Wake the World offers disabled a chance to ski

It’s time once again for fun in the water for those who may not typically have the opportunity to participate in traditional water sports.

Wake the World, a non-profit organization that offers recreational water sports events for disabled or disadvantaged children or adults, will once again hold an open day of skiing and water tubing at Moss Lake at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, 2024.

“We can ski anyone,” says event organizer Chuck Hoyle. “Our participants have a variety of challenges, and our volunteers are excellent at making it happen and providing a safe, fun experience for the new skiers.”

Hoyle is paralyzed from the waist down and is an avid adaptive skier.

“Adaptive water skiing has been a wonderful addition to my life, and I want to share it with as many folks as we can,” says Hoyle. “We are offering this event for the disabled to try something they may have never tried before. We also encourage those who have joined us in previous years to come back and participate again.”

Hoyle first brought Wake the World to Cleveland County in 2018 and 2019 but was prevented from holding it in 2020 due to COVID. In 2021 the event was revived and now it will return for a sixth time at Moss Lake.

“Last year was our best year,” says Hoyle. “We had eight skiers, more than 30 volunteers and a lot more people who came and just rode on pontoon boats around the lake. We had a blast!”

Hoyle says that the volunteers always have more fun than the participants. And volunteers are needed once again for this year’s event.

“Wake the World uses adaptive skiing equipment to allow participants to enjoy skiing with support from side skiers,” says Hoyle. “Side skiers help the participants into the water and to get up on the skis. Volunteers are needed for these duties and to assist with logistics on the dock.”

Participant spaces are limited, so those interested are asked to call Hoyle at 704734-1050 as soon as possible. Volunteers can also call this number to sign up to help, and weather-related questions can also be directed to Hoyle.

This time of year, the deer look really bad. They are thin, patchy, and are fighting ticks, other parasites, and disease. As you may know, this is the time of year when the population can be devastated. CWD and EHD are diseases that every hunter will look for during these hot months. The weakest will not survive. But here is what makes this a little confusing. This time of year, the abundance of food sources is perhaps the greatest. Yes, the acorns will begin falling soon, but the fruit trees, garden plants, and other browse are at their peak. Food is everywhere, and yet life is the most fragile. I really don’t know what to think about that. All over the world we see disease and death tied directly to starvation. We rarely see it tied to abundance. The only thing I can attribute to this contrast is the fact that not only does the good and best thrive in abundance, so does the bad and hurtful. It seems that times of plenty are not necessarily a sign of health. In the physical world that may be debated. In the spiritual world, it’s an objective truth. Over the years I have watched people suffer great loss. And while they have serious questions for God, and while they can even get mad at His inaction, most somehow cling to their faith. I have also watched the homeless and hungry look to the sky to thank God when the least blessing comes their way. It seems they too are quick to run to God when hurt, hunger, and heartache come their way. But when it comes to extreme blessings, most of us find a way to replace God with the wealth He has blessed us with. Especially when it comes to money. Money allows us to buy things. And the more money we have, the more things we can buy. And the more things we can buy, the easier it is to preoccupy ourselves. And while we are preoccupied, a disease is setting in that our possessions will not be able to heal. But hear this. It is not the fault of the blessing. God wants to give them to us. But it’s my fault if I don’t keep these blessings in their rightful place. Am I only warning the rich? No. I’m warning guys like me and you. The guys whose blessings are not in the form of yachts, but in the form of Bass Trackers. And whose ownership doesn’t include thousands of acres, but only a few. I’m warning me. I’m reminding myself that during times of abundance, I need to watch for the parasites. Because abundance can be a feeding ground for those things that want to kill my relationship with God.

School bus safety - does your child know the rules?

Millions of students use school buses daily as transportation to and from school.

Although school buses represent the safest form of highway transportation, students and drivers should be aware of numerous safety factors. Hoping to ensure school bus safety, Sheriff Alan Norman encourages caution when-

ever school buses are present.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in recent years, there were an average of 128 fatalities in school transportation-related traffic crashes each year, and more school-aged pedestrians have been killed during

the hours of 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. than any other time of day.

“Children are often eager to get off the school bus because they are excited to tell their parents about all the fun they had at school that day,” said Sheriff Norman.

“It is crucial that parents re-enforce the school bus

safety rules children learn at school.”

Sheriff Norman also suggests that parents drive their child’s bus route with them to

practice the proper safety precautions they can take to help ensure their child enjoys a safe ride to and from school.

Sheriff Norman encour-

ages all parents to discuss the following safety measures with their children:

Student

• Always arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early.

• While the bus is approaching, stand at least three giant steps away from the curb, and wait until the

bus has come to a complete stop, the door opens, and the bus driver says that it’s OK to board.

• Always walk on the sidewalk when preparing to cross the street near a bus. Make eye contact with the driver to ensure they see you.

• Never walk behind the bus.

• If you are walking beside the bus, walk at least three giant steps away.

