Liberty Mountain opens Sept. 15

Liberty Mountain: The Revolutionary Drama opens for its eighth season this Friday, September 15. The play shares the personal trials many families faced during the period of the Battle of Kings Mountain in the South during Cornwallis’ Southern Campaign.

Cruise-In back October 14th

The GFWC Kings Mountain Woman’s Club will host a “Meet the Candidates” forum on Monday. September 25 at 6:00 p.m. at their clubhouse at 108 East Mountain Street. This is one of the last opportunities for citizens to hear candidates present their platforms and to speak with them directly before the November election.

The moderator will introduce each candidate running in the current election, and each has 3 minutes to speak.

Saturday, September 16, is the last Saturday for the Kings Mountain Farmers’ Market this year. Thanks to many folks, especially The Davidson Association, the farmers’ market was a big success this year. “We’ve had a great summer, and we want to close the season on a high note,” said Tamra Moody.

Once the KM Farmer’s Market opened on June 3, more and more participants and citizens returned to support local businesses and

buy fresh fruits and vegetables from the farm. In addition, meats, honey, flowers, sauces, artwork, bakery goods, and food trucks supported the market.

Walk Down the Street! The City of Kings Mountain will host its annual “Great Pumpkin Halloween Parade” on Tuesday, October 31. Children 0-7 and their parents are invited to gather at the City Hall Plaza, at 101 W. Gold Street, at 9:30 a.m. to line up for this spectacular spooky parade. KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Shirley Ann Valentine, 87, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on September 3, 2023 at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, NC.

Shirley was born in Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late Joseph Edward Bumgardner and Evelyn Hines Bumgardner and was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Gerald Glenn Valentine, a son, Lyn Val-

entine and her brother, “Bud” Bumgardner.

Shirley worked for more than 30 years at Grover Elementary School as the school secretary. She enjoyed getting to know every student who passed through the doors and remembered those same students her entire life.

She possessed a sharp intellect, was an avid reader and loved puzzles. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her love and memory will be cherished for a lifetime by all those who knew Shirley.

She is survived by her sons: Jerry Valentine (Phoebe) and Bruce Valentine (Beth); daughter-in-law: Terri Valentine; grandchildren: Casey Burgess (Chase), Kelly Maxwell (Wes), and Chad Jordan (Krystal); great-grandchildren:

Moffett Albert Scism

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Moffett Albert Scism, 83, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on September 10, 2023 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, NC.

He was born in Cleveland County, NC, son of the late Raymond and Mary Hovis Scism and was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Nolan, Bruce, and Paul Scism. Moffett was a longtime member of Patterson Grove Baptist Church and served his country honorably in the US Army. He

worked for Eastern Airlines as a baggage handler. Moffett enjoyed farming and was an avid fisherman. He especially loved fishing trip to the coast. Always active, Moffett was a member of the Fairview Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and a member of White Plains Shine Club for over 30 years. He served as a volunteer firefighter with Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department for more than 20 years.

Moffett was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather whose guidance, wisdom, and love will never be forgotten by anyone who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Mary Lou Wright Scism, of the home; children: Julie Hawkins and husband Michael and Todd Scism and wife Laura, both of Kings Mountain, NC; grandson: Justin Fite; great-grandson: Dayson Fite; brother: David Scism and wife Linda, Kings Mountain, NC.

was a faithful member of Victory Life Assembly of God in Cherryville, NC. She enjoyed being active, going to yard sales and spending time at the coast with her family. Myrtle was generous to a fault, and always placed others needs before her own. She loved her family with her whole heart and loved spending time with them. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother whose spirit, love, and devotion will be missed for all times by those who knew and loved Myrtle.

Virginia married Bobby at the age of 21, then attended night school where she earned her diploma in 1977. She served her community diligently as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a loving mother and grandmother who doted on her only grandchild, Zach, before being blessed with two great-grandchildren. It has been 22 years since America was attacked, and nearly 3,000 people lost their lives due to acts of terrorism against the nation on that day. The Fire Chief, Tom Harmon, welcomed everyone gathered. The Fire Chaplain, James Waseman, offered the invocation, and the Assistant Fire Chief, Josh Wall, led all in reciting The Pledge of Allegiance. The First Baptist Church Kings Mountain Ensemble, led by Pastor Johnathan Bundon, provided Patriotic Music. Mayor Scott Neisler gave the opening remarks, and Chief Harmon introduced the Keynote Speaker, USAF Master Sgt. John Whitaker. The speech was preceded by Captain Jamie Black reading The Ringing of the Bell. Patriot Day Memorial observed Monday

“In addition, Albemarle is a new sponsor,” Jim adds. “Thanks to them, every fourth grader in Cleveland County received tickets for them and a parent. Every fourth grader in Cleveland County can see the play this year, around 1,400 students. That is huge.”

