The Project Center, Albemarle Lithium’s new information center, at 129 W. Mountain Street in Kings Mountain is scheduled to open in April. The Herald caught up with Community Affairs Manager at Albemarle Corporation’s Kirsten Martin to get an update on plans for the mine in Kings Mountain and their new space downtown
With the announcement of Albemarle’s recent acquisition of 800 acres in Chester, SC last week, the Herald asked if the newly announced Mega-Flex facility might impact plans for the Kings Mountain mine, lithium concentrator, and job and educational opportunities locally. According to Kirsten, there will be some changes. “Once See ALBEMARLE, Page 5A

Grover teacher brings CPR to the classroom
For the past 3 years Miranda McDaniel, PE teacher and Teacher of the Year at Grover Elementary, set up a heart obstacle course in which the students participate.
The course is set up into the four chambers of the heart. Students learn how blood flows through their heart, to the lungs, into their body, and back to their heart. Students really get their heart pumping with the obstacle course and love it! Mrs. McDaniel talks to the students about how important our heart is and what we can do to make it strong and healthy.
This year she wanted to do more! So, she decided to do hands-only CPR with 4th graders. At first the students were not sure about it but after talking and learning that at least half of the students in each class knew someone close who had suffered from a heart issue they seemed to be on board. Most thought they were too young and wouldn’t be able to do anything, but the students soon learned just how valuable they might be in helping save a life.
With the help of Brown Emergency Training Center, we were able to use training manikins with the students to correctly perform CPR. Students worked in groups to help each other make sure they were correctly placing

Albemarle Lithium announces new US lithium mega-flex processing facility in SC
Albemarle Corporation announced plans to locate its previously announced lithium hydroxide Mega-Flex facility in Chester County, SC on March 22.
Plans for the Mega-Flex facility include an initial investment of at least $1.3 billion to help meet the surging demand for domestic and international electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries. Construction is expected to begin late in 2024.
The term Mega-Flex refers to the facility’s ability to process diverse lithium feedstock, including lithium from recycled batteries. Albemarle expects the facility to annually produce approximately 50,000 metric tons of battery-grade
lithium hydroxide from multiple sources, with the potential to expand up to 100,000 metric tons. Production at the facility would support the manufacturing of an estimated 2.4 million electric vehicles annually.
The site also supports the Inflation Reduction Act, a federal law enacted in 2022 to incentivize the localization of critical minerals in North America.
“This facility will help increase the production of U.S.-based lithium resources to fuel the clean energy revolution while bringing us closer to our customers as the supply chain is built out in North America,” said Albemarle CEO Kent Masters. “This investment supports our
long-term commitment to providing innovative products and solutions that enable a more resilient world. We look forward to partnering with the state of South Carolina on this important project.”
Pending permitting approvals, the facility will be located within a nearly 800-acre parcel. Albemarle estimates the facility will create more than 300 new jobs with an average annual wage of approximately $93,000. In addition, the project would create more than 1,500 construction jobs.
To support the development of the new site, Albemarle is committed to advancing partnerships with the state, local com-

munities, and educational institutions to build a talent pipeline and create advanced technology jobs to support the facility and the community. Additionally, the site will likely create new opportunities for suppliers and other businesses to locate nearby.
“Today’s announcement is positively electric news for the Palmetto State,” said SC Governor Henry McMaster. “Albemarle’s new facility will be transformative for our state, creating thousands of good-paying jobs in South Carolina, and help us further our goals of becoming an electric vehicle hub in the United States by being home to companies like Albemarle who are producing

Gov. Cooper vetoes bill eliminating gun background checks by local sheriffs
On Friday, March 24, Governor Roy Cooper vetoed Senate Bill 41, entitled Guarantee 2nd Amend Freedom and Protections.
In a press release after the veto, Governor Cooper shared, “Eliminating strong background checks will allow more domestic abusers and other dangerous people to own handguns and reduces law enforcement’s ability to stop them from committing violent crimes. Second Amendment supporting, responsible gun owners know this will put families and communities at risk.”

