A mother-daughter defining moment

Susie Graham has worked in Cleveland County Schools for 33 years, but this year may be her most memorable. This year will also be special for her daughter, Cailyn Van Buren, who just moved from teaching fifth grade to becoming assistant principal at Bethware Elementary School.

As the staff returned to work this month, Susie posted on her Facebook page, “I attended my yearly beginning of school administrative meeting today— something I’ve done for many years. While I can’t recall everything about the earlier years, this is one I will never forget because today, I was blessed to attend with my daughter as

Pieces of Kings Mountain History

Hayne

Neisler is a wealth of knowledge about early Kings Mountain history. This week, he shared the bizarre story of George E. Coolidge and his wife, Emma, and their two sons. The family moved to Kings Mountain six years after the city was incorporated in 1874. In 1884 the New York Times newspaper carried a sensational story concerning Mr. George Coolidge and his wife, Emma. The Coolidge’s had moved to Kings Mountain in 1880 when George was hired to be superintendent of the Kings Mountain Gold mine near Lake Montonia Road.

The Coolidge’s became well known in Kings Mountain and moved into a home on present-day Gaston Street. In 1884, after twelve years of marriage, the couple became estranged with George accusing his wife Emma of infidelity.

Mr. Coolidge took custody of the couple’s sons, Alfred, and William, and remained in Kings Mountain. Following this estrangement, Mrs. Emma Coolidge placed the following ad in a Spartanburg, S.C. newspaper.

‘’I offer a $2,000 reward for the delivery of my two children, Willie B. Coolidge, and Alfred G. Coolidge, three and nine years of age. The two children, one dark-eyed and the other blue-eyed, are now living with their father, George E. Coolidge. I will pay one thousand dollars for one, or two thousand dollars for two to any party who can deliver my children. I will deposit funds and pay all expenses. My address is Kings Mountain, N.C.

“Six men from Spartanburg, S.C. acted on her ad. Arriving by train from Spartanburg and disguised in raincoats they debarked at the depot and headed by foot to the George Coolidge’s residence on Gaston Street. Local residents were suspicious of the strange men and notified the police. All six were arrested outside the Coolidge home. In court in Shelby, they were charged with attempted kidnapping and were placed under $ 1000 bond each. All six men were later convicted and served prison terms of five years each.

What happened to the Coolidge’s? Three months after this kidnapping attempt George Coolidge moved with his two young sons to Philadelphia. Emma Coolidge, however, had not given up her

hope of gaining custody of her sons. The March 13, 1885, Philadelphia Inquirer ran the following story.

‘’Mrs. Emma Coolidge was arrested today on the charge of attempting to kidnap her ten-yearold son, Alfred, and with conspiring with two others to accomplish her purpose. The woman and her husband, George E. Coolidge, a gold miner from the South, lived together until a few months ago in Kings Mountain, N.C. She is the daughter of General Robert Deshu who fought with General Zachary Taylor in Mexico. In December 1884 Mrs. Coolidge brought an action for the possession of her two sons. The Court declined to grant her appeal, but her husband last month permitted her to gain custody of the threeyear-old boy William after she paid Mr. Coolidge $1,000.

“Previously the mother, in her efforts to get possession of both boys, hired a band of armed men in December of 1884 to go to Mr. Coolidge’s house at Kings Mountain and kidnap the children. Their design was discovered and Mr. Coolidge, with a posse of local men, went and captured all six conspirators. All have been sent to prison. Three months ago, Mr.

Looking Back

came to Philadelphia and his wife followed him and renewed her efforts to regain custody of the other son. Mr. Coolidge, as a precautionary measure, had police domiciled in his house and today an attempt at abduction was attempted. An old woman called at the house and made an ineffective attempt to obtain admission. The police followed her some distance and found Mrs. Coolidge in a carriage. They arrested Mrs. Coolidge, and she is being held on $1,500 bail until a hearing next week.”

Another article about the Coolidge family comes from an 1895 Carbondale, Pa. newspaper.

