to Battleground Avenue By Loretta Cozart If you have visited downtown Kings Mountain in the last week, you may have noticed some changes. A lot of activity has been centered around 211 S. Battleground Avenue, where The Sweet Station’s new location is sandwiched between Back Door Antiques and The Wild Cholla, which is soon to open. The owners, Erin Jolly and Susie Wease opened The Sweet Station on Railroad Avenue in April 2023. However, they later discovered an opportunity
to move to Battleground Avenue, and they decided to close their old location to give themselves time for renovations. In an interview with the Herald, Erin shared, “Our intent was to keep the store on Railroad Avenue open year-round. But at that location, we were at maximum capacity indoors. When this opportunity became available, and realizing the potential for the indoor space, we decided to close at that location and to give ourselves time for renovations.” Last week, the owners shared some images on The

An Invitation to Communion with Jesus T h e Bible is filled with gracious invitations extended by God, both in the Old Rev. Robert TestaPatrick, III ment and Pastor the New. D u r i n g Boyce Memorial AARP t h i s month, we have considered just a few of the invitations extended by Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. In these, we have heard Jesus call sinners to turn from misery and destruction to find life and blessing through faith in Him. These aren’t just
invitations, they are commands! Jesus alone can grant forgiveness of sin and righteousness that God will accept on the day of judgment. The last of Jesus’ invitations we will consider is also an imperative command, but it is extended to a particular people. It is only for those who have already come to Him in faith. We hear it in Matthew 26 as Jesus is in a room with His disciples at Passover. As they were eating the Passover meal, “Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’ And He took a cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink of it, all of you, for
this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.” The Passover meal was an annual feast which God commanded His people to keep in remembrance of their miraculous deliverance from slavery in Egypt. Moses, through whom the LORD had given the Passover ordinance, promised in Deuteronomy 18, “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen...” After Jesus’ resurrection, Peter,
preaching in the temple, declared in Acts 3 that Jesus was that prophet to Whom God’s people must listen! The Apostle Paul referred to Jesus in 1 Corinthians 5 as “our Passover Lamb” Who has been sacrificed! All of the Old Testament anticipates the ministry of Jesus Christ. It is in light of all of this that Jesus, on the very night He was betrayed, first instituted the Lord’s Supper as a sacramental meal. He used imperatives as He invited His disciples to, “Take, eat...” and “Drink...of My blood of the covenant...” This would seem remarkably strange if the Old Testament had not included meals and other signs instituted by God
as outward signs and seals of His gracious spiritual blessings. In the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, Jesus bids His followers to partake of elements that represent His body and blood, thereby “feeding” on Him in a spiritual way that nourishes our faith. Luke and Paul both include Jesus’ instruction to “do this in remembrance of Me,” as the Lord’s Supper serves as a memorial of what Jesus has done. But Jesus invites those who belong to Him to do more than remember. When Jesus said He will drink “this fruit of the vine” in His Father’s Kingdom, He is anticipating of another meal. Our call to the Lord’s Supper serves as an invita-
tion to the wedding supper of the Lamb in heaven when all God’s people finally will be glorified with Him! Jesus’ invites us now to feed on Him by faith so that we are given strength for today. But our remembrance of what He has already done for us also gives us bright hope for tomorrow. All who have come to Him in faith are invited to partake of the Lord’s Supper. If you wish to know more of this invitation, don’t hesitate to contact me, or any of the faithful gospel preachers and believers of Kings Mountain. We long to find a table filled with those we know and love who belong to Jesus!

