Service above self is the role of Shelby Rotary Club Service above self is the Rotary International motto and the practice of Shelby Rotary Club (SRC). Over the past four months, the Club has organized and participated in several activities to serve others in the community. Audrey Whetten Godfrey, SRC president shared, “Service above self has been the role of Shelby Rotary Club for ninety-seven years. Our vision for this year is to focus on the needs of the community and to help people and make a difference each day.” The initiative started in August when two Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) students arrived in Shelby, and they began their experiences of learning American culture and customs. It was not long before Fritzi Schmidt from Germany and Leti Mori from

ROTARY From Page 1 neighbors around the world at the Rise Against Hunger event in September at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. At one of SRC weekly meetings, members made activity bags to be given in to participants in the Meals on Wheels program coordinated by the Neal Senior Center. Included in the bags were activity books, crayons, and notes of encouragement. In October and November, Rotarians read to all the third grade students in Cleveland County Schools (CCS). December brings opportunities to serve others by Ringing the Bell for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. Each year for the past sixty years, SRC has volunteered at least one day to ring the bell. It has become a tradition for many Rotarians to ring the bell with family members to start the holiday season. 2024 Bellwether Award Finalists Announced (SAN ANTONIO, Texas) The Bellwether College Consortium announced 30 Bellwether Finalists will compete for the 2024 Bellwether Award at the 30th Annual Community College Futures Assembly (CCFA). This nationally recognized award identifies and honors outstanding and innovative community college programs in three award categories. “The ingenuity and innovation demonstrated by these community colleges make them shining examples of the solutions-focused culture prevalent in these organizations,” said Rose Martinez, Ph.D., director for the Bellwether College Consortium. “The consortium looks forward to hosting 30 award-winning finalists at the Community College Futures Assembly.” A Bellwether Finalist is a community college with a program that scores highest in the first round of competition and is invited to compete in the final round of award competition. Finalists were announced recently on November 15. The Bellwether Award categories are instructional programs and services, workforce development, and planning, governance and finance. Finalists in the Instructional Programs and Services category, which recognizes programs and services that foster or support teaching and learning are: Reading Area Community College (CA) Hudson County Community College (NJ) Ventura College (CA) Columbia Basin College (WA) Leeward Community College (HI) Cerritos College (CA) North Florida College (FL) Allan Hancock Joint Community College District (CA) Northwest Mississippi Community College (MS) Northwood Technical College (WI) Finalists in the Workforce Development category, which identifies strategic alliances that promote community and economic development are: Cleveland Community College (NC) Central Community College (NE) Gaston College (NC) Southside Virginia Community College (VA) St. Louis Community College (MO) Del Mar College (TX)

Event co-sponsors include the National Council of Instructional Administrators, the National Council for State Directors of Community Colleges, and the National Council for Continuing Education and Training. The national competition will be held February 25 - 27, in San Antonio, Texas. The 2024 Bellwether Award recipients will be named at the event. It never fails that each deer hunting season I get a slight strain in my upper back and a vertebra that tries to dislocate. Most of the time, these return to normal after a few days back to my normal activities, along with a mini massage. I’m fairly strong in my neck, shoulders, and back, so it’s not something from just being terribly out of shape. It comes GARY MILLER from an activity that I don’t do during the rest of the year. And that activity happens because of some of the places where my tree stand is located. Let me explain. We deer hunters are always hanging stands or already have stands located in specific places. These stands are placed according to the direction we think the deer are most likely to come from. Normally, we want to see the deer just in front of us or coming from a direction that is the most comfortable according to whether we are right-handed or left-handed. But this is not always the case. Sometimes we’re in a location where that buck can come from any direction. As a result, we are constantly turning our heads, looking side to side, and behind us, to see if something is approaching. And as a result of this day after day movement, my back and neck get contorted and sometimes strained. What I’ve learned is, I can never see it all. That no matter how hard I look, or how hard I strain, or how strategic I place my stand, I just can’t see it all. There is always a blind spot and there is always a chance that while I’m looking in one direction, the deer are going to pop up in another. It’s just the way it is. That’s why hunting in a blind with someone else is so helpful. Four eyes are better than two. Having someone who sees things before you do is always a game-changer when it comes to being ready. As I thought about this, I was reminded of the times I deliberately and intentionally worship God. Most of us really don’t know what worship is. We have associated it with only emotionalism and even location. But worship is very simple. It has to be for us all to be able to do it. And it has to be because God wants us to do it and would have never made something so important, so vague. So, what is worship? It is simply recognizing who God is, in comparison to who I am. (That’s why the most common posture in the Bible for those who worshiped, was kneeling. It shows a subservient position). Here is how I do it when I decide to worship God. I say “Today God, I recognize who you are in comparison to who I am. You can do things I can’t do. You know things I don’t know. You SEE THINGS I CAN’T SEE. You are the Creator and I am your most loved and prized creation. You are God and I am not.” When I say that to God, I have just worshiped him and have brought him into my life as my perfect partner who makes us a perfect team. You can do that as well. And I hope you will today. Because what you need to know, do, and see today, is more important than what’s going on in your blind. Gary Miller has written Outdoor Truths articles for 21 years. He has also written five books which include compilations of his articles and a father/son devotional. He also speaks at wild-game dinners and men’s events for churches and associations. gary@outdoortruths.org