O. Max Garner, III removed from GWU’s board of trustees
The grandson and namesake of Cleveland County attorney and NC Governor O. Max Gardner was ousted by Gardner-Webb University’s Board of Trustees in a statement issued on March 20. Below is the statement as it was released.
“Since early January 2023, O. Max Gardner III has engaged in a malicious, threatening, and defamatory pattern of conduct that has repeatedly and consistently demonstrated that he is unfit to remain on the Board of Trustees or represent the University in any capacity. This conduct includes the following:
• Threatening to shoot a University contractor who was in the process of remedying a complaint that Mr. Gardner himself had made about the condition of the premises leased to a University tenant adjacent to the O. Max Gardner Foundation (as documented in a police report).
• Threatening to shoot that same University tenant (as personally reported by the tenant).
• Directing threats and defamatory statements against President Downs, Kim Downs and several University employees;
• Making baseless threats of litigation against the University and its officers;
• Engaging in a relentless campaign of lies and innuendo designed to unfairly attack, threaten, defame, and undermine the University, President Downs, fellow trustees, and others who work tirelessly to serve students and the University’s Christian Mission; and
• Generally engaging in a course of conduct that undermines the University and its Mission.
It should be noted that, prior to his removal from the Board, O. Max Gardner III was formally directed to cease and desist from his destructive course of conduct. That conduct has continued. He was advised that he was in breach of his fiduciary duties to the University and was encouraged to resign from the Board. He refused to do so. He was given prior notice of today’s Board meeting and provided the opportunity to appear and be heard. The Board also wants to take this opportunity to prepare the University Community for the potential continuation of this malicious vendetta against the University, the President, Board members, and anyone else
who O. Max Gardner III decides to target. Social media channels are outside the control of the University. It is impossible for this Board to gather and refute each and every attack. Likewise, President Downs and other University officials should not be expected to divert their time and energy responding to his false statements and innuendo (past or future). Rather, all faculty and staff should ignore this disgraceful behavior and continue to devote 100% of their time and energy to the University’s students and the advancement of its Mission under the leadership of President Downs.
In closing, we wish to make one thing absolutely clear: The University will continue to celebrate the legacy of former North Carolina Governor O. Max Gardner I (1882-1947) and Faye (Webb) Gardner (18851969). This University continues to take great pride in the fact it is named after these fine individuals who gave so much of their time, talent and treasure on behalf of the University during their lifetimes. This statement was approved unanimously by the Board of trustees.”

have a valid permit from their local sheriff’s office before purchasing or acquiring a handgun. Under SB 41, sheriffs will lose the authority to issue or deny these permits based on criminal background checks and determining the safety and character of applicants.
According to the governor, the legislation removes sheriffs’ authority to refuse a permit based on signs of mental illness, domestic abuse incidents that might not be captured in a national database, or other indicators that a person could be a danger to themselves or others.
The bill also allows guns on some school properties, increasing the chances that children can find or access firearms at a time where gun offenses and suicides among North Carolina children is increasing.
The 2023 North Carolina Child Fatality Task Force reports that gun deaths for children have increased dramatically—231.3% between 2012 and 2021. Guns are now the leading cause of injury death for children in North Carolina, surpassing car accidents.
It is likely Republicans will challenge the Governor Cooper’s veto. After the midterm elections in 2022, Republicans gained more power, failing a supermajority by one vote in the House. The NC Supreme Court also has a 5-2 Republican majority. While Republican’s don’t have a vetoproof majority, they are only one vote away, making attendance by Senators and Representatives crucial for both parties.

