Braxlynn Justice got a dozen donuts last Saturday. She and her Maw Maw Debbie Murray were spending the day together.

K Donuts opens in KM

Sinet Yim and her husband, Komar Seng opened K Donuts in Kings Mountain on May 2 at 110 West King Street at the intersection with Battleground Avenue. They make fresh donuts daily, opening the shop at 6:00 a.m., and closing at 3:00 p.m., or until the donuts sell out.

Scenes about town of

Kings Mountain’s business district was busting on Saturday morning as people enjoyed the warm day and an opportunity to get outside to spend time together. On Mountain Street, a couple enjoyed a cup of coffee at Gold Medusa Coffee Co. and Uncommon Artisans.

Up the block at Mountain Holiday, the building is being repaired after suffering storm damage. Building owner Bobby Horn shared that he hopes to have repairs completed within three to four weeks.

unique Mother’s Day gifts, along with locally sourced specialty foods. Shoppers perused the merchandise and chatted with the owners, asking about family and catching up on the news. Across the street, at 131 West groups gathered for lunch on the patio overlooking Mountain Street. Passersby could hear laughter as groups relished their time together. As the weather warms and people celebrate the opportunities to gather after the official end of the COVID pandemic, it is refreshing to see smiling faces and hear the sounds of people celebrating in each other’s company.

New signage on King Street

North Carolina Farm Bureau Agent Andrew Poeng said of the new shop, “K Donuts hits close to home for me. For those that do not know, I grew up in a family-owned donut shop for 17 years in California. This family is from Cambodia and are refugees from the Khmer Rouge just like my parents.”

Car chase and accident kills three Sunday morning

On Sunday, May 14, at approximately 1:07 a.m., Cleveland County E-911 Communications received a 911 call transfer from Cherokee County, SC, Sheriff’s Office. The female caller said that she was a passenger in a car that had been shot at from a suspect truck that was still following them. The caller inadvertently disconnected but called back a few moments later.

The truck was still pursuing them, and reportedly still shooting at them while they were traveling in the Patterson Springs area, on NC 180 South. Deputies from Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office saturated the area, attempting to intervene in this violent encounter.

A deputy found the vehicles traveling on Earl Rd. at US74. While the victims continued, the deputy attempted to stop the suspects at the intersection. The sus-

pects fled by running the red light, and driving on US74 westbound, then turning right onto Dekalb St. At that point, the suspects accelerated and turned off their vehicle exterior lighting. After the deputy momentarily lost sight of the suspect vehicle, he found it had crashed into a home at the intersection of Dekalb Street and Suttle Street.

According to the Shelby Police Department Accident Report, the truck was traveling northbound on N. Dekalb St. exceeding 80 miles an hour. The driver started to lose control of the vehicle in a slight curve before intersection at Suttle St. The truck then traveled off the roadway to the left, crossed Suttle St., striking an embankment. The truck went airborne and landed upside down on the roof of a home at 223 Suttle Street, resulting in a small fire.

Due to the horrific nature of the crash, deputies and Shelby Police Officers worked together to assist See CHASE, Page 5A

Three horizontal bars hang on the pole nearby that read: Real Estate, Construction, and Land. The three bars in the logo represent those three product lines. have devastating impacts on women’s reproductive health care in North Carolina.

The veto message returned with the bill read, “This bill will create dangerous interference with the doctor-patient relationship, leading to harm for pregnant

women and their families. With its medically unnecessary obstacles and restrictions, it will make abortion unavailable to many women, particularly those with lower incomes, those who live in rural areas, and those who already have limited access

to health care.”

The bill is opposed by the North Carolina Medical Society, the North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians. Governor See VETO, Page 5A

money to pay farmers and private industry for their production. Where production fell short, North Carolinians made up the difference by finding creative ways to conserve

everything from potatoes to coal to socks to donate the surplus to the military.

African Americans and white women contributed vigorously to the war effort to express their patrio-

tism and prove to white men they were worthy of greater citizenship rights.

“While nearly 87,000 Tar Heel men and two See PIECES, Page 5A

The United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917, just five months after the first meeting of the Colonel Frederick Hambright DAR Chapter. Its members wasted no time finding ways to support the war effort as evidenced by tidbits of information found in the minutes from 1917. In May there was discussion as to “whether they should serve refreshments at the meeting; the food being so scarce and at such an enormous price, since the World is at War.” The members decided to dispense with refreshments during wartime.

