What do you do when you reach your dead end?

Imagine

Looking forward with the hope of escaping you find yourself approaching a door that is locked and is not possible to open. You have reached your dead end. There is no escape from either sides and everything seems hopeless.

What do you do when you are confronted with a dead end?

Moses recommends some principles as found in Exodus fourteen. He writes the story of the children of Israel being hard pressed by the mighty Egyptian army as they were marching to the promised land. God has told Moses to encamp the children of Israel between two high mountains, in front of the Red Sea, and with all the battle-hardened Egyptians army behind them. They were entrapped awaiting capture or elimination.

As it is common for a human to respond to a dead-end situ-

Similarly, in Monrovia, Liberia, specifically the southern Sinkor community, going towards Atlantic Ocean where very high fences are built to prevent unnecessary intrusions. When an individual is being chased and runs southward, the dead end is going to come right at the ocean. There is no way to evade the chase from any side. When you get to the ocean you have reached the dead end and hopelessness is manifesting itself before you. Look at the horrific and devasting troubles Helena brought to people. Sadly, some were on rooftop awaiting rescue while the water was swelling to the level of the roof. They reached their dead end when they could not go up or down to flee.

ation, the people of Israel told Moses, in verse eleven, it was better for them to die in Egypt and serve the Egyptian as slaves. Secondly, people tend to want to fall back on what has never worked for them before when they are in dead-end state. Moses was told, in verse twelve, that they prefer to remain in Egypt to serve as slaves, the very means of their suppression.

Moses, through the power of God told them three things: 1) Do not be afraid 2) Stand Firm 3) You will see the deliverance from God. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, when you are at your dead end, do not give up. God is right there with you as

He was with the Israelites. He is there as the pillar of fire and the pillar of clouds. The evil people chasing you in that corridor, the people after you at the Atlantic Ocean, the rising water coming to you at the roof are all under the power of God. These troubles or any other troubles you may be facing and hopelessness and confronting, I challenge you to take courage. Do not allow them to deter you from looking at the power of God. Continue to trust God’s love for you and His power to deliver you. You will certainly see the dead end open and you redemption right before your eyes. God is always at your dead end waiting for you.

Mush, Music & Mutts returns to Shelby on October 19

The 2024 Mush, Music & Mutts Festival—North Carolina's Official Fall Liver Mush Festival—returns to Uptown Shelby on Saturday, October 19. This beloved event, situated between Asheville, Charlotte, and Greenville, SC, will celebrate the region's unique culinary heritage, focusing on liver mush, a local delicacy, alongside live music, pet-friendly activities, and much more.

Liver mush, a dish cherished in Western North Carolina, consists of at least 30% pig liver mixed with cornmeal, seasonings, and other pork parts. The ingredients are fully cooked, shaped into blocks, and chilled. This protein-packed meal is traditionally served for breakfast or lunch, and locals love it paired with grits, on a biscuit, or in various other creative ways.

"Whether on a biscuit with jelly or as liver mush hors d'oeuvres, the possibilities are endless," said festival organizers.

This year's festival offers a range of liver mush dishes, including freshly made liver mush sandwiches from local producers like Mack's Liver Mush and Frank Corriher's, both represented by the Shelby Rotary Club. Food trucks and local restaurants will also showcase featured liver mush items on their menus. Shelby, home to Mack's Livermush & Meats and Jenkins Foods, takes pride in its role as a hub for liver mush production. Other producers include Neese's in Greensboro, Hunter's in Marion, and Frank C. Corriher Beef and Sausage in China Grove.

While liver mush remains the festival's centerpiece, attendees can look forward to much more. The event features over 100 vendors selling crafts, food, beverages, and fun activities for the entire family. Pets are welcome, and the festival is free to attend, making it a must-visit for the community.

In addition to the culinary delights, live music will be playing on two stages throughout the day. North Carolina's own Darin & Brooke Aldridge will head the main stage. The husband-and-wife bluegrass duo has gained national recognition with over a decade of success. They have become fan favorites at the Grand Ole Opry, where they've performed more than 50 times. Brooke, a four-time winner of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Female Vocalist of the Year award, and Darin, a former member of the legendary Country Gentlemen, continue to dazzle audiences with their musical talent.