Atrium establishes Center for Women’s Cardiovascular Health in Charlotte
Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute has established a Center for Women’s Cardiovascular Health, led by Dr. Esther (Soo Hyun) Kim, a nationally known cardiologist and vascular medicine specialist who is an expert in treating spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD).
The new center is the first in the greater Charlotte region to offer expertise in SCAD and FMD, important causes of heart attack and stroke in women. In addition, Kim and colleagues will care for women with the full range of heart and vascular disease concerns. These include heart attacks and aneurysms, as well as patients at high risk for heart disease due to family history or risk factors affected by lifestyle, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
The center will also formalize the management of pregnant women with heart disease and provide care for those who are identified as high-risk for future heart disease due to risk factors identified during pregnancy, such as a pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes.
“Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute is special in many ways,” said Kim. “It is on the cutting edge of cardiovascular imaging, has nationally recognized expertise in multiple cardiovascular procedures and is recognized as an innovator in the way it delivers heart and vascular care. Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute has all the components necessary to treat a wide range of common cardiovascular diseases, but it is also exceedingly prepared to care for patients with more uncommon cardiovascular diseases, such as SCAD and FMD.”
FMD is a disease of blood vessels caused by abnormal cell development in the walls of arteries, leading to arterial blockages, tears, and aneurysms. It can cause a heart attack, stroke, or high blood pressure. It is different from other heart problems that result from plaque buildup in the arteries. It’s also not due to blood vessel inflammation or blood clots.
SCAD, which is a tear in a
heart vessel, is an uncommon cause of heart attacks overall, but it accounts for about 40% of heart attacks in women under age 50. Women account for 90% of SCAD patients. Many patients with SCAD also have a vascular disorder, including FMD. Kim leads the largest multi-center registry for SCAD patients in the country, which currently enrolls patients from more than 20 sites.
“Most of my SCAD patients are women in their mid40s to 60s who have no other cardiac risk factors,” said Kim. “It’s a rare disease and many patients have never met anyone else with the same diagnosis. It’s very meaningful work to care for them.”
Proper diagnosis of SCAD is crucial, as the treatment of heart attack from SCAD is very different from heart attack due to blockages from cholesterol plaque. While patients who experience a heart attack from cholesterol plaque blockage are best treated with angioplasty and stent, most stable patients who experience a heart attack from SCAD will do best with medical therapy and time to allow their arteries to heal.
Another major focus of the new clinic will be caring for women who have complicated pregnancies with such conditions as hypertension and gestational diabetes that put them at risk of future heart attacks and stroke. The center will benefit from collaboration with Dr. Kelecia Brown, an OB-GYN specializing in high-risk maternal and fetal medicine at Atrium Health Women’s Institute, Dr. Jorge Alegria, a congenital cardiologist at Atrium Health Levine Children’s HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center, Dr. Ashleigh Meiers, an adult cardiologist at Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute with a special interest in the field of cardio-obstetrics and Dr. Michael Shapiro, a nationally recognized preventive cardiologist at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist This team of experts will be able to provide comprehensive cardiovascular care for women across the disease spectrum, from those who may be at risk of heart disease to women with known heart disease from common
LEGION
From Page 1A organization on September 1, 2022 in Milwaukee during The American Legion’s 103rd national convention. He serves one year and spends 330 days on the road visiting Posts in all 50 states and abroad. His theme as national commander is “V.E.T.S., Veterans, Education, Teamwork and Sponsor.”
He spoke to Post 82 members and guests regarding various topics, including the importance of youth programs, needs of active-duty personnel, veteran’s initiatives, and a new mental health program started by American Legion Department of Wisconsin, called Be The One. The program became so popular it has now been embraced by the organization nationally.
Be The One’s goal is to destigmatize asking for mental health support, provide peer-to-peer support and resources, and educate everyone on how they can Be the One.
The No. 1 issue facing the veteran community is suicide, according to the National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report. It is estimated that between 17 and 22 veterans or servicemembers take their lives each day. That’s more than 6,000 annually. The rate of suicide for veterans is more than 50% higher than that of non-veteran adults. As the Global War on Terrorism continues, there will be more
veterans facing mental-health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder.
“The biggest purpose of Be The One,” Troiola said in a subsequent interview, “is to remove the stigma. Those who are at risk don’t want to be labeled because it could result in them losing their firearms, security clearances, or their families. That is why we chose to visit smaller posts, because a veteran talking to a veteran is different than a non-veteran talking to a veteran because non-veterans don’t understand us. There is more camaraderie between veterans, and we can build trusted relationships. The main purpose is to visit veterans and get this information in their hands.”
He went on, “Be The One was chosen as the official charity of Indy Car Racing. It is a big deal, because that is
our demographic. The trailer is staffed by Veterans Service Officers who know how to talk to veterans. And they’ve taught us how to do that, too. We can make Buddy Calls and check up on each other. We aren’t doing this for the credit. That isn’t important. What we are doing is about helping veterans.”
As he concluded his speech, Troiola said, “Being at the national level and wearing this red cap… it’s about getting out there and finding in local communities what’s going on, and advocating for veterans and active-duty military, just like you do at the Post level. It is so important that we get this done.”
He shared a joke that was recently told about him saying, “Jim Troiola isn’t like a National Commander, he’s a blue cap (Legion member) stuffed into a red hat (Na-
tional Commander).” The Legionnaires chuckled with him. “And that’s okay. I am here to help and make a difference. The red cap identifies me as the National Commander, and I am one of you. You can take that to the bank.”
Afterward, National Commander Troiola went around the room, shaking hands and speaking to veterans with the ease of someone who had been a member of the Post his whole life, like he was talking to dear friends. And he was.
For more information about Be The One, visit BeTheOne.org. A 24/7 confidential hotline is available to veterans and their families by calling 988 and then pressing 1, or texting 838255. You do not have to be enrolled in VA benefits or health care to connect.

