Worley hired as City of KM Economic Development Manager

City of Kings Mountain hired their new Economic Development Manager Michael Worley about a month ago and, he has made great strides to meet with businesspeople in town. He is familiar with Kings Mountain, having gone to high school in Gastonia and is from the Chapel Grove/Crowders Mountain area of Gaston County.

Michael comes to Kings Mountain with a diverse background, giving him a unique perspective in his new role with the city. His own experiences in a variety of business helps him understand the challenges if running a business.

He has been in sales and marketing since 1999, when he started out selling Kirby vacuums door to door, earning top awards, and winning trips across the world. Sales tax increase on the November ballot

On November 8, Cleveland County voters can weigh in on a proposed sales tax increase during the General Election. The proposed increase would increase county sales taxes from 6.5 percent to 7 percent, and the funds generated would be earmarked for Cleveland County Schools (CCS). The sales tax increase equates to 25 cents for every $10 spent.

Assistant County Manager Kerri Melton spoke during the recent Cleveland County Board of Commissioners meeting saying, “One of your strategic goals was to continue to partner with Cleveland County Schools with the goal to increase teacher supplements and develop a long-term school capital improvement plan. This board has continued to be forward thinking. You realize school capital is a huge part of the county budget and want to continue that momentum of planning for the future and

• Sales and use taxes do not apply to commonly pur-

chased items like unprepared food (i.e., groceries), gasoline, prescription drugs, and motor vehicles.

• Passing this sales tax referendum will not affect Cleveland County’s property tax rate. An additional one-quarter of a percent sales tax would generate twice as much revenue as having one cent added to the property tax rate.• Sales tax generates revenue from visitors, in addition to residents. Everyone who shops in Cleveland County pays sales tax.

• A total of 46 counties in North Carolina have approved the one-quarter of a percent sales tax referendum including county neighbors Gaston, Lincoln, Catawba, and Rutherford Counties.

The Sales Tax Referendum will be located at the end of the ballot. When voting, you will be asked to vote “FOR” or “AGAINST” a one-quarter of a percent increase to the local sales and use tax.

Cleveland County Potato Projects plans to harvest potatoes at the

Patterson Springs plot on Sulphur Springs Rd the last week of September. Unfortunately, that was the only plot that survived this year.

According to Doug Sharp last week, he reported as only he can, “If you are keeping score, it is Deer 2, Potato Project 1.”

Potatoes from this nonprofit feed many Cleveland County residents annually.

I’m all for electric cars, especially if someone else is buying them! If 20 percent of America’s driving population goes to the electric vehicle (EV), then surely gasoline will become cheaper. Less people buying gasoline will reduce the demand and it should reduce the price. WeCaliforniahope. will not allow the sale of gasoline cars by 2035.This same state told EV drivers not to charge their electric cars during the past Labor Day weekend when the temperatures were expected to hit triple digits for millions of residents due to it putting a drain on the power grid.

This brings us to the same crisis every community will face. America’s

power grids aren’t ready to accommodate millions of EVs plugging in a for a recharge. The prospects of city and regional blackouts are alarming. You can forget charging your car. You won’t be able to charge your cell phone or have air conditioning or heat during a blackout.

I’m not opposed to electric cars. I AM opposed to them being crammed down our throats. The manufacturers are being pushed to eventually eliminate all gasoline vehicles. We will see how this goes over the next 10 years.

Also, plan to spend some money. A local salesman talked to me about an electric Mustang. Stickered at $48,000, but they were asking $58,000 because, as he said, “We can get it.” I didn’t want the car to begin with but was curious about the car.

It sounds time consuming to recharge an EV, although some EVs are promising up to a 150-mile charge in a short amount of time.EVscould mean fewer people on America’s interstates. Currently in most American communities it’s much easier to go home to recharge at

your own power station. Cross-country driving will be out of the question or very difficult in an EV for the next two or three years.