Their latest album, Talk of the Town, released in April 2024, debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Album Chart, staying in the top five for over five weeks. The album has produced three number-one singles as of August 2024, further cementing the Aldridges' place in the bluegrass world. Residents of Cherryville, NC, Darin & Brooke were honored with a mural on their hometown's Main Street in 2023, celebrating their contributions to the state's musical heritage.

Another musical highlight will be Mac Arnold & Plate Full 'O Blues. Mac Arnold, a South Carolina native, has been a significant figure in blues music since his youth when he built his first guitar out of a gas can and wire. His energetic performances and unique style have made him a festival favorite.

The festival also brings the Tray Wellington Band to the stage. Tray Wellington, an award-winning bluegrass musician, is known for his technical prowess and innovative approach to the genre. His distinctive sound has earned him widespread acclaim, making him another can't-miss act at the event.

In addition to food and music, the festival includes petfriendly fun with the "Mutts" portion of the day. RollOver Pets will host a pet costume contest and parade, K9 demonstrations, musical sit contests, and more, ensuring entertainment for pet owners and animal lovers alike.

The Mush, Music & Mutts Festival will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Uptown Shelby, located at 118 South Washington Street. Parking is free, with plenty of spaces available around Uptown Shelby. For those needing handicap-accessible parking, spots are available at HomeTrust Bank (224 E. Warren Street) and Wells Fargo Bank (231 S. Washington Street), both conveniently located near the festival grounds. These handicap spaces are first-come, firstserved and require a placard or license plate.

Visit Cleveland County, a division of Cleveland County Government, organizes the event. Last year's festival drew an estimated 15,000 attendees, and organizers expect an even bigger turnout this year. The combination of live music, delicious food, and family-friendly activities promises a day of fun and entertainment for all.

For more information about the event, including updates and vendor lists, visit the festival website or follow them on social media. Whether you're a liver mush enthusiast or just looking for a fun way to spend the day with family and friends, the Mush, Music & Mutts Festival offers something for everyone.

Gene White and Kings Mountain Gateway Trail

Reprinted by permission from the Carolina Thread Trail

Gene White is a familiar face along the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail, a section of Carolina Thread Trail in Kings Mountain, NC. As we walked the loop, he and his wife take several times a week, he greeted everyone who passed by. He’s noticed an increase not only in trail usage lately but also in the diversity of trail users. His goal is to make everyone feel welcome in hopes that this trend continues.

92-year-old Gene White, the “Walking Champion” of Kings Mountain Gateway Trail, has logged over six thousand miles since 2009.

At 92 years young, Gene finds the 0.7-mile loop segment of the 5-mile trail to be the perfect path to walk with his wife, Dru, and enjoy the beauty and wildlife the trail

offers.

“There was a full-grown doe that just came out right in front of me,” Gene told us as he reflected on one of his favorite trail moments, “And she had two little fawns tripping along behind her; they were probably 5 or 6 days old. You can’t see things like that anywhere else.”

Gene has logged about 6,000 miles since the Gateway Trail opened in 2009, but he was an avid user of that trail long before it got its name. He credits his time on the trail with helping with his health through surgery, chemo, and radiation treatments over the years. These health benefits, along with his interaction with other trail users, are just a few things that motivate him to get out of the house and into nature.

One request Gene made to us at the end of our walk

was to acknowledge the incredible impact that Shirley Brutko, Executive Director of the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail, has made in their community. Not only does Shirley oversee the trail’s maintenance and improvement today, but she also led the planning committee for the trail back in 2001 and saw the plan through to the trail’s opening in 2009. The Thread Trail supported the trail’s creation through grant funding, helping to make it a reality. As the honorary “Walking Champion” of the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail, Gene advises that it is an excellent place to walk year-round and offers plenty of shade and beauty. From wildlife spotting to activities like 5k and 10k races, he is sure you will encounter something special while on the trail.

other sources, SBA can make a low-interest disaster loan for the total loss up to its loan limits, provided the borrower agrees to use insurance proceeds to reduce or repay the loan.

