderful time. As a condition of the bet, I also had to include the story of “Frank and Becky’s Momentous Victory” in my column.

So, Becky and Frank, this article is for you. You won and I am happy and proud for you both!

After the game was over, Rachel looked at

me, smiled, and said, “Today, I think we all won!” Indeed, Rachel, we did. On that night, mom and dad were also with us laughing and cheering us on. And, knowing dad, he was also dancing with Becky during her victory lap around the room. I can see it in my mind’s eye.

Not only were we doing what our parents wanted for us, but we were also spending time together and making memories. Next time, we

will invite our brothers to join us. I feel sure they will appreciate the opportunity for bragging rights, even if they can’t get a word in edgewise.

Family is important. It is also vital. We children have our mom and dad to thank for teaching us the importance of family in our lives. I can only hope it is a lesson we can enjoy for years to come, because I bought a trophy to engrave with the winner’s names. And it’s a big one!

Looking Back Rising prices – one thing you can do

Reports are pointing to an 8.9 percent raise for Social Security recipients. While it won’t feel like enough, it may buy you a sack of groceries or a tank of gasoline. This is a big ‘maybe’ on the gasoline as California reports prices of over $8 per gallon.

Some of our government leadership is crying because Saudi Arabia is cutting their oil production by 2 million barrels a day. This means less oil for everyone in the grand oil supply pool. I don’t understand why anyone in our government would want to do business with the Saudis.

Buying oil from Saudi Arabia, Venezuela or any foreign entity is crazy. Why don’t we use our own oil? I’m all for green energy but we aren’t quite there yet. Make electric cars and drive them. Utilize solar energy and anything else that we can to help preserve this planet and its resources. Regardless, our country still

needs oil. As long as we need oil, it would be wiser and much more cost-effective to use our own oil. Put Americans back to work drilling our oil and selling it to foreign countries.

Our government has been draining our own oil reserve to try to keep the price of gasoline down. This doesn’t seem to be working very well. Plus, it puts our country at risk. When China and Russia decide to attack us, we need to be able to put fuel in our jets and ships. That would not be a good time to have to go back to Saudi Arabia and beg for oil.

We should utilize a full arsenal of energy from electric cars and a grid to supply the power. Utilize our oil, wind, natural gas and coal. Once our country can do everything without oil or coal, then we can move on from those resources. Being dependent on getting them from foreign nations doesn’t make sense, especially when we have the resources.

A loaf of bread will eventually cost Americans their 8.9 percent Social Security increase. Ukraine has been one of the world’s leading

providers of wheat. Having Russia in control of Ukraine, a major source of the bread supply, along with their major supply of natural gas is bad news for the world.

The Crimea bridge that was recently bombed between Russia and Ukraine should have been bombed on Day One by the Ukrainians. Ukraine must do whatever it takes to thwart Russia’s ongoing destruction of their country. The news has been filled with fear that Russia will go nuclear in their efforts. When the nations start hurling nuclear bombs you won’t need to worry about gas, groceries and cost of living adjustments because this planet can only take so much.

Keep in mind there is still something you can do to make a difference –vote. Clear your calendar for voting. If you don’t vote then don’t complain about our government, inflation, rising interest rates, gasoline prices and more. I know it doesn’t feel like your one vote matters, but it truly counts. The only way you can bring about change is to clear your schedule, take the time, and vote.

Bishop Robert Merriwether Sr. is the Lead Pastor for ARC Enterprises which includes two campuses (Central - Charlotte, West - Kings Mountain, and ARCi - Capetown South Africa). Though the ministry is new to the city, Bishop Merriwether’s wife, Lady Shania Merriwether, was born, raised, and graduated from the local school system. She was Student Body president and served on various sports and recreational activities at KM High school.

The couple decided to plant a church in Kings

Mountain after establishing a strong church in Bishop Merriwether’s hometown of Charlotte, where they are currently under construction of their 7 acre

property. They are currently looking for land and a building to purchase here.

In the meantime, ARC Ministries currently has Bible Study on Wednesday

nights at the Holiday Inn and both campuses worship together at Central on Sundays for now until locating a permanent location.

The group has been busy in the community already and have established several key community partnerships in town with Food Lion, Starbucks, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, Subway, and more. All have graciously assisted in supporting the new church via both monetary and product donations.