Currently an EV will go about 250 to 350 miles on a charge. This means you will always be searching for the next power station. This will be a major lifestyle

They will also want to recoup their costs. The car will cost you more money. You will spend anywhere from $2,000 (low minimum) to $6,000 to install a station in your home and this is all variable. To keep your car charged at home will cost you about what you spend on your monthly electric bill now. So, figure your electric bill doubling, if you’re

This drawing of the town of Kings Mountain ran in Harpers Weekly magazine dated October 30, 1880. It was recently found by Hayne Neisler, who sent this image to the Herald. The citizens of Kings Mountain and their guests celebrated the centennial that day near the old Gold Mine across from Paul Hord’s Fish Camp. Roads to the battleground were not good in those days. Yet, a centennial marker was placed, and visitors made the trip just to see it. The town of Kings Mountain was featured in an article honoring the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. The highlight of the celebration was the unfurling of a giant American flag as depicted in sketch above. The flag was flown from the pinnacle of Kings Mountain on a 70-foot flagpole and could be seen in clear weather from the observation deck of the Commerce Hotel in Lincolnton over twenty-five miles away. The flag was a gift from the Airline Railway to the town of Kings Mountain. If anyone knows what happened to the huge flag, please share.

This is part of $1.5 billion awarded this round nationwide through the competitive grant program for highway, multimodal freight and rail projects under the 2021 Law. NC extends grants for early care and learning teacher pay

Fall is a wonderful time to hone your shooting skills before you head out for the first hunt of the season.

Locally, North Carolina Wildlife Commissions announces the Foothills Glock Challenge on November 19 and 20 at the Foothills Public Shooting Complex at 238 Fielding Road in Cherryville. Volunteers are also needed for this event.

In less than 10 years, the Wildlife Commission has acquired, renovated, or built 13 shooting ranges in North Carolina, creating safe access to target shooting and limitless educational opportunities. Prior to these secure areas to shoot, target shooting was typically done on game lands, resulting in safety concerns and damage to natural Annualresources.visitation to the

Wildlife Commission ranges hovers around 58,000, and fees to users are free to minimal. The agency’s goal is to provide a safe shooting opportunity within a 50mile radius of every North Carolinian. Careful evaluation goes into each selecting site, including a landscape review, sound study, environmental assessment, and public information meeting.

Over the years, the design of the facilities has evolved. Sites now feature baffles, controlled access points, acoustical panels for noise reduction, shoot tubes and adjustable seats. Lead reclamation is also a priority.

About 91,000 pounds of lead have been removed from our ranges —that’s an estimated 5.5 million rounds!

Obedience

Now that’s a word I can relate to. My parents believed in applying the “book of larnin’ to the seat of knowledge” if you know what I mean. We called the episodes of corporal punishment, “going for a ride on the merry-go‘round.” Daddy would hold my left hand and chase me around in circles as I tried to flee from the switch or belt.I still remember vividly

of sense then although I can still see the tear rolling down his cheek as he spoke. But it became clear when I had to give my 4 year old daughter her first real spanking for some infraction of house rules

and then lying about it. I rolled my belt up so only about 4 or 5 inches was to be wielded and tapped her rear end a couple of times, trying to maintain a stern face. She cried of course and I told her to stay in her room till she could apologize to her Mom for the sin and then I went to my room and cried like a baby. I didn’t want to inflict pain on my child, but as parents, we had the responsibility of teaching her right from wrong and felt more than words were sometimes required in the process.

God teaches His chil-

dren in much the same way. We are given warning after warning in Scripture to heed God’s commandments. But we are also shown episode after episode where God’s chosen people, Israel, failed to heed the warnings and followed after false God’s. Proverbs 13:24 and 19:18 speak to instructing parents of the need for stern discipline of disobedient children if we truly love them. And Hebrews 12:5 - 11 expounds upon this as does many other Scriptures.

God punishes His children because He loves them and wants to bless them, but can only do so if they obey His FurtherWord. explanation of this principle is found in Deuteronomy 11:26 - 28.

God says we have only 2 options. (v.26) #1 - Walk in obedience to My Word and obey My commandments and I will bless you. (v.27) #2 - Walk in disobedience to My Word and disobey My commandments and I will curse you. (v.28) Now I am not the smartest cookie in the jar, but I didn’t have to think twice about which option I favored. Unfortunately not enough sometimes, but when He has gotten my attention and I repented and turned back to the straight and narrow, I have indeed been forgiven and blessed. But to be honest, I think the greatest punishment for me has been remembering the times I have sinned. Those memories for me encourage Obedience.