“Small Wonders” Art KM Historical Museum Competition and Exhibit by to feature two black Southern Arts Society Feb. 3 Southern Arts Society’s first exhibit of the year, “Small Wonders,” features artwork with an image size of 6 x 8 inches or less. Artists from around the region have submitted over seventy works of art to be judged for cash prizes. Prizes for first, second, third place, and three merit awards will be presented at their reception on February 3. Artists were challenged to produce works in a smaller format, showing their skill at planning and executing artwork in miniature. Work in the show can be found in various media: oil, acrylic and pastel paintings, mixed media, wood, and collage. While working on a smaller scale is not always easy for the artist, it benefits the buyer who wants to purchase art at a more affordable price. Much of the work on display is priced under $100. This is a great opportunity to start your own art collection or buy gifts for friends and family. The public is invited to meet participating artists at a reception on Saturday, February 3rd from 6 - 8 pm. Awards will be presented at 7 pm. This is a free event, and the dress is casual. Winners will then be posted on the
Southern Arts Society’s website and Facebook page. The exhibit is on view through March 1, 2024. Artwork in the exhibit is available for sale. history exhibits By Loretta Cozart The Kings Mountain Historical Museum has planned two exhibitions highlighting black history nationally and within North Carolina. In 1968, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, led by Drs. Martin Luther King Jr. and Ralph David Abernathy declared poverty a national human rights issue. As a response, the organization planned the Poor People's Campaign, a grassroots, multiracial movement that attracted thousands of people to Washington, D.C. For 43 days between May and June 1968, demonstrators demanded social reforms while living sideby-side on the National Mall in a tent city known as
Resurrection City. This exhibit, called City of Hope, will be at the Kings Mountain Historical Museum at 100 E. Mountain Street from February 20 to June 1. The second exhibition, Oasis Spaces, will run from March 13 to May 11 and will feature what was commonly known as "The Negro Motorist Green Book." Published between 1936 and 1966, this book was both a travel guide and a tool of resistance de-
Telecom company selects Gaston County for North American hub Governor Cooper recently announced that Lynddahl Telecom America Inc. (LTA), a duct solutions company for fiber optics installations, will create 54 new jobs in Gaston County. The company will invest more than $5.6 million over the next three years to establish its first North American plastic extrusion production site in Belmont. “North Carolina is benefiting yet again from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law with Lynddahl Telecom’s decision to make Gaston County its North American home,” said Governor Cooper. “Expanding access to highspeed internet is imperative to closing our digital divide, and having companies in our corner that are well-equipped to extend broadband throughout our rural regions puts us closer to high-quality internet for everyone.” Building on more than 30 years of international experience in the fiber optics and duct industry, the three founders established the parent company in Denmark in 2020. Having seen extensive success in Europe, LTA incorporated in 2023 as a subsidiary of Lynddahl Telecom A/S with the aim of offering duct solutions for
the North American market. The company specializes in product development and customization as a supplier of complete duct solutions for fiber optics for the international telecom industry. LTA will begin operations with a 55,000-square-foot facility to manufacture the protective conduits for fiber-optic cables. “Everyone is increasingly expecting high-speed internet everywhere – be it for remote work, distance learning, or leisure. Over the next decade, historic investments into upgrading broadband access throughout America will be made, representing a major business opportunity for us. We have found a cost-effective method to rapidly deploy fiber optics in Europe and we are excited about being able to offer this to our American, Canadian, and Mexican partners,” said Jacob Ulrik Petersen, President of LTA. “North Carolina continues to rank as a leading state for doing business in America,” said N.C. Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders. “I am proud to see our state compete to win more economic opportunities with innovative companies like Lynddahl Telecom America

Salaries will vary by position; however, the average annual wage is $60,315, exceeding the Gaston County average of $50,746. These new jobs could potentially create an annual payroll impact of more than $3.2 million for the region. A performance-based grant of $100,000 from the One North Carolina Fund will help LTA establish its new production site. The One NC Fund provides financial assistance to local governments to help attract economic investment and create jobs. KM Middle closing in on division championship Kings Mountain Middle School’s boys basketball team opened a two-game lead in the chase for the TriCounty East Division title last week with an impressive 56-28 victory over second place Lincolnton. The win gave the Patriots a 6-0 division record and 8-0 overall mark heading into their last four regular season games. They are almost assured of first place in their division heading into the post-season championship playoffs. The Patriots were scheduled to host North Lincoln Monday.
Veteran KM coach Shane Cole called the first half of the Lincolnton game “one for the ages.” The Patriots came out flat as they turned the ball over on their first two possessions to go down 5-0. After a time out, the Patriots rallied with six straight points. KJ Bell’s first of five three-point goals gave the Pats a 6-5 lead. The quarter ended 8-all. The second quarter was a see-saw battle as neither team could pull away. With the Wildcats up 12-8, Bell continued his hot shooting from deep as he connected
on three more threes to keep the game tied at 19-all at intermission. After halftime the Patriots turned it up on defense and caused seven turnovers, and their offense also got going. Xavier Hutchens hit the first of two and ones in the quarter and Silas Tate made three threes to help build a 36-21 lead in the first 2 ½ minutes and the Patriots never looked back. Christian Jarrett had five rebounds and Hutchens had there assists as KM outscored Lincolnton 23-3 to take a 42-22 lead into the final period.