Later that year, the United States enacted The Fuel and Food Control Act that was considered a major success since both the Homefront and Allies received more food. These were the days of “victory gardens,” “wheatless Wednesdays,” “meatless Tuesdays,” and “gasless Sundays,” encouraging

those on the Homefront to support the war effort through personal sacrifice.

Michael Sistrom, Ph.D. of American History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill authored the article, “North Carolinians and the Great War” and examines how World War I shaped the lives of different North Carolinians on the battlefield and on the Homefront. In

it, he notes, “The World War created a boom in agricultural demand and prices, especially for North Carolina’s cotton and tobacco growers. Other Tar Heel farmers helped feed the Allied troops while many of their sons joined the armed services.

“The American military needed massive amounts of food, fuel, armaments, and other material and the

Looking Back

Otis Dennis Green served in WWI was killed overseas on March 1, 1918. He was just 30years old and Cleveland County’s first casualty of WW1, according to accounts from that era. He is also the namesake of American Legion Post 155.

According to an article in the May 28, 1977, Kings Mountain Herald, the family said Green was a member of the first Company 18th Infantry Training Battalion, American Expedition Forces.

Father Thomas Green received a telegram that his son, Otis, was killed in action on the western front somewhere in France on March 1. Green's remains were brought home three years later, after being identified by Dr. O.P. Lewis from Green’s dental records.

In a 1918 Kings Mountain Herald clipping kept by the family it was reported, "about 2,500 people were here Sunday afternoon to attend the military funeral held over the remains

of Otis D. Green, which arrived from France on Saturday morning." That was impressive because Kings Mountain only had a population of 2,800 at that time.

Community leaders intended to hold the memorial service on the campus of the school, but threatening weather forced it inside. Only a third of those in attendance were able to fit into the auditorium, standing room only. Yet those who could not witness the service remained outside in the pouring rain to escort Otis D. Green to his final resting place in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The Herald’s coverage continues, "the procession was an impressive one as throngs followed the soldiers in uniform and lined up on either side of the street to watch them passing. The soldiers were brought to attention and taps were sounded by Paul Peterson. The flag was taken from the casket and given to the father, Thomas A. Green."

Love cares enough to try…

Honesty is not always the easiest path but it’s usually the most loving path. Let’s say you have a loved one or friend who is diabetic but they eat crazy stuff every day from pizza to cookies to soda pop without regard for personal health. Is it best for you to treat them to treats containing white flour and sugar every chance you can or to have a talk with them? Of course, you run the risk of hurting feelings or making the person angry but chances are they are going to die sooner than they should. It’s best to try to save the person’s life by being honest. You don’t have to cut the person’s head off with a verbal assault or face slapping rhetoric. Love doesn’t attack people. You shouldn’t get “preachy” because this runs most people away. Simply preface your remarks by saying, “I’m your friend. I care about you and your life. I want you to live a long time. However, if you don’t stop eating what you eat all the time you are probably going to shorten your life.” This could pertain to any negative activity or addiction.

Having serious con-

versations with people is not easy. We are all busy. We aren’t close enough to most people to be this direct. Plus, we really must care a lot about someone to be lovingly honest. We run the risk of the friendship becoming strained or evenly totally severed. The bottom line is do you care enough to be honest? Plus, don’t ever start making life recommendations to someone unless you truly love the person and are willing to help the individual work through the issues.

It’s easier to let people continue on their negative path to self-destruction. Fast food and unhealthy food items are unfortunately much more affordable. It’s not cheap to eat healthy. It’s not cheap to be sick either. Medical bills can pile up quickly. Trips to the doctor are expensive. Diabetic medications are expensive. Kidney issues result in death for many Americans every year. Funerals are expensive. Giving up a good friend or family member is life changing.

Disease happens to us all in some way. These bodies are very vulnerable to cancer, diabetes and so on.

Chances are you may have tried. Most likely you have talked your head off to someone you love but they continue in their negative behavior. It seems many people under 50 can’t fathom

sickness or death. The consequences of their behavior seem remote or even impossible. Thus, they continue on their way.