“Moving to the Fall allowed us to do a school drive.

This year, three schools from Gaston, Cleveland, and Cherokee Counties will join us for three school-day performances. That accounts for another 750 students who will see the play,” Jim said. “The

sponsorship from Albemarle helped us accomplish our goal for an educational component with the play.”

“The Patrick family is our Founding Sponsor, and they support us in all ways, and we are very thankful for their support.” Another key sponsor this year is the City of Kings Mountain Tourism and Development Authority.

“This year, we have included the Catawba Indians into the play, as well. Because many lived in this area and traded with the settlers,” Bob added. “We have done the research and cannot prove that the Catawba Indians participated in the battle. But we do know that they interacted with the settlers and would have traded with them. They are also very much a part of this story.”

When asked about the cast, Bob said, “We have 26 cast members this year, and they are the most experienced theater cast, top to bottom, that we have had so far. They

know what they are doing, hit their marks, and do a wonderful job.”

In addition to the play, Jim has lots going on with the theater. And moving to the Fall put an increased workload on the Liberty Mountain committees. “I think it will be a rewarding season for us, and we will accomplish what we set out to do: Educate, entertain, and have a great show.”

The theater remains under renovation, so Jim asks patrons to “excuse our dust.”

They will have the facility ready for the performance, but due to supply and demand issues, new doors will not be installed until after the season. Performances are on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, September 15,16,17, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, October 1, 6, and 8. Quit Your Stinkin’ Thinkin’ Part 2, Whatever is True

When it came to changing your stinkin’ thinkin’ this week, how did you do? Admittedly, some moments were better than others for me. There were a few times I allowed doublemindedness to invade my thoughts and actions. Thankfully, there were far more successes than failures. It is important to remember that casting our cares and anxieties on the Lord is not a one-time deal. Indeed, God gives us instructions to help us in this jour-

ney. The Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8 instruct, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

This way of thinking is not a one-time event but rather a daily pursuit for life. Let us consider the first word on this list, truth. The truth Paul speaks of is godly truth. There is God’s

truth and then there is what this world claims as truth. This is nothing new. Judges 17:6 reminds us: “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Today, just as in the past, the world says there is no such thing as truth, but God’s word says differently. Thinking and knowing God’s truth allows us to face adversity, criticism, and daily living with courage and confidence. The Bible is God’s word and God’s word is truth. Psalm 25:5 implores “Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior,

and my hope is in you all day long.” Let us look at a couple of Godly truths that we can think on and rejoice in.

1. You are God’s special creation. No matter what you think or what the world says, you are special. The psalmist declares, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14 NIV) Isn’t it comforting to know that you are special. Along with that we can add this:

2. You are loved. You are loved so much that “God so loved the world

that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) I am sure most of you know this verse by heart, but it is crucial we recognize the hope and promise of this verse. The truth is, Jesus came to save us because he loves us, and that is a truth worth keeping in our hearts and minds.

This week, I hope we will meditate on God’s truths in scripture and rejoice in knowing that God is truth and God is love.

Watch where you step during Chalk Fest

Let your inner artist escape on the sidewalks in Uptown Shelby as the Cleveland County Arts Council presents Chalk Fest, a fun, family-friendly sidewalk chalk competition on the Court Square, around the Earl Scruggs Center, Saturday, Sept. 16 from 9 a.m. - noon. Children to adults, groups, and individuals are invited to sign up for an individual square to create artwork during Chalk Fest.

Judging will begin at noon, with the winners announced when judging is completed. Prizes are $125 for best in the Group category (two or more people), $100 for Adults (age 18+), $50 cash prize for best in the Youth category (age 11 – 17), and $25 for best in the Children’s division (age 10 and under). The event goes rain or shine, and no refunds are offered.

There will also be plenty of “free space” for those who wish to participate

without competing. The public is invited to watch the artists as the sidewalk masterpieces are created or to enjoy them later in the day.

