River Hill Refuge, located at 2309 Emerald Mine Rd., Shelby, is hosting a dedication ceremony on Saturday, April 27, at 11 a.m., according to Mr. Blake Ragsdale, Director of Communications and Managing Editor of Charity and Children of Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina.

Three new homes will be dedicated that day, noted Mr. Ragsdale, and there will be tours and refreshments following the dedication, he added. He said, “The dedication ceremony will be held in the beautiful pastureland of the Westmoreland family’s former River Hill Angus farm, now home for River Hill Refuge. Casual dress is recommended and comfortable walking shoes are a must!”

Ragsdale also noted that, “Baptist Children’s Homes of

North Carolina is excited to be expanding its ministry into Cleveland County and the surrounding region. The Refuge, a new ministry of Baptist Children’s Homes, provides “Freedom from the Past and Hope for the Future” for “… children who have lived a life of trauma.”

Ragsdale said, “There is minimal parking on site,” adding “Additional parking and a shuttle will be available at Shelby Mission Camp at 302 Sharpton Drive, Shelby.”

The houses are the legacy of the late Dr. Ted Westmoreland’s “hard work, compassion and love for his family,” continued through his sons, Wes and Jay, who have decided to use part of their father’s Angus farmland to build three family foster homes through Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina.

“The homes will be used to transform the lives of countless disadvantaged children in Cleveland County and share with them the hope of Jesus Christ.”

Doctor Westmoreland began River Hill Angus, a purebred Angus farm in Cleveland County, in 1969. For the next two decades, his two sons, Wes and Jay, enjoyed countless hours working with him at River Hill.

River Hill Refuge to dedicate three new homes in April 27 ceremony

Dr. Westmoreland’s “…integrity, eye for evaluating cattle, and dedication to superior genetics helped develop a great reputation for River Hill. The farm became a vital tool for instilling the strong work ethics, entrepreneurial

skills, and compassion that he readily taught. The long hours See RIVER HILL, Page 10

Please contact Daniel Dedmon, Neal Senior Center Program Director, at 704/481-7387 and share your suggestion…it may turn into a regular class at the Neal Senior Center!

I just returned from Texas. I make a few trips there each year now. I get to hang out with some incredible guys. Some I’ve known for years, and some I meet for the first time. This last event was around a golf weekend. I don’t play golf any longer, but I, along with a host, put on an event each year for 12 guys. These events are called Circle Events, and you can check out my website to learn more. But my point in mentioning them is not for promotion, but to establish that I fly quite often. And while I’ve never flown first-class, I do upgrade to a seat with more legroom. On longer trips especially, it’s worth every extra dime. And while there are a few more perks, I still have to walk on the left side of the retractable stanchion. You know, those 4-inch bands of material held up on each side by a stainless-steel post. You see, when an airline puts passengers on a plane, first-class passengers get to go on first and they get to walk on the right side of the stanchion as they approach the door. Everyone else gets to go through the same door, but we have to walk on the left side of the stanchion. And first-class is always seated first, so the rest of us can view their comfortable confines as we fight for the closest overhead bin. Have you ever wondered why first-class is seated first? Do you think it’s because they want to spend an extra 30 minutes on a plane? I think not. Once again, it is to remind us 19c-left-side-of-the-stanchion people, that they and we are not the same. Oh, it’s not necessarily the people in first class that feel this way. It’s the airlines that want us to sense that we are so close, and yet so far away. And they reinforce it one last time by closing that little 3-foot-see-through curtain, to remind us of the difference. Because after all, doesn’t everyone want to walk on the right side of the stanchion to get to the same door?

I arrived at the security gate to the golf course we had reservations for. It was swank. When I showed up, I’m sure they thought I was part of the grounds-keeping crew. Oh, there’s nothing wrong with that crew. It’s just they are not the same as the residents and members. How do I know? There was a left road and a right road. Both went to the same place, but the way one entered needed always to remind each person, there are some who deserve to get in more than others.