Businesses and private nonprofit organizations of any size may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets. For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage.

As the recovery from Helene begins, FEMA funding concerns surface

On October 2, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas raised concerns about the funding available for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Hurricane Helene relief efforts, highlighting the agency's financial strain. Mayorkas pointed out that FEMA has spent over $1 billion in the past year on services for undocumented immigrants, which has left the agency short on funds to handle the ongoing hurricane season. "We are meeting the immediate needs with the money that we have. We are expecting another hurricane hitting," Mayorkas stated. "FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season."

In addition to the demands of hurricane relief, FEMA and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have been distributing funds through the Shelter and Services Program (SSP), which Congress authorized to support communities providing services to migrants.

In April, $300 million in SSP grants were announced, with $275 million being distributed in the initial round and $25 million allocated later in the year. These funds support temporary shelter and other essential services for migrants awaiting the resolution of their immigration proceedings. Another $340.9 million in competitive SSP grants will be awarded by the end of the fiscal year. Last year, over $780 million was awarded through the SSP and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program – Humanitarian Awards (EFSP-H). These funds supported local organizations and cities, helping them address the growing needs of migrant populations. Organizations like Catholic Charities in border states such as Texas have been recipients of this funding, providing humanitarian assistance as part of their mission.

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program, a FEMA-funded initiative, has increasingly been repurposed to assist migrants. Its budget grew from $30 million in 2019 to

$425 million in 2023. Despite these increases, the demand for SSP funding far exceeds available resources. DHS continues to urge Congress to pass a bipartisan border security agreement that would allocate an additional $1.4 billion for SSP and provide more tools to manage the unprecedented levels of global migration.

To address FEMA's funding concerns, Congress recently provided $20 billion for FEMA's disaster relief fund as part of a short-term government spending bill. This funding will help sustain FEMA operations through mid-December. However, the impact of Hurricane Helene, combined with the uncertain remainder of the 2024 hurricane season, has left FEMA in a precarious financial position.

As the federal government continues to respond to Hurricane Helene's devastation, additional aid is being directed to North Carolina. During an emergency briefing with Governor Roy Cooper, President Joe Biden announced that the federal government would cover 100% of the cost of debris removal and emergency protective measures for six months.

"This will pay for the urgent work you need to clear landslides, to provide shelter, and to provide food and medicine," Biden said.

FEMA, a U.S. Homeland Security Department division, has been actively deploying resources to support life-saving efforts in areas hit by the storm. The agency has sent meals, water, generators, and tarps to impacted areas. Over 1,000 FEMA personnel work alongside state agencies to assess the damage and deliver critical supplies. In total, more than 4,800 federal personnel are contributing to this response. Individuals impacted by the hurricane can apply for FEMA assistance online at disasterassistance.gov, by calling 800-6213362, or by using the FEMA app. FEMA provides several ways to apply for aid, ensuring that even those using relay services can access support.

President Biden approved a federal emergency declaration

for the state on September 26, shortly after the hurricane made landfall to support North Carolina's recovery. This declaration allows FEMA to provide federal disaster assistance, supplementing the state's response efforts. Federal employees impacted by the storm can also apply for emergency leave through their respective agencies.

FEMA's focus on providing life-sustaining assistance has remained strong despite the challenges. Mayorkas emphasized the need for Congress to approve additional funding, stating that without it, FEMA's ability to respond to future disasters remains in jeopardy. The strain on FEMA's budget is compounded by its dual responsibility to provide disaster relief and manage the ongoing migrant crisis, leaving the agency stretched thin as it navigates both demands. The federal government's broader relief strategy includes immediate aid and long-term recovery efforts. FEMA is coordinating with state partners to ensure that areas affected by Hurricane Helene receive the support needed to recover. This aid includes distributing essential supplies and deploying personnel to provide on-the-ground assistance. As the hurricane season continues, FEMA will play a crucial role in ensuring that those affected by natural disasters receive the needed help. President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas have clarified that the federal government is committed to supporting migrant assistance programs and hurricane recovery efforts. However, balancing these priorities requires sustained funding and resources. The success of future recovery efforts will depend on the government's ability to secure the necessary financial support from Congress, particularly as the hurricane season continues.