Of course, we all have to look in the mirror. We all wrestle with our private and public demons. Most of us know we aren’t perfect and if we take a serious inventory of our lives and habits we realize we all come away short of perfection, this is especially true of me. I have lots of personal work to do and it’s all I can do to try to do my own daily diagnosis and repair work. This is why we don’t take the time to try to help others; we have enough problems of our own.

Therefore, this is why you have to really care a lot about someone to take the time to try to help the person.

If you had the gift of premonition and could keep someone from being killed in an accident you wouldn’t hesitate to speak with them about it. So, why, if you can help someone address personal issues/ addictions that might be deadly, wouldn’t you try?

Unfortunately, addictions and mental illnesses are issues that people seem to be afraid to address. If someone you love was inside a burning building, most of us would risk our own lives to rush in and save them.

Why is it so hard to risk hurt feelings to save a life?

Reader named VP of corporate social responsibility at Albemarle Corporation

On Monday, May 15, Albemarle Corporation announced that sustainability and social impact leader Carrie Reeder has joined the company as vice president of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the Albemarle Foundation as executive director.

In this newly combined role, Reeder will lead the company’s efforts to build strength and resilience in the communities where Albemarle operates. In the Foundation portion of her position, Reeder succeeds Sandra Holub, who has served as executive director since the Foundation’s inception in 2007. Holub will remain with the Foundation supporting strategic partnerships.

“Carrie has embraced an active role in helping Albemarle make a positive and sustainable impact in the communities where we live and work,” said Sean O’Hollaren, Albemarle’s chief external affairs officer. “As responsible corporate and nonprofit citizens, we are committed to creating a more resilient

Further investigation revealed that the shooting incident began in Cherokee County, South Carolina, where the victims’ vehicle was struck by gunfire. The suspect vehicle relentlessly pursued the victims for several miles into Shelby. During that time, the caller reported the suspects continued to fire at the victim vehicle. Given this persistence by the suspects, it appears they were determined to kill the occupants of the other vehicle. It was only through the intervention of the deputy that the suspects disengaged from menacing the victims.

Fortunately, none of the occupants in the victims’ ve-

world in which both people and the planet thrive. That has been Carrie’s heartfelt commitment throughout her career. It was also Sandra’s vision when she helped establish the Foundation, and we are very grateful for her work.”

Reeder has over 15 years of experience developing CSR and stakeholder engagement strategies that have driven measurable results across the U.S., including Puerto Rico, and in the U.K., France, India, and China.

Cleveland County Sheriff’s investigators responded to the incident and continue to investigate what crimes took place in our jurisdiction. Cherokee County Sheriff’s investigators are conducting their own investigation of the incident in their county.

Sheriff Alan Norman said, “Given the relentlessness with which these suspects pursued and shot at the victims, it is a miracle that no one in the victims’ car was injured. I am proud of the joint effort between all the involved agencies to work through this investigation.”

Three men died in the crash, Fabian Cosby, 20, Kenandre Kirkland, 20, and Elijah Priester, 18. The other three men were taken to the hospital. The investigation is ongoing.

VETO

From Page 1A Cooper was joined on stage by doctors and women as he vetoed the bill.

“Let’s be clear - this bill has nothing to do with making women safer, and everything to do with banning abortion,” said Governor Cooper at the rally. “How about we leave medicine to the doctors and the decisions to the women.”

This week, Governor Cooper traveled across the state and heard from physicians, patients and advocates who shared stories about how Senate Bill 20 would be devastating for North Carolinians. At

In 1917, the City of Kings Mountain was a small, tight knit community with a population of 2,800, having grown by 582 in less than a decade. By August, the Colpnel Frederick Hambright Chapter officially “decided to become the Auxiliary of the Kings Mountain Red Cross.” They agreed to “knit sweater sets, donate 2 jars of jelly per member as reserve hospital supply, (assemble) comfort bags for boys leaving from Kings Mountain, and send (newspaper) clippings to the comfort committee for sailors.” The officers elected for this work were: Mrs. McLean,

events from Wilmington to Gibsonville, physicians have highlighted how this legislation would dramatically reduce access to reproductive freedom and threaten their ability to provide care for their patients.