“The domestic troubles of the Coolidge family have assumed a startling aspect by the arrest of the eldest son, Alfred Coolidge, on the charge of using threats of murder to extort money from his mother. The social prominence (drew) much interest when on Tuesday last Mrs. Coolidge caused the arrest of Mr. Coolidge on the charge of non-support for her and her fourteenyear-old son, William. She now charges that her

other son, Alfred, who is arrayed on his father’s side, followed her to her home and demanded $25. When she refused, he drew a revolver and pointed it at her with the threat to shoot if she did not comply. William persuaded his brother to then leave the house. Alfred was arrested and is being held on a $1,000 bond.”

Very little can be found about the Coolidge family. Alfred Getze Coolidge died at 42 on November 12, 1916, and is buried in The Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA.

Maui… terrible devastation can happen anywhere

Maui has long been the go-to destination for millions to experience paradise. Unfortunately, life has changed.

With school starting back last week, I wanted to share a photo posted by Cathy Beam on the Kings Mountain History Facebook page. This week’s photo is of Kings Mountain High School Class of 1925. The photo was taken at Kings Mountain High School on Ridge Street. The columns show that it wasn’t the current structure but the previous building that burned in the 1930s. The students look so young, and their fashion and hairstyles are far different from the current day. This photo was taken 98 years ago. Unfortunately, we don’t have the names of the

Maui is now the site of the deadliest fire in modern U.S. history. At this writing, over 90 persons are been reported dead, and the number is climbing as more bodies are found. The lovely town of Lahaina is nothing but charred remains and embers.

The news reports of people fleeing for their lives via any means of escape possible is horrific. People who were trying to escape in automobiles have been found unrecognizable except through eventual DNA testing. The entire island is now a humanitarian crisis. Medical supplies, food, and shelter are at crisis levels.

Like you, I’ve watched it from my television. Maui is a tragic global news story that no one wants to hear. Maui’s story reminds us that

devastation can happen anywhere. It was a hurricane that swept away Ft. Myers Beach last year. A tornado and flood destroyed parts of Kentucky. Or, it may be the fires that have destroyed so much in California. Maui reminds us that no paradise is untouchable.

You might feel safe and isolated in Appalachia. You may feel very comfortable in some remote western terrain. You may live in a comfortable suburb or city surrounded by all types of Emergency Responders; you may be living in a tropical paradise. But…there are no guarantees that your community is insulated from disaster.

When a tornado, hurricane, or flood cripples a community there is nothing to do except pick up the pieces and try to start over.

Likewise, Maui has no other choice, but it will take years. There is no overnight recuperation for disaster.

There will be ongoing questions about Maui’s emergency response abilities. What kind of fire department did Lahaina have? How often had they drilled and prepared for the possibility of a

widespread wildfire? Was it even something that the island thought possible?

As the smoke settles, these questions and more will be asked.

If you are reading this in the comfort and safety of your home or apartment then consider this; value what you have when you have it.

We all take the present for granted. We take our towns, schools, stores, jobs, incomes, residences, food, health, and each other for granted. We look back to the past and cherish a town that used to be. We cherish a parent or friend who used to be with us. We value and cherish old jobs and past experiences. It’s good to cherish the past. However, why not look around you today and value what and who you have – today.

In the meantime, we certainly pray for the hurting people of Maui. Most Americans will do what they can to be helpful and supportive. We always do.

That’s one of the many reasons our country is so great and so blessed.

From fighting Cancer to celebrating Christ

Part 4

We are continuing down a journey with our pain in one hand and God’s Word in the other as we look at moving from cancer to celebrating Christ. I wish I could tell you it was easy or somehow automatic in the Christian life. It’s not, but I can tell you that the book of Psalms is our close friend during this journey.

