munity leader, multi-sport coach, and mentor, icon, and idol of and to, many who remember him fondly. He passed in 2006, according to family members.

In addition to many of the late Mr. Terrill’s family members and friends, Shelby Mayor Stan Anthony and many of the City of Shelby’s staff members, as well as Shelby City Council members, Parks & Recreation Advisory Board members, and others in the community. Shelby Mayor

Stan Anthony presented the Terrill family with a framed resolution honoring Mr. Terrill’s many accomplishments.

“I am honored to be a part of this. We want to recognize this great field and we want to recognize this great individual,” said Mayor Anthony, adding, “This is a proud day, and a day long in coming. Mr. Mitchell Terrill was a great man!” Mayor Anthony then presented the family with a large, framed proclamation marking the day for them and their loved one.

Terrill was noted by one of the speakers as being a “...hard-working volunteer, and the first AfricanAmerican Little League baseball coach” the city had in the ‘70s.

Mr. Terrill’s daughter, Hazelene Terrill Smith, said, “He’d be so proud (of all this recognition), and would be so amazed!” She was especially pleased the City chose to honor her late father in this fashion, adding, “This (act) makes us feel so good!”

Mrs. Modestenia Bush, Mr. Terrill’s niece, noted she and others sincerely hope “...our children carry on his (Mr. Terrill’s) legacy in serving others.” She noted he was “like a father” to so many people, and was lovingly known to many as “Mr. Mitch.”

“I truly believe he touched many hundreds, maybe even thousands, of lives,” she added. She also noted that Mr. Terrill instilled in the hearts

and minds of the kids he coached and mentored not just a love of sports, but a love and desire to be the very best you can be at all you do.

After all was said and done by the gathered officials, family members of the late Mr. Terrill faced the sign on the field and pulled a cord, revealing the top of the sign which now proudly proclaims the field to be the “Mitchell Terrill Sr. Field.”

Come celebrate the wonders of Christmas in downtown Kings Mountain beginning Friday, November 22.

Christmas Tree lighting in Patriots Park November 22

Christmas magic returns to Kings Mountain this holiday season, and we can't wait to celebrate with you! Kick off the holidays with the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in Patriots Park on Friday, November 22nd, at 6:00 pm.

The city’s Christmas Kings Mountain Celebration will begin Sat., Dec. 7, at 3:00 pm. Residents and visitors are invited to attend the Christmas Kings Mountain Parade, which will take place on Kings Street, from Truist Bank, across the Overhead Bridge, left on Railroad Avenue, and on to Patriots Park. After the parade, the festival occurs downtown, along Battleground Avenue, Mountain Street, Railroad Avenue, W. Gold Street, and Patriots Park.

The park will turn into a real Winter Wonderland with Christmas lights, Carriage Rides, interactive characters, and SANTA. You may see a snowflake or three. Shop the all-new Artisan Holiday Market in Liberty Mountain Garden at the Joy Theatre, but

don’t stop there. Many treasures await you as you visit the downtown shops. Don't miss the chance to experience the joy of shopping and dining during the festive season. As merchants decorate their shops, they bring back the charm of a time when businesses worked hard to entice shoppers to the central business district. Shopping, dining, and events await, making this a festive time for all.

Bring your children, friends, and family and take photos with loved ones against the backdrop of Katie and Grady's Christmas lights throughout the park and downtown. Then, visit the toy exhibit at Kings Mountain Historical Museum and show your children and grandchildren toys from your childhood. While downtown, immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the season and cherish this special time with one another. It is an exciting time! When the switch is flipped, Christmas in Kings Mountain officially begins.

Tips for organizing a workplace gift exchange

The average person will spend around eight hours at work each day, and do so roughly five days a week. Over time, relationships with coworkers may grow, and many people become friendly with their colleagues. In such settings, it can be customary to celebrate holidays with coworkers at company-sanctioned events. Personnel tasked with organizing the sharing of gifts across departments or the company can employ the following tips to make things run smoothly.

• Defer to company rules. Companies may have guidelines in place that govern gifting. Check employee handbooks or company policies, which may dictate spending limits or even prohibit gift-giving.

• Keep it holiday nonspecific. Companies feature staff from various cultures, ethnicities and religious backgrounds. Therefore, resist any urge to affiliate the gift exchange with a specific holiday. Keep terms generalized, avoiding the use of “Secret Santa” or references to Christmas or Chanukah. Specify that gift wrap be generic as well.

• Recognize that gift-giving flows downward. The general rule of the workplace is that people at the same employment level can give gifts among themselves, but employees should not feel pressured to give gifts to their supervisors or bosses. Should one choose to do so, it could be misinterpreted and may cause rumblings across the company. If supervisors and managers want to gift their subordinates, then that

is fine so long as everyone is treated fairly.

• Decide on a spending limit. Set a firm spending limit. A range of $15 to $20 may be affordable to most, and ensures a nice gift. However, if yours is a laid back environment and everyone is lighthearted, you can have gag gifts or set a silly amount for laughs, such as purchasing gifts only at the local dollar store.