Board member Andrew Fulton introduced two hit records being inducted by artists from Cleveland County: Patty Loveless’ “Timber I’m Falling in Love,” and Alicia Bridges “I Love the Nightlife.” Crimson Rose performed both songs. CCMHF’s 2022 Inductees were honored individually. First recognized was J & K Music Shop, owned by JB and Kathleen Lewis and Herman and Dean Dawson. The shop was located at 127 W. Graham Street in Shelby for 30 years and the music from 45rpm records filled homes in the community.Accepting the award was Candace Humphries who later commented, “Last night I had the honor of accepting the plaques for my great aunt and uncle, JB and Kathleen Lewis and my grandparents Herman and Jean Dawson, who owned and operated J&K Records, as they were part of the inaugural class of inductees into the Cleveland County Music Hall of Fame. Thank you, Phil Weathers, and the board of the Cleveland County Music Hall of Fame for remembering and honoringBobbythem.”Rogers, owner of Bobby’s Records and Rogers Theatre, was also inducted for his contributions to the community. Accepting the award on behalf of the Rogers Theater Restoration Project were Montana Judd and Brittany Payne, owners of the Rogers Theatre. Montana noted that Bobby Rogers was actively involved int the community and was the last surviving member of the Shelby Optimist Club.

Sarah Lee Owensby pre-

sented the award to Theron Feemster, with whom she attended Kings Mountain High School. Describing Feemster, she reminisced about his days as a drummer in the high school marching band and noted, “When he performed, that was the most lit that band ever was!” She went on to share that Feemster and his family helped many by sharing their love of Jesus and reminding everyone, “With God, all is possible.”

In his senior year, Feemster was accepted into the Berkley School of Music. The caveat was that he had to be able to read music, which at the time he could not. However, he taught himself to read music in a brief time and went on to college. While there, he laid down some beats in his dorm room and his roommate shared them with a friend in the music business. From that, Feemster’s beats became the theme song for Men in Black II.

Feemster described that his creativity comes from God talking to him in the quiet moments. He shared, “If God created you – he only creates masterpieces. So never think of yourself as less. You are beautiful to God and to me.” He performed and improvisational song on the spot, drawing his energy from the crowd.

Hugh Dover was inducted into CCMHF by Andy Foster, former announcer at WOHS. Hugh was married to Sue Haynes for 57 years. He served his county in WWII and was assigned to the War Crimes Trial as a member of the guard. During his time at WOHS, he often invited Don Gibson and Earl Scruggs to perform at the radio station. He is most beloved for singing “Happy Birthday” to those celebrating birthdays in the community.

Executive Director of the Don Gibson Theater Stan Lowrey honored Don Gibson who recorded 350 songs, 96 of which charted. Twenty-three of his songs were in the topten, and six songs went to #1. Dale Brittan and Randy Saxon performed “Blue Blue Day.” The Carolina Band performed “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Sweet Dreams,” and “Oh, Lonesome Me.”

The final inductee was Earl Scruggs, presented by Earl Scruggs Center Board of Director JT Scruggs who said, “Earl was very humble. Of this award he would simply say, ‘This is great.” Earl Scruggs loved to come back home and love to talk about Cleveland County. He shared that Earl was an innovator and liked trying new things. He never sat still. Aside from Elton John, the Earl Scruggs Review, a collaboration between Earl and his sons, was the most popular acts on college campuses in the 1970s.Randy Escobedo became friends with Earl in the 70s and strived to play the banjo like him. Earl once shared with Randy that, after developing three-finger picking style at 10-years-old, he “ran through the house yelling to his family, ‘I got it, I got it!’”

Randy performed “Earl’s Breakdown,” “Flint Hills Special,” “Foggy Mountain Breakdown, and “The Ballad of Jed Clampet.” The Jacktown Ramblers performed “I Wonder Where You Are Tonight,” “Groundspeed,” and “Tickle the Tomcat’s ConcludingTail.”the event was a final jam session performing, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” including the entire company, Chris Ferree and the Medicine Show, The Dancing Fleas, and

New COVID boosters available soon

Updated boosters are becoming available in North Carolina this week, following the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) authorization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) announcement that people 12 and older can receive an updated booster to protect against the latest COVID-19 variants.