Stuck in the snow

(Part 3 of the “WEATHER” series)

Oh how lovely are the white flakes that fall from the sky, and cover the earth during the winter season. As a little girl, I not only enjoyed watching the snow, but sledding down hills, making snowmen, and eating snow cream! However, my cheerful views changed about the cold wintery season when I grew up, started driving, and experienced getting stuck in several inches of

snow. Frustration sets in pretty quickly when you try to drive off, but can’t go anywhere because your wheels are lodged in stubborn blocks of snow. Similarly, you can be driving down the road of life, and suddenly a major difficulty occurs that hinders you from moving forward, and you find yourself not knowing what to do. It could be an unexpected illness, a pain-

ful loss, a challenging relationship, or a traumatic event. No matter what it is, I have good news! You can get unstuck and continue to progress instead of regress in your life! Psalm 40:1-3 (NLT) says, “I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their

trust in the Lord.”

A Couple of Tips to Get Unstuck

“Get others to help you push.” Don’t let fear or pride hinder you from asking for help or receiving support from others. On many occasions, God answers your prayers by sending other people to encourage, serve, pray, give wise counsel, etc. Hebrews 10:24-25, (NLT) says, “And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”

your tires.” The most powerful tools to melt the junk that is holding you captive in your soul (or any other area of your life), are meditating, embracing, and obeying scripture, while you are surrendering to the Holy Spirit. This will help you get the strength you need to break free from every heavy burden or bondage Jeremiah 23:29 (NIV) says, “Is not my word like fire,”declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?”

“Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things. I have much to be thankful for. I like to count my blessings, because it makes me realize that you are good to

me. Even the difficult challenges I face don’t compare to your grace, mercy, and power to bring me out. Father, I will keep praying and believing in your word. You are my Healer, Deliverer and Savior. You are still hearing and answering prayers. Help me Lord - I ask you to deliver me from everything that is trying to keep me from my destiny in you. Lord, I desire to move forward in your love, joy, peace, strength, and perfect will for my life. In Jesus’ name I pray - Amen.”

KMHS Class of 1969 reunion

Kings Mountain Senior High School’s first class to complete all four years at the Phifer Road campus celebrated their 53rd graduation anniversary at Patrick Senior Center on September 17. Theirs was the first class in the history of KMHS to exceed 200 students, with 234 members in the graduating class.

According to class member Mark Hughes, the class had 24 members who served in the armed forces.

One student, Ross Springer attended the U.S. Naval Academy. Michael Grant served in the Army during Vietnam and was killed in action.

The courtyard fountain was the class gift to the high school.

2022 Distinguished Women’s Banquet Nov. 3

The Cleveland County Commission for Women is hosting the 2022 Distinguished Women’s Banquet on November 3, at 6:30 p.m. at LeGrand Center. This is the thirtieth Distinguished Women’s Banquet. Over 100 women have been honored with this prestigious award since its inception in 1992.

Seeds in Season returns October 29

Seeds in Season, a fundraising event by Uptown Shelby, is scheduled for Saturday, October 29, at 5 p.m. The event celebrates local food, farmers, and chefs with you this autumn!

The event returns to the beloved long table format, set under the twinkling lights of the Bobby Bell Pavilion. Enjoy a plated meal that incorporates local ingredients prepared by local chefs for an incredible, one-of-a-kind experience.

The menu includes Passed Bites of Barbecued Carolina Oyster, Sour Corn Hoe Cakes/Candied Jalapeño/Clabber, Crazy Chinese Girl Satays, and Pimento Cheese Nabs followed by a four-course menu.

Course One includes a "Casar" Salad with Little Gem lettuce, roots, roasted squash, cured egg yolk, and black garlic vinaigrette. Course Two includes a Sweet Potato Story with sweet potato dumplings, leaves, and sorghum-sage butter. Course Three is Carolina White Shrimp with sweet chili glaze, mushroom, and winter radish. A(vegetarian option substitutes delicata squash for shrimp. Course Four includes Apple Charlotte with white chocolate and pecans.

1 egg ¾ cup milk Bell pepper, cut fine FILLING.

Combine tomato juice and enough flour to make a paste. Mix with filling ingredients.

TOPPING

Mix cornmeal, egg, milk, and bell pepper. Bake at 350 degrees until brown.

