Bands Unite for Hurricane Relief at GWU To Support Disaster Recovery

The event will raise funds and collect donations for disaster relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
Three musical acts will share their talents- The Local Boys, Howltree, and Mason Coleand offer the community an opportunity to come together in support of those impacted by the storm in western North Carolina.

the region. Tickets will be available at the gate on the day of the event.
Hurricane Helene, which struck western North Carolina last month, left a path of destruction that included widespread flooding, power outages, and significant damage to homes and businesses. Several counties have been declared disaster areas, and recovery efforts are still ongoing. Thousands of families are facing challenges as they work to rebuild their lives after the devastation.
Relief organizations, including N.C. Baptist on Mission, have been on the ground providing essential services to affected communities. From distributing food and supplies to offering cleanup and rebuilding assistance, their efforts are vital to the recovery process. By supporting this concert, attendees can directly contribute to these continuing missions and help bring hope and healing to those in need.
The concert will showcase three talented acts, each with deep roots in North Carolina, and known
The Local Boys are a well-loved bluegrass band, bringing high-energy performances and a blend of traditional bluegrass with modern influences. The band is known for their skilled instrumentals and lively shows that engage audiences of all ages.
for their unique styles of music.
In the spirit of compassion and service, this event provides a platform for the Gardner-Webb community and local residents to extend a hand to their neighbors in need. The concert is a reminder of the power of coming together in times of crisis and offers a meaningful way for individuals to contribute to the rebuilding efforts in western North Carolina.
All proceeds and donations go directly to N.C. Baptist on Mission. Those unable to attend, and would still like to make a monetary donation, you can do so at baptistsonmission.org/Donate.

One of my least favorite things to see when bow hunting is a bunch of doe that comes in within fifty yards of my stand. I know that eventually I’m going to get busted. If I’m looking to take a doe, I might get a shot off. But no matter what, if they stay there long enough, I’m going to be discovered. It doesn’t matter if I’m wearing a deer hide underneath the best camo, while elevated thirty feet in the air, that one lone momma deer is going to sniff me out and let every other deer in three counties know I’m there. I don’t know how they do it, but they do. A five-year-old doe is impossible to hide from. She may not see you, but she’ll know you are there. I can remember one afternoon hunting with my muzzleloader. I was in a hunting house over a hundred yards from where several deer had come out to eat beans. Everything was fine, I thought. Most of them were feeding and there was one good buck that I had decided to shoot. I saw this doe easing away from the herd and to my right. But she was still over fifty yards away. I paid no attention to her as I stuck my gun out the window to get a careful aim at my potential buck. After getting comfortable with my shot, I preceded to squeeze the trigger. But nearly the exact time I pulled, she let out a field-clearing blow that caused my target to jump like he had stepped on a Black Mamba. And not only did the buck jump, but I nearly hit my head on the roof of my blind. Perfect timing for everyone but me. I was busted by a doe with some kind of extraterrestrial sixth sense. If I had just been more aware of her, maybe I would have done something different. I do know this; however. I should have paid more attention to what was going on around me before I acted on what was going on in front of me. That’s actually great advice for everything I do. I need to pay attention to what is going on around me before I act on what is going on in front of me. This reminds me how my decisions affect others. It reminds me of my responsibility for my influence. It reminds me that as a follower of Christ, I am to put others first because that’s what Jesus did and called me to do. And it reminds me that when I pay attention to what’s going on around me, I more fully understand the cost of my actions. And they all have a cost. Sometimes it’s losing a trophy buck, and sometimes it’s losing a trophy far greater.

Golden Girls celebrate Silver Anniversary
with a Gold Medal
Friday, October 11, 2024.
Born in Cleveland County, on July 7, 1956, Tim was a son of the late Hal and Dorothy Eaker Hendrick.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Joe Costner and brother-in-law, Rev. Danny Benfield.
Since 1983, Cleveland County has been part of a special annual event for senior citizens - “The North Carolina Senior Games”. Cleveland County is just one of 52 districts throughout North Carolina that has a charter to host the event. Once qualified from the county games, participants can advance to the State Senior Games. From there, state qualifiers advance to the highest honor participants can reach: the National Senior Games.
In 1999, the North Carolina Senior Games added “Women’s Slow-Pitch Softball” to their schedule of activities. Sherrill Jenkins, a
retired school teacher, organized a team from Cleveland County. The team decided to name themselves “The Golden Girls”.
After qualifying locally, the team traveled to Raleigh to compete in the NC Senior Games State Tournament.
The “Golden Girls” was the only women’s team to compete at the state level that first year. A team of volunteers and students were recruited to play the team to qualify for a medal.
The team began competing and continued playing for several years in the 55 and older age bracket. Over the years, as the players advanced in age, the team
played several years each in the 60 and over, 65 and over, and the current 70 and over age brackets every year. The team won medals at the local and state levels, which were mostly gold.
In 2024, the “Golden Girls” was the oldest and only women’s team competing in the 70 and over age bracket at the State Tournament. The team consisted of 15 players, ranging in age from 70 to 83. In another first, the team played an 80 and over men’s team to qualify for a medal.
Although there are no active players from the first team, four current players have been playing for over 20 years.