Hutchens, Bell and Tate combined for 13 points to help seal the deal for the KM five as they outscored Lincolnton 23-3 in the final period. KM falls to Crest, defeats Cramer Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers suffered a tough 79-78 loss to first place Crest but rebounded with a 69-39 win over Stuart Cramer last week. The Mountaineers led the Chargers 36-33 at halftime but a 23-15 run by the Chargers gave them some breathing room before the Mountaineers came back to outscore them 29-23 in the final eight minutes to almost pull off the victory. The Mountaineers placed four players in double figures with sophomore Bradley Floyd leading the way with 24 points. Tucker Robinette and Caleb Nixon added 15 apiece and Kee’don Linney 13. Floyd had nine rebounds and Linney and Nixon had eight each. Crest won the girls game 57-21. The Mountaineers dominated Stuart Cramer from the opening tip, 68-39.
Bradley Floyd had his typical all-around great game with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Caleb Nixon added 14 points and Tucker Robinette 10. Ten different Mountaineers got in on the scoring. The Mountaineers were just as powerful on defense as they held every Cramer player under double digits. Makhi Brown led the Storm with eight points. Bethware Elementary celebrates a century of learning By Jeanette Hardee On Friday, Jan. 26th, Bethware Elementary School used the 100th day of the school year to celebrate its 100-year anniversary! Students and staff dressed up as senior citizens, got special treats, and enjoyed a
program that gave insight into what Bethware was like in the school’s early days. The third and fourth graders also used the event to collect 100 various items to be packaged and donated to the Crisis Assistance Ministry in Kings Mountain.
Lots of students dress as senior citizens to commemorate the day. See photo on page 7B. First Graders dress as seniors to celebrate the school’s 100th anniversary. Photos by Jeanette Hardee

Are You at Risk of Developing Glaucoma? Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about the eye disease glaucoma? My older brother was recently diagnosed with it and lost some of his vision, but never had a clue anything was wrong. Could I be at risk too? Stressed Sibling Dear Stressed, Yes! Having an immediate family member with glaucoma significantly increases your risks of developing it, but there are other risk factors you need to be aware of too. Here’s what you should know. What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss and blindness if it’s not treated. This typically happens because the fluids in the eye don’t drain properly, causing increased pressure in the eyeball. But the scary thing about glaucoma is that with no early warning signs or pain,
most people that have it don’t realize it until their vision begins to deteriorate. While there are two main types of glaucoma, the most common form that typically affects older adults is called open-angle glaucoma. This disease develops very slowly when the eye’s drainage canals become clogged over time, leading to blind spots in the peripheral or side vision. By the time you notice it, the permanent damage is already done. Are You at Risk? It’s estimated that more than 3 million Americans have glaucoma today, but that number is expected to surge to more than 6.3 million by 2050. If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, you’re at increased risk of developing it. • Are you African American, Hispanic/ Latino American or Asian American? • Are you over age 60? • Do you have an immediate family member with glaucoma? • Do you have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, migraines or have
extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness? • Have you had a past eye injury? • Have you used corticosteroids (for example, eye drops, pills, inhalers, and creams) for long periods of time? What to Do Early detection is the key to guarding against glaucoma. So, if you’re age 40 or older and have any of the previously mentioned risk factors, especially if you’re African American, you need to get a comprehensive eye examination every 18 to 24 months. Or, if you notice some loss of peripheral vision, get to the eye doctor right away. If you’re a Medicare beneficiary, annual eye examinations are covered for those at high risk for glaucoma. Or if you don’t have vision coverage, contact EyeCare America, a national public service program that provides free glaucoma eye exams through a pool of more than 4,600 volunteer ophthalmologists. Visit AAO.org/eyecare-america or call 877-
887-6327 to learn more. While there’s currently no cure for glaucoma, most cases can be treated with prescription eye drops, which reduce eye pressure and can prevent further vision loss. It cannot, however, restore vision already lost from glaucoma. If eye drops don’t work, your doctor may recommend oral medication, laser treatments, incisional surgery or a combination of these methods. For more information on glaucoma, visit the National Eye Institute at NEI.nih. gov, and the Glaucoma Research Foundation at Glaucoma.org. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.