4 chicken breasts

1 can cream of mushroom soup

½ can canned milk

1 box Stove Top dressing

Boil chicken until done, then take off bone and chop. Add soup and milk. Put in casserole dish; add dressing on top after following directions from box. Bake in 350 degrees oven for 30 minutes.

1 tsp. vanilla Mix and bake at 325 degrees about an hour or until brown in a tube pan.

FROZEN ICE CREAM DESSERT

½ gallon vanilla or chocolate ice cream

1 large carton Cool Whip 40 chocolate Oreo cookies

Crush cookie until very fine. Let ice cream soften. Mix all ingredients together, stirring well. Pour into large oblong Pyrex dish. Freeze until hard.

Cleveland County pastor receives Lifetime Achievement Award from President Biden

A Kings Mountain pastor has received a very prestigious award from none other than the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden.

On Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, Dr. Robert W. Eng, III was presented the award at his church, New Life Family Worship Center, which is located at 428 Oak Grove Rd., Kings Mountain, N.C. The award was presented to Dr. Eng by Dr. Kenneth Curry, who has himself in the past been the recipient of this same award. In addition to Dr. Curry, also on stage with Dr. Robert and First Lady Susan Eng, was Dr. Moses Nueman, Bishop to the continent of Africa and President of World Care Ministry International.

As stated on the letter from the White House to Dr. Eng, the award was presented to him “…in recognition of your 6,500 hours of service to this great Nation.” It is further noted in the letter that, by his sharing of his time and passion, Dr. Eng was “…

helping discover and deliver solutions to the challenges we face – solutions that we need now more than ever…Through your service, you are providing all three.”

The letter, signed by President Joe Biden, concludes with the following statement: “On behalf of the American people, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to you for your volunteer leadership, and I encourage you to answer the call to serve. The country is counting on you.”

Dr. Eng, 66, is a 1974 graduate of Kings Mountain High School. He played a number of sports

After graduation he joined the U.S. Army, moving through the ranks and various military training programs, including Ranger School and Special Forces training, becoming a drill sergeant in 1979. Boyce Memorial ARP Church received a second load of pumpkins on October 17, because the pumpkin they had sold like hotcakes. Volunteers from the KMHS Beta Club helped unload the pumpkins. Highway Patrol Officer Howell also stopped by to check out the unloading.

KM volleyball clinches Big South 3A championship

Kings Mountain High’s women’s volleyball team clinched the Big South 3A Conference championship last week with victories over Stuart Cramer and South Point.

While the Lady Mountaineers were winning Thursday against Cramer,

the second place Crest Lady Chargers fell to the Forestview Lady Jaguars and that left Kings Mountain with a two-game lead with just one game remaining. Kings Mountain was scheduled to host the Lady Chargers in the regular season finale Tuesday and

then will await pairings for the state 3A championship. First round action begins on Saturday, October 22 and the Lady Mountaineers will be at home. Other rounds are October 25, October 27, October 29, Western Regional championship November 1 and

State 3A championship November 5.

Lady Mountaineer Coach Heather Pasour continued to get solid play from all of her ladies last week with a 3-0 sweep over South Point Tuesday before the clinching victory over Stuart Cramer.

Against the Lady Red Raiders, KM won 25-9, 25-7, 25-17 with all players turning in outstanding performances.

Camden Pasour dished out 24 assists to go with 11 service points, two kills and two digs.

Myracle Davis was a killer along the nets with 16 kills and a block.

KM blows past the Stuart Cramer Purple Storm, dangerous Green Wave rolls into KMHS Friday

After a slow start, Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers blew past the Stuart Cramer Purple Storm 63-24 Friday night in Cramerton.

The win improved the Mountaineers’ record to 5-0 in the Big South and 8-0 overall heading into their final regular season home game Friday against the Ashbrook Green Wave. Cramer fell to 2-3 in the Big South and 3-5 overall.

The Mountaineers never trailed but the Storm answered KM’s opening touchdown drive to tie the game. Kings Mountain went on to lead 28-17 at the half and then broke it open over the final two quarters.

“That was a good win,” said KM head coach Greg Lloyd. “We played okay but it was not one of our best efforts. We left a lot of points on the field in the first half but we played a lot better in the second half.

