Construction company and Marine Corps League receiving applications

A construction company in Shelby is answering the call to help veterans in Rutherford County and is partnering with the Cpl. Chris S. Ebert Marine Corps League Detachment #1221 in Forest City to make this happen.

CPS Construction: Roofing, Window, Siding & Gutters, has agreed to install a new roof on the home of a veteran in need.

Chris Fisher, employee of CPS and a member of the Marine Corps League, received a vision to help a veteran with a roof when he learned of the generosity of the Marine Corps League’s passion to help veterans.

Fisher returned to his native Rutherford County two years ago to be near his senior parents, Jackie and Ray Fisher of Forest City and subsequently joined the Marine Corps League, “because I liked the things they were doing to help veterans and (their) other community projects,” said Chris, a US Army veteran.

with a free roof replacement,” he said.

“Kevin and Cole have built a strong business in Shelby over the years and have expressed a desire to give back to the community,” Chris said.

Fisher sells residential and commercial roofing and also specializes in assisting with insurance claims with CPS.

A spokesperson at CPS said they are thrilled to join Chris’ passion of providing a new roof for a veteran.

The spokesperson said Chris is like family and it was easy for the company to join in his passion to help veterans.

“This was an easy decision.”

The business is locally owned and has always been vested in the community and area in sharing ways they can help.

“If a veteran’s income is not adequate to afford a new roof and there is a need for one, the veteran can be in a dire financial situation,” Chris said.

“We are looking for applications from either veterans or an application submitted on behalf of a needy veteran stating why the veteran is in need of a roof,” Chris added.

Once all applications are received by the deadline of November 8, the Marine Corps League, CPS and Chris will begin the process of reviewing every application and will decide who most qualifies for a roof.

“I heard some of the veterans at the Marine Corps League help veterans due to them living off their disability checks and having no other income or ways of generating income,” Chris continued.

“I spoke with the (CPS) owners Kevin Nunns and Cole Thompson and expressed my desire to help a needy veteran

“We will pick a veteran from the submissions and install a new roof on their home,” said Chris.

Anyone interested in applying for the roof assistance may visit www.cpsconstruction.com/veterans, call Fisher at 704-400-4659 or Troy Stanley, 828-477-8526 Marine Corps League.

Stanley said the Marine Corps League is grateful to the company for its decision and looks forward to working together to help a veteran in need. Applications must be submitted by Nov. 8, 2024.

To continue funding The Marine Corps League’s support of local veterans, a “Veterans helping Veterans” golf tournament will be held November 8 at The Cleghorn Club.

Stanley says the Marine Corps League hopes to raise $30,000 from the tournament to help veterans and their families.

Teams are invited to join the tournament.

Contact Stanley or Bob Melnick, 828-429-0643 for more information about the golf tournament.

A Veterans Helping Veterans golf tournament will l b be held November 8 at Cleghorn Club Golf Course Money raised will be used to help veterans with n needs across the county. The tournament is also beeing held in honor of Veterans Day November 11 T The tournament is hosted by the Cpl Chris S. Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, Nov. 3

Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday, November 3, at 2 a.m. On the bright side, you will get an extra hour of sleep that day. On the downside, the sun will set one hour earlier on the clock than it had on Saturday.

While Daylight Saving Time was used in the

United States to begin WWI, it was not consistently used. President Lyndon Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act into law on April 12, 1966. It

was to begin the last Sunday of April through the last Sunday of October and operate by time zone.

States could opt out of Daylight Saving Time by creating a state law.

In 1986, the official time of 2 a.m. was designated for Daylight Saving Time's start and end time.