Some of you think heaven has a left road and a right road. You think while there may only be one door, there will be the left-ofthe-stanchion people and the right-of-the-stanchion people. And you’ll be on the left side. But here’s the good news. Not only is there only one door, but there is also only one class. Jesus saw to that when he paid for each of our tickets. Grace makes us all right-side-of-the-stanchion children and residents. Get comfy. God gave you priority status.

working on the farm brought a respect for labor and an unending family bond.”

The farm gained prominence as Wes and Jay exhibited cattle, first at the Cleveland County Fair and later at state and national exhibitions.

The brothers today are successful businessmen and are active in a host of charitable endeavors that enhance their communities and they envision the farm being a resource to transform the lives of disadvantaged children so that they will find freedom from the past and learn transformative life lessons to provide hope for the future.

In response to questions, Mr. Ragsdale noted the brothers donated their property in Shelby to Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina (BCH) and made a lead gift to build the first home in memory of their father. The property is located on the family farm, River Hill Angus, near Shelby – this is where the name originates from. The Westmoreland’s late father, Dr. Ted G. Westmoreland, was a successful veterinarian and noted for raising championship cattle.

Jay and Wes grew up working on the farm with their father and this is a very nostalgic project for them, stated Mr. Ragsdale, who added, “but most importantly, it is a project that carries on the family legacy that will impact the lives of the NC foster care children living there.”

Baptist Children’s Homes has locations throughout the state but did not have a presence in the Cleveland County area until River Hill Refuge became a reality. It was a gap that needed to be filled as the needs in the area are significant.

The Westmoreland’s generosity was the catalyst for filling that gap. In addition to the gift of property, the brothers made a lead financial donation to build the first home in memory of their father who passed along his love for BCH and heart for philanthropy to his sons. Their efforts provided the momentum needed to begin raising the $4.3 million that is required to build the homes.

Regarding the project’s start, Jay Westmoreland noted, “A few days after dad’s funeral in 2017, I returned to walk the property,” he remembered. “I

called Wes and invited him to join me. I shared the growing vision that had been implanted in my heart, and Wes immediately embraced the concept. We developed ideas together, and we reached out to our friends at Baptist Children’s Homes to invite the organization to minister here in Cleveland County and surrounding areas.”

Wes Westmoreland said, “We see the needs of so many disadvantaged children – their current circumstances are grim as abuse and abandonment is far too common. Our efforts come from a desire to see this change.”

Ragsdale stated, “The three homes are very unique in that they are foster family homes. What this means is that while Baptist Children’s Homes (BCH) owns the property, the people that live there are licensed foster families who want to make a difference in the lives of the foster children that will come into the homes. Each home will have a set of BCH-recruited and licensed foster parents who care for as many as six children at one time. The foster parents will care for the children the same way as other foster parents. They have the benefit of living at these spacious, family-style homes which gives them the room they need to care for these boys and girls. The families operate just as any family would. They have their own jobs and schedules like a normal family except live in these homes which are owned by BCH. The foster parents will also have the ongoing support from BCH’s Foster Care case managers."

The work done at the homes is in partnership, wrote Mr. Ragsdale, “…with our local NC Departments of Social Services to connect chil-

dren in their custody with our foster care families who can provide them a caring home for as long as needed. Foster care children can be up to age 18.”

He continued, “A top priority is ensuring the privacy and safety of the children and families we serve. Because the homes at River Hill Refuge are created to provide care for children in the NC foster care system, we have parameters in place to provide them with a safe place where they can thrive for as long as we have the privilege to care for them.”

Ragsdale said the idea for the homes really came from the hearts of Jay and Wes Westmoreland and their family.

“Determining the types of homes they would be and the kind of care they would offer was a collaboration between them and our Baptist Children’s Homes leadership,” he said, via email.