Despite Republican attempts to disguise this abortion ban as “mainstream,” Senate Bill 20 would dramatically reduce access to abortion and could cause women’s health clinics across the state to shut down. In addition to imposing a general ban on abortions after twelve weeks, this bill would: Ban medication abortions after 10 weeks; medication abortions account

chairman; Mrs. W.S. Dilling, secretary; Mrs. R.L. Mauney, treasurer; and Ms. Bonnie Mauney in charge of clippings”.

Hayne Neisler shared a story he found on Kings Mountain’s efforts funding bonds from the January 18,1919 Cleveland Star, “The sale of Victory Loan Bonds at Kings Mountain was very gratifying, so the result shows and so Mayor W.H. McGinnis writes to us. The Honorable W.A. Mauney sold the largest amount of bonds, his sales being $61,500 at the First National Bank of Kings Mountain . The Peoples Loan and Trust of Kings Mountain sold $43,100 making the grand total in Kings Mountain of $107,200. The Honorable W.A. Mauney will therefore be awarded one the captured German helmets and the town of Kings Mountain will get the honor of receiving an American flag flown by our troops at the Somme Offensive in September 1919.’’ One can only wonder where the flag and helmet are today.

In September, the DAR chapter reported on

Governor continues commitment in building age-friendly state

On May 2, Governor Roy Cooper issued Executive Order No. 280 directing action to continue the state’s commitment to building an age-friendly state. The Executive Order brings a whole-of-government approach to support North Carolina’s aging population.

“Our rapidly growing and diverse older adult population strengthens our state and communities,” Governor Cooper said. “We’re going to continue our work to make North Carolina the best place in the country to grow older.”

The Order directs the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) along with expert working groups to develop a Multisector Plan for Aging. The Order also directs NCDHHS and the North Carolina Department of Commerce to convene a Caregiving Workforce Strategic Leadership group to develop and implement recommendations to bolster the caregiving workforce. It also directs NCDHHS to develop recommendations

for approximately 60 percent of all abortions in North Carolina:

• Require three in-person appointments days apart for anyone seeking a medical abortion, which doctors have called “medically unjustified and unnecessary,” and make care harder to access for anyone who can’t take off work, afford to travel, stay in a hotel or get extra child care

• Significantly increase the number of burdensome attestations for patients to complete prior to receiving reproductive health care

• Implement new regulations and licensing requirements that don’t contribute to patient safety and could cause the closure of clinics

their Red Cross work: “30 jars of jelly were collected, 2 knitted sweaters, mufflers, helmets, and wristlets were made, clippings were collected, and 350 Liberty Bonds were purchased”. In October, Bonnie Mauney and Daisy Carpenter were asked to “make a list of all of the Kings Mountain boys who had left for the Training Camps and put the list in the Red Cross work room.” Like others across the state, members of the Col. Frederick Hambright Chapter did their part to support the war effort in creative ways.

The names of three Kings Mountain men killed during World War I are listed at Veteran’s Memorial in Patriot’s Park. I’m sure many more served America from our community. We can only hope that the efforts by our citizens through the Red Cross and other organizations gave those serving from Kings Mountain comfort while they were so far from home. Let us honor:

William Barrett – Army, Killed in Action

Robert Pressley Falls –Killed in Action

Ben Ross - Killed in Action

We are grateful for all those who served, and especially for the sacrifices made by these three men and their families. It is obvious from the DAR minutes that our citizens realized the danger faced by those serving in the military and made efforts to give them comfort, both physically and mentally, and to support their families while they were away.

to improve adult protective services.

The Order also directs the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources to improve access to outdoor spaces, the North Carolina Department of Transportation to improve transportation options and the North Carolina Department of Information Technology to improve access to broadband and digital literacy.

“I am so grateful for Governor Cooper’s leadership in signing this executive order to make North Carolina a place where all people can thrive throughout life’s seasons,” said Mary Penny Kelley, Executive Director of Hometown Strong. “By joining the Livable Communities network, North Carolina joins a consortium of other states working to advance policies to help a growing demographic. It’s an honor to be a part of the incredible dedicated team that worked to make this possible.”

providing abortions across the state North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore responded with the following statement:

“Governor Cooper has spent the past week, including Mother’s Day weekend, spreading misinformation about SB 20 in an effort to frighten voters and appease campaign donors.”

He continued, “The truth is, the Care for Women, Children, and Families Act will save unborn lives, protect women, and support families. His veto will be swiftly overridden.”

