Everyone is invited to come and pray for our schools. It is our hope that each of our eight (8) schools will be represented by administrators, teachers, assistants, and other school employees along with parents and students from our various schools.Itis also our plan to have our pastors and churches to partner with the schools in Kings Mountain during this upcoming school year and to pray daily for our schools and to offer whatever help we can provide. The project is running late, as this section was to be completed by the end of July. Nonetheless, merchants are pleased for the progress and hopes are high it will be finished quicker than expected.Merchant Iris Hubbard is holding a contest that ran through the end of July asking her patrons to guess when W. Mountain Street will reopen. Winner gets a free lunch for six. If multiple guests choose the same date, a drawing will be held between them. Other merchants have kept their chins up during this time, struggling with rents and loss of revenue. On Tuesday, August 11, city council discussed a low or no-interest loan for merchants who struggled during this period. Details will be shared as soon as they are known.

She was born on May 10, 1924 in Raeford, NC to the late Nora Belle and David AlexanderEvelynSmith.lived a wonderful life of adventure and love for her many friends and family. She never met a stranger and was ever so passionate about living a full life. She was known at one of her two churches that she loved dearly, as the Rummikub Queen, a favorite pastime. One family lost their house and everything in it but lost their family – four children, ages less than two up through eight, were swept away by the raging flood. One woman who had also lost her house and everything in the house stated she and her family were alive and that’s all thatNonemattered.ofus want to lose our houses and everything we’ve worked for most of our lives. However, it’s all junk in comparison to our children and loved ones. From the fires of California to the floods of eastern Kentucky to the devastation of Ukraine by Russia, loss and devastation can come to us all. We don’t want loss. We recoil from natural disasters, invaders or diminishingIthealth.takesa lifetime to pay for a house. Today, cars are often financed five years and more. People work hard to accumulate a few things. Little children, spouses and aging parents are not easy to come by. Most of the time we take everything we have for granted. When the floods of life literally wash away all that we have and love, the loss is horrific.Wereally don’t know the full extent of how painful loss is until we have lost it all. Recent flood victims in eastern Kentucky essentially lost it all. Many literally escaped with only the shirts on theirCancerbacks.can eat away at our lives. Other forms of diminishing health can take us down to nothing. Financial losses can make us miserable. A fire can destroy everything. Life can change and in a moment.Sometimes we have warnings that life is on the way to changing. When it rains, we don’t automatically think the water will become so deep that we will all drown. Some people in eastern Kentucky will never be able to enjoy a long night of rain because of what it mayOverall,bring. people would like to live out their lives quietly and safely. Avoiding floods, fires, and other life-threatening crises, having food to eat, something to wear, and the enjoyment of people we love, are most meaningful to us.In the middle of life’s devastations, we often look to God and ask why? If He really is so great, so good, and so loving then why would He send or allow eight or nine inches of rain to fall on the ‘hollers’ of eastern Kentucky and sweep away little children? Did He go to sleep? Does He not care? Is He detached from what happens in the world? Is He really out there? Yet, as many grieve, they will fall upon God as He is all they have left to get them through. An old saint of God who suffered through the storms of life once said, “I didn’t realize God was all I needed until God was all I had.” Whatever or whoever you have today, don’t take it or them for granted. Be grateful, give thanks. Love on your loved ones and be kind to all. Consider taking some of your stuff and giving it to someone who may have nothing. It will be good for you both.

Forty-two years ago, downtown Kings Mountain was going through revitalization. In July 1980, city crews were repaving East Gold Street and constructing new sidewalks on BattlegroundEastAvenue.Gold Street was widened from Battleground Avenue to York Road. That same year, the city put turning lanes on Cherokee Street and Battleground Avenue, added planters in the sidewalks, and added lighting. That same year, Fred Kiser took a closer look at the old B&B Restaurant. The theme set by the Revitalization Committee was “Kings Mountain Comes Alive,” and promotions were planned around that theme.