“Stuart Cramer had a good game plan,” he added. “They were spreading us out with five wide and they played a 2-3 stack on defense. We adjusted well and played much better in the second half. We were happy to win and stay undefeated.”

With the Mountaineers playing without the services of one of their top running backs, Robert Kendrick, and Caleb Holland playing sparingly with an injury Teddy Jeffries took care of business with 163 yards rushing and five touchdowns. One of their best lineman, Eli Lipscomb, also sat out. “All three should be good to go this week,” Lloyd said.

The Mountaineers had one of their best nights passing as six different receivers chalked up 302 yards on 18 catches from quarterbacks Lamont Littlejohn and TJ Armstrong. Bryson Brown led the way with three catches for 92 yards and Zay Smith had six for 71. Ja’Qualyn Sanders had three for 61, Xzorion Lenair two for 36, Jake Lloyd three for 28 and Jeffries one for 14.

Brown took the opening kickoff eight yards to the KM 35 set up KM’s first TD drive. Two passes from Littlejohn to Zay Smith for 12 yards and Brown for nine put the Mountaineers in Storm territory at the 44. From there it took just four runs from Jeffries – the fourth for 28 yards – to get the scoring underway. Jaden Ellis’s PAT made it 7-0 with just two minutes gone off the clock.

Cramer showed some spunk, though, as Kamari Houze returned the ensuing kickoff to the KM 42. Behind the running and passing of senior quarterback Justin Rocquemore, the Storm knotted the score at 7-all on a 24 yard pass over the middle to Isaiah Johnson and Drew Crotts’ PAT.

It took the Mountaineers just four plays

from scrimmage to go up 14-7 on a 27-yard pass from Littlejohn to Smith, and another Ellis PAT. A 16-yard run by Holland and a 17-yard Jake Lloyd reception set it up.

That score stood for the remainder of the quarter but Cramer was threatening again early in the second quarter when KM was flagged for a 15-yard pass interference call resulting in a first down at the KM 18. A 12-yard sack by Curtis Simpson and AJ Richardson set the Storm back to the 35 but a 21-yard run around end by Rocquemore resulted in a third and six at the KM 14. Richardson recovered a fumble and returned it to the 27 to get the Mountaineers out of the hole.

After an incomplete pass, Littlejohn found Bryson Brown 30 yards behind the Cramer defense and hit him in stride for a 73-yard touchdown and a 21-7 KM lead.

Backed up to their own 18 facing fourth and six, the Mountaineers punted but it was blocked by a heavy rush and Cramer’s Drew Crotts recovered the ball in the end zone for a TD to cut the margin to 21-14 with 4:49 left in the half.

The Mountaineers responded, though, as Lloyd returned the ensuing kickoff 25 yards to the KM 45. A 21-yard run by Holland and a 16-yard reception by Ja’Qualyn Sanders resulted in a first down at the Cramer 17 from which point it took just two carries by Jeffries and the PAT for a 28-14 KM lead.

Cramer’s Drew Crotts booted a 23-yard field goal to make it 28-17 at the break.

KM turned up the pressure on both offense and defense in the second half, scoring on four of five possessions to go up 56-17.

Taking over after holding the Storm to three and out to open the third, KM drove 53 yards in just seven plays to go up 35-17. Jeffries carried five times for 46 yards and scored from the one.

Following a Cramer punt at the 4:08 mark of the third, KM launched a 77-yard, seven play drive culminating with Jeffries’ fourth TD from the six yard line. Along the way Littlejohn threw passes to Smith for five yards, Brown for 10 and Xzorian Lenair for 28 to put KM on the Cramer 33. After a 13-yard run by Smith, Jeffries covered the remaining 20 on two carries to run the score to 42-17 going into the fourth quarter.

Following a Cramer punt, KM took just seven plays to go up 49-17 on Jeffries’ fifth TD, this one from 49 yards out. Sanders’ 23-yard reception was the other big play.

With 7:14 on the clock, KM pooch kicked and Stuart Cramer took over at its 30. On Cramer’s first play, Curtis Simpson intercepted a pass near the KM sidelines and rambled untouched into the end zone. Max

Undefeated Mountaineer JVs calm the Cramer Storm 47-6

Josiah Hill went around right end for a 52-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage to spark the Kings Mountain JVs to a 47-6 victory over Stuart Cramer Thursday night at John Gamble Stadium.