To help with the war effort during World War I, DAR loaned its National Headquarters land to the United States. The federal government used the land to erect a temporary war office building that provided office space for 600 people. Many DAR members became American Red Cross volunteers and provided substantial financial support to the relief organization and the DAR Headquarters became a center of wartime activity. Almost every room that could be spared in the DAR buildings, were given to the American Red Cross for such efforts as the Prisoner of War Office, a day nursery for the children of enlisted men whose wives were working, and a War Service Center to entertain servicemen. Constitution Hall also hosted Red Cross War Relief concerts. DAR chapters and individual members also did their part. DAR member contributions supported the important Red Cross Blood Plasma Fund and helped to buy ambulances, trucks, and mobile canteens. Additionally, some 112,000 DAR members volunteered over 26 million hours for the Red Cross. How nice it is to know that our DAR Members from Kings Mountain were a part of that effort.

During this month set aside to honor our veterans, let us honor both the living and the dead. Their service to our nation, and to us, changed the course of history. And the efforts of those at home made a all the difference in our nation’s winning the war.

Take the job

(Part 3 of

“The Invitation” Series)

I had the opportunity to be a nursery director at a church that had about 150 children ages 0-4 years old in two Sunday services. They had gone through several directors in just a couple of months. Also, they had trouble recruiting and keeping volunteers. I was a parent volunteer with them, but I didn’t like the climate of the nursery and was thinking about moving to another department. However, someone told me that there was a position open to be the director and that I should apply for it. In my mind I was like no way I don’t want to deal with all of that, but God had a different plan. Proverbs 3:5-6

(NLT) “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

A few days later, I read one of Joyce Meyers’ books, and she stated that just because something is difficult doesn’t mean God doesn’t want you to do it. In fact, he may be leading you to it. As I reflected on what she said, in my head, I heard, “Take the job!” The Lord reminded me that he is al-

ways inviting his children to walk in faith and obedience. He promises to be with us and to empower us! Deuteronomy 31:8 (NLT) “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Yes Lord!

I applied for the job, and they hired me to be the nursery director. It was one of the best experiences that I have ever had in a leadership position. We went from 23 volunteers to 70, and we went from one leader to a team of 5 leaders. Our nursery team prayed together, supported each other and fellowshipped outside of church. God blessed us and those little children who needed us, because I yielded to his will instead of my own. What is God asking you to do? Will you say yes? You never know whose life will be positively impacted because you said YES to the Lord.

PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father, I exalt your holy name. Your praise will continually be in my mouth. You have invited me to walk in faith, but sometimes I am afraid. Please forgive me for missed opportunities to do your will when it required a huge leap of faith. I didn’t do it, because of fear. I realize now that I was disobedient, and I ask you to forgive me. Lord, strengthen me and help me to trust you even when everything around me is screaming it’s going to be too difficult. I ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit until I am overflowing with your Presence. May I walk in great faith and obedience in order to please you. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”

“Natural Beauties” Exhibit at Southern Arts Society

Currently on exhibit at SASi is “Natural Beauties”, an exhibit and sale of finely crafted objects made primarily from natural materials. Artists working in clay, fiber, glass, gourds, metal, and wood have created both functional and decorative items that are for sale. While some art forms remain traditional, many artists have given these natural materials a decidedly updated and original twist. There is something special and unique about every object as it relates to something made from the earth.

Sixteen artists are participating in this year’s show: Janet Baxter, Marygrace Bianco, Hilde Deprez, Joan Fogle, Liani Foster, Sue Helmken, Timmy Hord, Joe Doug Knotts, Marie D. Lafitte, Tammy Lafitte, Barry Lockman, Bertie McClain, Betty McConnell,

Sarah Monteleone, Rebecca Newsome, Alex Pietersen.

The public is invited to attend a reception for Natural Beauties on Saturday May 13 from 6 until 8 pm. This is a free event and dress is casual. Many of the artists will be on hand to meet and discuss their artwork. Natural Beauties will be on view in the Reavis Gallery at Southern Arts Society now through June 9. Also, on view in the Founders Gallery, is artwork by the late A.B. Mauney Snow. Miss Snow helped to

Co. Arts Council’s 2023 Garden and Outdoor Living Tour

Like a painter, a gardener experiments with colors. Should a plant with bright orange blossoms go behind a dark purple bush?

