It was an enlightening experience for me to jury CraftForms 2021 at the Wayne Art Center, just outside of Philadelphia, where I grew up. I want to thank the Wayne Art Center for the opportunity to view and choose the fine craft for this exciting exhibition. The entries, submitted by artists living in forty-five states and nine countries, were excellent examples of the contemporary craft renaissance. The materials used by these gifted artists included the five traditional craft materials of clay, glass, metal wood and fiber as well as new media. The task of choosing ninety pieces from this wealth of styles and artistic expressions was daunting. As I always do when jurying, I first reviewed the entire group of submissions. I was struck by the inventiveness and mastery of technique these excellent applications exhibited. Reading the artists statements is always an important part of my decision making and the artists who submitted applications were eloquent in their explanations of technique and poignant descriptions of their inspirations. I was especially struck by the influence of COVID on the artists, many of whom created works in response to the pandemic, placing it firmly in this moment of our craft history.

CraftForms, firmly rooted in the present, represents Philadelphia’s long history with the handmade. This would include the strong contemporary craft presence begun by Helen Drutt in the 1960s and made accessible to the public by the Works Gallery and later, the Snyderman Gallery. This creative field has been brought into the 21st Century by such prestigious organizations as the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, the Clay Studio, the Center for Art in Wood, the Fabric Workshop, the Wayne Art Center and CraftNow. Philadelphia universities, including Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Swarthmore College and the University of the Arts, have contributed to the robust craft presence in this great city. Sadly, the University of the Arts, with its famous crafts department and stellar group of professors, has made the tragic mistake of eliminating their crafts program, which is famous for having launched many careers in the arts.

I’m proud to be a native Philadelphian and honored to have been chosen to jury this year’s CraftForms exhibition at the Wayne Art Center. I hope visitors to the exhibition will enjoy the thought-provoking array of talent on display. Carol Sauvion is the creator and director of Craft in America, the PBS documentary series celebrating American craft and craft artists. Sauvion is also the executive director of the non-profit organization Craft in America, which promotes original, handcrafted work through educational programming, through the book, Craft in America: Celebrating Two Centuries of Artists and Objects and through The Craft in America Center, a small museum, library and programmic space in Los Angeles where visitors engage directly with art and makers.

Woven into the very fabric of our story at Wayne Art Center, CraftForms 2021 is truly a celebration of spirit. As we have all experienced the past 20 months as a time of limited activity and restricted exposure to a broader world, we are heartened to see how busy craft artists have been in that atmosphere of reduction. Apparent from the vast number of exquisite entries we received, reduced activities, restricted travel and limited socialization have sent artists and craft makers deep into their places of work, concentrating their creative impulses to explore and create. From that well of time and effort we can now share a magnificent show of works in all craft media, bearing witness to the intensity of life during a pandemic and the beauty that can result. CraftForms 2021 is a collection of interpretations from around the US and four countries by craft makers who have been moved by something in their world and inspired to distill it into a work of art. The exhibition includes an exhilarating mix of 88 functional and decorative objects, all one-of-a-kind, from artists working in the full gamut of materials and methods of construction. Guests will see work that exemplifies a keen understanding of material and an extraordinary ability to shape it. The works evoke reactions of surprise and delight, stretching the imagination in ways that are masterful and fanciful. With the guidance of a growing list of esteemed jurors, CraftForms has received much attention from the broader craft culture, both in the US and abroad. We are honored to engage the experience and wisdom of Carol Sauvion as the juror for CraftForms 2021. Ms. Sauvion is founder of Craft in America, a groundbreaking nonprofit organization to promote and advance original handcrafted work, and Executive Director of Craft in America, a Peabody award-winning PBS documentary series. She sits on the Board of Trustees for the American Craft Council and for more than 40 years has been director of Freehand, her Los Angeles gallery specializing in functional craft. Heartfelt thanks go out to all those who have helped shape CraftForms 2021. It is through the faithful guidance of the Board of Directors, generous gifts from sponsors and patrons, and the enthusiasm and dedication of the CraftForms Committee that we are able to present this extraordinary exhibition.