Pre-registration is suggested to guarantee your spot. On-site registration starts at 8:30 a.m. on War-ren Street and costs $5 for individuals and $10 for groups, which includes a box of chalk. Extra chalk may be purchased during the event. Museum’s 20th Annual Reverse Raffle & Auction Saturday

8th Annual Miss Mountie Scholarship Pageant

Miss Mountie Scholarship Pageant Organization has announced the date for their 8th Annual Miss Mountie Scholarship Pageant on October 15, 2023 at 6 p.m. The pageant will be held at the Family Worship Center in Kings Mountain.

The pageant started in 2016 by Miss Sophia Kellstrom as her Senior Project for Kings Mountain High School. Kellstrom’s inspiration for the pageant began when she started competing in pageants at age seven. According to Kellstrom, “I gained many incredible life skills from my participation and wanted to offer those same opportunities to other young ladies in my hometown.”

The pageant awards a cash scholarship, crown, sash and gifts for Miss Mountie who

should be a high school senior 17-19 years of age. The current Miss Mountie, Anna Holder, will be awarded a $1200 scholarship when she crowns her successor this coming October 15. The scholarship money is a combination of donations from the Kings Mountain community and ad sales from the pageant's program book. The organization proudly passes on 100% of ad sale's money to the scholarship fund.

Other age divisions for the Miss Mountie Scholarship Pageant are as follows and will receive a crown, sash and gifts: Tiny 4-6 years of age, Little 7-9 years of age, Young 10-11 years of age, Junior 12-13 years of age; and, Teen 14-16 years of age. Additionally, new titles added this year are Baby Miss Mountie

Cleveland County Solid Waste Decal Program discontinued

As part of the FY 23-24 budget, Cleveland County Government discontinued the Solid Waste Decal Program. The initiative was designed to be a two-year pilot program. It was introduced in July 2021 and went into effect in October to ensure collection sites are reserved for the sole use of Cleveland County residents whose tax dollars pay for the solid waste program. In July 2021, the county mailed two window decals to residents. Decals were to be placed in

6-12 months, Wee Miss Mountie 13-24 months; and, Mini Miss Mountie 25-36 months old. The pageant's Executive Director, Molora Kellstrom noted "The pageant has grown every year. And partly due to the pageant's growth and interest, we are thrilled to add the baby/toddler divisions this year."

Each contestant must compete in a private interview (length dictated by age), an on-stage question, Mountie Spirit Wear and evening gown. Contestants are required to compete for most photogenic but can elect to compete for the audience choice awards. Audience Choice is awarded to the participant donating the most non-perishable food items. All donations will go to the Earthen Vessels benevolence ministry. Contestants do not need to attend Kings Mountain Schools; however, they must reside in the Kings Mountain area and be able fulfill all contractual Kings Mountain events. Please note baby/toddler divisions are exempt from the private interview and on-stage question portion of the pageant. Furthermore, baby/toddler divisions will compete on Saturday, October 14. Entry fee for ALL age divisions is $50. There will be a Miss Mountie Pageant interest meeting on Sunday, September 24 from 3pm to 4pm followed by a mandatory contestant meeting on Sunday, October 1 from 3pm-4pm. Employees will continue to monitor the use of convenience sites by out-of-county residents and educate those who are not in compliance.”

Cleveland County Solid Waste Division has two landfills and seven convenience centers county-wide. The Self-McNeilly and Airport Road landfill hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday. A Delicious Country at the museum

presented “A Delicious Country” at Kings Mountain Historical Museum’s Author Talk on Saturday, September 9, at 1 p.m. John Lawson journeyed through the Carolinas in 1700, and three centuries later, Huler followed in his footsteps. In many ways, “A Delicious Country” is a sequel to “A New Voyage to Carolina.”

The backstory is that of John Lawson, who left London and landed in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1700, hoping to make a name for himself at 25. For reasons unknown, he soon undertook a two-month journey through the still-mysterious Carolina backcountry. His travels yielded his book “A New Voyage to Carolina” in 1709, one of the most significant early American travel narratives, rich with observations about the region's environment and Indigenous people.

Lawson later helped found North Carolina's first two cities, Bath and New Bern; became the colonial surveyor-general; contributed specimens to the British Museum; and was killed as the first casualty of the Tuscarora War. Yet despite his significant contributions and remarkable history, Lawson is little remembered, even in the Carolinas he documented.

Scott Huler is a reporter, writer, and all-around curious person, describing himself as wanting to notice and understand things. His advice to everyone is to “Pay Attention”. In Lawson, he found

a kindred spirit as someone who noticed and paid attention, evidenced by the details included in his book. Huler described Lawson as “Some guy who took a walk in the woods. Not much more is known about him before that time.” But Lawson left an indelible mark on the history of our state during his short time in America.