Within Psalm 42 lies another secret to moving towards celebration which we can see repeated in verses 5 and 11. The secret may sound strange to us, but we learn from this passage that we must talk to ourselves. Yes, that’s right! The psalmist asks himself, “Why are you downcast?” He is asking himself: Why are you in such despair? Why are you so depressed? But let’s notice the key to hope. The secret to moving toward

celebration is to keep talking to yourself and don’t stop. The psalmist continues the conversation by urging himself to hope in his unchanging God. It is true that the psalmist is broken and depressed, but he also knows his God is good, powerful, kind, and mighty to save.

Oh friends, let us learn from these two simple verses that when we begin to hear the whispers of despair, fear, and hopelessness in our minds, we must bring the power, promises, and presence of our everpresent, un-

changing God to mind until hopelessness is replaced by hope and fear is replaced by faith. When we find ourselves crying out, “What am I going to do now?” remember to first speak openly and honestly to our God, then speak to ourselves, asking Him for what we need and reminding ourselves that God is both willing and able to bring hope to the hopeless. Our God is mighty to save! Celebration is coming!

Revive Me O Lord Revival Services will be held CornerStone Church of God, 202 Margrace Rd., Kings Mtn., beginning Sunday, Aug. 27 at 11am and Monday thru Wednesday 28-30 at 7PM. The guest Evange-

list Wayne Miller of The Church of God (Cleveland TN) is a powerful speaker and author. We are seeking God for Life changing Spiritual renewal, salvation and healing of soul and body. Come expecting a Mighty Move of God!

MOMENT

From Page 1A

I can’t explain the feeling to anybody how that felt to watch her walk in and sign in as an administrator. I would have never guessed that would happen.”

The experience was an important one for Cailyn, too. “I felt excited and nervous to attend the meeting. Excited about the new adventure that I had worked hard to achieve and to know I was attending a meeting with my mom that I had heard her talk about for years. This was a defining moment in my career, knowing the hard work is paying off.”

Susie started her career as the PE teacher at Grover and began coaching at Kings Mountain High School in 1991. She moved to the high school to teach and continued coaching. “When Cailyn and her brother Caleb were born, I started teaching,’ she said. “I had Caleb right before I started. And then her while I was at Grover and I was coaching, so they became gym rats. They were everywhere. I mean, I’ve got pictures of them sleeping on bleachers because they were with me.”

Susie became the Assistant Principal at Grover for ten years, moving on to Shelby for one year as assistant principal and then to Union as an Assistant Principal for eight years. She is the Transportation Coordinator for Cleveland County Schools and has been in that role for seven years.

So, it isn’t surprising that Cailyn, and her brother Caleb, would gravitate toward work in Cleveland County Schools because, in a way, that is where they grew up. Susie says, “My son Caleb works in maintenance. The school system means so much to him that that’s

where he wanted to work because he knew that was a good place to be.” Many families work in Cleveland County Schools, according to Susie, and hers is no different. “Cailyn is an assistant principal, her husband Eric is in technology, my daughter-in-law Amber is a teacher assistant at Grover, and Caleb is the plumber for maintenance,” she said. For them, working for Cleveland County Schools is a family affair.

The bond between Susie and Cailyn was evident as they spoke. “We know we are in our safe place with each other. She can call and tell me how she feels. And I can call to share how I feel, and we know it will be all right between us,” Cailyn said.

“Mom coached me throughout the years, so there were times we had to put aside our mother-daughter relationship. She was the leader and told me what I needed to do to fix things.

We have a relationship and can be honest with each other and don’t take it personally. She has taught me to take criticism to improve myself and use it to my advantage.”

When asked about the transition from the classroom to administration, Cailyn said, “It’s going to be an adjustment for a while. And I have great leaders that I’m working with who are paving the way to help me lead.”

Even though Cailyn is now a wife, mother of two, and assistant principal, she and her mom always talk on their way to work. “Every morning, we have our car conversation on the way to school, and it has always been that way,” Cailyn said. This mother and daughter, now peers in the workplace, have an unshakable bond called love and a defining moment that will last a lifetime.