As FEMA grapples with limited funds, its ability to respond to future hurricanes remains uncertain. The agency's role in managing disaster relief and humanitarian assistance underscores the need for comprehensive funding solutions to address the growing resource demands.

Mountaineers beat Forestview 41-23, big game with South Point Friday at home

Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers rolled to their second straight victory Friday night at Forestview, 4123, but they will face their biggest test of the season Friday at 7:30 p.m. when the hot Red Raiders of South Point come to John Gamble Stadium.

While the Mountaineers were defeating the 1-5 Jaguars last week the Red Raiders were knocking off Greg Lloyd’s Crest Chargers 27-26. The Raiders outscored the Chargers 15-8 in the second half to pull out the victory and create a tie for first place in the BSC with Kings Mountain.

All 15 of those points came in the final quarter with the winning margin coming on a two-point conversion.

The Mountaineers had an easier time at Forestview but they had to come on strong in the final three quarters after the Jaguars took an early 7-0 lead and

tied with the KM eleven at 14-all after the first quarter.

Kings Mountain tied the score at 7-all on a threeyard TD by Josiah Hill. Forestview answered to go up 14-7 with 1:08 left in the first but KM’s Jaden Gash took the ensuing kickoff 98 yards and Matt Rhom kicked the point-after to tie it up again.

The Mountaineers began taking control early in the second period after Lathan Feemster intercepted a pass and returned it to the Forestview six. Josiah Hill took it in from there for a 21-14 lead that would end up being the winning score.

A 65-yard pass reception by Gash ran the score to 27-14 and Forestview got a field goal from Grayson Aycock to cut the margin 27-17 with 1:26 left in the half.

With Hill churning up yardage and the Armstrong to Gash passing attack

would be the last time they entered the end zone.

The Jaguars still had one

a punt to the Forestview 40. Hill covered the distance in four carries, including a 38yard run and a one-yard run for the TD with six minutes

100 yards in kick returns and 50 in punt returns.

cats to three and out to open the game and took advantage of Xavier Hutchens’ long punt return to the visitors’ 35-yard line. Khareem Coleman picked up 29 yards in two carries and a North Gaston face mask penalty gave the Mountaineers a first down at the Wildcats’ six. Cam Houser scored at the 5:12 mark and Refugio Gonzalez kicked the point-after and the rout was on. The Wildcats were able to get a decent drive going but a big quarterback sack by AJ Parker shut it down and the Wildcats had to punt. On KM’s first play from scrimmage, Hutchens circled the right side for a 55-yard touchdown run and Gonzalez added the PAT for a 14-0 margin with 9:32 left in the half.

Another three-and-out by the KM defense, which included a big sack by Cam Houser, left the Wildcats punting from their own 12 and Daeshawn Camp blocked the kick and Cam Houser recovered it in the end zone. Another Gonzalez PAT made it 21-0 with 6:14

left in the half.

A punt return by Hutchens to the North 40, followed by a North penalty put KM on the visitors’ 25. Daeshawn Camp scored from 10 yards out and another Gonzalex PAT made it 28-0 at the half.

The Mountaineers drove the second half kickoff 79 yards in seven plays to go up 34-0 on an eight-yard reception by Hutchens. Along the way Coleman had an 18-yard run for a first down and a 36-yard reception by Coleman to the North 25. After being pushed back to the 38 on a penalty the Mountaineers got a 30-yard reception by Hutchens to the North 8. A holding penalty set them back to the 18 but Smith went around right end for eight yards and Coleman up the middle for two to set up an 8-yard reception by Hutchens to run the score to 34-0.

KM’s final TD came with three minutes remaining on a 44-yard run around left end by Wesley Barnes.