Like a sculptor, a gardener will look for plants with interesting shapes. Like a photographer, a gardener considers the changing light during the day.

Join Cleveland County Arts Council (CCAC) on Saturday, June 3, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., as our selfguided tour of six lovely outdoor living spaces returns and see the outside “artistry” that has been created.

Tickets ($20) may be purchased from the Arts Council, 111 S. Washington St., Shelby, Mon. – Fri. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and on our website www.ccartscouncil.org. You can also purchase them at individual homes the day of the event (cash/ check only).

Also, that day Paradise Garden Center, a sponsor of the event, invites you to stop in to see their selection of indoor, outdoor, annual, and perennial plants, many grown on site. While there, enjoy a slice of wood fired pizza in their outdoor kitchen from 11 a.m. –2 p.m. Paradise Garden Center is located at 460 Cherryville Rd Shelby, 704-480-1012 and is open 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The locations on the tour include:

• Carole and Jack Arey

2160 Twin Chimney Rd. Shelby 28152

Twin Chimneys Farm is the home of Carole and Jack Arey. Carole grew up at the farm spending summers with her two brothers, Linton and Vance and her parents, Sara and JL Suttle. The Suttle family’s history with Twin Chimneys Farm dates back to 1854. Jack and Carole have owned the property since 2000. They have two children Bill (wife Jennifer) and Millie Arey Wood (husband Michael) and one granddaughter, Sara Mac Wood. Millie

and Michael were married at the farm in 1994. All of the landscaping including shrubbery, flowers and trees were planted and cared for by Sara Suttle. She was passionate about her yard! She even laid the brick walks with a little help! Twin Chimneys Farm has always been a special place for family and friends to gather. The Areys want to welcome you and hope you enjoy your visit.

Our Garden style is a blend of Country Traditional (vegetables/ blooms), Cottage (herbaceous perennials) and Mountain Retreat (Conifers/Japanese maples). We purchased our 1920's craftsman style home less than four years ago and with the exception of some stately old oaks, the landscape was all grass. In a short time, we have worked to create a maturity beyond its actual age. The conifer garden features unique and scarce specimens enhancing the artful value of color and texture. Following the style of my country grandparents where I spent much time on their SC, low country farm, blooms are everywhere. Every season. Our yard and gardens are inspired by a naturalist approach, with the hopes of not looking too

When we realized that our home was for sale we came and walked the lot. I fell in love with all of God’s nature. That was 42 years ago, and I have not stopped digging, planting, taking care of plants, shrubs, and most of all finding comfort doing all these things. Ninety percent of my yard is considered full shade so most everything I have that blooms starts in early spring. I have learned to enjoy the summer and fall with textures. A prime feature of our yard is the shared rock garden beside our house. When our neighbors had an issue with water drainage, we worked together to find a creative solution – the rock garden is shared between both homes. A good day for me is a day in the yard (even in the rain).

• Debbie and Brent Ferrell

220 Belvedere, Shelby 28150

In 1984, our family moved from Washington, DC to a 60-year-old house in Shelby (now almost 100). This two-story house was in disrepair both inside and out and the yard was a forest of scruffy pine trees. Brent’s vision

for the house and yard included doing most of the work himself. The metamorphosis of our yard over the last 39 years has been in conjunction with an addition to the house requiring a new driveway, adding a detached garage and then a connecting walkway to the existing original garage. After losing four very large trees in our backyard wooded area last summer, we refurbished (with encouragement from landscape architect, Fred Blackley) a small barn-like structure hidden in the woods. With new structural support and a new tin roof, this little barn is the focal point of the new garden path that leads to it. Our yard is no longer the ballfield and play yard that it once was but, has become a lush green tranquil oasis of Japanese maples, fescue grass and pachysandra beds. Please enjoy walking through the entire yard and you are welcome to peek into the gym in the upstairs of the detached garage.

Six years ago, we remodeled a 1901 old farmhouse. There was not even a hint of lawn at this broken-down farm, but tons of old junk. We soon discovered our 100-year-old oaks made it difficult to grow grass and as a result we started our gardening adventure! We specialize in conifers and perennials with pops of color from the annuals. Pebble paths lead to a cozy water feature and fire pit under the shade of the old oak trees. Mountaineers beat Cramer 7-2, Carson 2-1 in state 3A playoffs

Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers were scheduled to face West Henderson last night in the third round of the state 3A baseball playoffs.