Joy Theater opened on June 1, 1949, in the heart of downtown Kings Mountain. The last surviving theater of three that once served the community simultaneously: The Imperial Theater, Dixie Theater, and Joy Theater. Currently, Joy Theater is undergoing a major renovation. The façade has been painted to complement the Mid-century modern architecture, with tile added to the front this week that matches the terrazzo tile in the lobby. It is anticipated that all work will be completed by February 2024, should things go according to plan.

Staff that they are not accustomed to seeing when they pay their utility bill at City Hall. While the goal is to provide participants with good information and convey a positive image of the City of Kings Mountain, this may also be an opportunity for them to ask questions about where their tax dollars are being spent and how their utility rates are determined. It is important for both Council and Staff to be prepared to answer these types of questions and address their concerns.

The City Council first expressed interest in creating a Citizens Academy in the spring of 2018 to educate the citizens of Kings Mountain about the goals and objectives of their city government and to familiarize citizens with how City government operates. Another goal of the academy was to inform citizens on how they might become involved in decisions that have a direct impact on them and their community by serving on one of the City’s many boards and commissions.

Faked punt for touchdown propels Mountaineers to 34-17 season opening victory over Shelby Lions

A fake punt for a 40-yard touchdown run by Robert Kendrick on the first play of the second quarter broke a 7-7 tie and propelled Kings Mountains Mountaineers to a 34-17 opening season victory over the Shelby Golden Lions Friday night at KM’s John Gamble Stadium.

The win was the Mountaineers’ fourth in the past five seasons over their rivals from across the creek and the first for new head coach Strait Herron, who came to KM after a remarkable career as a five-time state championship coach at South Point High School in Rock Hill, SC.

Like any other coach, Herron was pleased with the victory but knows there’s still a lot of work to do as the team gets ready for the Big South 3A Conference race.

“It was fun,” he said of his debut here. “We went out with a great attitude and a lot of motivation. But after watching the film we did a lot of great things but also some things we need to fix.”

Each team scored on its first possession to end the first quarter 7-7. Shelby won the pre-game coin toss and deferred to the second half. With transfer quarterback Zandan Zollo calling the shots the Mountaineers drove the opening kickoff 80 yards in nine plays to score on a three-run run by Teddy Jeffries and a Max Thompson extra point. Jeffries, who was the Mountaineers’ leading rusher last year when they went 13-1, was injured in the second half and his status for this week was unknown at The Herald’s press deadline.

“We don’t know how bad it is yet,” Coach Herron said. “We don’t want things like that to happen but you have to plan for the next game.

We’ll know more about it later this week.”

Shelby answered that early score with a 53 yard kickoff return to the KM 44 yard line. Four plays later Triston Tate caught a 33-yard touchdown pass and Jose Lopez kicked the point-after.

With Jeffries and Jeramiah Hill doing the bulk of the running with a pass each to Jayden Gash, Ja’Qualyn Sanders and Xorian Lenair mixed in, the Mountaineers made it to the Shelby 32 before a sack by the Lions’ defense put them back to the 40 as the first quarter came to a close.

Facing fourth and 18, Coach Herron decided it was the “perfect situation” to fake the punt.

“We felt like we could pick up the first down,” he said. “If we punted it would probably have gone in the end zone and they would’ve gotten the ball at the twenty anyway. Things just opened up and it went for a touchdown. Our quarterback called for it and the whole team handled it well.”

From there, the Mountaineers built a 17-10 lead on a 30-yard field goal from Max Thompson that zoomed to 34-10 before the Lions tacked on a final TD on a 17-yard reception by Triston Tate with 2:20 remaining in the game.

Kings Mountain took just three plays to stretch the lead to 24-10 on a 29-yard TD pass from Zollo to Lenair with 49.3 seconds left in the half.

A pass interception by Kameron Adams with four minutes left in the third quarter put the Mountaineers in business at the Lions’ 34. Three plays later Thompson kicked a 39-yard field goal to run the KM lead to 27-10.

The Lions were on their own nine yard line facing fourth and 12 when they got off just a 20-yard punt. Gash caught a 27-yard pass to two yard line and Hill scored from there to make it 34-10.