Speak this aloud, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Even the Psalmist needed encouragement and essentially reminded himself to hope in God. May we put our hope and trust in God so that we can offer this song of thanks to the Lord, “Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures here below. Praise Him above Ye Heavenly host. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.” Today, I hope this devotion resonates with you. I hope you will be encouraged when you recall what God has done for you. Much more significant than this cheerful song, the Bible gives me reasons to celebrate and praise the Lord. Psalm 59:16 calls us to praise, “But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and refuge in the day of my distress.” The Psalms are incredibly important to me and to all believers because they meet us where we are in life. The Psalms do not sugarcoat life’s problems yet give us reason to praise God even amid trials and distress. EASY COBBLER Vickie Hamrick 1 cup milk 1 cup flour 1 can either cherry, peach, or apple pie filling 1 stick butter 1 cup sugar Mix milk, flour and sugar. Melt butter and put in bottom of cobbler pan. Pour mixture of milk on top of melted butter. Do not stir. Spoon out filing in pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes. Keep checking until golden brown.
Southern Arts Society in Kings Mountain features local artist Jeffrey J. Bowers with a one-person show “Jeffrey J Bowers - the plein air collection”. All the paintings shown in this exhibit are painted “en plein air” or “in the open air” on location. Bowers considers himself an artist in the Modern Impressionist style. Working in acrylics, he paints landscapes, cityscapes, still life, pets, buildings, and vehicles in and around the Piedmont area of western North Carolina. There are 36 paintings in this exhibit, with the majority featuring landscapes and city scenes in Gastonia, where Bowers lives. The public is invited to meet Mr. Bowers at a public reception Saturday August 13th from 6-8 pm. The show is on view now through September 17, 2022. To keep his artistic skills sharp, Bowers paints outdoors, “in the open air” as often as possible. His dedication was rewarded recently when the 12th Annual PleinAir Salon Art Competition announced its monthly winners for their April Competition. The PleinAir Salon is a national online art competition hosted by PleinAir Magazine. Bowers was awarded the best Plein Air winner in the Acrylic Category for April with his painting titled, “Late Summer Afternoon”. This puts Bowers in the running, along with other monthly winners for the grand prize, to be announced in May 2023.Even when working on location, most of Bowers’ paintings are completed in less than two hours. Smaller canvases, and water based acrylic paint call for fast paced brushwork. Bowers uses his commercial art training to accurately draw the foundation of the painting, then using as few brushstrokes and details as possible, he quickly captures the feeling and atmosphere of the scene. An accomplished artist, Bowers takes great satisfaction in mixing colors on his palette to match what nature presents in front of him. And while painting in the “impressionist” style concentrates on light and color over detail, locations and objects are easily recognizable to the viewer. “Jeffrey J Bowers - the plein air collection” is on view in the galleries of Southern Arts Society through September 17, and online at www.SouthernArtsSociety.org. Salaries for the new positions will vary, but altogether, the average annual salary for the positions is $46,510, which is above the average salaries in Cleveland and Cumberland counties. The project could create a potential annual payroll impact of more than $12.8 million per NVR’syear. expansion will be facilitated, in part, by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee earlier today. Over the course of the 12-year term of the grant, the project is estimated to grow the state’s economy by more than $516 million. Using a formula that takes into account the new tax revenues generated by the 261 new jobs, the JDIG agreement authorizes the potential reimbursement to the company of up to $1,635,000 spread over 12 years. Payments for all JDIGs only occur following performance verification by the departments of Commerce and Revenue that the company has met its incremental job creation and investment targets. By Loretta Cozart In an email to downtown business and property owners on Monday, August 8, City of Kings Mountain shared why Streetscape is moving more slowly than planned.Assistant City Manager Nick Hendricks shared, “As you have seen, the sidewalks are being poured and the area is beginning to look like a streetscape. Though it has been challenging for all involved, when it is finished it will be something I know we all can be proud of.” He continued saying, “I also wanted to explain the reason that we are not moving just yet to the next section, and it is the end of the first week of August. Several things have delayed the timeline, however most all of these were either needed additions or discovered issues that required additional designHendrickswork.” outlined the reason for delays sharing, “The most recent work on N. Cherokee Street, involved my decision to bring AT&T and Spectrum in and remove several unsightly utility poles and a mass of overhead communication wiring.”