On September 6, Atrium Health announced it is preparing to offer the new COVID19 vaccine booster designed to protect against COVID variants. The FDA amended the emergency use authorizations (EUAs) of the Moderna (18+) and Pfizer-BioNTech (12+) COVID-19 vaccines to now allow for the bivalent or “updated booster”. Both pharmaceutical companies cite the updated booster will provide broader protection against current circulating variants.

The updated booster is referred to as a bivalent vaccine as it targets both the original coronavirus strain and the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants. It relies on safety and efficacy data from initial clinical trials, studies of bivalent boosters, and extensive safety and effectiveness monitoring. This process is similar to the

one used to create the annual flu vaccine, which targets new strains each year.

As of mid-August, these subvariants made up nearly 90% of COVID-19 cases in North Carolina. People ages 5-11 years can still receive the original booster, but it is expected that the updated booster will be available for younger people in the coming weeks.

For the week ending September 8, Cleveland County reported 306 new coronavirus cases for the week ending Sunday. That number is up 5.88% from the previous week. Despite this, the total number of deaths decreased while the number of tests increased.

North Carolina reported 12,138 new coronavirus cases in the week, with a positivity rate of 15-19.9 %. Hospitalizations across the state were reported at 132.29 at covid.cdc.

KM rebounds from opening kickoff return to beat Huskies

The son of a former Kings Mountain football player returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to give visiting homecoming foe Hunter Huss an early lead of 7-0 but the Mountaineers rebounded for a 44-14 victory in their first Big South 3A Conference game Friday at John Gamble Stadium.

The Huskies, who came to town with less than 30 players and would lose a few more from injuries during the contest, stayed right with the home team for the first half after sophomore Jayden Gash, whose father Daryl played for the Mountaineers in the early nineties, made that early stunner.The Huskies’ defense held the Mountaineers to three and out on their first possession but the KM defense began turning the tide moments later when it blocked a Huss punt which Robert Kendrick recovered at the Huskies’ 38. Teddy Jeffries had three straight carries behind good blocking by the O-line to set up a three-yard touchdown run by big AJ Richardson and Jaden Ellis split the uprights for the tying extra point. Kings Mountain didn’t trail again but Huss was still in the game until late in the third quarter when the Mountaineers broke away from a 22-14 halftime lead to put its fourth straight win in the bag and drop the Huskies to 1-3.“Everybody was slow getting going,” noted KM

offensive coordinator/line coach Kevin Cruise. “We didn’t play our best but we got a lot better in the second

Thehalf.”Mountaineers took the lead for good after the second Huss possession. After Ellis’s kickoff was returned to the Huskies’43 the Huskies were penalized 25 yards for holding and a late hit on the same play. Littlejohn’s scrambling pass of 12 yards to Jake Lloyd and Zay Smith’s first down run of 10 yards for a first down at the Huss 12 set up a Jeffries’ twoyard TD run and a twopoint conversion pass from Bryson Brown to Simpson for a 37-14 lead with 10:18 left.

With Huss facing third and 23 from its own 15, Simpson and Eli Lipscomb combined for a sack and the Huskies had to punt. Xzorion Lenair returned it from the 50 to the Huss 11. TheWildcats.Mountaineers go into the Big South Conference game with an unbeaten 4-0 overall record while the Wildcats are 0-4. But just like KM’s opponent last week, the Hunter Huss Huskies, the Wildcats have some really good players who can be hard to contain.Leading the pack for new head coach Dan Rothwell is sophomore running back JJ Gordon who is their leading rusher and scorer. Junior quarterback Tj Belton is also impressive as a runner and passer. He has some good receivers in Jurnee Lattimore and Isaiah Banks.

The Wildcats have been in every game except a 65-14 defeat to a very good Chase team. North was in every other game early but fell in the second half to East Gaston 28-8, 4A Alexander Central 17-8 and Big South Conference foe Gastonia Forestview 20-0 last week.

“In a lot of ways, North Gaston is similar to Hunter Huss,” noted Mountaineer head coach Greg Lloyd.