He continued, “We always strive to evaluate what the needs are in the different areas of the state where we serve and how we can best

meet those needs. How everything came together has been a tremendous partnership built on the Westmoreland’s generosity and their hearts to see children’s lives impacted for the better. As a nonprofit, there is no way Baptist Children’s Homes could meet the variety of needs we see – which can range from abuse, neglect, and family dysfunction – without the friendship of those who have the desire and resources to make a difference. River Hill Refuge is a beautiful example of what can happen when all of these things come together. The result is the opportunity to see children’s lives forever changed in the Cleveland County area and beyond.”

Much like their owners, dogs benefit from healthy diets in a variety of ways. A healthy diet provides the energy dogs need to be active, and that activity allows them to maintain healthy weights.

Dogs that eat healthy diets also are less susceptible to illness.

Minerals: Minerals help dogs develop strong bones and teeth and maintain fluid balance. Dogs cannot naturally synthesize minerals, so minerals must be provided in dogs’ diets.

Protect pets from pesticides

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals notes that many high-end commercial dog foods already boast the nutrients dogs need to live long and healthy lives, but dog owners may not know which ingredients to look for when reading pet food labels. According to the ASPCA, the following are a handful of essential nutrients that should be included in dogs’ diets.

Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are a valuable source of energy for dogs’ body tissues and play a role in intestinal health. Fiber is a good source of carbohydrates for dogs, but the fiber must be a moderately fermentable fiber, such as beet pulp, for dogs to get the most benefit. Highly fermentable fiber can lead to flatulence and excess mucus, while low fermentability can lead to poor development. The ASPCA recommends that dog owners avoid feeding high-fiber foods to dogs with high-energy requirements, which include young and growing dogs.

Fats: Fats are a great energy source for dogs, providing more than twice the energy of proteins and carbohydrates.

Fats also play an essential role in the production of hormones, and they are necessary to absorb and utilize fatsoluble vitamins. A dog’s diet must include essential fatty acids, such as linoleic acid, as dogs cannot synthesize them in sufficient amounts on their own.

Replacing some omega-6 fatty acids with omega-3 fatty acids can reduce inflammation resulting from allergies, arthritis, intestinal issues, and kidney problems. The ASPCA notes that the optimal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is between 5 and 10 to 1 and that it is impossible to determine this ratio when feeding dogs homecooked foods, as only fixed-formula foods can guarantee an appropriate ratio.

Protein: The ASPCA notes that proteins are essential to dog health, playing a vital role in their growth, ability to reproduce and ability to repair and maintain their bodies. Numerous food sources can provide dogs with adequate protein, but the ASPCA warns against giving dogs raw eggs, which contain a potentially harmful anti-vitamin known as avidin, which can interfere with a dog’s ability to properly metabolize fats, glucose, amino acids, and energy. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, and those known as essential amino acids cannot be synthesized by dogs, meaning they must be provided in a diet.

Vitamins: Vitamins promote normal metabolic function in dogs, and most vitamins cannot be synthesized in dogs’ bodies. While vitamins are essential, the ASPCA notes that vitamin supplements should only be given to dogs on the advice of a veterinarian, as excess vitamins in the body can weaken dogs’ bones and result in bone and join pain as well as dry skin.

Water: Fresh, clean water should be available to dogs at all times. Dogs will get some water from the food they eat, as the ASPCA notes that dry dog food has up to 10 percent moisture and canned dog food has up to 78 percent moisture. But an adult dog still needs more water than its food can provide.

Water accounts for anywhere from 60 to 70 percent of an adult dog’s body weight, and a 15 percent decline in that body water can cause death, making it imperative that owners routinely refill their dogs’ bowls with fresh, clean water.

More information about healthy dog diets is available at www.aspca.org.

When using pesticides or other chemical-based products around the house, prevent pets from accessing treated areas after application.

Homeowners use pesticides in their yards for a variety of reasons. Some utilize pesticides to make their lawns appear lush and healthy, while others must use pesticides to address issues like insect infestations.

