Big Red’s Café opened a second location inside the new Goodwill in Shelby at 1005 E Dixon Blvd. It makes sense, considering that the café is a Christian-based business. Michael and Nakisha Wenzel took ownership of Big Red’s Café in Kings Mountain almost two years ago and their business has thrived despite COVID. The time was right to expand.Management of the Shelby Goodwill reached out to the Wenzels, asking if they would consider opening a café inside their store. To make their decision, the couple drove to Rockingham where a similar concept is being tested. After talking with those owners, the Wenzels decided to move ahead with the project. The challenge, they only had one week to pull the shop together… and they finished in time for the grand opening. The second location of Red’s Café currently offers smoothies, coffee, tea, pastry, grab & go items, chicken salad, wraps, and fruits. As soon as possible, they plan to add soups, sandwiches, and salads. Nakisha is excited for a unique feature in the new See BIG RED’S, Page 5A

Luckily, cameras have been in existence since before the Civil War and many things have been photographed and filmed in Kings Mountain. I enjoy looking at old photos and film because pictures really are worth a thousand words. A source of many photos of our early residents is DigiatlNC.org. When you reach their website, just click on Images and you will see 918 listed for your viewing enjoyment. There you will find many older photos, even one of Patterson Grocery Company taken in 1880 that occupied the same building where 133 West is now. Out front a constable stands with locals. In the window is a sign for Southern Vaudeville. In the doorway hangs bunches of bananas. That photo is 142 years old! You can also search these photos by year. A lot of images are from the 1974 centennial. But many are just images from everyday folks, like the Carpenter family or other photos of early families. These images were provided by the KM Historical Museum and Mauney Memorial LibraryAndprimarily.thereare other things to be found in the archive, including maps. You can sort by year and look at older mills, schools, and events that are only memories now. Those of us who have been around a while will get a nice little walk down memory lane. If you go back to the DigitalNC.org homepage, you can also search for “H. Lee Waters Kings Mountain” to find two films shot between 1938 and 1942. Together, both films last about an hour. And if you have a Smart TV, you can watch them on your television. The films shot between 1937 – 1940 show a prosperous community. Of course, the crowd might have just come out because they heard H. Lee Waters would be in town. That is hard to know definitively. The film taken in 1942 shows primarily schools and clubs. A good portion shows Kings Mountain High School Band marching on the field behind Central School. If you have a film of the traveling circus that once came to Shu Carlton Stadium, let the museum or library digitize it. If you have photos of the parade during the 1960s that featured TANKS on Battleground Avenue, offer to have them digitized. One day, those photos and memories will be gone. today. One of the collections most used by me at DigitalNC.org is their Newspaper archive. Yes, the Herald is included in their vast catalogue. The earliest year they have is 1914, but there is a huge gap between 1920 and 1934. Thankfully, many years are included and provide a great research tool for history buffs like me. The wonderful thing about DigitalNC.org is that it covers communities all of NC. So, if you were raised somewhere else in the state, odds are the local paper for that community is also included. A film was shot in Cramerton. In it, I found images of four of the seven family members I had who lived there. Those images are priceless to me.