• Do not pressure participation. Engaging in a companywide gift exchange should be completely voluntary. Only those who choose to participate will exchange with others. The easiest way to do this is to collect the gifts, then hand out grab bag numbers, enabling all participants to grab a random gift from the bag or table. Also, gifts should not be highly personal or anything that may be viewed as offensive.

• Keep some spare gifts on hand. It’s happened before when someone has become ill or simply forgotten to bring a gift to the exchange. Human resource managers or department heads may want to use an expense account to have a spare gift or two on hand so that no participant walks away empty-handed.

• Exchange at the party. If an office party is part of the plan, the gift exchange can take place there at a certain point in the festivities where it will be convenient for all involved.

Office gift exchanges are common during the holiday season. A few guidelines can keep such exchanges festive and fun.

Consider these 13 gratifying Thanksgiving facts

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends and reflect on one’s blessings. In 2022, Canadian Thanksgiving takes place on October 10, while Americans celebrate on November 24. In anticipation of these holidays, here are some interesting facts about the Thanksgiving celebration.

son by 26 tons. Rather than waste the meat, Swanson sliced it up, repackaged it and created the first frozen TV dinners.

Saint Lucia, and the Netherlands celebrate their own versions of Thanksgiving.

1. American Thanksgiving is largely modeled on a 17th century harvest feast shared by the English settlers and the Wampanoag tribe.

2. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October. It is based on European harvest festivals.

3. The National Turkey Federation says around 45 million turkeys will be eaten on Thanksgiving, which equates to about 720 million pounds of turkey being consumed (with the average turkey size being 16 pounds).

4. The Butterball hotline answers roughly 100,000 calls every year on its turkey question hotline.

5. In 1953, the Swanson company overestimated the number of frozen turkeys it would sell for the holiday sea-

6. Thanksgiving in America may be older than many recognize. While Thanksgiving is largely tied to the 17th century settlers, the National Parks Service says in 1565 Spanish settlers in St. Augustine (now Florida) celebrated by having a meal to which they invited the native Seloy tribe. The Spanish served pork stew, sea biscuits, red wine, and garbanzo beans. Some say the Seloy contributed turkey, venison and maize.

7. Thanksgiving didn’t become a civic holiday until Abraham Lincoln made it one after the Civil War tragedy. Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday on October 20, 1864.

8. The Pilgrims did not refer to themselves as “pilgrims.” They used the word “separatists” as they were separating themselves from a larger belief system.

9. In addition to Canada and the United States, Grenada, Liberia, the Philippines,

10. Each year, the American president “pardons” a turkey from slaughter on Thanksgiving. This tradition dates back to when Abraham Lincoln’s son was upset that his family’s turkey that was going to be killed for Thanksgiving dinner.

11. According to the U.S. Calorie Control Council (CCC), an average American may consume 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day.

12. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual tradition. People line the parade route in New York City or tune in to watch the parade on television. It originated in 1924 and the famed balloons were added in 1927.

13. Apple pie is the pie of choice for Thanksgiving, even though pumpkin pie is prevalent this time of year. Thanksgiving is a popular holiday in Canada and the U.S. Many traditions have been borne of the holiday, and it is a favorite time of year for many people.

Savoring Christ

(Part 2 of the “Stuffing” Series)

Many of us find joy in preparing comforting meals; one dish that often takes center stage at the dinner table is stuffing. Just as this savory mixture of bread and spices fills a turkey, we can reflect on a deeper truth: our lives can only be filled and fulfilled through our relationship with Jesus Christ. Joy and great satisfaction come from being fully engaged in our faith. Ephesians 3:19 (NIV) beautifully captures this concept:

“And to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

The fulfillment we seek is found not in material possessions or fleeting pleasures, but in knowing the love of Christ. His love penetrates our hearts, filling the emptiness we often feel.

Source of Nourishment

Imagine the raw turkey, awaiting its transformation. It’s only when the stuffing is added that it is truly brought to life and fullness. Similarly, our lives may feel empty or unseasoned without Jesus. He is our stuffing—our source of nourishment. John 10:10 (NIV) tells us, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” This abundance is not merely about having more but about living fully in Him, experiencing joy, peace, and purpose that surpasses human understanding. In addition, being filled with the Holy Spirit is akin to having

the perfect blend of ingredients in our stuffing. A life infused with the Holy Spirit is filled with love, kindness, patience, and joy. Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” When we allow the Holy Spirit to fill us, we become more like Christ, embodying these qualities and impacting those around us.

Self-Reflection

As we prepare our holiday feasts, let’s take a moment to reflect on our spiritual nourishment. Is our lives overflowing with Christ’s love? Are we allowing the Holy Spirit to fill us to the brim? Just as we take time to carefully prepare and season our stuffing, we should invest time in prayer, reading Scripture, and nurturing our rela-

Holiday baking pointers

The holiday season is steeped in tradition. Baking is one tradition that comes with the holiday territory.