The Trailblazers had a late spark in the 4th quarter driving the ball all the way to Ducks 15 with 3:30 minutes left in the game. Health Academy starts at Gaston’s Lincoln Campus

Students from Lincoln County School High Schools will have a new school-to-career pathway this Fall thanks to a new partnership between Gaston College, Lincoln County Schools, and Atrium Health Lincoln.

The new Lincoln County Schools Health Academy is for high school juniors and seniors and is offered at Gaston’s Lincoln Campus. This program starts Sept. 9 and will provide students with a pathway to becoming licensed practical nurses (LPNs) as early as the summer after they graduate from high school. Students can also continue their education to earn an associate degree in nursing to work as Registered Nurses (RNs) or further advance into a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

“The Health Academy is the first in the state where these juniors and seniors can take foundations of healthcare and nursing classes to become a licensed practical nurse the summer after their high school graduation,” said Gaston College’s Joanne Matz, the dean of Lincoln County Educational Partnerships. “It’s taken a lot

of work, with many people, to get this program off the ground, and we’re excited to welcome the first group of students.”

Atrium Health Lincoln has partnered with Gaston College’s Nursing program to assist the students with clinical opportunities.

“This part of the program allows them to work on their skills in supervised healthcare settings and is a core part of the program,” Matz said. Atrium will also help with job opportunities once the student graduates.

Lincoln County Schools is planning for up to 40 students this first year and will provide transportation to Gaston’s Lincoln campus. In addition, they have partnered with the College and the Rotary Club of Lincolnton for a sponsorship program, allowing students to participate in the Health Academy at no cost. “We are fortunate to have the communities’ support to offer sponsorships for the first year for these students so they will not have to pay for anything. It is an incredible opportunity for these students and our community, and we’re all working together to make it a success,” Matz said.

NCDOT to receive $100M for flood damage from storm

The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced Saturday that $100 million in Emergency Relief funds will be immediately available for the North Carolina Department of Transportation to help pay for immediate emergency work resulting from Hurricane Helene flood damage.

“Working in close coordination with North Carolina, we are providing this initial round of funding so there’s no delay getting roads repaired and reopened and re-establishing critical routes,” said the US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “The Biden-Harris administration will be with North Carolina every step of the way, and today's emergency funding to help get transportation networks back up and running safely will be followed by additional federal resources.”

“It has been devastating to witness scenes of the North Carolina families, neighbors, and communities destroyed by Helene explain what it means to have access to sig-

nificant aid relief slowed or even cut off,” said Acting Federal Highway Administrator Kristin White. “I am proud to say that the FHWA has been working tirelessly, shoulder-to-shoulder, alongside North Carolinians to restore community connections and support emergency response disaster recovery efforts.”

As part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s robust response to Hurricane Helene, USDOT supports response and recovery efforts in impacted communities. Secretary Buttigieg has received regular briefings from USDOT operating administrations and has communicated with Governor Roy Cooper. Additionally, this week he visited FEMA Headquarters to be briefed on the ongoing impacts of Hurricane Helene and the emergency response and recovery actions. He also joined Cabinet colleagues to brief President Joe Biden at the White House.

Hurricane Helene brought heavy rainfall, flooding, winds, and tornados that impacted the state during

September 26-28, 2024. Numerous areas throughout the state experienced significant damage, including flash flooding, landslides, rock falls, road washouts, and bridge collapses. This includes damage to I-40 at several locations.

These ER funds will allow the North Carolina Department of Transportation to act more quickly to fund eligible repairs to their damaged facilities.

FHWA’s Emergency Relief program funds state, territories, tribes, and Federal Land Management Agencies for highways and bridges damaged by natural disasters or catastrophes. These funds, provided through the “quick release” process, are an initial installment toward restoring this essential transportation link. The program will support additional funds needed to repair damage in North Carolina through nationwide funding allocations.

The FHWA Emergency Relief program complements Bipartisan Infrastructure Law programs and provisions by encouraging agencies to identify and implement measures to incorporate resilience in the design, restoration, and repair of damaged infrastructure, to better withstand future damage from climate change and future weather events.