you to go to school, President Biden has shown that you were a bigDon’tdummy.knock yourself out. Just sit back and the government will throw you some crumbs to take care of you. In a move that Biden had promised during his campaign, he erased between $10,000 to $20,000 of debt from millions of Americans college spending spree extravaganza. Years ago, Americans started learning to spend money like it was water. Maybe they thought, “I won’t have to pay it back.” Their dream has come true. You and I along with the rest of America’s tax payers will get to pay at least a half trillion dollars of this debt. This is just what you had been hoping for! More taxes! Oh wait, just those rich people in America will have to pay this off, right? Wrong! Every American, on some level, will share in this new financial burden.Universities are legally raping America’s families because we sign up and agree to pay the tuition. We do it to ourselves. Universities don’t put a gun to the heads of Americans and make us pay. Americans foolishly agree to this debt. Yet, most universities are the last sector in America to feel the pain of the economy. In 20202021, most of them received millions of free government paycheck protection program money. This is more government money (read “debt”) that will be eaten by you – the taxpayer. Millions of American businesses also received tens of thousands to millions of dollars of free PPP money in the last two years that will also slam all Americans in moreSometaxes.tenured professors are making over $200,000 a year. Many university presidents across the country are making over $1,000,000 a year, plus major perks. Many university coaches make a million or more a year. Universities spend money like it is water. They are the ones who need to be lending and collecting or forgiving some of this debt, notYouyou.probably already paid once. Now we get to pay more for the students and the universities who just kept spending money. Why are you to be held responsible for the foolish people who borrow $50,000 to $100,000 and more? I believe in helping people, but Biden needs to pass some of this lending and collecting burden to the universities. You, the taxpayer, keep giving the money. The universities want $30,000 to $50,000 a year and more. American families foolishly swallow the poison. Next, their financial insanity becomes everybody’s problem. Does this seem right to you? Sadly, millions of Americans rack up college debt and never complete their degrees. Millions more get degrees they never use. You don’t need a college degree for a lot of jobs. Most jobs do require training that can be accomplished in far less time and Congratulationsmoney. if your debt is $10,000 to $20,000 lighter, but your debt will still have to be paid, by your friends, family, neighbors, and others.Consider spending the first two years in a community college or trade school. You can move on to the big-name school for your junior and senior years. The first two years are generally electives and classes you don’t enjoy that much anyway. You’ll save a lot of money and maybe grow up some before you land in a dorm room 200 miles away from home.

com/duffusmatthewBethE.Coiner is a modern dancer turned jeweler. She approaches each design much like a piece of choreography, drawing from the inherent movement found in natural and architectural landscapes. Her tiny sculpture designs are textured and intimate, creating wearable urban and rural vistas. She finds specimens in the natural world and transform them into wearable art. Her bespoke jewelry process refers back to an old style of jewelry making. It’s an intimate, tailor-made process of repurposing under-worn, or family heirloom jewelry into a re-imagined design for my clients. Each project has their own unique stories, little memories. Memories that remain after the sentimental materials have undergone their transformation into a new design. She likes to think there are similar parallels along the idea of intimacy with both her dances and jewelry for her collections and bespoke projects. When choreographing a solo or duet, instead of a large group, the dance is scaled down to focus on gestures and an unspoken narrative to tell a story. With her jewelry, the dance piece is present on a very macro scale. It reveals itself in the curvature of a tiny shell, or the repetition of shapes and textures, as well as how each piece relates to the body. In my creative process, the jewelry is the solo dancer, and the wearer is the stage. When Beth isn’t at her workbench making jewelry, she’s usually dancing. Born and raised in the suburbs of Vancouver, BC, Canada, Allegra Klett-Wilson made her way south via Seattle WA. She had been designing & crafting jewelry for over 20 years and officially established Allegra Nichole Designs in 2014 in Kings Mountain. In the fall of 2021, she moved her studio and home to Union Grove, N.C. where she is surrounded by 6 acres of woods. The area is rich in culture, history, and is so peaceful and inspiring. Allegra’s work embodies a unique and eclectic collection of jewelry combining silversmithing with natural stones. Self-taught and not liking to follow the rules, she creates intuitively, letting her materials do the talking. Having previously received a Regional Artists Project Grant, Allegra purchased a hydraulic press that changed how she creates her designs. She discovered the long-lost art of Die Struck Jewelry and is now able to create timeless and modern heirlooms to be passed on for generations. Her designs combine natural gemstones, pearls, Czech glass, and die struck impressions in sterlingDougsilver.Knotts has been making pottery since 1972. When he was a sophomore in college, his major was English. “I decided to switch to an Art major after a couple of ceramic courses,” he said. After graduation, Knotts worked as a park potter in Alabama. It was production, but he was able to teach children that came through the park. He then worked at Toe River Arts Council in Mitchell County NC and after that he joined the NC Visiting Artist Association. He was placed at a Community College and worked at different schools in that area teaching and producing. Eventually he became known for his bird pots. He got the idea of birds from his grandfather. “He worked at a hospital, and he would carve birds out of wood and give them to the sick children in the hospital. I make bird pots because of those experiences; also, to continue to sell pots I needed something different.” Today, he is Associate Professor of Art at Gardner-Webb University. Studio Woodcarver and Sculptor since 1994, David Caldwell’s experience includes carving for the Shelby Carousel restoration, Cornel Zimmer Organ Builders, and Bob Trotman Studios. His work can be seen in churches from New York to San Francisco. He is a three-time recipient of the NC Regional Artist Grant.