The win improved KM’s perfect record to 7-0 heading into a game Thursday at Gastonia Ashbrook. The JV Mountaineers haven’t lost a game since the first game of the 2020 season. They hope to complete another undefeated season with a win over Ashbrook this week and their final game against Crest at Gamble Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 27.

Coach Diron Bell’s charges scored on all but one of their first half possessions to go into the break up 35-0. The half ended with the Mountaineers on Cramer’s 17 yard line.

After Hill’s initial score, the Mountaineers held the Storm to three and out and their punt went just 27 yards to their own 43. Quarterback TJ Armstrong hooked up with fellow freshman William Vaughn for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead.

The Cramer offense was

able to pick up a first down but then went three-and-out and punted out of bounds at the KM 35. With 4:35 on the clock, the Mountaineers went on a 65 yard scoring drive that featured an 18-yard run by Jamerius Williams around left end, a 13-yard run by Tyler McIntyre for a first down at the 36, and a pass from Armstrong to Barry Moore to the 31. Hill went the distance on a reverse, but the TD was called back for holding. KM found itself on the 28 facing fourth and three and was stopped short of the first down but Cramer went three and out after a big tackle for loss by Izaiah Jones and was forced to punt. KM’s Jayden Watkins fielded it at the KM 35 yard line and rambled 65 yards for a TD. Dom Davis ran a two-point conversion to make it 21-0.

KM’s defense continued strong, forcing a punt. KM took possession at its own 35. It took the Mountaineers just two plays – a 17-yard Armstrong to Moore pass and a 48-yard touchdown on a catch and run by Tyler Furman on a quick-out from Armstrong with 6:34 left

in the half. Vance Johnson added the PAT for a 28-0 lead.

Again, with good defense from the whole team including two big tackles by Mahki Borders and Jamel Lee, the Mountaineers held Cramer to three and out and the Storm had to punt with 4:15 left in the half. KM took possession at its own 14 and needed only five plays to go up 35-0 at the half on a fiveyard yard TD by Vaughn and Johnson’s PAT. Other key plays were two runs by Hill for a total of 25 yards and a 56-yard catch and run by Williams to the five.

A pass interception and 31-yard return by Hill set the Mountaineers up at the Cramer 14 on the visitors’ first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. Armstrong hit Vance Johnson with a TD pass with just 58 seconds gone off the clock to put the Mountaineers up 41-0.

Coach Bell turned the game over to his reserves and Cramer was able to drive 69 yards in 10 plays to score on a six-yard reception by Braxton Sample.

KMMS to host RS in playoffs Grover Elementary appreciates their community partners

Kings Mountain Middle School’s Patriots shutout Burns 8-0 last week and will host RS Central at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the Tri-County Conference playoffs.

The only score came when Nazire Davis connected with

Xavier Hutchens for a 60yard touchdown reception. Hutchens ran a two-point conversion.

The Patriot defense was led by Silas Tate, Camren Houser, Nasir Epps and Isaiah Rote.

KM’s Watson third in Big South 3A golf

South Point wrapped up the Big South Conference championship and Kings Mountain’s Kaliyah Watson qualified for the NCHSAA Western Regional in last week’s final BSC tournament at Lincoln Country Club.

Watson shot a 43 and finished third overall in the conference with a season average of 47 and was named to the All-Big South Conference team. Her season average also qualified her for the Western Regional October 18 at Cedar

Rock Country Club in Lenoir.

South Point’s Ameila Connors shot a 39 to earn medalist honors and was also selected Big South Player of the Year.

Following South Point’s 130 were Crest at 159, Forestview 180 and Ashbrook 187. No other team had enough players to qualify for a team score. Those four teams also finished in the same order for the season as no one else had enough players for team scores.

This past year, community partners have done a great deal for Grover Elementary School. Celanese Corporation has provided all the supplies and constructed a beautiful outdoor classroom for students to enjoy. They also provided a large TV for the front office conference room, hosted a delicious meal for teacher appreciation week, and dropped off a truckload of school supplies. Celanese also recently sent a team to do Zumba with the students and provided treat bags to every student for participating.

The Kings Mountain YMCA began an afterschool care program at Grover with Flooring America providing the flooring materials and the labor to complete the in-

stallation. EATON Corporation provided the paint and workers to refurbish the walls for our students in the afterschool care program. The Washington Outreach Ministry (WOM) continuously provides school supplies and other needed items for students to use throughout the school year.

