Falling for Shelby - Helene Fundraiser and Fill the Trailer

Introducing a brand-new event to Uptown Shelby – Falling for Shelby festival. Three Uptown Shelby Business Owners created the event to showcase the restaurants and retail businesses on S. Lafayette St. in Uptown Shelby.

The business owners of Angie Brooke Boutique, Sutton and Brooks Boutique, and Minnie Jean Design Co. have partnered with Dragonfly Marketing and Events to create Falling for Shelby. These three business owners are committed to bringing the event to fruition by investing their time and financial resources. The team prioritizes bringing in vendors that do not compete with the businesses on S.

fashion shows, children’s activities, dance group presentations, and regional bands. The first band will take the stage at 5:00 p.m., and two additional bands will follow, closing the night at 10:00 p.m.

The Moffitt Family Foundation and Falling for Shelby businesses are partnering to continue supporting the small Western North Caro-

ern North Carolina area. A list of needed supplies will be posted on the festival and CCVFD Facebook pages.

Mason Cole, a local favorite who opens the stage, is building audiences across the Southeast. Born and raised in Shelby, NC, Mason Cole writes about true events and situations that occur in everyday life. A mix of Americana and country music, Mason’s ingenuity in songwriting continuously shocks the audience, especially being only 18. Be sure to check out Mason anywhere you listen to music online and visit his website: https://www. masoncolemusic.com/

Tyler Hatley and the Coyotes band take the stage around 6:00 pm. It is a five-piece band originating in North Carolina that has been all over the Country performing in Honky Tonks as well as Arenas with some of the most significant acts in country music, including Luke Combs, Joe Diffie, Josh Thompson, Shane Smith, and the Saints, Sunday Best and many more. With influences from 90’s country, Red Dirt Texas Country, and Appalachian folk, you will experience a great blend of original music and some of their favorite artists’ cover songs. Tyler Hatley (vocals and acoustic guitar), along with Justin Clyde Williams (vocals and electric guitar) and Matt Parks (vocals and fiddle), have taken their trio to the next level by adding bass (Clinton Andrews) and drums (Alex Sims) to create the full band The Coyotes. The headliner for the event is a local and regional favorite, Dirty Grass Soul.

Proudly hailing from the musically rich foothills of Cleveland County (Shelby, NC), Dirty Grass Soul has been entertaining audiences across the Carolinas and beyond since their formation in 2011. With a sound that draws much influence from the traditional music of the

North Carolina foothills, Dirty Grass Soul manages to bring a new, refreshed, and re-energized sound to their music that falls somewhere between country, bluegrass, and

southern rock & roll reminiscent of acts like The

From Page 1 guitar leads, Dirty Grass Soul offers instrumentation that mixes in a heavy dose of fiddle, pedal steel guitar, and banjo in addition to the guitar. DGS is led by founding members Kevin Dedmon (Fiddle, Vocals, Guitar) and Lance Watson (Bass, Mandolin). They are joined by Tommy Smith (Electric Guitar), Dedmon’s brother Kris Dedmon (Banjo), Glenn Miller (Pedal Steel Guitar), and Jared

Miller (Vocals & Percussion). After touring the Carolinas behind their self-produced albums “New Day of Work” and “The Long Way,” as well as shows with the likes of many of the nation’s premier bands under their belt, Dirty Grass Soul has earned a reputation as one of The Carolina’s emerging Southern RockAlt-Country bands. CLEVELAND COUNTY SHERIFF ALAN NORMAN OFFERS REMINDERS FOR A SAFE AND HAPPY HALLOWEEN

The Halloween holiday is quickly approaching, and many in Cleveland County are already participating in fun fall activities. Before you head out to participate in trick-or-treating, haunted houses or costume parties, keep in mind these tips from Sheriff Norman to help you and your family stay safe while you enjoy the festivities!

Most importantly, parents and guardians should check their local sex offender registry at https://sexoffender. ncsbi.gov/ prior to planning a trick-or-treating route. At this webpage you can few a map of registered sex offenders’ addresses in your area and also set up an alert that will notify you if a registered sex offender moves to your area.

Once you have determined the best route for treat-seeking, Sheriff Norman hopes you will follow these basic safety rules to keep your ghosts and goblins safe:

• When choosing a costume, pick one with bright colors or add reflective tape so children can be seen in low light.