Applying pesticides is often frowned upon by environmentalists, but it’s not just Mother Earth who can suffer from the use of pesticides. If your family pet loves to get outdoors and run around in the yard, you might be putting your four-legged friend in danger if you’re not careful when applying pesticides. Exposure to pesticides can make pets sick and, in some instances, prove fatal. But pet owners can reduce that risk significantly by adhering to the following tips.

Remove pets and their items from the lawn before applying pesticide. It’s a no-brainer to move Fido inside before applying pesticide to your lawn. But homeowners should also scour the yard for toys, bedding and feeding dishes and move them inside or into the garage before applying a pesticide. Pet health could be at risk if such items are left in the yard and get even a drop or two of pesticide on them. Therefore, carefully scour the yard for your pet’s belongings, raking high grass to find toys or bones when necessary, before applying pesticides.

Adhere to the instructions on the pesticide label. The label on the pesticide you choose should have specific instructions as to how much pesticide you should apply and how long you must wait before allowing anyone, including the family pet, to gain access to the treated

area. If you let your pet back in the area too quickly, the animal could be poisoned. Be careful inside, too. Chemical products are not only used to treat lawns. If you need to use a chemical product like a bug bomb indoors, keep pets in mind before application. Remove bedding, feeding dishes and toys, and cover your fish tank to prevent liquid and vapors from getting into the tank and threatening the lives of your fish.

Keep areas treated for pests off limits to pets. If you have a pest problem in your home, be it insects or rodents, keep any areas you treat with chemical products off limits until the issue has been successfully resolved. Even if pets aren’t in the room during or after application, they can still be poisoned if they eat poisoned insects or rodents. This is called secondary poisoning, and pet owners concerned about their pets but still in need of a way to eradicate pests should look for a product with a low risk for secondary poisoning.

Keep bait products out of the reach of your pets. Bait products are often effective because they’re attractive to insects or rodents. Unfortunately, the same properties that attract pests might also attract your companion animal. When using bait products around the house, be sure to place them beyond the reach of your pets. If you’re using bait products that you must bury outdoors, keep in mind that dogs and maybe even cats can often dig these products up rather easily. So once

The Power of Forgiveness

(Part 3 of “SPRING FORWARD” Series)

I love my job as an educator at a middle school, despite the challenges it may sometimes b ring. Recently, while administering a state assessment to a group of 8th graders, I encountered multiple technical issues and a disruptive student. This unexpected behavior left me feeling unsettled even after the incident. However, I was reminded of the importance of forgiveness by the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit, prompting me to let go of the offense and extend grace. I decided to bless the student by offering treats to all students for their excellent behavior, without singling

her out. Surprised and happy, she accepted the gift after I shared that she was forgiven. Matthew 6:1415 (CEV) says, “If you forgive others for the wrongs they do to you, your Father in heaven will forgive you. But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

A GREAT LESSON

The act of blessing those who have hurt, mistreated, or offended me is a lesson I have learned over the years. By forgiving, praying for, and blessing others, I have been able to move forward in relationships without holding onto bitterness. This practice aligns with the scriptures in Luke 6:27-28 (AMP) which says, “But I say to you who hear [Me and pay attention to My words]: Love [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for] your enemies, [make it a practice to] do good to those who

hate you, bless and show kindness to those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

IT’S A CHOICE

I encourage you to rise above any anger or bitterness and embrace all the blessings God has in store for you by choosing to forgive. Your feelings will tell you that it’s too hard. Your pride will say that they don’t deserve your forgiveness. However, we must yield our desires, thoughts, and emotions to Christ, our Lord. When we don’t delay to obey, he works out everything. Romans 8:28 (AMP) says, “And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.”

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Father, You are a merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in mercy. Thank you for giving me

another chance. Help me to extend unconditional love and grace to everyone I come in contact with. I ask you to love through me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. By dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying, you can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God.