Over the past couple of years, we have also received support from other local organizations and churches at various times.

The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.

This award recognizes and rewards high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.

WSGE 91.7 FM Fall 2022 fund drive is underway

WSGE 91.7 FM, the award-winning radio station at Gaston College, has begun accepting donations and pledges before the official kick-off of its fall fund drive on Sunday, October 23. The station has a goal of raising $65,000 before the campaign ends on Saturday, November 5.

The theme for the fund drive is “Carolina Musicians—Worldwide Appeal,” which reflects the station’s commitment to featuring the music of native Carolinians like the Avett Brothers, Band of Oz, Marcus King,

CLUES ACROSS

Sheriff’s Deputies respond to shooting near Washington Elementary School

On October 13, at approximately 11 a.m., the panic alarm was triggered at Washington Elementary School due to a staff member in the office hearing what she believed to be three gunshots outside. When she looked outside, she noticed a male running from a residence and vehicles leaving from across the road.

The School Resource Officer immediately acted and made sure there were no imminent threats to the school or students. The school went on lockdown as a precautionary measure. Over 30 deputies from the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, secured the school, and investigated the crime that occurred across

After investigation into the incident, deputies charged Terry Dean Kee Jr. of 230 New Hope Rd., Lawndale with communicating threats, possession of marijuana, open container of alcohol. $10000 secured bond.

Deputies charged Joseph Tyler Floyd of 1858 Stony Point Rd., Shelby

with shooting into an occupied vehicle. $10000 secured bond.

The shooting occurred at Floyd’s home. No one was injured in the incident.

Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office worked closely with Cleveland County Schools to ensure all students and staff were safe during the entire investigation.

I saw a news segment on television a few months ago about home sharing programs for seniors and would like to learn more. I’m 68, divorced, and am interested in renting out a room in my house to help make ends meet. What can you tell me? Interested Boomer

Dear Boomer,

Because of inflation and rising housing costs a growing number of baby boomers are opting to rent out a spare room in their house as a way to generate some extra income, and for some, increase companionship. To find a good fit, older homeowners often turn to “home sharing programs” that will match an empty nester with someone needing affordable housing.

But be aware that home sharing isn’t for everyone. You need to carefully consider the pros and cons of renting out a spare room in your house and make a list of what you want and don’t want in a housemate/renter.

To help you figure all this out, a good resource is SharingHousing.com, a website dedicated to understanding the home sharing concept. They offer various articles, online lessons and resource books that can help you determine if this is a good option for you, and if so, how to find and choose a good housemate.

Home Sharing Tools

If you decide to proceed in finding a housemate/renter, a good first step is to seek out a home sharing program in your area.

Home sharing programs, usually nonprofits, screen both homeowners and renters. They check references, handle background checks and consider lifestyle criteria when making matches. They can also help you with the leasing agreement that the renter would sign that covers detailed issues like smoking, pets, chores, overnight guests, use of common rooms, quiet hours, etc.

Most home sharing programs are free to use or request a small donation. Oth-

ers, however, may charge the homeowner and potential renter a fee for this service. To look for a home sharing program in your area visit the National Shared Housing Resource Center website at NationalSharedHousing.org.

If you don’t find a program that serves your area, you can also search for housemates through an online home sharing service like Silvernest.com. Or, if you’d rather have a younger housemate that can help out with some household chores, consider Nesterly. com. This is an online home sharing agency, available in a few select communities, that matches young renters with older adults looking to supplement their incomes and share their space.

If you don’t have any luck with any of these home sharing sites, put a call in to your Area Aging Agency (call 800677-1116 for contact information) who may be able to offer assistance or refer you to local agencies or nonprofit organizations that offer shared housing help.

You can also check with your local senior or community center, or local church you attend to see if you can post an ad on their bulletin board or in their newsletter. Or you can advertise in your local newspaper or online at sites like CraigsList.org or RoomMates.com.

If you find someone on your own that you’re interested in renting to, ask the prospective renter to fill out a rental application (see RentalLeaseAgreement.org to download and print one for free) and run a tenant screening and background check, and then call their references. Tenant screening/background checks can be done at sites like E-renter.com or MySmartMove.com.