• Make sure masks or costumes do not obstruct vision.

• Always make sure there is an adult present with younger goblins while trick-or-treating, and ensure older kids know to only visit familiar areas.

• Avoid taking homemade treats.

• Inspect all candy at home before eating. Discard any that have been previously opened or tampered with.

• Carry a flashlight with you to be able to see where you are walking at night.

• Make sure your headlights are on.

• Take an extra look at crosswalks and intersections for groups of trick-or-treaters crossing the road.

• Do not text and drive. It is against the law in North Carolina.

• Slow down!

• Do not wear costumes while driving that may obstruct your vision or make it difficult for you to react quickly behind the wheel.

If you plan to stay inside and hand out candy this Halloween, you can also help keep local trick-or-treaters safe!

• Keep your porch and driveway clear of any tripping hazards.

• Make sure your porch is well lit for trick-or-treaters.

• Only hand out unopened, pre-packaged candy and treats.

• Use battery operated candles instead of real ones in your jack-o-lanterns and other décor.

• Make sure all pets are restrained when you open your door.

• Secure any outdoor decorations properly.

139 West Ross Grove Road Shelby, NC 704-482-7986

• Only approach homes that are brightly lit.

• Never enter a stranger’s home.

Halloween is one of the deadliest days of the year for pedestrians, so if you plan to be driving around your neighborhood amongst the spooky trick-or-treaters, make sure to remain extra vigilant to prevent unnecessary accidents. When driving on Halloween, remember:

“Halloween is a great time for families and friends to celebrate the fall season, which means there may be a large number of people out and about enjoying the festivities,” noted Sheriff Norman. “It is important to take extra precautions on busy holidays like this one to help you and everyone in our community can have a safe and enjoyable time. We can work together to make sure that the scariest part about this Halloween is the spooky decorations and ghoulish costumes!”

Time: A precious gift from God

(Part 2 of the “From Ownership to Stewardship” Series)

In our fastpaced world, where schedules are jampacked and responsibilities seem to pile up, it’s easy to forget the true nature of time. However, we must remember that our time on earth is a precious gift from God. As we navigate the daily grind, it’s essential to reflect on how we use this gift and its impact on our lives and those around us. The Bible offers us profound insights into the nature of time. Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV) reminds us, “To everything, there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven.” Every moment we experience has its purpose. Whether joy, sorrow, work, or rest, God has a divine plan and timing for each aspect of our lives. Recognizing this can help us appreciate the big and small moments that shape our journey.

A Fleeting Resource Time is often seen as a fleeting resource. However, as Christians, we understand that God is sovereign over time.

Psalm 90:12 (NIV) says, “So teach us to number our days so that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Here, the psalmist encourages us to be mindful of how we spend our days. By being intentional with our time, we cultivate wisdom and draw closer to God’s purpose for our lives. In our busy lives, it’s essential to prioritize time with God. In Mark 1:35 (NIV), we see Jesus rising early to pray. “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.” If Jesus, the Son of God, set aside time for prayer and communion with the Father, how much more should we?

The Canvas

Moreover, our time on earth is an opportunity for service and love. Ephesians 5:15-16 urges us, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil.” This scripture calls us to be intentional with our time, encouraging acts of kindness and service. Every moment we invest in relationships, worship, and self-care is a vital component of a fulfilling life. By cherishing each moment as a gift from God, we can create a life filled with purpose,

love, and connection. Time is not just a measure of hours and minutes; it’s a canvas on which we paint our lives. Let’s make every stroke count!

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Father, I praise you for being the Creator of time. You are the Ancient of Days. Forgive me for focusing on my agenda instead of seeking your face to find out your plans for my life. Thank you for loving me and guiding me on this day and every day. Help me to bring glory to your name. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Benefit Concert to help Blue Ridge Community College

Cleveland Community College is hosting a benefit concert on Thursday, October 24, 2024, to support its sister institution, Blue Ridge Community College, located in Flat Rock, North Carolina. The concert is free, but we will be accepting monetary donations of any amount. Cash and electronic donations will be accepted.

“We were fortunate at Cleveland Community College to be spared serious damage,” stated CCC President Dr. Jason Hurst.

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ

“Our sister colleges to the west have suffered much more. Since we were blessed to come through the hurricane relatively unscathed, we felt it was the right thing to do to help one of our sister colleges. We've decided to ‘adopt’ Blue Ridge Community College.”

raise money that will be donated to BRCC’s Foundation to aid in their hurricane recovery efforts on campus and within the community.