West Henderson, 21-4 and regarded as one of the top 3A teams in the state, has taken care of Atkins 16-1 and North Lincoln 8-0 so far.

The Mountaineers opened the playoffs last week with home victories over Stuart Cramer 7-2 and Jesse Carson, 2-1.

Cramer jumped out front 1-0 in the top of the third inning, but KM’s Cole Irby hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the inning and that was all the Moun-

taineers needed to get the playoffs off to a great start.

Zane Brockman went the distance for the Mountaineers, giving up just three hits and fanning eight.

Cramer’s only run was unearned. He also led the Mountaineers at the plate with four hits, including a RBI double.

Hunter Reavis started for the visitors and took the loss after giving up the home run. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings. Nate Brittain, who had no-hit the Mountaineers in a regular season game, came on and the Mountaineers chased him in a two-run sixth inning.

The Mountaineers scored single runs in the

first and sixth innings to edge a very good Carson team Friday night. The Mountaineers were scheduled to face West Henderson in a third round game last night.

Aidan Taylor drove in runs in the first and sixth innings. He was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Irby went 2-for-3 and Brockman and Mayes each had a hit.

Wyatt Davis held the visitors to just one hit and struck out 13 batters over the first six innings.

The KM-West Henderson winner will face the winner of the last night’s East Rowan-North Davidson game in the state semi-finals.

Kings Mountain native and former Mountaineer golfer has played 30 rounds over 10 tournaments with 28.3 of those 30 rounds counting toward the team tally.

Goff has recorded a teamhigh 22 rounds of par or better, including a team-best 19 under par, and has three second place finishes in his last six tournaments including an 8-under par 202 at the Southeastern Conference championship last month.

The Lady Mountaineers ended their season with a 13-8 overall record while Southern Guilford advanced to the second round

with a 17-5 mark. Maddie Huffman led the Lady Mountaineers at the plate with 3-for-4 and two runs batted in. She also did a good job on the mound, giving up just four hits and fanning seven but seven KM errors helped Southern

Guilford. Desiree Green went 2-for-4, including a double, and Paige Fleming had s single. Coach Kevin Cruise’s Lady Mountaineers will return most of their starters next season.

Qualifying for the KM ladies were Ashlee Brooks, London Brown, Alyssa Deal, Sarah Eagle, Kieanna Ellis, Divinity Ervin, Kallie Hope, Janiya Hunt, Kamari Odems, Nicole Poston, Kinley Putnam, and Brooke Waseman.

Max Thompson finished third in the 800 meter run with a personal record 2:02.24.

The women’s 4x100 meter relay team of Brooke Waseman, London Brown, Alyssa Deal and Janiya Hunt finished eighth with a personal record of 52.77.

Yetis Finish Seasons Strong

Both the baseball and softball teams traveled to compete in their respective Region 10 Division II tournaments. Baseball was hosted at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City, NC and softball was hosted by Louisburg College in Louisburg, NC.

The Region 10 softball tournament started the previous week with the top 8 teams in the region competing in head-to-head 3-game series. Winners of the series then moved on to compete in a doubleelimination format tournament. The Yetis softball team qualified for the double-elimination tournament with a doubleheader win at Pitt Community College.

The highlight of the tournament weekend was a 9-0 win versus Bryant and Stratton. Brooke Dover would pitch a complete game shutout in the win. Brianna Frye homered, and Kadence Hopper hit two home runs. The Yetis

would fall in an elimination game to Catawba Valley 3-1. Softball finished the season with a 3rd place finish in the Region.

The Region 10 baseball tournament was highlighted by two 9th-inning walk-off wins for the Yetis. In their 5-3 victory over Wake Tech, Joshua Morgan hit a 3-run homerun to win the game. In the following game against Patrick & Henry, Caleb Adair hit an RBI single to tie the game. The win was capped when Kael Snethen hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th to score Alex Adams tagging up from third (12-11 final). The Yetis would bow out of the tournament with a 5-4 loss to Lenoir Community College in an elimination game. Baseball finished the season with an overall 33-17 record.