Lawson's trip into the Carolinas meandered from Charleston to the Santee, up the Trading Path (today’s I-85), Salisbury, Hillsboro, Durham, and ultimately Bath.

Along the way, Lawson met Indigenous people who welcomed him with open arms and were as curious about him as he was about them. They provided him with places to sleep and food to eat. Lawson shared his concern about them and how long it would take for those feelings to change once growth took away more and more of their land. Scott says, “Lawson knew he was seeing the end of something. At that moment, the world was on the knife edge of change, and he witnessed it.”

In 2014, 314 years later, Scott Huler left home and family for his journey by foot and canoe, faithfully retracing John Lawson's route through the Carolinas. He chronicled the unlikely voyage, revealing what it's like to rediscover your own home.

Along the way, he took notes about things he saw and people he met: Cyprus swamps, barbecue, and tobacco fields. He also saw deserted areas, abandoned

homes, and rusted-out vehicles – places he described as “abandoned areas melting back into the countryside.”

He also saw farms, once owned by families and now by corporations. Huler felt he, too, was witnessing the knife edge of change.

And Huler had many ways to keep people aware of his 2019 journey. He tracked it using Google Maps at Lawsontrack.com. The site is still available. He utilized Instagram, a blog, and a website. Families hosted him. He also slept on picnic tables, in tents, and on the ground. He took photos, sharing the spots he visited, often photographing plants through a macro lens. Along the way, he found railroad spikes and ascertained the proper places for roads that span from “where you are to where you want to be.”

Unlike Lawson, Huler’s trip was funded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, and Scientific American magazine. Eventually, he would visit the British Museum and touch the specimens collected by Lawson. “As a reporter, you often get to touch things

Mountaineer football resumes Friday at Hunter Huss High

Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers return to the playing field Friday night to face a fast and dangerous Hunter Huss team in the first Big South 3A Conference game of the 2023 season.

The Mountaineers go to Gastonia with a 3-0 record after defeating three strong opponents in Shelby, Cox Mill and Burns. Huss comes in with a 1-2 mark but that record is deceiving as their two losses were to two very good teams, 4A Providence 41-20

and perennial state power Hibriten 22-19. The Huskies defeated another good western team, Draughn, 44-21 last week.

“They have some good athletes overall and some good skilled athletes that we will have to concentrate on,” said Coach Strait Herron. “We’ll have to bottle them up on offense and the defense will have to attack when we need to. They have very good speed in the skill positions. Their quarterback (Javarion

Brown) is a good athlete and their running backs are quick and have speed.”

Brown, a junior, is hard to handle as a runner and passer and is averaging 98 yards per game passing and 12 yards per carry rushing. Running back Darius Headley is averaging 98 yards a game (7.2 per carry) and Gene Neely is averaging 61 yards per game.

“I hope we learned a lesson last week at Burns and make sure we don’t turn the ball over and give up big

plays,” Herron said.

Kings Mountain may have to run by committee as two of their top players, Teddy Jeffries and Micah Ward, are nursing injuries.

“We will be without Jeffries for four to six weeks,” he noted. “He found it out when they did X-rays. We’re working with some guys that we can use as backups to Josiah. Micah won’t be back this week so we’re hurting a little at linebacker and back-up running backs. We’re making

sure Robert Kendrick’s good and Josiah Hill’s good to go, and (JV player) Savion Lindsay if we need him.

“Huss has speed and quickness and uses the whole field,” he noted. “If they spread you out on the field they could be hard to catch.”

Offensively, Herron said, “we’ll have to protect the ball. That’s going to be a big part.”

The Mountaineers are back to regular practice after school this week after being

out of school last week.

“Hopefully, there will be no more key issues,” he said. “We hope we’ll have good weather and can work things out in a timely manner.

“Beating Burns to go 3-0 is a momentum thing as we go into the conference season,” Herron added. “We should feel good about that but we can do even better. We haven’t played a complete game yet and that’s a good sign that we have to get better.”

KM Cross Country second at Ashbrook

Kings Mountain

High’s cross country teams braved a hot afternoon to finish second to host Ashbrook in the Green Wave’s Luminary Cross Country Meet last week in Gastonia.

The temperature was still very hot even with a 6:40 p.m. starting time. Six teams participated.

The Mountaineers’ Isaiah Watts twisted his ankle while leading the race and had to stop. Max Thompson stepped up and finished second overall to

lead the Mountaineers.