“Their numbers are not great but they have some people with good speed. Their quarterback is a dual threat and they played very good defense against Foerestview. They only gave up 20 points. They’re very capable of making big plays. We have to put in four good quarters.”

“They have a new coach and he’s trying to put his stamp on things,” noted KM line coach and offensive coordinator Kevin Cruise. “They have several good athletes.”

This week, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) released the first National Participation Survey in three years. The survey was suspended for two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic on high school athletic and activities programs across the country.Thedata released saw a 4% drop in participation nationally from the 201819 survey to the data in the

Kings Mountain High’s volleyball team continued its Big South 3A Conference unbeaten string last week with 3-0 wins over South Point and Forestview. The Lady Mountaineers will have their biggest test Thursday when they travel to Cleveland County rival Crest and they will stay on the road next Tuesday at Gastonia Ashbrook.

The Lady Mountaineers defeated Forestview 25-13, 29-27 and 25-15 last Tuesday. Meile Songaila was strong along the nets with 24 kills and also provided eight service points and 11 serve receptions.Camden Pasour dished out 20 assists to go with four service points, one kill and seven digs.

Paige Bagwell had 14 assists, seven service points and threeMyraclekills. Davis provided 13 kills and three blocks.

How to protect your verified social media account

Social media has long been a favorite haunt of scammers. In this new phishing scam, con artists are going after businesses and individuals with verified accounts - a measure that was supposed to help prevent scams!

The Better Business Bureau explains how the scam works: You receive a direct message or email that appears to come directly from Twitter, Instagram, or another social media platform. It states that your verified account has been flagged, and you'll need to re-verify it. You could allegedly lose your verified account badge if you don’t respond. For example, some Twitter users have reported receiving direct messages or emails stating that their blue verified

badge has been marked as spam and, if they don't appeal the decision, it will be deleted.Thescam message asks you to click on a link or download a form to start the appeal process and re-verify your account. If you click, you may download malware onto your laptop or mobile device. This can collect your personal data without your knowledge. Q: Who is eligible for the new bivalent boosters?

A: The CDC greenlighted the upgraded Pfizer/BioNTech shots for Americans 12 and older and the Moderna booster for those 18 and over, if they have received a primary vaccine series or a booster at least 2 months before.

The boosters have been redesigned to protect against the predominant BA.4 and BA.5 strains of the virus. The Biden administration is making 160 million of the booster shots available free of charge through pharmacies, doctor’s offices, clinics, and state health departments.Q:What about children under 12?

A: The new boosters are not approved for children under 12. Additional testing and trials need to be conducted for safety and effectiveness. But officials recommend that children 5 and above receive the primary vaccine series and be boosted with one shot. Children 6 months to

under 5 years are not yet eligible for Pfizerboosters.saidit hopes to ask the FDA for authorization in 5- to 11-year-olds in October.

Q: How do the new bivalent boosters differ from previous shots?A: The new shots use the same mRNA technology as the prior Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines and boosters but have been upgraded to target the newer Omicron strains. The shots use mRNA created in a lab to teach our cells to produce a specific protein that triggers an immune-system response and make antibodies that help protect us from of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causesTheCOVID.recipe for the new shots incorporates the socalled “spike protein” of both the original (ancestral) strain of the virus and more highly transmissible Omicron strains (BA.4, BA.5). Once your body produces these proteins, your immune system kicks into gear to mount a response.

It’s also possible – but yet to be determined – that the new bivalent boosters will offer protection against newer but less common strains known as BA.4.6 and BA.2.75.

Q: Do I need one of the new shots if I’ve already had past boosters or had COVID?

Yes. Even if you’ve been infected with COVID in the past year and/or received the prior series of primary vaccines and boosters, you should get a bivalent Omicron shot.

Doing so will give you broader immunity against COVID and help limit the emergence of other variants. The more Americans with high immunity, the better; it makes it less likely other variants will emerge that can escape the immunity provided by vaccines and COVID infections.

Q: How long should I wait, from the time of my last shot, before getting a new booster?

A: The bivalent boosters are most effective when given after a period has passed between your last shot and the new one. A 2-to-3-month waiting period is the minimum, but some evidence suggests extending it out to 4 to 6 months might be good timing.To determine when you should get a new booster, check out the CDC’s Stay Up to Date with COVID-19 Vaccines Including Boosters website.