For those who may not be familiar with the story, Mr. Owensby brought Hollywood to the Carolinas. When he started his business, all movies were made in California. He changed all that and became very successful at producing movies. Founded in 1974, the studio and Mr. Owensby thrived and many of his employees continue to thrive in the industry to this day with other companies. A link below will give those who are unfamiliar with him more details. https://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Earl_Owensby_Studios. Proceeds from the auction will go into Clifford’s Army Rescue’s building fund to help restore the property. While the buildings may not hold studio sets, and produce movies, those same buildings can be used to make Clifford’s Army Rescue’s dreams come true to help even more animals in need along with providing other animal related services for the community. Along with items related to E.O. Studios, there will be unrelated but unique items that may interest you. There is a $5 bidding fee when you register. NC ballot referendum on amendment to ban noncitizens from voting

In the General Election, North Carolina voters will decide on a proposed amendment to the state constitution, House Bill 1074. This amendment seeks to formally ban noncitizens from voting in state and local elections. Proponents argue that the amendment will close any potential loopholes in the current constitution that might otherwise allow noncitizen voting in future local and state contests. Those opposing the

amendment contend it stems from anti-immigration sentiment and could inadvertently disenfranchise eligible voters. Notably, the measure does not impact federal elections, where federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting in presidential and congressional races.

Currently, North Carolina law is understood by the courts to bar noncitizen voting in local and state elections. Still, the amendment aims to make this restriction explicit in the state’s constitution.

Earlier this year, the bill passed through North Carolina’s legislature with substantial support, seeing a 104-12 vote in the House and a 40-4 vote in the Senate. Should voters approve the measure, the General Assembly will

need to enact additional legislation to specify any changes to the voter registration process. Similar measures are being considered in seven other states during this election cycle, including South Carolina, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. Each state already has laws barring noncitizen voting, but lawmakers aim to reinforce these rules through constitutional amendments.

A Vessel of Honor

(Part 3 of the “From Ownership to Stewardship” Series)

In today’s world, we often hear phrases like “my body, my choice” and “self-ownership,” leading us to perceive our physical selves as merely personal possessions. However, as believers, it’s crucial to understand a much deeper truth: our bodies are gifts from God and belong to Him. This understanding transforms how we view ourselves and deepens our relationship with our Creator. The Apostle Paul eloquently articulates this profound perspective in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV) He asks, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Self-Care:

An Act of Worship

When we embrace this truth—that our bodies belong to God—we shift our mindset

regarding self-care. It encourages us to cultivate a lifestyle that prioritizes health and well-being, not just for our benefit but as an act of worship. God desires us to thrive physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In Romans 12:1a (NIV), Paul calls us to “present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.” This means our commitment to self-care is not merely an indulgence; it is an act of honoring our Creator and acknowledging the gift of life He has bestowed upon us.

The Body of Christ

Furthermore, recognizing that our bodies are His deepens our sense of community and belonging within the body of Christ. As 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 tells us, just as a body has many parts, the Church is made up of diverse individuals, each with unique roles and contributions. We are not isolated beings; we are interdependent, working together for a common purpose. When we accept that our bodies are part of God’s greater plan, we become more attuned to how we can uplift and serve one another.

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Father, You formed my

innermost parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I am made in your image and after your likeness. I will give thanks and praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Forgive me for not always taking care of my health like I should. Help me to remember to glorify you in everything I eat, drink, and do in this body. May I be ever aware of your Presence and love. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you! Contact her at www.danyale. com to share a testimony, send a prayer request, or book her for speaking engagements.

“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. Revelation 22:12

We had this six-pointer on camera several times. However, he was not just any six. The sheds from last year measured 135 inches. My first evening I chose the wrong stand. He showed up at a different one. For the next few days, I hunted where he was last seen, every morning and evening. He still lives. And I really wanted him. Oh, sure I would have been happy to put an arrow through some other giant. But this guy was different. This guy had a different story. This guy made the most out of the gifts he was given. And that makes his story better than most, because that don’t happen much – with deer or people.