Many people may only bake in November and December, so it’s understandable if they’re a little rusty come the holiday season. These baking tips can lead to successful yields of cookies, cakes and other holiday treats.

Follow the recipe carefully

When cooking, it is easy to add an extra dash of this or a pinch of that. But baking is a science and the ingredients are used in a ratio to produce a desired chemical reaction while cooking. To ensure success, do not substitute ingredients unless the recipe tells you how to do so, and measure each addition carefully.

Spoon out your measurements

It can be tempting to dig a measuring cup right into a bag of flour, but scooping packs the ingredients down — potentially causing you to use more than the recipe calls for. Instead, spoon the flour into your measuring cup gently and use a straight edge to level it out. Even better, use a scale and metric measurements to ensure exact amounts of wet and dry ingredients.

Read up on temperature

Certain ingredients, like

tionship with God. This is how we can experience true fulfillment. Lamentations 3:40 (AMP) says, “Let us test and examine our ways, And let us return to the LORD.”

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Lord, I praise you for your unconditional love for me. I have tasted and seen that you are good. You are the bread of life. Help me to feast off your word and truly understand what it means so I can please you. I ask you to fill me with the Holy Spirit to the overflowing. Cleanse me from everything that’s not like you. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church

where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

ature-dependent. Cold butter in biscuits helps them to rise up flaky and delicious. Eggs brought to room temperature enable the emulsification process to work more readily. The difference in temperature can mean a completely different chemical reaction, so follow the recipe accordingly.

Calibrate the oven

Purchase an oven thermometer, set your oven to 350 F, the standard baking temperature, and see what the thermometer reads. If it is different, adjust cooking times accordingly or have the oven repaired. Cooking at the wrong temperature might mean the recipe doesn’t turn out right. Use unsalted butter

Most recipes will call for unsalted butter so you aren’t adding unwanted sodium to the

recipe, affecting dough consistency and flavor.

Position pans centrally

Pans should be on the center rack of the oven. If the oven isn’t wide enough to put multiple pans side by side, place them on different racks and slightly offset them to enable air circulation.

Use parchment paper

This unsung hero of baking can keep cookies from spreading out on baking sheets, prevent cakes from sticking to pans and may even help batter and dough bake evenly.

Flip cakes

Cool cakes upside down on a cooling rack. This will help flatten out the tops, which makes it easier to stack and level cakes for layered cakes.

A few tips can go a long way to helping holiday baking go more smoothly.

Tips when planting shade trees

Beautiful landscaping can add instant curb appeal to a property. But beauty isn’t the only thing that makes idyllic landscaping attractive to homeowners. Some landscaping features, such as shade trees, save homeowners money while adding aesthetic appeal.

The U.S. Department of Energy notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home. Shading also cuts air conditioning costs, which tend to be expensive in areas with warm, humid climates. In fact, the DOE notes that well-planned landscapes can reduce unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by anywhere from 15 to 50 percent.

When planting shade trees, one of the first decisions homeowners will need to make is which type of tree, deciduous or evergreen, they want to plant. Deciduous trees are those that seasonally shed their leaves, while evergreens are trees that keep their leaves throughout the year. Deciduous trees can help keep homes cool in the summer by blocking sun, and those same trees can be beneficial in winter after they shed their leaves by letting the sun in and keeping homes warm. But evergreens also can be beneficial in winter by blocking wind, potentially preventing cold air from making its way into a home through cracks in walls or around windows.

When planting shade trees, techniques vary depending on which type of tree homeowners ultimately choose to plant. Planting deciduous trees:The DOE says that deciduous trees that are between six and eight feet tall when planted will begin shading the windows of a home within a year of being planted. Depending on the species of the plant and the home, those same deciduous trees may begin shading the roof within five to 10 years of being planted. When planting deciduous trees, homeowners should keep these tips in mind.

• Plant trees to the south of the home. When planted to the south of the home, deciduous trees can screen between 70 and 90 percent of the summer sun while still allowing residents to feel summer breezes.

• Consider sun angles. Homeowners who want to shade their homes from low afternoon sun angles should plant trees with crowns that are lower to the ground on the west side of their homes.

• Cool air before it reaches your home. Shrubs and groundcover plants can be planted to cool air before it reaches a home.

Evergreen trees: Planting evergreens to block wind is known as “windbreaking,” which lowers the wind chill near a home. Wind also can be used to cool a home in summer. But these benefits can only be realized when evergreens are strategically planted.

• Location, location, location: The DOE advises planting evergreen trees to the north and northwest of the home to stop wind. In addition, to get the most bang for your windbreaking buck, the distance between the home and windbreak should be two to five times the height of the mature tree.

• Plant trees on either side of the house. Planting trees on either side of the house will direct cooling winds toward the home in the summer.

Shade trees can help homeowners reduce their energy bills, making them valuable and attractive additions to any landscape.