and rare causes. A multidisciplinary approach will be taken for pregnant patients with known heart disease to develop individual care plans to support safe delivery and continued care for the mother post-delivery.
“Atrium Health has a culture that fosters teamwork and innovation,” said Dr. Suzanna Fox, Atrium Health’s deputy chief physician executive and women’s care service line leader. “Through the personalized and collaborative approach between our providers within women’s care and the Center for Women’s Cardiovascular Health, we can ensure an advanced level of care for mothers-to-be in our communities.”
According to Kim, these patients need to be followed in the “fourth” trimester, after giving birth. Kim adds that Black women have an especially higher incidence of heart problems following complicated pregnancies.
Women nationwide are diagnosed with heart disease and treated at a later stage than men. With the new center’s focus on the needs of female patients, the goal is to eliminate that discrepancy and provide timely care.
“We developed the new Center for Women’s Cardiovascular Health to ensure that women in our region are receiving the best care for cardiovascular disorders, both in terms of prevention and treatment,” said Dr. Geoffrey Rose, president of Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. “We are thrilled that Dr. Kim has joined us, and we are excited about what the new center will mean for our patients.”
Kim recently joined Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute after serving for six years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she was a professor of medicine in cardiovascular medicine. Before that, she spent 11 years at the Cleveland Clinic, where she did fellowships in both cardiology and vascular medicine and was a staff physician in cardiology and vascular medicine. She did her residency in internal medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

She went on to say, “The lab at Kings Mountain must be moved due to its proximity to mining operations. We have not begun mining yet, but before we do, the lab will be moved to Charlotte.”
Currently the lab employs approximately 25 people.

“Margo Plonk will help us focus on how we hire employees locally, reaching out to Cleveland Community College, University City’s Albemarle Technical Park, and the high school. We also plan The Project Center to be a hub for available job opportunities, with a Human Resources person on-site certain days of the week,” Kirsten said.

Resolving Relational Conflicts
Mention
“fighting and feuding” and we think of the “Hatfields and McCoys.” Those two famili es locked horns for almost 30 years (18631891)! What is the cause of squabbles in our relationships?
That’s the very question James asks—“What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you?” (James 4:1).
He pinpoints the root— “Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members?” (James 4:1) . Conflicts arise when we don’t get what we want.
“I want to play with this doll” says one child as she grabs it. But her friend also grabs it and says, “No, that’s my doll, I want to play with it!”
We’ve all experienced similar conflicts, just with different “dolls.” When we don’t get what we desire or someone else gets what
we want – whether recognition or attention, a job promotion or position, a new house or car – lust and envy start kicking!
James says it this way: “You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel” (James 4:2) So what’s the starting point to stop fights and quarrels? We must look into our own hearts. We must admit our sinful attitudes of lust and envy, of pride and competition. Paul advised, “Let us not become boastful, challeng-
ing one another envying one another,” (Galatians 5:26). Then what? We focus on our relationship with God. When things are not right with people, they are not right with God.
James counsels us to take these basic steps:
1) Submit to God (James 4:7) by placing your will under God’s will. Like the Psalmist, we should say, “I delight to do Your will, O my God, your Law is within my heart” (Psalms 40:8). Pastor Charlie Cooper says, “When what you want is not what God
wants, ask God to change your wanter.”
2) Resist the devil (James 4:7) by standing firm against his lies, and “he will flee from you.”
3) Draw near to God (James 4:8) by cleansing your hands of hurtful practices and purifying your heart of prideful motives, and “He will draw near to you.”
Those are God’s promises!
It’s amazing how taking these steps in our relationship with God enables us to resolve our conflicts with people!