Freshman Luke Howell also earned a medal with an eighth place finish.

The girls race was dominated by South Point with only Kings Mountain’s Brooke Wiseman finishing third to prevent a perfect score for the Lady Red Raiders. KM’s Sara Eagle also earned a medal with her eighth place finish.

Kings Mountain was scheduled to compete at the Cleveland Community College course yesterday.

Women’s golf second in first Big South match

Kings Mountain High’s women’s golf team finished second to South Point in the first Big South Conference match of the season Monday at Woodbridge Golf Club.

The Lady Raiders posted a 121 score to Kings Mountain’s 155. Crest was

third at 158 followed by Stuart Cramer 162, Ashbrook 171 and Forestview 174. North Gaston and Hunter Huss competed but did not have enough players for a team score.

Kaliyah Watson led Kings Mountain with a 45. Mylin Exkard shot 53 and

Jaiden Earle 57.

Co-medalists were Amelia Connor and Madison Pruden, both from South Point, with 39s.

The BSC teams will meet again today at Crowder’s Mountain Golf Club. Hunter Huss will be the host team.

Don’t fall for student loan scams

In a press release last week, Attorney General Josh Stein warned citizens about student loan scams. As the student loan landscape evolves, borrowers face shifting deadlines, confusion, and uncertainty. As of September 1, the student loan payment pause has been lifted. The City of Kings Mountain owns and operates a natural gas system that provides service to industrial, commercial, and residential customers in and around the city limits of Kings Mountain for use in manufacturing, space heating, water heating, and cooking.

Kings Mountain’s Natural gas pipelines quietly, reliably and efficiently deliver natural gas throughout the City for domestic and industrial use. As part of the greater industry’s 2.3 million miles of natural gas and liquid pipelines, Kings Mountain operates natural gas distribution and transmission pipelines that safely deliver large quantities of energy to fuel the economy and keep us warm every day. Pipelines are the safest and most cost effective way of delivering energy in existence. The City of Kings Mountain would like to inform residents about the accident prevention efforts that are undertaken to maintain the excellent pipeline safety record of the industry. Kings Mountain inspects mains and services that are excavated as well as monitors above-ground piping for corrosion. We apply and monitor corrosion prevention measures to prevent steel from deteriorating below ground and regularly patrol surface conditions for hazards to the pipelines. We also use leak detection equipment that can detect the tiniest quantity of gas to determine whether a leak may exist below ground. Equipment is inspected and maintained regularly as well, including below ground emergency valves.

In its ‘natural’ state, natural gas is colorless and odorless. The natural gas received by the City of Kings Mountain for its distribution system is mixed with an odorant, so it is easier to recognize a natural gas pipeline release. The odorant added to the natural gas gives the gas a distinctive smell, often described as “rotten egg”. The City monitors the existence of this odorant to ensure its presence.

Accidental releases of gas do occasionally occur, and in addition to the distinctive smell, other indications of a release may be a hissing sound, roaring sound, or blowing of dirt or dust. Persistent bubbles in water or pools of liquid with possible bubbling can also indicate a pipeline leak. If you smell, see or hear any indications of a possible natural gas leak, please call the City of Kings Mountain’s Natural Gas Division at 704-734-4516 or emergency officials at 911 immediately.

If there is an unintended release of gas, the main hazard is the chance of fire or explosion. If you have a gas release situation, immediately walk away, warning others to stay away or leave the area. Extinguish all sources of ignition such as, open flames, cell phones, pagers, motor vehicles or any other item that may cause a spark or static discharge. From a safe location contact the City of Kings Mountain at the number listed above or emergency officials.

The leading cause of accidental releases of gas is due to damage of a below ground line by someone performing excavation or earth moving. The “ONE-CALL” system was setup to help prevent this hazard. If you dig, please contact NC One-Call Center toll-free at 811 or log on to the website http://www.nc811.org to request a location of underground utilities. North Carolina STATE LAW requires that excavators give at least a 3-Day Notice (3 full working days not including the day of the call) prior to excavation.

CCSO needs help locating missing teen

CCSO drug bust on I-85 Thursday

On September 7, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office Community Interdiction Team (CIT) conducted a vehicle stop on I85. During this stop, the deputies, with the assistance of K-9 Karma located approximately 3 kilos of methamphetamine and a firearm. The two subjects in the vehicle Selvin Rene Chavez, 39, of 2006 Crossway Circle, Charlotte, and Jose Manuel Franco-Gonzales, 24, of 109 Kingsford Drive, Charlotte, were arrested and taken to the Cleveland County Detention Center.