Shelby got its final TD with 2:20 remaining on a 17yard reception by Tate.

“I was really pleased with our offense,” Coach Herron said. “We spent a lot of time trying to decide on a starting quarterback. Zollo did a good job but we still have some things to work on.

“Defensively, we made a ton of mistakes. We have to be able to play sound football to win the big games.

“I was really pleased to win this one. I’ve gotten a lot of texts.”

KM travels to Cox Mill this Friday

Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers will face another tough non-conference opponent when they travel to Cox Mill Friday night for a 8 o’clock game.

Cox Mill dropped its non-conference opener last week 54-3 but it was to perennial state power Weddington. They lost their season opener last year, too, but then went on to finish 5-1 in its conference and 9-3 overall.

Cox Mill has a ton of depth with a 61-man roster that includes 18 seniors. They are members of the 4A West Conference

which includes perennial powers like Mooresville, West Cabarrus and Kannapolis A.L. Brown, Lake Norman, Hickory Ridge and South Iredell.

Kings Mountain hopes to go in at full strength but at the time of this writing it’s not certain if leading rusher Teddy Jeffries will be fully recovered from last week’s injury against Shelby.

“We will need to do a lot of work this week,” says Mountaineer head coach Strait Herron whose first win at KMHS came against the school’s longest rival, Shelby. “Cox

Mill lost to Weddington but Weddington is a really good team. Playing them after a big game like that is always a concern. We can’t take it lightly.”

The Mountaineers will go on the road again next Friday to face county-rival Burns, which is favored to win its conference for the second straight year and go deep in the state 2A playoffs again. After that the Mountaineers will take a week off before beginning Big South 3A play September 15 at Hunter Huss.

KM VICTORIOUS OVER SHELBY

JVs drop opener at Shelby, first home game Thursday

Kings Mountain High’s JV football team opened its season Thursday with a hardfought 24-22 loss at Shelby. The Mountaineers will host Cox Mill Thursday at 6:30 at Gamble Stadium.

On the Lions’ second possession of the game, they took over at KM’s 14 yard line but the Mountaineer defense came up big and stopped them at the four yard line with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter.

KM’s Savion Lindsay capped off a 96-yard drive with a 63 yard touchdown run and Jakelan Littlejohn’s two-point conversion gave the Mountaineers an 8-0 lead.

With Shelby leading 12-8, Littlejohn picked off a pass and returned it 80 yards to the Lions’ 10 yard line with just over two minutes to play in

the second quarter. On KM’s opening drive of the third quarter, Lindsay ran 58 yards for a touchdown to give the Mountaineers a 14-12 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Malachi Powell caused a fumble that was recovered by Lyric Phonephet to give the Mountaineers the ball at their own 39 yard line. Two plays later Lindsay ran it in from 63 yards out for his third touchdown of the night. Littlejohn’s second two-point conversion gave the Mountaineers a 22-18 lead.

After a Shelby score, KM was able to drive the ball to Shelby’s six yard line before giving it up on downs. Lindsay led the Mountaineer offense with 249 yards rushing, 63 yards receiving and three touchdowns.

Stranded hiker rescued with help of GCPD drone unit

On Thursday, August 17, the Gaston County Police Department was dispatched to a missing person call about an 18-year-old that had been missing since Wednesday, August 16. North Carolina Park Rangers subsequently located the missing person’s vehicle at Crowders Mountain State Park and began searching the area. Park Rangers requested assistance from the Gaston County Police Drone Unit, Gaston Emergency Medical Services (GEMS), Gastonia Fire Department, and Gaston County Emergency Management. A coordinated search of Crowders Mountain was conducted, and after a short time, County Police officers and Park Rangers could hear the missing person yelling out for help. The GCPD Drone Unit pinpointed the exact loca-

tion of the missing person in medical distress in a remote area of the mountain. The drone guided rescue personnel in and allowed GEMS personnel to have eyes on the patient to determine a treatment and rescue plan. A successful patient rescue was conducted thanks to the agencies’ joint efforts.