Last week, Hayne Neisler contacted the Herald sharing the story of an old photo found in the vault of Margrace Mill in the spring of 1982. “Jim Dickey, manager of Neisco Industries, contacted me. Mr. Dickey explained he was in the process of cleaning out the vault at the Margrace Mill office and had found several items belonging to the late C.E. Neisler, Sr. who built the Margrace Mill in 1919. Mr. Dickey thought I might like to have these items.
Later that afternoon he handed me several musty envelopes containing old photographs. Looking at the photos, I was able to identify all the people except two people in an old photo dated 1913 that had me completely stumped--- a signed photo of a young boy in a military uniform standing beside a man with a beard wearing a majestic and ornate uniform.”
“In those days, before the Internet, it was very difficult to do much investigating trying to identity the subjects in the photograph and I basically put the photo in a drawer and forgot about it. Several years ago, I was finally able to solve the mystery of the two people posing in that 1913 photo,” he continued.
“The item from the Margrace Mill vault is a rare, authentically signed photo of the last ruler of Russia, Czar Nicholas II and his nine-year-old son, Alexei . As I mentioned the photo is dated 1913, a year of great significance in Imperial
Russian history as it was the 300th anniversary, or Tercentenary, of Romanov rule in Russia. All during that year celebrations were held throughout Russia -- the highlight being a six-week cross country train trip the Romanov family undertook taking them all over the vast Russian Empire.”
“Large, joyous crowds greeted the royal family as the Imperial train stopped in cities, towns and later small peasant villages allowing Czar Nicholas II, his wife the Empress Alexandria and their five children to wave to the crowds and bask in their adulation. As part of this celebration special signed photos of Czar Nicholas II and the young heir, Alexei, were sent out to a select few as royal mementoes of the 300th anniversary of Romanov rule.”
Hayne also explained why the photo was so rare saying, “As the empire celebrated this special anniversary, a closely held secret was being kept from the Russian people. The young heir, Alexei, suffered from a rare blood disease which in that day was nearly always fatal---- hemophilia. The blood of the future Czar did not clot, meaning an even minor cut or fall could prove deadly. Alexei, a typical rambunctious young boy, would suffer a simple injury requiring him to spend days in bed suffering at near death from massive internal bleeding. The royal doctors attending to Alexei sadly shook their heads and told his frightened parents, Czar Nicholas II, and the Empress Alexandria, that there was
nothing they could do to help Alexei.”
“In desperation the Czar and his wife turned to a Russian mystic and folk healer named Rasputin who they believed had the power to cure their beloved son and end his suffering. Rasputin was soon able to gain influence over the royal family and became the closest advisor to the Czar. Rasputin begged Czar Nicholas II to not enter World War I, but Nicholas II believed Russian pride was at stake and he chose to fight. The Russian army was severely antiquated and poorly supplied and soon began suffering a series of disastrous defeats on the Eastern front to German and Austria-Hungarian armies. Large chunks of Russian territory were lost as Czar Nicholas troops fled in full retreat,” he explained.
“At the home the Russian public suffered from severe food shortages and angrily began to turn on Nicholas II and his war--ultimately demanding the resignation of Nicholas II. In 1917 Czar Nicholas II realized his situation was hopeless and abdicated the throne. Suddenly after more than 300 years of reign the Romanov dynasty ended in Russia.”
“Soon exile revolutionary leader, Vladimir Lenin, arrived in Russia and overthrew the fragile provisional government that had come to power after the Czar's rule ended. The imperial family was arrested and sent into exile eventually being taken to Ekaterinburg, a remote outpost in Siberia. In July 1918 Bolshevik officials
under the direct order of Lenin murdered the entire Romanov family--- Nicholas II, Alexandria and all five of their children,” he said. How did this rare photo end up in Kings Mountain? While we can’t know for certain, Hayne suggested that in 1913, C.E.,Neisler, Sr. owned the Pauline Mill which he built in 1910 to
weave cotton tablecloths and napkins for the Southern Railway.
It is plausible that the Pauline Mill had been contracted to manufacture special tablecloths and napkins for the Imperial train used in the Romanov's country wide celebration. Perhaps, in appreciation, the signed photo was sent to Mr. C.E. Neisler
all the way in Kings Mountain, North Carolina.
Hayne explains, “What I do know is the photo is considered extremely rare, especially the signature of Alexei as he was only 13 years old when his family was arrested and only a few authentic examples of his signature are known to have survived.,''