After seeing this year’s pictures, we estimated this deer would score in the mid to upper 140’s. Again, it was the deer I wanted. And while I still have one more opportunity, I’m not sure he (or any deer) will show up under my stand. But if I had his antlers on my wall, it would remind me how God has gifted each of us differently. For some, He has given unbelievable potential. Those individuals are the ones who win the award for “Most Likely to Succeed.” They are the ones who move like leaders and talk like entrepreneurs. They are easy to see coming. They are the 10-pointers. And then there’s the rest of us. We have our own talents and gifts. Some of us have more than one. Each of us also has abilities that may cause us to stand out from others. But we look at ourselves and know that while the possibilities are endless, our potential is not. For instance, I may be able to match wits with some intelligent people, but no matter how hard I study, I will never be able to join the Mensa club. I just don’t have that potential. But here’s what we all have. We have the ability to make our gifts go further than most others do. You see this six-pointer would never have become as desirable and valuable just being a six-pointer. But when he rose above all other six-pointers, not only did he stand out from others his size, but he also stood out from those with great potential who are satisfied to just live around other 10-pointers but never rise up above the others in his class. So, don’t fret over what God didn’t give you, but instead, take what He has given you, and do something with it that no one else does.

Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp twoedged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. – Revelation 12:1-18

Hike with a C.A.R.E. doggie at the Gateway Trail Nov. 2

Clifford Army Rescue Extravaganza (C.A.R.E.)

will hold a Hike with a Doggie event on Saturday, November 2, from 10 a.m. until noon at the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail.

The 501©3 non-profit has years of successful rescue stories to back up the fact that you should NEVER underestimate how ONE small action can make a huge difference in saving countless lives.

C.A.R.E. rescues abused, neglected, and abandoned animals from Kill Shelters, owner surrender, and general abandonment.

They operate solely on the dedication of our Volunteers and Fosters but could really use your help. Together, we can save more lives.

Generous donations from the community and businesses make providing much-needed care for these rescues possible.

The organization would love your help and support in its critical mission of saving lives and finding them safe and loving

homes.

“You cannot possibly save them all,” they were told.

“That does not mean we cannot try,” they replied.

If you are unable to attend this event, and even if you can, your donations help to cover the costs of rescuing abused, abandoned, and neglected animals.

Donations pay for medicines, medical supplies, vet care, food, beds, puppy pads, transportation, and any other needs rescue dogs may have.

By operating as volunteers, the non-profit uses every penny donated to save even more lives.

You can donate by:

• Gifting in person at one of our events

• Mail to: PO BOX 370,

• Sending directly from your PayPal to ours

Considerations for seniors looking to go back to school

The picture of a traditional college student is one in his or her late teens or early 20s. However, a deeper look may reveal that college student demographics are more diverse than one might imagine. In fact, senior citizens can rest assured that if they plan to return to the classroom, they’re likely to find students around their age.

According to the senior citizen resource Elder Guru, just over 0.3 percent of university students are over 65. Even though that is a low number in the grand scheme of things, it is an indication that seniors have a presence on college campuses. And that number is expected to rise. Universities are increasing efforts to include seniors as important parts of their student bodies. Here are some things seniors considering going back to school may want to know.

• Incentives are available. Many schools are looking to expand their elder student body populations by making it easier for them to go to school. That means seniors may be able to attend for little to no cost through tuition waivers and discounts. Speak with an admissions officer about your options.

• Lay the foundation for a new career. A survey from the Rand Corporation found that 39 percent of workers age 65 and older who were currently employed had previously retired at some point. Going back to school may provide a foundation for new skills that can make it easier to advance in a second career. Heading back to classes also can help people stay competitive in a current job.

• Engage and socialize. Going back to school provides seniors with an opportunity to engage with their peers and younger students. Returning to school may expose older adults to new experiences, technologies and customs they may otherwise never have enjoyed.

• Embrace the excitement of a new environment and its challenges. Heading back to college can be challenging, which is something seniors looking for mental stimulation may enjoy. Senior Finance Advisor reports that heading back to school and lifelong learning has been linked to better health, improved financial situations and even a reduced risk of dementia.

• Staying informed. Going back to school can enable seniors to stay technologically informed and learn about movements and other factors that are helping to shape the modern world. Seniors have many reasons to return to the college classroom, and such a pursuit can pay numerous dividends.