Mainly self-taught, she has also attended numerous workshops around the country. In 2018, the Encaustic Museum of Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, added her art to their Permanent Collection. Regina was a featured artist at the Propeller Art Gallery in Toronto during the International Layers of Meaning Encaustic Exhibition and received an award in the Annual Visual Harvest Exhibition with the Gaston Art Guild in the Rauch Gallery at Gaston College. THANKS!Maybe the above info clues you in to why the topic of this article, as noted by the title, has flooded my mind. Romans 3:23 tells us that we have all sinned and Romans 6:23 shares that the penalty for our sin is death - not just physical, but eternal separation from God. That means we all need a Savior. The Good News is that “God

And Jesus loved me and you and the world, past, present, and future and the Father that He willing laid down His life for us. AWESOME! (That’s a substitute for WOW!)Ohyes. The operative word in the last paragraph is “receive”. Have you repented (turned away from your sinfulness) and received God’s gift of salvation? It’s a limited time offer. Since we have no promise of tomorrow, I’d take care of this right now if I were you. Believe me, you’ll be glad you did. And then you too will say, “WOW!” Can’t remember if it was from my grandfather or my father that I first heard this story, but I always liked it. It seems that a guy who hadn’t played his trumpet lastdraftedhighschoolsincewasattheminutetofill in for a trumpeter in the community marching band for the 4th of July parade. He had protested in vain and was doing the best he could, but missing about as many notes as he was hitting, when a young lad on the sidelines hollered, “Hey mister, what kind of a tooter are you?” The man lowered his horn just long enough to reply, “Sonny, I ain’t no tooter at all. I’m a substi-tooter.” So I guess that describes me for the next few weeks. I used to contribute to this column when I pastored 2nd Baptist on Linwood and I shared a few columns as a “foreign correspondent” after retiring to Aruba to pastor Good News Baptist Church in Orangestad. But for the last five years, my wife and I have lived in Hudson, FL and are involved in the ministry of FBC, Hudson. So I am honored that the KM Ministers Association tracked me down and offered me this opportunity.

so loved the world (that includes you and me) that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever, (that includes you and me potentially) believeth in Him should not perish (receive our just penalty), but have everlasting life. (John 3;16) In other words, Jesus, the second person of the Triniity, God in the flesh (John 1:14) became the substitute to receive God’s wrath upon my sin and your sin in our place. WOW! Let that sink in for a few minutes. Jesus stepped out of heaven and chose to lay aside His Godly position to walk as you and I walk on earth, facing all the temptations you and I face in principal and yet without sin (Hebrews 4:14) so that being blameless of any sin of His own, He qualified to act as our substitute and die in our place, taking our punishment of death upon Himself then be buried and raised again on the 3rd day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) in victory over sin and the grave to provide God’s free gift of faith to trust His grace (Ephesians 2:89) for our salvation. Again, WOW!Ilike to receive gifts and this one takes the cake. WOW! God loved this sinner so much that He allowed, no, actually required His own Son to be my substitute (and yours if you will receive it) providing my ticket to heaven through the forgiveness of my sin debt and His presence and guidance for daily living so that He can bless me while I live on earth.

Join Broad River Genealogy Society on Sunday, September 11 at 3 p.m., for a presentation by Dr. Ashley Oliphant and her mother Beth Yarbrough about their book, Jean Laffite Revealed. The mother-daughter team will dive into their research on the Pirate Jean Laffite connection to Lorenzo Ferrer in Lincolnton, NC. Might they be the same man?One of America's Longest-Running Mysteries takes a fresh look at the various myths and legends surrounding one of the last great pirates. Beginning in 1805, the book traces Laffite through his rise to power as a privateer and smuggler in the Gulf, his involvement in the Battle of New Orleans, his flight to Texas, and his eventual disappearance in the waters of the Caribbean. With stunning revelations, this book picks up the trail of his complicated life. They also give us a history lesson about the times and places surrounding the unfolding drama.Lorenzo Ferrer came to Lincolnton in 1839, and the authors believe he was the New Orleans pirate Jean Laffite. He lived in Lincolnton near the Court Square until 1875, when he died at the age of 96. Their book used primary archival documents found in seven states gathered over a 2-year period to prove that Laffite faked his death in the 1820s, hid in Cuba for a time with the help of some well-placed friends, and then re-entered the United States using the alias, Lorenzo Ferrer. He settled first in Mississippi to take advantage of the cotton boom of the 1830s, but he transitioned up to North Carolina as that economic opportunity began to fade. “We were able to prove that it was Laffite's relationship with the Lincolnton Henderson family that brought him here from Mississippi, where several of them had gone for the cotton boom,” Dr. Oliphant shared. Their book was published by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Press in 2021, and they are actively working on the sequel, as they continue to uncover more information to support their case. They also travel around the country presenting their research findings.Refreshments to follow the presentation. Broad River Genealogy Society meets at American Legion Post 82 is at 1628 S. Lafayette St. in Shelby. The meeting is open to all persons interested in local history and family lineage.

Mountaineers shutout Burns Bulldogs 27-0, idle Friday before beginning BSC play next week
Mountaineers’ Xzorion Lenair returns a kick in Friday’s game with the Burns Bulldogs at Gamble Stadium. KM’s Caleb Holland (3) turns the corner on the Burns defense in Friday’s game at Gamble Stadium.
Former Kings Mountain High School football star Kobe Paysour stood out in several Mountaineer victories during his prep days and Saturday was a big factor in another Mountaineer team – the Appalachian State Mountaineers – losing one of the highest scoring games in North Carolina collegiate football history. The redshirt freshman wide receiver helped his North Carolina Tar Heels edge Appalachian State 63-61 in PlayingBoone.inthe place of UNC All-American wide receiver Josh Downs, who was injured in Carolina’s game the week before, Paysour caught all eight passes that quarterback Drake Maye sent his way for 92 yards and a touchdown. His longest catch was for 21 yards.
Kings Mountain’s Curtis Simpson (9), Rodney Unnash (40) and Javier Currie (33) sack Burns quarterback Ben Mauney in Friday’s game at KM’s Gamble Stadium.
The Tar Heels fell behind 21-7 early but made a huge comeback and the lead changed hands numerous times the rest of the way.Paysour started his freshmen through junior seasons at KMHS and set school records with 71 receptions for 1,596 yards and 26 touchdowns. Before his senior season, Cleveland County Schools were closed because of COVID and he played his senior season at Gaffney High School and led the Indians in receptions and yardage. He returned to KMHS after Gaffney’s season ended and had the grades and credits to enter Carolina in the spring semester. He spent last football season as a redshirt.Hewas a High School All-American his sophomore year at KMHS when he caught 60 passes for 1,138 yards and 16 touchdowns. For his prep career he caught 195 passes for 3,912 yards and 51 touchdowns, including 37 passes for 534 yards and five TDs in seven games at Gaffney. He was All-Conference all four years of his high school career and was an All-American his sophomore year at KMHS.

On KM’s fourth offensive play, quarterback Lamont Littlejohn hit Thomas Fair with a 12-yard pass for a touchdown and Jaden Ellis kicked the point-after with 5:45 on theTheclock.Mountaineers would threaten again on their next possession, driving from their own five following a Burns punt to the Burns 24 but the Bulldogs’ Lamont Wilson intercepted a pass. And, they drove from their own seven to the Burns 26 late in the half but a field goal attempt missed with five seconds on the clock. Kings Mountain had back-to-back scoring drives that ate up most of the third quarter to take a 21-0 lead. Taking over on their own 44 after Caleb Holland’s kickoff return, the Mountaineers covered the 56 remaining yards in eight plays to take a 14-0 led on Holland’s 13yard run off tackle and Ellis’s PAT with 7:48 on the clock. After the ensuing kickoff, Burns put the ball in play at its own 22 and, on first down, Mauney fumbled while being sacked by Simpson. FRIDAY GAME From Page 1B KM defense forced a three and out. Taking over on their own 33, the Mountaineers covered the distance in just eight plays with the big one being a 42-yard reception by Jake Lloyd for a first down at the Burns five to set up a three-yard TD run by Richardson.Burns took over at its own 22 and found itself in another deep hole as KM’s Rodney Unnash sacked Mauney for a seven yard loss. They had to punt with 5:32 left and wouldn’t touch the ball again until just 32 seconds remained on the clock.“Ithink we won all three phases of the game,” Lloyd said. “I thought our special teams were really good and did a good job. It was a good night and our second shutout in a row and we’re really proud of that. We came out in good shape. We didn’t get anybody hurt and we should be healthy when we start conference play.” With an open date this week, Lloyd said the Mountaineers will work on “fundamentals and our passing game. We’re off to a good start but we can get much better. We’ll probably work some with new guys and try to improve overall.”

The Earl Scruggs Center announced the addition of a historically significant instrument custom built for and owned by Earl Scruggs to its exhibits. A display highlighting the Jim Faulkner-built Mark V “Ruben” banjo, prominently featured alongside Earl Scruggs Revue era memorabilia, opened to the public on Friday, August 26. The banjo is on long-term loan to the Center by instrument collectors Aaron and Darlene Carr from West Monroe, Louisiana. Luthier Jim Faulkner became well known for his replica pre-war Gibson necks and his perfected flat-head tone rings, which were used on Gibson’s top-of-the-line Mastertone model banjos in the 1960s. In 1970-1971, Faulkner custom built the Mark V “Ruben” top-tension banjo for Earl Scruggs, who played the instrument in shows with the Earl Scruggs Revue. “The Faulkner Mark V ‘Ruben’ Banjo is more than just a banjo that was owned by Earl Scruggs, it is a symbol of the mutual respect shared between two masters of their craft,” said Zach Dressel, Assistant Director for the Earl Scruggs Center. “We are extremely honored to tell this story as it provides more context to the character of our namesake while at the same time giving proper attention to a person who earned respect in the world of banjo building.” The instrument remained in the Scruggs family’s possession until 2018, when it was sold through Gruhn Guitars in Nashville. Noam Pikelny, renowned banjo player and admirer of top-tension banjos, owned the instrument for some time. The banjo is currently owned by Aaron and Darlene Carr, who have generously provided it for display at the Earl Scruggs Center. “Earl was starting a new era of music with his sons when Faulkner built this banjo for him and he took it with him into that new era,” said Aaron Carr. “When we visited the Earl Scruggs Center, we were impressed and felt like the banjo belonged there. We are proud to have this unique instrument displayed for others to enjoy.”Earl’s personal mark appears in several ways on the instrument. He engraved his name on various parts of the banjo and evidence of wear is visible. In addition, the display includes the original instrument case and ancillary objects used by Earl. “The personal touches all over this instrument make it even more impressive and special,” said Darlene Carr. “The use of the instrument is obvious from the wear on the back of the resonator. This wasn’t just one of many banjos that Earl owned, it was one that he played.”Visitors can see the Faulkner Mark V “Ruben” banjo in the Turning Road Gallery, which explores Earl’s expanding musical tastes after Flatt & Scruggs parted ways and his influence on music and the world. The Earl Scruggs Center, located in Shelby, NC, is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 4 pm, with extended hours until 6 pm on Wednesdays. Learn more about the Earl Scruggs Center by visiting www.earlscruggscenter. org.

For extra peace of mind, your mom can purchase Snug’s premium plan ($10/ month) where in addition to notifying her emergency contacts, Snug will request an in-person wellness check by a police officer who will visit her house to confirm she’s OK and provide assistance as needed. The app works with iPhone and Android smartphones.
Technology devices: You may also want to invest in some simple technology aids to keep your mom safe. One of the most commonly used devices for this is a medical alert system that cost about $1 per day. These systems come with a wearable “help button” that would allow her to call for help 24/7.
Another option that’s becoming increasingly popular is smart speakers, like Amazon Alexa or Google Home. These devices work with third-party applications – AskMyBuddy.net and MySOSFamily. com – that would let your mom to call multiple emergency contacts with a simple verbal command.
Check-in app: If your mom uses a smartphone, a great solution to help ensure her safety is Snug (SnugSafe.com), a free app that would check in on her every day to confirm she’s OK. This app is used by thousands of elderly seniors who live alone and want to make sure that if something happens to them, their loved ones will be notified quickly so they can receive help in minutes, rather than days. Here’s how it works. After downloading the app, your mom will choose what time(s) throughout the day she’d like for Snug to check in. Snug will send a push notification at those times asking your mom to check in by tapping the big green check button on her smartphone screen. If she doesn’t check in within 10 minutes or respond after multiple pings, Snug will notify her emergency contacts and share her last known location so that she can receive fast help.

On August 24, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled the first officially licensed, limited-edition bobblehead of Bo, Gardner-Webb University’s official live mascot, who began his service on August 26th, 2021. The bobblehead is being released to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Bo becoming the mascot. The special edition bobblehead, representing Bo as a puppy, was produced by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum.Sitting on a circular red and green base bearing his name on the front and Gardner-Webb on the back, the Bo bobblehead is in a sitting position and wearing a red collar with a tag that reads BO. The bobbleheads, which will be individually numbered to 2,022, are only available through the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum’s Online Store. The bobbleheads, which are scheduled to ship by August 31st, cost $30 each plus a flat-rate shipping charge of $8 per order. Bo, who celebrated his first birthday on May 4th, is an English Bulldog who came from a breeder in Garner, North Carolina. He officially started his duties as an ambassador on August 26th, 2021, and like his predecessors, he has been busy representing Gardner-Webb on campus and in the community. He can be seen connecting with alumni and supporting the Runnin’ Bulldogs at home athletic and other community and outreach events. “I suppose you know your mascot has truly made the big time when it shows up as a limited-edition bobblehead!” observed Gardner-Webb President William Downs. “We hope our fans and alumni act fast to secure their own keepsake celebrating our beloved Bo.” The first recorded usage of the bulldog as a mascot for Gardner-Webb was in 1922. Throughout the years, the bulldog has been represented in numerous forms. Live bulldogs, costumed mascots and athletic branded logos have all been featured in some fashion for GWU. =Bo is the university’s seventh live mascot, dating back to Butch I, who served from 1944 to 1953. Butch II and Chins followed before there were no live mascots for over four decades. The live mascot program returned with Barney from 2010 to 2014 before he was replaced by Roebuck. “Bucky” was designated with Mascot Emeritus status.“We’re excited to create this bobblehead of Bo, the busiest bulldog in North Carolina,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “Gardner-Webb is in good paws with Bo representing the university and we think alumni, students, faculty, staff, and other members of the Gardner-Webb com-

Worrywart Daughter Dear Worrywart, There are actually several different types of check-in services, along with some simple technology devices that can help keep your mom safe at home while providing you some peace of mind. Here are some top options to look into.
Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend any services that check in on elderly seniors who live alone? I live about 200 miles from my 82-year-old mother and worry about her falling or getting ill and not being able to call for help.

Check-in calls: If your mom doesn’t use a smartphone, another option to help ensure her safety is a daily check-in call service program. These are telephone reassurance programs usually run by police or sheriff’s departments in hundreds of counties across the country and are usually provided free of charge. Here’s how they work. A computer automated phone system would call your mom at a designated time each day to check in. If she answers, the system will assume everything is OK. But if she didn’t pick up or if the call goes to voice mail after repeated tries, you (or whoever her designee is) would get a notification call. If you are not reachable, calls are then made to backup people who’ve also agreed to check on your mom if Thenecessary.fallback is if no one can be reached, the police or other emergency services personnel will be dispatched to her Tohome.find out if this service is available in your mom’s community, call her local police department’s nonemergency number. You should also check with the Area Agency on Aging in your mom’s area – call 800-677-1116 for contact inIf,formation.however, her community doesn’t have a call check-in program, there are businesses like CARE (Call-Reassurance. com) and IAmFine (Iamfine.com) that offer similar services for under $15 per month.