Introducing a brandnew event to Uptown Shelby – Falling for Shelby festival. Three Uptown Shelby Business Owners created the event to showcase the restaurants and retail businesses on S. Lafayette St. in Uptown Shelby.
The business owners of Angie Brooke Boutique, Sutton and Brooks Boutique, and Minnie Jean Design Co. have partnered with Dragonfly Marketing and Events to create Falling for Shelby. These three business owners are committed to bringing the event to fruition by investing their time and financial resources. The team prioritizes bringing in vendors that do not compete with the businesses on S. Lafayette St. All vendors will be vetted before acceptance.
The event will be a vibrant celebration, offering a rich tapestry of activities. From the fashion showcases of these three boutiques to the performances of dance groups from across the county and the music of regional favorites, there’s something for everyone.
The festival will open at 2:00 p.m. and cover S. Lafayette St. from Graham to Warren with vendors, fashion shows, children’s activities, dance group presentations, and regional bands. The first band will take the stage at 5:00 p.m., and two additional bands will follow, closing the night at 10:00 p.m.
The Moffitt Family Foundation and Falling for Shelby businesses are partnering to continue supporting the small Western North Carolina communities. The Falling for Shelby Festival will be held on October 26, 2024, in Uptown Shelby on Lafayette Street. Beginning October 14, the following businesses will have half-and-half tickets to sell: Angie Brooke Boutique, Carolina Chiropractic Plus, Dragonfly Marketing and Events, Minnie Jean Design Co., and Sutton Brooks Boutique. The 50 percent not given to the winner will go to Helene Hurricane Relief. Tickets will be ten dollars each or 3 for $25.
Dirty Grass Soul will draw the winner during their performance at the festival.
Visit the Moffitt Family Foundation’s website for more information. Visit the Falling for Shelby Festival’s Facebook page for more information.
The Cleveland County Volunteer Fire Department will host a fill-the-trailer event for supplies needed in the Western North Carolina area. A list of needed supplies will be posted on the festival and CCVFD Facebook pages.
Mason Cole, a local favorite who opens the stage, is building audiences across the Southeast. Born and raised in Shelby, NC, Mason Cole writes about true events and situations that occur in everyday life. A mix of Americana and country music,
Mason’s ingenuity in songwriting continuously shocks the audience, especially being only 18. Be sure to check out Mason anywhere you listen to music online and visit his website. https://www.masoncolemusic.com/
Tyler Hatley and the Coyotes band take the stage around 6:00 pm. It is a five-piece band originating in North Carolina that has been all over the Country performing in Honky Tonks as well as Arenas with some of the most significant acts in country music, including Luke Combs, Joe Diffie, Josh Thompson, Shane Smith, and the Saints, Sunday Best and many more. With influences from 90’s country, Red Dirt Texas Country, and Appalachian folk, you will experience a great blend of original music and some of their favorite artists’ cover songs. Tyler Hatley (vocals and acoustic guitar), along with Justin Clyde Williams (vocals and electric guitar) and Matt Parks (vocals and fiddle), have taken their trio to the next level by adding bass (Clinton Andrews) and drums (Alex Sims) to create the full band The Coyotes.
The headliner for the event is a local and regional favorite, Dirty Grass Soul.
Proudly hailing from the musically rich foothills of Cleveland County (Shelby, NC), Dirty Grass Soul has been entertaining audiences across the Carolinas and beyond since their formation in 2011. With a sound that draws much influence from the traditional music of the North Carolina foothills, Dirty Grass Soul manages to bring a new, refreshed, and re-energized sound to their music that falls somewhere between country, bluegrass, and southern rock & roll reminiscent of acts like The Charlie Daniels Band and The Marshall Tucker Band. Rather than simply relying on heavy guitar leads, Dirty Grass Soul offers instrumentation that mixes in a heavy dose of fiddle, pedal steel guitar, and banjo in addition to the guitar. DGS is led by founding members Kevin Dedmon (Fiddle, Vocals, Guitar) and Lance Watson (Bass, Mandolin). They are joined by Tommy Smith (Electric Guitar), Dedmon’s brother Kris Dedmon (Banjo), Glenn Miller (Pedal Steel Guitar), and Jared Miller (Vocals & Percussion).
People can call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org for themselves or if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
After touring the Carolinas behind their self-produced albums “New Day of Work” and “The Long Way,” as well as shows with the likes of many of the nation’s premier bands under their belt, Dirty Grass Soul has earned a reputation as one of The Carolina’s emerging Southern Roc/Alt-Country bands. Follow the event on social media for the most up-to-date information. Band performance times may change. For more information, email the committee at FallingForShelby@dragonflymarketing.cc.

IS LET’S TALK MONTH! OCTOBER
Parents: It’s time to talk... about sex.
Some tips on talking with your preteen or teen about sex are:
Try to answer what’s being asked, not what you think is being asked.
If you really do sense there is a question behind the question, go ahead and carefully try to give your emotional support.
Try to be aware of your own attitudes.
Try to convey that you believe in your child and you’re more concerned about his/her quality of life and relationships with others rather than what they have done.
Use humor but don’t laugh at your kids.
Remember: Start Early and Talk Often
Don’t try to cover everything in one conversation. If you haven’t started the conversation yet, it’s never too late to start!