Brockman hurls perfect game, strikes out all 15 Huss batters in Big South Conference 3A victory
Kings Mountain High’s
Zane Brockman did something Tuesday night at Lancaster Field that’s never been done before in the 100-plus year history of Mountaineer baseball.
The senior right hander not only pitched a perfect game but every out (15) was a strikeout in the Mountaineers’ 13-0 Big South 3A Conference win over the Hunter Huss Huskies. The game ended in the middle of the fifth inning on the NCHSAA’s 10-run mercy rule.
After Brockman sent the
first three Huskies back to the dugout via the strikeout route, he and the Mountaineers came to bat in the bottom of the first inning to go up 3-0 to get the rout underway.
The Huskie hurlers had a tough time all night getting the ball in the strike zone, beginning when KM’s leadoff batter Caleb Broome was hit by a pitch. He stole second and third and scored what would be the winning run when Jacob Hamrick singled to right. An error and wild pitch accounted for the
other two runs.
Kings Mountain added four runs in the second to go up 7-0. Lucas Saldo got things going with an infield single and Broome followed with a double to put runners on second and third. After a pitching change a walk and wild pitch ran the score to 4-0. Cole Irby singled to left for a 6-0 lead and another run scored on a wild pitch.
The Mountaineers went up 12-0 in the third. Tucker Cash, Saldo and Broome reached on hits and Hamrick homered to make the
score 11-0. Cash’s fly ball to left was dropped and the scoreboard moved to 12-0.
Kings Mountain scored its final run in the fourth. Aiden Taylor led off with a double to left and Turner Brown singled to put runners on first and third. Brockman’s sacrifice fly brought Taylor home with the 13th run. Walks to Wyatt Davis and Colton Mayes re-loaded the sacks but C.J. Whitworth came on to pitch for Huss and got Melton and Toney on fly outs.
Davis hurls three no-hit innings in 24-0 victory
The Hunter Huss Huskies did manage to get three hits in their second meeting with Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers Friday at Huss but they still couldn’t dent the scoreboard as the Mountaineers rolled to a 24-0 Big South 3A Conference victory.
Senior right hander Wyatt Davis pitched three no-hit innings and struck out nine to get the win. Jackson Toney hurled two innings, giving up the three hits and striking out five.
Kings Mountain jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and broke the game wide open with 13 runs in the second frame to go up 18-0. The Mountaineers finished the Huskies off with two in the third and four in the fourth and finished with 19 hits.
Several Mountaineers
had a field day at the plate, including:
-Jacob Hamrick, 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, five runs scored and seven RBI.
-Aidan Taylor, 3-for-3 with five runs scored.
-Brayden Patrick, 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI.
-Zane Brockman, 3-for-3 with three RBI.
-Hunter Ellis, 2-for-4 with three RBI.
-Tucker Cash, 2-for-4 with two RBI.
-Lucas Saldo, 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Mountaineers also had a field day on the base paths with nine stolen bases. Taylor had four, Mayes two and Cash, Hamrick and Ellis one each.
Kings Mountain will host North Gaston Friday at 7 p.m. It will be Retro
Night and will feature 80’s music and 80’s prices at the concession stand. The Mountaineers go to Forestview on April 4 and Shelby April 5 before returning
home April 6 to host Forestview in Little League Night. All Little League teams are invited and kids will run the bases after the game.
KM Defeats Ashbrook
Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers rolled to a 22-0, five-inning victory over the Ashbrook Green Wave in a Big South 3A Conference battle last week in Gastonia.
The Mountaineers collected 19 hits with 10 different players getting at least one. Jacob Hamrick led the way with a perfect 4-for-4 including a home
run and five runs batted in.
Zane Brockman was 3-for-5 with five RBIs and Cole
Irby 3-for-5 with four RBIs.
Aidan Taylor was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Colton Mayes 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Tucker Cash, Nic Cole, Jack Toney, Turner Brown, and Lucas Saldo had a hit apiece.
The Mountaineers got the only two runs they needed
in the top of the first. They began breaking the game open with four runs in the second and followed with six in the third, seven in the fourth and three in the top of the fifth.
Wyatt Davis worked the first four innings, giving up the only hit. He sent 10 Ashbrook batters back to the dugout via the strikeout

route and Colton Mayes came on to pitch the fifth and final inning and struck out the side. The two KM hurlers threw just 77 pitches and did not walk a batter. Thirty seven of Davis’s 61 pitches and nine of Mayes’ 16 were strikes.
Ashbrook used four pitchers with starter Nathan Crawford taking the loss.

GC selects Santin for academic excellence award
Gaston College has selected Estrella Cardona Santin as its recipient of the 2023 Academic Excellence Award. The Gaston College Dean’s Council nominated Estrella due to her leadership skills serving as a peer mentor, her work with undergraduate research, and her overall passion for learning.
Each of the 58 schools in the North Carolina Community College System nominates a student for the award, which recognizes and encourages scholarship and honors students who have “set the highest possible goals and attained the pinnacle of academic success.”
Estrella will graduate in May 2023 with an associate in science degree. She didn’t enroll in Gaston College until a year after she graduated from high school because she did not feel confident that she could succeed in college. When she started attending the College, she began getting excellent grades and compliments from her instructors on the work she was doing. This made her realize that she had unlimited potential and gave her the confidence to allay her self-doubts and fears.
At Gaston College,
Estrella benefited from programs like TRiO, a federally funded program designed to help students meet their educational goals, and the SPARC Scholars Program, a scholarship initiative for students interested in STEM-related studies. “I began to enjoy learning new things in my classes and getting to know a lot of amazing people on campus,” she said. “Now I am almost ready to graduate, and I know this is a huge accomplishment.”
Attending Gaston College is just Estrella’s first step toward achieving her goal of becoming a dental hygienist. If she does decide to attend a four-year university, she will continue to study something in the field of science.
Estrella will be recognized at the Gaston College annual student awards event in spring 2023, and she will be highlighted on the NCCCS website as one of the 58 students who were selected by their community colleges to be honored with the Academic Achievement Award.
CRMC Heart Team performs hospitals
first minimally invasive heart valve repair
Led by Dr. John Schindler, Dr. Pratik Patel and Dr. James Greelish, a surgical team at CaroMont Regional Medical Center performed the hospital’s first transcatheter mitral valve repair on February 21, 2023. Using the MitraClip, the surgeons were able to repair a damaged mitral valve in a patient for whom traditional valve repair surgery was not an option.
Mitral regurgitation is the most common form of heart valve disease. In a healthy heart, blood flows in one direction through the four chambers. When the mitral valve does not close tightly, blood is allowed to flow in the wrong direction from the left ventricle, back into the left atrium. This condition is known as mitral regurgitation. Individuals with this condition experience uncomfortable symptoms such