Beyond the plate (5th & Final Part of “Leftovers” Series) This Thanksgiving, my family and I were invited to come over to a dear friend’s DANYALE PATTERSON home. We were elated! To say that the food was good is an understatement - it was scrumptious! As my AfricanAmerican culture says, “She put her foot in it,” which means it was extremely delicious. Not only was the food good, but the fellowship and hospitality of both her and her husband were full of joy and love. In addition, she cooked enough food to feed a small island and sent us home with pans of food. My family and I thanked God for blessing us through the Wiggins family. It also caused me to reflect, “Are people thanking God, because of my generosity? Am I being a blessing to someone?” 2 Corinthians 9:11 says, “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us, your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” EYES ARE ON YOU Rise during the night and cry out. Pour out your hearts like water to the Lord. Lift up your hands to him in prayer, pleading for your children, for in every street they are faint with hunger. Lamentations 2:19

Beyond their Thanksgiving hospitality, the Wiggins family often find multiple ways to share, serve, and love people in the church, community, and marketplace. They have embraced my daughter and mentored her, along with several other youth. One day my daughter came home and told me how she was very impressed with Aunt Alexis (her term of endearment for her), because every time she is with her, she is thoughtful and kind to everyone. She noticed that Aunt Alexis was always doing something for somebody. She wanted to be like her. I Corinthians 11:1 (NIV) says, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” Someone is always watching us - children, relatives, friends, co-workers, etc. Whether we like it or not, we are a billboard for righteousness or unrighteousness. Most importantly, our Heavenly Father is watching us. Proverbs 15:3 (AMP) says, “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, watching the evil and the good (in all their endeavors.)” A child of God’s goal is to please the Lord by the way we love others. PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father, I love you and I praise you as the ultimate giver. Forgive me for the

selfishness in my heart. Lord, I ask you to purify my heart so that I can be in your perfect will and point others to Christ. Bless the Wiggins family and all those who are giving of themselves to honor you and make a difference in someone’s life. In Jesus’ name, I pray - Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD God loves you more than you can comprehend. He is waiting with open arms for you to ask forgiveness and receive Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. Your salvation is the most costly gift you will ever receive because Christ took the penalty of sin to keep your soul from eternal damnation - if you surrender your life to him. Romans 10:9 (ESV) says, “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. On November 11, thirtythree of the Clifford's Army Rescue dogs arrived at Kings Mountain Gateway trail for their monthly hike and socialization event. Since January, this event has become one of the most participated in events ever, with more volunteers signing up each month to hike with the CARE doggies. Not only do the humans and dogs get great exercise, but they also benefit from socialization. The different trails offer choices for energetic or Who’s having more fun? This puppy is ready for a nap. calm dogs, allowing everyone to choose how invigorating they want their hike to be. Once back, most people hang out with the dogs and the people for a bit. During one of the hikes, a person who was already hiking the trail came by and asked what was going on, and if she could participate. CARE worked it out for her to take a dog with her on her hike. Another lady with her two children asked for information and was so excited that she would be looking to sign up for the next hike. People have come from surrounding counties to join the fun, with one volunteer driving down from Tryon each month to participate. Clifford's Army Rescue is grateful for all the community support and the wonderful staff at Kings Mountain Gateway trail who make this event happen each month. Not only does the exercise and socialization benefit our rescue dogs during the hike, but it also helps them to find forever homes. Although Clifford's Army Rescue will skip December, they plan to celebrate their one-year anniversary with a hike in January. And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

I am a retired computer scientist. I am also a 1952 polio patient. Through hard work and determination I was able to live a grand life.. Was able to walk for the first 65 years of my life. Traveled around the world, worked for our military before became an emergency manager. Became a first responder after 911. But as in most sad stories, which this is not one, I have lost my ability to walk due to post-polio syndrome. After 51 years in Florida, I chose to move back to my home state. Grew up in Winston-Salem. Educated at Wingate college and it was on after that. There wasn’t a computer in the world that was safe from my playing. Now, I need help and I am willing to trade room-board for someone to care for me. As a friend of 51 years said, there has always been someone to care for my domestic needs. You will be provided with high speed internet, computer if required or wanted, large room for personal use. If You have a question, ask. The only wrong question is the one not asked. If you want to know who I am, www.bobillings.org will explain. (561) 236-7348 bowpfl@bellsouth.net WE ARE SEEKING A MAINTENANCE TECH FOR OUR BEAUTIFUL COMMUNITY.