Q: What if I’ve recently had COVID?A:There are no specific rules about a waiting period after COVID infection. But if you have been infected with the virus in the last 8 weeks, you

may want to wait for 8 weeks to pass before receiving the bivalent booster to allow your immune system to get greater benefit from the shot.

Q: If I never got the original vaccines, do I need to get those shots

A:first?Yes. The bivalent vaccine has a lower dose of mRNA than the vaccines used in the primary series of vaccines, rolled out in late 2020. The bivalent vaccine is authorized for use as a booster dose and not a primary vaccine series dose.

Q: Do the Omicron-specific boosters entirely replace the otherA:boosters?Yes.The new booster shots, which target the original strain and the Omicron subvariants, are now the only available boosters for people ages 12 and older. The FDA no longer authorizes the previous booster doses for people in the approved age groups.

Q: What if I received a non-mRNA vaccine produced by Novavax or Johnson & Johnson? Should I still get an mRNA booster?

A: You can mix and match COVID vaccines, and you are eligible to get the bivalent booster 8 weeks after completing the primary COVID vaccination series – whether that was two doses of mRNA or Novavax, or one shot of J&J.

Dear Savvy Senior, What kind of changes can Medicare beneficiaries expect to see in the Inflation Reduction Act that was recently signed into law? I’m enrolled in original Medicare and have a Part D prescription drug plan but spent more than $6,000 out-of-pocket last year on medications alone.

Dear Paul, The climate, tax and health care bill known as the Inflation Reduction Act that was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden last month includes signifi cant improvements to the Medicare program that will kick-in over the next few years.

These changes will lower prescription drug prices for millions of seniors by allowing the government to negotiate drug prices for the first time and capping seniors’ out-of-pocket drug costs at $2,000 annually. Some other popular changes will include free vaccinations, lower insulin costs and expanded subsidies for lower income seniors.

Here is a breakdown of the changes to ex-

pect in Medicare and when they will roll out.

2023: Starting this January, all vaccines covered under Medicare Part D, including the shingles vaccine, will be free to beneficiaries. And the skyrocketing cost of insulin will be capped at $35 per month. This will be a significant saving for the more than 3 million Medicare enrollees who currently use insulin to control their diabetes.

Also starting next year, drug makers will be penalized in the form of “rebates” that they would be forced to pay to the government if they impose price increases that exceed general inflation.

2024: Cost sharing for catastrophic coverage in Part D will be eliminated. Under the current Part D benefit, once your out-ofpocket costs reach $7,050 in 2022, you enter “catastrophic” coverage but are still responsible for 5 percent of your prescription drug costs, with no limit.

But in 2024, people with Part D coverage will no longer be responsible for any outof-pocket drug costs once they enter cat-

astrophic coverage. This is significant for seniors who use expensive medications for conditions like cancer or multiple sclerosis.

Also starting in 2024 through 2029, Part D premiums will not be allowed to grow faster than 6 percent per year.

And for lower income Medicare beneficiaries, eligibility for the Part D Low Income Subsidy (also known as Extra Help) will be expanded to 150 percent of the federal poverty level, from today’s limit of 135 percent. This change will mean about 500,000 more seniors will qualify for financial assistance to help pay some or all of their prescription drug premiums and deductibles.

2025: One of the biggest cost reduction measures for Medicare beneficiaries will begin in 2025 when out-of-pocket spending on Part D prescription drugs will be capped at $2,000 per year. This will be a major savings for the more than 1.5 million beneficiaries who currently spend more than $2,000 outof-pocket each year.

2026: When Medicare’s Part D program

was enacted in 2003, negotiating lower drug prices was forbidden. But because of the Inflation Reduction Act, starting in 2026 Medicare will be empowered to begin negotiating prices with drug companies for 10 of the most expensive drugs covered under Part D. In 2027 and 2028, 15 drugs would be eligible for negotiations and in 2029 and subsequent years, 20 drugs would be chosen.

And, in addition to all the Medicare improvements, the Inflation Reduction Act also extends the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) premium subsidies for three years that have helped millions of Americans gain coverage before they’re eligible for Medicare.