“The city electric division has worked over the last couple of weeks installing new poles near the rear entrance to the Police Department and behind the old Wells Fargo building. This was done to reroute electric lines and communication lines from above the Bullock building and to install the electric services to the Police Department, Dellinger’s, Mountain Holiday, and Ervin Clinic underground from new utility pole locations.”“Once AT&T and Spectrum reroute their lines by next Friday, the two old poles that were in the sidewalk along N. Cherokee Street will be permanently removed. The opening of the 100th season of Kings Mountain High School football is right around the corner and fans have a chance to see what’s to come when the Mountaineers host the annual Cleveland County Jamboree Friday night at John Gamble Stadium.Allfour county teams will be facing good competition. Crest takes on Newton-Conover at 6 p.m., followed by Burns and Cox Mill at 7, Shelby and Reagan at 8 and the Mountaineers and Monroe at Kings9. Mountain’s game may be the best as the Mountaineers and Monroe have been involved in barn-burners every time they’ve met. In their last outing at Monroe the Mountaineers won but in their last meeting here in the 2020 “spring” season Monroe knocked them out of the playoffs to end their perfect 8-0 regular “Monroeseason.isgoing to be very good,” says Mountaineer coach Greg Lloyd. “They have a three-year starter at quarterback. He was their starter as a sophomore when they beat us in the first round of the playoffs in the COVID spring season. He is a dual threat.“They have a ton of speed,” he added. “They are a top tier team that’s going to be a very good team for us to play.“And the first three games (Shelby, Asheville and Burns) will be really good, too,” he added. “All of our county teams are going to be real good competition. We’re going to have to play at a very high level.” Lloyd said his main goal going into the jamboree is to see how much his team has improved during early practice.“We have a lot of players back,” he noted, “but we will be working on getting new guys in and seeing what they can do. Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office held their first National Night Out event on August 2, in Uptown Shelby, from 6 p.m. -8:30 p.m. National Night Out is an event that provides a great opportunity to bring Law Enforcement Officers and the community together under positive circumstances. This year, 34 deputies participated in the event which represented seven different divisions of the Sheriff’s Office. CCSO shared 17 dozen doughnuts, coffee, and fellowship with the community, while giving away 50 insulated tumblers, 150 Logo cups & coasters, 300 key chains, and 50 Sheriff’s Office T-shirts to kids at the event. The atmosphere was festive, and a wonderful time was had by all. An estimated 400 people attended during the two-and-a-half-hour event, and the sheriff’s office looks forward to holding this event in the years to come. Sheriff Norman said “It goes to show that Cleveland County has a strong base of support for our law enforcement officers. We can always count on our citizens to support our efforts to help us locate missing persons or identify persons of interest in crimes, which makes the community a safer place to live. Last night was a national event but we, at the Sheriff’s Office engage our citizens throughout the year with other events around the county.”

By Deputy Health Director DeShay Oliver The Cleveland County Health Department is reporting the first case of monkeypox virus infection in a Cleveland County resident, confirmed by testing at the State Laboratory of Public Health. Monkeypox is a rare, but potentially serious, viral illness that typically involves flu-like symptoms, swelling of the lymph nodes and a rash that includes bumps that are initially filled with fluid before scabbing over. Illness could be confused with a sexually transmitted infection like syphilis or herpes, or with varicella zoster virus (chickenpox). Most infections last two to four weeks. The Cleveland County Health Department is working closely with NCDHHS and the patient to identify and notify individuals who may have been in contact with the patient while infectious. Monkeypox is typically spread by skin-to-skin contact. The person is currently isolating at home. No further information will be shared about this case to protect the patient’s privacy. Since May 2022, 3,308 monkeypox cases have been identified outside of endemic regions worldwide, with 6,617 cases identified in the United States and 72 cases in North Carolina. Confirmed case of Monkeypox in Cleveland County
The gunshot victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The victim is Jose Antonia Jimenez Quinones, 51, from Gastonia. Due to the circumstances surrounding this on-going investigation, no other information can be released at this point. Gastonia Police officers located a suspect fleeing the area on foot. The suspect was taken into custody without incident. After consulting with the Gaston County District Attorney’s Office, the suspect, who is a juvenile, has been arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder. The suspect is currently in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Due to their age, the suspect’s information is not being released. Lowell Police Department is leading the investigation and the Gaston County Police are assisting. Numerous agencies assisted in the initial response including Gastonia Police, Gaston County Sheriff’s Office, Ranlo Police, Cramerton Police, Gaston Emergency Medical Services, Lowell Fire Department, and Ranlo Fire Department.