Annual Event Provides Fun Activities and Trunk-or-Treat for Children

Blue Ridge Community College serves Henderson and Transylvania Counties in Western North Carolina. The BRCC campus experienced damage to buildings, fallen trees, and interruptions to power, water, and cell service. In the storm's aftermath, BRCC has acted as a staging area for multiple agencies, housed emergency responders, and continues to reach out to employees and students to offer help and support. BRCC was able to reopen last week, although repairs and cleanup efforts are still ongoing.

“When I spoke with Blue Ridge’s President, Dr. Laura Leatherwood, she was both grateful and excited to hear about our plans to assist them,” Dr. Hurst remarked. “Community colleges are at the heart of their communities, and this truth has never been more evident than it is now.”

The staff at BRCC are currently surveying students and employees to determine their needs. Once they compile a list, staff at CCC will begin collecting the requested items. In the meantime, CCC is organizing this benefit concert to

“So many agencies and individuals are already contributing to the recovery effort in the mountains,” Dr. Hurst noted. “We want to ensure our assistance is as effective as possible. For us, it made sense to focus on a sister college as they work to help their community heal.”

The benefit concert is not only a way to raise funds but also a heartfelt reminder of the power of community and solidarity in times of crisis. As Cleveland Community College rallies to support Blue Ridge Community College, it embodies the resilience and compassion that define the spirit of higher education. We invite everyone to join us in this effort, whether through attending the concert, donating, or spreading the word, as we come together to support our sister institution and help them rebuild stronger than ever.

Online donations can be made by visiting CCC’s website, Clevelandcc.edu and clicking on Events at the top of the home page. Under Events, there is a link to the Hurricane Helene Relief Effort.

An annual fall tradition returns to the Gardner-Webb campus on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. Since 2005, Octoberfest has welcomed families, providing candy, games and fun for children. This year, the event will be held inside the Paul Porter Arena and outside, around the perimeter of Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC).

Joining the GWU campus again as hosts are Ruby C. Hunt YMCA and the Town of Boiling Springs. All activities are free and open to the public. Visitors will enjoy a Trunk-or-Treat, inflatable obstacle course and 9-hole miniature golf course provided by the Ruby YMCA, and nearly 40 games and activities sponsored by GWU athletic teams and student clubs. The Town of Boiling Springs is bringing a display of rescue vehicles. Pizza will be available for the children.

“Octoberfest is a vibrant celebration that brings together students, faculty, and the local community,” affirmed Isaiah Crawford, Gardner-Webb associate minister for Community Engagement and Athletics. “This annual event highlights the spirit of unity and connection that defines our campus, offering a time to celebrate the season and strengthen the bonds between the university and the surrounding community.”

First light has always been my favorite time of day. It’s at that time my expectation is at its highest. Whether I’m fishing, hunting or just out, I love the possibilities and excitement the breaking day brings. It seems all game is more active during this period. Every cast is made with great expectations. Every corner of the woods is looked at with great expectations. The skies are filled with great expectations. It’s a feeling only you and I know. I wonder sometimes if that’s not what draws us back to the water or the woods. It seems much of our daily lives are filled with less than great expectations. Instead, they are filled with expectations of the normal or average type. We expect to go to work, put in a long day, get off, come home, and do it all again the next day. And we usually get what we expect. But when we are in the woods or on the water our mind begins to think outside the normal possibilities. I never go into a hunt with great expectations to shoot a spike. Nor do I rush to get to the lake so I can land that 12-inch largemouth. No, my mind soars beyond the average and beyond the normal to the possibilities of what may lie just beyond the corner or just under the surface. And it’s that dream that makes the experience so exciting. Some people say, “Get real.” I prefer to let my mind take me to the “what ifs.” God has put within each one of us the capacity to dream. Those dreams are our motivation. They are our great expectations. They get us up early and keep us out late. When put into action they are our contribution to the world. If you think about it, dreams have always taken us where we had never been and allowed us to do things we thought we would never do. If you have a dream, it’s a gift from God given to you, to be used for Him. To not follow that dream would be not only a shame but a sin. As you look to the days ahead, rekindle the dream you have let simmer. It might take you and others places we have never been.