Enrollment in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) has grown from 14 to 73 in recent years, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) has increased from 47 in 2019 to 96 in 2023.
“The Hunt School of Nursing is no ‘hidden gem’ or ‘best kept secret,’” stated GWU President Dr. William Downs. “To the contrary, our nursing programs have firmly established and sustained broad reputations for excellence. Students, practitioners, and patients across the state and around the region are aware of how GWU combines faculty expertise with the passion and care that can
with our values and history. It’s exciting to see the growth in popularity of our ABSN and DNP degree programs, and we look forward to their continued upward trajectories.”
While direct marketing campaigns have led to the increase, some students, like Scott Pokorney, enrolled in the Hunt School of Nursing after talking to alumni. While working as an EMT in Mecklenburg County, N.C., Pokorney asked the nurses he met
ing program in the region.
Gardner-Webb’s alumni were unanimous in their praise. “They had nothing but great things to say about the program, and highly recommended pursuing my nursing degree at GWU,” Pokorney affirmed. “They specifically mentioned how incredible the professors are.”
Hunt School of Nursing
Director Dr. Tracy Arnold noted that Gardner-Webb’s ABSN program plays a critical role in addressing the current nationwide, nursing shortage because it allows the nursing faculty to prepare entry-level practitioners to enter the workforce in 15 months. “Our Accelerated BSN students are highly qualified individuals, with bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in other fields,” Arnold praised. “Our program attracts students from all over the east coast, with some students commuting up to two hours, one way, which speaks to the reputa-
curriculum. Our Hunt School of Nursing motto, ‘A Bulldog Nurse CARES,’ demonstrates the characteristics both our students and faculty demonstrate. As a bulldog nurse, we are Courageous, we are Advocates, we are Respectful, we are Empathetic, and we are Servant leaders.”
Pokorney entered the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program at Gardner-Webb and now understands the admiration alumni have for the faculty. “They are truly invested in preparing you to become the best new RN possible,” he praised. “They genuinely want you to succeed and nurture you to your full potential.”
The ABSN is one of several degree options at Gardner-Webb. To find out more or to register for one of the many nursing programs at Gardner-Webb visit gard-

If left untreated, the degenerating valve can ultimately result in heart failure.
By using the advanced technology available in CaroMont Regional Medical Center’s Hybrid OR, Dr. Schindler and his team implanted the MitraClip device to repair a damaged mitral valve. Because the hybrid OR combines a traditional operating room and cardiac catheterization lab with advanced imaging systems, the procedure performed is minimally invasive, benefitting individuals who may not be good candidates for traditional mitral valve repair and replacement surgery. If you suffer from mitral regurgitation, ask your doctor if you may be a good candidate for the MitraClip procedure.

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ
By Gar y Miller Gary Miller
There’s a lot of fishing going on right now.
I’ve heard stories from those catching bass, crappie, walleye, stripe, and trout. It is the perfect time of the year for fishermen, no matter what species you’re after. Just like other seasons, this one will pass as quickly as it arrived. While you can catch most types of fish all year long, there are certain times that are just better. Now is one of those times. Soon the walleye will move back into the lake, the crappie will slow down, and the bass will find their lethargic summer pattern. Until then, the fishing will be fast and furious. For some non-fishermen, fast
GARY MILLER
and furious seem like oxymorons to fishing. An onlooker sees a boat anchored to a pile of brush and two fishermen sitting intently, yet motionless, waiting for something to happen on the other end of the rod they’re holding. This looks hardly like fast and furious. Another bystander sees more fishermen slowly trolling along with baited lines following along behind. The last way he would describe this scene would be fast and furious. Someone has said, fishing is a jerk at one end, waiting on a jerk at the other. They are partially right. Fishing is all about waiting, but for some reason, our world equates waiting with inactivity. And some of us are still paying the price for this flawed definition. The truth is, waiting is active. This activity, however, is not physical but mental. It is not passive but aggressive. And