Rabid raccoon on Pinnacle Road

On Sunday, September 3, at approximately 7:51 p.m., Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement received a call from the 700 block of Pinnacle Road in Kings Mountain, in reference to a family dog that bit and killed a raccoon in their yard. The dog was current on its rabies vaccination and received a booster shot shortly after the incident.

Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident and impounded the deceased raccoon on 09/3/2023. The raccoon was sent to

the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. The official laboratory results were received on September 6, at approximately 12:30 p.m., indicating that the raccoon tested positive for rabies.

Animal Care and Enforcement completed a neighborhood canvass near Pinnacle Road Kings Mountain, to notify the community of the positive rabies results and verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area.

Dept. of Defense awards Albemarle $90M

Albemarle Corporation, a global leader in providing essential elements for mobility, energy, connectivity, and health, announced today that the U.S. Department of Defense has approved a $90 million grant to help support the expansion of domestic mining and lithium production for the nation’s battery supply chain.

The funding will be provided by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy, utilizing Defense Production Act authorities, and will be used to purchase a fleet of mining equipment as part of the company’s planned reopening of its lithium mine in Kings Mountain, North Carolina.

Mountain mine contains one of the few known hard rock lithium deposits in the U.S. The site is expected to feed sufficient material for 50 kt LCE of conversion capacity and support the manufacturing initially of approximately 1.2 million electric vehicles annually.

How Seniors Can Save on Prescription Drug Costs

Dear Savvy Senior, I take several medications for multiple health conditions and the prices keep going up, even with my Medicare prescription drug insurance. Can you recommend any tips that can help cut my costs?

Dear Tina,

The high cost of prescription drugs is an ongoing problem that stings everyone, but it usually affects seniors more because they have a greater need for medications and because Medicare doesn’t cover all their drug costs.

While the Inflation Reduction Act, that was signed into law last year, will help seniors save on their medications by negotiating lower drug prices and caping out-of-pocket spending at $2,000, it will be a few years before the law is fully enacted. In the meantime, here are some different strategies that can help reduce your costs so you can afford what you need.

Talk to your doctor: A good first step is to review your medications

once a year with your doctor to find out if any of them can be stopped or reduced. If you’re taking any brandname drugs check to see if they are available in a cheaper generic form. Also, for any drugs you’re taking long-term ask your doctor for a cheaper three or six-month prescription, versus a one month. And find out if any of the pills you’re taking can be cut in half. Pill splitting allows you to get two months’ worth of medicine for the price of one. If you do this, you’ll need to get a prescription for twice the dosage you need.

Review your insurance: Carefully review your drug coverage during the open enrollment period, which runs Oct. 15 – Dec. 7 for Medicare beneficiaries. Make sure all your regular medications are covered in the plan’s formulary; that your current pharmacy is in the plan’s network; and that your plan covers additional medication coverage in the gap. To shop and compare Medicare prescription drug plans go to Medicare.gov/plan-compare.

Pay cash: Not using insurance for prescriptions seems counterintuitive, but in some cases, it may save you money. For example, many chain pharmacies and big-box stores like Walmart and Costco have their own prescription savings programs that may be lower than your insurance copayment. Or you can use coupons through GoodRx.com or RxSaver. com that can save you up to 80 percent off the list price of generic and some brand-name drugs in certain pharmacies.

Shop online: You can also save on regularly used medications by having them sent to you from a mail-order pharmacy. Check with your health insurer or regular pharmacy to see whether it will get you a better deal. If not, check online pharmacies like CostPlusDrugs.com or HoneybeeHealth.com. With these, you may spend less in some cases than you might with insurance.

Buy from Canada: Because prescription drugs are often much cheaper north of the border, many Amer-

icans have chosen this option for years. While this is technically illegal in most states, the Food and Drug Administration generally does not stop people from doing it. If you want to explore this option use PharmacyChecker.com, an online tool that will help you identify reputable Canadian and international online pharmacies.

Get more help: If your income is limited, you may also be able to get help through Medicare’s Extra Help program (Medicare.gov/ basics/costs/help/drug-costs), your state pharmaceutical assistance program (Medicare.gov/plan-compare/#/ pharmaceutical-assistance-program/ states) or patient assistance programs (Medicare.gov/pharmaceutical-assistance-program).