• Use the handrail when entering and exiting the bus. Take extra precautions to ensure that clothing with drawstrings and book bags does not get caught in the handrail or door.

• Never stop to pick

wins national championship in archery

Makenzie Glenn, a rising junior at Pinnacle Classical Academy, won a national championship in archery at the Western 3D & Outdoor Target National Championship.

The competition, organized by Scholastic 3-D Archery, took place in New Castle, Colorado, from July 26 to 28. Makenzie won the national title in the Young Adult Female Pins 3D Archery category and finished in third place in the Young Adult Female Outdoor Target category.

"We are so proud of Makenzie for her amazing accomplishment, the result of years of hard work and perseverance," said Dr. Shelly

Shope, the school's headmaster.

"Five of our graduates in recent years have been awarded archery scholarships that have made college significantly more affordable," Dr. Shope added. "We are grateful for the work of our coach, Todd Tongel, and for all the support shown by our archery team families."

Founded in 2013, Pinnacle Classical Academy is a tuition-free public charter school in Shelby that attracts over 1,200 students from five counties. It is recognized as one of the best elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Motorists

• Remember that children are unpredictable in their actions. Take extreme caution when traveling in a school zone.

• If there are no sidewalks, drive cautiously. Be more alert to the possibility of children walking in the road.

• Slow down and prepare to stop whenever you see yellow school bus lights flashing.

• Never pass a school bus when there are flashing red lights and the stop arm is extended. This is a sign that children are getting on or off the bus. Motorists must wait until the red lights stop flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus moves before they can start driving again.

The God Of Miracles

Life often presents us with a whirlwind of challenges and uncertainties that can be overwhelming. Yet, amidst all these problems, we hold onto a steadfast promise: our God is a miracle-working God! He can transform the impossible into reality and lift us up in our times of need. His Word and Spirit reassure us that we are never alone. In moments of doubt, we can find comfort in knowing He is always working behind the scenes for our good. His power goes beyond our understand-

ing and opens doors we thought were firmly closed. Jeremiah 32:17 (ESV), “Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.”

What is a Miracle?

At its core, a miracle is a divine intervention in the natural order of things. It’s a tangible sign of God’s grace, power, and love manifesting in our lives. In Scripture, miracles are woven throughout the narrative, showcasing God’s magnificence. Psalm 77:14 (NIV) says, “You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.” However, miracles are not

always grand, with flashing lights and dramatic turns. Sometimes, they come gently, like a whisper. The perfect timing of a kind word or surprising provision when we least expect it—these are the miracles that God orchestrates in our everyday lives.

Our faith plays a crucial role in experiencing miracles. In Mark 9:23 (NIV), Jesus assures us, “All things are possible for one who believes.” It’s easy to become disheartened and let doubt creep in, but remember, faith is not the absence of doubt; it’s choosing to believe in God’s promises despite what we see. It’s reminding ourselves that we serve a mighty God capable of miracles. As we cultivate a heart full of faith, we open the door for God to work wonders in our lives, and receive a testimony to share with others. Our testimony could be the very encouragement someone else needs to ignite their faith. So, lean into your faith, share your miracle stories, and keep your eyes peeled for the extraordinary amid the ordinary. Walk in anticipation, trusting in the God of Miracles,

“Father, you are great and perform miracles. You alone are God. I can look back over my life and see all the wonderful things you have done for me. I can’t tell it all. I am grateful for everything you have done for me. Forgive me for doubt, fear, and unbelief. Drive them out of my life. Help me to be strong in you and the power of your might. May my faith grow, grow, grow. In Jesus’ name - Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Second Positive Case of Rabies ed in Cleveland County This Year

SHELBY, NC – On August 8, 2024, the Cleveland County Health Department was notified of a skunk that tested positive for rabies. This is the second rabid animal identified in the county this year. The animal was found on Casar Rd, Casar. Any person bitten or exposed to potentially infectious saliva from this animal should contact their healthcare provider or the local health department for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980484-5169 or 980-484-5100.

Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva.

Prevention of rabies is based on protection of susceptible animals and people and appropriate management of persons and animals

2. Control measures for pets exposed to rabies: If pets are exposed to rabies, they should receive a booster

dose of rabies vaccine if they are currently vaccinated at the time of exposure. If pets are not currently vaccinated against rabies when exposed, the animals will be euthanized or quarantined for six months in accordance with state law.

3. Control measures for persons exposed to rabies: Seek medical guidance from your healthcare provider or the local health department if you believe you have been exposed to rabies.

4. Limit stray and feral animals. In the cities of Shelby, Kings Mountain, Boiling Springs, and Grover all dogs must be kept on a leash. People should not approach stray or feral dogs or cats. Feral cat colonies should be intensively monitored, and their location reported to Cleveland County Animal Services.

5. Leave wildlife alone. Raccoons and other wildlife serve as the reservoir for rabies in North Carolina.

Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Anyone that sees an animal demonstrating unusual behavior should call the Cleveland County Animal Services at 704-481-9884.