it is both defensive and offensive. A person who waits not only must be alert to their time to move but they must also fight the temptation to move too quickly. This happens all the time in fishing. If you try setting the hook too soon, you miss. If you wait too long, you miss as well. One must wait for the right time. In life the losses are greater than a missed fish. It can be a missed opportunity, or it can be one’s saving grace. Most of the time, we forge ahead when we should have waited, all because we thought waiting was inactivity. The Bible says, “Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act.” God knows all the circumstances surrounding our lives. He has never been in a hurry, and he will never fail to give us clear instructions if we will seek him. But he will do it in his time. Until then, actively wait, looking to him for further instructions. It may be that his intentions are not only to bless you but to keep you from getting in a mess that may take years for you to get out.
Wild Turkey Season Opens in North Carolina on
Wild turkey hunting season opens in North Carolina on April 1. The youth season is April 1 –7, and the statewide season is April 8 – May 6. Hunters are limited to two turkeys for the season, only one of which may be taken during the youth season. Chris Kreh, assistant chief of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s Wildlife Management Division, said that in the 2022 wild turkey season hunters statewide recorded 20,576 birds harvested, including 1,777 birds that were taken during youth season. The total falls short of the past two years’

record-breaking totals, however it remains strong compared to totals prior to 2020.
Kreh confirmed that North Carolina’s wild turkey population remains robust despite the increase in hunting pressure and harvest over the past few years.
“Our agency has safeguards in place to ensure that overharvest does not occur,” Kreh said. “Five weeks of hunting is conservative compared to most states, and hunters must comply with a two-bird limit and may only take male or bearded birds.”
Kreh added that the timing of the state’s harvest season is strategic.
“The season dates offer considerable opportunity for breeding before males are

harvested. Hens are able to nest and raise poults as they always do.”
The youth season is open to anyone under the age of 18, and hunters aged 16 and 17 must have hunting licenses. Youth under 16 are exempt from license requirements provided they are accompanied by a licensed adult who is at least 18 years old. Youth who have licenses or a hunter education card may hunt without adult supervision. All hunters must report their turkey harvest on a Big Game Harvest Report Card.

How to Appeal Medicare Surcharges When Your Income Changes
Dear Savvy Senior,
Is there anything I can do to reduce my high Medicare premium surcharges? Because of my past income, I pay $329.70 per month for my Part B premium and $64.50/month for Part D, but my income has dropped since I retired. Do I have any options?
Overcharged Andy
Dear Andy,
If you’re getting hit with a higher premium for Medicare Part B and Part D and you think it’s unjustified, you can ask Social Security to revisit its decision and perhaps reduce your cost. Here’s what you should know.
Medicare Surcharges
Many retirees don’t realize that monthly premiums for Medicare Part B (coverage for doctor’s services and outpatient care) and Part D (prescription drug coverage) are based on your modified adjusted gross income from two years earlier. So, to determine your 2023 Medicare premium, Social Security uses your 2021 tax return. In those two years, however, your life can change in ways your 2021 tax return and
current Medicare premium don’t reflect. Sometimes, those changes are enough to convince Social Security that your Medicare premium should be reduced.
Part B’s standard monthly premium in 2023 is $164.90 for individuals earning $97,000 or less; it’s $194,000 or less for joint filers. Anyone whose income exceeds those thresholds pays a higher premium, also known as an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA), or surcharge.
The higher monthly premiums rise steadily from $230.80 to $560.50 through five income tiers. The same tiers apply to IRMAAs for Medicare Part D, with enrollees paying an extra $12.20 to $76.40 per month depending on their income.
About 7 percent, or 4.4 million higher-income Medicare beneficiaries pay a surcharge on their monthly Part B and/or Part D premiums.
Reasons for Appealing
In certain situations, Social Security will recalculate your premiums – known as a
redetermination – for Part B and Part D, particularly if the agency based the cost on a tax return that was later amended.
Otherwise, there are seven life-changing events that qualify for a redetermination if they hurt your income: marriage, death of a spouse, divorce or annulment, reduced work hours or retirement, involuntary loss of income-producing property, the loss or reduction of some types of pension income, and an employer settlement payment because the company went bankrupt or reorganized.
How to File a Claim
To ask Social Security for a redetermination, you’ll need to complete Form SSA44 (SSA.gov/forms/ssa-44-ext.pdf) and include supporting documents, such as the death certificate for a spouse or a letter from a former employer stating that you’re now retired. If you filed your federal income tax return for the year that your income was reduced, you will also need to provide a signed copy.
A decision usually takes a few weeks, but if you had one of the events that Social Se-
curity considers life-changing, you should win the appeal. In that case, Social Security will reimburse you for the additional premiums by adding it to your benefit one month. If you are on Medicare but haven’t started collecting Social Security, you should see a credit on a future invoice.
If your request for a redetermination is denied, there are three additional levels of appeals you could try: to the Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals, to the Medicare Appeals Council and finally to the federal district court where you live.
For more information on the premium rules for high-income beneficiaries see SSA.gov/benefits/medicare/medicare-premiums.html.