Lloyd to coach at Starmount KMHS College Decision Day

Greg Lloyd, who recently resigned as the winningest football coach in Kings Mountain High’s 100-year history, Monday became the new head coach at Starmount High School in Booonville, NC.

Lloyd served as the Mountaineers’ head man for the past 16 seasons and is the winningest football coach in school history.

He has an overall record of 149-80 which includes two years as the head coach at

East Gaston. The Mountaineers compiled a 13-1 record in Lloyd’s final season last fall, losing only to the eventual state champion East Lincoln Mustangs.

Starmount, which is located near Winston-Salem, is coming off a 7-4 season in the Northwest 1A Conference. The Rams’ only conference loss last year was to Mount Airy which went on to win the state championship.

Kings Mountain High School College Decision Day was held on May 1. Seniors were encouraged to wear shirts or hoodies to represent their college of choice. With graduation scheduled for June 3, seniors are entering the home stretch of their high school careers, and the day allowed them to wear the colors of their future colleges.

CCC holds largest graduation in its history

Cleveland Community College held its 2023 commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 11. The College had 619 graduates this year and awarded 894 credentials, making this the largest graduating class in the College’s history.

Among the graduates were 41 students from Cleveland Early College High School earning 53 credentials, and 146 Career and College Promise students earning 155 credentials.

The ceremony was held in the James B. Petty Amphitheater, named for the College’s first president. During his opening remarks, President Dr. Jason Hurst told graduates, “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in your life.”

He continued by stating that some graduates in the audience may be the first in their families to graduate from college, while others may have returned to college after spending years in the workforce. “Whatever your story, I commend you for taking the initiative to pursue your education and better yourself.”

During the ceremony, Dr. Hurst recognized the graduates who maintained a 4.0 GPA, reading their names and asking them to stand and be recognized. He also announced the 2023 Academic Excellence Award Winner, Michael Parnell, and presented him with a plaque and medallion to commemorate his accomplishment.

Parnell is a deputy fire marshal in Caldwell County. He is graduating with a 4.0 GPA and his Associate in Applied Science in Fire Protection Technology.

North

The guest speaker for the night was North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell.

Elected to his first term as State Treasurer in 2016, Folwell was reelected in 2020 and is serving his second term. His message to the graduates was to work hard and keep moving forward. He challenged the graduates to “focus on integrity, ability and passion” and to be the ones to raise their hands when the world asks for volunteers to do the toughest jobs. He also told the group to be sure and thank those who have supported and encouraged them through their edu-

State Highway Patrol graduates 36 new troopers

On Friday, May 5, NC State Highway Patrol proudly welcomed 36 new troopers at a graduation ceremony held for the 158th Basic Highway Patrol School. The ceremony celebrates 14 weeks of extensive training to prepare the graduates for a worthwhile career in law enforcement.

The ceremony was held on the grounds of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Training Academy in Raleigh. Department of Public Safety Secretary Eddie M. Buffaloe, Jr. served as guest speaker and provided congratulatory remarks to the graduates.

The oath of office was administered by Judge Fred Gore of the North Carolina Court of Appeals. Lieutenant Colo-

nel Daryl Conley, deputy commander of the State Highway Patrol, provided remarks to the newest sworn members of the State Highway Patrol.

Space Grant awarded to CCC student

John Pasour, a mechanical drafting student at Cleveland Community College, was awarded a $4,500 North Carolina Space Grant earlier this year. He presented his research findings at the NC Space Grant Symposium in Raleigh on April 21.

Pasour’s goal with his research was to “determine the viability of using living components in an air filtration system.” The system would be used in space to remove carbon dioxide from an atmosphere to make it breathable or to at least take a load off the existing electrolysis systems so that they can work more efficiently.

With the help of machining instructor Brian Summey, Pasour designed, drew and assembled a container for his air filtration system. Once the components of the experiment were set up, Pasour made observations over the course of several weeks. At the conclusion of the experiment, he created

a poster to display his findings. Unfortunately, the results were not promising, but Pasour enjoyed the experience anyway.

Pasour is graduating in May with an Associate in Applied Science in Mechanical Drafting Technology. “My dream job would be to play around in a room with 3D printers all day,” said Pasour, “or go to a fouryear and become an aerospace engineer. Either way, it seems like a great career path to go down.” About the North Carolina Space Grant The NC Space Grant is a NASA-funded program that seeks to engage students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics
