More than ‘mush - NC Liver Mush Festival coming to Shelby
By Alan Hodge
One of the world’s great culinary delicacies, liver mush, will be the center of attention Saturday, October 19 from 9am to 4pm in Uptown Shelby when the 39th annual North Carolina Liver Mush Festival (AKA Mush, Music & Mutts Festival) takes place.
fun. The NC Liver Mush Festival: Mush, Music & Mutts is a free festival presented annually by VISIT Cleveland County, a division of Cleveland County Government.
Some folks may not know just exactly what liver mush is, so here’s a quick education on the stuff. Liver mush is a blend of ground scrap pork meat and liver, with a generous dash of spices, all held together with cooked cornmeal mush to make it slice-
People generally eat it for breakfast alongside eggs, or in a sandwich or biscuit. It is sold in brickshaped blocks that are cut into slices that are then fried. Some folks even eat it raw.
Food historians trace its origins to German immigrants who ate something called pon hoss, which was pork scraps blended with buckwheat and spices, and then brought it to America during the 1700s. The food ultimately came south to the NC Mountains and Piedmont, where it was often made on farms.

Liver mush also enjoyed popularity during the Great Depression because it was an affordable substitute for more expensive cuts of meat. These days, the five commercial liver mush producers — Corriher’s, Hunter’s, Jenkins, Mack’s, and Neese’s — are all based in our state’s western counties. Representatives and food from Mack’s Liver Mush and Frank Corriher’s Liver Mush presented by Shelby Rotary Club as vice projects will be on hand at the event.
Emily Epley with VISIT Cleveland County talked about the festival.
“The NC Liver Mush Festival: Mush, Music & Mutts provides much more than just liver mush!” she said. “People can enjoy live music, kids activities, the RollOver Pet Zone, over 100 vendors, and more. With an estimated 2023 attendance of 12,000 with year over year growth, we are proud to bring the festival back better than ever in October 2024. The festival was started by Mack’s

How to get through hurricanes and power outages
Hurricanes are powerful storms that can rip through areas and leave substantial damage and devastation in their wake. Hurricanes produce very strong winds that can cause power outages by knocking down electrical poles or even individual lines running to homes and businesses. Power outages can disrupt communications, water supplies and transportation, and many an individual has lost a refrigerator full of food when the power goes out for an extended period of time. Anyone living in an area that could be affected by a hurricane should include measures to get through power outages in their prepa-
ration efforts. Ready.gov and FEMA recommend these strategies.
• Ensure you have batteries and alternative power sources on hand to tide you over until the power can be restored. Cell phones can be charged using USB ports in vehicles. Some devices may work with solar chargers or power sources designed for camping and outdoor use. A backwwone to hurricanes.
• Disconnect power strips and unplug appliances to avoid damage from electrical surges.
• Stock up on ice to use in refrigerators and freezers to help prevent food spoilage. Well-insulated coolers can

Information for WIC program participants impacted by the storm
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services issued important information for people enrolled in the Special Supplement Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) impacted by Hurricane Helene.
With the widespread damage and devastation following Hurricane Helene, many Special Supplemental Nutrition Program participants for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) are affected and uprooted. More than 250,000 people are participating in the WIC program statewide. WIC provides access to healthy food, breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and health care and community services referrals.
Families participating in WIC who may have relocated to a new area can go to any N.C. WIC agency to receive a new WIC card or to request replacement of breastfeeding supplies, breast pumps, and food purchased under their current WIC benefits lost during Hurricane Helene. A directory of local WIC agency clinics is available online at https://www. ncdhhs.gov/localWIC. A list of WIC agency closures related to Hurricane Helene can be found at https://www.ncdhhs.gov/ ncwic under the “Special Weather Announcement” heading.
If your WIC card is lost, stolen, or damaged, call eWIC Customer Service at 1-844-230-0813. WIC cards will be replaced by regular mail. You should receive your replacement card in five to seven days or visit any local WIC clinic
to have your WIC card replaced.
To check your WIC benefit balance, purchase History, and account Information, call eWIC Customer Service toll-free 24/7 at 1-844-230-0813, check your account at https:// www.ebtEDGE.com, or use the FIS ebtEDGE App.
If your family was participating in WIC outside of N.C. and has relocated to North Carolina due to Hurricane Helene, you may transfer your WIC benefits from another state to your new N.C. location. Visit any N.C. WIC agency to transfer your benefits through a verification of certification. Visit https://www.ebtEDGE.com or access the ebtEDGE App to set, change, or unlock your PIN, view transaction history, view future benefits, order a replacement card, recover your password or username, or find a nearby store location where you may use your WIC benefits.
The North Carolina WIC Program is available statewide through local health departments, community and rural health centers, and community action agencies that provide WIC Program services. To apply for the WIC program, participants must meet eligibility requirements and visit with a nutritionist or other health professional. If you have any questions, contact your local WIC clinic or visit our website at https://www.ncdhhs.gov/ ncwic/eWIC.

One of the benefits of hunting is getting to see so many different animals and other things that one just doesn’t get to see otherwise. I have renamed one of my trail cameras, the zoo camera, because it always has pictures of so many different kinds of animals. On that one camera, within the last two months, I have pictures of deer, coyotes, bobcats, turkeys, raccoons, squirrels, and a bear. Not to mention the various birds. And not only do you get to see various creatures, but sometimes it’s the oddities that are the most fun. It’s when you see a piebald deer or an albino coyote. I look forward to seeing what shows up next, every time I check that camera. But these things are even more fun to see while I’m actually hunting. These are the real memories.
The other day I read about a hunter who had one of these experiences. His was very odd. It was once-in-a-lifetime odd. He shot a deer with two heads. Well, not with two attached heads. One had come from another deer. The deer this guy shot had evidently been in a previous fight with another deer and had killed the other deer but was unable to untangle his antlers. So, somehow, as the one deer decomposed, the buck that won the fight was able to decapitate its foe. But since that time had to walk around with a dead, smelly, heavy, cumbersome, remembrance of a victorious fight, that was not worth the price paid. The comparison, for me, was too blaring.
When I saw the picture of the guy’s trophy and the attached carcass, I thought about how much of the things people fight for are just not worth the hauls of a victory. While we may carry around the evidence of a win, it may also come with the stench of other spoils that may never go away. I wonder how many of us can remember a victory where the prize was not worth the win? And now the trophy is a burden of a painful memory. My friend, winning a battle, or an argument, over something that doesn’t really matter may bring immediate satisfaction, but don’t forget, it could also be the very thing that brings about your own demise. The slow death of personal regret and its burdens is sometimes worse than the immediate pride that comes from destroying another.

They want everyone to recognize that something given to them is rightfully theirs. This instinct for ownership is a fundamental aspect of human nature. As adults, we echo similar sentiments, declaring “my life,” “my body,” and “my money.”
However, as followers of Christ, we are called to embrace stewardship rather than ownership. This represents a paradigm shift in our thinking. When we view possessions or even our very lives as “ours,” we can become selfish or resistant to do what God is leading us to do. However, when we proclaim Him as Savior and Lord, we willingly surrender to His love, guidance, and instructions, accepting Him as the master of our lives. This surrender stems from our understanding that He is our Creator and loving Father. Acts 17:28 (AMP) says, “For in Him we live and move and exist [that is, in Him we actu-
A Grateful King King David understood this concept of stewardship. Although David was very wealthy, a great warrior, and a mighty king, he still had humility toward the Creator of the universe and gave all the credit for his success to him. He prays in I Chronicles 29:11-14 (NLT), “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O LORD, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion, people are made great and given strength. “O our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name! But who am I, and who are my people, that we could give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us!”
“Dear God I praise you for being Lord of all. The earth is yours and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to you. Thank you for the many blessings you have given me. Every good and perfect gift comes from you. Forgive me for self-centeredness instead of Christ-centeredness. Please lead and guide me so that I will be a wise and faithful manager of what You have entrusted to me. I pray that my life brings glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.
